my favorite ship for ibuki is probably ibuki x hiyoko or ibuki x chiaki but recently ive been much more partial to the former so ill write about that one

i started shipping these two mostly as a joke at first because i was like “murder girlfriends” because the two of them as ultimate despair did world tours of destruction

and then i started thinking about their characters more and i realized like NO WAIT THIS IS ACTUALLY FIRE

ibuki is the ultimate musician but she doesnt perform music in the “correct marketable way” shes a rockstar she wants to sing metal not pop ballads and so she breaks away from her band in favor of going on her own path

hiyoko is the ultimate TRADITIONAL dancer her art form is about beauty and grace and not straying from the path and with her grandmother breathing down her neck its not like she has any other options

ibuki looks straight out of an avril lavigne music video but shes bubbly whereas hiyoko would much rather pull on your pigtails and call you names. though they both definitely lack a filter

another thing is that hiyoko LOVES ibukis music, shes the only person on the island who doesnt think its hot garbage (even though i hc sonia totally loved it because sonias such a sweetheart she needs more love OKAY)

i think hiyokos reaction is indicative of how she in many ways admires ibukis freedom for being capable of forging her own DESTINY

post sdr2 is also interesting to examine because as i previously mentioned… murder girlfriends

i think its compelling to think about how you could spend 2 years with someone, seeing each other at your very VERY worst but now you live together so you have to deal with it

at first i think hiyoko would avoid ibuki not wanting to confront her own crimes or the very real feelings that wouldnt just dissipate because as much as the ultimate despairs were terrible they were also vulnerable people who were manipulated into thinking despair was something very real and meaningful (brainwashing video is voided as always get used to it)

but ibuki is persistent and doesnt take things personally and she is healing but so is hiyoko so they might as well do it together instead of making every interaction painfully stilted

and ibuki still a lovable idiot and hiyoko still doesnt fully understand if you dont have something nice to say dont say it

but theyre making baby steps and thats got to count for something

and ibuki serenades hiyoko in her own totally metal way >;3

watched spiderman no way home. review below, tldr: if you enjoy spiderman stuff you will almost certainly love it, and it left me bizarrely looking forward to the chance of further tom holland spidey stuff.

okay so if youve seen the trailers, you know like, 80% of what to expect. its multiverse crossover bullshit in the name of fanservice bullshit, and that is all its trying to be through most of the runtime (which is a touch long but it didnt drag at all for me so). we get a lot of fun cute references, some meta ones (macguire calling garfield 'amazing' repeatedly), a lot of what you expect. the daredevil cameo was actually fun and cute and made me laugh out loud, which was a promising start given how soon it is into the movie.

i was genuinely surprised by how good two particular aspects of it were, the ending which i will get to in a bit, and the performances. everyone gave a solid performance. i expected this from molina and dafoe, but frankly i have never previously thought macguire or garfield were particularly good actors. everyone brought their a game in a way that frankly doesnt happen in the mcu. there are better written mcu flicks but there are not better performed ones.

spoilers from here on if you care about that kinda thing. a big part of why i ended up liking this movie so much was that it ended up fixing tom holland spiderman. holland spidey has never to my recollection mentioned an uncle ben, although we simply never got his origin story (wise move given the glut of spidey origins tbh). he never had that defining moment that frankly, he needed. he was portrayed well but it at times felt unearned, he was missing a key ingredient. he also had something that a spiderman should never have which was wealth. spidey is a poor kid from queens. he is a working class hero. he is friendly and neighborhood. he should not have tony stark bankrolling him, outfitting him with high tech armor, giving him defacto WMDs for the hell of it at 16. ive always liked holland as spiderman but his spiderman is fundamentally disconnected from the platonic ideal of a peter parker, until this movie. the shadow of rjd has loomed large over him and im delighted that that has been put to bed.

i honestly didnt expect the movie to kill aunt may. i thought theyd pull that punch, but im glad they didnt, it worked incredibly well. i think giving holland spidey that moment of trying to kill osborn in revenge only to be stopped my macguire, effectively an older version of himself, was good. i have enjoyed mcu spidey despite myself but this did feel like the first time he has actually grown as a character.

the ending, where peter is explicitly isolated, alone, has next to nothing, not even a high school diploma, and starts from zero doing his thing, sewing a costume himself, hit me hard. its rare for superheroes to actually be self sacrificing, certainly not in this way. sure theres plenty of deaths, but those are a mere hindrance to a comic book character. this uprooted his entire life in a way that he cant just get back, and it put him right where a peter parker belongs in the first place- broke, struggling, and doing his thing regardless.

only thing in the movie that annoyed me was no proper nod to spiderverse. unless you count electro telling garfield spidey 'i thought you would be black.' some people will be bothered by some plot holes and a lot of 'well its magic so' but that doesnt really bug me since like. none of it is dumber or less contrived than 'radioactive spider bite gives you powers' like if it works in the service of a good story and imo it does why care.

9/10, not a groundbreaking movie but one of the more worthwhile mcu efforts. even if you hate mcu spiderman, if you like the character in general, i would strongly recommend.

judges praised them for their wardrobe choice and how it fit their routine/concept of being 'born this way'. lachica previously worked w cl for her song spicy and they contacted the costume director to make their clothes (i think it's the same outfit they wore for cl's performances? but in different colors). boa gave them 93, taeyong - 97 and sm director - 96.

i'm actually surprised at how high the judges' scores are? maybe because i'm tired lol but i wasn't in love w the three choreos shown in the episode. similar to when lachica did beyonce's run the world, their routine for born this way was v on-brand, expected, and done before. they did execute their concept but like, idk. it wasn't that exciting. also, im not a fan of those outfits ><. for hook, it was fun. definitely pulled off their goal of wanting to do something that made the audience smile. and for coca n butter, idk i agree w boa's comment re how their dance wasnt harmonious. i also think the song is an interesting choice for an adam and eve concept..... it didnt seem fitting? like, the song is something that coca n butter would choose but it doesnt really connect with the concept they chose.

we'll have to wait until the next ep to see what the judges say about the other 3 crews but again, i really liked prowdmon's routine. if im assuming correct, they took this mission and did a gender-swap (?), having the females dress more masculine while performing alongside a drag queen. because the 'song' choice is entirely in english, i wonder if itll translate w the korean audience? but what surprised me was how they were still able to choreograph to a spoken poem and do it well.

and not much to say w holybang and ygx. i feel like their routines were also v on-brand. and yes, the mission was literally to invite ur male dance connections and do a co-ed performance. it was very.... lackluster. esp for a semi-final mission? for me, im always excited to see prowdmon because of their creative spin and effort to show something more.

the standout as always are jo kwon's stilettos. i agree that the concept itself isn't that interesting because like with run the world......it's a decade old at this point. well, it is to us in the western world, so i will give them the credit that jo kwon dancing in heels with a bunch of waackers to a well recognized gay anthem on a hugely popular show in a more socially conservative country is maybe more of a big deal than we think? however, i still think they could have pushed it farther, at least in terms of artistic abstraction with the costumes. think something like lia kim's lone show or even as far as the triadic ballet:

me, internally: don't start talking about the bauhaus and the ballets russes you're the only person that cares about early 20th century avant garde dance don't start talking about the bauhaus and the ballets russes don't start talking about the bauhau------

the pants were a good idea for the girls, but giving the waackers the gloves was a mistake because the movement of the gloves themselves actually obscures the movement of the arms, which is......the point of waacking. this is just another example of how there isn't a good costume designer with experience in movement working on this show, because i understand the impetus for this idea (plus they had the gloves already since that was the backup dancer costume for spicy), but it interferes with the type of movement in a very fundamental way. and nothing was helped by the projection background being mostly black, which maybe was a callback to the original mv?? but if it was the only reason why you could see what was happening is because everyone was like, mostly naked, so.

hook

i actually really like this routine, i think it's the best one that hook has done so far. it's fun and funny and cute and has a short little narrative that i think ties everything together really well. and i like that they brought in a popping crew to showcase a different style. also the projections are SO good, it took me a solid five seconds to figure out that it was not actually raining in the studio. i don't love the bicycle move, but otherwise this choreo flows a lot better and has a stronger structure than their others, which makes me wonder if that's the addition of having a collaborator.

coca n butter

what is the grip that 16 shots has on the dance scene, this is like the third thing i've seen that uses it. i do agree with the judges here also, if you hadn't said this was supposed to be based on adam and eve i would not have guessed. i don't think there's enough relevant storytelling information in the choreography to justify even saying that it has a narrative element at all, personally. also eden is a bit of a tough one because like........what are you gonna do that taemin and gain haven't done? you really wanna try to step to taemin????? i do think that by saying that it was eden themed they actually made the work make less sense, because the first time i watched it and had no idea i enjoyed it more than after i found out. there is a very interesting emphasis on the body and physicality in this that is very rooted in touch and relationship; to others in the space and to the space itself. there's a lot of floor and hand work, as well as partner/group formations that require physical support, so i understand where that judges' comment is coming from. i think they should have just stuck with having it be about physicality and ran with that more than trying to lay a narrative overtop that. it was nice to see something different from them though, even though i couldn't see them 90% of the time because they were wearing black bodysuits against a black backdrop. tldr you're right the music does not match the theme and that's why it's not harmonious.

i see your second ask and i'm going to elabourate more there, but i will say that choreographing contemporary to spoken word fairly common? or maybe it's just common in the circles i run in, which include a fair amount of spoken word poets and contemporary dancers. i'm also not sure if this style will read to a contemporary korean audience, but also they absolutely took the challenge as a challenge and did something left field for the show, and i like that a lot. i think the choreo is good (typical of prowdmon) and i like the concept that they went with it of purposefully having a more masc styling for the dancers and having the main performer be a drag queen, but using womanifesto in particular? i think a wrong choice.

there's nothing really wrong with this routine, it's just a typical hip hop choreo. the girls absolutely bodied the guys though they were really giving us nothing. when compared to the rest of the routines though, because it doesn't have a clear focus point or theme there's nothing really here to draw your attention, especially because they purposefully make everyone look the same. normally i don't have that much of a gripe with having a dance crew all dressed the same, but if you're going to do that you really have to make sure that your choreo and synchronicity is top fucking notch, which.....this is not. i predict that this is probably going to get the lowest score and the judges are probably going to say something along similar lines to what i've said here.

i don't actually hate this performance but something about seeing basketball jerseys on a football field 'set' is absolutely rage inducing. and i don't even like sports. if you're gonna pick a theme you gotta do proper research at least. like holybang's, this is a typical hip hop routine but unlike holybang's this has some good charm that i think would have served much better if they had gone maybe first or second, as opposed to last (i'm assuming you ordered this in performance order). i like that they used the steadicam, it showcased the charisma of the routine better than if they had just left it at the wide crane shot. do i think it's a good semifinal routine? no, but i still think it's a pretty good routine overall. it's probably going to get a middling score (which is fair) and i don't really know what the judges are going to say about it. probably something like ygx hasn't branched out from their style very much, me thinks.

i'd say i'm also surprised at how high the scores are (i'm assuming out of 100), but also i don't know what the actual numerical scores of any of the other rounds have been so i don't have a comparison. these scores are high for routines that are i don't think are that close to perfect, but that's my personal opinion and i'm very judgemental. curious as to what the judges have to say though!

so i've been using neopronouns for less than a week and every day since i started, i've been getting negative reactions. the negativity comes from strangers, so it doesn't hurt me as personally as if friends were doing this (i actually haven't said anything to my friends about my neopronouns yet). anyhow, when people try to argue with me, i tell them that i don't see why they can't be respectful and call someone whatever makes them feel happy and comfortable. one reaction i got was "just because something makes someone happy doesn't make it valid" and compared it to letting someone drink poison if drinking poison is what makes them happy. then i get a lot of people who bring up stuff like "but what if the pronouns that make me feel valid contain a slur? / what if i use pizzaself? / what if i only go by BLMself pronouns? you'd be invalidating me!!!" and they try to use my own words against me since i've previously said "even if you don't understand it you should call people by what makes them feel valid." i know these people don't even use neopronouns to begin with but tbh it still does start to make me feel guilty? i'm nd and i can't always pick up social cues or sarcasm so i would feel horrible if i did unwillingly invalidate someone. but i'm also kind of paranoid because so much trolling has been going around recently like one video where someone tricked another person into using neopronouns that sounded like a slur when said out loud, recorded it, and put it online. i don't always know who is being sincere and who wants to trick people, particularly with nounself pronouns, like the pizzaself thing. finally, i wanted to go back to the topic of not telling my friends about my neopronouns yet. i feel like if i just start to put my neopronouns on profiles that my friends can view, it'll seem odd to them that i never said anything before, but i also don't know how to bring up in a personal conversation "i found out about some neopronouns i like and i've started using them" without it being awkward. i don't think my friends would make fun of me but i do think they'd find neopronouns 'weird' in general and maybe act kind of insensitive without meaning to, like not getting it. how would you react to the rude ppl? i know i could ignore them but i feel like they take that as them 'winning' or me running out of ways to defend my point of view. and how would you have your friends find out about about you wanting to use neopronouns?

idk if i’ve said this on dash yet, but i’m treating new famed more or less like an au. in sung’s au, the defining change is that he was let go from gold star when he had his injury as a trainee. it was always my headcanon that they truly were close to cutting him loose anyway, so this is just the other side of that. he had his injury, got plastic surgery to try to appease them into keeping him, and they still let him go. when he went home his parents said alright u tried that now join the fam business n sung freaked bc he realized he doesnt want that for himself so he went to do smth he also hated, and joined the military. while there he still worked on his dance and vocals whenever he had a moment to do so, so that when he was discharged and started auditioning again, he wasn’t so rusty

he is a year younger in this world, just bc of quantum’s age range, not for any other reason. makes him a little less of a cradle robber in his relationship lol which, another change is that daisuke wouldn’t have been his first kiss, just first everything else

quantum is very different from old element and new element, but it’s very in line with what i liked about quicksilver (& has models from that) and he’s a leader! this is an idea ive toyed with a lot over the last three years tbh. at first i didn’t think sung suited a leader position, but he came to show me he’s just a different kind of leader. i liken him to jinki often in this regard. rather than lassoing members in, he supports them being however they are, and takes an intimate/emotional path to gaining their trust and leading them. and while he wasn’t suited for the full business life, what he learned from his father’s teachings helps him in dealing with the company as the group’s representative there (& he loves a good powerpoint presentation)

other timeline stuff for big events in his life are likely to shift but i’m not sure on specifics yet

2. what does your muse think of their company and their group?

wc: 260

as the child of a businessman, he’s never under the illusion that as a company entity, their first priority is their wellbeing. he knows that they are products, and that they’re treated as such. it’s a bit heavier with dimensions than gold star, since gold star makes a more active effort to pretend they care. however, once having accepted that, sung thinks himself and dimensions work well together. he does feel that for a company, they allow himself and his members to be a part of the creative process, as says their motto. he feels much more encouraged to write songs and choreograph under dimensions than he did under gold star, where it felt like he was constantly on his knees begging for the company to take him seriously

as for quantum, sung really loves what they’re about. he’s not a big fan of all (or most) of their songs, though he’s more loving towards a song written by another member even if it’s the same sound he dislikes, but he absolutely loves being focused on performance and concepts. his creative mind works very much on the basis of story and emotion that comes with it, and he feels like quantum’s concepts sometimes to often lean into his tastes. he’s always been a dancer first and foremost (god am i so glad to have his main dancer title back i MISSED u) so focusing on performance is v much up his alley, and his preferred style of dance is through storytelling. he feels the heart of dance is in that

3. is your muse on their first contract or their second? if they’ve renewed, what were their feelings around that at the time and what were their hopes for their second contract? if they haven’t renewed, what are their current thoughts on the end of their eventual first contract?

quantum’s on their first contract still, up for renewal in 2024. at the current moment, he would like to re-sign. however, unlike my others, his re-signing depends more heavily on the other members. if they were unhappy and wanted to leave, sung would want to follow suit, not because he can’t make his own decisions, but because if the reason the members want to leave is because of the company, not quantum, he’d want to try to help quantum continue to live. if that means all of the members leaving in order to rebrand under another company, so be it. he’d like to avoid lineup changes however he can, and ideally would like to be an idol for as long as possible

he himself feels alright about his treatment. he feels creatively stimulated, and appreciated for talents further than his face. if he were to try to negotiate different terms at their contract renewal, part of it would likely be wanting to give members a higher share of profits, especially on releases they’re creatively involved in. sung personally has no use for excessive money, but not all of his members have his background, and he feels more than just the money, it’s what’s fair. he’d also prefer to allow for more creative freedom. as a 7/8 year group by then, he’d think they should be allowed to take the reigns more heavily. and on his personal side of things, he would want dimensions to be more mindful of his schedule. sung enjoys working, but he’s only one person, who doesn’t want to be overworked. these are all just his current thoughts, though, and will probably change before contract renewal comes up

4. what are your muse’s goals and motivations?

his motivations to be ‘successful’ and/or achieve his goals are his family, namely being someone his nephew and niece can be proud of, and someone his parents can feel was worth letting go of. he feels closer to the latter than he did in old famed. his members motivate him to be a good leader, his desire to grow as a creator motivates him to write and choreograph

specific goals could be bigger like his desire for more public recognition. while quantum has a lot more recognition both in korea and abroad than element or quicksilver, sung wants the best for his group. he’d be happy if they stayed where they are with their loyal fandom, but he still aims for more

sung also wants to get better at standing up for himself. he’s best at standing up for others, because he can slap on a bit of bravado in order to help them out, but when it comes to himself, especially with his parents, he’s pretty awful at it

he’d also like to create more for quantum, and others. i/he have a goal for him to write a whole album for someone, so if anyone reads this far and could want sung writing for their muse, hit me up!

he’d like to get married and have children one day. that’s always been a dream of his, and while he knows his career doesn’t allow for that soon, it’s still on his docket

he wants to spend more time with his family, especially his nephew and niece. they’re so new to the world and learning everything, and sung wants to be a part of that. he doesnt want his part in their early lives to be ‘i don’t really remember seeing him back then’

5. what is one conflict, internal or external, that your muse is currently dealing with, has recently dealt with, or will need to deal with in the future?

at some point, this bitch is gonna have to admit he’s a homiesexual. in his previous version, it was a lot easier for him to ‘i pretend i do not see it’ when it came to that. sung’s very ignorant when it comes to the queer community in korea, so he’s not even really aware of terms beyond gay, maybe trans. but, terms aside, he always thought he was someone who liked women, and daisuke and a couple of others were just outliers. they were the Special ones outside of his jurisdiction that were just too good for him to not notice. aka he believed he was bi. and now, he still does, but i have less faith he’ll be able to hold that up until he dies like i did before, because he’s actually dated at least one woman before in this world. considering the plot has yet to be picked up, i don’t know the specifics, but i do think it’s harder to run away from when the way he treated a relationship with a woman and a relationship with a man were lightyears away from one another. it’s still possible for him to run away from the truth of the situation, but it’s also very possible that one day, his thoughts on it will shake, and everything will click into place (messily,, probably the messiest clicking ever) it would be a difficult thing for him to come to terms with, though i think it’s better for him in the longterm to truly know who he is, and why he acts the way he does, why he feels the way he does about women vs men. it’s also nice just to not live a lie, even if only privately

6. if your muse has established career claims, what are their thoughts on their career so far? if they do not, how do they feel about not having individual activities yet? what would they like to do in the future, if anything? if they don’t have ambitions for individual activities, explain why.

sung has a pretty filled history of individual activities. most are points claims with a focus on modelling, his radio, and music, though he’s dipped into pretty much ever facet of idoldom, some with more success than others. his ecp expenditures flesh that out a little more, and add a bit more realism, and/or make sense of the group changes. he had a one year modelling contract with the north face, and while official claims aren’t possible, i was inspired by a couple of things rowoon did with them. there was more of a push on an eco-friendly side of things, and there was a bit of dancing. playing into his group position with dancing i feel is fitting, but the eco friendly part i also feel could round out his image more as a good, kind boy who also can be sexy, whereas before, his earlier modelling claims focused a lot more on the sexy aspect, because it fit element and his trajectory there better. here, it makes him more dual sided from the beginning. north face is also just a nice, strong brand that i think is fitting for a pretty boi. i set it a bit after a year out from debut because i feel like that’s the most realistic, especially for a group like quantum that grew audience with each comeback

part of that first year being focusing only on the group ties into his creative claims as well! his first creative claim was with the bside love, lalala on the eternity ep. the nicest part of creative claims being unattached to positions is that all of sung’s claims are the songs in the discography most Him. so love lalala is very jazzy and smooth, and would have served as his first introduction to songwriting, as well as what made him interested in songwriting. then he was a choreographer on error, which is heavily story based, and about the members being a unit, and making beautiful pictures together. i hope to snag intro long journey and outro long journey from the beginning and end of the ateez sector, because they’re beautiful compositions that fit sung’s style, but also having him on both makes him feel like he’s a part of the concept’s creation in an intimate way, which fits with dms. then there’s aurora, which sung partially composed and partially choreographed. the choreography has contemporary flair to it, and the song is a flowing sound that matches that. then there’s partial production on sunrise, which i just love the robotic ass experimental production there, and comp for with u, which i believe ties back into sung’s rediscovering his love of piano. choreo for valkyrie is most similar to error in it’s pretty pictures way, and also has a bit of complex footwork, especially as its point dance, which is also p sung to want to include. and finally, some comp on stand by, which is like a mix of the appeal of aurora and with u methinks? listening to all of his written songs together i feel like really makes a picture of sung’s songwriting so i love that

-i called it. I knew if they opened with Mr Said Out Bitch it was gonna be bc he was dead-- had to be, bc Lucifer was in Hell. Didnt like being right. Thanks for heaping a bunch of character development on a great bit of comic relief just so he can be dead.

-not enough Trixie. What the fuck. Is this a Chandler Riggs situation? Can Scarlett not act or something? Give her stuff to do please.

-EIGHT EPISODES AND NO SINGING LUCIFER???? GODDAMN BLASPHEMY

-i get why people are frustrated with how Maze is written bc it seems like she never does anything but go back and forth but I mean... that's just the writing across the board for this series. Lucifer, Chloe, and Dan have all flipflopped as the seasons progress-- character growth is handled the way real people are, with relapses in bad behavior and having to reiterate lessons more than once. Unusual for television writing, which usually addresses an idea once and then fucks off it forever.

-That said, I enjoyed Maze's arc of dealing with abandonment and seeking a soul. It made sense and was in character-- Lesley played Maze like she felt utterly lost, near madness from frustration, seeking comfort the way she best knows (sex and violence) from the people she loves and not knowing what to do when it wasn't working. I hate that she's so easily manipulated but I feel like it really is bc she wants to feel normal so badly and doesnt realise that normal is relative.

-tangentially, Lilith did not play as big a part as I expected and i was sort of disappointed.

-I wonder if the ring will now be used to pass lilith's immortality to someone who needs it?

-Tom Ellis' performance as Michael was v good as I previously said, but the entire concept of him was nothing inspired. I really had high hopes for him bc I love twins and especially twins who are like the bane of each other's existence but ffs they didn't do anything with it! So he's the polar opposite of his brother, so what! He's a wicked little American hunchback who lies and schemes and plays on people's fears... why? To what end? His plan kept changing and his entire motivation seems to be "bc I'm a dick." Boring. And he dresses like a twat.

-Lucifer was not stuck in Hell for remotely a long enough time. I am an angstwhore and I wanted pining. The same fucking thing happened when they made Dean a demon on SPN-- oh no we've had a decent idea and gotten our hero up the tree, now let's do absolutely nothing with it and get him back down aqap! Fuck off. They gave us this difficult, interesting situation to work with (how can Lucifer have a relationship if he has to run Hell) and then the moment he came up for the tiniest amount of time, Hell apparently no longer needs a warden! Srsly? When only two months ago, all hell was breaking loose???? Fuck your fucking convenient handwave.

-also I am sad they dropped the hinted mental/emotional toll on Lucifer for having to return to Hell Granted the article is a year old, likely discussing ideas that were in the infancy, but I was looking forward to seeing the "alcoholic running a liquor store." Obviously once they decided they were doing Michael-playing-Lucifer and summarily realised nobody would believe Lucifer changed that much, it was easier to just come straight out and say "yea thats not him, thats the evil twin."

-Amenadiel is lovely as ever. Charming, funny, the perfect mix of earnest and awkward. DB Woodside nails him and I love him. I love his friendships with Dan and Maze, the big brother instinct he gets with Luci and Chloe. He's a big black dude whose primary role is caretaker and I am here for it.

-Nice to see happy funny Dan back after taking a bereavement sabbatical in s4. I like Kevin Alejandro's performance a lot and so I dont like when Dan's being a dickhead bc it makes me wanna smack him. Loved him reading Diablo scenes w Luci-- reminded me of s2 when they were dorking out about the Weaponizer movies. And the cemetery scene, wow. Dan realising Heaven and Hell are real and that he is in danger of damnation and how bad that scares him-- ow my heart. That having been said...

-I didnt really like characters having these massive bombshells dropped on them just bc Michael is a douche-- that's so lazy. It felt like the writers ticking off checkboxes. Okay so he tells Chloe she's a miracle. That's fine I guess-- there are stakes there. We know it's going to rock her world bc we know how much it damaged Lucifer when he found out. But then he orchestrates Dan finding out and apart from the shock factor... who cares? It matters after, but not before. There was no set-up for that punchline. We knew when Linda pushed Lucifer to "drop the metaphor" that it was going to be a biblical shock for her. We knew what a relief it was going to be for Charlotte, who thought she was losing her mind, to learn that Hell was real and she could change her fate. We knew it was a gamechanger when Chloe found out. And that's why Dan gets the fuck over it super fast, bc it doesn't matter. It was just a box to be checked. Boo.

-it was nice getting to see Tricia Helfer bc I adore that woman but i really do hope that we get to see Charlotte properly again. Take me to the silver city already i am sick of not knowing what it looks like.

-i love Linda to bits. She's funny, she's heartwarming, she's the owner of the single braincell and she and Ella occasionally share it while they watch the others try to bite their own elbows.

01. kaun komsott - ros sereysothea

this song actually lyrically has absolutely nothing to do with ziggy !!!!  kaun komsott /  កូនកំសត់ actually just means “poor/pitiful child” it’s just a khmer dub of a song from a taiwanese movie lol but i feel like this is the kind of music he would listen to that made him fall in love with, like ... humanity, as dumb as that sounds. it’s time period appropriate (late 60s/early to mid 70s), the song is really good and it’s SO emotional.  i could see him sitting in the apartment of his bandmates after being “found” and they teach him how to use the record player and he sits there going through each and every record they have and listening to this and its like the fucking scene in ratatootie where the goddamn rat can visualize tastes as colors but he would be so enamored with the song he would see it in colors or something i dunno.  something has definitely fucking happened to my brain because ever since nat and alex and i rewatched ratatootie we keep referencing it for our characters. anyways i ended up using an instrumental of kaun komsott in the final film i made as the song that plays during the end.  so this song just also means a lot to me because it’s part of how i made this character and the film/story i animated to go along with him, i am sure you are all absolutely sick of hearing me talk about it <3

one of z’s most obvious character motifs is figuring out self identity through adopting different guises.  he markets himself as being so overly confident and almost arrogantly certain of himself -- rock god space idol whatever -- as his own way of learning who he thinks he might be underneath it all.  i think at first it started off a little innocuous, a ‘ fake it till u make it ’ thing at the least and maybe more obviously a ‘ im not a human so i have to pretend to be someone else ’ deal, but over time it became almost all consuming and just obliterated all his previously held sense of self in favor of some weirdly demented version of who he wanted to be.  683 starts off with the same core personality traits as ziggy: maybe he’s a little vain, a little selfish, but he’s very interested in creativity/self-expression and he wants to be thought of as a unique individual and appreciated for his differences.  but the difference is that 683 isnt an arrogant asshole who has no regard for other people in the slightest.  so yeah ... who can u be now ... is it worth it to adopt a different guise or should he go through the effort of figuring out what parts of his personality were corroded by human influence and what parts are genuinely him?  my big endgame thoughts for his story would be that he eventually just decides to retire from the public eye and fucks off entirely.  this would be over the course of a long long long time -- maybe he has a good 20 yr run in the industry -- but there are some things about him he has to deal with (mental health issues, drug addiction, also the fact that you’re a freaky alien creature who doesnt age like a human so you’re physically like 46 and you still look like you’re 25?) so he inevitably decides he doesnt need the horrible pressure of fame and he ought to just live his life for himself.  i think this would be a nice final song for him to sing/perform -- then he goes into the dressing room and cuts his hair and just vanishes. bye.

1. i think this would sound A LITTLE like the kind of music he would write/play albeit i feel like his would be more exciting and have more samplings of like laser noises or pewpewpew or weird spaceship sounds BUT.  its also pretty time period appropriate.  even in “modern” verses ziggy is inexplicably obsessed with the 1970s, he likes bell bottoms and thinks groovy patterns are neat and he owns too many lava lamps.  anywayz. 2. just the general idea of feeling unfulfilled with luxury -- even if ziggy enjoys his fame and wealth and the absolutely insane amount of pussy/dick he gets at some level he is still cognizantly aware of how weirdly empty he feels.  he ditched atomina and came here because he felt unfulfilled and bored and unwanted.  now he feels wanted (clearly, everyone loves him) and he feels entertained (earth is So Good at fun distractions) but his fulfillment still isnt quite there.  he’s getting there -- but in exchange of being able to live this life of fame, he’s had to kind of change everything about himself and live this almost caricature version of himself, and he knows he cant keep it up forever.  the luxury will run out one day and he’ll be a washup and no one cares about celebrities once they stop being hip.  it is literally only a matter of time before ziggy has to find out who he is because no one can be a “rockstar” forever.

Joshua always had an answer to nearly every question, but this question, he could never answer without having doubt behind his words. He liked being around y/n, he liked how his family got along with her.

Josh always associated y/n with his childhood because they’ve known each other since they were little. Y/n reminds him of being young and little. But Josh wasnt little anymore. He was 19 years old. It wasn’t long before he and y/n started liking people and everything was okay for a while. Everything was fine. But, whenever he’s around her, he can’t help but feel his whole body go numb. He liked her so much it made his body feel numb.

And it had spilled out while debating with himself one day. He liked y/n. Whenever he wasnt around her, he had this urge to be with her. He wasnt himself when she wasn’t around. He denied every claim about her, but each time he was confronted, it felt harder and harder to say no. His mind would wonder about her. Did he like her? No, we're just friends. Were they really just friends? Yes, to her at least.

He knew y/n was oblivious, but did she really not notice all of those times they'd flirt? Him constantly trying to be around her?

Thats all he could think about on New Year’s Eve, until his phone buzzed, pulling him away from his thoughts. He picked it up and saw it was a text from his sister telling him to go down there and enjoy the party, not just sit up in his room. But he didnt want to. They had invited family and friends. He was down there for a while and nearly everyone was here, except the short girl he had spent a long time getting ready for.

He thought about texting her but decided against it. If she comes, she comes. If she doesn’t, then she doesnt, he told himself. He turned his head towards the door when he heard a knock on it.

"Can I come in," he heard the voice he had been waiting to hear all night. A smile spread across his lips as he quickly  walked over to open the door for her.

"Hey Josh," she said smiling while leaning up to hug him.

He smiled and wrapped his arms around her shoulders, "Happy new years eve, y/n."

If it was up to him, he would’ve held on forever but she pulled away.

“I’m sorry I’m late, my parents were being dicks again. As usual, their fights just had to revolve around me, so it was sort of hard to leave.”

"Don’t even worry about, I didn’t even realize what time it was. Come, sit," he blurted out before sitting on his bed and gesturing towards the spot next to him. She giggled as she watched his cheeks turn a light red, she walked over and sat next to him, closer than usual.

"So, what are you doing up here, why arent you down there?"

I was waiting for you.

"I didnt feel well so I came up for a bit."

She nodded and looked around the room for a moment before returning her gaze to him.

"Can you believe its the last day of 2019. Gosh, its weird to think that tomorrow will be a new year, a whole new decade," she told him while standing up and looking at his awards and trophies before turning back to him.

“Yeah, it’s crazy. It’s been a hell of a ride. It was a pretty good decade, though, not even gonna complain. Really good year too.”

"Exactly, so, because of that, we are not gonna spend the last day up here in your room, we are going to go and spend time with family and friends. Enjoy their company," she said while grabbing his hand and pulling him up, "Got it?"

He smiled down at her serious, demanding face, "Got it."

She laughed and pulled him out of the room, leading him downstairs.

Once they reached the last step she leaned over to his ear and whispered, "Go have fun."

She turned to walk away before turning towards him once more and whispering, "And meet me in the kitchen for the countdown."

With that she left to his sister, not looking back once. He stared at her as she walked away. His lips tugged into a smile, yeah, he loved her. This feeling is definitely not a “like.”

There was 7 minutes left of the day, the year, the decade. His mind shortly wandered off towards all the amazing things that have happened in that year. His show, his music, his career had just taken off. And y/n was by his side, through all of it.

He remembers the first time after the show premiered that he was spotted in public and he was with y/n. It was a group of about 4 girls and he thought they were absolutely beautiful, and he realized that he was going to be approached and sought after by more beautiful girls (and guys), hopefully. But even then, y/n stood out, she was still the most beautiful person he had ever laid his eyes on.

He looked down at his phone, 5 minutes.

He heard light clicks from heels and the smile that was previously on his face, returned. He turned his head as she ran in from around the corner into his arms.

"Hey! Everything okay," he asked.

She smiled, "Everything’s fine, I just wanted to hug you for the last time, until next year."

He stared at her, eyebrows raised. He playfully rolled his eyes and sighed, "You can laugh."

Thats all it took for her to begin laughing at her own joke that Josh still hadnt found funny. But he laughed anyways because he loved seeing her happy. He looked down at his watch, 4 minutes.

Now or never, right?

"Y/n. I have something to tell you," she stopped laughing and nodded. He took her hands and gently rubbed her skin with his thumb.

He took a deep breath, "I’ve spent this past decade with you by my side. And I can’t tell you how much that means to me. Y’know, its never a dull moment with you around, and you know that I’m not very good with words, that’s why I write so many songs. And most of them have been about you, they’ve always been about you because its always been you. You have no idea how long I’ve been feeling this way and I don’t want to pressure you because you mean the world to me. You mean more to me than I can even put into words. But I can’t pretend anymore, I can’t deny having feelings for you, when I do. I-I love you.”

Her eyes widened as his did. He had meant to say I like you, but the wrong word came out. His heartbeat sped up even more than it had previously. Why did he say it? Another question he couldnt answer. His fear slowly washed away as he noticed a small smile begin to form on her perfectly shaped lips.

“10, 9, 8…”

They both heard everyone in the living room begin the countdown, but still they did not move. He counted down in his head as he heard the others say the final seconds of the year.

“Happy new year!”

As if on cue, y/n cupped Josh’s face with her small hands and brought his lips to hers, his arms quickly wrapping around her waist. They heard the cheers but kept their lips locked. They pulled away slowly, but their foreheads stayed connected.

"Happy new year, y/n."

"I love you too.”

As if he already couldn’t stop smiling, he pulled her to his chest and kissed her forehead. Finally.

I gotta ask, how did come to the conclusion of going through the process of taking Hormones in order taking a more effeminate qualities. One could come to the conclusion that the years of hard drinking and really bad trips with experimenting with even harder Drugs did a number on the noggin, but that seem too easy of a explanation for you. Mind sharing how you got here and why you are certain you should be there?

One could come to that conclusion, but sadly the brand doesnt exactly line up perfectly with my real conduct.

i think my experimentation probably did a number in the regard of confronting darkness the way that it clears my head of the manners by which i dance around it, but the effeminate shit was always there and was something i consciously confronted without the need of hard drugs just prior. in retrospect i think, in confronting that, i tried to escape it with that experimentation rather than it arriving to it from my brain being fucked from psychedelics. However, even there, i still did it relatively sparingly. Probably no more than 10 times a year, maybe less. and only within a window of one or two years because ive since come to find i have no need, curiosity or use for them anymore.

The thing is that i am not certain i should be here or anywhere, but that it’s the closest approximation to what i feel is a more authentic lived experience. I had previously been wracked with neuroses and toxic behaviours that i now feel arose from my complexes around denying it, that otherwise have since evaporated from me. I can’t say if transness is a biological or socialization hiccup or from catching gay frogs as a kid or something, but it certainly is a cornerstone of my metaphysical condition or circumstance.

The second time I consciously confronted it, as an adult, was not 2 years ago when i started HRT but 5 years ago, back at the end of 2014. That was the first time I kind of took myself out of the hedgemaze and looked down upon the pattern i was navigating. And it was a pattern i rapidly came to have dread and terror over, which began a lengthy period of two years of doubt, escapism (the experimentation thing), and i guess bargaining. Of feeling it was a mask or another escape from my true core of mental illness and waiting it out until it too, passed as an aesthetic retard vacation. To one day like, look in the mirror and feel i look ridiculous and get over it for good. To my dismay, it only reinforced it’s validity.

I don’t know how to describe the feeling except for a sort of brain massage or like, the clearing of mental congestion. It’s like a gasp of air, it is clarity and a harmonization of the mind and body for me, whereas before, i felt like I was in the “Sunken Place” with joysticks controlling my body as an avatar. I frequently suffered from this phenomenon of laying in bed at night, terrified, thinking the room i was laying in and my body itself was rapidly expanding, as infinitely enormous. That the space between my eyes and the walls or even the rest of my body were as far away as the other side of the country. Needless to say, i don’t feel that anymore.

It’s actually somewhat unsettling to me how much this really seems to be my reality because it seems so fucking goofy. To have spent years clowning on and thinking of Those Transgenders, but.. and yet here I am just doing that with complete ease and being present in the moment and not analyzing and second guessing everything i would do when I was performing as a guy.

My dad is abusing me part 4

I can’t hardly believe what’s happened in recent events. My dad phoned me, so naturally I pretended to not be here and did not asnwer. He then sent me a txt message asking me to come over so I could sort out my suit. A suit for what? He’d decided I was going to his wedding as an usher. Didn’t even ask first. And he knows I have speaking problems so, an usher? Is he senile already??

Anyway I told him no, I told my sister too who was nosey enough to ask. I told me sis I couldnt go because I am an alcoholic. I’m not, but it felt like a good reason. I couldnt do that with my dad, giving him something to lecture me about? No thanks. So I just said I’d considered it and it wouldn’t work out.

Then my youngest bro who lives with my dad begins chatting with me. We talk and he’s doing well. The wedding comes up and we talk about it. I eventually bring up some issues I have, like how my partner is never invited, which kinda seems like there’s some prejudice going on. Apparantly my dad is just dum and thought my partner was just “a friend”. It doesn’t help that it’s not easy to explain my relationship with them. But we’re family without a doubt, and I love the heck out of them. But that’s enough about that, this post is meant to be about bad people, so back to my dad...

He started to seem less bad, and more stupid as things went along. Eventually the main topic came up. My dad owes me £3000. He’s got spending problems, so even though he has a very good job, he never has any money. I am the opposite of him in so many ways. I’d get money in a card from my grandparents to spend on what I want for my birthday and such. I never spent that money. I saved it. I was a very boring child. I then got a job at an Amazon warehouse. And yes it’s as bad as the rumors say. But not the first week. That first week they make it so easy that it’s actually fun. Then they make it harder and harder until it’s not doable anymore... Yeah you can just look up other people’s stories on that. It was hell. And deserves it’s own post. My dad is only relevant to the day I got fired.

That story, to keep it short went like this: I called in sick, because, I was sick. At about noon I got up out of bed to have something to eat and drink, and felt a bit better. My dad sees me and forces me into the car and drives me to my workplace. I don’t have a choice. I get in and walk right into my boss. I have never forgotten the look he gave me. “So you think you can just come and go when you want do you?” he asked me. What kind of person calls in sick and then shows up late instead? It looked to him like I just didn’t want to go in so early. It was because of that moment that my scanner never got upgraded like everyone elses did. I was told not to worry about the extra training session. I didn’t realise how clear it was at the time that this was the moment they decided to fire me. They gave me only a week after that day i think to keep working, all the while talking bad about my performance and how I needed to improve or else.

Sorry for that detour, but my dad got me fired from that job. And he’s never once helped me get a job before or since. But I had earned myself a nice amount of cash over these years. I earned a nice sum. My dad had many moments where he struggled. But I knew he was a bad spending since he bankrupt us back when he was living with my mum. It was cars that did it.

I don’t think he ever asked me for money. Instead it was just an “I’m sorry”. Naturally I said “I can lend you some money”. I don’t know if i fell for the bait, or if he really didn’t expect this. But I lent him money, and he promised he would pay me back. He was very grateful and aksed that I not tell anyone about this, since he’d feel so ashamed to have to borrow from his son. So, I kept it secret.

As time went on more things happened. His car had troubles and needed to be fixed, so I lent more. He couldnt pay the phone bill, so I lent more. He needed eggs for dinner, so I went out and paid for them. With the food I was always the one he sent to go buy it, and I’d often pay for it too, but he was meant to pay me back whatever it ended up being afterwords. I wrote this amount down, and I didn’t mind if a few were forgotten or he didn’t have the money at the time. I just kept the recipt for next time. These began to build up really badly. And before I knew it, he owed me over £3000. He never paid any of it back. Not until I moved out and tried to get him to.

So after I did leave, something I got no help with from him, because... Well I did it in secret. I saw a chance to get away from him and took it. Thank GOD I did. I was deeply depressed and my dad was against me taking anti-depressants. I was already on some, but had been calling them sleeping tablets to stop him from getting angry. Technically, they do make you drowsy, so it wasn’t quite a lie. But they did nothing for my depression. Which was at it’s breaking point. I moved out to a place only 10 minutes drive away. I regret being so scared to move further away. But this was my first time on my own. And I’ve got a few difficulties too that made it scarier.

During this time I struggled with rent far worse than i imagined. I asked my dad to help and he’d pull out £20 or one time £80 to help. I got whatever was in his pocket. And then one month he says “Don’t ask me for anymore money, not until October. I have it already all tied up in other things, sorry.” and so I stopped asked. October came, which was 4 months or more from then. And I forgot totally at this point to bring it up again. And so for another year I didn’t ask. And then another year. And in all that time he never once offered to pay me back. Never since this payment began growing did he ever offer to pay me back. He did offer to take me on holiday and said I could go for free, but, he’d not owe me anything anymore. It was a tempting deal, but I didn’t really like France that much. I said no.

Time went on and I heard abotu him going on holiday more and more, and buying new things, more cars. He had money to spare afterall, but still offered me nothing. Eventually our landlord decided to raise our rent by £100 a month. We were already overpaying for that crappy little place, and it wasn’t a case of “should we?” but “can we?”. And we could not. Oh “we” by the way is my roomate. The “partner” I mentioned earlier. So we had to move, and found a place 2/3 the cost and 3/2 the size much further away. It was a fantastic deal and we moved in.

My dad helped us move, by costing us around £1000. Because he did things cheaply, and told us to do things we werent allowed to do and got us fined. That needs it’s own post too. The damage he cause us is not something I added to the amount he owes though. I chose to just, not bring up that day at all.

So in our new place, doing well. Months of joy, when finally our old landlord tells us he’s not giving us our deposit back, but he also wants MORE money for damages. I didn’t even know this was legal to do. He took the deposit, and then a second amount the same. My mum had to come in and haggle for us because we were pretty much in tears over this. She saved us, and paid a lot of it for me. She expected my dad to do the same and save me, because this shock cost came out of nowhere and we were not ready. I dont have the amount on hand, but I recall I had to pay £800 myself, my mum paying more than that. £1500? £2000?

Anyway I ask my dad. Not to pay back what he owes, but to save me from seriously legal troubles. He did not help.

Over the next YEAR I was able to pay my mum back all that I owed her for bailing me out. And now I’m back on my feet, and could survive a shock payment if one somehow appeared. But I think I’m safe from that happening again. I hadn’t even thought about the money my dad owes me for ages now.

But this wedding, and talking to my little bro (yes finally back to the original topic) it came up. And my bro was like “Oh well I can talk to him and get that sorted. I was chuffed and said I’d go to the wedding. My dad is honestly fun to be around when it comes to parties. Well, as long as he’s not sober to be more precise. He was sober at one party, and was a huge killjoy. But it’s his wedding, he’s not gonna be a downer there! I was getting excited to see my whole family there, and have a great time and-

“Oh hey, your dad says he doesnt owe you that anymore.” What? Yeah what I got was a big load of messages from my bro telling me my dad didn’t think he owed me anymore because of things he’d done for me previously. Like some early holidays we went on. He also claimed to have “helped with rent” which was a very confusing thing to read. As if he was doing it periodically instead of the 3 times he did it.

Sadly this got me into venting a bit at how unreasonable it all was. I lost my cool. But I dont regret what i said. I imagined he’d go back and tell my dad and it’d get straightened out. I explained he did not help with rent nor did I owe him for any holidays, since the one time he asked me to pay, I declined.

I get a reply, my bro calls me entitled. Says so what if I paid for food and phone I used that stuff so I should pay for it. I’m in disbelief. He’s my dad, he provides for me. Besides you don’t tell someone afterwords “Oh you have to pay for those years of me helping you out”. That’s what pimps do. Other people probably do that too but I only saw it with pimps in the shows I watch.

So more ranting back that this was nuts, and that I just want my money back. I also lay into my dad’s spending habits, how he always has cash to burn, but never any for me. Fuck sake this wedding he’s having is costing him a hell of a lot more than £3000! Sadly this stuff I tell him is what he focuses on, saying my dad isn’t a bad spender cause he always buys cheap... yeah don’t I know it. Every birthday and Christmas I get a foreign or second hand phone or computer that breaks not long after. He’s a computer.. something. He gets this stuff dirt cheap thanks to his job. I couldnt really argue againt my bro there, but no way is that a positive.

But in al lthis arguing, it’s clear that my little bro has some bizarre ideas in his head if he thinks you can wave away owed money by being nice enough to someone. And he thinks me living with my dad is him being nice. But uh, that’s called being a parent, and it’s require by law. I wasn’t some friend staying there, I wasn’t a roomate. I was living in my dad’s house as his son. Jesus my lil bro is meant to be smart but what a fucking... Oh. He’s paying rent and food costs and all sorts. My dad’s gotten him paying for everything. He actually thinks this is normal. There is no low my dad wont sink to.

I can’t be mad at my bro, but it’s clear now that my dad plans on not paying me back. That’s theft. So, what should I do? I don’t want revenge, I don’t want to cost him anything, and I don’t want to take this to court because I know that could cost me. I’ll give it more time. But I hope he looks at my empty chair whilst he’s getting married and knows this is his fault I’m not there.

RHODODENDRON: What’s the scariest dream you’ve ever had?ooooh boy okay here’s this nightmare i had when i was like seven.so i was at this weird famous landmark (idk it doesnt exist irl); it was a castle and there was a bridge leading to it, but the piece of bridge that was connected to the castle had collapsed long ago. so you could only walk on the bridge, entry into the castle was not permitted as it was sort of in ruins. all that was rly intact was a tower. but anyways there were a bunch of tourists there on the bridhe, and i got lost in the crowd. seperated from my family. so i was like? where is my brother? cause he’s a couple years younger than me and i worry about him. and i heard a cry from that tower, so i freaked out cause it sounded just like him. well i being a delinquent make my way off the bridge and run through the shallow waters to the tower, trying to find him. the towers all stairs so i climb them, and when i finally reach the top it’s just this fucking torture tower and i’m like OH NO. and my brother isn’t there so i’m like OH NO. and i look around and realize there’s a woman in some gown that’s clearly from the same era as this castle. it’s all torn up and stained and such. but she looks young - like 20? so nothing makes sense. she notices me when i stare, and looks at me, and drops what i then notice is a knife she was cleaning. so i freak out and can’t breathe but she keeps staring at me and i’m like wow i’m really gonna die. and then she just starts smiling and she’s like “run.” and i can’t move and i’m worried about where the hell my brother actually is and i don’t run. so she starts screaming RUN! RUN! RUN! RUN! as she walks towards me and i finally get my legs to work and i run, downt the stairs, out of the tower, through the water, and she’s just walking after me, and i’m crying from fear, and i start running through the crowded bridge again trying to get help but no one will listen, and i turn around and see her in the crowd but no one else does, and i run again, and i trip, and she catches up to me and kneels down beside me and she’s like “not fast enough.” and i wake up then, and i’m actually crying, even though it was just a nightmare. but i can’t move. cause i have fucking sleep paralysis. and i start panicking. and i look to my bedroom door. and she’s fucking standing there with that cocky smile. and i think i’m screaming but no sounds coming out. and she’s just there.this nightmare reoccured at least ten times over the course of a year and each time i woke up with sleep paralysis and i saw her in my doorway.

ROAD TO THE OSCAR MAYER WIENER AWARDS 2K19

First Reformed, 2017 (dir. Paul Schrader)

Nominated for:  Best Original Screenplay

ok well uuhhh.  so u know how my plan was to watch as many oscar-nominated films this past week as possible before the awards show tonight.  well.  that uuhhhh didnt happen my dudes.  and not for lack of trying either!!  i searched high and low for theaters still showing The Favorite and all the show times I could find were while i was still at work, and its not available for rent on amazon video yet.  in fact i ran into this problem with a lot of the movies i wanted to see; theaters just werent showing them really.  which kinda doesnt make any sense cause u’d think movie theaters would jump at the opportunity to make extra money by showing oscar-nominated movies before the awards show for people who wanna check out the nominees. 

one movie i WAS able to find to rent on amazon video was First Reformed, one of a few movies on the noms list who only got one or two noms total.  paul schrader, the writer and director of this flick, previously directed timeless classics such as Raging Bull and Taxi Driver.  schrader became famous because of these two films for creating fantastic character studies, and i gotta say he lives up to his reputation with First Reformed.  its a dark, sometimes surreal, and layered look at the life of a priest who’s been through some tough shit, who now works for a large religious conglomerate preaching at a tiny “tourist trap” church that is known by the other preachers in Abundant Life as the “souvenir shop”.  his encounter with the husband of a woman who attends First Reformed sends him spiraling into self-doubt and questioning his own religion, and it all culminates in one final tragic scene that plays out like an emotional punch to the stomach

ill get back to that later but i’ll touch first on the things i really like about this film.  acting overall is very solid, but ethan hawke really delivers something fantastic with the character of reverend toller.  im kinda surprised he didnt get a best actor nom??  cause i thought he was really great.  ethan hawke is one of those actors thats been in a lot of stuff, but i can never remember WHAT i’ve seen him in, i just know hes a good actor who usually delivers solid performances.  amanda seyfried is in this too and she did pretty good, her performances for me always kinda range inbetween really good and not so great and here shes more towards the “really good” side. 

now another area where this movie got snubbed FOR SURE was the cinematography category cause this movie just looks divine.  a lot of use of natural lighting, lots of playing around with shadows and high-contrast lighting, dynamic framing of scenes.  and the movie is shot in an interesting aspect ratio of 1.37:1 (almost a perfect square) that i thought was a cool touch, it almost kinda closed things in so ur focus remains on the characters and their actions instead of the setting so much if that makes any sense.  idk it was unique and tried some different things which i feel makes it deserving of a cinematography nom but i guess the academy didnt feel the same way??

ok so the nom that it actually DID get, best original screenplay, is without a doubt this movie’s strongest asset.  the story is just.... so fucking smart, and so well-paced, dialogue feels natural but still leaves an impact, and the way this movie progresses into pure suspense by the end doesnt really hit u out of nowhere but still is jolting enough to really make u pay attention and sweat a little.  like.... holy shit.  this movies ending is so intense.  its not quite a horror movie but it kinda has some horror movie-ish moments in that it evokes such a visceral response from the viewer.  i know it was pretty disturbing for me at least, and it takes a lot to get me truly disturbed. 

shit i mean this movie was really good!!  after watching it im surprised its only got one nomination.  i suppose i could see there being some mixed feelings about how this movie ends, because its pretty surreal and its unclear if what is going on is actually whats happening or if its metaphorical/an illusion/etc.  but really thats the only issue i had with it.  guh idk man im like kinda expecting tonights awards ceremony to be a bit of a shit show but we’ll see what happens.
