So if you're at all curious about how we do the 3D printing for the Mabinogi models it's actually kinda cool in a really dumb way.
First we rip the old game files and upload them into Blender 2.78 where I can then import them as a PMG and export them as a proper OBJ since most things outside of Mabinogi have no clue what a PMG is suppose to look like. The models often have big squares where transparent textures should be and are horrifying with a bunch of flat planes everywhere. They are far too thin to print and generally have a lot of clipping and other potential problems.

After I export it from 2.78 I can import the newly exported OBJ file in 3.1 where I can now directly edit and fix the model, in this case I'm adding pegs and peg holes to limbs so they can be accurately attached to the body as well as filling in thin areas, and fixing any clipping issues or random holes/non-existent planes that would otherwise be covered by a texture. It's important to remember these files were not designed with printing in mind, so they work just fine being loaded into a game with textures and transparency and floating parts connected by code, but when you try to print them you're going to have a ton of issues.
Here I've aligned everything to be printed in such a way as to make it as easy as possible to print without too many supports as to reduce time and filament cost per print.

I actually had to end up slicing the whole thing in half and mirror it as to reduce the sheer amount of work I'd have to do converting it to something we refer to as "thick and printable"
Speaking of which, once I'm done editing and fixing the model so it can actually be properly printed, I load it into Cura and figure out the best size and settings,

I figured out the settings to get the model to print at roughly 6-7 inches give or take .5 should my calculations be correct here.

The fun part of printing these is that your print can screw up horribly if the bed isn't level, if the bed isn't hot enough or is too hot, if the nozzle is too hot or not hot enough, if the machine is moving too fast or too slow, if you didn't glue the surface well enough, if you didn't let the glue set long enough, if the machine happens to clog, or just about any other bullshit reason the machine might throw at you. The result of which is that you have to babysit the machine for a lot of the early stages to make sure everything is working, unfortunately it looks as though a lot of it isn't sticking or is sticking incorrectly however I'm going to give it a few layers to potentially correct itself as it sometimes manages to and for now it's only building the raft and supports so nothing too important has been entirely lost if it does fix itself. The image you're seeing above is from 11 minutes into the print.
And this image is current at 50 minutes in, amazingly showing everything printing just as it should.

This print is projected to be roughly 10 hours long according to the machine however I'm predicting closer to 15 - 17 since the computers prediction at 50% speed was 14 and I'm running it 50% slower than that (I guess I technically could have just said 25% total speed but it's literally 50% of the 50%)
The only thing I'm worried about is how it's not projecting any supports for the pegs somehow, it just expects to print on thin air...
This confuses me greatly

2021 Summer Painting Challenge: Retrospective

Summer has come to an end, and with it Warboss Tae's 2021 Summer Painting Challenge. That was... a lot of painting, most of which has been collected above. Huge thanks go out to Tae - if you haven't checked out his youtube channel you can do so HERE, as well as to all of the other participants. There were a lot of cool projects, and you can see them all on Tae's discord HERE.
My main goal in participating was to get together a fully painted starter army together. Despite some stumbles along the way I'm happy to say I met that goal, with a small but playable Soulblight Gravelord core units of 20 skeletons, 20 zombies, and 10 dire wolves, a couple elite unit options in the Blood-born and Vargskyr, plus a selection of hero options including a Vampire Lord that I'm quite proud of plus a couple necromancers, not to mention the named character options from Cursed City and the Underworlds Warbands.
Speaking of underworlds, I now have three fully painted warbands to play against my roommate in that game. And I made some progress on the long overdue Ravenguard commission, so that's cool.
More importantly, for the first time since I came up with this paint scheme way back when the Oldhammer Fantasy 8th edition Vamp Counts book was released, I finally have enough painted models to put them all together and have a feel for the overall effect, and yeah, I'm pretty happy with it.
I definitely learned a few things along the way - though as per usual it mostly came from mistakes. Looking at what I learned/screwed up month by month...
JUNE
Pledged - Cursed City, 3 Underworlds Warbands, 4 Sidequests Completed - Everything, though the Sidequests got extra time
June was the only month where I actually met my pledge, despite it being the most ambitious of the pledges by a fair bit. But the pace I set was absolutely unsustainable and I was already crashing by the end. In the future I'll have to set a more realistic pace.
Other things I learned: Don't use your good brush for washes (RIP my favorite brush), you can wash a wet palette in the dishwasher, but only if you take it out before the dry cycle (RIP my palette). I also think I went a bit too excessive on the greens. I want the army overall to be darker so the greens pop more, so moving forward I'm using more black cloth, reserving green cloth for detail bits, and details like gravestones and rope that I painted ghosty greens on the June models are greys and browns after.
On a more positive note, I really liked how the black armor with green highlights turned out on the Crimson Court, and have decided to make that the distinctive feature of vampire models in my army going forward. The process is a pain, and I will eventually have to go back and re-paint the dragon lord's armor to match, but it's worth it.
JULY
Pledged: 10 Zombies, 10 Dire Wolves, Rhino Completed: 10 Zombies, Rhino
I was already crashing hard when July started and ended up spending most of my free time in the early part of the month playing video games. I though I had balanced this out by aiming for a reduced pledge and not committing to daily updates, but a smaller pledge than June was still way too more than I could sustainably handle, and without the daily updates I ended up letting my break run on way too long, plus I was stuck out of town for a week. But while I may have failed my pledge, I still got 10 nice looking zombies done, plus the commission rhino, which is a lot for me, and I was really on a roll going into August.
The main thing I learned is that regular posting does a lot to keep me engaged with the hobby, and that's something I'd like to try to continue after the challenge is done.
AUGUST
Pledged: 10 Skeletons, 5 Blood Knights, 1 piece of terrain Finished: 10 Skeletons, July's Dire Wolves, June's Sidequests
I honestly should have known better that to pledge so much with so much leftover work to do, including the sidequest tutorials that I still needed in order to confirm my project from back in June, but I was on a high and on a roll at the end of July, and I let my ambitions get away from me. And I knew almost immediately that I had made a mistake, just assembling the Blood Knights I could tell that each one of them was going to require more work than most of the heroes I've painted.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the most important thing I learned. The most important thing was that Army Painter brand black primer is SUPER grainy, to the point of obscuring some of the surface texture and details of the models I sprayed it on, which tragically includes the Blood Knights. They weren't quite as badly done by as the poor skeletons, but on such a cool and important unit it's still a bit disheartening.
On a positive note, I learned from the dire wolves that hexwraith flame can be used in my paint scheme to punch up saturation a bit & add a bit of slimy green gore effect that I quite like. At some point I'll have to go back and use it to punch up the zombies & maybe the zombie dragon a bit.
So where do I go from here?
I'm going to be out of town till the middle of next week, but when I do get back I want to keep up the monthly goals with regular update posts. Maybe not every day, but a few times a week at least. But I don't want this to be my only hobby, either. I got games to play, and now that hectic summer vacation schedules have calmed down I've got a family D&D campaign to start running again. Plus some other stuff to work on. So I'm going to try to keep future commitments more manageable. One unit per month sounds about right.
I need to make some more progress on the Raven Guard commission, and I want to save October for something spooky and undead, so for September I think the one unit will be a Raven Guard landspeeder.
I'd also like to actually get to the local store to try to get a game or two in with my newly painted models. If I do, I'll be sure to take some pictures and report back to you on how badly I get thrashed.

Chloe watched from the top of the stairwell.
“They look utterly ridiculous!” She stormed off with Sabrina close behind. “What does Adrien even see in Dupain-Cheng?”
“I-I don’t know, Chloe. I don’t know why he’d date her.” Sabrina reassured her. “Maybe— maybe he’s trying to make you jealous because he’s actually in love with you!”
“Adrien wouldn’t do that!” Chloe snapped, causing Sabrina to almost drop her bag. “We’re childhood friends. Our bond is unbreakable— even Gabriel Agreste agrees.” She emphasized his name. “If Dupain-Cheng really thinks that she’s enough for Adrien, she’ll soon realize she’s sorely mistaken.”
“Ms. Bustier!” Alya approached the teacher before class. “Can I switch seats with Adrien? Marinette and I are... having a disagreement.”
“Of course. Do you want to talk about the problem?” The teacher smiled.
“Nope. Have a good day!” Alya ran off and waved at Ms. Bustier.
“Girl, I got a surprise for you!” Alya hugged Marinette. “You’ll see it in class.”
“What?” Marinette asked, but she was already being whisked off to Ms. Bustier’s class.
“Alya, switch seats with Adrien please.” Ms. Bustier said as she entered the classroom.
Marinette was now seated next to Adrien, just like Alya intended. Marinette looked back at her BFF who gave her a wink. It was gonna be a good class.
Chloe was fuming across the aisle. She stood up suddenly and slammed her hands on the desk.
“Ms. Bustier, can I change seats? With Marinette?” She practically growled.
“Um, calm down Chloe.” Ms Bustier said nervously. “If you want a new seat, you can sit next to Lila.” She gestured to the seat in the back row.
Chloe was upset, but took her bag and sat down next to Lila nonetheless. She might as well be alone with her thoughts.
“Today we’ll be working on your essays due next Friday. You can peer edit with your desk partner.” Ms Bustier explained, handing out paper to the students. “Make sure to give constructive feedback.”
Everyone in the class was chatting instantly, except Chloe and Lila. Marinette and Adrien were sitting in the front row, laughing and smiling. Chloe wrote so angrily that her pencil tip snapped. She got up and crossed the room to sharpen it, all the while having to watch Adrien and Marinette share their essays.
Chloe sat back down, a look of pure anger still on her face. She picked up her essay, and noticed something written neatly on the top.
“Do you want Adrien back?” The neat cursive read.
Chloe turned to the girl sitting next to her, who was quietly writing. Lila looked at her out of the corner of her eye with a knowing smile.
“What do you want?” Chloe said in a low voice, looking back at her essay.
“The same thing you want.” Lila said without looking up from her paper. “I can break them up. I just need a small favor from you.”
“What is it?”
“Buy me an Adobe photoshop subscription.”
“What? Why?” Chloe was shocked. Why would Lila need photoshop?
“Do it and Adrien is yours.” Lila promised.
“I want an explanation first.” Chloe crossed her arms, leaning back in the seat.
Lila paused from her writing, and looked at Chloe.
“...I need to photoshop a picture of myself with some celebrities.” She explained quietly. “If you tell anyone—“
“So you’re a liar?” Chloe scoffed. “Whatever. You’re good, I’ll give you that.”
Lila rolled her eyes and extended her hand. “Do we have a deal?”
Chloe hesitated. “Fine.”
They shook hands.
There was a beat of silence before Chloe spoke up.
“Don’t you have an allowance?”
“Not after I bombed the mock exams from last week.”
“Ah.”
“Would you like to come over during lunch break, Adrien? My dad made fruit cake!” Marinette asked as she walked down the front steps.
“Sure! Your parents are super nice. And they’re good bakers.” Adrien took Marinette’s hand as they walked over to the bakery.
Chloe stormed up to Lila after watching the couple leave.
“You said you’d break them up! I should’ve known you wouldn’t actually—“
“These things take time. Calm down.” Lila responded. “Look, I’m modeling with Adrien later today. I’ll work on it then.”
“I don’t have time to wait!” Chloe yelled. “I’m taking action now.”
Lila grabbed Chloe’s arm, stopping her from chasing the couple. “If you’re going to do something, at least let me come with you so you don’t do anything stupid.” Lila said harshly.
“Hi Adrien!” The Dupain-Chengs greeted him. “You can head upstairs, there’s food in the fridge.”
“Thanks Mom.” Marinette kissed her mother on the cheek and hugged her dad. “Cmon Adrien.”
Only a minute later, Chloe and Lila walked into the bakery.
“Hello!” Lila smiled at the bakers. “Marinette forgot her phone at school, so Chloe and I thought we’d bring it back to her.”
“Oh thank you, girls. You can leave it here.” She pointed next to the cash register.
“Could we actually go see her? We have some drama to tell her about!” Lila gave her best exaggerated laugh.
“...alright, head upstairs.” Sabine said. “Oh and Chloe—“ she turned to her, “I’m glad you and Marinette are now friends.”
“Yeah we’re f-f...friends.” Chloe hissed forcefully.
Lila scoffed at her horrible lying. “Let’s go!” She pulled Chloe upstairs.
The two girls managed to slip past the couple since they were playing video games. They snooped around Marinette’s room, looking for something to use against Marinette.
“Here” Lila said, taking pictures of Adrien off of the wall. “We just need him to come upstairs.” She explained as she tore up the pictures.
“How do we do that?” Chloe whispered, watching as Lila scattered ripped pictures across the floor.
“Knock over the mannequin. Then we can hide up there.” Lila pointed to the hatch that lead to the balcony.
Chloe pushed the mannequin over, and the two girls escaped to the balcony.
“What was that?” Marinette said, hearing a thump come from her room. “I’ll go check it out.”
She walked up the stairs to her room, leaving Adrien alone in her living room.
“I’ve got a bad feeling about this.” He whispered to Plagg. “I’m going to transform and enter from the balcony to help her.”
Marinette gasped, seeing her pictures on the floor. She picked the mannequin back up, and looked around the room for any evidence.
“Marinette, someone broke in!” Tikki whispered. “Transform! It might be dangerous.”
“Okay, but we need to hurry. I don’t want Adrien to come up here.”
Chloe and Lila crouched on the balcony, listening for arguing downstairs.
“Where are they?” Chloe stood up, but before she could check, she heard a voice from behind her.
“Breaking and entering, ladies?” Chat Noir landed on the balcony. “Shameful.” For once, he didn’t look like he was joking.
“Chat Noir! Ladybug told us to hide here because—“ Lila began, but was soon interrupted by a flash of red.
“Did I?” Ladybug glared at the girls. “What happened here, Chat?”
“These girls broke into your— I mean, Marinette’s house. I didn’t see any real damage luckily.” He explained, standing next to ladybug.
“You’ve really outdone yourself, Lila.” Ladybug clapped mockingly. “Bringing Chloe into this? Out of jealousy? You’re sick.”
“There’s morning you can do about it.” Lila stood up, clenching her fists. “Adrien will be mine, and Marinette can’t stop me.”
Chat Noir snapped. “You do not get to threaten Marinette. She’s more talented than you. She’s smarter than you. She will not lose to you. And if you think you can mess with her, then you need to think again. Because if you do anything to Marinette, I will do the same to you.” He said angrily, causing Lila to step back in fear.
Ladybug seemed almost as shocked as Lila at Chat’s anger. He’d never been this serious before. But she did feel safer knowing that Lila wasn’t going to bother her anymore.
Ladybug looked at Chloe, almost feeling bad for her. She was just lonely— she wasn’t evil like Lila. But both superheroes left the scene as quickly as they had arrived.
Chloe was frozen on the balcony, hating herself. She angered her hero and literally committed a crime—
“Get up.” Lila pulled her up. “I have one last thing to do.”
“Nothing can fix this.” Chloe had tears in her eyes— she’d never be queen bee again.
“Yes, but I can still take down Marinette.” Lila reassured her.
“Thank you for bringing this to my attention, Lila.” Gabriel shook the girl’s hand. “I’ll make sure to break them up.”
Lila grinned on her way out. She always won.
“Nathalie, go to the Dupain-Cheng bakery. I need to speak with them.” Gabriel turned to his tablet, already planning the next akumatization. “Marinette Dupain Cheng will be my masterpiece.”
*I’m not sure where this prompt even went to be honest— writing chloe and Lila was interesting though. I do think they’d be good scheming partners. Hello!
I’m MLys, I’m a 27 years old French simmer and I’ve been sharing maxis match custom content for The Sims 4 for three years.
I’ve discovered the game with The Sims 1 back when I was 9 and I immediately fell in love. I still remember when I’ve unwrapped the base game and Vacation EP at Christmas! Thereafter, I’ve been a huge Sims 2 player (gameplay wise it’s still my favorite of the franchise), skipped The Sims 3, and out of curiosity and nostalgia, came back to the game with The Sims 4 without a lot of expectations. I just wanted to play time to time in my corner, mostly as a builder, and didn’t have any intention to start a blog and create CC.
The need of creating my own custom content quickly came up because I felt frustrated to not find the items I needed to design my builds the way I imagined them. I already downloaded CC as a kid, and was sooo obsessed about it back then! I ingeniously wished I could be able to do the same and run my own sims download website, but it wasn’t easy to find proper tutorials in French (and I most likely wasn’t mature and skilled enough ahah) so I had no idea how all those things worked. I just accepted that it was some computer magic. Several years and more experience later, that sweet memory contributed to make me want to give it a try and take my revenge!

My Exhibition set, specially made for the museum I was building, was the first CC I completed and shared on my blog. The set was very simple, but it was already foreshadowing what I would particularly love to do ever since: trying to expand the lore of the Simverse! As it can be deduced from this set, I was very inspired by the creative @femmeonamission’s Great Art Serie and the principle of only using resources from the game. Simlish fonts weren’t enough, I wanted to embrace the fact that the Sims live in a similar but alternative world to ours, with its own peculiarities and silly historical background.

I’ve started to become a build mode catalog and Sims Wiki nerd, trying to collect Sim cultural references from all the games and brainstorm head canons that I could exploit for my builds backstories and CC design. I just need a consistent universe!!
I loved to imagine swatches for my tucked tee, which illustrates that approach pretty well. The TS4 concept artists have created so many cute and creative little gems in the game that need a second life, like the base game paintings and the movies from the Movie Hangout SP.
An other example is of course my baby Pufferhead Stuff, that was initially supposed to be a tiny set inspired by a base game poster, but that ended up being a liiiiittle bit more ambitious, whoops. I spent an outrageous time working on all the details I could think about to make the pack cohesive and refer to Harry Potter without losing the maxis match spirit. I am so so touched when I see simmers considering some elements from Pufferhead as canon in their game! During the process, I genuinely thought that I spent a useless time on things that most simmers would barely pay attention to, such as the Harnock sorting test, so it was really rewarding to discover that people actually appreciated the effort!

The second part of the Exhibition set that I’ve made with @aroundthesims has a very special spot in my heart. I’ve been a big fan of Sandy’s work since day 1, and downloaded everything she did. When I’ve started to share CC, I needed to fangirl in her DM to tell her how she inspired me. It must sound silly, but when she proposed to collaborate, I felt so crazy happy and proud! If mini-MLys playing sims in her bedroom full of dolphin and HP posters had heard about that, her brain would have been like “Can’t… compute…”

I can’t introduce myself either without talking about my friends from The @Plumbobteasociety!  They’re the first friends I’ve ever made online and I love them (I’ve even met some irl!). Working on Cottage Garden Stuff with them was a blast. There was a real team spirit and it definitely made me progress. Never I would have been able to work by myself on Pufferhead without the Cottage Garden experience and without their support!

There is something very fulfilling in collaborating with someone that got skills that you don’t have, and managing together to create something cool. I had that feeling with those projects, but also with the talented @illogicalsims who accepted to make the render of Pufferhead. It really was out of my current ability and his final render is fully part of the identity of the pack and I’m sure contributed to valorize it, so I can’t thank him enough for that!

…Like for real. I don’t try to be mushy or something. That simblr really helped me at times when I needed it. I definitely have a creative profile, but without a specific goal in mind, I tend to want to do and learn so much things at the same time, that I end up feeling overwhelmed and uninspired, and don’t practice anything. And then I feel frustrated and can’t manage to have a consistent hobby. When I started the blog, I totally underestimated all the various skills it would actually make me work on: 3d modeling, texturing, editing, illustration, storytelling, my English… and even video editing for the Pufferhead trailer! I admit that I haven’t talked about that blog to a lot of my irl friends, because I’m afraid they wouldn’t understand that it’s not “unworthy”. And well, I myself also devalue a lot what I produce in general. I’m working on feeling more confident and share with them all the good memories and touching moments I have from my simming experience! All the adorable support I’ve received here through those last 3 years really really helped for that, and I can’t express how much it means to me <3

Final Fantasy XV is a staple for modern day Square Enix that has one of the most bizarre development cycles and releases in gaming. Square Enix even stated that this was intentional in order to promote a “games as a service” model in order to keep providing for the consumers. Final Fantasy XV has continued to grow as its own brand since its release nearly 3 years ago with a full length feature film, an anime series, two mobile games, DLC and free updates to further “polish” the game. Square Enix is continuing to expand the reach of this multimedia powerhouse with the release of Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition for the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One; an HD port of a “demake” originally made for mobile platforms. This demake somehow manages to capture the spirit of the original while adding some minor adjustments to make the originally once bumpy road trip a little smoother.

Final Fantasy: Pocket Edition HD retains the exact main plot from the original console release, even going as far as using the same audio and cutscenes; just chibi-fied. Set in a fantastical modern land, or a “fantasy based on reality”, Prince Noctis of the kingdom Lucis, must travel with his three companions to be wed to Lady Lunafreya of Tenebrae to complete a peace treaty. Thing don’t go exactly as planned as the peace treaty is very soon breached by the enemy nation, Niflheim, and the four boys must go on a journey to save the people of Lucis. In the original release I was baffled by how little of the story there was in the main game; a good chunk of it was found in supplemental material, specifically the anime series and the movie, like how the four boys became friends and how the peace treaty was breached in the first place; all of which are kind of crucial to the plot. To put it frankly the original story was a mess, important battles and events occur off screen, characters aren’t introduced or have purpose but the player is expected to care about them, time-skips happen often, almost no time is spent on the rival empire Niflheim and a lot of the characters associated with it go nowhere. It's just a weird occurrence when a randomly introduced man named Jared gets three main story quests devoted to him when the main antagonists get no screen time, some characters even only appear for one in the entire game. The main four characters,  Noctis, Ignis, Prompto and Gladio, and their “roadtrip” are meant to be the heart and soul of the adventure; and they really are. Their interactions are charming, amusing and downright funny I love the brotherly bond the four share throughout the journey and during gameplay; its just annoying to realize that there is no in-game explanation as to how the four became friends in the first place! The story was, and is still, definitely a mess but the game developers tried to alleviate some of these issues through updates and DLC; although not perfect, the game is in way better shape than it was when it originally released.

Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition HD contains most of the major hiccups of the original release since its story is almost 1:1 with the original just with a new coat of paint, but it still manages to improve in some areas. One thing that stood out to me the moment I started it was the added “context” found before cut scenes; text blurbs occasionally appear to inform new players about the lore and the general story which helps comprehension immensely and is something that should have been in the original release to begin with. Another way Pocket Edition HD improves upon the story is by providing NPC dialogue strictly regarding the plot; this helps with world building and keeps the player invested in the story. One of the most common complaints about the original release was the lack of urgency since the plot seemed very “linear” but the game itself  was open world so a lot of that plot tension was lost. Since Pocket Edition HD is a linear experience, the plot isn’t lost upon the player and is almost always the focus.

The entire game has been compressed into a cute, chibi art style that is very similar to the 2007 FFIV Remake for the Nintendo DS and 2013’s Bravely Default for the Nintendo 3DS. The art-style is distinct and translates the character designs well but the animations leave a lot to be desired. It feels as though they cheapened out on animations during cut scenes rather than it being part of the “demake” experience. The voice clips are all ripped from the console edition so some dramatic scenes come off as goofy rather than emotional. Pop-in is common and the game chugs while in docked-mode; in handheld mode the game runs at a smooth 60 fps most of the time. The menus are nothing special either; they feel pretty empty, boring and bare bones. It's not horrible for a mobile title, but for a $30 Nintendo Switch game this is bit disappointing.

Pocket Edition HD takes the console version and streamlines it to become a linear adventure rather than an open-world one. The world of Eos in the original release was vast but empty; it was just big for the sake of being big with nothing to do. Pocket Edition’s linearity is actually a benefit since the game seems a lot more focused, the plot is more cohesive and it feels more like a game rather than a walking simulator. The combat system has been overhauled but not for the best. As someone with 90 hours in the original release, I learnt the “depth” of the combat system but it wasn’t entirely enticing; it eventually watered down into mashing warps and holding buttons to block every attack in the game. It wasn’t deep or engaging,it kinda was just there. Now PE: HD takes this already watered down combat and dilutes it down even more. Each party member fights on their own while the player can only control Noctis. A single button is held to automatically attack the enemy you’re targeting, while occasional prompts appear that give you the option to perform a special attack with one of your teammates. Noctis can warp-strike to any enemy on the field at the cost of MP, and occasional QTEs can give you a brief window in which an incoming attack can be dodged or parried. The combat system is very bare-bones and fun at first, but it begins to drag once you realize it doesn’t get any more intricate. It’s stale and just plain easy;  there is almost no challenge whatsoever. You can pause the game at any time to consume many readily available Potions to restore HP and the enemies go down fast.

In a similar fashion, the progression system is a watered down version of the console version. XP is awarded to party members after each battle and is applied at the end of each story mission. Leveling up party members allows for upgraded stats and AP to be gained. These Ability Points can be used on the bare-bones skill-tree to obtain new skills for the party; the skill-tree is just kinda basic and boring especially taking into consideration that enemies die easily to basic attacks as is.

Final Fantasy XV is Square-Enix’s new cash-cow and as such is being distributed to every platform imaginable. Square’s newest venture with the XV brand, Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition HD is a bizarre one and tough sell. This mobile app “demake” up-scaled for HD on the Nintendo Switch is a strange concept that lands in the story department for the most-part but lacks greatly in regards to game-play. It's a very strange release that serves little purpose considering the original release is a bit cheaper than this mobile title ported to the Nintendo Switch. It gets the job done if you want to experience XV without access to any other console but the price-point is just too high to justify the purchase.

how do you make poses for the roof? i'm not sure how i can know if the sims will clip into the roof or float
honestly i just...eyeball it...because all roofs are different and you can’t put them into blender so. i just winged it lmao...i just made a pose that looked like it could’ve been lou climbing out the window, only the rig was still ground level, and then i used alt + 9 to lift the teleporter onto the roof as best as i could. that’s why it probably wouldn’t be a very practical pose to release, because i have no way of making it easy to use

A few years back Apple made the dubious decision to remove iWeb from it’s iLife suite of creativity programs. iWeb itself wasn’t that great when it came to producing websites, but it was incredibly easy to use and the removal outraged many amateurs who wanted to create their own website or blog.
RapidWeaver 5 from RealMac Software seeks to bridge the gap that has been left by the removal of iWeb, by providing an easy to use platform for Mac users. That being said, when you actually dig down in to it it’s a much more powerful tool than iWeb ever was.
Creating a site
RapidWeaver makes it incredibly easy to start planning your site. All you need to have in your head is a basic idea of the layout of your site, and RapidWeaver will help you make it a reality, quickly.
When you first launch the software you’re presented with a splash window that gives you the option to pick up on an existing project, start a new one, browse the library of add-ons (more on that later) and view online instructional videos.
On selecting the “Create a new Project…” option, you’ll be presented with the main design and preview window, which allows you to plan the layout of your site, as well as produce the content that will fill each page. The entire process is pretty intuitive, the only annoying thing is that any references to online sources (YouTube videos for example) won’t display properly in the preview pane, which can only show local content. This could prove annoying if your website will rely heavily on content scraped from other sites.
Although it didn’t have a couple of bugs for me, the publishing side of RapidWeaver works very well (in theory, anyway). If you make a change to a site that you’ve already published, you won’t need to re-upload the whole thing. RapidWeaver will check which pages and files have been amended and then only send those files to your website via FTP (File Transfer Protocol). This could be of great benefit as your site grows, especially if you only have a modest Internet connection.
Tutoring
RealMac Software have gone to great lengths to provide written and video tutorials for RapidWeaver on their website. In order to access the “Beginners” guides, all you have to do is sigh up for a free account. The videos cover basic things, such as how to add content and change themes, to more advanced things like text and image formatting and publishing.
However, in order to access the “Intermediate” and “Advanced” videos, you’ll need to sign up for a support subscription at $9.95 a month. The videos themselves cover some great topics such as theme editing, advanced gallery and blog functions and reducing the file size of your project. However, I have a real problem with this type of support model. In my view, if you buy a product you should receive a decent set of instructions on how to use all of its features, for free. To charge people an additional subscription fee in order to be able to use their software to the fullest seems a little bit like you’re squeezing them dry.
For the purposes of this review, I’ve not bothered to pay for a subscription, so I can’t comment on the videos themselves, but if it helps there are quite a few instructional videos on YouTube from other RapidWeaver users.
Plugins and Add-ons
Although RapidWeaver comes with 47 themes built in, you’ll probably find yourself struggling to make your site original within a short while. Not only that, but the limitations when it comes to layout and choice of content mean that you might not be able to include everything in your site that you might want.

That being said, the online catalogue does list some add-ons that would potentially be very useful. There are several that would add excellent catalogue and e-commerce support to your site, plus several that promise to add additional functionality when it comes to designing your site.
In truth, I don’t like this business model at all, I would much rather spend more on a package which includes all of these features right out of the box, rather than buy a relatively cheap product and then have to buy add ons in order to make it do the things that I want.

On the one hand I do like the ease of use and the simplicity of the interface. It requires absolutely no previous experience of web design or HTML in order to produce decent looking websites in minutes. The themes and templates themselves also seem to be a lot more solid than iWeb, which had a tendency to break if you didn’t do exactly as Apple predicted you might.
On the downside, I don’t care for the limited features and themes that come with the product out of the box, or the limited video support that could find you signing up for a support contract in order to find out exactly what you need to do. You could also say that the add-on system is a rip-off, but in truth there will be those that only want the basic features, so why make them pay for things they’re not going to use. There is some logic at least to that, even if I don’t personally agree with it.

On the whole, RapidWeaver 5 is an excellent tool for beginners and hobbyists, and more than fills the hole left by Apple when they removed iWeb from their arsenal. More adventurous or experienced users may find that they outgrow RapidWeaver’s basic functions quite quickly, in which case there’s the add-on and theme libraries on Realmac’s website. However, professionals (budding or experienced) should avoid RapidWeaver, it simply doesn’t allow for the level of customisation and originality that your clients will expect.

UNITY 3D Interview Questions 11. How do you feel about crunching? At smaller studios, this is the 64 million dollar question. My advice is to be 100 percent honest. If you won't crunch, say so now. It may well put you out of the running for a job, but ultimately that's a good thing. No, really, it is! If the company works a lot of overtime and you don't want to do it, then taking the job is going to be punishing for everyone. Having said that, the last thing any interviewer wants to hear is, "I won't do it" because that predicates a perceived lack of involvement and passion (not that passion should equal overtime, but the perception of refusing to do something before you're even in the circumstances could be the difference between getting a job offer and having the company pass you up). Phrase your answer in such a way that you don't sound confrontational with the interviewer. She doesn't want to get into an argument; she just wants to know where you stand. Understand that this question is meant to gauge, roughly, how you might fit into the company culture. 12. How would you make the games you're playing better? You'd be surprised how often this question comes up, even if you aren't interviewing for a design position. Everyone wants a developer who has design sensibilities because it inevitably means she or he will be more involved and engaged in whatever is going on. Knowing ahead of time how you might answer this question means you'll come off sounding like you've actually thought about a game in development terms. Game studios are looking for people who think as they play -- about what they're playing, how it's done, what could have been improved, and most importantly, what they can rip off. One downside to adopting this mentality is that it becomes harder to enjoy a game for what it is, but that's an occupational hazard in all jobs. Believe it or not, you can answer this question in an entirely positive way. However, if you decide instead to criticize a design or implementation decision in a game, be sure you have a solution to the problem too. It's not enough to moan about the final strider battle in Half-Life 2: Episode 2; you have to have an idea of how it could have been made more enjoyable, perhaps through easier car control, or not destroying all the supply stations so quickly. If you decide to bash a game that the company where you're interviewing developed (and that takes courage; some companies will applaud you while others will diss you for not drinking the Kool-Aid), then ensure that what you're criticizing isn't something subjective but something that everyone has had a pop at. Personally, I love this question because it reveals if a prospective candidate has a plan at all or is just drifting from job to job as so many are wont to do. There's nothing wrong per se with people who drift along the currents, it's just that those with a plan (or at least a desire to move in a particular direction) are generally much more interesting people. Plus, they are almost always inherently more predictable, which is always a benefit for employers. Having a desire to move forward helps everyone. It helps you measure your progress, and it gives the company a plan to help you get there. Of course, it does depend on you knowing what you want. Most people tend to know what they don't want, but not necessarily what they do want, which is a problem -- particularly if you express that in an interview. Interviewers would rather have a list of things you want to attain rather than things you don't. One optimal answer is, "Still working for you making games," but it smacks of sucking up, so I'd recommend saying something a little more generic: "Still looking for a challenge and putting in that extra effort to make great games." The best response I've ever heard to that question was, "I want your job!" and the individual who said it to me indeed has my old job! But be wary of sounding confrontational. 15. Why vectors should be normalized when used to move an object? Normalization makes the vector unit length. It means, for instance, that if you want to move with speed 20.0, multiplying speed * vector will result in a precise 20.0 units per step. (This question implicitly includes, "Why do you want to leave where you are?" if you're currently employed.) This question is an open opportunity to show you've done some research on the company where you're interviewing. All companies and interviewers are flattered when the interviewee knows who they are, knows what games they make, and wants to be a part of their experience. Do your homework and put on a good show! Don't say things like, "I need a job," or "I need to move to Sacramento." Instead, pick a few things that are germane to the company in question. The more specific your reasons are tied to the company, the better. "I want to work on FPS shooters" isn't as good an answer as "I want to work on Game Franchise X because I played the first two games and still see potential for future growth of the product." It's sycophantic, yes, but interviewers are as prone to flattery as anyone else -- although don't give that as your only reason. When explaining why you want to leave your current job, the trick is to not be negative. Pick a couple of points that are inarguable, for example, "There was no career development" or "They weren't working on the kinds of games I'm interested in," rather than "Their management is clueless and they are going to die soon." The game industry is a small community -- you could very well be talking smack about your interviewer's close buddy. If you were let go or fired, it's better to say something like, "We decided to part ways," or "It was my time to leave," rather than go into too much detail, unless directly pressed. In that case, the interviewer probably already knows what went down and is just looking to see what you'll say. Answer the question quickly and without negativity, and move on. You want to leave a positive impression. 17. Why deferred lighting optimizes scenes with a lot of lights and elements? During rendering, each pixel is calculated whether it should be illuminated and receive lightning influence, and this is repeated for each light. After approximately eight repeated calculations for different lights in the scene, the overhead becomes significant. For large scenes, the number of pixels rendered is usually bigger than the number of pixels in the screen itself. Deferred Lighting makes the scene render all pixels without illumination (which is fast), and with extra information (at a cost of low overhead), it calculates the illumination step only for the pixels of the screen buffer (which is less than all pixels processed for each element). This technique allow much more light instances in the project. 18. Can two GameObjects, each with only an SphereCollider, both set as trigger and raise OnTrigger events? Explain your answer? No. Collision events between two objects can only be raised when one of them has a RigidBody attached to it. This is a common error when implementing applications that use "physics." 19. What is an Unity3D file and how can you open a unity3d file? A Unity3D files are scene web player files created by Unity; an application used to develop 3D games. These files consist of all assets and other game data in a single archive, and are used to enable gameplay within a browser that has the Unity Web Player Plugin. The assets within a 3D unity file are saved in a proprietary closed format. 20. What's your biggest weakness? Or, if I hired you, what would I regret about it in six months? This is a common question in all job interviews. There are generally two kinds of responses: the brutally honest and damning one ("I get upset with people who don't carry their load"), and the sycophantic one ("I'm a perfectionist"). What most employers are looking for is an honest answer that is followed up with an example of something you have done to work on your weakness. For example, you can say, "My workspace tends to become extremely disorganized," as long as you follow it up with, "but recently, I've put in a lot of effort to go paperless, and I'm extremely systematic in the way I manage my email inbox." The other secret to this question is not so much in the answer but how long you take to respond. If you answer too quickly, you might be suggesting that you already know all your worst points because they are blatantly obvious and you've been told so many times. If you take too long, it will seem as if you're searching for an answer that sounds good, doesn't make you look bad, and is something the interviewer would be happy to hear. Again, it gives the perception that you are being ingratiating rather than honest. By the way, the best answer I've heard is, "I don't know. What do you think I'd regret in six months if I worked here?" 21. What is Fixed Timestep in Unity3D? Why does Fixed Timestep setting affect game speed? Fixed Timestep feature helps to set the system updates at fixed time interval. A queue like mechanism will manage all real-time events that are accumulated between time epochs. If frame-rate drops below some threshold limit set for fixed timestep, then it can affect the game speed. 22. Explain, in a few words, what roles the inspector, project and hierarchy panels in the Unity editor have. Which is responsible for referencing the content that will be included in the build process? The inspector panel allows users to modify numeric values (such as position, rotation and scale), drag and drop references of scene objects (like Prefabs, Materials and Game Objects), and others. Also it can show a custom-made UI, created by the user, by using Editor scripts. The project panel contains files from the file system of the assets folder in the project's root folder. It shows all the available scripts, textures, materials and shaders available for use in the project. The hierarchy panel shows the current scene structure, with its GameObjects and its children. It also helps users organize them by name and order relative to the GameObject's siblings. Order dependent features, such as UI, make use of this categorization. The panel responsible for referencing content in the build process is the hierarchy panel. The panel contains references to the objects that exist, or will exist, when the application is executed. When building the project, Unity searches for them in the project panel, and adds them to the bundle. 23. Why Time.deltaTime should be used to make things that depend on time operate correctly? Real time applications, such as games, have a variable FPS. They sometimes run at 60FPS, or when suffering slowdowns, they will run on 40FPS or less. If you want to change a value from A to B in 1.0 seconds you can't simply increase A by B-A between two frames because frames can run fast or slow, so one frame can have different durations. The way to correct this is to measure the time taken from frame X to X+1 and increment A, leveraging this change with the frame duration deltaTime by doing A += (B-A) * DeltaTime. When the accumulated DeltaTime reaches 1.0 second, A will have assumed B value. 24. Which of the following examples will run faster? 1000 GameObjects, each with a MonoBehaviour implementing the Update callback. One GameObject with one MonoBehaviour with an Array of 1000 classes, each implementing a custom Update() callback? The correct answer is 2. The Update callback is called using a C# Reflection, which is significantly slower than calling a function directly. In our example, 1000 GameObjects each with a MonoBehaviour means 1000 Reflection calls per frame. Creating one MonoBehaviour with one Update, and using this single callback to Update a given number of elements, is a lot faster, due to the direct access to the method. 25. Arrange the event functions listed below in the order in which they will be invoked when an application is closed: Update() OnGUI() Awake() OnDisable() Start() LateUpdate() OnEnable() OnApplicationQuit() OnDestroy() The correct execution order of these event functions when an application closes is as follows: Awake() OnEnable() Start() Update() LateUpdate() OnGUI() OnApplicationQuit() OnDisable() OnDestroy() Note: You might be tempted to disagree with the placement of OnApplicationQuit() in the above list, but it is correct which can be verified by logging the order in which call occurs when your application closes. 26. It might be grease board work, it might be a conversation, it might be a level design test, it might even be a code test at a PC. The premise is that the interviewer wants to see how you work. Often, once you've answered the question, the interviewer will change the parameters to see what you'll do. But what do you do if you have no clue what's being asked, or if it's outside your area of expertise---> That's a panic moment if there ever was one. Take a deep breath and realize that this is a moment where you need to say, "I'm not sure I understand the question," or "That's not something I've done before." But immediately after that, start asking questions about the problem and take a stab at solving it. That's one of the biggest things you can do at this point -- admit ignorance then have a go anyway. Showing a willingness to try something outside your field of knowledge is huge to interviewers. It shows you want to learn and be more than what you are now. Taking an existing idea and adding, "but I'd make it cooler!" isn't the answer (the number of times I've heard Q/A staff wanting to become developers tell me they want to remake Counter Strike "but better" is staggering); it just shows you have enthusiasm, but no original ideas. Bonus points if you can take an existing IP license and make a compelling argument for a game out of it. People who can actually do that are at a premium in our industry since most tie-ins, well, suck. 34. What games are you playing? If you plan to work for a video game company, you'd better be playing games -- and you'd better be able to demonstrate that. It's good form to mention some games that are in the same genre as the games made at that company. It's even better if you mention playing some of the games that were actually made there. Again though, don't go over the top. At the very least, play the demo of anything they've produced. You need to be knowledgeable about the genre, what you enjoy about it, and how the development of these games is affected by the genre (as much as you can be). So research the company before the interview. How you answer this question can be a deal breaker or a deal maker for hiring managers. They want to hire people who are demonstrably passionate about the games their company makes. Saying, "I have a level 70 mage in World of Warcraft and a level 40 druid in EverQuest," to Blizzard makes the point that you are immersed in its product genre. Demonstrating some knowledge about older games also shows you're grounded in game history, which is never a bad thing. The wider your knowledge base, the more you can forestall going down blind alleys in terms of implementation and design, which benefits everyone, and that's exactly what a company is looking for in its employees. 35. All Of My TikTok Followers Are Fake
The followers poured in. Then the likes. Then tens of thousands of people watched my TikTok video. The clip itself was of a few Motherboard staffers winning a match in the hugely popular game Call of Duty: Warzone; TikTok is full of streamers and players uploading their wins or soul-crushing loses.
The video itself isn't good—there's no slick editing, no captivating TikTok personality talking to camera, and certainly no dancing—but in a few short hours the video accumulated 25,000 views and over 1,000 likes. This is very little engagement compared to the most popular videos on TikTok, but it's not bad for my first ever clip uploaded to the platform. The video climbed through the rankings of one of the Warzone-related hashtags people use to share their games.
But most of that engagement was fake. I bought the TikTok followers, likes, and views from a website that offers them all for sale. For around $50 in total I had artificially inflated the popularity of my TikTok clip, and, although my video certainly isn't about to go viral, potentially increased the chance for unsuspecting TikTok users to see it themselves.
The news comes amid increased attention on TikTok, including not-yet-publicly verified claims from the Trump administration that the app poses a national security risk. Last week President Trump signed an executive order that would ban TikTok from the United States if the company isn't bought by an American company. TikTok plans to sue in response as early as this week, NPR reported. Microsoft is in talks to purchase TikTok.
Buying followers, likes, and other engagement on TikTok highlights the grey market for social media amplification; an issue that is common across social networks writ large. The engagement we paid for didn't make the video or account viral, and we don't know if a TikTok video can go viral with inauthentic engagement alone; we only bought a relatively small amount of engagement., But paying for engagement on TikTok is easy and cheap. Nine days after paying for followers, the account and video are still up, seemingly undetected by Tiktok.
"Paid likes, follows and shares on any platform are basically a numbers game. They can make a post look more popular than it otherwise would, and that can give it an air of credibility," Ben Nimmo, director of investigations at disinformation-focused security firm Graphika, told Motherboard in an email.

With TikTok, users create an account, perhaps search for some topics they're interested in, and are then presented with an essentially endless stream of short clips to watch. Once users interact with this content, perhaps by watching clips to their completion, liking videos, leaving comments, or sharing them with others, TikTok quickly and effectively figures out what other videos to recommend. These then present themselves in the "For You" stream. TikTok differs from many other social networks in that it doesn't run on a so-called social graph which recommends content to users based on who they follow, and instead on a content graph, which looks at other indicators such as how long people watched videos or otherwise engaged with them.
To see how simple it is to buy various pieces of TikTok engagement, last week I uploaded my Warzone clip to TikTok, and then bought 250 followers from the website advertising the service. After specifying how many followers I wanted, providing my account name, and adding the item to my cart, I paid just over $12 via PayPal. The site also takes Paytr, Stripe, and other payment processors too for a cheaper price.
The results weren't subtle. I got 250 new followers seconds after making a payment. The followers I bought were a wide mix of accounts purporting to be women, men, and many users with profile pictures of things like animals or even in one case a computer graphics card. Some have obviously generated usernames such as "user2299926539189," others have full names like "Pauline Chavez."
"Looking at some of the accounts you sent over, they don't seem to be terribly high quality, but also not super low quality for fake accounts," Zarine Kharazian, assistant editor at the Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab), which researches online misinformation, told Motherboard in an email after reviewing some of the purchased followers. "High quality would be something like previous users' compromised accounts with full posting histories, while low quality would be no customization at all."
These accounts sit somewhere in the middle, with profile pictures, and some also had bios and their own video uploads. One clip was a typical cat video you may see go viral (although the video appears to have been ripped from a cat-focused TikTok account that shared the same video a month earlier). Another set of at least three accounts all had generic stock art of female models as their profile photos. These accounts had each uploaded a video of showing a screen of Google Image search results of the same models. All of the videos showed a web browser with the same language bookmarks, suggesting the videos posted by multiple accounts we paid to follow us were created by the same person.
Many of these fake followers I paid for followed the same TikTok accounts. One user who is followed by many of the accounts I paid to follow me was a young female TikToker with 2.2 million followers. Another account followed by many of the fake followers belonged to a talent scout from the UK. It is not clear if the suspicious accounts followed these users in an attempt to present their own accounts as genuine TikTok users, or whether the account owners also purchased followers or likes. Several TikTok creators followed by the suspicious accounts did not respond to multiple requests for comment; one person who replied on behalf of the young female TikToker said the user had just turned 13 and so did not have the ability to buy anything. Many of the fake followers also like videos from many of the same accounts.
A customer support representative for the website Motherboard used to purchase the TikTok engagement declined to answer questions on how the service manages to fulfill orders, be that using hacked accounts, making their own, and whether they use any sort of automation to like videos or follow accounts.
"Sorry i am only able to answer questions about our customers' orders. Thank you for understanding and have a good day," the person replied in an email. Notably, their response also included the date and time in Turkish.
DFRLab previously found multiple apps that promised TikTok engagement in exchange for high level access to users' phones, including contacts.
Over the next few days, I also bought 1,000 likes and 25,000 views for my video, which arrived within minutes. To test whether these purchases had any tangible impact on the video's visibility, another Motherboard staffer scrolled through a Warzone-related hashtag and successfully found the video. Generally, TikTok videos that appear near the top of the hashtag have more likes than videos that appear further down. Motherboard found our test clip among other videos that also had around 1,000 likes (some of the top videos in the hashtag have around 500,000 likes). TikTok told Motherboard that videos under a hashtag are not sorted solely based on likes, but a combination of other forms of engagement, such as views, and relevance too.
It is difficult to tell whether any of this inauthentic engagement led to TikTok users viewing the video in their "For You" feed. The video did receive over 1,100 views after Motherboard stopped purchasing for inauthentic engagement, but it is unclear where exactly those views came from, via "For You," browsing the Warzone-related hashtag, or another way.
"Buying engagement on TikTok could definitely amplify content, although it's hard to say exactly how without knowing more of the specifics of TikTok's recommendation algorithm," Kharazian from DFRLab added.
Nimmo added, "If a tweet or post has 1,000 likes or shares, it's going to look more instinctively impressive than a post with zero. In the same way, an account with 100,000 followers will appear more popular than an account with ten. But that's largely a cosmetic effect: it can make a post or user look popular, but it can't actually make them popular."
"If fake accounts can be used to make a post trend and thus bump it up the algorithm, that might attract the attention of real users, if they're searching for the trending topic. At that point, it's a question of using fake accounts to fool the trending algorithm, rather than fooling human users," Nimmo said.
Inauthentic activity is certainly not limited to just TikTok. Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and other social networks have all shifted more focus on detecting and trying to remove inauthentic accounts, especially in the last few years. Some campaigns have involved PR agencies peddling lies on behalf of clients; governments pushing out divisive messaging, or political spin doctors doing much of the same.
"Can I be TikTok famous yet."
In a blog post published at the end of July, TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer wrote, "we believe all companies should disclose their algorithms, moderation policies, and data flows to regulators. We will not wait for regulation to come, but instead TikTok has taken the first step by launching a Transparency and Accountability Center for moderation and data practices. Experts can observe our moderation policies in real-time, as well as examine the actual code that drives our algorithms." On its website, TikTok says "Due to constraints as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the physical opening of our Transparency and Accountability Center has been delayed. We look forward to being able to welcome guests in the near future in Los Angeles and at our upcoming Transparency and Accountability Center in Washington D.C."
"TikTok is committed to protecting the safety, integrity and authenticity of our community," a TikTok spokesperson told Motherboard in an emailed statement. "We use a combination of technology-driven security controls and human review to mitigate spam and fraud on our platform, including purchasing followers or likes, which is a violation of our Community Guidelines, and we take swift action against accounts that break our terms of service. Understanding that spam and fraud are evolving industry-wide threats, TikTok will continue investing in solutions to strengthen our security infrastructure and stay ahead of these challenges."
In the days after purchasing the 1,000 likes, TikTok appears to have suspended some of the accounts. 
"This account was banned due to multiple Community Guidelines violations," a banner on top of the impacted accounts now reads. Most of the accounts appear to be still active however, and the video itself still displays a like counter of over 1,000.
The video of another user who had many of the suspicious accounts following them says, "Can I be TikTok famous yet."

The coronavirus has hastened the post-human era – TechCrunch

In the mid-1970s, Professor Fereidoun M. Esfandiary decided to change his name. From then on he would be legally called “FM-2030.”
“Conventional names define a person’s past: ancestry, ethnicity, nationality, religion. I am not who I was ten years ago … The name 2030 reflects my conviction that the years around 2030 will be a magical time. In 2030 we will be ageless and everyone will have an excellent chance to live forever. 2030 is a dream and a goal,” he offered in explanation.
It didn’t hurt that by 2030 he would be 100 years old, an age he was sure he would reach.
Already in his forty-odd years of living, FM — which some speculated stood for “Future Man” — defied easy categorization. The son of an Iranian diplomat, he’d lived in 17 countries by the age of 11 and would go on to represent his country’s basketball team at the 1948 Olympic Games before beginning an academic career. He was educated at Berkeley and UCLA, later becoming one of the first professors of futurology at the New School. It was there that he would begin to espouse his “new concepts of the human,” discussing the steps necessary to transition to the age of post-humanity. FM described this as an epoch in which Homo sapiens became “post-biological organisms,” transcending the limits of their body through technology.

Much of the 21st century has seen us hurtle toward a post-human future, fulfilling predictions FM made half a century earlier. Over the course of his career, he foresaw the creation of 3D printers — which he referred to as “Santa Claus machines” — along with the advent of telemedicine, teleconferencing, teleshopping and genetic editing.
Though that suggests the process of post-humanization is well under way, we may look back on 2020 and the coronavirus crisis as a crossing over. A time in which our relationship to core aspects of our humanity is fundamentally remade. In particular, I believe we are seeing meaningful recalibrations of our relationship to identity, labor, health and love. In short, the post-human era is beginning in earnest.
Identity
The shift to a locked-in world has accelerated the acceptance of identity as distinct from physical body or place. We still want to communicate, socialize and play during this time, but have only a digital version to offer. Those constraints are forcing new expressions of selfhood, from the Zoom background used to express a personal interest or make a joke, to the avatars roaming rich, interactive metaverses. Nintendo has seen millions turn to Animal Crossing to socialize, trade virtual assets and host both weddings and conferences, while Travis Scott’s surreal performance inside of Fortnite attracted 12.3 million concurrent views, and 27.7 million unique attendees. We are showcasing even the darker aspects of our nature via these platforms, with some on Animal Crossing bullying and torturing villagers they deem “ugly.”
Tools like Pragli illustrate how this development manifests in the workplace beyond Zoom backgrounds ripped from “Tiger King” or “Love Is Blind.” Rather than hopping onto a video call with co-workers, Pragli offers the ability to connect with anime-style avatars of your officemates. Changing one’s appearance on the platform is determined by the options the company rolls out, with a recent update showcasing the ability for men to sport a bun, braid or ponytail. Set “happy” or “sad” expressions blur the lines between real and performative feelings.
All of this is in stark contrast to the masked, distant, de-individuated person we show outside our homes, something a little less than human. There are indications that this redacted version of ourselves is becoming something of a style. G95’s “biohoodie” features a built-in face-cover, while creative studio Production Club showed off a hazmat suit designed for socializing. Even once the worst is over, we may see a new cautiousness and implied distance expressed in fashion.
Labor
“Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it,” said Stephen Hawking. Whether that is an assessment you agree with, much of our conception of ourselves is tied up in our labor. COVID-19 is accelerating a shift away from humans and toward machines, doing so at a time in which we may actually feel grateful for cyborg usurpers as they keep critical services running and spare us from disease. Neolix, a Chinese manufacturer of driverless vans, has seen a spike in demand since the outbreak and has been trusted to ferry food and medical supplies, and to disinfect streets. Suppliers like AMP, UVD, Nuro and Starship have experienced a similar surge, while the order books of industrial behemoths like Harmonic Drive and Fanuc suggest more universal demand. The latter saw orders increase 7% between Q4 and March.
This insinuation is not limited to manual labor. With customer support and moderation offices closing down, many companies are aggressively employing AI solutions. Facebook and Google have expanded automated moderation, while PayPal used chatbots for 65% of customer inquiries in recent weeks, a record for the firm.
Those lucky enough to retain their jobs may face a very different work environment in which they are forced to collaborate with robots and be treated as an increasingly mechanized system themselves. Walmart greeters will stand side-by-side with automated floor-scrubbers, and McDonald’s cooks may soon be joined by a kitchen full of bionic sous-chefs. Amazon warehouse workers — old-hands at human-robot collaboration thanks to the company’s acquisition of Kiva Systems — must adapt to being managed more like their pallet-ferrying co-workers, with temperatures monitored by thermal cameras. That is just a small part of the broader surveillance blitz being undertaken around the world and across industries. China is installing more cameras to monitor the comings-and-goings of citizens, while companies dip into budgets to purchase “tattleware,” software designed to surveil employees. Among the beneficiaries are companies like InterGuard, which provide minute-by-minute breakdowns of how workers spend time online. Sneek takes photos of workers as often as once a minute. The company’s CEO joked that the “sneeksnap” command came in particularly handy when a colleague did something embarrassing like picking their nose.
Health
Much of our waking life is filled with health-related ruminations. As we become more aware of our vulnerabilities, we are turning to technologies to extend corporeal limitations, treating our bodies more like software with which we can experiment. Consumers are turning to immunity-boosting supplements such as Vitamin C and zinc, which have soared in sales, in addition to courting riskier treatments like “rectal ozone insufflations,” peddled by influencers. Spurred on by world-leaders like Trump and Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, demand for hydroxychloroquine has grown rapidly, with prescriptions increasing ~500%.
Whatever your opinion of the president or the treatment in question, this represents a rapid, iterative model of medicine more akin to the Silicon Valley mantra of “move fast and break things” than a considered FDA approval process. Biohacking communities, a group with high-tolerance for health-related risks, are teaming up online to research COVID-19 vaccines on their own time. “Biohacking used to be a fringe space, but I think this is becoming a kind of breakout moment for things like DIY biology and community labs and hackerspaces,” one contributor noted.
Beyond immediate experimentation, we are looking to extend the limits of our bodies in order to accommodate changing plans for the future. Reports suggest that men have turned to at-home sperm collection companies like Legacy during quarantine, motivated by fears of diminished fertility and perhaps the acknowledgment that with life on hold, children may have to wait. That certainly seems to be the case for 1,894 women surveyed by Modern Fertility and SoFi: 31% noted that the pandemic had affected their fertility plans, while 41% stated they are delaying childbearing because of the coronavirus.

“The trouble is not that I am single and likely to stay single,” novelist Charlotte Brontë once wrote, “but that I am lonely and likely to stay lonely.”
The current state of affairs does not offer many ways to amend that state of misery, prompting some to turn to AI companions. Created in 2015, Replika provides a sympathetic texting partner, designed to serve as a digital therapist. But for many of the company’s 500K monthly active users, Replika is too charming to resist: up to 40% consider the bot a romantic partner. The coronavirus may serve as the ideal catalyst for relationships between humans and artificial personalities to deepen. There are signs we may already prefer their company: research on Microsoft’s XiaoIce indicated that conversations with the chatbot last longer than human-to-human interactions.
For those committed to finding love among creatures of blood and bone, the pandemic has forced a recalibration of what it means to date. Interactions take place almost entirely online, through chat or video calls, changing the necessary criteria for a match. Location matters much less now than availability and responsiveness. When the desire for touch, or “skin hunger” as it is gruesomely called, becomes too much to bear, interested parties must navigate a meeting. In the process, we treat partners as potential threats, owners of a corpus that may endanger us, despite best intentions. In doing so, we view the individual as distinct from their body, a separate being in possession of a liability with which we must negotiate. Depending on the length of the pandemic, we may see this fear harden into an unconscious aversion, reviving the disgust for the corporeal felt by more puritanical eras. These mores may take time to correct.
The self, as we know it, is being decimated. That may not be a bad thing. As identity moves online, as work is stripped from us, as our physical bodies are optimized like an OS, as love sheds its carnality, new opportunities will emerge. Humans will find meaning in new modes of self-expression, discover purpose beyond work (or reclassify what work means), reengineer physical limits as “biology eats the world” and find affection in new beings. We are undergoing a period of Schumpeterian “creative destruction,” felt at the anthropological rather than industrial level. Great things may come of it.
For FM-2030, the future was something at which to marvel, where “people will belong to no specific families or factions … we will free-flow across the planet and beyond. Highly individual yet universal.” Though the changes wrought by the coronavirus appear bleak, some of FM’s vision feels true: We are united as a world, fighting against a common enemy, more connected than ever before. Perhaps, in time, the rest of FM’s dream will be made manifest.
For all of his prescience, however, FM-2030 got one prediction very wrong. He did not make his 100th birthday, dying of pancreatic cancer in 2000. He was just 69. If he has his way though, he may still have a role to play in the creation of the future. Though dead, FM’s body remains frozen in a state of cryonic suspension in Scottsdale, Ariz. Perhaps he is waiting for the world to catch up.
