Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."
Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.
These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!
Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!
Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.
So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.

idk how much stock i put into those "gen z is more conservative than past generations" think-pieces from a few years back. but it's very possible for a person: to believe that climate change is a problem, to support (or be part of) the LGBT community, to believe in universal healthcare and social services, to support religious tolerance, to fight for expanded housing and labor rights, etc etc etc, and still, like, unabashedly hate women on a level you wouldn't believe existed

It bums me out that they remade Mean Girls, not because I'm philosophically opposed to remakes or even remakes of icons from my own youth, but because we had one high school black comedy about popular girls per decade for a while there but then it dried up and I want it back. And also I want to see what an all-original 2020s high school black comedy about popular girls would look like.

cross-generational friendships have been so important and formative and crucial to my adulthood. and i'm not talking about "oh I'm in my 20s and nearly all my friends are in their 30s ha ha ha" [true], I'm talking about "I labored side-by-side with people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s and became friends with them."
one such friend and I went to a funeral today to support a third friend and it really reaffirmed how important these relationships have been to me and how good they are for keeping perspective and taking advice from people with more experience than you.
tomorrow I'm going on a walk and then getting lunch with an old boss-turned-friend/mentor who's old enough to be my mother (like, literally her oldest son is my age) and I'm looking forward to it so much. having friends who you can bond with but also learn life lessons from is such a gift and it makes me lament my current work situation (everyone on my team is within a 3-year age range).

i'm begging people online to talk to actual 20ish year olds and not make assumptions based on your tiktok user niece that you see once a year at family gatherings and crap.
We are not children. we are adults in college and grad school and shit (median age in my MA is about 23) and most of us in fact know how to use laptops, word processors, folders and basic software........... Almost every entry level office job (which we are holding down and applying to to be able to afford grad school!!!!!!!) requires microsoft office skills (excel etc) so it's laughable to make claims like this with zero non-anecdotal evidence
This keeps happening in posts about gen z doing this and that and I'm fucking tired!!!! I stg being born in 1994 doesnt make you smarter or more tech literate than younger generations it just makes you (at least some ppl) smug and annoying apparently!!!!!!!!

I find it interesting that Rose, Donna, Amy, and Clara are always mentioned and loved, but it's very rare to see someone say that Bill or Martha was their favorite companion...
Just an observation.

When the book comes out I'll be taking Alecto (my old barbies) out of the tomb (big plastic box) where I kept her for the last myriad (since I was 10) because I too refuse to let go (i will never give these away).

So, Seinfeld is trending and I'm currently watching it, and I have to say it aged pretty well
Obviously, there are episodes that seem kind of absurd because the whole drama would be over in a minute if they had ✨smartphones✨ but that's to be expected
But there was no *how on earth did they think this was appropriate to say??? this couldn't air today* like I felt sometimes watching clips from other older sitcoms (ummm Friends)
The characters are imperfect, and say inappropriate things, and are made fun of.
Continuity? They did not know her.

Inspired by this tweet from WolfeyGlick. Here's a chart on potential Legends: Z-A starters, with starters eliminated for various reasons. Color key also shows just how likely I feel these would be take into account by Nintendo and how much I feel my guess is accurate.
So the dark red "used as previous starters" are (in my mind) almost definitely going to be ruled out, while the yellow "newest gen" are still on the edge.
Since this is a hard chart to describe for screen readers, written out version below the readmore
Ruled out for being the starters in the last Legends game: Rowlet, Cyndaquil, Oshawott
Ruled out for having a pre-existing mega, when the new Z-A will likely want them to have new forms: Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip
Ruled out for being starters from X and Y: Chespin, Fennkin, Froakie
Ruled out for being starters from the most recent gen: Sprigatito, Fuecoco, Quaxly
That leaves four starters for each type for Z-A.
Remaining grass starter options: Chikorita, Turtwig, Snivy, and Grookey
Remaining fire starter options: Chimchar, Tepig, Litten, and Scorbunny
Remaining water starter options: Totodile, Piplup, Popplio, and Sobble

I've been discussing this recently with people older than me, and I've always considered myself as a person who got to experience, albeit fleetingly, the XX century. Some say that being born in the 90s means you basically only experienced 1/10 or less of the XX century, so you can be lumped with 2000s kid as honorary member lol. Some say early 90s are the last conceivable birth years to call yourself a 90s/XX century child. So, what's the opinion on this here on tumblr? Who can be realistically called a XX century kid? (edit: to better explain, who can be said to have experienced fully or at least pretty satisfactorily the XXth? People who turned 20 in the 90s? People who hit 30s in the 90s?) Reblog for larger sample size!
