Finished up this cover art piece for my upcoming Bees Band AU fic - When the Stars Sing for Us! Super happy with how this came out, definitely one of my biggest digital pieces I'd say!

Writing is underway - I'm going to try and knock out the first three chapters before I upload anything, so you lovely folks can really sink your teeth in! I’ve been thinking about a Bumbleby band AU where Yang is the drummer for Jaune, Ren, and Oscar’s straight-boy emo band (Joyriders)

And Blake and Ilia are trying to get their leftist punk group (Menagerie) off the ground but Sun is their drummer and just wants to have fun and goof off instead of caring about politics

The two bands wind up touring together (maybe they’re both opening for a more successful group) and there’s a lot of tension at first but eventually they all hit it off and become good friends

Of course there’s slow-burn Bumbleby romance happening the whole time, and eventually Blake and Yang start dating

At the end both Joyriders and Menagerie realize their drummer would be happier in the other band, and they agree to trade

If school wasn’t kicking my ass right now I might honestly have to write this

okok idk if you read/write fics but i am reaching out to the bumbleby blogs i know of to try and find this fic i read and then lost. i've checked my history and everything i can think of including just filtering and searching through ao3 but i can't find it :( usually if i lost a fic i wouldn't really care but there is this metal fucking quote in this one that i can't fully remember and it has been tormenting me not knowing it. basic premise of the fic: i think yang is a movie star or some kind of celebrity and blake is in a band and is super popular and has weiss as their manager, she has trauma from adam still but had been out and away for a while and she meets yang bc she requested to meet the band because she was a fan and they hit it off etc etc anyways the story keeps going and blake starts writing lyrics for new songs and in one of them she is just roasting the fuck out of adam about how yang fucks better than him and i fucking died reading it. plot progresses and blake leaves yang in some kind of self sabotage "its for your own good" kind of thing and goes on tour and yang follows her. its a really sweet fic and i hope someone might know it???

🤔 to be honest, I kinda steer clear from Band AUs. Just not my thing. I have heard of some but none of them really match this description.

RWBY Fanfic Recommendation List

Fics that have really struck me, vaguely organized by ship and/or topic.

Bumbleby (Blake x Yang)

first off, basically anything by pugoata. She's the goddess-empress of the Bees. I'm gonna give particular props to Banshee, as it was the first longer fic and AU that I read, and it really opened up my mind to what fanfic could be.

You're a Mountain, Full of Glory - a ski/snowboard with amazing characterization and a closing scene that will live rent-free in my head forever, in a good way.

They Can't Steal the Love You're Born to Find - childhood soulmates repeatedly torn apart and reconnecting, with courtroom drama. One of the most angst-ridden Bee fics I've ever read.

Fucking In Love - pornstar AU that gets right to the sex and slow burns the romance. Hot as hell while also full of tenderness and pining.

Midnight Menagerie - exotic dancer, kinda-cyberpunk dystopia AU. Edges you forever with the sex, earns all the angst tags, and we are majorly trusting @kaelidascope when she promises an amazing happy ending.

Bite Me Like You Love Me - one of the hottest Bee smutfics I've ever read.

You and Me - Blake discovers she's pregnant the day Yang goes MIA on a mission and struggles through being a single mother teaching their child about her amazing other mom. Short, happy ending, amazingly sweet.

WhiteRose (Ruby x Weiss)

The Foxtrot - Ruby and Weiss repair their broken lives after the war. It's one of the most popular RWBY fics of all time for a reason.

Can You See My Strings?/Deja Vu - premium mentally ill Weiss escapes from child abuse angst, with a happy ending if you read the sequel.

But Your Voice Used to Be Mine - Weiss escapes abuse to join RBY's punk band whose smash hit she inspired.

Just One Cigarette - Ruby and Weiss have a little meetup roleplay and it's really good.

Faunus Weiss (generally major themes of struggling with internal and external racism)

Craving the Sky - Weiss has painfully concealed her faunus heritage while she tries to earn her father's love. The support of her team, and the love of Blake and Yang (BeesSchnees) help her soar on her own.

Black Swan Theory - faunus Weiss struggles to recover from child abuse and navigate a deeply racist society while building a relationship with Pyrrha (Schneekos).

Clipped Wings - secret faunus Weiss, dealing with racism and abuse from Jacques, this time slow burning towards Pollination.

Villainesses

Melting Glace - Cinder and Neo find love, and no redemption, in the trauma of failing to destroy Beacon. Will make you cheer for them to win by the end.

Rise from the Ashes - Cinder has a Vader moment and saves Ruby from Salem, and Ruby's pure heart helps her heal, and their adversarial relationship turn to affection. Peak RWBY enemies-to-lovers.

Odds & Ends

The Bermuda Triangle - great modern AU BeesSchnees that gets filthy hot at the end.

Midnight Rose - Summer rescues and adopts Cinder out of Atlas. Their relationship, and Cinder coming to love the Xiao Long-Rose family, is beautifully depicted. Still very much ongoing (no ships as of yet).

Fallen Maiden - Jaune dies protecting Pyrrha at Beacon, and the Fall Maiden power remains split. Will Pyrrha's bloody crusade of vengeance consume her? Or, 'Pyrrha goes full Magneto and fucks Cinder up'.

What's In A Name? - Winter and May grow up together, struggling to cope with their feelings for each other against the background of the Atlas aristocracy.

Linked In Life and Love - I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this one. I really, really love the first act, where Team RWBY sees Blake suffering terribly through a surprise heat cycle and decides that they will all "help" her with it. It's sweet and tender and feels legit for them. I'm not a huge fan of where all the series has gone since, but I would invite anyone to judge that for themselves.

(As I see this getting a decent amount of traffic, I'll just point out that, if it's convinced you [correctly] of my impeccable taste in fanfic, you might want to check out my own RWBY writings)

And yes! Bumbleby is the fic’s main focus, but there are several other ships that are going to play out over the course of the fic. The two main side ships I have planned are Sea Monkeys (Sun x Neptune) and Schneekos (Pyrrha x Weiss), though their overall plot-influence as ships will be limited.

Summary:

Yang had this all planned out, talked about it with Weiss for hours, so why is she so nervous? Why is she pacing the length of their room while Blake makes dinner?

The small box is heavy in her pocket, nails drumming against it as her mind considers the possibilities.

Worst case scenario, Blake says no, which probably won't happen. Weiss and Ruby were constantly groaning about how gross and in love they are.

She sighs, pulling the small velvet box out, flipping it open. The thing is, Blake's not one for extravagant jewelry, but Yang wanted to give her something from her hoard. Unfortunately most rings she had were set with multiple large gems, engraved bands that would twist in interesting ways.

It had taken her ages to find something simple, a golden band. It was perfect for Blake, obviously, but still the thought of rejection creeped in the back of her mind.

im putting these two questions together as one answer bc they're interconnected in that way -- so largely with writing, music very much inspires me. i'll hear a song and a scene will pop into my head, or a general idea of a story, bc i gravitate towards music that tells a story or has compelling lyrics, or has great atmosphere. the band, Starset, is a very inspiring band for me for those reasons, bc the atmosphere is so expansive and there are so many emotional moments that i find i can craft stories around

so by that same token, one of the songs that inspires me the most (i cant say THE one song, bc i'll have different songs that inspire me for different fics) is "Disappear" by Starset.

but again, so many songs inspire me for different reasons. i have this one catmeleon au that has me gravitating towards "City of the Dead" by Eurielle. one of the scenes in my bumbleby massage au (man i miss that fic SDKFHSKGHSF) was written while listening to "Silhouette" by Aquilo on repeat. "Hold Me Now" by RED was the inspiration for the title for one of my chenrich fics.

so yeah many songs inspire me, and music inspires me a lot while writing. honestly the whole reason my one chenrich wip ("disappear" aka, the one where i had alex succumb to her wounds from her fall) even exists at all is bc of "Disappear" by starset and this ONE piece of gorgeous chenrich art that i happened to see at just the right moment, when i was listening to that song.

so. tl;dr is music and a variety of songs inspire me skghdkhg
