What does lacan show us? He shows us that desire is not a biological function; that it is not correlated with a natural object; and that its object is fantasized. Because of this, desire is extravagant. It cannot be grasped by those who might try to master it. It plays tricks on them. Yet if it is not recognized, it produces symptoms. In psychoanalysis, the goal is to interpret, that is, to read the message regarding desire that is harbored within the symptom. Although desire upsets us, it also inspires us to invent artifices that can serve us as a compass. An animal species has a single natural compass. Human beings, on the other hand, have multiple compasses: signifying montages and discourses. They tell you what to do: how to think, how to enjoy, and how to reproduce. Yet each person's fantasy remains irreducible to shared ideals.

"I could label what I am saying in my seminar this year as providing you with your edupation , provided we emphasize the fact that it is those who [do not allow themselves to be] dupes of the unconscious who go astray." — Jacques Lacan

The verb Lacan uses here, supporter, recurs constantly in this seminar (and elsewhere in his work as well) and requires a word of explanation. In ordinary French, it most commonly means to bear, stand, or put up with, and is primarily used negatively (e.g., Je ne le supporte pas, "I can't stand him"). Even in the present context in the text, this possible sense cannot be entirely ruled out: while psychoan- alytic discourse is "behind" Lacan, supporting, backing, bolstering, underpinning, sustaining, carrying, or corroborating what he says, it could also be understood as "putting up with" Lacan. While supporter has often been translated as "to prop up" or "propping," I have generally preferred to employ locutions using the verb "to base" and the noun "basis."

Prince and the Revolution

If Springsteen can make it in with his backing band, surely the Revolution's presence can get the Purple One a spot. While Prince is obviously the standout in both musical skill and physical attractiveness, there's no way he'd let anyone unskilled or ugly into his band. They have also reunited and performed without him on several occasions.

. I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well to tell you the truth in all this excitement I kinda lost track myself. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?"

Whereas we see an utter and complete absence of the law in psychosis, and a definitive instatement of the law in neurosis (overcome only in fantasy), in perversion the subject struggles to bring the law into being- in a word, to make the Other exist. -Bruce Fink

Fantastic Fungi (2019) Myths & Monsters, “The Wild Unknown” (2017) “Adam and Eve with the Tree of Knowledge as Death” (1587)
“For centuries, knowledge has been pursued as a defense against truth.”
— Jacques Lacan, Seminar XIII (1966)
“We inherit from Greek philosophy the belief that knowledge is liberating, but the biblical myth of the Fall is closer to the truth.” — Heresies (2004) “[Lev] Shestov came to faith by way of radical doubt.  But sceptical doubt, however radical, cannot bring the unlimited freedom Shestov demanded.  What he wanted was to return to things as they were before the Fall, when all things seemed possible.  But the Fall is the price of consciousness. There is no way back.” — Seven Types of Atheism (2018)
— John N. Gray
“God is not free to enact the law that renders Adam and Eve free.  God’s name carries with it the prohibition, which is why it is impossible to envision a Garden of Eden with God and without prohibition.  But the necessity of law disrupting the image of paradise is not a fact to be lamented. Genuine freedom is not compatible with a Garden of Eden lacking the prohibited tree.  We can imagine the harmony of the prelapsarian world where there would be no negation, but we cannot even sustain this image.  The moment we imagine how life would transpire in this world, we introduce negation.  The prohibition simply makes us aware of the power of the negative and the freedom that it grants us.  The prohibition opens up freedom because it introduces “no” into the signifying structure. […] The difficulty of confronting the nonsense of the prohibition in modernity is that a basic premise of modernity involves the rejection of non-sensical imperatives.  Modernity craves sense.  To modern ears, the primordial signifier sounds like a holdover from traditional society that has no place in the modern universe.  But modernity cannot, any more than traditional society, do without its point of nonsense.”
— Todd McGowan, “The psychosis of freedom: Law in modernity” in Lacan on Psychosis (2018)
“A perverse subject desires to see any lack in the Other as one which can be filled. … Sade negates God, who is a metonymy for the limits of the Other of knowledge, by way of disavowal.  André referred to Annie Le Brun’s book, Sade: A Sudden Abyss (1990), in his discussion of the function of Sade’s negation of God.  Andre concluded that Sade’s “proliferation of blasphemy” functions to fill the “gaping hole that God, as signifier, leaves in reason.”  From this conclusion it is apparent that Sade’s words of blasphemy function as a fetish to plug the lack in the Other.”
— Stephanie S. Swales, Perversion: A Lacanian Psychoanalytic Approach to the Subject (2012)
“In the master’s discourse, knowledge is prized only insofar as it can produce something else, only so long as it can be put to work for the master; yet knowledge itself remains inaccessible to the master.  In the university discourse, knowledge is not so much an end in itself as that which justifies the academic’s very existence and activity.”
— Bruce Fink, The Lacanian Subject (1995)
“[A]ny decline in the force of institutions makes people vulnerable to information chaos.  To say that life is destabilized by weakened institutions is merely to say that information loses its use and therefore becomes a source of confusion rather than coherence.” — Technopoly (1992) “Knowledge ..is only organized information.  It is self-contained, confined to a single system of information about the world.  One can have a great deal of knowledge about the world but entirely lack wisdom.  That is frequently the case with scientists, politicians, entrepreneurs, academics, even theologians.” — Building a Bridge to the 18th Century (1999)
— Neil Postman

I'm mostly a Jungian[*] these days, but still:
We must keep in mind that jouissance is prohibited [interdite] to whoever speaks, as such—or, put differently, it can only be said [dite] between the lines by whoever is a subject of the Law, since the Law is founded on that very prohibition. Indeed, were the Law to give the order, "Jouis!" ["Enjoy!" or "Come!"], the subject could only reply "J'ouïs" ["I hear"], in which the jouissance would no longer be anything but understood [sous-entendue].
—Lacan, "The Subversion of the Subject and the Dialectic of Desire in the Freudian Unconscious" (trans. Bruce Fink)
[*] I'm reading Lacan because an old friend from graduate school asked me to, motivated at least in part, I believe, by the same few reservations about my possibly indiscriminate intellectual tastes that Blake Smith expressed in his recent and unspeakably generous tribute to me. I am almost living out this sentence from Love's Work by Gillian Rose—
She is convinced of her originality and dismissed Jim's urgings that she read Lacan, to temper the archetypal patterns of Sexual Personae.
—except that I am less imperious than La Paglia and am at least willing to struggle to understand our surrealo-therapist. I would remind the devotees of French Theory, however, that no less than Deleuze and Guattari pronounced Jung more profound than Freud. Even I wouldn't go that far. Surely we need them both: each sees something the other doesn't—and Freud, anyway, is the superior writer.
