My theory on why the music in Mean Girls is so bland compared to the Broadway musical is similar to why they didn’t really market it as a musical. A lot of modern Broadway songs are very loud and/or dramatic in a way most people aren’t familiar with. I’m guessing you’d never go up to a random person on the street, play Michael in the Bathroom, and say “isn’t this a banger? Don’t you think this song is amazing?” (It is an amazing song)
It seems like the producers were trying to make the new Mean Girls movie fit as broad of an audience as they possibly could. But the issue is you can’t put a lofi beat behind an energetic Broadway song and pray to the theater gods it works. The writers abandoned the only audience that would actually like their movie, and it’s not a small audience either. I don’t think Mean Girls is a bad film, I just think it could’ve used a bit more care and consideration when adapting the source material(the musical not the original movie).
Obviously I could be wrong, I just thought this was the best explanation to why they murdered Stupid With Love that badly.

This part of Come with me (reprise) always cracks me up a little. Her hopeful “You heard?” followed by his “No” 😭
Eurydice: I called your name before
Orpheus: I know
Eurydice: You heard?
Orpheus: No, Mr. Hermes told me so

“Oh like waaaay more than I should, especially with movies and like shows when I’m in New York City or concerts. Way more than I should.
Don’t tell Hank though. I’ve been at it for years now; it’s kinda hard to stop.
Good things are just so expensive!”

Shows I saw in 2023 Part 4: 3 Show Broadway Weekend, also known as Standby/Swing/Alternate/Understudy appreciation weekend.
Okay, we’re caught up, from here on out, I’ll post each individual show (Sorry not sorry, I’m seeing Phantom five times in 2 countries in October)
In September, my mom and I sprinted through three shows and we had a non-primary actor in a principal role every time. They were all amazing.
1. Funny Girl-Julie Benko as Fanny. This one we knew because of a special TDF show. I was thrilled to see a rising star and Ramin Karimloo in a totally different role. Also, Fanny needs to be played by a Jewish actress. I don’t mind Lea Michele in the role because while raised Catholic she has Jewish heritage and has experienced discrimination because of it. Julie Benko is practicing and very open about her Judaism on social media, which is awesome!
2. Sweeney Todd. We found out while in line for security that Josh Groban had Covid and was out. Lesson learned—swap out your tickets at the box office for a refund and re-buy at lower cost. I really wanted to see Annaleigh Ashford and she was still in, plus Nicholas Christopher was incredible as Sweeney. Gaten Matarazzo, who I didn’t know was in the show, was incredible. I knew very little about this show and loved this absolutely deranged show—which featured a full orchestra in an era of downsized pits. We were basically sitting on top of the percussion. Gong, please.
3. Hadestown. Yaya was in for Eva. I’m a Classicist and know the stories but to see it still will break your heart. I cried.
Also—all the Playbills have the same color scheme?

I got Kimberly Akimbo tickets through Broadway Roulette (they pick a random show for you) so I went in completely blind. One thing I really didn’t expect was for it to be set in New Jersey (my home state) so when they called out my town the collective gasp from my family was hysterical.

Spring Awakening and Sing Street as Netflix shows
I saw these promo pictures from Spring Awakening and Sing Street and the first thing I thought was that they looked like those pictures they use for the Netflix show titles
I’m grasping at straws here guys. Both these shows mean the world to me but neither of them are currently open or producing any new content. It hurts.
I wish Broadway had a place where they streamed shows but we can’t event get a decent Proshot so
