Meghan Markle photos from Texas expose a big problem for Duchess

Meghan Markle was seen paying respects in Texas where 19 schoolchildren were murdered - but the photos raise some uncomfortable questions. Daniela Elser @DanielaElser

Meghan Markle has visited Uvalde in Texas, laying flowers at a memorial for the victims of the mass school shooting. The Duchess of Sussex also donated food and drinks to a blood drive at a local community centre. A Sussex representative says she travelled "in a personal capacity as a mother" and offers "her condolences".

Anyone else remember the forget-me-nots? It was September 1, 2020 when photos popped up of freshly-minted Californians Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, planting forget-me-nots seeds at a preschool in Los Angeles to mark the anniversary of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales’ death.

We know all of this because the couple released touching images of the outing, showing them surrounded by small children as they created a garden bed of the tragic Princess’ favourite flowers in an outing that nearly groaned so heavy-handed was the symbolism and pathos.

That same confluence of Meghan, camera lenses and other people’s children is back in the headlines after the 40-year-old mother-of-two flew three and a half hours from their home to visit Uvalde, Texas where 19 schoolchildren were murdered earlier this week by a gunman.

“Meghan took the trip in a personal capacity as a mother, to offer her condolences and support in person to a community experiencing unimaginable grief,” People, which has a canny knack for getting the inside Sussex scoop, has reported.

That’s a line that might be easier to swallow if she hadn’t chosen to “offer her condolences” smack back in front of the horde of photographers and cameras posted at a memorial to the young victims and if her presence hadn’t immediately ricocheted around social media and news outlets.

Let me say, I have no doubt that her heart is hurting, like millions of other people in the US and around the world, at the thought of such unspeakable loss. What is not up for debate is how genuine, or how strong, her feelings here might be. Not in the least.

But what is deeply problematic is that this trip looks horribly like an attempt to co-opt an unimaginable tragedy for her own PR gain.

The biggest question here is, what did Meghan think would happen when she rolled up in Texas? She is far from being a babe in the woods when it comes to understanding how the press works and surely she must have known that her pitching up in a small Texas town was always going to set off a media storm and would prove a major distraction from the bigger issues at play.

So why go? What did she think she could achieve by going there?

This was not a moment where Meghan’s presence could help highlight an overlooked issue or bring national media attention to bear on a forgotten community.

It’s worth pointing out here that President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr Jill Biden and other prominent Texan celebrities like Mathew McConaughy, who has pondered a tilt at the governorship, have stayed away from the town in the immediate aftermath of the heinous killings. (On Friday it was announced that the Bidens would be travelling to Texas this coming Sunday to “grieve with the community.”)

There are any number of generous and smart ways that Meghan could have used her reach and wealth to support the Uvalde community and which did not necessitate her becoming the star of the show.

How about using some of the reported $140 million that Netflix could end up paying the couple to make a sizeable donation to any number of the charities and organisations working towards gun control reform.

Everytown is a “movement of moms, dads, students, survivors, educators, gun owners, and concerned citizens” trying to deal with the scourge of gun violence – why not just give them a whopping cheque and urge their supporters to follow suit?

There is also the question, why now? Where was the Duchess last week when ten people were murdered in what authorities believe was a racially-motivated massacre in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York?

There have been 26 school shootings in the United States this year prior to the devastating events in Uvalde. At no other time has gun violence been a cause which the humanitarian Duke and Duchess have spoken out about.

Then there is the Netflix question. With Page Six having revealed last week that Harry and Meghan have agreed to something that sounds markedly like a reality series (sorry, the correct nomenclature here is a “‘at-home with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex-style’ docuseries”) did the TV cameras also travel with Meghan?

Will, months from now, we be watching teary close-ups of Meghan as she recounts her heart string-tugging mercy mission to Ulvade? (At the time of writing, the Daily Mail has reported that it is “unclear” whether the Duchess was accompanied by a crew from the streaming giant.)

On face value, Meghan’s visit looks a lot like Kate, Duchess of Cambridge’s in March 2021 to pay her respects at the memorial for murdered woman Sarah Everard but look a little closer and that argument falls apart.

Most glaringly, the only images we have of Kate were ones taken by those in the crowd at the memorial on their phones and show her walking, head down, and with purpose, to lay flowers.

Meanwhile, there is a veritable smorgasbord of high resolution shots of Meghan in Uvalde thanks to the fact that the world’s largest photo agencies and news outlets were out in force already at the memorial she visited.

In one video posted to social media, it is clear how close snappers got to the Duchess. Given that her head of security, Alberto Alvarez, was on hand, according to the Daily Mail, and could surely have been interceded here, the most obvious conclusion was that she did not have a problem with photographers getting so close.

(Another distinction – Sarah Everard was abducted from a neighbourhood only a 15-minute drive from the Cambridges’ Kensington Palace residence so this literally hit close to home for Kate.)

Also while in Texas, Meghan visited a local community centre which was running a blood drive and where she donated food. “She did not want anybody to know who she was,” a volunteer there told the Mail.

Just how plausible is this? She is one of the most famous people on the planet. Did she really think she could pop in without being recognised? She could also have ordered pallets of food and water to be delivered to the community centre without ever having to go anywhere near the press.

The Sussexes have quite the track record when it comes to ostensibly private moments finding their way into the public realm. In August 2020 they volunteered at a Baby2Baby event in Los Angeles, handing out back-to-school supplies, and took their own photographer to capture them helping out.

Then in November that same year they staged their own DIY Remembrance Day service by laying flowers on two Commonwealth War graves in Los Angeles with a professional snapper in tow.

Her own husband has spoken about the complexities of grief last year having said of the mass outpouring of anguish at his mother’s death: “(I was) showing one-tenth of the emotion that everybody else was showing: This was my mum – you never even met her. I was so angry with what happened to her and that there was no justice, at all. Nothing came from that.”

The saying goes, charity begins at home. In this instance, it might have been better if charity had stayed at home too.

I just couldn’t get the idea of Louis, Liam, and Harry as the three fairy godmothers (fathers? non-binary magical beings who aren’t parents?) out of my mind. The official prompt will come with the other drabble! Enjoy the light-hearted humour!

Got this spell on me (’cause everything you do is magic)

Niall loves his flatmates.  Truly, there’s never a dull moment when the four of them are all home. The three Brits are oddly protective of him, something about him living in a strange land or summat.

Louis will fight the weather to make sure they’ve got a footie match to watch. Harry will create a new designer store to keep Niall in the latest fashions that work for him. And Liam pulls every delicious food Niall ever wants out of thin air. No, it’s never a dull moment when they’re around.

That insanity might have a wee bit to do with their magic.

Something whistles through the air.

“Blue.”

As Louis’s tart declaration rings behind him, Niall flops back into the sofa and makes himself comfortable. He flicks on the telly and finds the most recent match.

Harry huffs somewhere on the opposite side. Another whistle sings from his end of the room. “Pink.”

Schwip.

“He looks brilliant in blue.”

Schwip.

“He’ll stand out in pink.”

Niall probably shouldn’t have let Harry and Louis decide his outfit for the Gala Friday night.

Schwip.

“He doesn’t need to stand out. He needs to look good.”

Schwip.

“He always looks good.”

“Batter?”

Niall glances up at Liam, holding out a bowl to him. He’s got a spot of chocolate dough on his cheek and some hair falling over one eyebrow. The bowl he’s holding has mostly been emptied, but he always lets Niall lick the containers.

Niall takes the bowl, peering over Liam’s shoulder.

The dishes are washing themselves, there’s another bowl stirring itself on the worktop, and Louis’s guarding the border between kitchen and living room. Hair fluffy and torso wrapped in a loose, royal blue jumper, he’s facing Harry, who’s defending the window on the other end of the flat. The early-afternoon light filtering in glitters off Harry’s rings and the shine in his fitted lilac shirt.

True to form, they’re glaring daggers past their wands in a British standoff over a flamingo-coloured Paul Smith suit that’s floating on its own in the centre of the room.

Niall tips his head left then right, impressed. “Full sentences, proper grammar, no swearing or name-calling. Sounds like progress,” he says to Liam.

Liam screws his face up skeptically. He sticks his wand over his upper lip like a mustache and rolls it between his fingers as he thinks, which twists his features up to look even more doubtful. “Ah...”

Louis twips his wand and crosses his arms in one fluid movement. Not quite a twirl, not quite a whip, it’s what Niall has dubbed a twip. Sapphire sparks shoot out of the end of his wand as it’s being tucked under Louis’s arm. They smack into the suit and it transforms into a beautiful periwinkle.

“Blue.”

Harry scrunches his nose and swishes his wand in an understated pointing motion. Magenta sparks shoot from the end and the suit blooms a lovely pale rose. “Pink.”

Without missing a beat, Louis flicks his wand up like he’s flicking Harry off with it. More cerulean sparks. The suit reverts back. “Blue.”

Niall rolls his eyes.

Liam just shrugs and taps the side of the bowl with his wand in a nudge, completely unaffected by the madness behind him.

Niall scoops a heaping fingerful of chocolate batter onto his tongue. His eyes widen. Feet flattening on the floor, he stares between Liam and the traces of batter. “Nandoca’s Choice?”

Liam winks. “I get it right then?”

Niall loves his flat mates. He’s certain there’s no one in London who would try to recreate Nando’s for him with magic. Actually, he doesn’t know anyone else with magic, just these three eccentric misfits who it feels like Niall’s known all his life.

“Pink.”

“Blue.”

Niall swipes up another glob of perfection, sucking on his finger as he jerks a nod towards the other two. “Is this still because Haz ‘flirted’ one smile too many with that bloke at the pub last night?”

Harry had turned on his blinding charm to distract the bartender because Louis got a mite too tipsy too early. Alcohol loosens the link with their magic and Niall, in his non-magic role as damage control, hadn’t been expecting anything to happen so soon. Louis’s pint had frothed teal and spouted out like a volcano when he’d burst out laughing. Niall hadn’t covered it fast enough and the bartender saw it.

But Niall knows that’s all semantics to Louis when he’s halfway to flutered and watching his partner make googly-eyes at a stranger.

Liam shrugs a yes, scooping out a small sample himself and giving it a taste. His eyes pop in delight. “They’ll sort it tonight.”

Niall snorts. “With which wands?”

The question is rhetorical because he knows the answer, but Liam responds anyway. Liam’s got the strangest and honestly quaintest quirk of being incapable of perceiving what’s rhetorical.

“Both, I reckon.”

“Blue!”

“Pink!” The tempo increases until Louis and Harry are practically shouting overtop each other. Magic whips behind him and Liam and ruffles Niall’s hair.

“Blue!”

“Pink!”

A small implosion resounds through the flat. Liam glances up and sighs. Niall gathers the last of the glorious Nando’s batter and hands the bowl back to Liam. He takes the bowl and disappears back to the kitchen, fwipping his wand by his shoulder towards the suit without looking.

In the silence, the excitement on the telly from the announcer buzzes as though the proverbial dust is clearing.

Louis flops down next to him and twists, throwing his legs over Niall’s lap. In the far edge of his vision, Niall watches Louis’s wand twirl in a circle. A bowl of Coco Pops appears in Louis’s hand.

“Should’ve gone left. Chelsea’s defense is weaker on the left,” Louis grumbles with his mouth full.

Niall glances at Louis and tries not to laugh. With his eyes trained on the telly, Louis dings his spoon against the bottom of his bowl like his hair and eyebrows aren’t a vibrant shade of bubblegum pink that, combined with the sleep-fluff of the strands, make him into a life-size piece of cotton candy.

The sofa dips on his other side before Niall can answer Louis.

“You say that every time,” Harry mutters as he lifts Louis’s feet and drops them on his own lap. The pout on his face matches the cobalt blue his brows and curls are now dyed. With the expression and colour combination, Harry looks like a caricature of an anime character and Niall barely manages to keep a straight face.

“Because it’s still true,” Louis gruffs back. His legs dig into Niall’s thighs when he shifts. Niall glances down to see him burrowing his feet under Harry’s hands until Harry starts rubbing them.

Niall chuckles and shakes his head. The suit is now a boring grey, like a canvas waiting to be finished. Whatever colour it is the moment he walks out the door will be fine with him. His flatmates are ridiculous, but he wouldn’t give them up even for the chance to have magic too.

The Story of Us-Chapter 1

Jily (James Potter/ Lily Evans), minor wolfstar

Modern Muggle AU. When Lily Evans meets the man across the hall due to a fire alarm, she has no idea that a new chapter of her life has begun. Featuring a librarian Lily and sports journalist James.

Chapter 1- I was enchanted to meet you. 

Of course, the fire alarm would go off right as Lily was getting her bath ready. Lily cursed but was grateful that she hadn’t yet stripped down. 

She grabbed her keys and phone and slipped on shoes before heading out the door. She almost went to the elevator before she remembered that one had to take the stairs in case of emergency. 

She didn’t see anyone until she got to the third floor. Most days, she was thankful to have the top floor of her apartment building, but this was one of those times where she wasn’t so pleased. 

Lily was surprised by the number of people who filled the parking lot. She didn’t think the building was that big. She knew that they needed to stand back, so she went to her assigned parking space. She heard fire engines in the distance and for the first time, Lily wondered if there was an actual fire. The alarm in her apartment went off every time she popped some popcorn. 

She leaned against her car, the same old Toyota that she had bought right before uni, and opened her phone. She wished she had brought the book she had planned to read in her bath, but settled on mindlessly scrolling through social media, thankful that September hadn’t brought in cold weather, as she was wearing a t shirt and shorts.

She was seeing which former classmate had gotten engaged this week when she glanced up and saw a man holding a large, fluffy ginger cat. 

The man was handsome, a mop of curls on his head and thick black glasses. He was tall and had nice arms, judging by the way his t-shirt hugged his arms. 

He walked to the car besides Lily, meaning that he must be her neighbor, as the parking assignments were done by apartment number. The man unlocked his the door to a newer looking Volvo and gently sat his cat down in the backseat. 

“What’s your cat name?” Lily asked, as he closed the door. The man turned and smirked. 

“Buttercream,” he replied. Lily smiled and laughed a little. The man had a little bit of a Scottish accent as he talked. 

“That’s an interesting name for a cat,” she said. 

“He was named at the shelter. I didn’t have the heart to change it,” he replied. He leaned against the side of the car. Buttercream peaked up from the window beside him, wondering why his owner put him in the car. The man ran a hand through his hair. “So, we must be neighbors.”

“Seems like it. When did you move in?” Lily asked. “Last I checked an old man named Sal lived across from me.”

“I moved in about two weeks ago,” he replied. 

“Nice.”

It was quiet for a second. Lily turned and faced forward to see the fire truck arriving, it’s flashing lights blinding her a bit before they turned off. She wondered what happened to Sal for a minute.

“I’m James, by the way,” the man said. Lily turned back towards him, Sal forgotten.

“I’m Lily. Pleasure to meet you,” she said, flashing a polite smile. 

“How long have you lived here?” James asked, putting his hands in his pocket of his sweatpants.

“About a year now,” Lily said, flipping her hair over her shoulder. “I moved here when I graduated uni.”

“Oh nice. I just graduated,” James said. “Would have been sooner but I had to take some time off.”

“What did you study?” 

“Sports Journalism and Broadcasting.”

Lily hummed. “And you landed a job here? I didn’t think we had any professional Sports teams here.”

The man tsked. 

“That’s where you would be wrong,” he said. “Our lovely town has a professional bowling team.”

Lily couldn’t help the laugh that escaped her. 

“Do we really?” she asked. James nodded, a bright smile on his face. 

“We do. The Cannons,” he said. “Practice every Thursday at the Hog’s Head Bowling Alley.”

Lily giggled a little more. 

“So where do you work?” she asked. 

“The Prophet. I cover all secondary schools sports and the Bowling team,” James said. She liked that he seemed thrilled that that was his job. “What about you, Lily?”

“I’m a librarian,” she replied. “Actually at the branch just down the street from the Prophet offices.”

“Oh that sounds interesting,” James said. Lily was pleased to see that he looked like he actually meant it. Most people had one of two reactions when Lily disclosed her profession. The “that sounds boring” and the “why that?”. 

“Did you go to uni for that?” he asked. 

“Yeah. I’m working on a post grad degree now,” she said. “I want to run the whole library someday, you know?”

James hummed and looked thoughtful for a second. 

“You know,” he began. “I never thought that you needed a degree to be a librarian.”

“Not a lot of people do,” she replied. She looked from James to the window of his car, where Buttercream was swatting at the window. She smiled a bit. 

Silence fell again and Lily felt the need to say something. 

“So, where are you from?” she asked.

“Scotland. Elgin to be exact,” he replied. “It’s near the Loch Ness.”

“And Inverness,” Lily supplied. Outlander was a guilty pleasure of hers so she was quite familiar with the fictional version of that area.

James cocked his head to the side. 

“I think you’re the first Brit I’ve ever met that knew that,” he said. Lily laughed. 

“I could tell you why, but I think you’d laugh at me,” she said. “I would expect you to have a thicker accent than you have though.”

James sighed. “Unfortunately, I spent way too much time at a British Boarding school.”

“Probably so posh they didn’t like the Scots much?” Lily asked. 

“Yep. Tried to beat it out of me but it still lingers,” he said. “I can’t speak a lick of Gaelic though.”

“Neither can I,” she said. She felt smug as James laughed. 

“So, care to tell me why you’re so familiar with the Scottish Highlands?” he asked, crossing his arms. 

Lily looked away. 

“I said you’ll probably laugh at me for it,” she repeated. 

“I promise I won’t.”

Lily thought for a second. She normally wasn’t ashamed of her love for the smutty books, normally defended them to critics who say they aren’t real literature, but she reserved from actually saying anything. Maybe because she never had to talk about the books with a Scottish person before. 

“The series, Outlander,” she said. She looked back at James, whose expression hadn’t changed.

“I’ve never heard of it,” he said. 

“It’s a book series,” she supplied. “There’s also a television show.”

“Hmm. I’ll guess I’ll have to look into it. It may make me homesick though.”

The firemen started leaving and the others in the parking lot started heading back towards the building. 

“Well, I guess that’s the all clear,” James said. 

Lily waited for him to retrieve Buttercream, who let out a large meow as James scooped him up. He held Buttercream close to his chest. 

“So, where are you from?” James asked as they started walking. 

“Cokeworth,” she replied. 

“I can’t say I know where that is,” James asked. 

“I wouldn’t expect you too,” she replied. “It’s just a small town North of London. Dead in the middle of England.”

James nodded and they walked back in. Buttercream wasn’t a fan of being jostled up the stairs, as he meowed so loud it echoed through the stairs, causing Lily to laugh. 

“So Lily, I’ll guess I’ll be seeing you around, then?” James asked as they neared their doors. He ran a hand through his hair, making it even more unruly than it had been. 

“Of course,” she said. He smiled and grabbed his keys out of his pocket. 

Lily told him to have a nice evening before she unlocked her door and went to her apartment. She went to go drain her cold bathwater and decided a shower would have to do. 

Later, she went to grab the book she had intended on reading in the tub, but stopped short. She grabbed her copy of Outlander instead.

Sofia had just celebrated her first birthday, and it was a double celebration for the Strand-Reyes household as her adoption was officially finalized. Even though they'd had her since she was two weeks old, it took a little bit for the paperwork to work through the courts. But they'd just found out on Friday that everything was signed and official. Sofia didn't totally understand the double celebration, but her dads and all their family and friends did.

Owen and Carlos's mom were currently cleaning up their kitchen while TK and Carlos said goodbye to everyone. Sofia had crashed from her sugar high and was currently sleeping on TK's shoulder. Once everyone was gone, Carlos tried to stop their parents from cleaning, but they wouldn't hear of it. "Ok, ok," he chuckles. "I'm gonna go help Ty get the princess down, then we'll be back," he tells them heading upstairs.

When Carlos gets upstairs, TK is standing in Sofia's door just watching her sleep in her crib. Carlos wraps his arms around TK and lays his head on TK's shoulder. "Mmmm she's gonna love having a bigger room in the new house," TK whispers. "We can move her up to a big girl bed too," Carlos agrees.

TK smiles at his husband. "She'll love that. No more trying to flip herself out." They both chuckle as she rolls the other way and pops her thumb in her mouth. "We've got to break that habit too," TK groans making Carlos chuckle.

"She'll outgrow it. Come on we need to get our parents out so we can discuss our other plans," Carlos grins making TK smirk.

"Mmmm Officer, I do like how you think." TK leans up giving Carlos a quick kiss before they turn on the night light by the door and leave it cracked. They head back downstairs to chat with their parents for a minute before seeing them out. Carlos takes in all the new toys scattered around their living room and shakes his head. "I swear they spoil her so much."

TK laughs as he's already settling in on the couch with his phone and a grin. "And who was it that insisted the playhouse wasn't enough and had to get a swing set too?" He teases Carlos getting an eye roll and exasperated huff. "Exactly," TK laughs as he crawls into Carlos's lap so they can share the screen.

Sofia was going with Carlos's mom and oldest sister tomorrow for a shopping trip for new shoes and probably clothes while her dads went to their tattoo appointment. They're last joint appointment had been when they gotten each other's initial tattooed on their ring fingers right after their wedding. Neither wanted to lose his ring or have something happen to it while on shift, but they also wanted it known they were happily taken. It had been TK's idea and Carlos loved it.

Now they were getting something to symbolize the growth of their family, their little girl. It felt so good to officially call her theirs. “I’m thinking this,” TK says showing him the screen. Displayed was a gorgeous rose bloomed out; “Think her name scrolled across it. Maybe on my chest?” TK asks as Carlos just stares. 

“Think it would looking fucking gorgeous,” he finally gets out imagining it on his husband’s chest. 

TK gives him a big smile and a kiss to the cheek. “What are you thinking about getting?” he asks Carlos passing him the phone to search. TK watches him searching and can’t help but grin knowing Carlos is going to go with something sappy. “Stop,” Carlos blushes as TK’s grin at Carlos’s searches. 

“It’s adorable how sappy you are,” TK grins nipping at Carlos’s chin. “Oh! That,” TK says pointing at the screen. 

“Yea?” Carlos had been looking at it, but he knew TK would probably tease him about it even though Carlos really loved it. It was incredibly sweet, but also tough he thought, and he knew it would look really good. 

“It’s definitely you,” TK grins. “Could get it here,” he says tracing his fingers over Carlos’s inside bicep making Carlos shiver. “Think we can get her to make a fist before we leave so we can get a picture?” Carlos asks TK as he screenshots his selection like TK had done.

“Oh, yea,” TK grins. Carlos chuckles knowing TK could probably get Sofia to do anything he wanted. She was totally enamored with “dada” right now even though “papa” was not far behind. Now that their decisions have been made, they check on their sleeping angel one more time before they go to bed themselves. 

They’re able to get several hours of sleep before Carlos hears a thump and a whine. “Dios,” he groans seeing it’s barely six am. TK whines and tries to burrow further into the bed making Carlos chuckle. “I got her. Even though she’s just like you,” he grunts as he gets up. TK doesn’t even grumble already back asleep as Carlos goes across the hall to find their one year old sitting in the floor with tears. 

“Oh Sofia,” Carlos says shaking his head as he scoops her up. There’s no injuries because they’ve put extra padding on top of the carpet after the first instances of Sofia flipping herself out of her crib and scaring them to death. 

“Papa,” she whines as she buries her face in his neck sniffling. 

“I know. But if you would wait for Papa or Dada to come get you, it wouldn’t hurt as bad,” he reminds her even though he knows it won’t do any good. Once her mind is set to getting up in the mornings, there is no stopping her. She is like TK in the fact she finds trouble, but she takes after Carlos in being a morning person. 

“Dada,” she says as they go back to Carlos and TK’s bedroom. 

“Dada’s still sleeping. Papa is gonna get dressed and then we’ll go start breakfast before Abuela and Tia get here,” he tells her quietly laying on the bed for some sleepy dada cuddles while Carlos gets dressed. She knows TK is not a morning person, but she loves cuddling up against him while he sleeps. 

Carlos snaps a quick picture of them unable to stop himself at the cuteness his husband and little girl give off. Once he’s dressed he scoops Sofia up and carries her downstairs. He gets her set up in her high chair with milk and Mickey on the TV while he cooks. TK stumbles down once he smells the coffee, and Sofia giggles at him. “Morning princess,” TK says dropping a kiss on her head before giving Carlos a good morning kiss. 

They share breakfast, Sofia wearing more than she eats because she’s finally reached an independent streak and insists on doing it herself. TK gets her to make a fist against his and Carlos’s and TK snaps a quick picture. Once they are done, TK takes her to get cleaned up and dressed while Carlos cleans the kitchen. It’s not long before his mom and sister are knocking on their door. He lets them in as TK brings Sofia back downstairs dressed and with her favorite backpack. “Be good baby girl,” Carlos tells her with a hug before she’s flying into her Tia’s arms. 

Once they’re out the door, TK and Carlos share a more heated good morning kiss, along with a very heated and very steam shower. Carlos loves watching new ink go on his boy, and just the thought of it, makes him horny enough for a steamy shower before they go. Once they finally stumble out of the shower, they both dress and head out to the tattoo parlor. 

TK goes first and gets the stunning rose on his right side above his pec close to his shoulder. The red of the rose is gorgeous against his skin, and Sofia’s name is eloquently scrolled across it. It was truly gorgeous. Carlos goes next and they show the artist the sketch from the phone along with the picture TK had snapped that morning. He does up his own sketch from their picture and it is truly gorgeous. 

They outline the tat on his bicep, and TK can’t help the soft look he gives Carlos. He definitely is starting to get Carlos’s appeal at watching him get a tattoo. It is going to be perfect and can always be added to in the future.  

Carlos loves it, so much. They get wrapped up and head back home. Sofia is waiting on them, and they both tell her she has to be careful with them. She nods and her eyes go wide as they show her the new art. She doesn’t totally understand it or the meanings behind them yet, but she loves the colors and lines. They know when she’s older she truly understand the meaning and how much her dads love her. Because they love her more than they ever dreamed possible, and these new tattoos are proof of that.

So, I kinda got a sugar rush when I was watching a tiktok compilation on youtube. And the idea of the first words but with multiple people popped in my head. So I decided to do a lil snippet. I may still have too much in my system but eehhhhhhh just makes my brain go zoom!

I love the new outfit caused Roman to switch up his attire everyday he could, but being a well-known actor made that a common sentence. Not a very common first sentence luckily.

I fiddled with my newest piercing, the third on my ears. I had gotten it less than two months ago, which had gotten dirty looks from my parents when i saw them. They had disowned me several years prior after learning I was gay, and trans. With a shit-eating grin, I flipped them a double bird. After they turned away in horror, I mounted my motorcycle and roared down the streets. I parked it behind the restaurant I worked at, locking it up on a special pole my brother had installed when I got hired. 

“Reeem. Seen our parents lately?” I called as I shoved open the back door. He poked his head back, tilting his sunglasses down as I removed my patchwork hoodie.

“What parents. All you’ve got is me, babes. But, yes. I saw the people who birthed us a few days ago. I assume you ran across them and they disapproved?”

“Of what? My top surgery, new piercing? Answer to that one is all of it” I gave him a quick peck on the cheek and waved to one of his partners, Remus. I tapped my ear after tying on an apron. He pulled out his ear so I could see the blue pin in it. I shot a thumbs-up as I straightened my posture to wait on my first table. The first few hours passed in a blur of people I didn’t care to make note of. 

“Excuse me, sir. I believe we have a reservation?” A weedy man flagged me down. I raised an eyebrow as I checked the schedule. 

“Only one, and that’s for R. Roy. One sec-” I turned around and shouted over my shoulder “Re? What time was the reservation coming in?” 

“That’s for m-”

“Uh, 3 o’clock or so” Remus surfaced, cutting off the man. 

“I’m afraid I’m here on Mr. Roy’s beh-” The man tried again, this time I cut him off. 

“That was twenty minutes ago. And where did Brit go? They were supposed to be doing this” 

“EXCUSE ME. I AM HERE TO MAKE SURE MR. ROY’S TABLE IS READY” The man practically screamed, cutting off our conversation. 

“Ah, I’m afraid he’ll have to come himself. We only answer to our customers” Re cut in, smiling wide. 

“You and I both know that isn’t true you idiot” An almost-familiar voice accompanied the man himself. 

“RoRo!” My sibling-in-law immediately brightened, scooping the smaller man into a hug. I chuckled behind one hand as the man made breathless protests. When he was at last released, my laughter got louder because it was the Roman Roy, and his appearance was all mused up now. 

“I’m so sorry sir! I’ll go get your backup right now!” The assistant started to buzz nervously around the famous man, reminding me of a fly. 

“No, no. I’ll be fine. This is a family place, so it’s not a big deal if I look a little messed up” He soothed, waving the man out the door. My laughter had not ceased by the time he had turned his attention to me. 

“What are you laughing at hot topic?” I clasped my wrist as the words tattooed across it flared with heat. I shoved the discomfort down, offering my hand.

“Only your fly-like assistant. I’m Virgil Maelstrom. I’m the younger brother of that idiot’s partner. Or one of them at least” Mr Roy took my hand, shaking it briskly before following Remus to the table near the counter. I pulled down my sleeve to see a name written under my words. Roman. I was soulmates with ROMAN ROY the singer! How did I end up with him. Emile caught me staring numbly as new words appeared beneath the original ones. 

“So. Finally met your soulmate?” They asked, a soft smile gracing their features. The smile that had caused my crush all those years ago. I had long grown out of it, but it still held power for their partners and me. 

“One of them I guess. It’s Roman Roy” I whispered the last part, showing them my arm. They hummed thoughtfully, messaging their own wrist. Rem had told me about his own experiences all those years ago, but to actually experience it was insane. 

“Well, why don’t you go tell him?” 

“I...can’t. He didn’t react to me saying anything. It was like I was just another person, y’know?” 

“Well, as your sibling-in-law, I say we’re gonna tell him. C’mon” They pulled me after them. I tried to make excuses, but the doctor was in full help mode. There would be no stopping them. 

“Uh, what’s up honey?” Re asked, looking confused at the determined march. 

“Roman. Good to see you. I found you a soulmate” They yanked me forward as they spoke, lighting up in pride. 

“Look, I’m sorry. They’re just re-” I started babbling, reaching my exposed arm up, forgetting it was free for anyone to read. 

“That’s my name” A soft voice interrupted me. Then a whoop from Re shattered the shock. 

“Lil’ bro! Look at that, two siblings, two chance meetings in this restaurant!”

“What did you say your name was-ow!” He cried out as words burned into his arm. Only your fly-like assistant -Virgil appeared beneath another set of words.

“I- Virgil. I’m Virgil Maelstrom. And it looks like we have another soulmate” He scooted over, nodding for me to sit by him. I took it hesitatingly, watching as his hands started moving as Remus drew him back into a conversation. The shop was closed as Roman ate, and paid for the rest of us to join him. I buzzed nervously, playing my my earring once more. It wasn’t until we were cleaning up when Roman approached me. 

“So. Uh. Virgil? Would you. Would you w-. Wouldyoubemyboyfriend?” He stammered, so at odds with how he was when in the public eye. I nodded mutely, and he swept me into a hug. 

~Elsewhere, A few months later?~

My hands shook as I reached for the top shelf. I wobbled, leaning heavily on my cane. I snarled, planting my cane firmly and stretching for the stuff I had put up there. 

“Sir, do you need help?” A woman approached me. I nodded, and she got it down easily. 

“Thank you mx-”

“Oh, no. It’s Mrs. Smith. Have a good day sir!” She pranced off, ignoring my protest that I was not a ‘sir’. The fire that had scarred me burned away my gender too. I hoisted the bag onto my good shoulder and walked the opposite way. I did not look forward to returning to the place I was forced to call ‘home’. 

“I’m home” I called, opening the door slowly. My girlfriend ran around the corner, beaming. 

“Sweetie! I missed you so much! I was gonna be so sad if you hadn’t gotten back so soon!” She nearly yelled, her face dropping slightly at the thought. 

“No, I wouldn’t. You know I try to be home as soon as I can” I offered a soothing smile. She took my cane and dragged me after her. She ignored my winces, her face screwed up so she couldn’t see. I kept as quiet as I could until the tv concert of Double R. I beamed as he sung, his current outfit looking so much better on him than the previous. When it had finished, my girlfriend was fast asleep on the opposite side of the couch. On a complete whim, I stood up and limped to the door. Taking my cane, I set out on a walk.

“Ro, be careful. You’re easily recognizable” Virgil begged as I stepped outside.

“Don’t worry my storm cloud. I promise to not draw unnecessary attention-” He snorted so I revised my statement with a glare “-I promise not to draw any attention to myself. I’ll be back soon” 

“Whatever. I’ll have my phone on me, so call if you get in trouble” He closed the door behind him. We had been dating for a few months, and they’d been the best (and safest, but don’t tell Virgil that) of my life. I couldn’t wait to meet the third member of our soulmate bond though. I drew the hood of my sweatshirt, borrowed from Virge, up over my head. I wandered aimlessly for a while before deciding to get some milkshakes before heading back. I bumped into someone as I was putting in my earbuds.

“Oh my gosh, are you ok?!” I asked them, and they waved me off. 

“Yea whatever” They mumbled to the ground. I offered them a hand up. They took it and when meeting my eyes, just stared. 

“I love the new outfit!” They finally blurted out. I let out a yelp as my arm suddenly got warm. 

“Thanks! I uh, I think you should know that you may be my second soulmate?” I said, drawing back my sleeve to show them my first message. Just like when Virgil’s message had finally appeared on my arm, there was a name there now. Blocky letters spelled out: Ethan. 

“I...yea. That’s my name. I’m Ethan! Ethan Snips. They/them please” they spoke hurriedly. I nodded, sweeping them up into a hug. 

“C’mon! You’ve gotta meet your other soulmate now” I smiled as they stared in disbelief when my own first sentence to them appeared with my name.

I was soulmates with Roman. Roy! And there was a third person. I obviously needed to meet them as I had their message left. But I had two soulmates and one of them is famous!

“Wait I- nevermind. Please, just take me to meet them” I smiled, limping after him as quickly as possible. He bought three milkshakes, which he rudely refused to give me mine until we got back. We were near his trailer when I heard her. 

“She doesn’t sound happy” Roman turned nervously towards the sound.

“No, she isn’t. Hurry, please” I nearly shoved him in my haste to get away. 

“Bad?” He asked, meeting my eyes. I noticed he didn’t even seem to register my scars

“Very bad” I nodded, raising a hand up towards my blind eye as if it would keep her from coming. 

“HELP! SECURITY!” He screamed at the top of his lungs before scooping me up and running. I yelped, clinging to my cane and the arm wrapped around my chest. 

“Princey, you idiot, what did you do!” A dark haired man appeared, one hand already on his hip.

“Reeescued someone?” Roman smiled charmingly. 

“You idiot. He’s pretty, so I can see why you wanted to be knight in shining armor”

“No, you’re prettier. Handsome! Like the moon” I mumbled dazed. 

“Thanks, why wear those gloves?” I saw his frazzled gaze on my threadbare gloves. I clapped one hand to my arm where  warmth radiated suddenly. I raised my cane in answer.

“This is Ethan! Our second soulmate! Uh, they/them. I need to explain to the head of security why I uh...just screamed. Have fun!” Roman dashed out the door. 

“I’m Virgil. I’m assuming that was your mark suddenly warm, so my name should be under it” He sat a few feet away, playing with a small ball. I checked, and that was true. He didn’t move any closer or try to continue the conversation. It seemed like his question was more of a defense mechanism than him actually asking. 

“Virgil?”

“Hm? What’s up?” He looked up.

“What’s your family like?” There was a small chuckle as he picked up the ball and started tossing it between his hands.

“Well, I’m assuming you don’t want to hear about my parents. They disowned me a few years back. My older brother Remy basically raised me anyways. He married Ro’s older sibling, and Dr. Picani. I work at the restaurant they own. I met Ro a few months back when he came in, and we started dating” 

“Oh.” I traced the end of my shoe in thought. 

“Here. A secret for a secret? I’ll you something most people don’t know about me for something about you?” 

“Uh, sure. My middle name is Daniel”

“Ohhhh that’s kinda sweet! Well, I’m trans”

“Huh. And once again society has made equal exchange impossible”

“Ah! I see we have a philosopher” Roman came back in, kicking off his shoes and handing out replacement milkshakes.

“Yea. it happened aft-After a certain`”

“You don’t have to tell us if you’re not ready. We have time” Virgil interrupted me. 

“No. No, I want it in the open. I was caught in a fire, which caused serious damage to most of my left side, and my hands” I pulled off my gloves, showing the scars that across them. Virgil reached over, offering a hand in invitation. I shook my head and he withdrew it without comment. I already felt safer with these two than I had with anyone else.

I didn’t forget this, I promise! I finally got around to actually writing this, it’s much longer than expected and verges on Teen and Up, but I’m proud of it. It has not been beta-ed or brit-picked. Anyways here it is … Heat Wave, also on ao3 here

To say that it was hot was an understatement. It was a heat wave for the record books. It was getting up to almost 38 degrees and Sherlock was sure he was going to melt any second now, and all he’d done all day was lay around on the sofa wishing they had an air conditioner and cursing the fact that their only fan had taken an unfortunate plummet off of the window ledge last month when he’d decided to enter through that same window instead of the door to the flat to avoid Mycroft, the pompous git. He had enough energy left in him to feel sorry for John, who’d had to wrench himself out of bed at some ungodly hour of the morning to go to work, and then would have to take the steaming hot tube home later this evening, hopefully bringing home something to cool them both down. He was just settling in to take a nap to escape the heat when he heard John’s footsteps on the stairs.

“John?” He called out, confused.

“Hello love,” John responded as he toed of his shoes. “The air conditioner at the clinic broke down so they had to close early. How are things here?”

“Miserable, I’m melting John. Melting!” Sherlock groaned.

“I sure hope you’re not,” John murmured low in his ear as he nuzzled a bristly kiss onto Sherlock’s cheek, “Because I brought home your favorite from that posh ice cream parlor to help us both cool down.”

“Oh John!” Sherlock murmured, a not unfamiliar heat already dripping through his words, “How you spoil me! How can I ever repay you?” He feigned playfully yet still low with intent.

“You can sit right there and help me eat this ice cream before it melts, then we can get onto … other things.” John winked through a cheeky smile. Sherlock budged up so John could sit down next to him on the sofa with one spoon and a tub of Chocolate Brownie Swirl. John popped off the top with a poof of releasing air and scooped out a huge bite which he held out to Sherlock invitingly, who scarfed down the bite so fast John blinked with wide eyes, frozen in shock for a moment, before leaning his head back for a long, deep guffaw of laughter. “Hungry, were you?”

“Starving John, starving.” Sherlock repeated with another heated gaze. John took his own bite of the ice cream before scooping out another for Sherlock, who, in his haste to eat the enticing cream, managed to smear chocolate all over his mouth.

“Jesus, Sherlock, you’re 36 years old, not 6 years old. You’d think you’d be able to eat ice cream without making a disastrous mess by now.”

“It’s no fun that way John!” Sherlock seemed to smile and pout simultaneously, his eyes glittering with mirth.

“Here then, at least let me help get all that chocolate off of your face so you don’t get too sticky.” Sherlock merely hummed in agreement and shut his eyes with a contented smile. He started a little when he felt John’s coarse beard brush against the sensitive skin of his lip as John began to lick and suck at the chocolate beginning to drip down Sherlock’s chin. “Lovely Sherlock, you taste fantastic.” Sherlock once again only hummed in response but his face seemed to flush with a heat that had nothing to do with the waning temperature of the golden air around them as the sun began to settle low in the sky.

When John backed away, deeming him sufficiently cleaned of chocolate, Sherlock grabbed the spoon from him and scooped a chunk of ice cream out and held it out for John. John went to take the bite into his mouth, far slower than Sherlock had, but Sherlock took advantage of the slower pace to smush the helping all through John’s budding whiskers. He then leaned forward and did the same thing to John that John had done to him, only slower and far more sensuously than John had, taking his time with skilled tongue and lips to get all the little brownie crumbs from where they lodged in the hairs, mixing with the slightly salty taste of John’s skin. John moaned indecently and rubbed a hand up and down his thigh to try to control himself, but as Sherlock began to move away from his mouth and down toward his neck the hand moved urgently to Sherlock’s chest to push him backwards just enough to detach him from his neck, where he’d been in the works of leaving a beautiful bruise. “Sherlock,” John whispered breathlessly, “If this is where this is headed I’m going to need you to grab a few flannels, the tub of ice cream, and meet me in the bedroom, preferably undressed, unless you want me to do it. And we can do this properly, maybe even put this lovely new beard to use. Yeah?”

“Oh god yes John.”

And that was how, the next day, John had the privilege of attempting to explain to Mrs. Hudson how they got chocolate all over their best set of bed clothes without releasing any of the more … explicit details. Let’s just say she was not particularly pleased, John was unbelievably mortified, and Sherlock was giggling like a school kid as John came back up the stairs, face flaming red before he tackled Sherlock to the floor in a giggling, rumbling tangle of limbs. “That’s what you get for giggling at me, Sherlock Holmes!” So they tussled and tumbled and wrestled until they fell to the floor in a breathless heap, shared a deep kiss, and then went about their evening as usual, with takeout, a film that Sherlock ruined the ending for, again, and cuddles on the sofa.

Summary: This was requested by an Anon, it said: “Hello, I wanted to ask if you could do a tom hiddleston x reader oneshot for me, where they are on the ellen show and they're already together for a few years but nobody really knows about it? And on the show the reader could maybe play 'who'd you rather?' with tom sitting next to her and being one of the options on the screen, so at the end of the game it just slipps out by accident and for the rest of the interview its very fluffy? And that we maybe get to see, whats they're life like after?” That’s basically what it is.

“Everybody, 2 minutes to start!” Shouted some guy, and then approached us “Guys, c’mon you need to be in front of the camera like, now!” He ushered us quickly to the white sofas, Ellen was already in one, smiling at us. She obviously knows we are together, practically everyone in the industry does, they just have respected our wishes of keeping it private, for now.

“Okay, we are back in 3, 2, 1…” The audience cheered at the signal and Tom and I smiled at the cameras, Ellen started rapidly talking and re-introducing us

“Welcome back everybody, we are still here with the beautiful Y/N Y/L and the dashing Tom Hiddleston!” The audience cheered and we smiled at them, Tom leaned back a bit and opened his legs in his typical man-whore fashion I looked at him and smiled, God, I love this man.

“So, Y/N,” Ellen said, catching my attention and making me look at her, “we believe you are single, right?” I blushed and stammered a bit, I could feel Tom tensing beside me but he didn’t say anything.

“Apparently so,” I said finally, not really answering her question.

“Well, great, because I am an amazing person and I will get you a beau with this little game we like to call ‘Who’d you rather?’ You ready?” Ellen smiled mischievously and I relaxed a bit, I know this game, what’s the worst that can happen, right?

“I think so,” I said, and looked at Tom that only gave me an encouraging smile, “will Tom be playing too?”

“Oh, darling, don’t drag me into this!” He laughed his typical ‘hehehe’ laugh and touched his tie nervously.

“Don’t worry, Y/N, Tom will play another game later,” Ellen winked at us and the audience cheered, “so, we will show you two images and you will pick which one you would rather, okay?”

“I would rather, what?” I asked, playing dumb like everyone else I had seen that had played the game.

“Have some pudding, darling, of course!” Tom said beside me and I laughed with everyone else in the studio.

“Okay, okay, I’m ready”

The monitor in front of us showed two pictures: on the left there was Sebastian Stan and on the right there was Benedict Cumberbatch, “so, Sebastian or Benedict?” Asked Ellen, smiling.

“But Ben is married!” I said.

“It’s just pretend Y/N, play the game!” Said Ellen, acting like she was exasperated.

“Okay, okay, just because Ben is married I’ll pick Sebastian” I said, pretending to be resigned.

“So, you don’t like brits, Y/N?” Asked Ellen while the monitor showed a picture of a shirtless Zac Efron were once was a smiling Benedict. I shook my head laughing and glancing at Tom, who was touching his lips trying to suppress a smile. “Sebastian Stan or Zac Efron?”

“Zac Efron,” I said in a heartbeat.

“That was quick,” Tom said and looked at me with a raised eyebrow.

“Well, Zac Efron is everyone’s crush since High School Musical and did you see him in The Greatest Show?” I fanned myself with my hand and smiled at Tom, I knew he saw that movie, we watched it together and he already knew what I thought of Zac.

“Hmm, yeah, I think you’re right.” The audience roared at Tom’s words and Ellen and I laughed.

“Zac Efron or Harry Styles?”

“I think I’m gonna stick with Zac.”

“Alright, she keeps Zac. Zac or Prince Harry?”

“Well, I bet everyone would like to date a Prince, but he is married so, Zac again.”

“Wow, Zac over a Prince, maybe you should really give him a call.” 

“Maybe I will.” I laughed and Ellen did too, Tom didn’t find it so funny but he acted like it for the sake of appearances.

“Zac Efron or Chris Martin?”

“Chris Martin, I love Coldplay.” 

“Look at that, you switched Zac for Chris Martin! I was thinking Zac would win”

“But Coldplay is the best, and I bet Chris would be super romantic and poetic.” 

“You really are putting a lot of thought into this, Y/N” Tom said, faking a smile, I knew he was getting jealous and I really wished this game would end soon.

“Well, I like to pick very carefully who I eat pudding with,” I winked at him, hoping to make him smile while the audience cheered and he shook his head, smiling.

“Okay, Y/N, Chris Martin or Tom Hiddleston?” Ellen looked at me, moving her brows in a suggestive manner. I could feel myself blushing and the audience cheering, Oh Ellen, you will pay for this.

“Hmmm…” I pretended to think about it hard, looking from Tom to the monitor, “I think I’m gonna pick Tom”

The audience cheered and after I said it his picture was in the middle of the monitor, meaning that the game was over. 

“Well, look at that! Looks like Tom wins our sweet Y/N’s heart! I think you should ask her on a date, Tom, you know, to eat a little bit of pudding?” Ellen winked at us and I just hid my face in my hands, I knew I was as red as a tomato and Tom was beside me, running his hand through his hair, down his neck and fiddling with his tie.

“Oh Ellen, I think that you suggested it a few years too late,” What? I looked at him with my eyes nearly popping out of their sockets Tom, what are you doing? “We have been eating more than just pudding for a while now.” He took my hand in his and gave it a squeeze, assuring me that everything was going to be okay and smiling at me with love and adoration in his eyes.

“Well look at that! It seems the cat is out of the bag now! We will be back with Y/N L/N and Tom Hiddleston after a short break. Don’t forget to check out the new Loki series in Disney+. We will be talking about it and this new declaration after the short break so stay in tune!” Some camera man signaled that we no longer were on air and Ellen stood up to talk to her producer and our managers, looks like this interview turned into our relationship revelation.

“Darling, are you okay? Are you mad?” Tom asked, taking my hand in his and looking into my eyes with a worried expression on his face.

“No, no, of course I’m not mad, I’m just a bit surprised, you were the one who wanted to keep this out of the public eye.”

“Yes, I know, but I have been thinking and I’m ready to tell the world that you are mine, we are going to live together and I really think that you are the woman of my life. I want everyone to know that I’m yours and you are mine.” He took my face in his hands and I lost myself in his beautiful blue eyes, I just smiled and he smiled back.

“I love you.” I said.

“I love you, too.” He said.

“Okay lovebirds, let’s make this quick, Luke and Penelope already said what it’s out of bounds, but if you don’t want to answer something you don’t have to, I’m not gonna pressure you guys. That much.” Ellen winked and took a sit, holding a few cards, maybe with her ground rules and the series information that we were originally in the show for promoting. “C’mon Tom, you can sit closer to her than that now! You know the public already loves you two together, make the fangirls more crazy with your adorable love.” Tom and I laughed and he scooped closer to me, I rested back on the sofa and he put his arms around my shoulder giving me a kiss on the cheek that made the audience roar just in time for the start of the show.

“Welcome again! Before the break we played ‘Who’d you rather?’ With Y/N and Tom made a declaration that I’m sure has the internet going crazy.” We both nervously laughed and Tom squeezed my shoulder surely trying to reassure me and himself that everything was going to be okay. “First of all, we are going to talk about the new Loki series, were earlier this week was revealed that you, Y/N” Ellen pointed at me,” are going to be Sigyn, the Goddes of Fidelity and, as many already know, Loki’s wife in the original norse mythology and the Marvel Comics, anything you can share with us about it? Will there be romance?”

I looked at Penelope, my manager, and she nodded and made a sign with her fingers, Well, I guess I can talk but not much, is that what she is trying to tell me? “Well, yes, Sigyn is Loki’s wife in the norse myths and the Marvel Comics, but we already know that the guys from the MCU like to change things up a bit, so who knows, maybe she will be Loki’s love interest, or his enemy, or just a good friend.” I saw Penelope giving me a thumbs up and I relaxed, Okay, I can do this.

“That is the worst answer ever,” said Ellen, and everyone laughed, “C’mon will you or will you not be marrying the Asgardian Prince?”

I made a sign of sealing my lips and throwing the imaginary key away, Ellen rolled her eyes and the looked at Tom “Okay, Tom, can you answer that question?” 

Tom just looked to the other side, whistling like he was non the wiser. “I see,” said Ellen,”Tom, if your character died in Infinity War, does this mean that in this series we will learn about his past? Or he didn’t die at all and one of the theories that has been spread all over the internet is true?”

Tom sat at the edge of the seat and run his hands through his thighs, “Hmm, maybe the series are pre-Infinity War, maybe they are post-Infinity War, maybe it’s an alternate universe were Loki isn’t dead, who knows… The thing about all these internet theories is that I wish each and everyone of them were true, but to be honest, they have noticed things that I wasn’t even aware of…”

“Like the theory about the hands and the clones!” I interrupted him.

“Exactly, they created this huge thing, and when someone in a parking lot mentioned it to me I was like ‘Dude, that is really amazing, but I didn’t do that on purpose!’, so, you guys just have to wait and see.”

“I don’t know if you two are the worst or the best guests ever, you won’t reveal anything! I wish you were Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland instead!” 

The audience cheered and we laughed, “Aren’t they coming next week?” I asked, looking at Tom and then at Ellen with furrowed brows.

“Yes, but they will be coming with Benedict, so he can avoid any spoiler being revealed. He is like their official babysitter.” Tom laughed and took my hand, interlocking his fingers with mine, I smiled and kissed his jaw, forgetting for just a moment that we were in Live Television and there were thousands of people watching our every move. The audience awed and that broke our little bubble of love. I flushed and tried to lean away from Tom, but he squeezed my hand a bit tighter and just smiled his reassuring smile at me, Fuck it, I thought, they already know, why act like he isn’t the love of my life.

“Seems like you guys won’t be saying much about the series, so I’m gonna ask what everyone wants to know right now instead… Since when have you two been going out? We want all the juicy details.”

Tom laughed with his signature laugh and then said “We met at a BAFTA event, can’t really say if it was 2013 or 2014, we started out as friends, because both of our careers were just starting and we flew around a lot. After Y/N’s first big premier I asked her to be my girlfriend and we have been together ever since, right love?” There it was, he hadn’t called me love in the entire time we had been on the show. He was trying to keep our relationship a secret and I hadn’t realized how much I missed the pet name until now. I just nodded at him and smiled like the fool in love that I knew I was.

“And how are things between you too? How do you keep up with both your crazy schedules and all that?” 

“There’s a lot of trust,” I started, “and patience. We also talk a lot on the phone, we FaceTime, text, email, anything. It is hard, sometimes, I miss him desperately, but he always knows how to surprise me and make the times apart a bit less bitter.” I kissed the knuckles of his hand that was still wrapped with mine and then rested both on my lap, the audience went crazy and I just couldn’t stop smiling at my man.

“Alright, lovebirds, we have run out of time, but I have a surprise for everyone here, because I really am an amazing person I give you: the exclusive trailer for the Loki series who will be available this year on Disney’s Streaming Service, Disney+. Bye!”

Tom and I waved at the cameras while the audience roared, then, there was an immediate silence when the trailer started rolling from all the monitors in the studio. 

Looks like today we really broke the internet.

Nicole Kessler: We thought it would be fun to invite local makers for several pop-up shops throughout our five completed homes. We wanted to showcase all that Austin has to offer, so the pop ups will feature everything from art, handbags and design accessories. We’re so excited to host Fawn & Blue, Python Handbags, Kerr St Candle Co, India Hicks, Erin Donahue Tice Art, Brit & Belle and Red Denim. Fellow TSG Austin members Loose Leaf Florals and Gracious Garlands are also doing a giveaway with us!

TSG: We live to tour homes, what’s the Cayena architectural vibe?

Natalie Kopp: The homes have a really sleek, architectural design that’s modern and minimalist but still very comfortable. Think open concept floor-plans, tons of natural light, high ceilings, rooftop terraces and chef-inspired kitchens.

Champagne runs in behind him, All Man pulls the ropes down and Champagne dumps himself to the outside but he plays it off and just keeps walking up the ramp without looking back, then he picks up a guardrail and pulls it out and I guess tries to pick it up and slam it but it’s bolted down so he just looks dumb. All Man still in ring as “You Deserve It” chants rain down. Nick Simmonds: Ive followed this mans career for over 10 years and I never thought I’d seeing him hold the world title, anybody can win! All you have to do is work hard! All Man is the champion of the world! All Man and All Woman celebrate a bit longer at ringside and All Man jumps into a corner of the front row where about 8 fans body surf him as it fades into black.. but results are as follows:

Killing Eve

A British spy thriller TV show produced by BBC, primarily starring Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh, based on the Villanelle novel series by Luke Jennings. The show centers around Eve Polastri, a bored British intelligence agent who gets involved in a web of assassinations committed by the psychopathic Villanelle (played by Comer), Eve and Villanelle form a unparalleled obsession with each other, which proves to be pretty fatal. Season One was written primarily by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and season 2 by Emerald Fennell. The series has been renewed for a third and fourth season now, with the third set to release this spring. The show has been nominated for just abut every award under the sun and has nabbed a golden globe, emmy, 5 BRIT awards, a SAG award, a Peabody award, and more.

Naps

The tradition of napping dates back thousands of years, with modern-day siestas originating in Spain. Spain’s influence has led to siestas becoming common in Spanish-speaking nations around the world, as well as Greece, Italy, The Philippines, Nigeria, and more. A 2019 black comedy thriller film directed and written by Bong Joon Ho co-written with Han Jin-won, filmed in South Korea. The film centers on the Kim family, who are in desperate need of work, they become involved with the wealthy Park family. Through deceit and some twists, the family’s paths become complicated and lies threaten to unravel, the families connection even becomes deadly. The film stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Jang Hye-jin, and Lee Jung-eun.

Parasite is so popular it has gone on to even be optioned as an expanded series on HBO. The film also took in 257 million US dollars, a healthy amount over its 11.4-million-dollar budget.

What happens in Cannes famously doesn’t stay in Cannes. The Drum’s moles were on the ground, and our very own pub – The Drum Arms – which gave us plenty of access to the scandals happening behind the scenes.

A French air traffic control strike the weekend before Cannes led to topsy-turvy, rerouted trips across Europe for hundreds of delegates on route to the Riviera; we heard of attendees flying via Cologne, Milan and even Luxembourg to make sure they didn’t miss that 9am breakfast meeting.

But which programmatic supremo was spotted making the most of his delayed flight in the airport bar? His penchant for Gatwick’s champagne led to an impulsive – and most likely expensive – Lacoste shopping spree.

Don’t call it a comeback

He may have lost the ‘most powerful man in advertising’ crown but yet again Sir Martin Sorrell managed to become the biggest story of the week. Which glamorous party had a distinct lack of toilets for the 500+ people it invited to its celeb-filled celebration? One desperate marketer charmingly told The Drum staff he was going to do a Bear Grylls and “poo in the woods”.

It’s not clear if he was joking or not but he did wander off into the night, which begs the question: if a client does a number two in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Diva on the docks

This East End pop star embraced her inner Mariah Carey this week. When arriving at the port for a night on the yachts she refused to leave her bejewelled high heels on the jetty, forcing staff to choose between a great PR opportunity and their boat hire deposit.

Later, when the same London diva was refused entry to an over-capacity agency party she loudly declared the shop’s comms director was a “jobsworth” in front of their colleagues. It must have been a damned good party! Brits abroad, eh?

Cooking doesn’t get tougher than this

This year’s News UK party, once again hosted a atop a giant hill at the Château de Garibondy was an absolute hive of gossip. With a set from Kylie, Idris Elba and Fatboy Slim on the decks and a pool stocked with pink flamingos, the glitz and glamour was unrivaled elsewhere.

Aussie chef John Torode was even spotted cooking up a storm at the BBQ, but The Drum’s roving reporters couldn’t help but notice he looked grumpier than a unsuccessful Masterchef contestant.

To be fair, it’s probably not much fun grilling brisket in the blistering heat while drunken ad execs guzzle elderflower gin and tonics around you. It looked like he cheered up a bit later though, when he and his wife Lisa Faulkner got a snap with the Spinning Around singer.

The crowd went absolutely wild for Kylie, with one chief marketing officer dancing non-stop for the whole session and another top creative giving it his all during Can’t Get You Out of My Head.

Praise you like I should

Fatboy Slim, meanwhile, wins the Gold Lion for nicest celebrity of the festival. We heard he spent an hour before his set hanging out with fans and taking pictures. Eat, sleep, network, repeat, right?

Post-party chaos

It’s a shame then, that the plug was literally pulled on Fatboy Slim’s set. Organisers were believed to have been sticking to strict timings to avoid catching the attention of the French police; a plan which ultimately failed.

Hearsay on the ground said this was due to noise complaints, but as more officers showed up just as the party was ending, rumours swirled that it was because a rowdy group of underage teenagers wanted to rave to Fatboy.

The police presence then stopped planned pick-up cars from driving up to collect worse-for-wear guests from the château. This resulted in dozens of high-heeled delegates winding their way down a steep, tree-lined hill in the pitch black to hitch a ride back to their hotels – lions, and tigers and swears, oh my!

Heartthrob Hegarty

In case you were wondering, Sir John Hegarty has still got it. After he spoke at a press conference, the scenes of female fans flocking for some facetime with the BBH founder were akin to Channing Tatum’s media lounge appearance in 2016. One journalist even invited him to spend a holiday with her in Colombia – whenever, wherever!

Sacré bleu!

Which restaurant along Le Croisette doesn’t believe in ‘going dutch’ – or, indeed #TimesUp? During one dinner, we were told waiting staff handed out gender-specific menus where the women don’t see the prices.

Staff from one media firm were shocked to discover this when they noticed that only the sole male of the group could see the cost on the menu he was handed. Lucky fella.

This US star came to the speaker’s corner of the press lounge to talk business, but was left frustrated after the reporting media failed to ask any her questions at all about the announcement she made.

Jambon ou fromage?

A journalist’s diet at Cannes usually consists of aspirin, coffee and rosé, accompanied by agency dinners if you’re lucky or McDonald’s if you’re not. But this year it all changed with the introduction of the press room buffet – a revelation that appeared around 3pm every day.

On the Monday there was cheese and bread. On the Tuesday there was ham and bread. Rumours spread that the much-anticipated French coupling of cheese AND ham would arrive on the Wednesday. But alas – never the two did meet.

Band on the run

We were so enamored with The Drum’s new branding that we flew a band of drummers from London to France for the week. Their job was to disrupt the industry – literally – with the harmonious sounds of banging and hollering. Unfortunately, not everyone was a fan.

The police and event security asked the troop to “allons-y!” on several occasions, and Campaign sent them packing from outside their 50th birthday celebrations.

The biggest reaction came when the band surprised our friends at Ad Age – and were subsequently manhandled out of the area.

Which social figure left The Drum reporters waiting 90 minutes for an interview? After an hour and a half of waiting (with only frantic texts from her PR to give us hope) we gave up – only to land an interview with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, aka Game of Thrones’ Jaime Lannister, a few boats down. Both his hands were fully operational.

Which well-known industry PR was said to have his laptop at the Lad Bible villa, only to realise it was missing on is way to the airport. His cab had to turn around so he could return to collect the computer.

One Australian agency got a bit excitable in the car on its way to one of the many events. As the poor driver weaved his way through the rolling Riviera hills, too much pre-8pm rosé (we heard them say they paid €350 for a bottle) had gone to the execs’ heads.

Unprompted, one of the group put LeAnn Rimes’ 90s classic Can’t Fight the Moonlight on full blast in the backseat, loudly singing along and trying to get our reporters to dance. We preferred the original.

A few wise words - What makes news news?

Big Ben not chiming for 4 years is one of the biggest news stories of the week. Why?

I know it is a symbol of how fantastically British we are (yawn) but I don’t know how this story has managed to take over front pages and headline news for almost a week now. Bare in mind that during that time around 500 people have died in mud slides in Sierra Leone, US Air strikes have killed around 100 people in Iraq and Finland suffered their first ever terrorist attack.

Of course, the tragic Barcelona terror attack has been big news worldwide too. Deservedly, this cruel and maddening attack has caught the hearts of many people both domestic and abroad but did you even know 2 people had been stabbed to death in Finland? The perpetrator was an 18-year-old Morrocan born asylum seeker who supported ISIS and shouted Allahu Akbar. This screams Daily Mail but for some reason it just didn’t quite cut it.

There is always something that makes it stand out.

News values are what they’re generically called. The things that make you go hmmmm. Stuff like celebrity status, surprise factor or something to do with the political elite, although, for me, one particular factor stands out. Being relevant to the average person is by far the most important: Does it affect their day to day life? Could it affect them in future? Have they been on holiday there? Is the Royal Family involved? Was Wayne Rooney on Top of the Pops? This is what makes news tick.

  This video highlights how news is constructed to fit in with what we expect in an efficient and easy to understand way. Honestly.

Let me break this down even more. 500 people have died in Sierra Leone this week in what was a horrible natural disaster. There were no Brits there, it is not a popular British holiday and bad things happen in Africa all the time. This doesn’t mean we should care any less but it does mean the BBC cares more about who is on Strictly.

As well as this you have to remember the economic and timing limitations that the news has. No one can take in all the news in all the world and capitalism means it is all about ratings. Yes, it really is that simple, don’t argue, money always wins.

Let’s say the 10 o’clock news is an hour long and the schedule has already been decided. Half way through the program, two massive news stories break. One is that an extremist group in South America has kidnapped and killed over 1000 children, the other is that a convicted pedophile has escaped custody and is on the run in your area. The second story will always win.

Does this Daily Mail piece have any intellectual value? It doesn’t matter

When you consider the scale of the first story, surely people will want to know but the reality is it wouldn’t last as long in the memory. We have no political involvement in that area and it is miles away from our families. That is the brutal yet understandable way the human brain works.

These limitations then go on to have a big influence on how the news is broadcasted. Big headlines that catch your eye, monotonous reporters breaking down the facts, everything has its place and some things just don’t fit. It makes really you have to admit. These are the problems with the news of today and the worst bit is there might not be a better way of doing it. A shit realization but yep, that’s the way it is.

  Where we come in is pressuring those in charge to pick the right news. I see so many complaints online asking why certain things get more coverage and whilst we must understand that total information is not possible, we can still push the institutions in the direction we want them.  Yes, the news might have their own way of doing things but in this technological age, where information is so free, they can’t get away with telling us what we SHOULD be learning about.

So what I’m trying to say here is, the best way to cut the crap, is to ignore it.  Ignore the Big Bens, the gossip and the cats up a tree. Focus on the men biting dogs and not the dogs biting men and mold our news agenda into what will help us best. This is the 21st century, we’re all journalists now, pick your stories wisely.
