CRANE’S BIGGEST PHOBIAS.

Jonathan Crane is obviously a man who thrives on fear, whether it is the fear of others -- or his own. Something that is instrumental in understanding Crane is that he doesn’t act just to instill fear in others -- it’s to sustain that same fear in himself. The power of fear and the power of the mind itself are the centerpieces of Crane’s character. Crane is, at all times, barely holding it together. His calm composure is a complete façade and he is ready to devolve into hysterics at any second. This is why it’s important, I think, to discuss his worst fears, the fears that are the biggest source of his nightmares and night terrors.

FORMIDAPHOBIA. This one is very easy to explain, especially since it already has a basis in canon, kinda. For as goofy as I think Gotham (the show) is, I think their take on Crane is incredibly faithful. I don’t know if Crane actually had a fear of Scarecrows in Pre-52 (I know his grandmother was incredibly abusive and he had a fear of crows) but the idea of him constantly being stalked by a Scarecrow of his imagination is great. For my version, Crane’s fear of Scarecrows was one of his first fears. When he was growing up on his grandmother’s farm, and on days when both his parents were at work and it was just him and his grandmother, she would scare him by pranking him with the creepy, straw man, and telling him that if he wasn’t a good kid, it would come after him. Of course, Crane’s imagination has always been wild, so it took this and ran with it.

PYROPHOBIA. A very recent acquisition for my version of Crane. Although he had a healthy respect for the destructive, life-ending potential of fire before, it was only after the recent attack on Crane’s farm and attempt on his life that he grew terrified of the flame. While it turned out to be neither Garfield Lynns or Bridgit Pike, a criminal who identified themselves as “Firefly” came after Crane, torching his fields and much of his land. While he was able to activate the defenses of his home in time, shielding it from the fire, “Firefly” was still able to find and attack Crane. Roughly a third of Crane’s body is now covered in burns, and he lost his leg and hand to the attack, permanently burning it into his memory. While he was able to slaughter the attacker in a fit of adrenaline-fueled terror, Crane still suffers debilitating fear of any flame at all.

CLAUSTROPHOBIA. When Crane’s father snapped, he snapped hard. For that single year that Crane was subject to experiments and tests, his father kept Crane hidden from the world. Jonathan was presumed dead, and the only place his father would let him exist in was a dark, small, decrepit shed. For that year, Crane would scream for hours and hours, begging to be let out. As his lungs became worse, mostly as a result of the toxins being put into his veins, that dark, musty room became even more horrible for him. Crane’s hatred and fear of Arkham extends to its much-too-small cells and rooms.

SOMNIPHOBIA. Unsurprisingly, Crane has a difficult time sleeping. Ever since being given the FT-001, the first fear toxin formula which still persists in his veins to this day, his overwhelming anxieties and paranoia have made sleep nigh impossible, without even addressing his undiagnosed mental illnesses such as ADHD and Bipolar Disorder, both of which greatly affect his health and ability to sleep. To Crane, the bed represents a gateway into his nightmares, a time to subject himself to his terrors and fears. Ironically, once he began to idealize fear, he began to sleep much more often. Regardless, he still has much anxiety and worry about being able to sleep, so this phobia is still in play.

CHIROPTOPHOBIA. Crane has a special relationship with fear and bats, even extending beyond his terror of Batman himself. As a young child, when his parents were still together, they would occasionally be asked to take trips to several universities around the country for work-related studies. One of these prestigious universities, Gotham university, was hosting an event for bioengineers and chemists -- just like Jonathan’s parents. Thinking it a good idea to bring along their son, they journeyed all the way from South Carolina up to New Jersey, to Gotham. Staying for a full week, it was on the fifth day that the five year old Jonathan begged to go to the zoo with his parents to see the birds. As they had finished up their work, they agreed, and the trio spent most, if not all of that day at Gotham’s zoo. Unsurprisingly, as with most events in Jonathan’s life, something went wrong. Having wandered away from his parents late in the day, Crane found himself stumbling upon an unsupervised exhibit -- but there were no animals inside. The sun was going down by then, and his parents were searching for him. Ducking into a nearby cave in search of the animals, the five year old failed to heed the sign. “Gotham Zoo’s Bat Cave.” Despite the fact that bats are usually peaceful creatures, Crane ended up aggravating and provoking them by accident, and his parents found him ten minutes later, a sobbing and bloody mess after having been mauled and scratched by several of the animals. Since then, Crane has had a healthy dose of fear of them, even as he attempts to rid himself of his other animal-related phobias.

The presence of Batman does not help.

3. bury a friend - billie eilish: i don't care i'm gonna say it. this is a great fucking song and the vibes are immaculate especially the bridge like are you kidding? i love the horror movie energy of it so much

4. nightmare - halsey: MY MF WIFE omg i love miss halsey with my whole heart. she really went tf in on this one and for that i thank her. she sounds so powerful on this one and i just- yes

5. horizon - bad seed rising: rip to this band they not dead just broken up :( anyways i love their singers voice here and lyrics on this one feel very hopeful and the song kinda makes me think of spring time for some reason? i don't know but it's a great song

6. the fallout - crown the empire: once again I LOVE THIS BAND especially this song bc it was the first one i ever heard by them and that made me love them from the start. it has a special place in my heart for that fact and even tho it's not an emotional song it makes me emotional bc of the memories i have with it. so yeah an amazing song i love the theatrics of it and the breakdown!!! pure fuego

7. kids in love - mayday parade: this one really throws me back to the start of my emo days. i listened to this song bc it was the basis of a 5sos one shot djskdhdjd. ANYWAYS love this song it's a bop and i listen to it every time it comes on shuffle

8. rest in piss - old wounds: oof we really getting into the diversity of my music taste with this one. so basically what this song is saying is FUCK FASCISM!!! and i agree. this song goes crazy and i love it and i love his voice and i love this band

9. voodoo doll - 5 seconds of summer: this song is a bop! such a throwback to my early emo days as well. self titled era was a Time™ and i've lowkey been missing it

10. choker - beach goons: this song is pretty short and simple but i love her bc it was the first song i heard by this band and i immediately fell in love with them. i miss them so much as well. nothing happened to them just thinking about seeing them live

11. untouchable - motionless in white: i fucking love motionless in white holy fuck. i will say that this is a song by them i'm more neutral towards like she's good and all but i don't love it like some others songs by them

12. detox - darke complex: another one of my absolute favorite bands and i'm still sad about them breaking up. ugh this song is so fucking good i love it so much. the bridge on this *chefs kiss* they did not have to snap so hard like damn!!

13. autumn leaves - ed sheeran: i don't listen to him v much anymore but this song still hurts. it's so pretty and the first time i heard it i cried (which partly may or may not have been bc once again it was the basis for a fic i was reading djsjskdjfk)

14. blasphemy - bring me the horizon: another song i'm a bit more neutral towards but still really enjoy this band. oli sounds great on this song tho i love his voice

15. breathe in, breathe out - set it off: I LOVE THIS BAND AHHH!! you know how some bands really aren't THAT great when they first start one which is fine but like set it off is hardly one of those bands. this is an older song by them and like they've just always been so fucking good and i love that about them

16. lucky strike - troye sivan: my mf baby troye omg. this song is a certified bop! it's so catchy and fun and he sounds so good on it. ugh i love my son

17. concrete - as it is: my other son!! I know patty walters is not the only member but i do have a special place for him in my heart so! anyways this song launches me into my sophomore year omg. i listened to this song a lot and it's just such a pure pop punk song imo and i just love it

18. fountain of youth - cane hill: this brings me back to summer 2016 which ugh one for the books y'all such a good summer. but uh yeah this song is sick i love me some good metalcore

19. all i see is gold - bridgit mendler: y'all we failed bridgit she was the unproblematic pop girlie that we needed!! this song is just stunning she sounds amazing and the energy of this song is just so real and you can really feel the tension in it

20. winter - pvris: i love pvris!!! this song lyrically isn't that fun but overall sonically it's so bouncy and upbeat and i love songs like that especially ones by pvris bc i adore lynn's voice

More Clues That Gotham Does it’s Own Thing.

No hate towards anyone, I just wanted to point out that the show doesn’t go exactly by the comics, but it’s still perfect and everyone still loves it. :) There’s been characters where we knew who they were supposed to be from day one because of their name and origin (such as Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne, etc.) and there’s been characters who we’ve met and thought we’ve known for a long time who turned out being someone else (such as Butch Gilzean turning out to be Solomon Grundy, and possibly Lee Thompkins turning out to be Harley Quinn. etc.) The show loves to throw in twists, to keep things interesting, but they stay true to the character.

1. In the comics Firefly was supposed to be a male that goes by the name Garfield Lynns. In the show Firefly is a female named Bridgit Pike.

2. No one is supposed to know Joker's real origin or name in the comics/animated series. But in the show we know Joker's name as Jerome Valeska, and that he grew up in a circus with an abusive mother.

3. Poison Ivy in the comics' name is Pamela Isley, but in the show her name is Ivy Pepper.

4. Victor Zsasz was supposed to be a serial killer that would kill anyone on sight. Victor in the show is an assassin, but he only kills the people he's assigned to kill.

5. Black Mask is a man named Roman Sionosis in the comics, but on the show his name was Richard Sionosis. He didn’t get much of a storyline, and was killed by Tabitha Galavan.

6. Leslie Thompkins was an elderly dotor in the comics, who knew Thomas and Martha Wayne. She became a mother-like figure to Bruce, and she helped Alfred raise him. It is stated that Leslie and Alfred were together. Leslie on the show is a young doctor who worked at Arkham where she met Jim Gordon. She then began a relationship with Jim, and has only met Alfred and Bruce a few times. She has also never stated she knew Thomas and Martha Wayne. None of the comics/series ever states Leslie having anything to do with Jim.

9. In the comics Jim was supposed to have an affair with Sarah Essen, but on the show she was killed by Jerome Valeska (aka: Joker)

10. In pretty much all versions (comics/movies/ etc.) Barbara Gordon is Jim Gordon’s wife, and Batgirls mother who isn’t mentioned much. In the show Barbara’s name is Barbara Kean, and she is one of the main villains.

With the fall semester officially over, much of my December was spent reading and watching up TV. Unfortunately, I basically had a cold when I came home from school for winter break that lingered around until Christmas. It went back and forth from going away to getting worse over the course me having it, likely not being helped by my winter break job either.

In short, feeling a bit under the weather gave me more of an excuse to spend some time resting and catching up on all the books and TV shows. While I’m really content with the amount and the actual books I read, I’m also glad I spent a lot of time this month with family and best friends. I had such a great, but very busy fall semester with an already equally busy January and spring semester ahead that it’s been really nice to relax and recharge.

My December reading was primarily split between some (okay, two) fantasy conclusions and plenty of contemporary and contemporary romance.

Archenemies (Renegades #2) by Marissa Meyer | My Rating: 4/5 Stars

I’ve really enjoyed this superhero-inspired series from Marissa Meyer so far, although I feel that Archenemies suffered from middle book syndrome.

The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams | Rating: 5/5

My favorite read of the month, my love for The Bromance Book Club inspired the rest of my contemporary reading in December.

The Queen of Nothing (Folk of Air #3) | Rating: 2/5

I had such high hopes for The Queen of Nothing given my love for The Wicked King, but was unfortunately really dismayed with this trilogy conclusion.

One Day in December by Josie Silver | Rating: 5/5

The only strictly holiday read on my December TBR, I’m so glad I finally got to One Day in December because I loved it so much!

How to Build a Heart by Maria Padian (ARC) | Rating: 4.5/5

I also got a small start of my 2020 review reads with How to Build a Heart, which featured many of my favorite YA contemporary elements with its own twists.

Intercepted (Playbook #1) by Alexa Martin | Rating: 5/5

Hi my name is Haley of Fangirl Fury and sports romance is one of my new favorite genres, much in thanks to Alexa Martin’s Playbook series.

Meg & Jo by Virginia Kantra | Rating: 4/5

Contemporary was the name of my reading game this month, and with the new adaptation out, I had to have some Little Women reimagined reads.

Little White Lies (Debutantes #1) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes | Rating: 4/5

Little White Lies had been on my TBR for what feels like forever, so I’m happy I finally got to it and enjoyed it this month.

Deadly Little Scandals (Debutantes #2) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes | Rating: 4.5/5

While I enjoyed Little White Lies, I absolutely adored Deadly Little Scandals. I think it had something to do with already being so familiar with the characters and the ending of book #1, but I love how the plot and twists began right from the get-go.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel S3 (Amazon Prime)- The third season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was my most anticipated show of the year, which made it even harder to have to wait until December! While I didn’t love it as much as season two (my favorite season), it still absolutely delivered and I really enjoyed each episode. I have no idea how season 4 will go, but I’m hoping we don’t have to wait over a year to find out.

Merry Happy Whatever S1 (Netflix)- I always try to watch holiday-inspired shows and movies in December, which led me to Merry Happy Whatever. This show was the right kind of cheesy for me. I felt like I re-entered my Disney Channel days, since the show stars Bridgit Mendler and Ashley Tisdale. I hope there is a second season next year!

Sugar Rush Christmas (Netflix)- Sugar Rush is my favorite baking show, so I was more than excited for its holiday edition. This is one of my favorite shows to relax to and watch with my sisters.

Glow Up S1 (Netflix)- The weekend I felt the worst was spent reading in bed and alternating between three different Netflix shows. One of those was Glow Up, a U.K.- based reality makeup competition. This was a really fun binge-watch and another show I would love to have a second season.

High School Musical the Musical series (Disney+)- Unfortunately, one of my sisters was also a bit under the weather this month. Fortunately though, we spent a day home together catching up on High School Musical the Musical (say that three times fast) series. As someone who grew up with the HSM movies and really had no expectations going in, this show has been such a pleasant surprise. It reminds me of a more PG and cheesy version of Glee.

Virgin River S1 (Netflix)- My sick weekend was also spent watching Virgin River, the romantic drama series based on Robyn Carr’s book series.

Star Wars: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi (Disney+)- With Disney+, my mom has decided that it is our mission to watch all of the Star Wars movies. I am here to admit that prior to our family watch, I hadn’t seen any Star Wars movies in full. As someone who isn’t the biggest sci-fi fan, I’ve actually enjoyed them way more than expected! I’m not sure I’ll be able to watch the first 8 movies in time to see The Rise of Skywalker in theaters, but I’m hoping so! I also might look into picking up some Star Wars canon books as well.

Burlesque (Netflix)- I was flipping through Netflix one night and had hovered over Burlesque, which ended up starting the movie which then led me to watching the entire movie right then and there. As someone who really enjoys musical movies, I’m surprised I hadn’t watched this one before because I really enjoyed it!

Living With Yourself S1 (Netflix)- While waiting for my family to sit down and watch Empire Strikes Back on Christmas Day, my sister and I randomly put on Living With Yourself and ended watching the first three episodes right then and there.We finished it three days later! I liked it way more than I thought I would and am definitely interested in a second season.

Aside from watching what basically feels like everything on every streaming platform, I didn’t do anything too bookish or fangirlish IRL this month. Here’s some bookish & fangirl news that has me really excited though:

The trailer for P.S. I Still Love You dropped!!- We now have the full trailer for my most anticipated film of the year, P.S. I Still Love You. Based on how much I loved the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before adaptation, I couldn’t be more than excited for this movie. Since the first movie delved into book #1, I’m interested to see where the movie picks up book #2 and how similar the story stays. P.S. I Still Love You comes out on Netflix on Feburary 12. The trailer made me realize that its release date is on Wednesday. Since it’s right in the middle of school week, I might make myself avoid Twitter for a few days and come home from school for the weekend and watch it on home vs. my laptop in my dorm room.

The full trailer drop for Schitt’s Creek S6- Schitt’s Creek stole my heart in 2019, and so did the full trailer for its final season. On the one hand, I’m so sad for this show to come to an end, but on the other, I think this season will be such a fantastic conclusion. The final season premieres on Pop TV on January 7.

There’s a premiere date for the Little Fires Everywhere adaptation- The television adapation of Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere will premiere on Hulu on March 18. Since Little Fires Everywhere is one of my all-time favorite reads, this means that I have until then to get Hulu – or once again borrow my best friend’s password.
