I just think it's special that Rooster and Hangman have kind of equal and parallel journeys in terms of character + flying development over the course of the film. What I mean is that their big individual triumphant moments in the narrative use their piloting choices to reflect emotional development. The film shows us from the start that they each have a Big Flaw--and the finale shows them overcoming these flaws.
Not only that, but the narrative uses their dynamic to introduce these individual shortcomings to us, the audience. Their first on screen conversation with each other is how we learn about their Big Flaws in the first place. Because of their relationship and the way they interact, we know how Rooster and Hangman are going to fly before we ever see them in the air.
For Rooster, it's "snug on that perch, waiting for just the right moment...that never comes.” We hear this over and over again, from both Hangman and Maverick–"Now you got it, don't think, just do." "Rooster, you got him, drop down and take the shot!" "Too late, had your chance.” "...same old Rooster." "You're not. flying. fast enough. You don't have a second to waste." This is Rooster’s Big Flaw–he doesn’t trust himself. He flies too slow, and he’s too careful, too hesitant in moments when he needs to believe in his abilities and let instinct take over. This is what Maverick and Hangman are trying to pound into his head the whoooole time.
And then he’s on the mission, and Fanboy’s laser doesn’t work. And instead of waiting, well: "There's no time, I'm dropping blind." "Bullseye bullseye bullseye!"
This moment is HUGE for him. Fanboy is literally telling him to wait so he can line it up, and maybe a prior Rooster would have done that, but this Rooster has finally learned that he gets one chance and he has to take the shot that's in front of him. [Cue Hangman cheering.] The decision he makes as a pilot in this moment shows that he's learned what Maverick and Hangman were trying to teach him and that he's grown emotionally. He's more sure of himself now–he was always capable of taking the shot, but now he actually trusts himself to do it.
And then we have Hangman, Bagman, Mr. "Where's he going?" "That's why we call him Hangman, he'll always hang you out to dry." "Leaving your wingman, there's a strategy I haven't seen in a while." He's not a good team player; he flies solo both literally and metaphorically. We hear this over and over again, especially from Rooster–"Watch your back, Phoenix." "You put your team in danger and your wingman's dead." Hangman’s response? “They couldn't keep up." (And I can't stop thinking about "Hangman, the only place you'll lead anyone is an early grave." There's so much history there, and so much belief from Rooster that Hangman is Not a person to depend on in a moment of crisis.)
But then, Hangman’s ultimate moment of triumph is that he refuses to leave Maverick and Rooster hanging, that he is the one person who has their backs in a moment of crisis. We see exactly how concerned he is while waiting on the carrier, and we see him ASK to go engage in the fight to fly cover for his squad when the bandits aren’t even attacking anyone yet!! Like I could seriously cry about "Dagger spare, request permission to launch and fly air cover." Because he is specifically asking so that Rooster can go back and get Mav, something that we know is completely at odds with his Big Flaw. And then we see him presumably disobey orders to show up and save Maverick and Rooster's lives anyway. He learned from Maverick and Rooster–he's part of a team now, those are his wingmen out there, and he's not leaving them behind.
So the film uses their big triumphant moments in the air to show Rooster and Hangman overcoming their respective flaws. It’s part of what makes the action of the finale so fucking good, because while yes, it is very satisfying action on its own, it’s also rooted in their character development. We’re not just happy that Rooster made the shot, we’re happy because Rooster making the shot means something about him. We’re happy that Hangman is the one to come through for Rooster and Mav because that means something about him and his growth.
The most iconic part is that the traits they each needed to adopt belonged to the other. Rooster is set up from the start as the pilot who won’t leave his wingman, even when it’s gonna cost him–“Should be us down there.” “But it’s not. And now you know a little something about Rooster.” This is the exact thing Hangman struggles with, and it’s what he overcomes to have his moment of triumph. Meanwhile Hangman is set up as the one who flies by instinct–”Yeah, you’re good, I’ll give you that.” He flies fast, he doesn’t overthink, and above all, he trusts himself as a pilot. This is the exact thing Rooster struggles with, and it’s what he has to overcome to have his moment of triumph.
The fact that the two of them have parallel arcs like this? The fact that they both learn to be better, more complete pilots by adopting the strength that comes naturally to the other?
I just think that's beautiful.

I'm a babygirl in a daddy's world > Sugar Daddy
If You Cling Too Tightly Verse by Earthangel_44 {E}
Hold on loosely
There is nothing Jake "Hangman" Seresin can't handle after he shot down the plane to save the day except for maybe one certain pilot with a taste for Hawaiian shirts.
You Might Lose Control
Three months later.
Have a Drink On Me Verse by Welcome_to_the_Badlands {E}
Have a Drink On Me
“Hey,” Mickey slurred slightly. They all look at him, and Reuben switches out his Malibu Sunset for water. “Someone should do body shots,” he said, very unsubtly glancing at Jake.
Hotter Than Hell
Or, the one with the heatwave and the popsicles.
Take My Hand and Hold On Forever by Earthangel_44 {E}
It happens again like clockwork. Every new achievement or award that Jake gets pinned to his chest. Every time he went to Afghanistan or flew with the F-151, Jake calls Bradley. Every COMM he receives or shiny new ribbon that is placed on his chest, Jake called Bradley. Or: Jake gets a lot of awards and Bradley rewards him for his good flying.
Poems About Lovers by xo_em {E}
He’s waiting for his favorite sounds of every day: the click and scrape of the front door opening then closing, a few heavy footsteps, the abrupt thud of a bag hitting the hardwood floor. Two boots following. Bradley.
Daddy Rooster Series by Renai_chan {E}
I Want To Hear You Say It Again by perishablealex {E}
The first time Jake calls Bradley daddy.
can you see me glowing by dracculaura {E}
“You know, you’re awfully moody tonight,” Jake taunts as he looks up into Bradley’s eyes. “Think you’d be in a better mood after cheating — I mean, winning earlier.” “Shut,” Bradley says, voice dipping low and husky, as he moves in even closer to Jake, hands now on the wall on either side of Jake’s face, “your fucking mouth.” “Make me.” (or, jake is a brat who craves bradley's attention)
so baby lock that door by dracculaura {E}
Maybe if Bob wasn’t so exhausted, he’d have remembered that Hangman wasn’t at the bar and it was very likely that he’d be in their room. Maybe if he hadn’t had his music up so loud, he would’ve heard the moaning, the slapping, the banging of a headboard hitting a wall. But he is exhausted, does have his music up too loud. He’s so distracted that he doesn’t even notice them until the door is closed behind him and his music is paused, and when he does, he stops dead in his tracks, eyes wide, mouth hanging open. Because Hangman is getting absolutely fucking railed by Rooster.
Sub Bradley by lovelybattle {E}
Slow
Bradley knelt in front of him, eyes lidded and mouth parted as he stared at where Jake’s fingers moved. His hands were on his thighs, cock poking up prettily, leaking and hard like it has been for the last twenty minutes. He let out a small whimper, blinking slowly, “daddy…”
Patience
Jake hummed, shifting his hips back just enough for his ass to rub against Bradley’s hard dick, earning himself a whimper as he pulled away again and Bradley tried to chase him with his hips. “Ah,” Jake said, laying his hand flat over Bradley’s chest, the other man immediately falling still against the bed sheets again. “Good boy.”
Give it to me daddy by Earthangel_44 {E}
Bradley survives the mission only to find one way to thank his savior.
touch you like I do by ginnydear {E}
Dress up, Princess by miiichaaan {E}
Jake looked at himself in their bathroom mirror, at the way the pink lace of the lingerie set he’d ordered some weeks ago, hugged his pecks, his ass, his cock so perfectly. Fascinated he ran a hand over his torso, feeling the texture, following it down to his crotch, palming himself through the fabric. He quietly smiled to himself when he thought about Bradley.
Love me one time, could not speak by miiichaaan {E}
“Jake,” Bradley breathed and moved again, ghosting his lips along the line of his ear, pushing his dick just this much deeper inside in return, “Say it again.”
As You Need Me To by perishablealex {E}
It begins with three words. No, not I love you. Who's your daddy?
Unwrap Me by Welcome_to_the_Badlands {E}
“Candy cane? Really,” he asked, chuckling. Jake cracked a smile “You know I love a good theme,” he said, winking.
I'll Treat You Sweet by Sam_Haine {E}
He imagines himself in the woman's position, on his knees in some dirty back alley, mouth wide open and taking someone's fat cock down his throat. No. He alters the scenario so that it's Rooster he's on his knees for.
Jealous Bone by Earthangel_44 {E}
Bradley gets jealous over an old squad member of Jake’s.
Be Good For Me by WhisperingNights {E}
If Rooster didn’t want him. Fine. He’d show Rooster what he could have had. The banging sounded again “I’m coming, damn!” Jake slung the door open glaring at Javy. Javy’s mouth was hanging open as he took Jake in. “How the hell did you get in those?” Jake grinned at Javy’s statement. Good. He’d put a lot of work into this.
Take it to the limit one more time by Earthangel_44 {E}
Bradley takes care of Jake for the first time.
But Only If It's With You by theinsouciantknitter {E}
The best way to celebrate surviving the unsurvivable? Sex on a bar pool table, of course.
The Only Hope for Me is You by mackwinnon {E}
“Jake,” Bradley’s voice was gentle, so unlike any other way he’d ever spoken to him, and Jake hated it. He didn’t need Rooster’s fucking pity. He didn’t need anything from anyone, least of all Rooster. Rooster, his rival. Rooster, who thought he was better than Jake. Rooster, who… Who… Rooster, who’d come looking for Jake when no one else had. Fuck. Or: After the mission, Jake disappears. Bradley goes looking for him.
it's not in the way that you hold me from old men in love Series by davidbyrne {E}
jake and bradley discover new things together in middle age
Maybe This Time Is Forever by theinsouciantknitter {E}
Jake hasn’t slept in days. Three days, to be exact. Everytime he closes his eyes he sees an outdated F-14 going down in flames into the ocean.
Say The Word by perishablealex {E}
Bradley leaves instructions for Jake. Jake follows them. - The praise begins to trickle in. “Well done, you’re so beautiful like this.” Preening at the words, Jake squirms, clenching his fingers against the sheets and inhaling shakily. Bradley’s voice is low. Jake can almost feel the brush of his voice against his ear, the ghost of the mustache tickling his lobe. “You know I can’t let you touch yourself yet, baby.”
there's money for the taking (and the happiness we all deserve) by davidbyrne {E}
“So, what, one of the richest dudes in New York wants to be your sugar daddy?” “Kinda?” Jake sits back up, straightening up and turning his body towards Javy. “He doesn’t want like sex or anything. He just needs someone to pretend to date so his uncle and PR team get off his back about his reputation.” Or a sugar daddy au in which jake is a struggling law student, bradley's a billionaire, and they weave a tangled web
Heat of the Moment by theinsouciantknitter {E}
It’s a hundred degrees in Texas, and Bradley finds that he hates it, hates the oppressive air pressing down on him, the humidity making him feel like he’s swimming with every breath he takes. He finds himself wondering, not for the first time, why he decided to come back to the homestead with Jake for their leave. They’re barely even friends, let alone the kind of people who spend their time off together.
What's my worth? by WaffleToaster {E}
Twenty-six, twenty-seven, twenty-eight… These were the only thoughts that rang through his head. Twenty-nine, thirty. Two breaths. One and two. They weren't friends, they didn't even like each other and whatever they had going between them meant nothing. And then the mission happened.   Or how Bradley and Jake went from hating each other to caring a little too much.
Rivalry On A Learning Curve by SaintClaire {E}
A couple of simple definitions: Rivalry: Competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field Archnemesis: One who is hostile to or opposes the purposes or interests of another Jake thinks about how best to define whatever the fuck it is he's got going on with Bradley. Yep. Definitely the above.
The Only Exception by mackwinnon {E}
Organized crime AU. Escort Jake meets Bradley in a club while he's with another client. Bradley's instantly intrigued and makes Jake an offer he can't refuse. It's just business. Until it isn't.
Darkness on the Edge by theinsouciantknitter {E}
There's always room for firsts in a relationship, and this one's full of them.
Priest 'verse by theinsouciantknitter {E}
One Look From You (And I Would Fall From Grace)
Jake didn’t expect this when he moved in with his grandmother. He expected to be roped into attending church with her, that’s all fine and dandy. He didn’t expect that the priest would look like that, though. He didn’t expect that he would be funny, and quick-witted. He didn’t expect him to be that young. He didn’t expect to fall in love with him.
Like a Little Prayer
Bradley has a difficult decision
Before This River Becomes an Ocean
Conversations must be had, and this is one Jake wants to avoid.
It Goes Like This (the Fourth, the Fifth)
Jake just has to get through the planning of the wedding, and then they're home free.
the Minor Fall, the Major Lift
A steadfast resolution
if you're looking for absolution (well get on your knees) by seresins {E}
Jake comes home to Texas for the summer, where he meets his church's new priest. Tempting him feels like the best kind of bad idea.
take you like a drug by coconutcordiale {E}
Murder. Jake is ready to commit murder. It’s fine. He’s a lawyer, he can represent himself in court. Because he just fell asleep. Yet here Jake is, staring at the atrocious popcorn ceiling in his bedroom, jerked awake mere minutes ago by the shrill moans of some undoubtedly gorgeous brunette and the repetitive banging of his neighbor’s headboard against the wall that he shares with Jake. * aka the neighbors au
Fucked up and pretty by pizzz_10 {E}
There’s a reason why jake is always getting under bradley’s skin, he just wants some attention.
chat with you, baby (flirt a little maybe) by acetonitril {E}
"Come on, give me a little more to work with here. How are you doing? What are you doing? Who are you doing?" The last thing, he says in a teasing tone and Bradley reacts without a second thought. “I don’t want to talk about my sex life with you, Hangman.” “And yet that’s the one thing you chose to comment on." Bradley, Jake, and accidental phone sex.
 unglued (thanks to you) by emseebeans {E}
The first time Jake says it, it’s an accident. It’s Bradley’s fault, really. It’d always been a secret Jake held onto so tight, but Bradley brings it bubbling to the surface. He pulls Jake into his orbit. He’s smooth. He’s overly sure of himself. He’ll appear to be completely uninterested one minute, to looking like he wants to devour Jake the next. And he has soft edges. He’ll say the filthiest shit in bed, and then call Jake his baby, his sweetheart. It’s no wonder the word slips out.
hits like ecstasy (comes up and bangs the sense out of me) by davidbyrne {E}
It’s a plug. Slenderer than the few they have in their collection, and a deep green. Jake opens his mouth to say something, but Bradley holds up a finger. Jake shuts his mouth. The plug starts vibrating in his palm, slow, steady pulses that build. Jake sucks in a breath.
all in by honestlydarkprincess {E}
If you had told Rooster a week ago that he would be stumbling into his base housing with Hangman, making out against every surface Rooster could push him into, he would have called you a liar. As it was, he still couldn’t quite believe this was happening, even though Hangman’s tongue was currently in his mouth. Or, the one where Hangman and Rooster hook up and Hangman slips up, admitting his daddy kink. Rooster goes all in.

I didn't get chance to read the spoiler review article about TMS Season 3 before most of the spoilers got removed sadly, but am I right that it implied Bradley goes to Cory in the finale? As in, they hook up or something? I really hope we get some payoff for all this angst and pining on Cory's side, but at the moment it just doesn't seem like Bradley reciprocates (obviously, given her relationship with Laura) so I really hope we get her initiating something!
that article didn’t make it clear what happens in the finale. from what i understood, b/l won’t be together, and b/c might be on better terms. supposedly it also ends on some cliffhanger. i don’t think b/c will hook up in s3 tbh, both of them still have a lot to work on, and bradley needs to acknowledge her feelings (which hopefully happens this season). they are all about slow burn after all, so we gotta be patient and wait for s4 i guess 🤪

Roosmav fic recs vol. 6: Bottom!Bradley favorites
It's no secret that I'm the type of reader to have top/bottom preferences, and in the case of Top Gun, I usually prefer fics with bottom!Mav, and that preference probably shows in my fic rec posts. So, here are some of my favorite bottom!Bradley fics that haven't been featured on my previous rec lists.
As always, heed the tags and possible warnings.
lift me up, draw me close (don't let go) by Lacerta 7k, E, no archive warnings apply spit as lube, miscommunication, getting together
“I can still pick you up easily,” Maverick says, oblivious to Bradley’s internal struggle. “So why did you really start avoiding that?” Bradley fully intends to act normal, or as normal as he can in the circumstances, he has an excuse ready on the tip of his tongue, but then Mav shifts his grip on Bradley to hold him a little steadier – a little closer – and his fingers press harder into Bradley’s cheeks, and he can’t– Maverick freezes, with Bradley’s half-hard cock pressed against his abdomen.
I always enjoy this author's writing, and this fic was really hot. I loved how desperate Bradley is for Mav, and they just wouldn't be them without some miscommunication.
Airstream Blues by Muccamukk 13k, E, no archive warnings apply close quarters, pining
When they headed out to Mojave following the mission, Bradley wasn't expecting Mav's trailer to be the most difficult thing to deal with.
Oh god the PINING. Bradley is so in love and so thirsty. There's an angsty undercurrent to this fic that I really love, and the writing is fantastic.
i and love and you by notyourwinter 4k, E, no archive warnings apply soulmates, crack treated seriously
From the time he’s very young, all Bradley wants is to find true love—the kind of all-consuming, soul-satisfying love he hears about in his mom’s stories of his father. And it is, perhaps, the greatest injustice of his life that he’s pretty sure he’ll never get that. It’s hard to build any sort of meaningful relationship with someone when everyone you fuck finds their true love almost immediately after.
This was such a sweet and fun fic, I loved the slightly cracky premise. Truly a joy to read.
the life you save may be your own by hazelmotes 3k, E, no archive warnings apply established relationship, porn with feelings
“Ask me, sweetheart, c’mon.” Pete started working his thumb against a bruise he’d sucked into Bradley’s collarbone, leftover from a few nights ago when some ensign had had the gall to hit on Bradley at the Hard Deck. “Ask me for what you want.” “I don’t know how,” Bradley said on a gasp, arching into the pain, into the hand of the man he belonged to. “That’s alright,” Pete said. “I can tell you how.”
This is so beautiful and intimate, with some very hot possessiveness and codependency. I'm in love with their love.
(don't) hold back by nastneast 6k, E, underage watersports, accidental pissing, humiliation, mildly dubious consent
A joyride in Mav’s P-51 left the two with more than just sweat to clean up. or the one where Bradley desperately needed to piss but Mav refused to land the damn plane. (AKA, the three times Mav made Bradley piss himself).
This author writes almost exlusively bottom!Bradley, and I could have picked pretty much any of their fics for this list, but… This one is my favorite because of sicko reasons. (No underage sex in this one, but it's implied that Maverick was into 17-year-old Bradley)
the house of wicked dreams by secondhandgloves 7k, E, rape/non-con hurt no comfort, horror, mild gore, dark!maverick
“You bought a place without scoping out the basement?” Maverick grins, sipping his beer. “You’ve seen enough horror movies to see how this’ll play out, especially around Halloween. It was nice knowing you, Bradley.” In which, Rooster buys his forever home without doing his research and Maverick visits him at night, in haunted dreams.
I'm not usually a big fan of horror, but this was just the right amount of spooky for me. This fic is amazing, but it's pretty intense, so I'd recommend opening a fluff fic in another tab to read as aftercare. :D

Grief of the Past |A Pete Mitchell Headcanon Dabble
"If the sky that we look upon Should tumble and fall Or the mountain should crumble to the sea I won't cry, I won't cry No, I won't shed a tear Just as long as you stand, stand by me"
Summary:
Maverick can't let a day go by where he doesn't think about the man that once stood beside him. His best friend. But then he realizes his true calling is right in front of him, being the dad to his son.
Words: 602
(Tags: @bayisdying, @itzyogurl92, @notyoursbutlewis. I KNOW IT'S MAVERICK BUT IT'S ALSO A SOBFEST SO LET ME LIVE)
If there was one thing Maverick could’ve had back it would’ve been his friend Goose. The man who had him as his best man at his wedding, his ashes nothing but dust in the wind.
His dog tags sat at the bottom of the ocean rusting away.
Maverick was sitting at the small pier that reached out to the ocean from behind the hard deck. He looked back seeing his best friend’s son chat away without a single worry, his appearance looking just like his father’s.
Perhaps, Rooster was supposed to be some sort of replacement.
Maverick didn’t know, he didn’t have an answer behind the way that Rooster was exactly like his father. His mother would’ve hated the fact he took the whole Goose appearance, everytime her eyes landed on a photo of him she would act like everything was fine, but in reality.. it wasn’t.
His eyes shifted back over to the drifting ocean, he was greiving over the past. The way that Goose would scoff and strut his way towards the barracks after Maverick would pull a dumb fly-by.
The conversation they had just days before his death, the words. “I just want to graduate.” Ingrained in his mind.
Goose never got that wish.
The death grip that Maverick had on his lifeless body out in that freezing cold ocean, his hands covered in a warm deep red from his dear friend.
The guy screeching at him to let him go, he couldn’t let him go. He was his only family, part of him blamed himself for Goose’s death.
The way he tried his best to resist breaking down in front of young Bradley, the kid didn’t understand. His mom was in too much of an emotional wave to be able to explain death to her four year old son.
Maverick just stood by, his heart shattered like glass on a floor. His hands trembling remember the sight of Goose’s blood on his calloused hands, his scarred hands.
The way Carole repeated that he would’ve flown without him.
It should’ve been him, not Goose.
He should’ve been the one who died that day.
The person that should’ve died was Maverick, not the man who had a family and a heart of gold.
Goose was the one who included Maverick in everything, the moment he was gone.. Maverick became a shadow, he couldn’t talk to people without his confidence builder right beside him.
Maverick still felt like a shadow, needing someone like Iceman to help him carry through… but then he lost him too.
He lost Goose, shortly after Carole, and then Iceman. The people that made his life a better place.
He just couldn’t lose anyone els-
“Mav?” Bradley’s voice was calming as the boy was looking at him, wearing his dad’s old blue surfer themed Hawaiian shirt. “Penny said you might be out here..”
Maverick looked back, his eyes looking at Bradley like a loving parent.
Bradley gave him a warm smile. “Are you ready to go?” He asked.
Maverick nodded. “I think so.”
He eventually joined side by side with his best friend's son as they were walking up the small hill of the beach, Maverick stopped midway and looked back at the ocean once more, standing awkwardly on the sand so he didn’t lose his footing.
“Thank you, Goose.” He muttered under his breath, as he went to catch up to Bradley.
The sound of seagulls growing dull, the sand under his feet leaving him.
This was it.
This is all Maverick could’ve asked for.

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie Review
Tumblr media
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley is a 386 YA Historical Fiction. It’s the first book in the Flavia de Luce series, which is 10 books long.
It is the summer of 1950–and at the once-grand mansion of Buckshaw, young Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison, is intrigued by a series of inexplicable events: A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Then, hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath. For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. “I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn’t. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life.”
I rate this book 3/5 stars.
It’s been an entire month since I actually read this book and to be honest it didn’t stick with me in any way. I’ve forgotten all of what happened within this book and only remember what I’ve written down in my notes while reading this, so here we go:
The main character is really unbelievable, she’s only 11 years old but acts way older. With the amount of knowledge she soaks up in a matter of moments she instantly sounds more like a 15-18 year old. 45-50% through the book there is a scene where the dad pretends to be Asian man for a magic trick and it feels real racist because the audiobook puts on an stereotypical accent. It’s set in the 1950′s, so I kinda understand why they did that, but still. It made me feel uncomfortable.
I noted that the reveal was rather interesting and that it was a plus, but I can’t even remember what the reveal was, so I’m trusting past me on this one.
