the Pathologic essay I wrote last year about why I think the Haruspex route Utopian ending is the overall best ending, I still stand by what I said however this somewhat structured essay holds less than half about how much I care about this ending.
In the game Pathologic there are three different routes, each corresponding to each healer. The story also has several endings, one for each of the bound (characters which as the name implies, are bound to their individual healer) as well as a bad ending if the player fails to find any sort of viable solution for the plague. This ability to choose the ending belonging to another healer is an incredibly telling one on the part of the characters, especially when it comes to the Haruspex, and his ability to choose the Utopian, and the Bachelor’s ending. This ending also works quite well when considering the wider narratives of the Haruspex’s route, including the future of the town, his role and sacrifice, and the metanarrative of the story.
In all three routes there lays quite a large weight on the future of the town, as of course it is the battle of the ending, of which vision of the town would become reality. The Haruspex’s bound is known as the Termites, a collection of children who learned from Isidor Burakh, Artemy Burakh’s father. Their ending is the one in which the Polyhedron is destroyed and the town stands, ready to be developed by a future generation. However, it is discovered in one of the other routes of the story, the Bachelor’s route (we will get to him later) that the source of the infection lies underneath the town, in the pockets of blood which have collected beneath. This means that the plague can never be fully defeated unless the town itself is destroyed, as the Polyhedron has already pierced the ground, meaning that there is no returning the plague to its dormant state, trapped underneath the earth. On the other hand, the other side of the river is entirely uninhibited, clean of the plague. This complete lack of prior development also means an ability to create a new town.
The new town built after the Utopian ending is one made, as the name implies, by the Utopians, however, the asymmetrical narrative changes depending on which healer is the one being currently played by the player, so following that logic, the endings would be influenced as well. This would hypothetically mean that the vision Capella has for the future of the town, one in which the Haruspex is a leader of the kin, and the town would be led by the children, could still find its place within the new town. There are also direct connections between the Utopians and Termites as well, such as Casper Kain, also known as Khan, of the termites, being a termite while also being part of the Kain family, which means that despite the rocky relationship amongst the family, he is still a heir to that power. Capella as well, is the sister of Vlad the younger, who at that point is the eldest Olgymsky remaining, and the projected leader of the town’s industry in the new town, she has also planned her engagement to Khan, meaning that she would then have a connection to Kain family as well. Apart from these direct connections, the entirety of the bound is important, each member, independent of faction, still able to impact the future of the town, and in order to achieve the Utopian ending in the Haruspex route both the Termites and Utopians must be fully healed. However these are the more hypothetical results of the ending, in the game itself the cutscene remains the same for whichever healer chooses the ending, which can imply the uniformness of the ending. However even though the Utopian ending described in differing routes can still serve the Haruspex well, the utopia described in the Bachelor route is explicitly stated to need the Earth, “…it's all about what's down below. It requires dirt. A ruby firmament needs something to sit atop-otherwise it'd topple.” This coincides well with the future Capella predicts, with the Haruspex taking his place as the foreman of the Abattoir, showing that there is, in fact, a place for the “earthly and the humane” in the new town. The connections described within the route, the needs of the utopia, and especially the influence of the Haruspex himself, would allow the Utopian ending to be a fitting future in the Haruspex route.
Another very present aspect of the Haurpsex’s route is that of his sacrifice, the idea that he must destroy, kill, something or someone in order for his ending to occur. This concept is mentioned a few times, however it is only fully explained by Katerina Saburova, “You will make a sacrifice. There will be rivers of blood, and that will be your doing.” While I can go into a whole other essay about the ideas of the sacrifice (and I do), we will for this essay’s sake, take the sacrifice as it’s surface level in pathologic classic, and how it’s implications mean that choosing the Utopian ending would have better long-term effects and also complete the Haruspex’s journey.
The Haruspex’s story follows a more classical hero’s journey rather than the Bachelor’s tragedy, with the abattoir symbolising the other world, and Oyun assigning the quite literal trials the Haruspex must go through. Once the Haruspex defeats the Foreman and becomes the new Foreman of the abattoir, however, he is still not respected by the butchers, who require a sacrifice from him. This duality of both the mistress’ prophecy and the requirement of the butchers also shines a light on the Haruspex in Pathologic Classic, someone who knows that he is of two worlds, however also a person who takes pride in both of them, and brings them together.
In the Termite ending the sacrifice is not fulfilled, the Haruspex is not allowed access to the blood, the plague looms as a remaining threat, and the Polyhedron still falls, for nothing.
Unlike in Pathologic 2, where the Polyhedron is quite literally piercing through the heart of the Earth, slowly killing her, in classic it is nowhere near that fatal, still harmful, but not fatal..  This important distinction is also important to make with the fact that while the blood would still seep out from the open wound if the tower were to fall, it would be limited, and would dry out at some point, while on the other hand, completing the sacrifice would allow the Haruspex access to the blood in the Earth, as the butchers would allow him to find the hidden reserves.
The sacrifice herself, Aglaya Lilich is someone already doomed by the powers that be, a doll loved by their mother and so hated by them, she dies in every ending but the Termites’. There is, of course, a point to be made about the theme of a woman having to die for a man’s journey is not a good one, and choosing this ending would feed into a harmful cliche, however, her death is something she herself understands, and although she urges the Haruspex not to make it, she acknowledges that she is meant to be the sacrifice, that choosing this choice will be enough, “If you lead him to victory, you may consider your sacrifice made. You return to the exultant butchers, triumphant.” Her death is not regarded as a simple shock factor to the end of the story, it is the pivotal choice the Haruspex must make. This is also shown in the Changeling route, where saving Aglaya is seen as an act of deceit, as even Clara’s ending, which saves the town, requires Aglaya to die, as Aglaya is a ‘queen’ an important piece on the board at the end of the game, her life only allows for the Termite ending, only allows for the Haruspex to lose his standing within the kin, and only allows for the sacrifice of the Polyhedron.
The Polyhedron is viewed as the sacrifice in the case that the Haruspex seeks to save Aglaya, however would it even work as one? The sacrifice needed is one of equal value to the Udurgh, the body that contains the world, and if the Utopian route is the one followed, the Udurgh is Simon Kain, and so the sacrifice must be someone who is more than human, and yet human. The Polyhedron, on the other hand, contains no human element, yet, it is the container for a human soul, a chimaera of living and nonliving, however in the Termite ending it is empty, and therefore cannot serve as sacrifice. Both Katerina and Capella’s opinions support the Bachelor’s argument in favour of the Polyhedron standing as well, Katerina outright claiming that “ I know for sure that you are to destroy a woman…” However, seeing that Katerina’s prophecies are often wrong, this statement must be taken with a pinch of salt. On the other hand, Capella clarifies that while Simon is merely a man in the current time, however, “Had Simon been reborn though, had he transferred his spirit to a new vessel-a body huge, perfect, and able to let others in... then he could have been called that.” Well, that rebirth, that new vessel she describes just so happens to match up incredibly well to the Polyhedron, this means that for the Udurgh to exist, for the Haruspex to fulfil his purpose, he must let the Polyhedron stand, must let Simon become the Udurgh. These ideas of sacrifice, of fate, and most importantly, of duty and purpose, greatly define the Haruspex’s story, and the Utopian ending is the only ending which gives it the needed satisfaction by its end.
All of the prior points about the town and the sacrifice have been made with the greatest levels of constraint I was able to amount, this paragraph, admittedly, will be much more personal, as the reasoning it presents was the initial reason for my appreciation of this ending. Simply saying, this paragraph will discuss this ending and the Haruspex’s connections, specifically the connection to the Bachelor. This entire essay could have been written only about this, specific subject, however, there was much more to be said about this ending, and the exercise in restraint was appreciated,  despite the, challenges (No Zero I cannot give into the g urges early, fruit.) This paragraph will discuss the relationship between the Bachelor and the Haruspex (of course) as well as the metanarrative of Pathologic classic, especially when it comes to the ends and in considering the Bachelor route in comparison to the Haruspex one.
During the Bachelor run, there is not a single chance to access the abandoned workshop the Haruspex works in, even trying to teleport into the workshop will fail, This comes with the precedent that as the Bachelor, you will not meet the Haruspex until the fifth day, from which point on he is only truly present for days 5,8,9, and of course, day 12. This is of course, a great disservice and the Pathologic 2 route should really have more Haruspex in it, however on a less tangential point, it a great difference from the haruspex route, in which the Bachelor appears for almost every single day of the playthrough, The Bachelor is likely to be the character the player interacts with the most, and over the game the connection between the two characters grows over time, with the Bachelor switching to use Artemy Burakh’s first name. However this closeness between the two is present throughout the entirety of the route, from the very first line the Bachelor speaks to the Haruspex (We will get to that later) to even the descriptions of quests and locations which the Haruspex takes note of, even I was surprised at just how much there was between these two in my first playthrough. All that builds to the point in which these two characters, at the very least, care for one another, deeply enough that the Haruspex has multiple dialogue options which are explicitly supportive of the Utopian ending within his Cathedral discussion with the Bachelor, with all but two of the dialogue branches allowing him to ask the Bachelor for his advice, and only one serving as a direct rejection. And that is what choosing the Termites ending in the Haruspex route is, a rejection, all throughout the route the Bachelor will attempt to convince the Haruspex of the validity of his ending, and in the Haruspex route, the Utopian ending is incredibly tied to the Bachelor, to Daniil Dankovsy, with the implication that if tower, if the last remainder of his research will not survive, that neither will he. Much like Aglaya, his fate is tied to the aspect of the town he is bound to protect. The Bachelor, who, while still placed as more antagonistic, still has his choice, his option for the ending still weighed as equally as the Inquisitor’s, the story places them as equals, “Two diverging pairs of decisions. Both pre-determined…” Which also clarifies that the Utopian ending was never less free than the Termite one, as they are both pre-written, scripted.
This leads into another extremely important aspect of Pathologic Classic HD, the meta, not only can you be reminded twice per round that the story is not real, but multiple characters and scenarios note that this is still a game, still a story the player is playing a part of. A big part of the meta story is the fact that the town is in fact, a sandbox, and the characters are merely dolls. The Polyhedron is a water container which was stuck into the sand, and the water within it had caused a mold, causing the sand pest within the reality of the characters. Removing the tower would help nothing; the mold has already spread, the only option forward is to remove the sand, or play somewhere else, which is what the destruction of the town means, the Utopian ending is the only one which actually, truly addresses this.
Another very meta aspect of the story is the relationship between the Haruspex and Bachelor, which is seen in the very first line spoken from the Bachelor to the Haruspex. The order the game suggests the routes is to begin with Bachelor, continue to Haruspex, and end with Changeling, and viewing the story as one continuous thing in that order adds a lot of depth to the story, with, “ Yes... Far be it from me to call myself a person of mystical inclinations. However, when I look at you, I get the feeling that nature is playing jokes on us. It's as if both the left and the right hand have clutched the head to realise for the first time that they are two parts of a single whole.” The Bachelor quickly disarms the player, not only is this statement a clear representation of the fact that they are two parts of a single whole, they are all healers, all part of the role the player plays, but this line is just plain out not something to say to someone you just met. Dankovsky continues his, less than normal interactions towards the Haruspex throughout the route, to the point that two of them have the closest connection here than almost any other two characters in any route, to the point even the developers themselves reflect upon it in that same dialogue I mentioned before, “Two diverging pairs of decisions… And then, you see, there were also feelings involved... Love.” While this can be applied to Aglaya instead, in the context of the conversation, which is Clara asking the developers about the two other healers specifically, that simply would not make sense. There is a lot more textual and meta evidence about these two, but I am straying off course too much already and this paragraph is already very very long, so we will just move swiftly back to the actual point of the essay :) (BUT YES I COULD WRITE A WHOLE ENTIRE THING ABOUT HOW DANIIL IS WRITTEN AS A LOVE INTEREST IN THIS ROUTE)
Let us not forget, however, a reason as to why the Bachelor wishes to destroy the town, and that is that Daniil is incredibly petty and jealous of Aglaya, from the initial curiosity at their initial meeting, “...She was so impressed by your dignified demeanour … What did you tell her that touched her so much?” To the outright spiteful, “My dear Burakh, she is your sacrifice! I don't think it is at all necessary to slit her throat with your own knife … if the town is destroyed, the head of Aglaya Lilich will be separated from her shoulders in less than a day.” He also partially agrees with Artemy that he seeks to keep the Polyhedron out of spite. However one must take into consideration the Bachelor’s route, in which he is consistently used and betrayed, the biggest offender being the Inquisitor herself. The only person who does not do so is the Haruspex, so it makes sense he would do quite literally anything to keep that being the case.
The fact is, Daniil Dankovsky suffers, in almost every single ending he is not at a good place, all of the endings from his own route for one, as that route is quite literally a tragedy, as well as the fact that Eva is dead in it, that also goes for Changeling route endings, as well as the fact that in that route he is in general incapable of a happy ending, which only leaves the Haruspex’s route for him to have any possibility of contentment (sorry g boy) Immediately we can also rule out the Termite ending in the Haruspex route, and in the Humbles ending he is the only one without a place, the Haruspex, as the Foreman, would still have a role to play, but Daniil would not, her victory is also the least rational one, and therefore, the hardest one for him to agree with. That leaves, of course, one ending, the Haruspex route Utopian ending, in which the Bachelor is not left in misery.
Other than that, this ending, just like all endings in which the player picks the ending of the bound other than their healers’ is a direct victory over fate, over the ‘set’ ending for the route. The executor, the stand-in for the developers in the ending of the game says as much, “The only enemy, the only evil in this story, you see, is called Inevitability…” This also lends itself to the idea that the belief that there is only one ‘right’ ending for each healer, that they should only be considered by their bound’s choice, is a wrong one. This refusal of fate, refusal of the ending implied to be the ‘correct’ choice of the Haruspex since the very beginning of the game, is the ultimate victory of the player, and of the characters with them.
In almost all discussion of the Pathologic endings, the only possibilities considered are the ones given, each healer choosing their own bound’s end, but Pathologic is far more dynamic than that. The story is asymmetrical, and so are its endings, which is why Bachelor’s route Utopian ending is quite possibly the most tragic, hopeless one, and the Haruspex route one is the complete opposite. There is no ‘good’ ending, of course, no, that would be too simple, however, there are some which are clearly better than others, and due to the future of the town, the impact this has on the Haruspex’s story, and arguably most importantly, the meta and interconnected aspects of this ending, it can be considered as a good ending. It is a belief that the Utopian ending in any context, is a bad one, however, in the words of the Haruspex himself, “Any choice is right as long as it’s willed.”

Main Info of my BNHA Hogwarts AU series
Hello! This will be quite a masterlist to understand the main world around the “(In)feliciter, sentio me a te fascinatum esse praesertim” series on AO3. Here I will put all characters’ houses/roles and some other points I need to make clear. Their status as Muggle-born, half-blood and pureblood is actually not so relevant (except for some characters), but I still wanted to add it. Just a little note: in every installment I will repeat these details if they are important in that story – like, what is UA in the first installment, or Todoroki’s Hogwarts house in the second et cetera – but surely having them all listed in one place might be more comfortable for all readers.
As said in the first installment, the students in class 1-A and 1-B in the BNHA universe are all part of this “pre-Aurors” program (UA, aka “Union of pre-Aurors), which was born due to the Minister of Magic’s (Yeah, Wash, just for pure meme power) and the Head of the Auror Office’s (Endeavour, after All Might’s retirement) request. The League of Villains here is kind of a new group of Death Eaters that still quite worships the previous evil mages even after literal centuries from their departure. I don’t know if I’ll ever make a more “action-centered” installment, since I am really bad at writing “heavier” stuff, but this would be the enemy the students would face.
Again, as I mentioned in the first part, everyone must choose a nickname due to this rise of this organization to cover as much as possible their identities. So I will use the hero names the characters chose in the manga. Though even just some teachers (like Ectoplasm) preferred, for personal reasons, to mention only a nickname to the students too. In this case, just Nezu (Hogwarts’s headmaster) is aware of their real name. This was mostly needed due to some Heroes in BNHA who still don’t have a real name reveal. Regarding names, yes, the students will mostly use the surnames to call each other, and change only when they are really close to that one person, just like in canon. Considering the others use Harry’s surname too in the books, I thought that even here it could work. Also, maintaining that beautiful use of the first name in Japanese makes everything more special.
The course begins in the fifth year and ends in the seventh, it lasts two hours per session and there are four lessons each week. Due to its practicality and privacy, the Room of Requirement is the place where the course is attended, and only “Aurors in training”, Vlad, Aizawa and Joke know what they have to think about to make the class appear. The classroom is divided in two big parts, one for more “theoretical” studies and the other for dueling/sparring. Yeah, because I still can’t think that Aurors don’t get basic physical training in the books – okay that there is magic, but if you don’t have the wand for whatever reason, sometimes even a good punch can do wonders. No, this is not an excuse to create some sparring tension. Another note: the classroom (A and B) still remains, because, well, teaching forty students at once might be a tough challenge. Though, sometimes the two classes do lessons together anyway, especially dueling ones.
All the adults that in BNHA were pro heroes are now or teachers or Aurors. This doesn’t apply only to UA professors who are both (for the UA obviously the Ministry choose Aurors still in duty to teach the students). Camie, Inasa and Shishikura will appear later on. Camie is a Beauxbatons student, while the others study at Durmstrang. In my fic these two schools are now even more “affiliated” with the other, since the two headmasters are married. Camie is still a year older than the others, but due to some of her “problems” that will be explained in one of my fanfics in this series, she began going to school a year later than normal.
Regarding students with particular physical features (Ojirou’s tail, Hagakure’s invisibility, et cetera) they obviously disappear here, at least mostly. Hagakure for example loves Invisibility Cloaks and wears them frequently to prank others a little bit. Ojirou is an Animagus – so, well, his tail appears when he transforms – and Mina keeps his pink hair color due to her Metamorphmagus status. Though, these and other characters’ details (such as the reasons for their Auror name) will be included in the appropriate installments.
Now, here’s the whole list!

Hoo U?
A spirited discussion is raging on Facebook now, the good kind of spirited discussion, an enthusiastic exchange of ideas and ideals, not a snark fest.
The top is a deceptively simple one:  Who are the characters various actors played?
Let me clarify:   It began as a trivia challenge to name actors who have won Oscars for playing the same character.
And there in lays the debate.
How exactly are we defining a character.
This all sounds trivial, and to be frank this part of the discussion is, but it’s gonna get deep by the end.
Trust me.
So here’s the kickoff:
Marlon Brando won a Best Male Performance Oscar for playing Vito Corleone in The Godfather; Robert DeNiro won a Best Male Supporting Performance Oscar for playing Vito Corleone in The Godfather II
Heath Ledger won a Best Male Supporting Performance Oscar for playing the Joker in The Dark Knight; Joaquin Phoenix won a Best Male Performance Oscar for playing the Joker in Joker.
(Trivia bonus: Kate Winslet and Gloria Stuart received Oscar nominations for playing the same character at different stages of her life in Titanic, and Winslet and Judi Dench were both nominated for playing the same character at different stages in Iris as well; plus Peter O’Toole was nominated twice for playing Henry II in Beckett and The Lion In Winter which technically counts as a sequel…)
The Facebook debate is over whether Ledger and Phoenix were actually playing the same character.
Now in the case of the former, The Godfather II is a continuation of the same story in The Godfather by the same creative team with much of the original cast reprising their roles, the Oscars going to two actors who played the same character at different stages of their life (BTW, where's the love for Oreste Baldini, who played Vito as a young boy?).
The two films were re-edited and combined with The Godfather III to make a nine-hour and 43-minute miniseries The Godfather Trilogy.
It is clear the creators’ intent from the beginning was for audiences to accept Baldini / DeNiro / Brando as the same person at various stages of his life.
The Ledger Joker and the Phoenix Joker cannot possibly be the same character for a wide variety of internal continuity issues separating the two films.  The creators of Joker went out of their way to state their version of the character was not The Dark Knight version.
Unlike The Godfather movies, you can’t link up the various live action Batman / Suicide Squad / Joker stories into a single coherent narrative (especially since you have to drag in the live action Supeman and Wonder Woman movies and TV shows as well).
. . .
Can different actors play their version of the same character in otherwise unlinked productions?
Of course they can.
Stage plays do it all the time.
If you start with the same exact text, then clearly any number of actors can play Hamlet or MacBeth or Willy Loman.
The problems arise when one goes afield of the text.
. . .
In 1932 Constance Bennett made a movie called What Price Hollywood? that did okay but really didn’t set the world on fire.
In 1937 Janet Gaynor remade that film as A Star Is Born, the story changed to give it a tragic yet uplifting conclusion; her version was a big hit and Gaynor received an Oscar nomination.
In 1954 Judy Garland remade A Star is Born as a musical and that proved a big hit, and Garland received an Oscar nomination.
In 1976 Barbara Streisand took a swing at the material with a country-western version of A Star Is Born and while she got an Oscar nomination, audiences were unreceptive.
In 2018 Lady Gaga remade A Star Is Born and received both an Oscar nomination for her role and an Oscar win for her song.
Question: Are they all playing the same character?  Each played a character that started their film with a different name than the other versions, but the Gaynor / Garland / Streisand / Gaga versions all end with the central character proudly proclaiming they are “Mrs. Norman Maine.”
Same character?
. . .
There’s no argument that William Gillette, Basil Rathbone, and Benedict Cumberbatch all played Sherlock Holmes, even when their productions took certain liberties with the stories.
But Sherlock Holmes is not an idiot, and Michael Caine played Holmes as an idiot in Without A Clue.
Was he playing the same character as Gillette / Rathbone / Cumberbatch?
(Ironically Peter Cook played a very recognizable and wholly credible Holmes in his farcical send up of The Hound Of The Baskervilles with Dudley Moore.)
Did George C. Scott play Holmes in They Might Be Giants?  Almost everybody else in the story thinks he’s a New York banker who’s suffered a nervous breakdown and only thinks he’s Holmes, but Scott believes he is Holmes 100% and throughout the film other people he encounters accept him as Holmes at face values.
He functions as Holmes throughout.
And in the end, the audience is left in a weird place, not really knowing what his fate may be, not absolutely sure if he is a bonkers banker but maybe…somehow…he is Sherlock Holmes…
. . .
Did John Cassavettes in Tempest and Walter Pidgeon in Forbidden Planet play the same character?  Were either of those roles Shakespeare’s Prospero?
Did Christopher Lee play the same character in Horror Of Dracula and its sequels, in Count Dracula, and in In Search Of Dracula?   (The producers of Count Dracula sure went to great pains to explain their version was a different and more accurate version than the Hammer version of the character, and In Search Of Dracula cast Lee as Vlad Tepes who was the real life historical figure Bram Stoker based his novel on.)
For that matter, is Count Orlok in Nosferatu:  A Symphony Of Terror actually Dracula?  A European court awarding lawsuit damages to Bram Stoker's widow sure thought so.
Along similar lines, was Bela Lugosi playing Dracula in Columbia's Return Of The Vampire? Universal's lawyers sure thought so.
Did Jim Caviezel in Passion Of The Christ, Max von Sydow in The Greatest Story Ever Told, Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke, and Michael Rennie in The Day The Earth Stood Still all play the same character?
Did Toshiro Mifune, Clint Eastwood, and Bruce Willis all play the Continental Op?
Did Clint Eastwood play the same character in all three Dollar films?
Did Vincent Price, Charlton Heston, and Will Smith all play the same character?
Did Leonardo DiCaprio play the same character Steve McQueen played in The Great Escape (even if just for one brief scene) or did he play a character who played a character Steve McQueen played in The Great Escape?
Ooh, here's a good one!
Lon Chaney Jr starts Ghost Of Frankenstein playing the same monster Boris Karloff played in the original Frankenstein / Bride Of Frankenstein / Son Of Frankenstein trilogy, but by the end gets Ygor's brain (Bela Lugosi) transplanted into his body and speaks / thinks / acts briefly as Ygor in Frankie’s body.
However, Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman while maintaining continuity with all four previous films cast Lugosi as the monster (because Chaney had to play the Wolfman, duh) without dialog.  Glenn Strange then assumed the role again in continuity with all previous films for House Of Frankenstein, House Of Dracula, and Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, occasionally speaking briefly in the role.
Who was Strange playing in his films?  The original Karloff monster or Ygor in Frankie's bod?  Are those two distinct characters?
. . .
All the above is fun trivia to debate, but it links to a much more serious question:  Who are you?
That’s not a trivial matter.  What constitutes out identity?  What makes us who we are?
I lost my father years ago to Alzheimer’s.  As my brother Robert observed, the only member of a family not affected by an Alzheimer’s diagnosis is the person suffering from it themselves.
I would talk to my father on the phone, and he was always pleasant and cheery, but about three years before he died I realized he had no idea who I was, I was just some voice on the other end of the line that mom wanted him to talk to.
My father was by nature and easy going kinda guy, and that certainly made his last few years easier for my mother and brother Rikk to cope with, but one night when I was visiting, trying to get their affairs straightened out so he could enter a nursing home, he got irritated with my mother as she was trying to help him and raised his hand as if to slap hers away.
My father never raised his hand against my mother.
Ever.
He taught me and my brothers that was something no real man ever did.
He might sound gruff on occasion but he never raised a finger, much less truck our mother.
The fact he did so in the throes of Alzheimer’s indicated that whoever he once was, he wasn’t that person anymore.
We got him into a nursing home and he lasted a little less than a year there, his mind and his memory and his personality deteriorating rapidly.
Who was he at the end?
I didn’t go to his funeral.
What was the point?
The father I knew and loved had departed long before they buried his shell.
My grandmother, on the other hand, remained her cranky, irascible self until a week and a half before she died, finding the wit to crack one last memorable joke before her body began shutting down.
. . .
The question of identity is related to consciousness, and these are referred to as “the hard question” by physicians and physicists and philosophers alike.
What makes us “us”?
How do we know who we are?
What constitutes identity?
There are no easy, pat answers.
We have textbook definitions that dance around the issue of identity and consciousness, providing enough of a foundation for us to recognize what it is we’re discussing, but no one has yet come up with a clear, concise explanation of what either phenomenon is.
It’s like saying “apples are a red fruit.”
Okay, we know what you’re talking about, but we also know that description falls far, far short of what an apple actually is.
That’s why trivial discussion like whether or not Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix are playing the same character is a lot more important than it seems.
(BTW, they aren’t. Phoenix won his Oscar for his version of the Rupert Pupkin character in a violent remake of The King Of Comedy.)

A bit of lore and backstory
(snippet of the ninth chapter of my unfinished unpublished fanfic in the classical trope of “let me put as much info as possible compressed into a tiny dialogue”)
not beta-read/ written on a tired mind/ english is not my native language/ my list of excuses goes on and on...
Word count: 1.7k
It was at times like these when Pheebe noticed that she was way too emotional to do her job the way it should be done. Binding her hair back into a loose ponytail she threw an exhausted glare at the blonde aristocrat who barely lifted his eyes from the book he was currently reading. A if they did not just have a war council, as if death itself was not waiting just around the gates.
“Vlad this is serious. If we want to survive this we have to work together, we have to talk like normal people.”
He turned the page, uninterested. ‘What the fuck was so important, he had to read it now?!’
“I will survive this, I’ve been through worse. And you are just food to us. A blood bag to satisfy Ivan’s needs. Why should I treat you, like you are anything special?”
Pheebe wanted to scream and flee the room. Hadn’t Vladimir disagreed to listen to her plan, they would already be all on their way to a safe place. But no, instead he was clinging to this mansion. They had more important things to take care of. And for once, she knew that Beliath would agree.
This is not about me. It is about Mary. About Ethan. Both are on the edge of death and you talk about waiting and planning”
He turns another page. But she saw the hand that held the book upright tighten against the Bordeaux hardcover. He took a deep breath to maintain his poise, before speaking with the certainty of a head of house, no room for discussion: “Ethan will manage, and if your friend doesn’t make it we can still share her blood, drain her before the battle. But we will not run into a confrontation unprepared!”
The last drop broke the barrel. How dares he even suggest using Mary in such a gruesome way? How dares he put organization above life. And at once, the words poured out before she could stop them. “I cannot understand how you can live with yourself, let alone how other people can live with you. You only care about yourself, don’t you? You don’t give a damn about the suffering of others”.
A reaction. He looked up. There was shock in his eyes, as well as a tiny warning of the storm that was rioting in his thoughts. Through tiny slits and gritted teeth he growled at her.
“You have no idea what it’s like to be immortal. Have you ever watched everyone you care about die, with nothing that you could do to stop it? You know nothing of pain and suffering!” His voice became louder and louder until, at the end, he was screaming in rage, at such a volume that Pheebe was sure, even Ivan in his room two floors above them, could hear every single word. She did not fear his anger, and he was powerless to lift his hand against her. At last, she got what she wanted and he was no longer as emotional as a stone. But he would not guilt trip her with a sad back-story or the typical “I-am-a-poor-misunderstood-immortal”-farce. Eyes hard, she brought her face closer to the blond man’s, who backed away in irritation.
“Do you know what it feels like to drive a knife through the heart of the person you love?”
At first he was taken aback by the question. Then a condescending smirk appeared on his face “Oh, yes, go on. Tell me the story of the vampire that fell in love with a hunter and gets staked down in return.”
Patience! She told herself. Think of him as a child that questions the whole world. “He was sick. Do you know what bloodlust does to a vampire?” His discomfort became more and more apparent. His eyes danced over her face on the search for some kind of weakness. She felt the threatening waves that he tried to sent off, but once again she thanked Miss Ginaldi’s team for her training. Not many Vampires have encountered bloodlust and survived it. None of the ones that Pheebe had known, at least. ”Incurable, it turns him into a feral beast, with no recognition of anything but blood.”
“How do you know that it was bloodlust? Maybe He attacked you because he just found out what you are and-“
“Because I was there when he caught it. I was there when he fought it.”, every word was pressed out with anger and frustration about Vlad’s stubbornness. About his way of denying anything he didn’t want to see or hear. “He always hoped that maybe it would go away. And he trusted me to step in if it didn’t. Because he knew who I was from the very beginning, or rather, who I was supposed to be.”
“That’s what vampires get for trusting a hunter.” Voice cold, face empty.
His expression remained calm and neutral, there was not one muscle that gave a sign of consideration, no empathy left for her words and it made her fume. Pheebe had tears brimming on her lashes, so short of falling to his ignorance. But her anger was without cause. Vlad could not have known, there was nothing he knew about her but her name and the fact, that she did not like him.
“I wasn’t a hunter back then. I was just…” she searched for a suitable word, an attempt to justify the unjustifiable, “an employee who wanted to help maintain peace.” But then her emotions dropped as pictures flashed in her memory, vivid as if she was at that place once again. Laughs, smiles, congratulations. Hands ruffling through her hair and telling her that it was time she grew up to the expectations.  So much positivity over a lost life. “You cannot imagine how proud my family was when they found us, when they saw what I have done. I don’t even know why I had that dagger with me in the first place. I swore to never touch these damned murder instruments!”
They were both breathing hard with keeping this discussion on a verbal level. The need to shake the pale boy was stagnant in Pheebes chest. Meanwhile Vlad has stood up to put his book back into the shelf, as it was apparent he would not be reading in peace with the hysterical girl in the library. Eyeing her from bottom to top his voice turned almost soothingly intrigued: “A Vampire willingly associated with someone who was connected to the circle?”
The facepalm was only mental. Of cause Vladimir would not know how the circle worked. For most of the vampire population it would remain a secret for all of their drawn-out lifetime. Meanwhile, for others, well…
“There were many vampires who worked with or for us, some voluntarily, some not.“ To sum up the whole picture Pheebe went for both extremes: “some came to council meetings, others were chained up and starving in the basement… With all those doors that my parents opened for me, to proudly present my new future, with that blood on my hands I could no longer play friends with your kind. I started my training so I can bring hope to those who don’t deem themselves worthy of it. I have saved almost fourty vampires, and it was never necessary to shed even a drop of blood for them to cooperate. Maybe they felt that I was a little like them, damned from the depth of my blood. A curse that already shows on my hands.”
Once it was pronounced the black eyes of the vampire scanned her arms to hind her hands unexpectedly bare. There were soft lines that faded on their way towards her elbow, as if drawn up with coal, fingerpainted with ashes of burned purity and hopes.
“Is that why you wear gloves?”
Pheebe nodded. “They are so I can touch my weapons. The vampire blood in my system keeps rejecting contact with the cursed materials. But it is also what keeps me immune to hypnosis and manipulation.” This was what made this discussion so hard for Vlad. She had seen the way he talked to the humen at Nikita’s party, and felt that he instantly surrounds them with his commanding aura to get his points across more easily. But talking to her was like talking to  the other house members. Futile, if she was as closed off to his point of view, as he was to her.
“Where did you get blood from our kind?” There was a little bit of disgust in his expression. But who would blame him, for not finding the aspect of being drained of your life essence, so someone else had it easier, appealing. He had never lived on that side of the food chain after all.
Suddenly she felt like a walking tome of hunter knowledge to Vladimir’s eyes. Maybe it was the way he looked at her, with morbid interest. Just how much was he allowed to know? Or rather how long would he survive to pass that knowledge on?: “It was an integral part of my training to regularly get vampire blood and venom injected, so it does not cause  turning if I die in battle or cause hallucinations when I am bitten.”
His eyebrow rose. “The effects of vampire blood in the human system are dangerous. You never know what it might cause”
Something rang in her memory as he said that sentence. She must have heard it somewhere. Or read it in a book. There were not many objectively useful tomes about vampire blood, the only ones are lost, stolen from the hunter association’s library, written during experiments and updated regularly. The last ones who were working on the manuscript were Monsieur and Madame Martine-Blanc, or so it was told.
“You know…There were two hunters who are kind of a legend in the circles, scientist, who were obsessed by the idea that the cure to any disease could lie in the blood of the elder vampires. My instructor, Doctor Ginaldi told me about them. One night they just disappeared, and took half of the inventory with them. After searching for their whereabouts for 3 month, they gave up.” And with a tiny laugh that was only encouraged by the uneasiness on the blond vampire face, she added:” And now, twenty years later, I read their names on a doorbell in the middle of fucking nowhere. Crazy, isn’t it?”

do you believe hawks decent into villiany?you reblogged a post about it.
Do I believe hawks is going to fall into villainy? Yes.Mainly I found the whole “Hawks is going to die death flag” idea distasteful.
BNHA is a feel good series. We had Nighteye already die with his character arc resolved ending in a high note. It would be far too depressing if Hawks died with a grim conclusion of his arc;for a feel-good series having Hawks die would be gloomy end to his character arc.
The person who first mentioned this is cutiesabyle who brought up this theory and made a lot of good points about it.
In chapter 191, Hawks and Dabi’s conversation in these panels  is what made me think that Hawks is turning to the dark side. If you look at the panels his face is darkened out in them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hawk’s face covered in darkness while he’s talking to Dabi in these panels. After his conversation with Dabi when he leaves his back is swallowed up by the darkness while Dabi is walking to the light.
Tumblr media
This could refer to him falling into darkness.Hawks is compared to the fall of Icarus (the Greek myth); that why a lot of people believed he would die when they read this.
But, it’s something entirely different.This meant that Hawks will fall in a more disgraced unheroic or better yet turn into a villainy.
As hamliet described it if you see the BNHA volume 21 cover it would be this:
Tumblr media
Hamliet:Hawks has his back turned, and in front of Hawks are blue-ish flames and darkness, which seems to be again symbolic of the panel in which Hawks walked towards the darkness, perhaps foreshadowing a future fall to villainy and of course, representing the deal we know he’s struck with Dabi.
As hamliet once described about Hawks on volume 21 this could be the passage of another hint of Hawks falling into villainy and this cover foreshadows it.
Tumblr media
Having more free time may seem like he’s carefree response to Endeavor, but when you look even deeper you see a glimpse of his background.
Tumblr media
Here in the flashback  of chapter 192 of Hawks back when he was a child,  in this panel he looks to be from a impoverished background holding an Endeavor doll. The words “must become a hero” isn’t something Hawks has said. These words are from his handlers;not his words but the word of the people who leashed him.He was exploited at a young age because of his quirk and circumstances of his background:
Tumblr media
All we see that his entire life he had no choice. He was never given a choice to live freely he was never given a choice.
Hawks was no more than a tool to be exploited when he’s given are orders he can’t turn down. Hawks is very well aware this but obeys their orders.Hawks mentioned the investigation with Gran Torino: he hides in his hood when asked. He can’t talk back to his captors but instead jokes not to earn their ire.
Tumblr media
These people control Hawks. He’s treated as a tool by these people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They exploit hawks for their own convenience. Hawks is very well aware that he is essentially a captive; he knows this and he can’t escape because the people are the ones leashing him and handling his reins. Hawks is used as a sacrificial pawn by his handlers and forced to investigate the league of villains.Hawks acknowledges this, bows, and does what he thinks has to do for his goal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What does this say about hawks he was never free was never given a free choice? This has a much more deeper meaning.
Hawks is self-sacrificing by nature; perhaps too self sacrificing.His self sacrificing nature is going to rear its ugly head.
During Tokoyami internship Hawks is isolated from the rest of his sidekicks being flown too fast and to show the difference what he has gone through.
Tumblr media
Tokoyami interns with him which allows Hawks not only to get info on the USJ incident, but also shows how he sees himself in Tokoyami.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This personal moment with Hawks giving wisdom to Tokoyami: “no need for you to be on the ground.” These words reflect a part of himself that is trapped with no way out and cannot fly away.
Speaking of which, didn’t Hawk’s intern have a darkness quirk?Tokoyami who has the dark shadow quirk, which could also be a part that foreshadows his fall into villainy; the personal moment he said birds should not be confined to the ground could be another foreshadow of him flying the coop.
Hawks is a fan of Endeavor; he admires Endeavor for never giving up despite it looking impossible. This is genuine.
Tumblr media
We seen in the way he talks to Endeavor he doesn’t know that Endeavor abused his family for the sake of his entire ambition to surpass All Might. This is going to be heartbreaking when Hawks finds out what Endeavor has done to his family for his ambition. Tragically Hawks and Endeavor formed a genuine bond; finding out what he’s done will hurt him deeply–not just Hawks but Endeavor as well. The truth is going to hurt the both of them let me point something about betrayal in writing it’s done by someone you trusted the most as it says down here:
Tumblr media
is done by someone you trusted the most betrayal if its someone you trust.
Horikoshi plays around with symbolism seen when he first introduced Hawks. Who he in many ways is related to the Icarus theory with the opening quote: flys to fast for his own good. His quirk using feathers relates to the wax wings Icarus had.This is seen again when Hawks gives Endeavor his feathers to fight being burning up resembling
Tumblr media
Icarus wings when they melted from the sun. There’s an interesting detail about about Endeavor: his super move being “prominence burn” came from solar prominence. Endeavor could be the metaphorically “sun” to the theory. Hawks will burn if he gets to close to Endeavor;the whole “flying too close to the sun” would refer to how Hawks becomes too close to Endeavor.
Tumblr media
If he does, Hawks will find out the truth faster than anyone, and if he found out the truth what Endeavor has done he will get burned. The fall could mean his fall into villainy and Dabi could have something to do with it
Let’s  talk about Hawks’s character. Hawks is very carefree smiling and joking with the situation even joking around with Endeavor.He doesn’t take things too seriously when in reality he is surprising hardworking and diligent.During the Hood attack, Hawks managed to remain cool-headed in the crisis shown to be very calm in stressful situations not panicking when things got worse. Hawks is sharp and quick on the uptake, catches on faster than anyone noted by several characters. Hawks is an info leech and good at reading at people like when he works he is looking for information and he’s observant and his able to think quickly giving him the ability manipulated the situation based on the people’s characters.
Something I would like to point out about Dabi.Dabi was put in charge of the raid pulled of the forest mission.I pointed there’re a lot of holes in the plan in my post yes the plan may have a lot of things to point out but despite the forest raid only suffering three casualties and things he did not predict he completed his objective he completed his objective in capturing Katsuki.Dabi didn’t only pull off the summer camp raid he also helped the league of villains in making UA take a huge blow to its reputation hero’s protecting its own students.
Dabi achieves the same thing with Endeavor who recently became number one.He send a high end nomu Hood, a nomu stronger than the others on Endeavor succeeds in severely wounding endeavor this started to cause people to question the security of the hero society in question. Dabi drove Endeavor and Hawks into a corner. Even Hawks was greatly unsettled by this.
Tumblr media
Hawks was the one that Dabi notified about the nomu Dabi threw Hood on him and didn’t tell him that he is stronger.He set the hood nomu in a heavily populated area of the city knowing full well that hero always save the lives of others first to further drive the heroes in a corner.Dabi manipulated the situation one that Hawks didn’t predict, Hawks who is perceptive and observant was run over by Dabi. Dabi pulled all this over Hawks’ head.Dabi is the only person who gets under hawk’s skin  Dabi is the one who made Hawks lose his cool.
Here are things you need to note about Dabi. I mentioned that Dabi is not unintelligent; I stated before in his stats. Dabi’s good at seeing through people this is seen with Snatch, Eraserhead, even Shoto. During the forest raid mission Dabi distracts the pros from the league’s true objective: Dabi was keeping the heroes on their toes while the plan proceeded.
Tumblr media
He knows what makes people tick goes under people’s skins and uses that to his advantage.He attacks when they don’t retaliate like with Endeavor and Hawks weakened after the fight with hood, as seen with Snatch when he used “hero always save the lives of others first”
Tumblr media
he identifies Snatch’s weakness.
Tumblr media
He noticed that the rational Aizawa is fierce and asks if he’s gotten unders his skin:
Tumblr media
Dabi knows that Aizawa cares about his students leaving behind a cryptic message which visibly unhinged Aizawa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dabi taunts Vlad, anticipating his reaction and saying that he voicing completed his objective while driving the rest of them in a corner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dabs ran both Hawks and Shoto in circles. Shoto is very powerful,quick and smartest in his class, known to be very agile, yet Dabi catches Katsuki in front of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These attacks are done by Dabi. He pulled off two successfully He. led two of the major operations that put the league of villains in the spotlight. Dabi would is one put the league of villains in the spotlight Dabi might really have a big effect on the media as a whole. Despite his success and failure of the last two attacks he was really good at doing what he is doing. Despite being called weak he could be one of the most dangerous members that’s how deadly he is this demonstrated just how ruthless Dabi is as a villain.
What does that half to mean for the media attention for Dabi? Well in the meta liberation arc Himiko doesn’t want to be pitted by others she wants to live life her own normal way:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She never wants to die and be painted as tragic figure. Himiko doesn’t want to be used for media attention especially for the meta liberation’s army motives.
Tumblr media
Himiko’s backstory would not be seen as sympathetic I mentioned in of my posts. it won’t work since her backstory is far from sympathetic it wouldn’t be justifiable just be picked apart by critics why more quirk restriction. The meta liberation army tried to use Himiko to show the truth but unfortunately she’s not painted as a tragic lead that the meta liberation is going for as Himiko is not a sympathetic figure.
Tumblr media
Dabi and Himiko are foils when they are first introduced:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dabi seems to have the flare for the dramatics seen in the beginning of the forest raid standing on top with his opening speech.
Tumblr media
with Vlad he talks about how the league of villians already completed the objectives with abudting one of their students how the loss of faith will spread like wildfire all the while pinned down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While talking to Snatch he’s happy that he got media recognition for his burn murders:
Tumblr media
Dabi seems to be happy that he is getting more media recognition for his villainy. Himiko’s story would not garner sympathy, but Dabi’s will. Which would make his reveal being Endeavor’s son turned villain exposing Endeavor is going to cause public outrage. His story would have more media attention than Toga’s; Dabi could be painted as sympathetic, not Toga.
People said that Hawks is going to find out about Dabi’s identity; here’s the thing” he won’t.As I mentioned before Dabi ran Hawks in circles he knows something that he doesn’t and he holds something over Hawks’ head that and Dabi is incredibly ruthless he knows how to get under people’s skin. Dabi is going to spring this on Hawks in a more dramatic and unexpected way. Also Hawks’ entire situation is that he’s trapped :exploited and used since his childhood.
Hawks would be integral into finding out that Touya is Dabi in the theory. His bond with Endeavor would also serve as a focal point for his character. This would be very great narratively speaking for a hero becoming a villain. Dabi would be the one who is responsible for his fall by revealing that he is Touya Todoroki and Endeavor’s abuse.
This is why I believe Hawks will fall into villainy and why I don’t believe in the death flags but him falling into the darkness. Thanks to cutisayble that brought up this theory and allowing me to talk about it.

I love your last post with Aizawa and Toshinori so much!! Is it okay to request something based off of that post even though that was not my request? I was hoping you could add on hcs about how well Aizawa and Toshinori could move on after losing their s/o like that? How long would it take for them to live normally again and if they could ever love someone else again?
;;; w ;; my heart swells up at the notion of people wanting a sequel! Of course, I can write that angsty goodness. I hope it’s what you wanted, sorry if it isnt ; - ;
Oh, for any new readers, it’s a continuation of this angsty piece
Shouta Aizawa and Yagi Toshinori Moving On
Aizawa Shouta
Tumblr media
Being a pro-hero was a serious and dangerous profession.
Everyone who became one knew that.
You knew that… both of you did.
In a world where almost everyone has inhuman abilities, where villains and crime grew like weeds and where hundreds of thousands of heroes rose to the occasion-
It was only logical that there would be casualties.
That those shining heroes would eventually fizzle out, as All Might did.
Or they would drop like flies.
Like the way you died, bleeding out as you waited for death to take you underneath your own concrete mausoleum.
Ruled by logic and reason, Aizawa saw no choice but to move on.
But even his closest friend, Mic, was extremely concerned at the speed at which the tired pro transitioned into acceptance.
The truth of the matter was that he did grieve for you, just…in his own way.
As workers under the government, sacrificing your life for the public, many of your family members expected a visit from an empathetic official.
Many were surprised to see Shouta in their place, dressed cleanly and groomed for once.
And it was to each of your family members that Aizawa got on the ground and bowed to, giving his apologies for not only your passing.
But for his failure.
For letting you die.
Because while he was safe and sound, pinned by villains in some safe house- you lay bleeding in the darkness, chaos echoing from the outside of your rubble cage.
While the villain that held him captive gloated, your thoughts wandered, thinking about the people you would undoubtedly leave behind by the end of the day.
After that day, many of your family members wouldn’t be surprised to see Aizawa patrolling in their neighborhood or helping out where he could financially, as you were unable to do so yourself.
Taking all the blame on himself, Shouta suffered quietly, his thoughts twisting and turning in his mind as he mulled over what to do next over gin and tonics.
Whatever he did, he would have to decide soon. Time waited for no one and
By the time Izuku and the rest of the students that were caught up in the incident returned to school, Aizawa was ready to teach again.
Nothing seemed to change, but a keen eye could notice the more subtle differences in his teaching method.
Shouta was more methodical, more critical of his students than ever. Hell, he even threatened to expel Mineta once or twice.
In his mind, these kids-these students of his were the next generation. Where you and eventually, he, would fall, these new heroes would pick up where the good fight left off.
You gave your life to protect others and he wasn’t about to let that effort be wasted.
Not by any other villain, if he could help it, and certainly not by incompetent children trying to play at being pro heroes.
However, that wasn’t the only thing you gave your life for.
You died- so that Eri could live.
When he first met the girl, she looked to frightened…so scared of the world around her.
She needed to learn how to control her quirk, how to be a normal girl. What she needed was guidance.
She needed him.
And so, the pro hero adopted her.
Sort of.
She lived on the UA campus, and all the pro heroes had a hand in raising her, but no one was blind to the fact that the two were often found together, Eri finally being able to relax and touch someone without the fear of harming them.
Sometimes when his mind would drift while he lazily used his quirk on Eri, to give her the boost of confidence to shake a stranger’s hand or to go play with some of the UA students. He’d think of you.
Would you have wanted kids? Wanted Eri? He’s not too sure anymore.
But he couldn’t dwell on you for too long, it wasn’t healthy.
He needed to move on and to make sure that no one would ever have to feel the way he feels.
Or die the way you died that terrible night.
Yagi Toshinori
Tumblr media
All Might was expected to retire, once everyone had seen his form.
Hell, even if he didn’t weaken in front of the entirety of Japan, All Might would have retired.
After all, he failed you.
He watched the one person he truly, dearly loved get torn open by some abomination of science.
Even when he was being pulled into the hospital for recuperation and recovery, all he could think about was that expression you had on your face the moment the nomu sunk its claws into you.
The fear, the type of fear everyone experiences before they die.
The exact same type of fear that Yagi works so hard to prevent.
So while the media’s fanfare celebrates his victory, while his students cheer from the comfort of their homes.
While his own protege panicked over his destiny of becoming the next #1 hero, All Might wallowed in his own failures.
The pro in him screamed to move on, to stay strong- a pillar for others to lean upon.
But he wasn’t a pillar anymore, was he?
During his recovery, he visited your family and gave his condolences, their anguish almost being too much for his bleeding heart.
Having loved you while you were still alive so passionately, All Might was at a standstill without you.
Unable to drink his darker woes away like Aizawa could, All Might instead sought comfort in the only other way he could.
His friends.
Due to having to keep his quirk and secret identity a secret, All Might didn’t have many friends to turn to. However, once your death was announced, he did notice that his coworkers stepped up to help where they could.
Mic gifted him some albums of soothing music that he fished out of his music library at home.
Aizawa took over grading papers for him, believing that his help was far more effective than giving him something that he might not even use.
Nezu allowed All Might to take some time off to grieve and even when the former pro declined the offer, he did appreciate the sentiment.
Sir Nighteye even sent a small letter of condolence to his former teacher, formal and to the point. But considering their relationship prior to your death, it was a gift that All Might treasured.
But all the gifts and assistance in the world didn’t seem to have much of an effect on the former pro, Yagi only smiling politely and maintaining his strong facade before leaving out of the room.
He didn’t need support.
Not this particular kind of support.
So one night, as school was closing, Nezu made a quick announcement for all students to remain indoors tonight. At all times. No exceptions.
It was a confusing demand, but none of the students questioned the request.
All Might decided to take the chance to leave work early and get some drinks with Naomasa, wanting to catch up with the old detective.
Sitting alone in one of his friend’s favorite dives, Yagi sat and occupied his time by watching the notifications on his phone.
A robbery five miles away.
A hostage situation a few cities away.
A hit and run, the next prefecture.
But as if he could do anything but watch and pray that help would arrive soon.
Then Naomasa arrived, just in time to save Yagi from his thoughts.
But he wasn’t alone.
Mic was dragging Aizawa long by his capture weapon, Nezu seated on the scruffy man’s shoulder.
Midnight was dressed in more casual attire, along with 13.
It seemed that all the hero teachers had arrived along with his closest friend.
And it didn’t take much for the former pro to realize…
They were here for him.
All squeezed together in their booths, with wider heroes like Vlad opting to sit at the bar stool across from the table, the conversation started off light.
How was your day? Did you see the new support items released yesterday? How are your students?
All Might cracked a small smile, a sincere one that the whole room appreciated it.
Mic snatched up Aizawa’s wallet, much to the irritation of the tired 30-year-old, as he paid off the bartender to ensure that they’d be the only ones in the shop for the time being.
And as the boss, Nezu happily paid for everyone’s drinks and food.
Once the small talk died down, Aizawa was the first to speak up, unafraid of telling the truth.
“All Might.”
“U-Uh, yes? What is it, Aizawa?”
“Don’t you want to talk about it?”
“About…what?”
“About them.”
Deciding to make up for how forward Aizawa was, Mic patted the fail skeleton-like man on his back
“It might make you feel better, you know! All that negative energy’s no good!”
The side chatter died down as everyone’s gaze softened a little at the broken man, twiddling with his thumbs.
Nemuri than spoke up, asking a rather small, inconsequential question.
“So…how did you meet?”
The soft laugh that escaped All Might was a big relief to everyone around him, everyone listening in as he retold stories of his love for you and the experiences you two had together.
Sure, it was difficult for him to imagine a life without you.
And while it was hell to live in a life without you…
Your memory would forever be cherished in the stories he told of you as for once, Toshinori leaned on others for support in his time of need.

Storming castle werewolf
with a lot less storming and a lot more ‘how do I  manipulate everyone and not get ourselves killed’
Entering town Wolf-Wolf paws at his nose and is unable to follow the scent anymore. While Nitahn takes Wolf Wolf around the marketplace to see if he can catch any scents while Vera and Oz find a room for the night and board the donkeys. After Nitahn doesn’t find anything he finds the inn, where Vera and Oz have found out that there’s been a lot of travelers in the area, and that there’s been a lot of activity at the castle. The group has dinner (Vera nearly losing her hand to offering Wolf Wolf some meat) and they head to bed.
The next morning they again get out around town, heading to the church for a bit. Nothing evil there, but they slightly interupt service when they bring in a wolf and a fucking horse (since Steve has again hidden his horn) into the building. After Nitahn makes sure there’s not a wedding ceremony happneing because oz has him so paranoid he just leaves. After a bit more searching the town and asking about Nitahn’s ‘brother’ they head up to the castle to try and get an audience. A man comes from the castle to ask them their business, to which Vera replies that they’re there to pay respect to the family on their way through the area, and that they have family business to discuss. After he leaves after promising to pass along the information Vera feins that she’s made a faux paus and didn’t ask for his name. He’s Hanz the younger, the younger sibling of the Schwarzesholz family. Vera introduces the party as the Isha group, earning herself ‘We ain’t never heard no Isha clan’ “Then I’m doing my job right.”.
They head to the inn for the night, and the next day Oz starts annotating the letter from Vera’s husband and realizes that he’s kind of written a reply. He asks her if he can write her husband and Vera says of course he can. Her husband is brilliant, but he doesn’t make friends easily and he’d enjoy someone to talk magic with. She starts trying to teach Wolf-Wolf to ‘take it nice’ when it comes to eating food, but doesn’t get much headway. After patting his ears she tells him his fur is weird, then remarks to Oz that she doesn’t really have much experience with animals. Her husband has a cat that’s 28 years old, though. Oz scores a good knowledge nature roll to know that’s unreasonably old for a cat. That, with the additional information from the letter that focused on Necromany questions and how Vera both fears undead and has an interest in anything creepy/vampire skeletons, Oz has a suspicious that her husband is a necromancer.
A letter comes for the party, and when Vera realizes it’s gibberish she hands it over to Nitahn, who can read it for traveler’s cant. It’s from Fyodora, and she says that there’s a back pathway into the castle and if they come after dark she’ll be able to meet with them, because she’s up in the keep. So the party gets ready, Nitahn taking a bath to make himself nice and Vera harassing him while he’s taking the bath. “Are we friends, Havilah?” “not right now we’re not!”
After asking Steve if he wants to come to the party sets out, going along a quiet cliffside path until they get to a dead end. Nitahn knocks a few times, and a footman opens the door. He leads them through the castle, Steve following after. The group passes by a corridor that smells heavily of death and decay. The Footman explains that’s where they keep the remains of those who don’t take the change. It gives a somber sort of feel as the group follows in the castle.
At a point the footman leaves them, giving direction on where to go from there. Vera asks him if he’ll be okay, and the footman says he’ll be fine if no one catches him. Vera advises him to go back to Steve if he’s in danger, as Steve had to hang back in a more narrow passage. They continue towards where they were told to go, Nitahn’s enlightened ring fading when they’re almost at the wall. So in pitch darkness they push forward, Nitahn knocking on the wall.
A hidden passage opened and there’s Vlad staring out at the group unimpressed. Vera leans to the side and gives him a shit eating grin at the sight of his eye, which while still there now has a scar over it. “Hey.” She says and Vlad grunts unhappily. After a moment though Fyodora is there and Nitahn squeezes past Vlad to check in on her. She’s fine, dressed well. Vlad’s also dressed a lot better.
Surprisngly blows don’t happen and the group is willing to listen to Vlad and Fyodora to learn what’s happened. Vlad had been sent to grab Fyodora and bring her south, because the head of the clan is trying to consolodate power and build up forces in the wake of rumors of Von Rothrine strength waning. Juno, previousy married into the Vodyvolk clan, sent her son Vlad north to find a specific halfblood. Bastard daughter to the pack leader of the Vodyvolk, a girl who’d been passed on after birth to a group of Travelers. Fyodora is Vlad’s half sister. Due to her high status and worth, Juno has yet to marry her off like she has several others. The ones that possesed the ability to slightly control their wolf form when they were infected were inducted into the family, and all that didn’t posses the ability to change are in the cellars.
Vlad pops an additional prerequesite to the plan: there are six others waiting for the full moon to be infected and face the change. He wants them all out, because traveling with Fyodora and getting to know her has helped him realize that this plan is a horrible plan. Vera asks if he’ll face reprecussions for this and he’s basically like ‘if I’m caught, yeah’ because being the son of the effective ruler of the pack doesn’t mean a lot if you betray the pack. Vera’s like ‘well, we’ll have to get you out too then’. They have some banter, with Vera being like ‘Hi, daddy issues. I’m also daddy issues.” which earns a laugh from Vlad.
They (and I mean Vera, Oz has started to harass Nitahn) as Vlad various questions about the family. What Juno’s goals are, what’s the proper terms of address, how to adress the family, what subjects to avoid. That kind of thing. And Vera starts getting a plan to cover up the old one that she can’t use anymore (She was going to blame Vlad for everything and point out what a security risk he was for kidnapping a girl from Von Rothrine territory, dragging her through the territory, getting into a fight in town, all that jazz. That won’t work.) because she’s wants to get some use out of Anton Bellek and his fuckery.
They say their goodbyes to Fyodora and Vlad and head back out the way they came. Once they get back to the catacombs however, when they pass the smelly hallway they all hear a noise. Vera doesn’t detect any evil, but they keep hearing a sort of wet meat smacking noise, like something’s moving. Instead of investigating that they get the fuck out of dodge and head back to the inn.
Fyodora sends a second letter that starts out readable by anyone as ‘I don’t want to see you again Havilah’ but he can read (after the initial shock) that she’s still safe and that an invite to the castle for dinner should come in the next few days. And, indeed, Hanz the younger comes himself to the inn to extend the invitation, asking for any dietary concerns like a proper polite host. They exchange plesantries and are told to dress nice if they’re able before Hanz leaves. The eldest barmaid is like ‘Well, that sounds interesting!’ and Vera’s like ‘oh, doesn’t it?”
Oz takes to the wagon to edit the dress Nitahn bought Vera to fit her and edit a set of armitage’s dress clothes to fit himself while Nitahn heads into town to buy something to cover up his smell on advice of Vlad. He buys two vials of perfume and after Wolf-Wolf leads him to a soap vendor and is like ‘hey i found that scent we were looking for!!!!’ Nitahn buys him a treat. The party gets ready and Oz i able to tell that the cologne Nitahn bought is based in fox urine. He doesn’t tell him and Nitahn douses himself liberally with it. Without their armor but with their silvered weapons the party heads to the castle after a last minute stop to buy a cask of whiskey to offer as a gift.
Vlad had warned them that there would likely be a large number of people in the hall for dinner as a show of force, because Juno has been making a lot of family members. Vera steps foward and adresses the family: first Deidric the clan head, then she adresses Juno as the countes of the vodyvolk wilds (which earns an eyebrow raise, thanks for the in Vlad) and when Hanz arrives a bit late she addresses him as proper. Juno looks to Vlad and he gives a sharp shake of his head; she’s asking if they’re the ones who nearly killed him a few days prevously. (He’s got a gnarly scar on his abdomen, Vera apologized for nearly bisecting him)
Plesantries are made and Vera explains that they’ve been in the country long enough that if you play meek and skirt under the lords of the land then you’re a target, so visiting the family to pay them duty due is only proper. She also alludes to having an interest in finding like minds against the Von Rothrines, citing the town of Hora that the group met in four months ago that was filled with kind people and then very abruptly wasn’t from the thirst. “Revenge, or justice?” “Justice, on a grand scale.”
Having piqued the interest of the countess they settle in to dinner. Nitahn sits by Deidric and gets talked to about hunting for a bit, and Juno calls in the wolves. Literally. Like 30 wolves come ito the room and start picking on the scraps. Questions start coming Nitahn’s way, like “So, where are you from?” “oh, all over, I’m a traveler.” “Traveler, huh? So, dragonport, dormond, rusk?” “All of the above!” “you’re pretty hairy.” “Yeah....” “That’s a nice wolf you got there. Few steps from wild, huh?” “Yeah, I found him, he’s a stray.” “You have a good connection with him? Like, almost understand him?” “Well, I’m working on it, he doesn’t understand me the best.” And he lets them down by not being a werewolf, but shortly after gains some points when someone else asks “So how’d he lose the ear?” and Nitahn awkwardly is like “He bit me. So i bit him back.” leading to anyone listening to burst into laughter and appreciaction. One asks him why he smells like fox piss, to which Nitahn looks betrayed at Oz. Oz doesn’t know why nitahn is looking at him but he smirks down the table.
Oz is across from an older woman who’s got her eyes set on a sweet little young thing and seductivley eats a chunk of meat. Oz politely smiles and  makes small talk with Hanz.
Meanwhile Vera’s doing her best to deal with the beast herself. She explains they’ve traveled the north and when Juno asks about it’s status, she tells her about Anton Bellek and his silver mine ran by humans. Getting a steady supply of silver into the hands of humans aligned with them (or wolves in human form) could be useful. lAs well as having a vampire ally, one who killed his master. Vera expresses distaste and how she’s unable to work for him due to her code of ethics, and Juno remarks how there’s no good or evil. (Which sounds like something someone evil would say). Juno presses Vera to know what she’s after and Vera tries simpering away, to mixed sucess. Juno does allow her to back down, stating that it’s soemthing to go over at another time. She also makes a bit of small talk, asking her how far along she is. Here the mask slips when Vera does the math, and, oh fuck she’s six months along.
Juno has the cask of whiskey they brought brought out, and suggests that Wolf-Wolf take the first drink because they’re far less likely to have given him protection from poison. The poor boy doesn’t like whiskey, with Nitahn apologizing and explaing they’ve only given him beer before. Booze is offered to the two men, with none offered to Vera because Juno’s been pregnant, she’s not going to make a pregnant woman drink. She also extends an invitation to stay at the keep, which Vera says she’ll get her companion’s opinion on before accepting or denying the genrous gesture.
Deidric puts an arm around NItahn and invites him out to a hunt, with Vlad interjecting and being like ‘oh, uncle, he’s probably tired’ and getting him out of hunting what probalby would be humans. Vlad also compliments him on the fox piss cologne, they’ll be smelling it for weeks when it rains. Nitahn is less enthused about this entire thing. The three gather and talk for a quick moment, Nitahn vetoing that idea and being like ‘blame it on me, say I’m not used to being in places like this beccause I’m a traveler.’ They have a bit of banter, with Oz bringing up to Nitahn whas would happen to Vera if she’s bitten. She’s a paladin, but what about the baby? To which Vera immedently gets a sour face and is like ‘I don’t- no. You know what? You need to remind me to ask Nik what happens, becuase I’m not thinking about this. if he didn’t want to get these letters he wouldn’t have pulled me out of the canals as a child’ and explains to them that she’d been trying to swim to the tarrasque. Nitahn knows that it’s basically monster godzilla and is like ‘whyyyyy’.
They make polite exit and head back to the inn for the night, finding that Steve had gotten baked with the stable boy and probalby has punked him a few times with the horn. They go to bed, and Vera dreams. There’s a bear or maybe she’s the bear, she knows what her name used to mean. And she’s running, and there’s wolves, but is she running away from the wolves or are the wolves running from her? Then it changes and the bear is running to the wolves, rearing up on it’s hind feet and it stands tall and powerful above them.
She wakes up and is like ‘I blame you’ to her stomach before doing her usual prayers. And when she opens her eyes at the end there’s a bear there. She knows what it is and why it’s there, and all she can do is reach out and grab it’s nose and start crying.
oz hears the sound of her crying through the door and gets Nitahn, hwo opens the door to find Vera on her knees and sobbing, reaching up to cradle the bear’s head. He closes the door and asks oz ‘Was there a bear in there when you left?” to Oz’s stunned response of no. Nitahn opens the door again and is like ‘Vera, where’d that bear come from?’ and Vera responsd in high pitched sobbing.
Eventually she calms down enough to be understood, saying ‘He’s too big to fit through the door’ “Well, how’d he get through the door?” ‘he didn’t’ “...How did he get through the window?” ‘he didn’t?’ Nitahn looks at the intact walls, ceiling, and floor, before looking back at her. “How did he get in here?”
“He’s mine. I thought if I fell any night it’d be last night, but he’s here and he’s mine.” And with that Oz can make his knowledge religion check to guess that this is Vera’s paladin mount, a magic creature gifted to her by  her goddess. And it’s a bear.
Vera is later displeased at the realiziation that the bear comes with a saddle and she’s expected to ride it.

White noise fan fiction: The Cynn vs parenthood
Chapter one: little miracles
 The biggest fear for anyone who has children is said children going missing.
One child going missing on there way home from school bad enough, but a whole spate of children going missing in the space of a week?
That was nightmare inducing.
So when series of abductions rocked Edonia, RIT put on the case very quickly. Yesterday quickly.
A trail of missing kids, suspicious produce vans, and the footage from a freshly installed domestic cctv system led them to a small warehouse, set in the far corner of an industrial estate, just outside city limits, which by all means was seemingly abandoned. No lights, no sound. Just the wind, the rain, and the sounds of other businesses going about their day to day business in the back ground.
But, the RIT team was patient. Very patient. Intel said that they buyer was gong to be arriving soon to pick up the live cargo.
And just before sun set, they did.
A white van, displaying the logo of a produce company from the next island over reversed up to the cargo dock, the driver hopping out to open the bay doors and back the van in some more. As they did, RIT moved in closer- stealth was a key factor here. Traffickers liked there emergency teleport spells, and one small slip would be catastrophic.
The two with wings hopped silently onto the roof, finding a skylight, they watched as the traffickers, 5 of them in total, from a range of species, dragged a whimpering line of children out of some storage containers. The children where paraded past the buyer, who inspected them each individually, inspecting there age, breed, and how much they were worth, arguing with the trafficker every now and then over little details.
With each second, RIT crept into position, using hand signals and walkie talkies to communicate and finalise the trap.
Inside the warehouse, Money was estranged.
RIT pounced.
-
“Well, that was easy.” Teige carrol said breezily, pushing the last of the traffickers, and grumpy looking jackalope with a broken antler, into the waiting police riot van. The whole operation had gone down with out a hitch.  with the traffickers being taken by surprise, they had had no time to activate any of the teili spells, or to destroy any evidence. They had been tackled, cuffed and had there magic bound in under a minuet buy the 7 strong RIT team, and the buyer had not gotten far, being slammed into the floor by a 6’10 ball of grey fluff and fury called Hawk press the moment they tried to run for the van. The same van that was now loaded on the back of a tow truck, on its way to the local police compound for forensic tests.
They were having a bad day.
 Once the prisoners had been bagged and tagged, all eyes when back to the gaggle of children that where now sitting on the cold cement floor, watching there rescuers with looks of awe, tinged with just a little bit of fear.
Captain James Marinos turned to the rest of his team. It was important that this kids where taken to a safe, warm place for medical attention before they were reunited with there families.
“PRESS, CARROL, yes, you two! Keep an eye on these kids. VINCENT! You and Pascelli fetch the Minibus AND TURN THE HEATING ON- not all of us have thick fur to keep us warm. Murry, you go with the cops, fill in any info they need, we will pick you up on our way through. I will call back to base the give them the good news, and tell them to contact parents. NOW SNAP TO IT!”
RIT snapped to it.
~~~~~
Hope and hearth hospital was used to having trafficking victims brought through there doors for treatment, being the largest nonhuman hospital in the symphony archipelago. Once Marinos had given them the heads up to the large group of preteens (there was 15 children in total, aged between 5 and 12) was heading there way, one of the paediatric wards was quickly isolated for the children to reside in. 15 beds, for 15 kids, with a small army of nurses to preform health checks and provide food and cuddles where needed.
It was a small miracle that none of the kids had been hurt physically in any way, apart from some bruises and one damaged ego. They where lucky. Very lucky.
Hawk and Teige where still on kid watch duty, and they both looked rather out of place, in there dark blue uniforms, stormy feathers and inky fur, ageist the bright and cheerful, flowers and happy critter wall murals that set the children wards apart from the rest of the rather bland hospital. The two of them guarded the only door into this particular ward, keeping an eye on the coming and goings of the staff in there purple scrubs.
“so, sunshine. Ever been in the kiddies ward before?”
“nope. You?”
“me? Ahhhhh, no. One of me sisters? Yup” Teige yawned, scratching at one of his curved ram horns. They had been on the go since before sun up, and now it was late. In mid-summer. They were tired.
“what she do?” hawk shuffled his wings, stretching his wings a little, trying not to yawn himself.
“lets just say that the words ‘hey, watch this!’ was part of it. Ma was at work, so guess who had to take her stupid butt to hospital.  …….Stop laughing sunshine. Not everyone has self-healing sisters.”
“annnnd there one of the reasons that I an’t ever been to the kiddies ward. That and Em would’ve never been able to foot the bill.”
“ahh, point.”
A commotion from the doors behind them, leading out to rest of the hospital. Hawk glanced back through the windows on the (closed) doors and winced slightly. Teige cocked his head in response to hawks expression.
The rest of the RIT squad had arrived, along with 13 rounds of panicky parents.
Ironically, it took longer to get the parents to settle down then it did the children in the first place. But once the panicky round of ‘oh gods thank the heavens you are all right you are so grounded for eternity we love you’ where over and done with, the ward matron laid down the law. The kids where to be staying for at least the next 12 hours for observation (just in case. it was standed practice for all incoming trafficking victims, young or old), and would be given an obligatory tetanus vaccine before they left (also just in case, you never know). Parents could stay, but there where no space for spare beds. Please keep that in mind.
Once the announcements where over, and the ruckus had calmed down, most of the parents of the older children opted to go back to their homes, safe in the knowledge that there kids where safe and sound at the hospital. They would be good for one night- and it gave them time to inform other family members of the good news. That left 7 of the 13 sets to pull up some plush chairs that had been provided, so that they could stay the night with there little ones.
A relieved calm settled over the ward as the children and most of the remaining adults drifted of the sleep. The nurses on duty switched shifts, and Hawk and Teige where told, in polite terms, to go and get some shut eye in one of the adjoining rooms. They would need to be back at the hospital with the rest of the RIT squad with in 8 or so hours anyway to finish up the paperwork that needed to be done (report writing was the worse part of the job, in both opinions). So they both decided to catch some sleep where they were instead.
“ we could still go bother Vlad” Tiege grumbled snuggling His stoat form into a pillow. The room the two of them had borrowed was not huge, and was probably a little office at some point. It was just big enough for Hawk to stretch out his 6’10 frame, wings and all. It was still kind of snug, but it was not the worse place that the two of them had slept. This room had air con, for example.
“An’ why would we do that, this place is comfy enough” Hawk settled into the small pile of blankets and pillows that had been provided, smiling at the thought of the friendly spirit He called his roommate, and the brilliant cooking that the two of them would whip up some nights. Chuckling, Hawk reached over and promptly dumped one of the thin, but very warm blankets on Teige, covering the grumpy phooka completely. Teige’s lamp like eyes glared out from under the edge of blanket, glaring at the younger, taller man. Hawk grinned at him. Teige huffed and curled up under the blanket. He started fell asleep and snoring almost instantly.
Hawk settled down into his makeshift bed, still smiling. It was late. He was tired. But they had saved some kids, and stopped the traffickers from getting away. All in all. A good, productive day.  The rest of there squad had been summoned back to base, for a debriefing, but they had been asked to stay by some of the staff. Hope and Hearth did have a security team, but it had been agreed that the presence of the two of them would be a good way to reassure the children when they woke up. It gave peace of mind to the parents as well. The hospital had to provide somewhere to sleep in return.
It would do for the night. Besides, there was a much nicer bed waiting for him back at Vlad’s. and at his wonderful boyfriends..
Hawk fell asleep with the images of star studded bedding and hairless cats in his mind.
Naomi Goode (Interested): Chai introduced Naomi to Raul and got them to give one another their numbers. They texted for a while before she stumbled into the bowling alley and saw them play. They flirted the whole game and he invited her to come to more, which she has. Raul really likes Naomi, but it hasn’t really moved onto more romantic or intimate dates. He thinks his hints may be too subtle and is going to ask her out more directly soon.
Platonic Connections:
Chai Gates (Bowling Teammate): Raul got into bowling as a way to socialize with older supernaturals. Besides Rhiannon, the people he’s surrounded by are all under 150 and just don’t have the same life experiences that he does. Chai is cool. She’s invited him out with her friends a few times, but he prefers to stick with the bowling group.
Angel Landyn (Bowling Teammate): Raul got into bowling as a way to socialize with older supernaturals. Besides Rhiannon, the people he’s surrounded by are all under 150 and just don’t have the same life experiences that he does. Angel doesn’t either, he realized only after playing for a few weeks and joining the team. He’s younger than his fellow mentees. They’re friendly, but Raul doesn’t go out of his way to talk to him.
Farrokh Alvi (Bowling Teammate): Raul got into bowling as a way to socialize with older supernaturals. Besides Rhiannon, the people he’s surrounded by are all under 150 and just don’t have the same life experiences that he does. Farookh is his favorite member of the bowling team, and he’s been hinting at hanging out outside of meets. Raul isn’t sure if he’s not being clear with his hints or if Farrokh isn’t interested. He knows he doesn’t excel at being clear, so he’s working off of the theory that his hints are too weak. He is going to ask him more directly to grab a drink soon.
Raphael Caron (Bowling Teammate): Raul got into bowling as a way to socialize with older supernaturals. Besides Rhiannon, the people he’s surrounded by are all under 150 and just don’t have the same life experiences that he does. Raphael doesn’t seem to really like him. He’s not sure what he did, but they never have conversations that go past bowling.
Rhiannon Draga (Mentor): Raul has only only been in town for a few years mentoring with Rhiannon while he waits for her husband, Vladimir to have an available open for spell crafting. This worked out in Raul’s favor because Rhiannon and another mentee are heliokinetic, which made learning the last half of his advanced powers easier. Rhiannon has allowed him to sit with Vlad on their off days to what he can with spells related to his powers. He appreciates her and what she has taught him so far.
Nathaniel Clarke (Close Friend): Nathaniel and Raul are both Rhiannon’s mentees. Their powers compliment each other and Raul enjoys their learning experiences together. Only recently have they hung out outside of training or practicing together and Raul has found Nathaniel’s aura to be peaceful.
Gloria Ramos (Business Associate): Raul was the Ramos hunter family’s go to person to destroy magical items. Gloria is apparently now based out of Chicago, and their previous business relationship will probably continue.
Fallon Draga (Unsure): Raul is 100% Fallon is jealous of him but can not bring himself to care or hate her in return. She has not earned his respect and has a lot of growing up to do in his eyes but it is not his place to say so.
Hector Santiago (Father): Hector raised Raul as a single father until he met and settled down with Whitney, who became Raul’s step mother. It was hard for Hector and Raul growing up without a helping hand. Hector has the power of umbrakinesis while Raul had heliokinesis. Hector shied away from sunlight while Raul ran towards it. Falling in love and marrying a vampire did not help their situation either. Hector moved himself and Raul Underground, nearly killing Raul in his teens when he got lost Underground for days once. Hector and Whitney choose to stay in South America while Raul travels learning his powers. No one knows that Raul knows the inner working of vampires or that the women who help raise him is one. Raul isn’t ashamed but knowledge is power.
Christina Santiago (Mother): Christina died giving birth to Raul. Hector does not like talking about it but Raul is sure it is because Hector did not love Christina and feels guilty about her death. Christina and Hector were only married a few weeks before they found out they were having him. Their marriage is a prime example of why Raul despises arranged marriages.
Whitney Santiago (Step Mother): Hector and Whitney met while Raul was still young. Whitney is a vampire making it easier for Hector as a Umbrakinetic to love and live Underground with. Raul respects and loves Whitney because she has raised him as her own but always found it hard living in two places; above ground and Underground. When Raul was old enough he remained above ground permanently which upset Hector and Whitney but they both understood why. No one knows that Raul knows the inner working of vampires or that the women who help raise him is one. Raul isn’t ashamed but knowledge is power.
Wait a sec so Whorsebane is suppose to be an intimidating character even for somebody like Roose,I feel like I missed this. Also he's gay I feel like I missed that also. Which if he is is kinda cool that he's this intimidating gay man from a house known to be imposing and intimidating.
*rubs hands together* Yes, please, let’s take a deep dive into the characterization of Hother “Whoresbane” Umber, the smartest and most dangerous member of his clan and one of my favorite background characters in all of ASOIAF.
Tumblr media
Does “most dangerous Umber” seem like a stretch? Don’t get me wrong, I certainly wouldn’t want Crowfood or the Greatjon mad at me, but they’re presented as jovial life-of-the-party drunks as much as badasses. There’s a wry affectionate “oh, you scamps” sort of tone to how GRRM writes the Umber men…except Whoresbane, who is framed with an ice-cold laser-focused menace about him that his kin do not possess, despite Hother being the least physically imposing of the lot. Within the Northern political community, “Old Whoresbane” has a well-established reputation as perhaps the most fearsome figure within that community, a living legend spoken of in whispers (rather than the loud-and-proud stories surrounding big brother Mors), someone with whom you simply do not fuck if you care to see another spring:
A crow had once taken Mors for dead and pecked out his eye, so he wore a chunk of dragonglass in its stead. As Old Nan told the tale, he’d grabbed the crow in his fist and bitten its head off, so they named him Crowfood. She would never tell Bran why his gaunt brother Hother was called Whoresbane.
Odd as it might seem, old Hoarfrost Umber had once believed his youngest son had the makings of a maester. Mors loved to boast about the crow who took his eye, but Hother’s tale was only told in whispers…most like because the whore he’d disemboweled had been a man.
And now the Bastard of Bolton was riding south with Hother Umber to join them for an attack on Moat Cailin. “The Whoresbane his own self,” claimed a riverman who’d just brought a load of hides and timber down the White Knife, “with three hundred spearmen and a hundred archers. Some Hornwood men have joined them, and Cerwyns too.”
“Night work is not knight’s work,” Lady Dustin said. “And Lord Wyman is not the only man who lost kin at your Red Wedding, Frey. Do you imagine Whoresbane loves you any better? If you did not hold the Greatjon, he would pull out your entrails and make you eat them, as Lady Hornwood ate her fingers.”
“Fear is what keeps a man alive in this world of treachery and deceit. Even here in Barrowton the crows are circling, waiting to feast upon our flesh. The Cerwyns and the Tallharts are not to be relied on, my fat friend Lord Wyman plots betrayal, and Whoresbane…the Umbers may seem simple, but they are not without a certain low cunning.”
But, I hear you protest again: more menacing than Roose Bolton? Surely not! Well, look at how Roose himself describes Whoresbane. That ellipsis speaks volumes: Whoresbane Umber is so thoroughly intimidating that Roose gods-damned Bolton, the Leech Lord, Westeros’ answer to Vlad the Impaler, is reduced to trailing off and staring into the middle distance, ultimately unable to bring himself to cite specifics.
That’s the first layer. The second layer is the implication that Whoresbane has been the brains of Last Hearth for a very, very long time. He was only at the Citadel in the first place because his father Hoarfrost (which: yes) believed he had “the makings of a maester,” which certainly bucks the Umber stereotype. After Hother came home, his status as the smartest man in the room–a Halfmaester, if you will–has held as the decades have gone by. The Greatjon is certainly not an idiot (just look at how he tests and then crowns Robb), but his grab-with-both-hands approach to life carries with it some significant blind spots, and it’s Whoresbane who rides to Winterfell to point them out:
Hother wanted ships. “There’s wildlings stealing down from the north, more than I’ve ever seen before. They cross the Bay of Seals in little boats and wash up on our shores. The crows in Eastwatch are too few to stop them, and they go to ground quick as weasels. It’s longships we need, aye, and strong men to sail them. The Greatjon took too many. Half our harvest is gone to seed for want of arms to swing the scythes.”
Contrast Hother with Mors, and the picture becomes crystal clear. Crowfood, too, is far from stupid, but he comes to Winterfell to dance with the serving girls and offer his magical grief-curing cock to Lady Hornwood. Whoresbane is the one with the numbers in his head, the one keeping track of the harvest and the wildlings, the one looking out for the smallfolk of Last Hearth. Crowfood is doing everything he can to escape his brother’s household; Whoresbane is the one the Greatjon trusted to keep the lights on and bring concerns to the Stark in Winterfell.
And yes, as that anecdote about his time in Oldtown reveals, Whoresbane is gay. (Or possibly bi, but again, Crowfood is the one who asks for Lady Hornwood’s hand and macks on the serving girls, whereas Whoresbane shows interest in neither.) For me, this is part of an overall characterization in which Whoresbane defies the public image of his House and yet somehow also turns that image up to 11. Hother Umber is a gay man in a family of aggressively straight dudes, a “gaunt” and “cadaverous” man in a family of larger-than-life giants, an intellectual in a family of jocks, and is still the most metal of them all, and everyone knows it. How can you not love that?
What really cements Whoresbane as one of my favorites, though, are the hints about what the payoff for this characterization will look like. In ADWD, Whoresbane joins Team Bolton, taking half the remaining Umber men to the Dreadfort (and from there to Moat Cailin, Barrowton, and finally Winterfell) while leaving the rest with Crowfood. As Barbrey tells us, though, there’s no pretense that he’s actually loyal to Roose and Ramsay. Indeed, in Theon’s first ADWD chapter, we see that Whoresbane is wearing armor even to dinner, and can’t stop himself from expressing disgust at Ramsay’s treatment of Theon. And then, in Theon’s released TWOW chapter, we learn a very telling detail:
“Mors took the green boys and Hother took the greybeards.”
Whoresbane didn’t just randomly select half the remaining men at Last Hearth. He specifically brought his fellow greybeards with him. And what is it that old Northmen do when the food runs short as we know it is at Last Hearth (“half our harvest is gone to seed for want of arms to swing the scythes”), when winter is no longer coming, but here?
Alys sighed. “My father took so many of our men south with him that only the women and young boys were left to bring the harvest in. Them, and the men too old or crippled to go off to war. Crops withered in the fields or were pounded into the mud by autumn rains. And now the snows are come. This winter will be hard. Few of the old people will survive it, and many children will perish as well.”
It was a tale that any northmen knew well. “My father’s grandmother was a Flint of the mountains, on his mother’s side,” Jon told her. “The First Flints, they call themselves. They say the other Flints are the blood of younger sons, who had to leave the mountains to find food and land and wives. It has always been a harsh life up there. When the snows fall and food grows scarce, their young must travel to the winter town or take service at one castle or the other. The old men gather up what strength remains in them and announce that they are going hunting. Some are found come spring. More are never seen again.”
“Winter is almost upon us, boy. And winter is death. I would sooner my men die fighting for the Ned’s little girl than alone and hungry in the snow, weeping tears that freeze upon their cheeks. No one sings songs of men who die like that. As for me, I am old. This will be my last winter. Let me bathe in Bolton blood before I die. I want to feel it spatter across my face when my axe bites deep into a Bolton skull. I want to lick it off my lips and die with the taste of it on my tongue.”
So I think Whoresbane’s master plan (and given all of the the above, I’d say it’s very much his plan, and Crowfood is following his lead) is to lead the old men on a glorious kamikaze mission against the hated Boltons, while Crowfood preserves the next generation, who now may have enough to eat. Like his great-nephew Smalljon, he’ll go down a Stark man to the end, Umber on the inside where it counts.
