shy guy naming conventions: what? and why?

i'd like to think i know a thing or two about shy guys. i think they're really neat. but something i do not know is the answer to the question "what does it take for a guy to get its own name?" so lets discuss. (this one is really long)

shy guy 'species'

we members of the Shy Guy Research Institute (SGRI) view each shy guy 'name' as a different 'species' of guy. fly guy? biologically different from the average shy guy. theres a propeller sticking out of his head, and that isn't usually there to my knowledge. or so we thought! what if fly guy propeller is secret hat. consider this. if it is a hat, then is fly guy truly different from a regular shy guy?

see 'species' like clip guy, paint guy, pry guy, laundry guy, etc. what you will notice is that they are just holding something. in these cases their name literally only comes from what they're holding. does this mean they cease to be separate species when they put down their object? it seems so!!!!

in pm: ss, a clip guy becomes a regular shy guy once it uses its clip. that's crazy. and also not how species work i think. look at these insanely high quality files above. that's legally a clip guy. but then it isn't!!!!!! he's just a guy!!!!! madness i say.

ok then why are they called that

most definitely coding reasons. like 100%. but that isn't fun!!! ugh!!! perhaps... it is more like an occupation than a species. for some of them.

some 'groups of guys with a special name' are definitely their own species though. see pyro guy. he's literally on fire, no matter what, at all times. no normal guy could do that! they die to fire all the time!!!!!! paper burns!!! and yet pyro guy lives. there MUST be a biological difference then, yes?

and don't forget guys that, while not holding something or having an unchangable external trait, have sick ass outfits on. those guys (USUALLY.) get their own names! or what about guys that are just kind of weird (woozy guy, mega guy)? i have no clue what makes woozy guys woozy. are they born like that? or are they trained? don't ask me! what matters is that they have special name. this means something

from this incredible awesome research data stuff we can conclude the following about shy guy naming conventions:

to get your own special 'species' name, you must... (pick at least one)

be holding something (see the majority of shy guy variants)

have a special costume on/look drastically different (see spy guy, groove guy, etc.) note: it is not enough to simply have different coloured clothes on! regular shy guys come in 12 different colours and none of them get special names / there are weird exceptions to this rule. why isn't shy guy in chef costume its own thing?

be inherently different from a regular guy in an unchangable way (pyro guy, snifit, boo guy, etc.)

act a little different (woozy guy, itsunomanika heihō, etc.)

i am as uncomfortable with that last one as you are i assure you! whatever it's probably fine. i probably missed a rule or two but you will just have to deal with that. subscribe for more shy guy content

So for the bodyguard au wanted to make alternate designs for power ups based on incorporating them with shy guy masks and shy guy variants. Listen I will take any opportunity to make outfits for characters it is just so much fun!

Adding sketches on both how the mask works along with an example of a transformation sequence below the “keep reading” to avoid this post getting super long. Quick edit before I forget I do plan on an alternate cat (super bell) power up that leans more into the cat aesthetic. I just wanted to design a more stealth/field outfit for him. I also have drafts for a knight design for the metal power up! Those are coming later though.

So I wanted to work on the setup that power ups aren’t readily accessible in the Darklands (with the exception of fire flowers and maybe boo shrooms). To counter this I’m going with the concept of fusing power ups with masks so they can be used multiple times (think Majora’s mask). 

Currently working with the idea of while this does make the power up a bit weaker, as long as the mask isn’t broken or removed from the user the power up will stay in effect.

Also on how shy guy masks work with different faces this just goes with my headcanon that there are different things under each shy guy’s mask. Varying from some shy guys just having a void that stares back to horrifying appendages and the masks just cover these so they can all blend in together. 

The transformation sequence wouldn’t happen every time a mask would be used, but I will never pass an opportunity to draw Luigi break dancing. (Btw the reference for this sequence was Deboshir’s dance when he was going off against Zip Rock, break dancing competitions are super cool and I highly recommend watching them). Anyhow this is super rough, but I hope it gets the general idea across.

I like bloodweave. Okay. But I DON'T like the version of them in fanfic where Astarion is a dick and Gale is like. Whining and pleading for him to be emotionally vulnerable (or just. Nice to him) prior to the relationship being established. Because that is just not accurate. Gale needs the player to express interest in him during his weave-teaching scene before he even considers hitting on them properly. Gale is entirely resigned to his fate and needs someone else to pull him away from it. Gale only starts being sweet and romantic and devoted after you accept his love confession and give him hope for the future. Gale says fuck all and then slinks away to cry privately if you break up with him.

Like he isn't chasing after people lmao. He isn't dropping to his knees and crying about anything much less this dickhead he met a week ago. He is overwhelmingly passive about literally everything personal to him up to and including his own death (provided there are no casualties/there is a good reason) until after the player expresses that they care about him. Astarion is not doing that in any of these fics.

Like Gale is friendly and a dork and doesn't wanna get murdered but he fully has a suicide plan. He thought the artefacts would help him survive but he didn't believe he'd ever truly live again. If Gale confessed and Astarion said/did like one (1) mean thing afterward Gale's romance is closed off forever. He's wandering into the forest to cry. He's killing himself immediately. His fragile ego and self worth can't take it. You have to understand that when we joke about him being pathetic it's not bc he's like. Sopping wet and chasing people down and begging for a scrap of attention. It's because he craves affection but would literally rather die than ask or even hope for it until someone else forces that hope back into his serotonin-deficient tadpole brain.
