BNHA Observations, speculations and assorted info: Todoroki Mansion (Part 5: Bedrooms)

So, in order to write my fic, I spend much time observing canon scenes, comparing the manga and the anime version, take note of details, translations and info in them as well as finding out how are some things called.

Since what I noticed/speculated/found out can be of use for other fic authors I thought to share as well.

School Briefs III "Dramatic Makeover!" School Briefs V "Awkward Year's-End Soba"

OBSERVATIONS, SPECULATIONS AND ASSORTED INFO:

Through the story we don't really get to see all the bedrooms in the house, we only see the room in which baby Fuyumi and toddler Touya slept, the one in which Natsuo and Touya slept and the one in which Shouto (baby and child) slept, as well as the room Shouto had in U.A. dormitories which is said to have furnitures that match the ones he had in his room.

Due to what we see we can draw up some common point and then analyze differences as well.

The bedrooms in the Todoroki Mansion are washitsu (和室), which means "harmony room" but which is the name used to mean "Japanese-style room".

It's a room characterized by a tatami flooring (Tatami (畳) is a type of mat used as a flooring material in traditional Japanese-style rooms)...

and sliding doors, be they Shōji (consisting of translucent or transparent sheets on a lattice frame) or Fusuma (vertical rectangular panels often painted)...

....and, if the particular room is also meant to serve as a bedroom it can have an Oshiire (押入れ), a built-in space where bedding items (futon mattress and pillows, etc.) but sometimes also clothes or item people do not usually use are stored.

I'll spoil you a bit and tell you the Todoroki are always shown sleeping not in cribs or western beds but in Futon (布団), a traditional Japanese style of bedding...

...whose complete set consists of a Shikibuton (敷き布団 "spreading futon") mattress...

...and a Kakebuton (掛け布団 "covering futon") duvet.

The pillows used are Makura (まくら) pillows, which are generally firmer than western pillows.

HOW ONE REACHES THEM?

The bedrooms we're shown seem to be not on the ground floor but on the first floor. We aren't shown where the stairs are so it's hard to say which way one has to take to reach them, but the visual seems to imply they can be reached by the engawa on the first floor since that's what's shown to us after showing us Touya and Natsuo's bedroom... and the place from where Shouto watches his siblings.

Since when Enji reaches Shouto while the latter is watching his siblings from it and, planning to bring him to the training room, he leads him in the direction opposite to where the entrance is, it's likely there should be stairs to get on the ground floor in that direction, though it's possible there are more in the opposite as well.

THE FIRST FLOOR ENGAWA

So I've been told the corridor above the engawa at the ground floor also qualifies as engawa (縁側/掾側) or en (縁) since it's also an edging strip of non-tatami-matted flooring, usually wood or bamboo which run around the rooms, on the outside of the building.

The one we're always shown has a view on the Todoroki garden.

In addition to the wooden railing, it is enclosed by glass (actually, the first time the anime showed it, the glass was missing and Shouto could touch the railing but then they retconned the scene in season 6 and drew it so that Shouto didn't rest his hand on the railing anymore).

Plenty of Shōji doors with a lower door panel open on it, while the floor is in wood.

Does those Shōji doors lead directly to the bedrooms?

It's hard to say, as characters seem to enter in the bedrooms ALWAYS by Fusuma doors and not by Shōji doors and in the "School Briefs" it's said Shouto's bedroom had a Shōji window.

What's more, when we see the inside of Natsuo and Touya's room, in the anime we're shown the one on the opposite side of the door is clearly a Shōji window... while in the manga we can't really see it well but there's furniture in front of it so I doubt it's a door.

Whatever, let's focus on what we see of them.

BABY FUYUMI AND TODDLER TOUYA'S ROOM

We don't really know if this is their bedroom or they're sharing the bedroom with their parents. They were clearly put down for a nap, and left under Enji's supervision, so it would make sense for their Futon only to be out and not for the ones of their parents.

Contrary to what many fanfics say, they don't sleep in cribs but they have baby Futon.

So, behind Enji we can see Fusuma doors, which in the manga have same sort of drawing on the lower part while in the anime have a stripe on them.

In the manga those doors could be the door to get inside the room, as well as the door to an Oshiire.

In the anime they seem more like the door to an Oshiire, since we can see a Shōji door with no lower door panel on the left. The anime adds some furniture to carry baby necessities and a pillow with giant plushies. Oddly enough and differently from the manga the floor in the anime doesn't seem to be a tatami one, but it likely is meant to be.

BABY SHOUTO'S ROOM

It's hard to say if it's the same room in the manga, as we can't see well the Fusuma doors. It's clearly not the same room in the anime as the Fusuma doors are different but at least now we can see the tatami mats.

Hard to say if this is meant to be Shouto's room or if Rei is keeping him to sleep in their bedroom and only later Shouto will get his own room, through, same as when Touya and Fuyumi were small, it would make sense for Rei to keep him sleeping in their room as it would be the best way to check on him during the night.

CHILD SHOUTO'S ROOM

While not a lot is shown, we get a glimpse of child Shouto's bedroom. The manga only shows us the Futon, the anime shows us what we call a Shōji lamp pending on the ceiling.

"School Briefs 3" confirms that "The Todoroki family house had square, wooden fixtures that hung low from the ceiling. When it was time for bed, one needed only to tug the string dangling a few feet above one’s futon."

It's unclear which furniture the anime put near the bed.

TEENAGER SHOUTO'S ROOM

Sadly we never see it but "School briefs 3" though, due to dealing with Shouto moving to the school dormitory, let us known which furniture were at home in his room.

"The kids were allowed to use their bed, desk, and dresser set furnished by the school or to bring their own furniture, so Todoroki was now looking at the wadansu dresser, fuzukue desk, low zaisu chair, and futon straight from his room at home, as well as a cardboard box containing his clothes and other small necessities."

We'll see the furnitures Shouto brought from his home (I guess they're extra, as when Shouto goes back home his room isn't empty) in the manga and the anime when we're shown his dormitory room so let's look at it as a way to get an idea of how the furniture in Shouto's room are.

A wadansu (和タンス/和箪笥) dresser is a typical Japanese Tansu (箪笥) chest of drawers/cabinet, like the two we see at the right.

They come in plenty of shapes. The one of which we catch a glimpse in the right should also be a type of wadansu.

A Fuzukue (文机) desk is a low desk...

... Shouto can sit using a Zaisu (座椅子) chair, Japanese chairs with a back and no legs. We see though that the one SHouto uses is slightly taller than the ones that were in the Todoroki dining room.

We also see he has what we call Shōji lamps.

Inside they have a light bulb but this kind of lamps, as well as the square, wooden fixtures that hung low from the ceiling the Todoroki have...

...are based on the Andon (行灯), a paper-covered wooden stand housing an oil lamp. The paper was meant to protected the flame from the wind. Nowadays though, the oil lamps had been replaced with light bulbs but the name remained the same so that what for us is Shōji lamps, for Japanese people is still caleld Andon.

By the way, the ones that are meant to hung from the ceiling (and are large and flat) are called Hachiken Andon (八間行灯) or just Hachiken (八間), while the lamps Shouto has on the floor, which are the most common indoor type, are called Oki Andon (置行灯) and are mostly vertically box-shaped, with a stand for lighting a lamp (or, nowadays, hosting a light bulb) inside and, in the past, used to have a handle on the top for carrying. Some had drawers at the bottom.

Long story short, Shouto's furniture have a very distinct Japanese feeling.

"School briefs" seem to imply Shouto's room has a Shōji window, not a Shōji door...

"…Todoroki’s gaze settled on the window next, and he noticed the curtains provided by the school.

No Shōji window panels either…

Still feeling like something was off, he walked to the window and absentmindedly opened and shut the curtains. He was used to the curtains at school, but never in a room where he slept."

and

"Fine, fine. Your Futon's drying by the window in your room. Why don't you take it down and lay it out?"

TOUYA AND NATSUO'S ROOM

If Shouto's furniture has a distinct Japanese feeling, things change with Touya and Natsuo's room. But let's go with order.

They too have a Fusuma door...

...and Futon beds...

...but you can already notice that the lamp is of the western kind, not a Shōji one and the lampadary on the ceiling also seems a round western one.. (though it's really hard to see it well and I might be wrong).

Still, there's definitely a more western feeling in this room as again, the lamps on the desks are western ones and so are the desks and the chairs.

There's also a tansu in the background, but it's less similar to the traditional ones which Shouto has.

Considering the desks and the chairs should have been brought when at least Touya was old enough to speak up, it can be they reflect Touya's tastes, which might be less traditional Japanese furniture oriented.

As Fuyumi isn't shown sleeping in the room nor there's a third desk for her (the one next to Touya's is filled with toys that seems to belong to a boy), we can assume she got her own room while Natsuo was left to keep on sleeping with Touya. Hard to say if later, after Touya's death, that room became Natsuo's only or he moved to another room.

At the left, on the wall we don't see, we can speculate there's probably an Oshiire.

As said before in the anime on the opposite wall there's clearly a Shōji window, we can't be so sure in the manga as the Shōji seem to go lower but still there's a furniture placed there so... I don't know.

What we know is it shouldn't be the room to the Butsudan, as that room is meant to be one in which the family communicate with deceased family members and make offerings to them and, likely, existed prior to Touya's death in honour of Enji's deceased father (and, possibly, his mother), never mentioning the room has a Shōji door instead than a Fusuma one.

We also know that none of these rooms is the one in which Enji hit Rei after discovering Touya burned himself again as the furniture in that rooom match with the ones in the tv room.

WHAT ABOUT ENJI AND REI'S BEDROOM AND FUYUMI'S BEDROOM?

They aren't shown but they likely are still at the first floor, still washitsu with Fusuma doors and Shōji windows and they likely sleep in Futon.

I was watching Furuba the Final with someone else this one time, so we started on s3. I still owe all the eps. of s2, though.

It’s been about 5 months since I last watched Furuba…that’s how far behind I am. I’m back because the sequel is about to air on April 13th, though.

I don’t think I’ll ever get used to these natural-looking clouds…

Between Wave!! and Sk8, winter 2021 was a very good season for board sports anime.

LOL, Nalu is still on his ukulele after all this time. Also, Masaki hasn’t dressed up his computer and Zoom looks very simple…(LOL?)

Apparently Japan and Hawaii are 19 hours apart, so while it may seem to be night for both, Masaki is almost a day ahead of Nalu.

Ohmigosh, Kosuke is so strait-laced, he’s a real anime villain! (Haha…)

“Surfing yappe!” really is a context-dependent sentence, huh? (noting what Masaki was saying from the mouth flaps)

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from creative writing classes, it’s that exaggerating a character does not necessarily make it good. (I once had a character with an exaggerated accent who stood out in every scene he was in…Needless to say, I’ve scaled back on that stuff significantly since then.)

…goddang it, whenever anyone says “beef or chicken?” now, I think of that one swindler dad *points accusative finger at HypMic’s Rei*

…I’m still wondering: is Sho actually dead? You couldn’t tell from the previous episodes.

According to the rules of Pokemon and the like, power moves like Power Break are best used by muscular guys like Joe.

To be honest, the reason I fell away from anime for a bit is because I was feeling like Langa in this episode. I guess I should applaud people who can keep up with long runners like Pokemon consistently on a weekly basis.

How can this anime use horror tropes so well…?

This rainbow world…it is known as The Zone *scare chords*…(Nah, scrap the chords.)

…c’mon! I was joking about that name (“The Zone”)! I didn’t actually mean it…!

…and that’s done! That was great, although (for reasons unrelated to this anime – in fact, I drifted away from anime for a bit...for more details on that, see episode 9's notes) I know I really lost myself at one point. That’s why I’m really thankful to Sk8 for getting me out of that funk.

Horimiya 2

I watched KareKano today (March 25th 2021) and I think Horimiya is very much following in that anime’s legacy. The double-sidedness of Yukino reminds me of Miyamura, to be precise. That’s why I’m back, after abandoning this anime for so long.

Man, since I was away since week 1, this is like watching the anime fresh for the first time again…

(spoilers) I know this from rolling him in Mudae, but Miyamura’s first name is Izumi.

I almost thought with this development, it was all, “Call me Kyoko!” as well, but…nope.

Sengoku’s scary…but not as much as Honobono. (My automatic response to the name “Honobono”, after listening to the 2nd DRB drama tracks from (HypMic) is to mutter “F*** Honobono” and give her the finger, LOL.)

BNHA OPs 1-7 Ranked

This is my personal opinion. Obviously. The OPs are thoroughly subjective and everyone has their favorites and least favorites. This is just my ranking and its a hard list for me to do because they’re all. So damn good. I’m including both visuals and music here for criteria.

#7. OP 3 “Sora Ni Utaeba” by Amazarashi (Season 2 Part 2, Eps 26-38)

It’s so hard to pick a least favorite. They’re all so good. The imagery in this one is neat and the symbolism is lovely. The song is nice enough. There are a few nice images here and there. This one is just my least favorite of the seven - partly because the song is a little bit too calm for me, and partly because it feels like just a basic summary of the events of the arc in imagery. I think the real reason this one is lower down for me is because it’s tone doesn’t exactly match the arc it’s attached to. The Stain arc is a little dark for this upbeat intro.

#6. OP 5 “Make My Story” by Lenny Code Fiction (Season 3 Part 2 eps 51-63)

This one has a pretty kickass song, albeit one that’s more of a rock jam than an emotional hitter. This one is actually lower down because aside from the final shot of All Might’s shadow encompassing Deku and Kacchan, the rest of it is again just more of a plot summary to me than a big symbolic fest. It’s just straightforward lineups of the characters rather than the more creative images of other OPS. Or maybe it’s just the PLE arc.

#5. OP 1 “THE DAY” by Porno Graffiti (Season 1, Episodes 1-13)

S1′s OP still stands up ok after all this time. This one is very Deku centric, which is probably what makes me like it a lot. All the broody Deku imagery and the opposed BKDK shots, the falling notebooks and the opening image of him reaching out towards that void image of All Might. Also the song is this darker, more edgy jam compared to some of the others and it still stands up after all this time.

#4. OP 7 “Starmarker” by Kana Boon (Season 4 part 2 Episodes 77-88)

This OP is pretty perfect for the season it’s attached to. It looks like a slice of life OP, lower speed and more easy-going in tone, with lots of shots of characters having fun. I’m really into the symbolism of it here and there, especially the part with the candy apple and the brooding scenes of TodoBaku. And all of the Jirous. So much of Jirou in this OP.

#3. OP 2 “Peace Sign” by Kenshi Yonezu (Season 2 Part 1, Eps 14-26)

Ah, the classic. The fan favorite. Most peoples’ pick for at least 2nd place if not first. I do love the song. It just sounds like the soundtrack to BNHA. It fits so well. I think it only lands in 3rd because the imagery is a lot slower and more simplistic than some of the others, at least more so than the top 2, but what we do get is pretty nice, especially the shots of the MCs working out towards the beginning. A respectable 3rd.

#2. OP 6 “Polaris” by BLUE ENCOUNTER (Season 4 Part 1, Episodes 63-77)

Boy howdy did this one grow on me. I started out being annoyed with it and now we’re here. 2nd place. A close second even. The music is epic (I find myself singing along to the title and doing so with gusty). The imagery is all perfect - never though they could make the internship arc look this great. My favorite, of course, is the shot of Deku and Eri falling, but the other stuff is pretty awesome too. It’s so close to being the best. But for now, still unbeaten:

#1. OP 4 “Odd Future” by UVERworld (Season 3 Part 1, Episodes 38-51)

Of course the best arc has the best OP. This one has been the best, to me, since i watched season 3. Still is. Never fails to bowl me over. The music, the imagery, the symbolism for the All Might vs All for One Fight; the shots of the characters, the way it tells you everything while giving away nothing and hypes you up. I KEEP MY IDEALS ZOREZORE is freaking life, man. And that last shot is the series in a nutshell.

It was a night of blazing as Emma and Norman begin to figure out how to escape from Grace Field House, while the remnants of the “Blood Mist Village” try to pick a fight with Boruto’s class, and Killua asks Alluka’s assistance in trying to save Gon from his injuries.

On Twitter, #Toonami and #HunterXHunter would trend in the US, while The Promised Neverland, Sword Art Online, Black Clover, and #Shippuden also trended alongside these shows, but not outright. Hunter x Hunter also produced a character trend in Alluka, as we learn the consequences of using her powers and why she has been locked away, but Killua decides that it is worth the risk.

Before we get to the big news of the week, here are some of the notable news of note for Toonami fans...

On Tuesday, Sean Schemmel and Chris Sabat had a rematch of the Super Saiyan Showdown. While Sean came more prepared this time around, Chris remained on top as he kept the belt with a 2-1 victory.

After many years of being in licensing hell, Discotek is planning a Blu-ray release of all 51 episodes of Cyborg 009: The Cyborg Soldier, the first time this classic has had a full release in the English-speaking world. The set is scheduled for release on June 25 retailing for $69.95 (or $45.47 on RightStuf).

In yet another example that you can’t win em all, while it has been announced that Mob Psycho 100 season 2 will indeed have a dub, it is looking like Toonami will not be among those premiering the dub of the new season as it has been announced that the dub will be exclusive to Funimation and Crunchyroll for now. We’re not sure what happened here, though theories have ranged from whether it was because someone at Funimation or Crunchyroll had veto power, or if Crunchyroll’s previous contract with Funimation prevents Toonami joining in as well despite the present growing relationships between Toonami and Crunchyroll, or Toonami were “caught with their pants down” when Mob was offered, and they couldn’t accept it at the time. Since Toonami didn’t get to premiere Mob previously as with Season 1 and had trouble getting the show until last October, it’s pretty safe to guess they don’t have some kind of right of first refusal for the sequels, unlike what we have seen with the likes of Attack on Titan, JoJo’s, One Punch Man, and SAO. Regardless of the reason, much like the situations with Blue Exorcist and Tokyo Ghoul among others, it looks like we’re going to have to wait for Mob and his crew to rejoin the better cartoon show. Hopefully it won’t be for long this time around.

While we press F to pay respects to Mob, Lupin fans meanwhile got themselves a big W this week…

We’ve been waiting for this announcement since the new season was announced last year, and the legacy of Monkey Punch will continue to live on as Toonami and TMS have announced that Lupin the Third will be returning for Part V beginning on June 15. Its position on the schedule is to be determined, though it should be noted that JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is scheduled to complete the Diamond is Unbreakable arc a week before and Hunter x Hunter will be completing its run the week after.

This season, Lupin and the gang will be headed off to France, as Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, and Fujiko continue to do what they do best and dodge Zenigata along the way. They will also be joined this season by Ami Enan, who’s voice actor is to be announced. As with previous seasons and films released recently by Discotek, the original cast will reprise their roles.

THAT…. REALLY IS A LOT…….but I did burn through a BUNCH of the new BnHA eps, so maybe tis a good time to talk about my good son….

Izuku Midoriya!!!! So I’ll answer all these questions with him!! To start… We do not have a secret greeting! Mostly cause neither of us have…considered that. (Now I’m feeling we should.) I mostly give him hugs! I may also teach at U.A., but……. I am also prone to favoritism, just like the rest of the staff, HAH.

Our favorite inside joke… I suppose it’s chanting “banana, banana…” Why? How this became a thing?!? …….That’s why it’s an inside joke. ;> It’s very silly, I’ll admit to that much.

3. What is your favourite sleepover activity?

Well, teachers don’t usually have sleepovers with the students….but what Aizawa doesn’t know I do won’t kill him! I usually regale him and the other 1-A kids about my heroic exploits. I even opened up a little on what it’s like to grow up with a villain parent, so I try to be a bit of an eye-opener that way.

The stories are the better part of the night, though. I get super into reenacting them!!

6. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve done together?

….Tried to prank Aizawa together and getting caught. Scolded, too. It’s one thing when it’s rowdy kids, but for a teacher to get into the spirit of pranks….. Sorry, Midoriya…

8. Who is more likely to get into a fight defending the other?

We both are defensive of the other, but it depends on the topic. Izuku gets more angry when he overhears people talking down of me due to my father, a villain. (Distrust of my background, as you do.) I get angry and worked up when it’s someone talking shit about him. (I’ve learned restraint with Bakugo, the mouthy kid…but anyone else? These paws are rated E FOR EVERYONE!)

I try to be the level-headed adult, but that’s not always guaranteed… [siiiiiighhh]

11. What do your texts/letters to each other usually consist of?

Something like this.

13. What’s your best memory together?

Heh, aside from meeting that kid? (He’s a little treasure HONESTLY, just ask Toshi next Takeover; I’ve cried over Izuku before.) I guess it would be when Toshinori and I invited him and his mother out for a picnic! I thought it’d be a nice way to all hang out together, meet up with her again, and just…have a nice day with good food.

It was wonderful.

15. How do you help each other cope with your trauma?

I’m there for him as much as possible, to make sure these things aren’t effecting him too badly. Being in such…early situations of danger can really mess with a person. I’d know; it’s not like dad’s villainy was a secret after I was born. He was never really a danger, but I felt it on him.

And being a pro hero? Taxing, emotionally. People can not realize that…. So I check up on him sometimes to make sure he’s okay and knows that he can tell me anything. In return, that bright smile cheers me up. I’ve told him as much; I may have depression, but it always feels better when he smiles. He really is like Toshi in that way…….

16. Do either of you have an item of clothing you wear that used to belong to the other? (Eg. You stole their jacket and they let you keep it)

Ahh, no! He’s too smol for me and it’d be weird. Though…. Not a wear item, but he did ask what happened to some of my older stuff from my younger hero days… I let him keep an old collar from my school days, since it collects dust and I thought he’s appreciate a trinket like that.

I hear it’s stationed around a figure of All Might, these days…..

18. What do you both do that annoys each other?

For Deku… Well, early on I got annoyed by how much he got hurt. Less anger, more a sort of panic and concern that bubbled into other emotions, you know? It’s reckless behavior and…I just didn’t want him to be lethally hurt, but he always tempted fate….. Now that he’s getting better at controlling One for All, I’m relaxing a bit more, but…yeesh. Otherwise, I love the kid.

Ditto with him to me. Once the news leaked my dad was a villain, things…blew up for awhile. They’re still not perfect. Yet when things started calming down, I took it upon myself to still get involved in issues, saving people left and right to prove to them (and even myself, in a way) that I’m still a hero. Deku got fussy with me for the same reasons and overexerting myself when I didn’t need to.

…He’s a good kid.

23. If you have a romantic f/o how do they react to them? Do they know them? Do they get along?

HAHA, OH BOY. GLAD YOU ASKED…. Fanboy to the highest degree. Me being related to a villain? Whatever. Learning that I was dating his hero, however…? Izuku went over the moon. We’d never made our relationship public and had no intention to, but that kid was one of the first to know.

….And the first major fanboy we were ever going to get, let’s be real. I wouldn’t be surprised if he became an avid shipper on some forum to talk about it… Ehehehe~

25. If one of you gets injured how does the other react? (And during the healing process do they hover or only occasionally check in?)

I freak out over Izuku on the daily, so you know I’m hovering wherever I’m allowed to be until he’s awake again. Y’know, considering most of his injuries end up being LIFE THREATENING….. Eugh. If it’s a smaller thing, I make sure it’s not too bad, deal with it, we’re good… With only minor hovering to make sure it’s not bothering him too much.

On the reverse, he tries to hover, but school keeps him busy. He visits when he can, I appreciate the company, and he usually goes right back to melting when Toshi stops in, too.

28. Have you ever accidentally referred to them as your sibling/parent? What was their reaction?

I have most assuredly called him my son before. At this point, he has two moms and Toshi is his dad. I am absolutely okay with this. (Inko got a laugh out of it when I told it to her later, too!)

29. Who gives who piggybacks when they’re tired? Who carries the other in general?

I’m the big, strong adult here! I carry the boy! ….Though he’s really getting harder to carry with all that muscle he’s been gaining… Yeesh, kid! They really grow up too fast, huh?

32. If they see you getting uncomfortable in a conversation will they intervene and give you a chance to get out of said conversation or will they let you deal with it yourself?

He rushes over, immediately. Unless it seems like not a good idea. Then he quickly gets Toshinori, instead. OR texts him to get over there, immediately, and proceeds to stall for time.

Either way, I’m about to be protected and…..I kinda need it. People are too much for me, sometimes…!

35. Have you ever built something together?

Mostly Lego stuff! It’s a struggle, but a nice way to relax with a friend and hang out with hilarious frustrations over pieces. Iida tries to help on occasion and we’ve learned he’s much better at getting that sort of thing done than we are.

36. If you were stranded on an island together what would happen?

We’d be the best fuckin’ survivors of all time! Cat quirk and One for All….. We’d dominate and surely get home in no time.

38. Do you quote vines/memes/musical lyrics to each other and laugh as everyone else has no idea what you’re both saying? What’s your favorite thing to quote together?

OH, I quote Vines and memes ALL THE TIME with the class!!! I enjoy it because Aizawa largely disapproves (and understands nothing; he’s a cat video man) and Toshi is thrice as baffled.

“Road work ahead? Uh, yeah, I sure hope it does!” is our favorite. Right next to “I’m just cooking pizza.”

40. What’s the most embarrassing photo they have of you and vice versa?

His is a picture he caught of Toshi and I hugging in the breakroom. I mean, he got a good shot and it’s sweet, in a way, but also….!! DEKU, PLEASE– (To my knowledge, he still has that to this day.)

My personal favorite is when he slipped on a banana peel and all you see in the picture is wide eyes of fright and a blue of green and grey. I was laughing so hard that day!!! Still my favorite to look back on.

46. When you’re both bored and have nothing to do what do you do to cure your boredom? (Eg. Play pranks, annoy each other, pillow fight, etc.)

Pillow fights or pranks on the others, for sure! I especially adore ruining Mineta, as he’s a little goblin and deserves all that happens to him.

48. Would ‘Platonic Soulmates’ be an accurate description of your bond?

Ehhhh, after thinking about it…. Not really. It’s more mentor-student or parental than something dramatic like soulmates. It’s just not that deep for us, yanno?

50. What are a couple of words that sum up your friendship?

Bright, laughter, joy, free, and forever.

51. Not a question, give a random fact/headcanon about you and your f/o!

Later confirmed, he did start a movement for shipping “All Might x Mani-Neko”. Where there was nothing before, there are fans and rather silly fanfictions. A few art, too. It’s all…weirdly adorable.

The better part was overhearing Deku and Toshi talking about where to find more content and what they thought of this-and-that…. Its great, in its own way, it really is.

BNHA Rewatch: Episode 51 “Moving Into Dorms”

“This form is All Might now too” Wow we really do live in a different era now.

Into is like Nana OMG the ship is real.

Class 1-A together again! I’m always so happy to return to them, every time an arc leaves them behind for a while. I miss them.

My God that is nice. My dorm was nowhere near this awesome and they get to stay there for free. I’m so jealous.

I’m not sure how this is supposed to flush out the traitor exactly. They’ll catch em at it, I guess?

Ah, time for the big Dadzawa guilt trip I see. I dunno, I know he’s just trying to do what’s considered acceptable, but just bear in mind that this big guilt trip probably contributed to Bakugou’s little PTSD fit…wait a minute…if this caused DVK2 then I totally forgive him never mind.

Aw Kacchan you do have a heart!

So posh, I’m so freaking jealous.

I love this little running gag of Uraraka fainting and Iida being concerned for her. Iichaco is back, babies!

The floor layout is interesting, since aside from Tsuyu, every girl is in the same floor as a guy she’s popularly shipped with (Momo and Shoto, Jiro and Kaminari, Mina and Kirishima, Tooru and Ojiro, Uraraka and Bakugou) and Deku is on the only floor with none of the girls. WHAT DOES IT MEAN.

Now the dorms:

But I’d rather have Iida’s room. Wow all the books.

BTW Ochako gets to laugh here while trying on his glasses which makes me ship them all the more.

Koda’s pet is cute but otherwise his room’s a little boring. Though apparently, one of the Light Novels reveals that that bunny is kind of a BKDK shipper, so it has my approval.

I wanna see the girls rooms too, just not for the same reasons as this pukestain.

Kirishima’s room is so self-consciously dudely. Like, they live in a school with a million gigantic gyms, but he needs a punching bag in his bedroom. Also Mina reacts to his room - Kirimina!

WAH I WANNA SEE KACCHAN’S ROOM WAAAHH

Sero’s is nice.

All the ladies love Todoroki now apparently. This is the first time everyone talks about him as some kind of Shoujo Manga sex god. It will only get sillier as time goes forward (and yet somehow it’s completely warranted. I still remember that costume from last arc, Shoto). Also highlighted is Momo’s RESPECT for him. Todomomo!

SO JAPANESE. Where does he sleep.

Sato’s room is boring except for the cake.

This is so wholesome I’m gonna die.

Jiro’s is basically best room Best room for best Girl. And Kaminari reacts to her room and teases her. Kamijirou!

Tooru’s is astoundingly comfy looking, with all the stuffed animals. Ojiro reacts to her room - Toojiro!

Mina’s is soo neon.

Uraraka’s is kinda plain. I like the space poster though.

Ooh Ochako noticed Tsuyu was in hiding. Tsuchako feels!

Momo of course has the other best room. She’s so rich. I want it.

And Sato wins because of cake bribery. Shenanigans! Juggle bribed shenanigans!

Uraraka getting everyone to apologize to Tsu, more Tsuchako feels!

Though I personally don’t think the BRS has anything to apologize for. They saved the day. They’re freaking heroes. And Deku, notably, does not apologize.

And this does raise a concern I have about the future of Izuku and Ochako’s relationship. Ochako, it seems, agrees with Tsuyu, not Deku. She didn’t bring this up to him. He doesn’t do as she wants here. There’s a communication problem here, during their first serious dispute, and I feel it needs to be addressed. Also, she’s just…odd in this scene…the two-faced lighting doesn’t help. It makes her seem so…strangely off.

I guess this’d be a good time to mention that I’m an Uraraka traitor theorist, though mainly because I think it would provide some good angst and give her character a little more narrative agency. But scenes like this help fuel the flame.

This ep is the breather ep, the cooldown after the intense-as-shit previous arc where we catch our breath and get ready to move forward. That doesn’t, of course, mean that nothing of importance happens in it. Or that it’s not incredibly entertaining. Wholesome Class 1-A antics are life breath and soul to me. I loove watching them goof off.

BKDK CORNER:

Not much in this ep, sadly. But hey, that guilt of Katsuki’s, after being slapped with his culpability in getting the Symbol destroyed, does pay off in about (checks ep #) 10 EPISODES LEFT OH MY GOD. AND ONLY 9 FOR ME BECAUSE I ALREADY DID 58. 9 MORE EPISODES THEN IT HAPPENS AND I’LL LOSE MY MIND.

BEST GIRL OF THE EP: I’m gonna give it to Jirou. Been a long time since we saw her!

The framing of this show is exquisite. Just look at how Yakyou is backlit by the shop, showing how isolated he is in comparison to the warm Rokuhoudou Night inside.

Putting these two brothers side by side and back to back is really something special, symbollically. It shows how they’re equals.

That one pose when Sui and Tokitaka declare Gure/Tsubaki’s combo to be like a festival…Tsubaki’s got no pupils for comedic effect there, ha.

Meanwhile, Bakugo’s just going ZZZ…I think he has the best taste, simply because he chose to ignore the competition, haha. Update: I thought about it and Bakugo was being really nice this episode, surprisingly. Maybe he really is mellowing out!

I don’t really get Tsu’s popularity, but at least I understand her feelings of becoming anxious when everyone disobeyed her request.

I love how they’ve managed to retain Kamopapa’s uncertainty in the subs.

Hey, with all the best shows I’m able to see parallels to the themes in weird moments like this one. So seeing Ata relate to Furanui shows how there’s a parallel between Ata/Ryoma/Kyoutarou, Wao/Kamopapa/Karurusu and Kamopapa/Karurusu/Furanui, and I couldn’t see that in previous seasons (either that or it wasn’t there), meaning this show is thematically better than seasons 1 and 2.

Aw, brotherly love…

Admittedly, season 2’s Postcard Memories (that’s apparently what you call the style with a lot of streaks) are the best, so I can see why one measly eyecatch from season 3 can’t compare…this one doesn’t have any streaks on it anyways, so it’s not like it could.

Island 1

I got so unsatisfied by how small the offerings were this season and needed something to keep my mind off a huge annoyance (one I can’t get rid of, you can see me being troubled by it in the Boueibu commentary above) that I know I’ll hate myself for watching this show, but…here we are.

Kid with amnesia. *sigh* Anime trope count: 1.

Robot dogs? That’s so early 2000s.

I knew that faceplant was coming because I read up on reviews before starting this (that’s specifically why I thought I was going to hate it), but on the other hand…thank goodness I didn’t have to see his (I already know his name’s Setsuna, so Setsuna’s) junk.

So if Marine Day (Umi no Hi) is celebrated on the 20th (see the calendar in the background of Karen to see what I’m talking about)…it must be July in universe. Just from a quick Google, it might be 2015 or it might be 1875 (see one of the Google results that says when the holiday began)…then again, Marine Day is celebrated on a Monday…

*raises arm to the sky to block sunshine* Trope count: 3. I need a bingo chart for these tropes, man.

This “outsiders must stay away” reminds me of Shiki, which is…uh, not the best comparison, considering what I’m comparing.

The one with the dandelion hair is…meant to be voiced by Hibiku Yamamura, right? I heard she was switched out because her company didn’t want her to voice the girl, which is the only reason I know this show in the first place.

What a lurid angle Karen’s been shot from…you can focus on her *erhem*(whispers “nonexistent balls”) from here.

“…you can punch or kick me to your heart’s content.” - Well, at least Karen avoids bringing up the trope count (by slapping Setsuna).

“…I’m off the hook.” – No need to spell it out, Mr Obvious. I’m grumpy here plus not really enjoying myself, so if you make any false moves you’re in for the drop.

Why are Setsuna’s eyes so small in comparison to everyone else’s anyway?

Another show I’m going to hate myself for…oh great.

Welp, I’ve read around about the shows on offer and this was one of the more favourable ones. I can see why, because aside from the boob jiggle and random slow mo, it was pretty well-animated.

What’s up with the extra-long ribbon in that girl’s hair, though?

Random yuri moment (on the paper, mentioning the “queen” of something)…? Not what I’m here for, but okay…

Short-haired girl seems to be way too angry. Why so serious?

I don’t have that much badminton knowledge, but I do know YONEX (see bag) is a real badminton brand.

Urgh…those panty shots, boob jiggles etc. are really making me regret watching this. However, there’s a real dynamism to this OP’s visuals that really sparks my interest, which is really saying something.

Apparently “hane” is what you call the shuttlecock in Japanese (aside from the more obvious “shuttle”). Makes sense, as “hane” can also mean “wing”.

“Bad” as in short for “badminton”. Not actually “bad”, y’know?

Strangely, they sexualise Aragaki the least. As if she’s the manliest in the bunch. That’s already true without saying that though, since she’s got the short hair and savagery more typical of a man.

There’s a box where the tilde should be, LOL.

They pretty much make the girls think about either boys or the sport. Can’t girls have more objectives than that? Diversity, people, diversity.

Can we not with the butt shot? Seriously, you can tell this was made by a man with a passion for badminton.

Huh. For once, Aragaki speaks some sense. Considering what’s been bringing me down since before I watched Island, I completely get that feel, Aragaki. Maybe I’ll watch your show, then, if you can tell me how to feel again.

What’s with these feet shots, though? They’re almost as weird as the fanservice ones…

Hmm…the palpable tension…Alright, this gets another episode. If the fanservice is intolerable, I’m outta here.

However, I can see myself getting behind this for sure now that Teruhi’s shown her hand.

Hey, this title card reminds me of Nobunaga no Shinobi! In fact, the two are pretty similar, it’s just the war that’s different.

Despite my slight misgivings, this is a strong contender for best of the season already! Phew…it could even take out Hinamatsuri…and that’s an interesting prospect, huh? Especially because I don’t have a winter show to take that spot.

I checked up what satsuriku means and apparently it means “slaughter”. So yeah, that’s a perfect translation…not to mention I haven’t read ahead on this show, so anything for it is a surprise.

Why would anyone talk to a typewriter? Sure, it responds to your voice, but…eh, I guess anything happens in a horror show.

What’s with this awkward pinning position? Sometimes it’s meant to be sexy, sometimes it’s meant to be horrific, but this…with the doctor’s tongue hanging out, it looks kind of dumb and takes you out of the show.

“I’m a grown-ass man, you know.” – For some reason, I found that line funny.

That’s a lot of blood splattered on the walls…maybe too much for a human…? I’m not a medical specialist, don’t ask me.

Hmm…I don’t know about this one yet. In mystery terms, it’s better than Island – it does pull twists off very well, simply because I can’t really see them coming. However, as a horror, there are a few eyebrow raises involved. It’s good enough to keep for now, but it’s probably going to get lost in the rabble later on.

Harukana Receive 1

I don’t get the green edge of Haruka’s eyes (note I read up on this show with the ANN preview guide beforehand). I mean, why is it green???

Sorry, but there are some reallllllly ugly CGI cars in the background that distract me a lot. It’s pulling me out of the show.

There’s something really CGI and round about the ball. There was this beach volleyball game I remember seeing someone play, and the ball looked exactly like that.

There’s something vaguely annoying about Haruka’s enthusiasm. For the show, it’s nice for the sake of moving plot (and “plot”)…but I find it a bit grating.

Narumi reminds me of Ahagon (Umiko) in New Game.

I’m not quite sure what gas the RBC has in the ED, but I think it might be CO2…
