Just got out of the theater and holy shit
Saw X isn't just the best movie in the Saw franchise. It's one of the best horror films I've seen in years. Even if the rest of my to-watch list flops in theaters for October, I can absolutely see myself watching this thing again to make up for it
We finally got a film that's genuinely about Jigsaw and follows him through the story rather than dangling him at the edges or squashing Tobin Bell into posthumous recordings and flashbacks. It's about him and that brief but potent-powerful twilight between Saw I and Saw II where he was at his most active and personally dangerous.
Without giving too much away, it really cements
One: Why he and his acolytes are so goddamn scary-good at what they do. Better yet, it shows how pants-shittingly terrifying it is for their targets when the Jigsaw crew close in for the abduction
Two: How human and earnest John Kramer is in what he believes, the good and the ill, under all the sadistic torture-murder machinery. The cinematography and the script really work together to light him as a sort of time-misplaced Old Testament figure. If not a priest, then a classical demon who is there first to judge/punish/test people to grisly extremes, and if they pass, to immediately provide aid. All this without shying away from the fact that...
Three: Jigsaw is absolutely a monster; but far from the worst villain on the block.
The whole thing is fantastic top to bottom for fans and newcomers. It could be its own standalone flick. (And, mild spoilers, a certain character is left dangling as a potential future route to another movie. If it's anything like this one, I'd absolutely see a Saw XI)
Anyway. Bravo to Tobin Bell, to Shawnee Smith, and to director Kevin Greutert and writer Josh Stolberg. 5/5 severed limbs, will be looking forward to my nightmares tonight.
Also! For those heading to the theater, there is a mid-credits stinger. Don't miss it!

No one is prepared for how annoying I’m going to be, there’s a ridiculous amount of content in this thing and I’m excited.
Also losing it that apparently there’s a commentary in character for Billy ??? Hello???

Following up on this post about bargain shoujo/josei (and sapphic magical hijinks) titles from Sentai, the items I ordered have arrived and aside from the damage to the Princess Tutu blu-ray spine (seen above) I'm pretty happy.
As with all standard Sentai releases these are barebones blu-rays with little more to offer than the series and some clean OPs/EDs. Princess Tutu is the exception as it has had several previous quality releases and features more on-disc goodies like commentaries, outtakes, and some ballet-focused features.
(Though full disclosure, I only got the standard version of Tutu. Sentai does have a far more elaborate steelbook release for the title that die-hard fans may prefer over this normie set. I like the series but I'm not that keen so I settled for this version.)
Petshop of Horrors is an old title and thus only SD, so what we have in this release is about what I was expecting. Flip Flappers! is pretty disappointing though as the individual Japanese blu-rays featured gorgeous illustrations for the packaging (by tanu and Kojima Takashi both), commentaries on disc, and deluxe settei booklets. I understand not being able to bring over some of this more elaborate content for what is obviously a minimalist release, but the use of one of the promo anime images for the cover over some of the lovely OG art is a shame.
Similarly Anonymous Noise had really plush individual disc releases for its anime adaptation featuring Fukuyama's distinctive art on each cover. US releases don't tend to worry about goodies for all but the biggest anime titles these days, so a stripped back release was about all anyone could expect for a niche Hana to Yume title adaptation. But I feel it's a tad disappointing that, like with Flip Flappers!, the generic promo image for the series on a thin wisp of paper is all you really get in terms of packaging.
In saying that though, the actual episode content for all releases is solid. The actual transfer of newer titles like Flip Flappers! and Anonymous Noise = good and the Princess Tutu remaster looks lovely. Petshop of Horrors is the lowest quality video of the bunch but for $4 USD I've been more than satisfied watching Count D fuck with dumbasses in SD.
Ultimately none of these releases feels as considered as the titles I've purchased from Discotek Media recently, they just don't have that boutique, fan-focused touch. However, I do still think they are worth owning if you are interested in the series mentioned.
Physical media is something I feel very strongly about so I'm obviously biased about buying things when you're in a position to do so, but given the way streaming has stripped back our ability to possess modern titles, rewatch them, and even preserve them, I'm always thankful when I can grab a physical bargain for my collection.

My tokusatsu collection part 5.
I finally completed my Godzilla collection! I got the elusive Godzilla vs. Biollante! Everyone says it's one of the best Godzilla movies, and they weren't kidding! Although I wasn't expecting it to be a musical, and the decision to cast Rick Moranis as Godzilla was a bit strange at first, but you know what? It works! He's the most down to earth and relatable Godzilla ever! And Biollante, let me tell you! She's just a mean green mother from outer space! Definitely the best Godzilla movie! Highly recommended! We need more Godzilla musicals!
No, but seriously, why won't anyone re-release Godzilla vs. Biollante, so I can complete my collection! Go watch Little Shop of Horrors! It's one of my favorite movies as a kid.

God, I just love "It's a Wonderful Life." I love how it's not afraid of darkness and despair. I love how angry it can be and how much anger it allows its everyman main character. I love how it's a romantic drama with heaps of sexual tension, an almost Brechtian play about social injustice, and a quaint comedy set in small-town America with plenty of broad characters who are still allowed moments of pitch-perfect humanity.
Every moment lands. Every choice matters. I cry everytime I see it. The moments just build on top of each other until the final scene.
From:
"This rabble you're talking about... they do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community. Well, is it too much to have them work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath?"
and
"Can I have 17.50?"
and
"Harry wasn't there to save them, because you weren't there to save Harry."
and
"Bert, do you know me?"
until finally
"To my big brother George: the richest man in town."
