This morning, I read the @washingtonpost article about a young autistic black man named Matthew Rushin (@justice4matthewrushin). He was given a 50-year sentence, with 40 years of it suspended, after he was involved in a car crash that left a man injured. Rushin's guilt was decided the moment the Virginia Beach Police stepped on to the scene of the January 4, 2019 accident. None of the 17 Virginia Beach officers followed their own standard operating procedures to transport an injured and mentally confused and distressed person for evaluation. They did not exhibit any understanding of autism in their interpretations of Matthews comments and actions. Instead, they took advantage of his vulnerability as they handcuffed him, questioned him for nearly 4 hours at the scene, lied to him about evidence, isolated him from his family, charged him with 2nd degree murder with a claim that the accident was an intentional attempt to kill himself by deliberately driving head on into another car. Someone just told me this the other day. I didn't get mad, at all. Autism has been around since the 1940's, maybe even earlier. ⁣ ⁣ Moms that suspect that something may be "off" with their child will not get their chid the help they need because of statements like this. ⁣ ⁣ Parents that suspect: Sometimes you may have to go through this journey alone and speak to professionals that can help you help your child. ⁣ ⁣ I understand that this journey is hard, frustrating, painful.... ect.
