Oh no, after years of cynicism about all the Complicated Bad Men of fiction who are unfortunately idolized by a misguided male audience, I've finally found one that I’m falling for.
Captain James Flint is a tormented, violent man who will sacrifice the lives of countless others in the name of his ambitious vision, whose noble qualities even are colored by the demons of his past trauma—
But he’s soooo cool, you guys...

the scene where the cooks of erebus and terror argue about whether to add more salt to the [rotting, lead-poisoned] tins is genuinely one of my favourites in the whole show btw

I know the kneejerk reaction from Black Sails fans to this line from Treasure Island is “but it wasn’t just for money, it was for love,” and that is SO true and valid. But, at the same time, I’d like to posit: imagine it was all just for money. So what?
A squire, someone born into more money than he could ever possibly know what to do with, is going to put down poor people for wanting economic stability???? For being willing to put their lives on the line to achieve it?????? It’s all very reminiscent of “‘You people, incapable of accepting the world as it is,’ says the man to whom the world handed everything.” Like Woodes Rogers, Squire Trelawney sees the pirates as villains for being unwilling to accept their lots in life and refusing to play by civilization’s rules, even though those rules are rigged against them.
YES, it’s about Stories and Civilization’s Warped Narratives and all of that, but also, even if Trelawney was right about this, he would still be wrong, and I think that’s important to keep in mind also.

The Walrus- whiskey & blues. The "official" playlist for Cobble Hill's favorite queer bar. No, we don't take requests. -X, Flint.
yes i made a playlist for a fictional bar to accompany a fanfic. Sue me.
I approached this as Gates asked Flint to assemble a formal Spotify playlist for the bar that patrons could pull up as a reference after they got the upteenth person asking about what was playing. Flint made the playlist based on the bar's vinyl collection which is predominantly blues oriented, they pride themselves on being an alternative music venue for the facet of the queer community that doesn't enjoy the same club music as their cohorts vibe to in other gay bars.
It'll probably update as I go and yes I'll throw a link to it on AO3 .

Never have I ever a post-canon silver fic!!!!
OH I have such a hard time with this. I have not written any postcanon fic, although I expect Another Troy verse will get there eventually. But in general, I can picture Silver a year or two before canon, or a year or two after canon, but *immediately* before or after canon he is very opaque to me. Yes, he's up on the cliffs waiting for Madi. My personal headcanon she does not forgive him. So. That's not sustainable. What does he do after?
I think if I ever addressed this it would be a pretty classic approach with the "I don't care" "You will" treated as prophecy, basically Silver completely falling apart with guilt and self loathing. He'd be a nasty bastard. Because what I think he would imagine he *deserves* is to just go to some big city and basically live on the streets as a cripple. That's obviously his fear. But at the same time he is such a survivor with such an extensive trauma background, it is actually very hard to DECIDE not to do a good job surviving if you are that way and can see the means to survive. So instead I think he would end up basically against his will getting into Situations, and just be awful to everyone and push everyone away because in his own mind he knows deep down that he hurts people and is going to lose them and so has to keep them far way for everyone's good. And he definitely doesn't want to get *involved* in anything again, except, could he stop himself? And I think that's the angle i would take approaching it, reluctantly caring about somebody and then reluctantly helping them and basically kicking and screaming and self sabotaging the whole time, and probably eventually doing something good and self-sacrificing and getting scared and just flat out disappearing.
Could I resist making it a reuinion fic? Who could say? (no, probably not)
Thanks for the ask @b1uetrees! (who has written some very good plantation postcanon that y'all should check out)
Here is the ask game post, if any writing folks want asks, reblog I'll send something along

The buildup in upon our reality had me on the floor! I literally had to put my phone down and process for a Good minute like 😧 🤯. Like it’s been days since I’ve read it and I keep thinking about it! Thank you for writing it and sharing it I feel so blessed to have clicked on the fic deadass
thank you so much for your kind words! ❤️ i LOVE when someone says that they had to take a break to process a fic i've written. so many of my personal favourite fics have an element of being a little bit too much to enjoy comfortably.

Now that we've officially entered TTPD release month and still have minimal info about the album itself somehow...what's your current predictions about what the album is gonna sound like and what it's central theme will be? (Sorry in advance if you've already covered this recently and I missed it lol)
My guess is that it will be Midnights production with Folkmore's lyrics and the theme will be reevaluating long-harbored misconceptions about love i.e. the sharper edges of 'fairytale romances' and overcoming deep wounds that you once thought you deserved to get etc...very Red adjacent if you know what I mean.
Anyways, your(And your other anons) big brain analysis always intrigues me so I was wondering what's your thoughts on all this and why Taylor is insisting on maintaining such thick air of mystery around this project as of yet.
i don't know about production or sound - i just hope florence and her chamber pop had an influence, because i love it very much.
i have all my song-by-song predictions pinned to my blog if you want to take a look.
but overall, based on the statement we received so far (which i assume is part of the prologue, or the thesis of the album), it sounds like this will be her "defense." the whole story. the good, the bad, and the ugly. but not just the story with joe, but a statement defining her perception of her role as an artist/truth-teller.
for our evidence, she is providing:
her tarnished shield, implying she's seen a lot of conflict, but also the tarnished symbol of her family (it makes me think of the shield she created in lover and repurposed for every album since. a literal symbol of the family she was creating?)
her muses, and the pain that her lovers caused her, that she caused herself in pursuit of relationships/acceptance, and the pain of her art being used as a weapon against her (ie, "with every guitar string scar on her hand" meets "watch out dude she'll write a song about you.')
her talismans and charms, and the many way she tried to control or protect herself and her relationships (reminds me of "i'm the wind in our free-flowing sails and the liquor in our cocktails" and "wary of ... charmers, dandies and get-love-quick-schemes.")
the love bombs and this sense of foreboding, evidence that there was intent to harm.
her veins of ink - like they're running black/dark, but also, she's a songwriter, it's her life blood, and it's ink, permanent, the way a record permanently goes into the public consciousness
all's fair in love and poetry - there's no right or wrong in this kind of conflict. it implies war (all's fair in love and war), truth (as in her truth but also the honesty of art), and also a lack of remorse. i mean, why should she feel sorry? it's her art. it's love. there are no rules.
the chairman of ttpd - time to teach some lessons.

Thinking about the actual pirate qualifications of Stede's crew as I see them, and I'm pretty sure they fit into four categories:
1) Definitely a Pirate
Buttons - the man is clearly insane which is how he ended up serving as First Mate to Stede but he's got it all. An obsession with the moon and sea. Psychic bond with seagulls. Extreme violence. Inclinations toward cannibalism that he pretends are survival based 🤣
Roach - support role experience. He's one of the few people who has a distinct job but also clearly knows how to do it AND in a pirate context. He's at home in violent combat.
Black Pete - is he a good pirate? No. But I absolutely believe he has extensive deck swabbing / absolute bottom of the hierarchy experience and his piracy career just keeps going nowhere.
2) Maybe a Pirate
Wee John - very close to the threshold but I don't think he's definitive. Suited to the lifestyle with his love of explosions but doesn't act enough like a guy with a job to have experience with gunnery as a job.
Oluwande - strongest "could go either way" of them all. He canonically seems to have a lot of pirate adjacent experience if he was in tight with Spanish Jackie, but it's not clear if her operation involves piracy or even employs pirates. And his motivation for joining Stede is literally "fugitive getting out of town on the first ship that wouldn't ask questions".
3) Not a Pirate (Relevant Skills)
Jim - possibly controversial but true. Also incidentally why I find framing them as the most competent "pirate" on the Revenge to be a bit strange. Their backstory is a vengeance oath against a bandit gang straight out of a western, their skillset is "stabbing", and they only ended up on a boat due to the fugitive thing. Did they even know anything about sailing when they signed on?
Frenchie - his combat and seafaring aptitude is lacking, but he's an accomplished con man and thief. He's got the people manipulation skills. He's potentially got the brains for some real impressive work. He could make an unconventional but extremely fun pirate.
4) Not a Pirate (No Aptitude)
Lucius - maybe controversial that I said Frenchie might make a good pirate but not Lucius, but I'm sticking by it. The only reason he has a future on a pirate ship is because Stede is insane and emotionally stunted and there are career opportunities in that (which he's got the exact right skillset for). They aren't a piracy career though. Even the generally applicable reading and writing skill isn't going to make him a pirate bookkeeper or whatever - there's a mindset aspect. Roach has it, and Lucius very much doesn't.
The Swede - Does this one need explanation? Stede was hiring anyone.

🤔 Feel free to offer counterpoints 🤔

You’ve heard of Edward and his many Ship Cats- how about Edward The Ship cat. as in the Pirate did something outrageously dumb and got himself turned into a cat- and to make matters more fun- its not even the entire way!
4ft nothing with a tail and kitty legs and the fluffiest ears to ever travel seaward- Captain Kittyway fears nothing in the face of his allies frantic horror. He is Cat and Captain and if he needs to raid a british Brigade for a pint of cream, Blackbeard himself couldn’t keep his paws- er, hands at bay for long!
For those unfamiliar, most of the time when Desmond gets transformed into some kind of animal or creature, there’s a running joke in this tumblr that Edward would pick him up and pass him off as the ship cat regardless of how un-feline he looked.
The crew of Jackdaw believed in curses. Adéwalé believed that some things cannot be understood by mortals such as them but he also thought that the crew would be smart enough not to get cursed.
The crew was smart enough not to get curse, of course.
Their captain however…
“Captain.” Adéwalé said with a grim expression on his face.
“Meow- I mean-” Edward cleared his throat, his cat ears flopping over his head at the action before springing back up, “Yes?”
Adéwalé wished he could just drown in rum and black out.
“I believe it would be better if you were to stay away for now.” Adéwalé said as… not exactly gently… but… politely?
His tone was certainly nicer than usual and he didn’t even want to know if it was because he was so confused by this entire thing or if it was because he had always had a soft spot for cats.
Not that the captain was a cat!
Just…
Cat… adjacent?
“Why?” Edward asked, his tail flicking every once in a while.
“Because, Captain…” Adéwalé could not stress this enough, “The crew is planning on a mutiny.”
“Oh.” Edward did not look surprised at all.
Of course they were.
He had been transformed into this small cat… man… thing.
He was cursed.
And even if he wasn’t cursed (he was absolutely cursed), he was still, for a lack of a better word, weak in the eyes of the crew.
It was the perfect time to mutiny against Captain Edward James Kenway.
“Will you be joining them, Ade?” Edward asked curiously.
Adéwalé had been working for him long enough to see the danger lurking in those cat-like eyes.
He was not going to leave.
It would be better if he did.
He could seek refuge on Blackbeard’s ship. The man would find the entire thing funny and he had always had a soft spot for Captain Kenway.
Or even Mary and Anne’s ship. They’d probably tease him but they won’t shoo him away.
But no.
This was Captain Edward Kenway and he wouldn’t back down so easily.
“If I say yes, would that change your mind?” Adéwalé asked with a sigh, already knowing the answer.
Edward just gave him a grin that was more wild than human.
Adéwalé sighed once more.
It seemed they would have to sail to the nearest settlement and find new crew members afterwards.

this is a purposeless rant but I LOVE suspension of disbelief when it's fun and serves a narrative purpose. the case I'm thinking of specifically is wwdits and ofmd, obviously. but! hear me out.
it seems to be a major theme in taika adjacent projects, or possibly just aotearoan media in general, (obviously those specific projects are jemaine's and david's respectively) that there's a certain ridiculousness inherent to movies and tv. there's an undeniable unmistakable silliness to the very concept of media; it's never going to perfectly mimic or represent real life, and attempting to or claiming that you are is both futile and fails to do the medium justice.
these kinds of productions, ie ofmd, wwdits, wilderpeople, fotc, etc, have humor to them always, a lot of which comes from the format of the piece itself. the period setting of ofmd works because it isn't followed realistically. the romcom structure of it is so beautifully nailed and elevated because of the ridiculousness of the premise. wwdits is by its nature a stupid thing, a documentary crew following around a houseful of vampires.
they don't take themselves too seriously. is what I'm trying to say. wwdits KNOWS it's a foolish little show, so when things are inconsistent or not fully examined, when we have to suspend our disbelief, it feels more like the audience is in on the joke, rather than we're being shortchanged. when a show that advertises itself as a drama, a period piece, etc, makes those kinds of shortcuts, they don't serve a narrative purpose, or at least it's not as clear. it feels more underhanded, more like corporations are cutting corners and not putting care into their product.
for example, the historical inaccuracies in black sails would feel a lot more out of place and disruptive than they do in ofmd. because no one in ofmd is trying to make you believe it's real. the artistry, the framing, the costuming, the exaggerated moon and travel distances, they all feel more like theater than television. so, it stands to reason that we all feel more like an audience at a play, seeing the edges of the curtains and the black beneath the player's feet but willing to ignore them for the art; we are all one collective viewer, holding our breath so we don't disrupt the piece as its constructed around us. instead of other, more self-serious media that closes us out. with glaring cgi and fakery, made to feel alien and far away from our hearts.
so what I mean is, I love you practical effects, I love you improvised lines, I love you exaggerated feelings, I love you theater, I love you deception for the purpose of love. I love you ofmd I love you wwdits.
