Little details within my OCs

Feeling a bit hm after seeing some posts so I thought hey why not list some things you don’t often get to see within my OCs due to art limitations/how they dress! ------------------------------- Rennie: 1: Rennie has some small burn scars on the tips of his fingers due to accidentally touching iron jewelry Eithne was wearing.  2: Rennie’s earrings are actually made of wood and gems due to his sensitivity to metals. Special materials must be used for his and other fae jewelry.  3: Rennie cannot Lie- as Fae can not lie. Everything he says is a roundabout stretch of the truth, thus people view him as a masterful manipulator.  4: Despite being small, Rennie is decently toned due to his Magift practice and being responsible for carrying the heavy firewood/rocks around the family cottage when he’s back home. He’s very much a “surprising things come in small packages” case. 5: When he gets flustered/his emotions are strong- he subconsciously floats.  ----------------------------------------------------------- Folia: 1: Folia is selective Mute! She speaks using sign language and only 4 people have ever heard her speak words. She is big on body language and silently giggles a lot.  2: Like the ancient rose princess, her unique magic manifested in a manner of self sacrifice. Her spell acts like a shield, shielding those in her target with a cage of roses. But in turn, it causes her to drop into a wakeless sleep. This spell is unstable- often happening in times of high emotions than casting it herself. The touch of a loved one is what breaks the spell- which was horrifying for Rennie to figure out the first time it afflicted his baby sister. But this spell also protects the young lady from excessive Blot.  3: She views Malleus almost like a second father- having been tutored under him and given the royal blessing to enter his court. She is a skilled mage well-versed in medicinal magic and traditional Fae workings. This was the Draconia’s gift to the Betels for their long-known sacrifices and strife.  4: A lot of her jewelry were gifts from the court- some being old Draconia heirlooms from the late Mother. She is viewed as the Purity Rose within the court- a ray of pure light in the darkness.  5: She and Silver hold a close bond due to their Sleeping Spells- not to mention their birthdays are 1 day apart from each other. They view it as a Strange Fate. Silver serves to guard her alongside Malleus. -------------------------------------------------------- Yuuta: 1: Yuuta always wears a binder outside of sleeping. They have many different kinds, kindly gifted by ADeu combi and their friends. Their personal favorite one is a spooky bat patterned one, for obvious reasons haha. They also have a special swim shirt with one built into it. 2: Yuuta’s body is covered with the scars of the Yuus’ past lives. A lot are featured around their neck/arms but they are scattered all across their body. As well as gaining a few of their own.  3: They have a very unnerving empty stare when lost in thought. Overall, Yuuta’s presence in a room generally causes a lot of unease and discomfort to the other students, though those who do not know him well can’t understand why. It’s the aura energy surrounding them. A person who gives off they do not Belong.  4: Yuuta has stretchmarks on their stomach and thighs- slightly pudgy on their lower stomach but with lanky limbs.  5: Yuuta’s earring gem is actually embedded with magic! In the light- it glistens and shows fragments of the timeline within the crystal! At first glance- it looks iridescent.  ---------------------------------------------------------- Eithne: 1: Eithne actively wears Vil’s cosmetic/skincare line- despite viewing him as a rival and being jealous of freedom to be what he wishes.  2: Being a passionate dancer, Eithne burns through around 3-4 pairs of pointe shoes a week practicing in the Pomefiore ballroom. However, his overblot permanently damages his feet- rendering him no longer able to professionally dance.  3: His hair is actually braided into a rose shape around his bangs area! A reference to the homeland he despises but he can not escape from. As much as he wishes he could escape, The Queendom of Roses is his home. A habit he has yet to break within his identity. 4: Eithne is a Frequent visitor of the Mostro Lounge- much to Azul’s pleasure. He loves tuning in to other people’s business, and the lounge is the best place to see it get laid out in the open.

fire burn, & cauldron bubble.

Bottles clinked from behind the slightly-ajar door of Moonspell Apothecary's basement. A fire burned merrily in the clay cookstove, illuminating the room in its flickering orange light. The room was lined with shelves and worktables, filled with various large jars of bizarre contents. Some were easily identifiable herbs, others... not so much. Gnarled roots here, amanita caps there.

At the alchemy table, a slender woman worked in an apron and well-worn house shoes. Her hair was pulled back into a bun, and several of her trusty sun-charged stones were laid out on the table before her. She looked briefly to the small cauldron and watched the steam rise, listening for a moment to hear if it had begun to bubble.

Not yet... but soon. She had to hurry.

She turned back to her work, her hands reaching for the centrepiece stone. It was a beautiful fire opal. Each facet beneath the polished, smooth surface glimmered brightly, as if they were dancing flames. Her fingers closed around it for a moment, feeling its warmth and weight in her palm. The stone was smaller than most of its kind, almost swallowed entirely within her hand.

Elsinore closed her eyes, exhaling softly as she stood before the table, focusing. She'd gotten good at this part, feeling the stone's heat pass through her hand, and her magic reaching back out to meet it. She felt them unify, a surge jolting through her body, and began to speak under her breath. The spell was ancient as time, but the words still held their power.

"Ignitum lapidem, redde draconi vitale suum."

It began to glow, light bursting forth to cast the room in its brilliant rays, and the vampire smiled triumphantly, opening her eyes. She kept them squinted against the brightness, moving to drop the stone into the cauldron; the water had begun to boil. Once it lay beneath the surface of the water, she opened her eyes fully and ran for her ingredients.

She returned once she had them, muttering under her breath.

"Acorn," in it dropped, once she'd ground it into a fine powder.

"Adderstongue., and alkanet." She'd used these whole, but dried; both the stems and pretty flowers.

She stopped to stir it with a small wooden paddle, watching as the water begun to darken, and the rays of the stone became murky. No dimmer, but obscured as the herbs boiled. After a moment she added dried, crushed apple, watching the powder dissipate into the mixture.

After thirty minutes, it was time to add balsam fir, three clusters of the spiky, densely packed needles. A sprig of basil, an ear of barley. A bay leaf, unicorn's blood, betel nut powder, and finally four dried dandelion flowers. She stirred again, beginning a second incantation.

"Sana spiritum, seda animam. Depelle aegram, antiquam renova."

Her brow creased, hands splayed over the brew as she moved them to and fro, sparks shooting from her palms and hissing as they passed through the surface of the potion. The glowed beneath the liquid and then died.

She had one last step, before it was complete. It was the most important part. She thought for a moment, before choosing how it should taste.

"Turn this dark potion fine; like the darkest, decadent red wine." Red it turned, darkening until the opal's light slipped from the stone and into the potion, making it glow. Removing the cauldron from the heat, she waited a moment before straining and transferring it by funnel into a tall, slender glass bottle. The red depths shimmered like velvet, even in the darkness of the lab. Elsinore smiled wickedly, clasping the warm bottle in her hands.

She must deliver it tonight. It was at its most potent once it had fully cooled.

Why didn’t the Gopis go to Mathura to meet Krishna whom they truly love?

It is not easy to understand the love of the gopis of Vrindavana. It operates on reverse psychology. Their love is at the peak of selflessness. It is this selfless love for Krishna that stopped them from going to Mathura. Let me elaborate.

The answer to your question confidentially lies in the following verse of Srimad Bhagavatam

tāḥ kiṁ niśāḥ smarati yāsu tadā priyābhir vṛndāvane kumuda-kunda-śaśāṅka-ramye reme kvaṇac-caraṇa-nūpura-rāsa-goṣṭhyām asmābhir īḍita-manojña-kathaḥ kadācit

[Gopīs speak] Does Kṛṣṇa recall those nights in the Vṛndāvana forest, lovely with lotus, jasmine and the bright moon? As we glorified His charming pastimes, He enjoyed with us, His beloved girlfriends, in the circle of the rāsa dance, which resounded with the music of ankle bells.- Srimad Bhagavatam 10.47.43

Why are gopis remembering the beauty of the forests of Vrindavana? Srila Vishwanatha Chakravarti Thakura gives the following deep realization about this verse:

The gopīs knew that no place could be as beautiful as Vṛndāvana. Nowhere else in the universe could one find such a charming scene as the Vṛndāvana forest, which was scented with pious flowers and illumined by the full moon’s light reflected from the serene waves of the sacred Yamunā River.

No one loved Kṛṣṇa as much as the gopīs, and thus no one else could understand Him as well. The gopīs rendered intimate service to Kṛṣṇa that only they could perfect. Thus the gopīs were distraught to think that Lord Kṛṣṇa was bereft of Vṛndāvana and bereft of their service.

Free of all material lust, they were overwhelmed with disappointment because they could not give Kṛṣṇa happiness through their loving service. They simply could not imagine Kṛṣṇa enjoying anywhere else as He did in Vṛndāvana in their company.

Gopis knew that Krishna is most pleased only when He is in the forests of Vrindavana. So, they somehow wanted to bring Krishna back to Vrindavana and thus render service in Vrindavana. Certainly, gopis could have gone to Mathura and met Krishna but that would have been very selfish of them. Gopis didn’t want to go to Mathura just to relieve their burning feeling of separation. Gopis wanted to relieve the burning feeling of separation that Krishna was experiencing away from Vrindavana. So, gopis wanted to make sure that Krishna comes back to Vrindavana, for only then Krishna would become happy. How will Krishna remain happy in Mathura? That was the thought process of gopis.

Srila Vishwanatha Chakravarti Thakura further explains. Gopis thought

Where is there such a river bank (like Yamuna) in Mathura? Where else is the music, song and dance (as Rasa dance) so pleasing to Kṛṣṇa? The intimate talks we had with Kṛṣṇa were praised by the heavenly women riding in their aeroplanes. Do the vile women of Mathura know how to make such conversations with Him? Who in Mathura knows how to make unguents, flower crowns, garlands, and betel nut preparations for Kṛṣṇa’s pleasure?

By remaining in Mathura, Kṛṣṇa’s happiness has completely disappeared. We will die in disappointment just thinking of Kṛṣṇa’s lack of bliss.

If there were some woman in Mathura like us who could please Kṛṣṇa, then He could enjoy dancing with her, playing His flute and other pastimes. If we heard that such a woman existed, then we could remain in Vrndavana happily, even though separate from Kṛṣṇa.

So, gopis didn't mind staying in Vrindavana if they had found Krishna happy in Mathura. But they knew that Krishna cannot be made happy in Mathura by the women of Mathura. Krishna can only be happy in the idyllic settings of Vrindavana and especially when He takes service from us. Thus, gopis thought

‘’Let us stay here in Vrindavana and cry. Maybe, seeing our crying, Krishna will find some pity on us and return to Vrindavana. Then, seeing the Vrindavana, Krishna will again become happy.’’

Thus gopis somehow wanted to bring Krishna back to Vrindavana for the sole happiness of Krishna. No one can understand the selfless love of the gopis. As I said before, it operates on reverse psychology. The mood of the gopis has been beautifully expressed in the following verse

nā gaṇi āpana-duḥkha sabe vāñchi tāṅra sukha tāṅra sukha āmāra tātparya

more yadi diyā duḥkha tāṅra haila mahā-sukha sei duḥkha mora sukha-varya

I do not mind my personal distress. I only wish for the happiness of Kṛṣṇa, for His happiness is the goal of my life. However, if He feels great happiness in giving me distress, that distress is the best of my happiness.- Chaitanya Charitamrta, Antya Lila 20.54

Devdas chapter 15 (of 16)

Chandramukhi and Devdas (Dir: Bhimal Roy 1955)

In this next to last chapter, we follow Chandramukhi from her new quiet country life back to Calcutta where she finally tracks down Devdas who's taken a turn for the worse.

I found it interesting, that while the Hindi word for liver, कलेजा, is used consistently in this novel as the organ reacting to strong emotions (as opposed to the heart) when talking about Devdas' waning health, the word लीवर is used to speak about the literal organ.

I had some trouble translating properly the following two sentences describing Chanramukhi's yard:

आँगन साफ़-सुथरा है। रमा बागदी की बेटी रोज़ उसे लीप-पोत जाती है। The yard was swept and wiped clean - Rama Bagdi's daughter did that every day.

I guess लीप-पोत करना is maybe an old or rarely used verb for sweeping, and it was impossible to find it as such in any online dictionaries. I'm also a bit confused as to why the verb जाना is used in this sentence.

I did find, however, that लीप-पोत is used in the saying लीप-पोत कर बराबर करना or लीप-पोत बराबर करना which appears to mean 'to make equal by removing any bumps' or in less literal sense to gloss over or cover up matters, akin to sweeping matters under a rug - this saying appears in some Tweets and news:

कुछ गिरफ्तारियों, FIR के बाद सारा मामला लीप-पोत कर बराबर कर दिया जाता है। After a few arrests and FIR, the whole matter is glossed over.

FIR = First Information Report is the document the police in India write when they receive information about more serious offences.

Oh, and I stumbled upon a fascinating article about traditional teeth blackening in South East Asia when I googled around trying to find a translation for मिस्सी as seen in a description of Devdas' sister-in-law:

दोनों होंठ और दाँत पान और मिस्सी से लगभग काले हो गए हैं। Her lips and teeth were blackened by the juice of betel nuts.

Tongue cancer is one of the oral (mouth) cancers that occurs when malignant cells divide and start to grow out of control to form a tumour. One of the prime causes is the excessive use of tobacco and alcohol, chewing betel, and improper oral hygiene. Cigarette filter: Smoking is not recommended from a medical point of view, but still people do that and that’s fine. The filters support people to smoke, by preventing them from inhaling harmful smokes too much. So cigarette filters have contradictory nature, and I like that. The tiny filters can also float in water, although they are as useless as straws when you are drowning.

When they are alive they are a bit slimy on the surface, and when they are soap and used to wash hands they also get slimy and get smoother as it goes. Dried sea cucumbers were so valuable that they were once used as a replacement for money, I heard. 

Water chestnut: I found them in Shanghai too, they grow floating in fresh water in Eurasia. The intriguing shape of the nut resembles many things, like bulls heads, flying bats and Indian samosas. By that time of the show in Shanghai, I was like, well, I shouldn’t be too picky with too strict criteria for choosing soap shapes, they are anyway temporary shapes, somehow they emerge in front of you and wash hands and disappear, how they look can vary, as far as they are soap and offer you some calm time and space to wonder about ourselves and surrounding realities. Anyway they are cute and have strange shapes. 

Found stones: I liked the way a Lao guy once told me how he spends his pastime; “...well.., eat, sleep, eat, sleep, and maybe throw stones...” Stones are everywhere, no one has never seen a stone, I believe. But how many of us spend our spare time throwing stones? Luxury. The stones and a piece of broken pot are found in my terrace garden, they are probably to be put in the bottom of plant pots, or if they are lucky some of them are kept for throwing. I would also like to see how they get smoother when they are used as soap, that might give you a sense of time passing a little faster while stones are also getting smoother at a much slower pace.

-Soap Ingredients: As for the ingredients, I started with hay which is used to clean garden ponds preventing algae from flourishing and spreading. I extracted hay essence and added it to soaps I made in Pittenweem. I guess I wanted to somehow commit to the environment, not only washing human hands. I was also interested in the old saying mentioned above. I then brewed various teas to sample extracts. Teas, for me, are great pastimes and offerings, they cure and relax you, with numerous variations. Now I take care of some kinds of plants in my terrace garden, which are traditionally used for medicinal purposes, such as Saffron, Safflower, Indigo plant, Lemongrass, and other herbs. I brewed them and other spices and herbs I usually consume in the kitchen. The latest work is made from my daily life in the garden and kitchen.

Sand Grains Foundation, our CSR wing organized a mass tree plantation drive on November 4, 2022, as part of CDE Asia’s efforts to extend the lifespan of natural resources by achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2030. The exercise was carried out in collaboration with Hari Mitti Foundation which aims to facilitate all-round urban and rural welfare under its wide umbrella of activities.

Established in 2021, Sand Grains Foundation has always fostered sensitivity towards our resources – natural and human. The Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that promotes environmental sustainability, self-reliance in the youth workforce, and equitable distribution of healthcare benefits among the poor and deprived. The plantation campaigns revolve around planting and nurturing trees thereby aiding the development and use of renewable energy resources.

Speaking on the occasion, Sanjay Singh, Director of Sand Grains Foundation, said, “We believe that natural resources must be replenished organically and tree plantation is one of the most pertinent ways to offset carbon emissions, protect the environment and promote sustainable living.  We are delighted to see everyone come together and join us on this noble cause. ”

The entire team of CDE Asia Group along with their friends and family gathered at NKDA Verge 6 in Kolkata’s New Town area to plant trees and enhance the city’s green cover. Around 450 saplings of different plants and shrubs were planted. The plantation included trees like Neem, Peepal, Sal, Banyan, Betel Nut, Amla and Palm. The event was followed by an excellent lunch and a lucky draw. There were lots of giveaways that were handed out to the CDE Asia family. The gifts were distributed by Mr. Sanjay Singh. The last leg of the goodies ceremony was reserved for Mega giveaways for the event.
