Okay!!!!!!!!! I watched GO2!!!!!!!!! I’m once again feeling insane

Guess who’s back? Back again! Anddddddd posting for the second time in a day. Wow, I guess there is a first time for everything.

My Classic Monster Headcanons for the Casper Crew + Finn

Bruce Yamada
-he’d most definitely be a werewolf, like full-on 1985 Teen Wolf over here
-he’d try to keep it secret bc of his family, but the other Grabbed and Gwen would all know relatively quickly
-if he were to suddenly become a werewolf - whether that be bitten or activated over time - there wouldn’t be much of an adjustment period, he’d accept being a werewolf pretty quickly
-true to most canine fashion, he’s very good with people, which is why he’s so popular and well-liked
-there are dark sides to every coin tho, he can be very passive aggressive on his time of the month and his heats are no joke. It’s just better to steer clear of him until his head is on straight and he’s more sociable. Doesn’t matter if you’re friend, family, lover, or foe; Bruce is just very angry and aggressive during the full moon
Robin Arellano
-may be a shock to some, but Robin is a zombie
-he may be the toughest kid in school, but he honestly doesn’t look it at all, he looks totally unassuming to strangers
-like Bruce, he’d take to being a zombie pretty quickly and almost seamlessly, he likes how it makes it easier for him to think and the energy he gets from it
-most assume that zombies are slow and sluggish, and while he isn’t the best at math, the rest couldn’t be less true
-on the other hand, his craving for raw meat is pretty inconvenient in fights. And the only thing that he misses about being human is sleeping. For him, sleep was the only real way for him to relax and let his tough guy persona rest; he can’t do that anymore and it frustrates him. Speaking of, try not to frustrate him, if you thought he was bad before in his fights, the lack of exhaustion and need for a break makes him even more fearsome and relentless in fights
Billy “Paperboy” Showalter
-coincidentally, or not, Paperboy would be a mummy
-Paperboy does not take to being a mummy well at all, actively hates on it for a good while, and does his best to keep it a secret from everyone
-luckily, or unluckily, for him, he has all of eternity to get used to it
-he does enjoy the invulnerability, and some of the powers he gets, but he absolutely loathes the random piles of sand he finds in his room or on his person
-no one knows if it’s intentional or not - though the Grabbed and Gwen have their suspicions - but sometimes Paperboy getting what he wants goes too far. Almost as if he doesn’t care about others and their free will. In the cases where he doesn’t get his way, it is infinitely worse for other people around him. Swarms of locusts buzz and bite his classmates. sand finds its way into carpets, hair, food, and in bodies. Blood infects and dilutes the town water supply when Paperboy is angry. And no one knows for sure how it happens
Griffin Stagg
-not that much different than a ghost, Griffin is a poltergeist
-he may not have a large impact physically, but you can be damn sure the world feels it when he’s near
-he doesn’t really seem to have much of a reaction to his new circumstances, he kind of likes to just roll with the punches
-it doesn’t really matter if he tried to keep it a secret, he doesn’t have anyone to tell it to besides the Grabbed
-out of all of the Grabbed, Griffin has the most trouble controlling his abilities - even worse than Paperboy, supposedly - and he doesn’t know why. The only real ability that he has no trouble with is entering the spirit dimension. Sometimes he has dark thoughts about being there, he feels like he belongs there, alone, and always has. On his darker days, you should expect rain storms, inanimate objects moving around, random tragedies, and all around mayhem. It’s not Griffin’s fault, he honestly can’t help it. Right?
Vance Hopper
-vance would be Frankenstein, you all know it
-over-aggressive over little things, violent when provoked, and gets an unnecessarily bad rep
-he hates being Frankenstein actively, despite getting used to his situation the quickest, everyone knows and god help you if you remind him; he’ll go from 0-100 alarmingly quickly
-hates looking into mirrors, pictures, and changing his clothes, he hates any reminder of what happened to him, people already considered him a violent, monstrous freak before. Now he just looked the part
-vance’s temper is off the charts as a re-animated being. He was no where near as volatile before, but now, every simple thing sets him off. Especially fire, or his own reflection. Vance likes being left alone, likes being comfortable in his surroundings. Now, he’s not even comfortable in his own skin, mostly bc its not even his for the most part. The worst part is, he’ll suffer forever, his strength and durability will be his greatest weakness, and make him the biggest threat
Finn Blake
-last but not least, finney would be a vampire
-not exactly Nosferatu, but pretty damn terrifying when the situation calls for it, as we’ve seen
-never truly gets used to being a vampire, and a large part of him will always partially miss being human, but he does enjoy being a vampire
-finney likes that he no longer has to be afraid of bullies bc he’s strong enough to best them, and fast enough to run away if he wanted to, its actually bc of this that people find out about him relatively quickly. Cmon, everyone is gonna notice when the school’s resident punching bag/loser suddenly kicks ass
-still, as kind and demure as Finn might seem, he’s still a deadly and bloodthirsty creature of the night. It’s not his fault he gets hungry. He didn’t choose to become a vampire. Honestly, if the entire town knows of his peculiar...proclivities, you’d think they’d know better than to go out at night. Where Finn is lurking, hungry and waiting. Plus, he’s not exactly good at controlling his strength or speed, so if he accidentally broke Moose’s jaw that one time, he didn’t mean to. It was an accident, after all

misc. headcanons:
my current thoughts are that revie hasn't actually killed anyone before - at least not intentionally. the first time she's done enough intentional harm to kill was during the attack on her clan that killed her keeper, even so that was in self defence. HOWEVER i do think she is the sort to be willing to kill out of protection and revenge. it's never her first course of action but it's something she can be driven to do under the right circumstances.
if she chose to kill for revenge, i don't think she'd make it a quick thing. i can only think of her avenging, say, a fallen clan member for example. a loved one. i think she would drag out the killer's death for as long as she could.
as one of the inquisitor's part members, revie is probably extremely squishy lol. at least at first. she casts some pretty noice barriers & her healing abilities are sweet but someone's gonna have to watch her back while she's keeping an eye on everyone else. (she does, ofc, have some offence abilities but it's more the lack of battle practice having to fend off so many foes at once, etc. but i imagine he has to learn, and quickly, through her travels. i imagine she does become stronger with experience.)
switching gears! revie picked up sewing/tailoring in her youth, mostly because the clan needs to be resourceful, but she found that quite enjoys sewing her own clothes. i imagine she takes a lot of interest in the way she presents herself, so she intentionally dresses well and perhaps even stylishly by dalish standards (?) - most of her outfits are made by her or are hand-me-downs that she's fixed up for herself. nice fabric is always a lovely gift for her.
probably finds orlesian fashion absolutely fascinating though it may not be her cup of tea.
she also loves applying makeup on herself and others though she doesn't do it often at all. she has a small collection of pigments (i'm gonna say some are probably not skin-safe but they don't know that) but would love to get her hands on some more.
if she is wearing makeup on a daily basis, it's likely at most just something like kajal/kohl (powdered eyeliner that's applied with a stick applicator) applied the night before/slept on and the excess washed off in the morning. it'd give off a soft smokey look.
definitely collects jewelry, whether gifted, bought or handmade, and takes v good care of them (organized neatly in boxes and whatnot)
doesn't enjoy the pain of piercing/tattoos hence why she has minimal piercings. dreads when the clan-mother tells her she has earned more vallaslin bc big ouch (she is proud of her vallaslin! she just! wants it to not hurt!!)

so so so I was on my way to work this morning blasting music right. not paying any particular attention to anything, just letting my playlist shuffle through bc I still had major fog brain and didn't think of anything past hitting play and what not.
Well suddenly mantra by bring me the horizon came on and it snapped me awake, particularly the part right after the second chorus that goes like "I know it doesn't make a lot of sense, all I'm asking for's a little bit of faith" bc my brain was like !!! major miraak and ldb vibes holy shit (which btw this entire blog is responsible for my new obsession with him so thanks)
like that part just hits soooo well for that. the lbd asking miraak to just have faith in them!!! and leave apocrypha with them. I had it on repeat for hours today and it's just been stuck it my head for the rest
aaa!! i don't usually listen to new BMTH but you're so right about this song. it's been added to my Miraak playlist. it goes so well. i'll link it here for anyone who wants to listen
"I promise I can save you."
The Last Dragonborn's words rattled Miraak's bones. Their hand was covered in blood and ink when they thrust it toward him. Eyes full of desperation watched his every move over the Black Book sitting open in their lap, dark magic whirling and twisting over its pages.
He couldn't trust them. They were his enemy. He belonged in Apocrypha even if it crumbled. He wanted nothing more than to squash their obnoxious hopefulness. He couldn't be saved, didn't know if he wanted to be.
"Close your eyes and listen carefully, Dragonborn." Miraak put every ounce of hatred into his words. They didn't even flinch. "I am bound to this realm. You cannot save me."
"I'm the only one that can save you." Their hand grabbed his, warm skin sticking together and Miraak was disgusted by the way his heart leapt. He'd stomped down his feelings for so long. He wouldn't allow himself to feel that way about the Last Dragonborn.
"How do you expect to do this?" That damned smile was on their face at his words. He knew he'd lost to them yet again. He had spent lifetimes building himself into an unbeatable foe but failed time and time again when met with the Last Dragonborn.
"I know it doesn't make a lot of sense." They babbled and gripped his hand so tight he swore he'd lose feeling. "All I'm asking for is a little bit of faith."
Their words took his breath away. The Book's green glow cast eerie shadows across the Last Dragonborn's face when they looked over at him and Miraak caught a glance of what they could have been. He imagined them at his side at the height of his power, matching thrones in his palace, the unstoppable force they could have become had they met under different circumstances.
"Can you believe in me?"
It's so easy to believe in them. Miraak felt himself nodding before he could think better of it. Apocrypha's seas beat against their platform and for the first time in ages he felt hope. It was a dangerous feeling but the Last Dragonborn gave him hope.
The world turned upside down. Miraak was nauseous when he tumbled through empty space, flashes of green and black stealing his vision when he succumbed to the power of the Black Book. The Last Dragonborn clung to his hand through it all. They never let him go.
Landing back on Skyrim knocked the air from his lungs. The bright sun overhead blinded him and old smells he'd long forgotten filled his nose. Trees towered overhead and Miraak waited for his vision to stop swirling.
Despite his worst fears the Last Dragonborn never let go of Miraak's hand. They squeezed his fingers to call his attention. He hesitated - his mask had been lost in their last battle. He wasn't sure what they saw when they looked at his face, if he'd become some horrible monster like the Seekers.
Their eyes crinkled when they smiled up at him. Miraak knew he was staring but couldn't help himself - the grime covering their face did nothing to stop his heart from hammering. He even felt a bit guilty for leaving so many wounds on them.
"How did you do that?" He whispered, trying to figure out how they'd cast a calming or persuasion enchantment without him noticing. He knew the truth but had to bury it. He couldn't have feelings for the Last Dragonborn. Absolutely not.
"Do what?" They laughed, rolling closer to Miraak over the dirty ground of whatever forest they'd landed in. "I just talked to you. You're the one that listened."
They were dangerous. Far too charismatic for their own good. Miraak's heart leapt when the Dragonborn leaned close to him, studying his face. They didn't seem horrified so it couldn't be too bad, though he didn't feel inclined to find a mirror anytime soon.
"You're too persuasive." Miraak felt himself smiling, a plan already forming in his mind. His last plot had only failed because he was working against the Last Dragonborn, but on the same side they could conquer everything. "Do you want to start a cult with me?"

Streams of Living Water
I recently caught up with an old high school friend over a lunch date. This friendship has stood the test of time and one that I continue to cherish. Post the lunch I received the following SMS from this person “All I have to say is keep on keeping on. Water finds is course and you my friend have the energy of the Ganges… xxx.”
This lovely compliment reminded me of Sun Tzu’s quote from his famous book The Art of War:
“Water shapes its course according to the nature of the ground over which it flows; the soldier works out his victory in relation to the foe whom he is facing."
‘The Art of War’ is a Chinese military treatise written by Sun Tzu in the 6th century BC. It is one of the oldest and most successful books on strategy. It focuses on the use of strategy, tactics, and information to outmanoeuvre and defeat an enemy. The book also deals with issues of leadership, logistics, and the psychological aspect of warfare. It has been influential in both military and business circles and is still widely referenced today. The principles outlined in the book such as the importance of flexibility and adaptability, the value of intelligence and understanding conflict and the importance of speed, surprise, and the use of force at the right time are still relevant today.
This quote by Sun Tzu suggests that both water and soldiers must adapt to their surroundings in order to be successful. Just as water flows and shapes its course based on the terrain it is traveling over, soldiers must also adapt their strategies and tactics to the enemy they are facing. The quote highlights the value of flexibility and adaptability in achieving victory. It suggests that a successful soldier or leader must be able to adapt their approach based on the specific circumstances and the conflict they are facing, rather than relying solely on fixed plans or strategies.
In the context of everyday life, Tzu's quote about adaptability can be interpreted as a reminder to be flexible and open to change. Just as water adapts to the terrain it is flowing over, we too must be willing to adapt to the different circumstances and challenges that we face in our daily lives.
Adaptability remains a most valuable skill for personal and professional growth, as it allows us to learn and grow from new experiences and overcome adversity in our path. It also helps us to become more resourceful in the face of change, whether it be a change in our personal circumstances, at work or in our relationships. It helps us to be more open to new opportunities, rather than getting stuck in old patterns and ways of thinking.
Tzu's quote encourages us to be flexible and adaptable in our thinking and approach to life, which will help us to navigate the challenges that come our way more effectively and ultimately lead to a more fulfilling and successful life.
I often say that you are your most important relationship. The greatest challenge we take is the journey inward. And we have a responsibility to attend to the tensions of the conflict from within.
To overcome one's inner foe, or negative self-talk, my advice would be to first recognise and acknowledge the existence of these negative thoughts. It's important to understand that everyone has an inner critic to some degree, and it's a normal part of our human experience.
Once you become aware of your negative thoughts, you can start to challenge them. Ask yourself if the thoughts are based on facts or just thoughts, and if they are true or not. Often, negative thoughts are based on assumptions or past experiences, rather than reality.
Next, try to reframe your thoughts in a positive light. Instead of dwelling on negative thoughts, try to focus on the positive aspects of a situation or yourself. This will help to shift your mindset and change the way you view the world within yourself and the world around you.
Another helpful strategy is to practice some form of mindfulness. Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment, and it can be helpful in reducing negative self-talk and increasing self-awareness. An important deep tuning in. By becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings, you can gain more control over them and find more peace and contentment in your life.
Lastly, it is important to take care of yourself physically and emotionally. Get enough sleep, exercise regularly, eat well and make time for relaxation, hobbies and time with friends and family. A healthy body and mind can greatly impact your mental well-being and help to reduce negative thoughts and emotions.
To overcome the inner voice conflict, it is important to recognise and acknowledge negative thoughts, challenge, and reframe them, engage in practices and habits that transform.
Living a life like water as Tzu describes, ultimately means living in a state of flow or harmony with the currents of the present moment. Just as water adapts to its environment and takes the shape of its container, we too should be open to change and be able to adapt to new situations, revealing our possibility. This includes being open to new ideas and perspectives and being willing to change our plans or approach when necessary.
Water remains a vital element of living, and it creates balance, it is essential for life, and it is a source of inspiration, healing, and tranquillity. Similarly, we should strive to create balance in our lives, and to be in harmony with ourselves and others.
So, when you turn your piercing, critical eye towards your own life—neither able to defend nor look away it is time to focus on your inner truth, your true north. If, when you are prepared to look deep within, you use words like can’t, or tomorrow or but when referring to your self-worth, because of what you don’t have, check yourself and change your mindset in this moment conflict. If you don’t, you’ll drive yourself to a nervous collapse.
Re-frame your excuses for simply being you. Transform them from impossible roadblocks, or the enemy, into challenges that encourage authentic contemplation and personal inner growth. Seeing the big picture is more than just discovering your why. Find what you want in all areas of your life and see where each of your goals fit into that framework.
Remember that a coward is a person who avoids meaningful inner truth exploration and engages in actions that simply foster fear. A courageous person is one who finds meaning by tackling it head-on and honours their truth, the truth.
In 2019 I had the pleasure of hearing American Research Professor and Author Brené Brown speak in Sydney. She spoke about the fact that sure, life can be scary and difficult at times. And that living abundantly calls each of us to have tough conversations and brave hearts with self. Nonetheless never lose sight that courage is contagious and requires us to take a leap of faith by turning up and being brave enough to abandon our amour and become the man (or woman) in the arena, a reference to this famous 1910 quote from Theodore Roosevelt:
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”
If you are not the hero of your own story you are missing the whole point of your humanity. Don’t want to be like someone who already exists. Enjoy your difference. Choose the courage to know that you are enough.
Triumph is about prevailing over one’s fears or foes and rejoicing, proudly, in affirming self, growth and all achievements, no matter how big or small. When you give yourself permission to act, you gain new mastery and are closer to being victorious in love, learning and life, your life.
Use your inner river flow, your Ganges energy to become a bearer of great possibility, compassion, and unconditional love. If we want to advance in our life, then, we must constantly be missionaries of love ― of self, place and the other. It is our quest and hope that we can bring positive change to the lives of the other, as well as our own. Become the face of streams of living water.
And live a life where you are prepared to always show up, face your foe, and dare greatly.

hi! so we have established at this point that you have A Lot Of thoughts about antony and brutus. but how does caesar (julius, not the little bitch octavian) play into that? bc like. my knowledge and impression of them is very limited and mainly constructed from watching hbo rome and idk. i think it'd be fun to throw caesar in the mix. love all the art and writing on your blog btw! have a nice day.
Hey, okay! So this used to be over 30 pages long (Machiavelli and Caligula got involved and that's when things got out of hand), but through the power of friendship and two late night writing dates fueled by coffee, I’ve cut it way down to under 10. Many thanks to the people who listened to me ramble about it at length, and also to a dear friend for helping me cut this down to under ten pages!

And quickly, a Disclaimer: I’m not an academic, I’m not a classicist, I’m not a historian, and I spend a lot of time very stressed out that I’ve tricked people into thinking I’m someone who has any kind of merit in this area. It's probably best to treat this as an abstract character analysis!
On the other hand, I love talking about dead men, so, with enthusiasm, here we go!
For this, I’m going to cut Shakespeare and HBO Rome out of the framework and focus more on a historical spin.
Caesar is a combination of a manipulator and a catalyst. A Bad Omen. The remaining wound that’s poisoning Rome.
Cassius gets a lot of the blame for Brutus’ turn to assassination, but it overlooks that Brutus was already inclined towards political ambition, as were most men involved in the political landscape of the time.
Furthermore, although Sulla had actually raised the number of praetorships available from six to eight, there were still only two consulships available. There was always the chance that death or disgrace might remove some of the competition and hence ease the bottleneck. But, otherwise, it was at the top of the ladder that the competition was particularly fierce: whereas in previous years one in three praetors would have gone on to become consul, from the 80s BC onwards the chances were one in four. For the senators who had made it this far, it mattered that they should try to achieve their consulship in the earliest year allowed to them by law. To fail in this goal once was humiliating; to fail at the polls twice would be deemed a signal disgrace for a man like Brutus.

The way Caesar offered Brutus political power the way that he did, and Brutus accepting it, locked them into the assassination outcome.
Here is a man who’s built his entire image around honor and liberty and virtu, around being a staunch defender of morals and the republic
In these heated circumstances, Brutus composed a bitter tract On the Dictatorship of Pompey (De Dictatura Pompei), in which he staunchly opposed the idea of giving Pompey such a position of power. ‘It is better to rule no one than to be another man’s slave’, runs one of the only snippets of this composition to survive today: ‘for one can live honourably without power’, Brutus explained, ‘but to live as a slave is impossible’. In other words, Brutus believed it would be better for the Senate to have no imperial power at all than to have imperium and be subject to Pompey’s whim.

At the same time, however, Brutus had gained his position via extremely un-republican means: appointment by a dictator rather than election by the people. As the name of the famous career path, the cursus honorum, suggests, political office was perceived as an honour at Rome. But it was one which had to be bestowed by the populus Romanus in recognition of a man’s dignitas.69 In other words, a man’s ‘worth’ or ‘standing’ was only really demonstrated by his prior services to the state and his moral qualities, and that was what was needed to gain public recognition. Brutus had got it wrong. As Cicero not too subtly reminded him in the treatise he dedicated to Brutus: ‘Honour is the reward for virtue in the considered opinion of the citizenry.’ But the man who gains power (imperium) by some other circumstance, or even against the will of the people, he continues, ‘has laid his hands only on the title of honour, but it is not real honour’.70
Brutus may have secured political office, then, but he had not done so honourably; nor had he acted in a manner that would earn him a reputation for virtue or everlasting fame.

Brutus in the image that he fashioned for himself was not compatible with the way Caesar was setting him up to be a political successor, and there was really never going to be any other outcome than the one that happened.
The Brutus of Shakespeare and Plutarch’s greatest tragedy was that he was pushed into something he wouldn’t have done otherwise. The Brutus of history’s greatest tragedy was accepting Caesar’s forgiveness after the Caesar-Pompey conflict, and then selling out for political ambition, because Caesar's forgiveness is not benevolent.
Rather than have his enemies killed, he offered them mercy or clemency -- clementia in Latin. As Caesar wrote to his advisors, “Let this be our new method of conquering -- to fortify ourselves by mercy and generosity.” Caesar pardoned most of his enemies and forbore confiscating their property. He even promoted some of them to high public office.
This policy won him praise from no less a figure than Marcus Tullius Cicero, who described him in a letter to Aulus Caecina as “mild and merciful by nature.” But Caecina knew a thing or two about dictators, since he’d had to publish a flattering book about Caesar in order to win his pardon after having opposed him in the civil war. Caecina and other beneficiaries of Caesar’s unusual clemency took it in a far more ambivalent way. To begin with, most of them were, like Caesar, Roman nobles. Theirs was a culture of honor and status; asking a peer for a pardon was a serious humiliation. So Caesar’s “very power of granting favors weighed heavily on free people,” as Florus, a historian and panegyrist of Rome, wrote about two centuries after the dictator’s death. One prominent noble, in fact, ostentatiously refused Caesar’s clemency. Marcius Porcius Cato, also known as Cato the Younger, was a determined opponent of populist politics and Caesar’s most bitter foe. They had clashed years earlier over Caesar’s desire to show mercy to the Catiline conspirators; Cato argued vigorously for capital punishment and convinced the Senate to execute them. Now he preferred death to Caesar’s pardon. “I am unwilling to be under obligations to the tyrant for his illegal acts,” Cato said; he told his son, "I, who have been brought up in freedom, with the right of free speech, cannot in my old age change and learn slavery instead.

The link between ‘sparing’ and ‘handing over’ is common in the ancient world.763 Paul also uses παραδίδωμι again, denoting ‘hand over, give up a person’ (Bauer et al. 2000:762).764 The verb παραδίδωμι especially occurs in connection with war (Eschner 2010b:197; Gaventa 2011:272).765 However, in Romans 8:32, Paul uses παραδίδωμι to focus on a court image (Eschner 2010b:201).766 Christina Eschner (2010b:197) convincingly argues that Paul’s use of παραδίδωμι refers to the ‘Hingabeformulierungen’ as the combination of the personal object of the handing over of a person in the violence of another person, especially the handing over of a person to an enemy.767 Moreover, Eschner (2009:676) convincingly argues that Isaiah 53 is not the pre-tradition for Romans 8:32.

Along with the internal conflict of Pompey, the murderer of Brutus’ father, and Caesar, the figurehead for everything that goes against what Brutus stands for, Brutus accepting Caesar’s forgiveness isn’t an act of benevolence, regardless of Caesar’s intentions.
On wards, Caesar owns Brutus. Caesar benefits from having Brutus as his own, he inherits Brutus’ reputation, he inherits a better PR image in the eyes of the Roman people. On wards, nothing Brutus does is without the ugly stain of Caesar. His career is no longer his own, his life is no longer fully his own, his legacy is no longer entirely his. Brutus becomes a man divided.
And it’s not like it was an internal struggle, it was an entire spectacle. Hypocrisy is theatrical. Call yourself a man of honor and then you sell out? The people of Rome will remember that, and they’re going to make sure you know it.
After this certain men at the elections proposed for consuls the tribunes previously mentioned, and they not only privately approached Marcus Brutus and such other persons as were proud-spirited and attempted to persuade them, but also tried to incite them to action publicly. 12 1 Making the most of his having the same name as the great Brutus who overthrew the Tarquins, they scattered broadcast many pamphlets, declaring that he was not truly that man's descendant; for the older Brutus had put to death both his sons, the only ones he had, when they were mere lads, and left no offspring whatever. 2 Nevertheless, the majority pretended to accept such a relationship, in order that Brutus, as a kinsman of that famous man, might be induced to perform deeds as great. They kept continually calling upon him, shouting out "Brutus, Brutus!" and adding further "We need a Brutus." 3 Finally on the statue of the early Brutus they wrote "Would that thou wert living!" and upon the tribunal of the living Brutus (for he was praetor at the time and this is the name given to the seat on which the praetor sits in judgment) "Brutus, thou sleepest," and "Thou art not Brutus."

Caesar turned Brutus into the dagger that would cut, and Brutus himself isn’t free from this injury. It’s a mutual betrayal, a mutual dooming.
By this time Caesar found himself being attacked from every side, and as he glanced around to see if he could force a way through his attackers, he saw Brutus closing in upon him with his dagger drawn. At this he let go of Casca’s hand which he had seized, muffled up his head in his robe, and yielded up his body to his murderers’ blows. Then the conspirators flung themselves upon him with such a frenzy of violence, as they hacked away with their daggers, that they even wounded one another. Brutus received a stab in the hand as he tried to play his part in the slaughter, and every one of them was drenched in blood.

For Antony, Caesar is a bad sign.
Brutus and Antony are fucked over by the generation they were born in, etc etc the cannibalization of Rome on itself, the Third Servile War was the match to the gasoline already on the streets of Rome, the last generation of Romans etc etc etc. They are counterparts to each other, displaced representatives of a time already gone by the time they were alive.
Rome spends its years in a state of civil war after civil war, political upheaval, and death. Neither Brutus or Antony will ever really know stability, as instability is hallmark of the times. Both of them are at something of a disadvantage, although Brutus has what Antony does not, and what Brutus has is what let’s him create his own career. Until Caesar, Brutus is owned by no one.
This is not the case for Antony.
You can track Antony’s life by who he’s attached to. Very rarely is he ever truly a man unto himself, there is always someone nearby.
In his youth, it is said, Antony gave promise of a brilliant future, but then he became a close friend of Curio and this association seems to have fallen like a blight upon his career. Curio was a man who had become wholly enslaved to the demands of pleasure, and in order to make Antony more pliable to his will, he plunged him into a life of drinking bouts, love-affairs, and reckless spending. The consequence was that Antony quickly ran up debts of an enormous size for so young a man, the sum involved being two hundred and fifty talents. Curio provided security for the whole of this amount, but his father heard of it and forbade Antony his house. Antony then attached himself for a short while to Clodius, the most notorious of all the demagogues of his time for his lawlessness and loose-living, and took part in the campaigns of violence which at that time were throwing political affairs at Rome into chaos.

(although, in contrast to Brutus, we rarely lose sight of Antony. As a person, we can see him with a kind of clarity, if one looks a little bit past the Augustan propaganda. He is, at all times, human.)
Antony being figuratively or literally attached to a person starts early, and continues politically. While Brutus has enough privilege to brute force his way into politics despite Cicero’s lamentation of a promising life being thrown off course, Antony will instead follow a different career path that echoes in his personal life and defines his relationships.

It can be read as someone being taken advantage of, in places, survival in others, especially in Antony's early life. Other times, it appears like Antony himself is the one who manipulates things to his favor, casting aside people and realigning himself back to an advantage.

Caesar inherits Antony, and like Brutus, locks him in for a doomed ending.
The way Caesar writes about Antony smacks of someone viewing another person as something more akin to a dog, and it carries over until it’s bitter conclusion.
Caesar benefits from Antony immensely. The people love Antony, the military loves Antony. He’s charming, he’s self aware, he’s good at what he does. Above all of that, he has political ambitions of a similar passion as Brutus.
Antony drew some political benefit from his genial personality. Even Cicero, who from at least 49 did not like him,15 was prepared to regard some of his earlier misdemeanours as harmless.16 Bluff good humour, moderate intelligence, at least a passing interest in literature, and an ability to be the life and soul of a social gathering all contributed to make him a charming companion and to bind many important people to him. He had a lieutenant's ability to follow orders and a willingness to listen to advice, even (one might say especially) from intelligent women.17 These attributes made Antony able to handle some situations very well."1
There was a more important side to his personality, however, which contributed to his political survival. Antony was ruthless in his quest for pre-eminence

None of this matters, because after all Antony does for Caesar
Plutarch's comment that Curio brought Antony into Caesar's camp is surely mistaken.59 Anthony had been serving as Caesar's officer from perhaps as early as 53, after his return from Syria.60 He is described as legatus in late 52,61 and was later well known as Caesar's quaestor.62 It is more likely that the reverse of the statement is true, that Antony assisted in bringing Curio over to Caesar. If this were so, then he performed a signal service for Caesar, for gaining Curio meant attaching Fulvia, who provided direct access to the Clodian clientela in the city. Such valuable political connections served to increase Antony's standing with Caesar, and to set him apart from other officers in his army.63

Caesar still, for whatever reasons, fucks over Antony spectacularly with the will. Loyalty is repaid with dismissal, and it will bury the Republic for good.
It’s not enough for Caesar to screw him over just once, it becomes generational and ugly. Caesar lives on through Octavian: it becomes Octavian’s brand, his motif, propaganda wielded like a knife. Octavian, thanks to Caesar, will bring Antony to his bitter conclusion
And for my "bitter" conclusion, I’ll sign off by saying that there are actual scholars on Antony who are more well versed than I am who can go into depth about the Caesar-Octavian-Antony dynamic (and how it played out with Caligula) better than I can, and scholarship on Brutus consists mostly of looking at an outline of a man and trying to guess what the inside was like.
At the end of the day, Caesar was the instigator, active manipulator, and catalyst for the final act of the Republic.

HISTORY
EARLY LIFE.    born to THE judith miller and some newspaper editor, daniel was raised by the latter and notoriously abandoned by the former. well, not completely abandoned - there’s an old shoebox containing a few letters as proof - but that was the only source of communication in their otherwise absent relationship. while little danny boy didn’t fully understand why he couldn’t see his mother, he sought out an alternative solution by watching her movies. his father wasn’t aware, at first, and dan created this extravagant fantasy of the person he thought she was based on the roles she played. however, once papa abrams found out his son was watching these movies (which were probably not fit for children in the first place lmao oop), he begrudgingly revealed the bitter truth. being forced to come to terms with the fact that his own mother willingly abandoned him with his father, daniel didn’t fully understand what it meant; he couldn’t properly process why. the hurt of absent mother was expressed more out of anger, feeling as though there must have been something wrong with him. there were fewer and fewer letters sent to judith until he gave up altogether and thus, dan’s out of control behavior was born.
TEENAGE FEVER.    SUICIDE MENTION TW.  he struggled in school. his emotions betrayed him. instead of relishing a happy childhood, daniel found himself pushing everyone away, getting into fights, sneaking out late at night to run around the city streets with his friends and get into all sorts of trouble with them. he couldn’t count on his hands how many times the police picked him up and brought him to his dad’s doorstep. it only got worse once one of his best friends was found dead, written off as a suicide, though it didn’t add up in dan’s eyes and seemed so much more sinister. the young man was nearly deemed to be a lost cause, until he discovered his passion for writing. 
                                  language arts or literature was the last thing anyone would ever think to group with daniel abrams. but his english teacher noticed how well he could articulate his thoughts and feelings on paper, and submitted one of his pieces to a writing contest, which earned dan the win and a cash prize. bewildered by a talent he hadn’t even realized was in him, daniel embraced it. he started writing in a journal ( which he kept safely tucked away beneath the mattress of his bed ), documenting every feeling and thought as a way to express his emotions in a more productive manner. this talent earned him a full ride scholarship to ucla with a major in literature and plans of diving into some sort or creative writing career or perhaps becoming an english teacher, to follow in the footsteps of his high school teacher who he came to idolize.
                                  mere days into his freshman year, however, his high school sweetheart showed up in the middle of the night at his dorm with a positive pregnancy test. it was then the chaotic world as he knew it turned a new leaf, revealing a silver lining in the form of their daughter, penelope, who daniel hadn’t a clue, just yet, would save him. and so a shotgun wedding was quickly planned around the pair, both families either completely supportive or in utter disbelief. it was quick, it was cheap(ish), and it was stressful as all heck. but they were young, and in love, and were looking forward to starting a family together, despite it being a little earlier than initially planned.
“ADULT”HOOD.    fast forward five years, and they’re signing divorce papers. fortunately, it wasn’t messy. the two had simply grown apart as they matured in their respective ways, and remaining together was only causing a rift to develop between the two. the last thing they wanted, for the sake of their daughter, was built up resentment to tear the little family apart. his wife, who daniel initially thought to be the love of his life, blossomed into an absolute goddess; she was ambitious and knew exactly what she wanted. daniel, on the other hand, was still somewhat caught up in his ‘bad boy’ habits of drinking excessively and his career was still pretty up in the air. the two just didn’t compliment each others’ lifestyles anymore.
                                   daniel moved out but remained in california, settling for a bachelor’s apartment where he was able to have penelope every weekend. during this time, he finally cracked down and worked on finishing a novel he’d started years prior. within a year, he found a publisher who took interest in his grotesque works, and by the time daniel was twenty seven, his first bestseller hit the shelves, changing his life for the better with the ability to provide for his daughter without stress of landing another odd job ever again.
                                   as his fame increased, so did his desire to slink back into the shadows away from the limelight. at first, he enjoyed the wholesome book signings by day and grungy celebratory benders by night. but it grew old pretty fast and he certainly didn’t want to end up as another washed up shmuck. so, on a whim, daniel decided to move out of california completely, removing himself from the toxic lifestyle he’d grown accustomed to and shacking up on a beautiful piece of land in the rocky mountains of north carolina. the serenity and scenery certainly aided in his inspiration, as well as his unacknowledged lowkey addictions slowly being rehabilitated from his bloodstream.
OLD YELLER.    now, in his utmost prime at forty years old, he’s written numerous cult classics, a few of which have successful movie adaptations. he was lucky enough to land himself in a second marriage, though.... that one is now deteriorating as well because he literally doesn’t know how to maintain a healthy relationship. he received full custody of his daughter when she was sixteen, under the unfortunate circumstance of her mother’s untimely death. although they’d been separated for nearly twenty years, daniel was still very much affected by the loss, more so empathetically for penelope. he’s still hooked on the drink, though he’s definitely calmed down quite a bit from when he was a young buck. basically a messy, depressy old soul who uses sarcasm to deflect his true feelings.

Fearing that someone might try to travel back in time and kill him as a child, he hid his true name, birthplace, and other details from the public. "Rip Hunter" is, in fact, an alias, and his real father is the time-traveler Booster Gold, a fact that not even Booster knows.
As the inventor of time travel technology in the Post-Crisis universe, Hunter aided heroes Booster Gold and Animal Man in their own time-traveling adventures before taking on the vast Illuminati conspiracy. Hunter was eventually stranded in the prehistoric past.
Returning to the present by unknown means, Hunter began protecting earth's heroes from time-traveling villains. In one of his most notable adventures, he took members of the modern day Justice Society back in time to fight the villainous Per Degaton.

52 And Booster Gold
Hunter was one of the witnesses to the birth of the new Multiverse and was instrumental in defeating Mr. Mind and his attempt to destroy the multiple Universes. Mr. Mind had evolved into a nigh-omnipotent hyperfly feeding on universes. Hunter then revealed to Booster Gold and Booster's ancestor Daniel Carter that the Multiverse was restored as 52 individual universes as a result of Alex Luthor's actions after he escaped his "heaven" dimension. Mr. Mind sought to eat them all.
Hunter combined suspendium with Blue Beetle's scarab and Skeets' damaged, discarded shell into a trap to contain Mr. Mind's new form. Booster Gold and Supernova then hurled Skeets into the timestream, sealing the time-rift behind the little droid to trap the worm in a time-loop, saving the 52 universes. Hunter warned the others to keep the Multiverse a secret for the time being as he eagerly prepared to explore it.
Two months later, Rip invades Daniel's home, scolding Booster for attempting to win public favor. He asks Booster to help him in repairing the damage done to the time stream by Mr. Mind and Superboy-Prime. Initially, Booster refuses, but eventually changes his mind, on the condition that Rip will help him break the rules of time travel and allow him to save the one person who always believed in him, his best friend, Ted Kord, The Blue Beetle. In their first mission, an unknown party was changing the circumstances of the origins of the members of the current Justice League lineup, starting with Green Lantern, then Superman and then The Flash along with Kid Flash. Rip and Booster successfully thwarted the first two plots and then it was revealed that the mystery foe was revealed to be Booster's father Jon Carter wearing Daniel's stolen Supernova suit and former Time Master trainee Rex Hunter. Their plan was to eliminate different superheroes and use their knowledge of the future, take the heroes' places and advert every crisis and disaster and become the greatest heroes the world will ever know. They seemed to wipe out Flash and Kid Flash by placing a lightning rod on top of Barry's lab but after a big fight, Booster pulled it down and the Flashes' timelines were restored. The ending result was that Rex was captured and Jon was hit by a bolt of lightning and his suit's chronal energy was damaged, stranding him in an unknown timeline.
Some time later, Rip Hunter and Booster Gold joined Superman and Green Lantern on a quest in time to find Batman, who was sent to the past by Darkseid's Omega Sanction. On this journey they traveled to the paleolithic era and then to Vanishing Point, where they witnessed the end of times before returning to the 21st century.

Convergence
Rip encounters the Prime Earth Version of his father and teams up with him to save his dad and aunt from Deimos. While they succeed in saving them, New Earth Booster Gold's chronal sickness teleports them to Pre-Zero Hour 31st century Metropolis. New Earth Booster then disappears, while Rip, Michelle and Prime Earth Booster are confronted by the Pre-Zero Hour Legion of Superheroes.

(P1) So I finished Inuyasha the Final Act on Memorial weekend (my birthday weekend) but I still haven’t gathered my thoughts entirely! Yet I do I want to tell you about a theory I came up with while remembering The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass movie! Though it’s hard to decide which is my favorite since Swords of an Honorable Ruler was just as totally amazing, Castle Beyond the Looking Glass is the only one with Naraku.
[i’m going to be adding all the op’s parts of the ask below the cut to this post so it stays singular]
(P2) Spoilers everyone but the way Naraku tricked Inuyasha’s group and Kaguya, their mutual foe at the time, was downright epic. My jaw literally hit the floor from the shock and Naraku erased any doubt in my mind on his legit villainy from there on out! Anyway, I didn’t consider this at the time but now that I’ve had time to digest and better understand Naraku as a character, I’ve come up with a theory about why he intervened when Kaguya attempted to possess Kagome. (P3) Kaguya, a demon who absorbed and impersonated a celestial maiden, wanted to do the same to Kagome for her spiritual powers. By the end of the confrontation she was desperate, since her physical body had been destroyed. Naraku had already come out of Kohaku, but promptly got his tentacle butt kicked by Kaguya. Instead, he retreats to the shadows to let Inuyasha fight it out. (P4) The thing is, Naraku re-emerges behind Kagome as soon as Kaguya’s disembodied form isolates her from Inuyasha and the gang. I never understood why he didn’t continue hiding until AFTER she took over Kagome, THEN absorb her. Kagome’s powers would’ve been his as well if he’d just done that! (P5) My theory why? Because Narkag! Is it just me or has Naraku treated Kagome just like Inuyasha had in the beginning of the series: a Kikyō imitation, a knockoff. The difference is Naraku and Kagome remained enemies, it’s not until the Kikyō finally dies that he focuses and becomes kinda obsessed with Kagome. Or did he? I’m likely reading too much into this but I believe Naraku indirectly protected Kagome that one and only instance. (P6) This movie is set before Mount Hakurei and not long after he took back Musō/Reincarnated Onigumo, so he hardly had control over his human feelings for Kikyō. It’s likely he thought he was doing one thing when he was actually doing another. After all, he did call Kagome an impudent wench at the start of the film! The jewel could’ve manipulated him into saving her as well. Naraku and Kagome were what it ultimately desired, and in the worst way possible, Narkag was supposed to endgame. (P7) Therefore, Naraku successfully killing Kagome was out of the question. (P8) P.S. Sorry for dropping this bomb on you, but blame Rumiko Takahashi and her amazing characters! P.S.S. As shit as this theory may be, I kinda wanna make it my first fanfic. P.S.S.S. Have you ever played Doki Doki Literature Club? Now that’s another amazing villain/hero ship! Not to spoil it if you don’t know what it is or haven’t played it, but the main antagonist’s love interest/obsession...goddamn is it a visual horror novel masterpiece.

to start, i don’t really consider the movies to be canon, so it’s hard to discern movie info vs. the most valid canon material (the manga)
that being said, a bitch loves narkik, so
i remember that part of the movie lmao and it fed my narkag heart... it’s totally cool interpretation to apply the dynamics of onigumo’s human heart to those circumstances, how they might have compelled naraku to protect kagome in that moment
i think that narkik i think was /initially/ endgame; what the jewel didn’t expect was that naraku would express so much agency, to the point of killing kikyou. it’s arguable that kikyou’s soul reincarnating into kagome is the jewel’s way of trying to force that dynamic back again, bc yes, it ultimately needs a priestess vs. demon battle to fuel itself, and it wanted kikyou’s soul w/o recognizing that kagome was a separate individual. so yeah!!! during the majority of the series, narkag is supposed to be endgame, but only bc it couldn’t have kikyou

HIYA I am here to spam you with plenty of the asks ;3c 2, 5, 6, 13, 17, 21, 24, 31, 32, 39 for Jaster and Calder! :D
Hell ye \o/ prepare for an essay on these boys~
2. How much physical space do they use, active and at rest?
Jaster: Actively keeps himself contained whenever he’s able--the smaller he appears, he figures, the less chance of him attracting unwanted attention. This generally extends to when he’s resting or asleep as well, though when asleep it does tend to depend more on how tense he was before falling asleep. In the equivalent of a war zone, he’d fall asleep curled up into the tiniest ball possible to take up as little space as possible and to defend his stomach from attacks. If he falls asleep feeling rather secure and comfortable however, he generally starts out tightly balled up but gradually uncurls and stretches out a bit.
Calder: Also doesn’t take up much space and generally tries to keep himself smaller and contained. His attempts though, are caused mostly by him being so wary of his own strength and holding himself back than anything else. When sleepy or out of it though, he totally stretches out and basically sprawls out everywhere unless there’s someone nearby to latch on to and snuggle up against.
5. How do they dress? What styles, colors, accessories, and other possessions do they favor? Why?
Jaster: Is pretty much always in darker colors, anything that camouflages well with the landscape and doesn’t really show blood and grime--because honestly, up until recently he’s almost always been dirty and grimy in some way. Crawling through muck with a gash in his chest has happened way too often in his life. As a result though, his clothing isn’t particularly nice and is threadbare at best. The only accessories he really has are his variety of weapons and a necklace his father gave him that he almost never wears lest he lose it.
Calder: Has a pretty varied wardrobe bc prince, but reds and golds are the predominant colors--all in fancy and expensive fabrics even if he does try to seem less pompously royal. Along those lines he doesn’t wear too much jewelry--a couple simple rings and an earring that his mother gave him when he was young. He does like braiding his hair though--and his sister likes to weave beads and other trinkets into it.
6. What are they like in motion–in different environments, and in different activities? What causes the differences between these?
Jaster: Always moves with purpose, even if he’s not actively doing anything and has no idea where he’s going. At any moment, he’s ready to pull a knife  or dodge one way or another, which almost always results in him being wound tighter than a spring.
Calder: Tends to waffle between a facade of composure and hesitance. He’s been taught pretty much from birth to always maintain a sense of poise befitting a prince, and he often falls back on that. On the other hand though, he does tend to hover nervously and fidget when in private.
13. How do they greet the world — what is their typical attitude towards life? How does it differ in different circumstances, or towards different subjects? Why do they take these attitudes, and why do they change? How do these tend to be expressed?
Jaster: Takes a pragmatic, practical approach--not particularly pessimistic or optimistic, though between the two he definitely leans more towards pessimism considering the whole ‘paranoia and constantly expecting attacks’ thing. He’s very much the ‘plan for the worst hope for the best’ type, and tackles problems with a vengeance that’s caused in part by a belief that even if things take a turn for the worse enough hard work on his part can turn that around to his advantage.
Calder: Is more resigned than anything--he doesn’t see how he can really change anything when nothing he’s tried in the past has truly worked. Instead he tries to find comfort in the little things of life wherever he can--and as a result he’s far less bitter and angry than someone else in his position would have cause to be.
17. Are they more shaped by nature or nurture — who they are, or what has happened to them? How have these shaped who they’ve become as a person?
Jaster: Is very much shaped by his circumstances--even he has no idea what he might be like if raised in a normal environment, because even when he was too little to understand conflict and rebellion shaped his entire world. Though it’s undeniably strengthened traits that without a doubt would have shown up, it’s also brought about a few that wouldn’t be acceptable in a ‘normal’ society.
Calder: Is more shaped by nature however--he’s remained as he is in spite of his circumstances, even if they have beaten him down a fair amount. To be gentle was always within his nature, and even fearing himself becoming a vicious, unstoppable beast wasn’t enough to stifle that, beyond him isolating himself further.
21. What kind of relationships do they tend to intentionally seek out versus actually cultivate? What kind of social contact do they prefer, and why?
Jaster: Doesn’t actually know how to seek out relationships, given he was essentially raised within the same small group of people with very few changes as he grew older. He’s a touch baffled by purely social conversation, though with the right person he would try to muddle his way through it. The more practical a conversation/interaction, the more comfortable he is with it, because it’s far easier for him to talk strategy and logistics than about himself.
Calder: Actually actively avoids most relationships and social interaction. A big part of him is so scared of being found out and being seen as repulsive that he withdraws as much as he can and solely surrounds himself with those he knows he can trust and safely spend time with without the anxiety and nerves that come with a social situation. At the same time though, he definitely craves social contact, and the two people he regularly interacts with he doesn’t interact with frequently enough to ease the feeling of loneliness.
24. How do they present themselves socially? What distinguishes their “persona” from their “true self”, and what causes that difference?
Jaster: Almost always presents himself as the ‘leader’, the symbol of strength, leadership, and perseverance. It’s a double edged sword--simply the knowledge that he is with his rebels is enough to provided added motivation and determination, not to mention his reputation is practically a weapon all by itself. On the other hand though, with most of his rebels viewing him as some borderline invincible, unstoppable force, they also don’t necessarily see him as the ordinary person he really is, and attacks also go way overboard in attempts to take him down. The result of both is that he’s even more reluctant to show just about anything that could be interpreted as weakness.
Calder: In public, Calder is perpetually composed--the perfect, soft spoken and eloquent prince. Which, of course, makes people wonder just why he was passed over for heirship and leads to stranger and stranger rumors. In private he’s still soft spoken and generally calm, but shows a much greater variety of emotion, both positive and negative, and is generally more relaxed in demeanor as well.
31. Is there anything that counts as a “dealbreaker” for them, positively or negatively? What makes things go smoothly, and what spoils an activity or ruins their day? Why?
Jaster: Loyalty is probably Jaster’s be-all end-all. It’s everything to him, and someone betraying an ally or friend is one of the worst things he could think of--impressive when he’s experienced a fair bit of torture at the hands of demons. Anyone who has betrayed another in some way immediately earns his distrust and often spite, and he’s quite disinclined to change his mind once he makes such a decision on someone.
Calder: Isn’t quite so cut and dry, but anyone showing bigotry or intolerance is pretty much bound to ruin his day and probably his impression of said person as well, even if said intolerance isn’t directed at him.
32. Do they have any “props” that are a significant part of their life, identity, activities, or self-presentation somehow? What are they, how are they used, and why are they so significant? How would these props’ absence impact them, how would they compensate, and why?
Jaster: If anything, Jaster’s probably most attached to his daggers, in that to be unarmed is pretty much to be dead and he rather wants to avoid that. They’re a bit of a safety blanket for him--because he can tackle just about any foe as long as he has weapons, and it goes a long way towards keeping him from feeling helpless.
Calder: If it can be called such, Calder’s would be the tower he takes shelter in each full moon. Even if it’s reluctant and resigned, it’s incredibly important to him and contributes quite a bit to him feeling secure enough to actually roam the castle and interact with others.
39. What sort of questions or thoughts recur in their lives, either specifically or as a theme? Why are these never answered, or answered permanently to their satisfaction?
Jaster: Actually tries to avoid considering such questions because he sees them as a useless waste of time that only serves as a distraction. At the same time though it’s hard to avoid some things--he’s constantly trying to see motivations behind actions and read situations so he can react accordingly. ‘Why the hell is xyz doing this?’ is fairly common, and he tries not to let the questions delve further than that.
Calder: Is always catching himself wondering what his life would be like if he either had control over his changes or didn’t change at all like his siblings. On one hand, even if he had the option to stop transforming he probably wouldn’t take it, since he views it as a way to maintain a connection to his mother, despite all the trouble it’s caused him. On the other,  he would jump at the chance to be able to retain control over himself, as the lapses in memory and control are a huge source of anxiety and a question he’ll probably never have answered. Another recurring question would probably be his constant paranoia and anxiety that the people around him either suspect or know his secret.

Pondering the when and where of the FoE...and related things.
Aside from thinking on the time of when to place the damn thing( probably not modern times? Maybe whatever the period after the Victorian era is? Edwardian?)... Because of the inclusion of Medusa makes things a bit tricky...though Time Travel might be involved in that case due to a variety of reasons?(Though I imagine the FoE won’t employ time Travel often for reasons). Thinking it over...Hm... Sophocles of Alexandria was taken in/imprisoned by Alvis around the time the Library of Alexandria burned down(48 BC?)...but the FoE probably wasn’t established? The question is when was Alyss Found. And what are times for the other early Eldritchicians to come in. Morgan Maddox around the time of the Ulster Cycle (1st century AD?) Sinbad following the foundation of Islam for him to be Muslim... Runa, Huld, and Tomomi can basically be whenever? Hm. Okay. So..Alyss probably got adopted by Alvis (and the rest of the Eldritch Fellows basically) around the first or second century I think? Got found in a Forest or she found them (the Eldritch Fellows)...in a forest. Met Tomomi as a Child. Runa and Huld later, and Morgan when they were both Adults or young adults? Morgan saves Alyss’ life through circumstances. Morgan is granted some Imortality thing by the Eldritch Fellows. As well as an awesome new Spear. The Eldritch Fellows present Alyss with her Ring of Orichalcum, Legendary Apple Seeds, and Eldritch blood which grants Immortality among other things..but she doesn’t put it on or use the Eternal Youth but till she’s....hm.. mid to late 30s? Some such...don’t know exactly. I’m fairly certain Avalon May very well be the place Algimantas has his Orchards (being the Isle of Apples) only unlike the Market and Treasure House he has no ownership of Avalon (much to his annoyance). Faeries are likely involved. Rosemary is involved to some extent also having assisted in raising Alyss? Rosemary Goodfellow is basically the go to Nanny in this Universe I guess. Come to think of of it... I imagine the Fellowship of Eldritchicians has some connection to Morgan Le Fay (not to be confused with Morgan ‘monster hunter’ Maddox)...in fact...Oh! An early Academy of the FoE, when they’re just starting the whole Training New Eldritchicians in greater numbers than just Apprenticeships (which likely means Cosmin is around by this point?) could be the ‘convent’ that Morgan was sent to where she ended up learning all the things! (Apparently being really good at Astronomy as well as Healing and Magic stuff?) So...the Fellowship began as merely’Monitors of the Miraculous, Mystical, and Monstrous’ in the later end of the First Century BC/BCE (whichever)? Mostly with Sophocles being sent on errands for Alvis and keeping record of things... This developed into more when Alyss came in...and her friends popped up (Tomomi being the first, the the Elvish Twins, then Morgan Maddox) FoE some time in the First or Second Century AD/CE. Still stuck to observing and recording with Monster Hunting on the Side where necessary. Then Morgana is introduced to the FoE... The Fledgling organization begins being a bit more active... And the biggest thing they do is Alyss master of persuasion that she is..convincing the Empresses of Faerie (decided they’re Empresses now) not to invade/conquer the Mortal realms....setting up the foundation of what is basically a promise that Arthur will eventually Marry Empress Gloriana of Faerie (which she eventually does).... The FoE in its early days concerning itself mainly with Ghosts, Faeries, Mythical and Fantastic Monsters, Primordial Darkness, Items and objects...and plain Knowledge of things...eventually expanding to the myriad of things they do ‘now’ whenever the now is. Still debating on if they remain secret the entire time...or if they become Public at some point down the line...the Marriage treaty was likely relatively secret...with Morgana being the one to recommend her little brother as Husband Material for Gloriana. Okay..so... A Precursor to the FoE began at the tail end of the First Century BC. Alyss came in around the First or Second Century AD/CE. The FoE as the FoE is established at some point prior to the events of Arthurian Legend going down due to Morgana (who for my purposes is Magical Human with Faerie connections rather than straight up Faerie to begin with? Probably?) One of the first big things the FoE did was act as a diplomatic organization to stop Faerie and Elfphame from conquering everything else...in doing so setting up a Marriage promise between Gloriana and Arthur...which I’m realizing now is a problem with Arthur already being Married...but it’s there... The Academies set up after all that...with Beowulf Academy existing Post Beowulf happening for the name to hold the significance Morgan would want an Academy she’s running to hold (6th Century? Neat). Okay. Yeah. There’s some stuff figured out. Make of this what you will. Al, the Chronographing Cottager and Prince of Naming

Dennis’ Connection to Zarc: Arc V Character Analysis

So this may or may not be a little series I do.  While I have no hard plans, I’d enjoy going through the cast in whatever order I choose and talking about whatever aspect of the character I feel compelled to tackle at the moment in a very personal and subjective matter.  As a result if this is well-received and/or I find myself interested in continuing this I might share my thoughts on other characters in the future.
Due to @skittymon’s encouragement on this post and the fact it’s been about a year or so since episode 114, I think I’ll dive into what really stood out about Dennis’ character to me.
While I love the non-counterpart cast of Arc V to bits, I feel like Dennis is the prime example for why I believe that Arc V wasn’t really about the counterparts themselves.  Starting with the public reveal of his connection to Academia in season 2, every time he appeared I was left with this sense of  “this changes things”  His arc really builds on the themes and message of Arc V while giving a weight to different aspects of the plot.
Starting with episode 74-75 was really the first time I really thought deeply about Dennis as a character.  That’s not to say his earlier appearances are bad (I love his duel against Gongenzaka) but it introduces a very human element to Academia: reluctance.  He’s not like Yuri, the Obelisk Force, or Sora (from what we had seen so far) who deeply believe in Academia’s goals and enjoys fighting for the cause, but he’s not like Serena, someone who can turn his back on it so easily.  It’s just his job, one that he continues on doing despite the regrets it leaves him with.  Still this doesn’t excuse the harm he’s caused.  Even though he prefers to entertain as opposed to battle, there’s no erasing the fact he started a war.
Drifting into the hypothetical a bit, but this is why the only ship that I personally wish was canon is Janushipping.  Not even in a romantic context, just that they had explicitly known each other.  In the flashback we’re shown, he is on enough good terms with Ruri that waving to her as they pass by is not unusual.  Now this doesn’t signal a deep friendship or anything, but if there had been just a smidge more focus on it or at least an acknowledgment of it by Ruri, I feel it could have added a different type of pathos to the Heartland Invasion.  Seeing your home burn to the ground is very traumatic and horrifying, but it is an alien concept to most ppl and hard to empathize with.  Being able to add a human face to it through Dennis’ betrayal of Ruri adds a dimension (lol) that is much easier to relate to.  It would also give a bit more weight to Ruri as a person by showing her outside the role of Shun’s sister and Yuto’s friend/crush, but I digress.
By the time 112-114 roll around, it’s pretty easy to ignore this past revelation as Dennis acts the part of heartless soldier pretty well.  It’s only at the end of 114 do we see a continuation of this conflict.  By now he’s decided that he doesn’t want to continue and support Academia, but at the same time he feels he doesn’t doesn’t deserve redemption.  Yusho himself offers forgiveness to him with no strings attached, but the conflict between who he is and what he’s done drives him to card himself.  It’s one of the most somber moments of the series and deserving so bc we just watched a young teen commit the equivalent of suicide.  While by now we know he can return and we see this happen on-screen, there’s still the fact that Dennis thought the best fate for himself was to not exist.
Tying this in with other events, it really gives a weight again to redemption, something I think Arc V tried to do.  Winning people over to Yuya’s ideology in one duel wasn’t really done until season 3, when the show presents him as his most developed.  Before, the only person who switches so easily is Serena who unlike almost any other Academia soldier was not aware of the level of violence being done.  Sora took nearly half of season 2 before he declared himself as defecting from Academia and initially he was very much against doing more than making sure his loved ones (Yuzu and Yuya) were safe.  In season 3 the mass defecting of Academia forces can feel odd after such slow processes but in-between it all we’re smacked in the face with a character who feels redemption isn’t possible.  It’s a harsh reminder that comes very unexpectedly and also goes to differentiate the three ‘redeemed’ members of the “Fusion quartet”  as this post by @x-ali-chan-x nicely summarizes

Next this also reminds the viewer that these are child soldiers.  In a fantastical series such as Yugioh the horror of this is nowhere near the level of reality, but it’s still hurts.  As many victims he’s hurt, Dennis is a victim himself, and it’s very hard to ignore that act when faced with these actions.  On another note it almost mirrors Zarc’s fall before he even learn his existence.  To declare either as blameless is to outright ignore the show, but outside circumstances are both a key factor.  If left to their own devices, both would probably prefer to simply entertain ppl. Even if the damage of their actions outweighs any sympathy in your eyes, that doesn’t take away the tragic elements to their struggle.
Interestingly enough, exactly 30 episodes later is when we get a resolution to Dennis’ arc.  To understand the impact of this, context is required.  The fanon around Dennis’ character was largely composed of angst and hurt with the only sign of recovery being shown as happen years in post-canon  I say this as someone who was writing fanfic like that bc the fact 144 is so optimistic hit everyone out of right field.   Not only was it positive, but it felt right, better than any conclusion others had proposed.  I remember discussing with a friend how the idea of him becoming a teacher and sort of finding his redemption in the next generation was something that had never occurred to her yet it was perfect.
Personally 144 is one of the reason I will never discount the “make Reira smile” arc as pointless.  To me the duel between Yuya and Dennis shows the best of entertainment dueling in several subtle ways.  At the beginning Dennis is falling into some old habits, painting himself as a villain for Yuya to defeat and make everything better with.  Though his self-carding is never outright mentioned its memory is hard to ignore as he still views himself as unworthy of being “good.”  Then Yuya flips the script and reaches out to him.  The duel becomes less about vanquishing a foe and more about understanding someone else to build a bigger and brighter future than before.  In a way this prepares the audience again for how Yuya will handle Zarc.  The way Yuya overcomes Zarc’s shadow is by trying to understand him and instead of damning him showing how better alternatives exist.
So again when I see the statement that the counterparts were the star of the show, I have to disagree.  Even if some of what I pointed out was more coincidence as opposed to intentional actions on the creator’s part, I feel you can’t argue that Dennis’ role in the story wasn’t meant to have importance to the overall narrative.  And for the most part I think many agree.  Despite supporting character I have only seen one person express dislike for him.  Usually the coldest reaction I see is indifference or neutrality, and that is overshadowed by the love I see showered on him.  His impact sticks in a way I think the character himself would be proud to see.

Well. I am very much here for Obi-Wan as a Sith God. Man, poor Anakin. Being favored of a Sith God (who also believes the actual Sith in the galaxy are worshiping him inappropriately) has to be very stressful.
Can you imagine, though? I know Anakin cuts off limbs at least once in the movies, when he cuts off Dooku’s hands. In the movies it’s probably something he learned from Obi-Wan, but imagine if it was a Jedi tactic instead? Obi-Wan is probably very pleased with all these force users using their superior skill to remove limbs, especially since none of them are doing it for prestige or favor at all. It’s purely to accomplish their mission without taking life, so none of them are struggling the misunderstandings that most of the Sith trying to worship him do. (ie. That it’s about the limbs and not the skill demonstrated in removing them.) I like to image that he sometimes just latches onto a Jedi and starts showing up at their battles, willfully misinterpreting their actions as worship. All the Jedi are probably warned about this very rare circumstance which might happen to them, and how to deal with it. One day he’s there when Grevious is on the field and he lights up immediately. Anakin has to explain to his troops (but not his padawan) why he suddenly has a Sith God favoring him and his forces. It kind of freaks everyone out, but Obi-Wan is happy if there are sufficiently interesting foes to fight (not most droids, so he isn’t there most of the time), he doesn’t turn on Anakin’s people, and the Sith sort of expect this from a Sith God, in a frustrated sort of fashion. Of course he wouldn’t be reasonable. Of course they wouldn’t be good enough for him. Of course the only attention he would pay to them is opposition, so that they grow stronger through adversity. Of course.
Anakin’s forces sometimes leak shadow and can move with inhuman speed. Their practice pays off with exponentially better results than other troopers with a similar level of dedication. They die just as often as before, but occasionally they can move farther for much longer than they really should be able to. The Jedi just make sure to check them for taint and clean it up if they find any.

 actually lets go full eldritch here and say that anakin is literally the only living thing to have seen the sithgod’s Keno’s mundane/material face, and even then only in frightening dreams. keno whispers quietly (so much so) in waking hours that anakin for a long time misunderstands it as the Force

Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star - Choose Your Servant Blog
With contributions from Alyssa, Billy, Brittany, Danielle, Jason, John, Liz, Nate, Nick, Ryan, and Tom
Part of what makes Fate such a compelling setting is that its specific premise doesn't just stand on its own, but fuels the viewer/player's imagination, inviting them to envision new additions to the world and the cast of characters. If you're new to the series, it's about a ritual conflict between a variety of heroes and villains from history, mythology, and fiction, all coming together to battle it out as Servants for the Masters who summoned them. The winning Master (theoretically) receives the world-altering power of the Holy Grail.
The Servants' battles are based on rules, and each Servant has strengths and weaknesses. Part of the reason the Servants typically refer to themselves by their class (such as Saber or Archer), rather than by their names, is because their true identities can give their opponents clues as to what those strengths and weaknesses are. For that reason, Servants often disguise themselves, appearing as other ethnicities, genders, or even species than their original namesake. Each Servant can only be summoned through the use of a particular artifact, unique to that Servant's history and personality.
All that got us thinking about what kind of Servants we'd pick for ourselves. We asked around the office, "If you could pick anyone, real, mythological, or fictional, from anywhere in time, to fight for you, who would it be, what would they look like, and what kind of powers would they have?" Here are everyone's answers:
 Ryan:
Servant: Don Quixote

Class: Lancer
Origin: Literary knight/madman, 1605
Artifact: The Golden Helmet of Mambrino (aka any brass shaving basin)
Appearance: Don Quixote appears as his author did in his youth, clean-shaven and a bit gangly, with the spark of adventure and a young man's drive to save the world.
Strengths: Can create Reality Marbles at will, and often does so without even realizing it. These Reality Marbles, which depict Quixote's imagined fantasy world, have the effect of hypnotizing anyone in them with a Mana rating of C or below, including Quixote himself, into temporarily believing that the fantasy is real. He is also proficient with his sword and lance, and while not a Rider, he can execute a (slow, awkward) charge from horseback.
Weaknesses: Quixote cannot always control when or how his Reality Marbles appear, and miniature Reality Marbles are constantly appearing and disappearing inside his head. As a result, he frequently mistakes inanimate objects for evil creatures, and has trouble distinguishing friend from foe.
Noble Phantasm: "Wild Winds of Fortune" — Quixote summons a row of giant windmills, which spin fast enough to create a tornado.
Alignment: Chaotic Good

Weaknesses: (Don't say stingrays, don't say stingrays...)
Noble Phantasm: "Irwinado" — Picture Gilgamesh's NP, but with crocodiles and snakes.

Origin: Fictional clerk from a Herman Melville story, 1853
Artifact: An empty quill stuck in a shallow square foot of wet cement
Appearance: A woman in her 30s or 40s with hair graying before her time, and a perpetual look of absolute doneness upon her face.
Weapon: Reluctance
Strengths: Can efficiently calculate and execute strategy in short bursts
Weaknesses: Inevitably starts backing away from combat situations after a short while, just standing there and looking sad…sad enough that the enemies feel sympathy for her plight, as she stands and stares wistfully at the moon, proclaiming “I would prefer not to fight” whenever anyone comes at her with weapons drawn.
This is actually a strength, however, as no one would have the heart to hurt her, but they’d think about it for a second…and in that moment, they’d be distracted and vulnerable, which is when Tom would come in and smash them over the head with a vase or something.
Her other weakness is that her battles would all have to be fought in the same exact area, since Bartleby would eventually refuse to move from her spot for any reason whatsoever, even if compelled via Command Seal.
Noble Phantasm: "Ah, Bartleby! Ah, moe-ness!" — Bartleby stands rooted there, eternally staring upward, the glow of the moon burning itself into her corneas until her corneas simply burn away altogether. And yet, she still stares, endlessly, deeply, even through the pallid, useless orbs now adorning her face.
Alignment: True Neutral

Servant: Cao Cao

Class: Caster (Some believed him to be a sorcerer in life; turns out they were right)
Origin: Imperial Chancellor of the Han Dynasty, born in 155 AD
Artifact: The noose he used to hang Lu Bu
Appearance: He disguises himself as a bent old man with a cane and a long, wispy white beard
Weapon: Chinese-style sword
Strengths: Particularly adept in magic that is useful for statecraft, such as sowing discord among people or spying on others. One of his mysterious abilities derives from the real Chinese expression, "speak of Cao Cao, and Cao Cao arrives" (an equivalent to "speak of the Devil"). Cao Cao has the ability to be anywhere that his name is spoken, even in more than one place at once. (In Fate, this also applies to anyone who speaks the word "Caster.")
Weaknesses: His weakness is his hubris. Zhuge Liang, who humiliated him at the Battle of the Red Cliffs, still inflames his temper easily. Lu Bu, whom he executed in life, wants to return the favor.
Noble Phantasm: Calls forth a cavalry charge, with his men driven forward both by rage against the enemy and fear of him.
Alignment: Lawful Evil

Servant: Nebuchadnezzar II

Class: Caster
Origin: King of Babylon (and, by extension, the known world), born in 634 BC. The construction of the famous Ishtar Gate and the Hanging Gardens, noted as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, are commonly attributed to him, and he’s also known for his appearance in the Bible, particularly in the book of Daniel.
Artifact: One of the lapis-glazed bricks of the Ishtar Gate, which exists today restored in a museum in Berlin
Appearance: I can see him dressed in a fine robe dyed the color of lapis (prized for its rich, blue hue by the royalty of the ancient world), embroidered with extravagant designs on the hems in golden thread. He’d have the look of a mystic – a sort of “sorcerer-king,” in my imagination. Still not sure about whether my ideal Neb appearance would keep the famous beard you see show up in a lot of statues from that time period, but I like the idea of a wavy, windswept head of black hair. Civil enough for the chambers of government, but with a touch of unkempt-ness befitting a battlefield.
Strengths: An adept Caster, Nebuchadnezzar can exert great influence on the astral plane, spinning his dreams into prophecies and divinations. He’s also capable of using his sovereignty to prod at weaknesses and loopholes in the power of Command Seals.
Weaknesses: Nebuchadnezzar, while wise and shrewd, is also a superstitious man who seeks the approval of the gods. He may hesitate to press an advantage if he doesn’t have a solid grasp of the risks involved.
Noble Phantasm: "Hanging Gardens of Babylon" — Either a floating palace with an orbital laser cannon, or an untouchable sanctuary in which Nebuchadnezzar and his Master rest and bide their time.
Notes: The kingdom of Uruk that once belonged to series-staple Gilgamesh would after many centuries go on to become the Babylon ruled over by Nebuchadnezzar, and during his reign, he presided over both great destruction and great creation. His armies subdued foreign kingdoms, bringing them into the Babylonian empire, but he also oversaw a massive slew of public works projects – everything from walls to bridges to temples. His was a gilded age for the kingdom. Within Fate lore, Nebuchadnezzar is already acknowledged to exist as a Heroic Spirit, though we’ve never seen him summoned before and so don’t know much about what Type-Moon’s take on him would be, or what class he’s most likely to be summoned into. I can see him being a strategic type of caster – the type to factor in the placement of ley lines, fortify structures with wards, and favor spells that turned the environmental conditions of a fight to his favor. As a lover of great architecture, I think it fits him. But that said, his status as a conqueror means he wouldn’t shrink from direct battle, especially when he has aligned circumstances in his favor via his various enchantments.
Alignment: Lawful Neutral

Servant: Guan Yu

Origin: A mighty warrior from ancient China who could cleave a large army with ease. He was also known for having a well-kept beard. He was nicknamed “Beautiful Beard”. Born in the latter half of the second century AD.
Artifact: Green Dragon Crescent Blade
Appearance: Guan Yu’s appearance would be of a large, red-skinned centaur. His mane and beard are made of fire.
Strengths: Superior strength, endurance, and mobility
Weaknesses: Easily identified by his hooves and red hide
Noble Phantasm: "Red Hare" — Guan Yu charges forward, swinging his spear and dragging a wall of fire with him.
Alignment: Lawful Good
 Nathan:
Servant: Björn Ironside

Origin: Legendary 9th century Viking commander
Artifact: The runic stone from his barrow
Appearance: Disguises himself as a sickly, dying man
Strengths: Ferocity, advantage of surprise
Weaknesses: Vulnerable to fire, particularly Greek fire
Noble Phantasm: "Jarn" — Björn discards his sickly disguise and turns his body to iron. Since Fate enjoys its share of pseudoscience, this Noble Phantasm would not only make him relatively invulnerable to any attack that isn't ridiculously powerful, it would also increase his total weight, and therefore mass, substantially. If we assume that he'd still be able to move as quickly as he did before its use, then his overall combat abilities would increase as his hits now carry a greater force behind them. 
Notes: The picture shown comes from his most famous moment, in which, while besieging a city, he pretended to be dying, convinced the clergy to take his coffin into the city to perform his last rites, and then jumped out of the coffin, rampaged his way to the city gates, and opened them for his army.
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral

Servant: Locusta

Class: The most obvious classes that she would fall into would be Caster and Assassin, but one of the nifty things about Fate is that it isn’t always about the obvious, so perhaps Locusta would actually be in the Archer class.
Origin: Locusta was a prolific serial murderer in Ancient Rome, with poison being her weapon of choice. She was so well known that Agrippina the Younger, sister of Caligula and mother of Nero, supposedly hired her to poison her husband, Emperor Claudius, in AD 54. Locusta was convicted of poisoning another victim, but Emperor Nero swept in and rescued her from being executed…in exchange for poisoning someone else for him. In short, Locusta was kept in Nero’s back pocket for all of his poisoning needs, given some very nice land, and even began teaching others the illustrious ways of poison making. Of course, being part of Nero’s entourage did pose its dangers, and after his suicide, Locusta was sentenced to death and (most likely) publicly executed.
Artifact: One of her old glass vials, filled with one of her signature poisons.
Appearance: Well, she was quite famous, so I don’t think it would be anything subtle, that’s for sure. Since Emperor Claudius’ murder was committed via a poisoned dish of mushrooms, maybe a mushroom design would be incorporated in some way.
Strengths: Unpredictable, backstabby, all her attacks inflict poison status
Weaknesses: Vulnerable when caught alone in the open
Noble Phantasm: "Venenum in Nube" — A toxic cloud spreads out from Locusta's hands and covers the area.
Notes: There are so many interesting characters in history and mythology that I think would be great additions to the already fantastic lineup of Fate Servants, so it was a really difficult decision to make (I’m sure almost all of my coworkers would say something similar!). I went through a lot of different options, but I kept drifting back to Locusta.
I think it would be interesting to see Locusta in Fate because of her ties to Nero and Caligula, two Servants already present in game. Would Locusta be angry at Nero, since her connection with him put a target on her back after he was dead? I mean, not that the poisoning people thing would have helped her out anyway… On the other hand, she would have been killed years prior, if he hadn’t interfered. So how would THAT play out in the Fate world? My mind spins.
Alignment: Neutral Evil

Servant: Harada Sanosuke

Noble Phantasm: "Makoto no Tsuranuki" — Sanosuke uses his spear to pierce through dimensions and strike from all angles at once.

Artifact: A punch card from the Pilot ACE computer

Strengths: Mother of artificial intelligence, Turing controls legions of clockwork minions with algorithms ahead of her time. She can also crack open the secrets of the mind, and even occasionally take control.
Weaknesses: Delights in exposing others' secrets, but despairs if her own are ever revealed
Noble Phantasm: "Enigma" — Her Noble Phantasm will trap the mind in an artificial reality almost impossible to distinguish from our own world, leaving those affected catatonic and vulnerable to suggestion and manipulation.
Alignment: True Neutral (In the end, she really just wants more toys to play with)

 Servant: The Kool-Aid Man

Noble Phantasm: "Oh Yeah!" — Summons an enormous wall, then breaks through it, scattering bricks for miles
Alignment: Chaotic Good (He causes property damage, but gives free drinks to kids)

This envelope cannot be opened, torn, cut, burned, made transparent, scryed, or otherwise accessed until the Holy Grail War is over, at which point Seacrest, if still alive, takes it back, opens it, and reads off the name. In the meantime, clever Masters may find ways to use the indestructible envelope as a tool or a weapon.

Summoning Artifact: A threadbare rug (it really held the room together)
Appearance: Jeff Bridges in plaid shorts, flip-flops, a t-shirt, and a beat-up old sweatshirt. Basically, a Southern Californian hippie. He doesn't bother hiding who he is.
Weapon: Bowling ball. Like...a very shiny bowling ball, man.
Strengths: Ability to remain unfazed by all manner of chaotic happenings; extreme passivity means he can stay materialized by his Mage for a very small mana upkeep
Weaknesses: White Russians, work
Noble Phantasm: "The Dude Abides" — Shifts reality to create a zone in which aggression shall not stand, reducing the hostility of even an attacking Servant to zero. It might just be drugs, but we'll let you be the judge of that.
Alignment: True Neutral

Give us a brief synopsis of your story – A Handful of Salt
At the dawn of the fourth century, BC, Cyrus the Younger hired an army of ten thousand Greek mercenaries to challenge his brother for the throne of the Persian Empire. His Greeks were victorious, but he was slain and the Greeks were stranded deep inside the Persian Empire without supplies. Their only way home was to fight their way north through the mountains of eastern Turkey to the Black Sea, as described through the eyes of one of their leaders, Xenophon.
It is considered one of the greatest feats of military history and has often been recounted and reimagined, but never through the eyes of their adversaries, the Persians, or the ancestral tribes of eastern Turkey. One event, in particular, is haunting and tragic. Today we struggle to understand the mind-set of ancient cultures, often making the mistake of seeing their world through the filter of our own values. This story is an attempt to understand a heroic perspective alien to our own.
Why did you choose that time period/group of people to write about?
I love ancient history and the Anabasis is fascinating, but there is not much left to say about it from the Greek side of the story. However, no one has done a piece from the point of view of the Anatolian tribes that the Greeks encountered as they struggled to get home. Why did these tribes continually attack the Greeks? Why did one village commit mass suicide when the Greeks came too close?
What research did you do for the story?
I always do a lot of research for my stories. The Anabasis, of course, is the primary text. I also had to determine the most likely route, which is still in dispute. Then I had determine the most likely location for the events of my story, determine the tribe that lived there, what they called themselves, how they related to their neighbours, to the Persians and so on. I love this stuff.
How would you define a Skirmisher?
A skirmisher is typically a lightly armed soldier who relies on speed and manoeuvrability to be effective in battle, rather than heavy armour and weapons. While the goal of heavy infantry is to come to close battle with the enemy and slog it out, skirmishers try to outmanoeuvre the enemy, hit and run, break up enemy formations, wear down the heavy soldiers and win in the long game.
What are the challenges in writing historical fiction/fantasy?
For me, it is getting each detail right. I can’t bear to bend history to my story. If I include it, it must be factual, or at least plausible to history.
What is your usual genre?
Historical fiction, so far, though I intend to do more in fantasy and scifi, eventually.
How do you define a hero?
To me, a hero is someone who freely and knowingly risks his or her own welfare for the benefit of another, without thought to any reward.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Originally an astronaut. I was certain I would be NASA’s first kid in space. Apparently, they didn’t have my correct address. I wanted to write stories from my teens, but not much came of it. Now I am finally indulging that dream.

I am a seasoned warrior, husband and farmer. My wife and I have shared a difficult life, full of sorrows as well as blessings. Our circumstances in life have fallen low, but we have a fine heifer, two asses, some sheep and goats. But no children, anymore.
3) How do you come to be on this adventure?
Invaders from a distant land threaten our homes, so I must do my duty to protect them, and try to impart my experience on our young warriors.
4) Tell us a bit about the society in which you live
We are an ancient people, attuned to the rugged mountains of our ancestors. We sing, dance, tend our farms and pastures and raise our children to respect the ancient ways. We have no towns larger than a few dwellings, but impenetrable strongholds on the mountainsides. We wage no wars on those who leave us be, but we fight unto death against any who threaten us. The Taochi Never Submit is our creed, and never have we been conquered.
5) Are you brave?
What is bravery? Is it the thoughtless lack of fear? I have known dreadful fear, but have never shrunk from my duty.
6) How do others see you?
I do not care.
7) Do you believe in a god?
Of course. They have little to do with us mortals, but our ancestors are with us, always. They watch over us, judge us, and if we are worthy, will welcome us to their company when this life ends.
8) Do you love anyone? Do you hate anyone?
I love my wife, Bedisa. She is wise, kind, and stronger in spirit than anyone I have ever known. I love my loyal friend, Temur. I love my daughter, who I may not name since she has become a handmaiden to the Wife of the Dead. Or perhaps the Wife, herself. I love my three sons, who have already joined our ancestors. I hate no one.

Sean Poage, has had an exciting and varied life, as a laborer, soldier, police officer, investigator, computer geek and author. Travelling the world to see history up close is his passion.
These days he works in the tech world, writes when he can, and spends the rest of the time with his family, which usually means chores and home improvement projects, with occasional time for a motorcycle ride, scuba dive, or a hike in the beautiful Maine outdoors.
