An Arbitrary Collection of Book Recommendations

(put together for a friend out of SFF I've read over the last couple of years)

Cli-Fi

Tusks of Extinction and/or The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler. They’re pretty different books in a lot of ways – one is a novel about discovering a certain species of squid in the Pacific might have developed symbolic language and writing, the other a novella about a de-extinction initiative to restore mammoths to the Siberian taiga – but they share a pretty huge overlap in setting, tone and themes. Specifically, a deep and passionate preoccupation with animal conservation (and a rather despairing perspective on it), as well as a fascination with transhumanism and how technology can affect the nature of consciousness. Mountain is his first work, and far more substantial, but I’d call it a bit of a noble failure in achieving what it tries for. Tusks is much more limited and contained, but manages what it’s going for.

A Half-Built Garden by Ruthanna Emrys. In a post-post-apocalyptic world that’s just about figured out how to rebuild itself from the climate disasters of the 21st century (but that’s still very much a work in progress), aliens descend from the sky and make First Contact. They’re a symbiotic civilization, and they’re overjoyed at the chance to welcome a third species into their little interstellar community – and consider it a mission of mercy besides, since every other species they’ve ever encountered destroyed themselves and their planet before escaping it. Awkwardly, our heroine and her whole society are actually pretty invested in Earth and the restoration thereof – and worried that a) the alien’s rescue effort might not care about their opinions and b) that other interest groups on earth might be more willing to give the hyper-advanced space-dwelling aliens the answers they want to hear. Basically 100% sociological worldbuilding and political intrigue, so take that as you will.

Throwback Sci Fi

Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky is possibly the only thing I’ve read published in decades to take the old cliche of ‘this generic-seeming fantasy world is actually the wreckage of a ruined space age civilization, and ‘magic’ and ‘monsters’ are the remnants of the technology’ and play it entirely straight. Specifically, it’s a two-POV novella, where half the story is told from the perspective of a runaway princess beseeching the ancient wizard who helped found her dynasty for help against a magical threat, and half is from the perspective form the last surviving member of a xeno-anthropology mission woken out of stasis by the consequences of the last time he broke the Prime Directive knocking on his ship tower door and asking for help. Generally just incredible fun.

Downbelow Station by C. J. Cherryh is, I think, the only thing on this list written before the turn of the millennium. It’s proper space opera, about a habitat orbiting an immensely valuable living world that’s the lynchpin of logistics for the functionally rogue Earth Fleet’s attempt to hold off or defeat rebelling and somewhat alien colonies further out. The plot is honestly hard to summarize, except that it captures the feel of being history better than very nearly any other spec fic I’ve ever read – a massive cast, none of them with a clear idea of what’s going on, clashing and contradictory agendas, random chance and communications delays playing key roles, lots of messy ending, not a single world-shaking heroes or satanic masterminds deforming the shape of things with their narrative gravity to be seen. Somewhat dated, but it all very impressively well done.

Pulpy Gay Urban Fantasy Period Piece Detective Stories Where Angels Play a Prominent Role

A Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark stars Fatma el-Sha’arawi, the youngest woman working for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities in Cairo, a couple of decades after magic returned to the world and entirely derailed the course of Victorian imperialism. There’s djinn and angels and crocodile gods, and also an impossible murder that needs solving! The mystery isn’t exactly intellectually taxing, but this is a very fun tropey whodunnit whose finale involves a giant robot.

Even Though I Knew The End by C. L. Polk is significantly more restrained and grounded in its urban fantasy. It’s early 20th century Chicago, and a PI is doing one last job to top off the nest egg she’s leaving her girlfriend before the debt on her deal with the devil comes due. By what may or may not be coincidence, she stumbles across a particularly gruesome crime scene – and is offered a deal to earn back her soul by solving the mystery behind it. Very noir detective, with a setting that just oozes care and research and a satisfyingly tight plot.

High Concept Stuff That Loves Playing around With Format and the Idea of Narratives

Radiance by Catherynne M. Valente is a story about a famous documentarian vanishing on shoot amid mysterious and suspicious circumstances, as told by the recovered scraps of the footage she was filming, and different drafts of her (famous director) father’s attempt to dramatize the events as a memorial to her. It’s set in a solar system where every planet is habitable and most were colonized in the 19th century, and culturally humanity coasts on in an eternal Belle Epoque and (more importantly) Golden Age of Hollywood. Something like half the book is written as scripts and transcripts. This description should by now either have sold you or put you off entirely.

The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez is the only classic-style epic fantasy on this list, I believe? The emperor and his three demigod sons hold subjugated in terror, but things are changing. The emperor, terrified of death, has ordered a great fleet assembled to carry him across the sea in pursuit of immortality. The day before he sets out on his grand pilgrimage to the coast, a guilt-ridden guard helps the goddess of the moon escape her binding beneath the palace. From there, things spiral rapidly out of anyone’s control. The story’s told through two or three (depending( different layers of narrative framing devices, and has immense amounts of fun playing with perspective and format and ideas about storytelling and legacy.

I Couldn’t Think of Any Categories That Included More Than One of These

All The Names They Used For God by Anjali Sachdeva is a collection of short stories, and probably the most literary thing on this list? The stories range wildly across setting and genre, but are each more or less about the intrusion of the numinous or transcendent or divine into a world that cracks and breaks trying to contain it. It is very easily the most artistically coherent short story collection I’ve ever read, which I found pretty fascinating to read – but honestly I’m mostly just including this on the strength of Killer of Kings, a story about an angel sent down to be John Milton’s muse as he writes Paradise Lost which is probably one of the best things I read last year period.

Last Exit by Max Gladstone – the Three Parts Dead and How You Lose the Time War guy – could be described as a deconstruction of ‘a bunch of teenagers/college kids discover magic and quest to save the world!’ stories, but honestly I’d say that obscures more than it reveals. Still, the story is set with that having happened a decade in the past, and the kids in question have thoroughly fucked up. Zelda, the protagonist, is kept from suicide by survivor’s guilt as much as anything, and now travels across America working poverty jobs and sleeping in her car as she hunts the monsters leaking in through the edges of a country rotting at the seams. Then there’s a monster growing in the cracks of the liberty bell, an in putting it down she gets a vision of someone she thought was dead is just trapped – or maybe changed. So it’s time to get the gang together again and save the world! This one’s hard to rec without spoiling a lot, but the prose and characterization are all just sublime. Oddly in conversation with the whole Delta Green cosmic horror monster hunting subgenre for a story with nothing to do with Lovecraft.

Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh is a story about aliens destroying the earth, and growing up in the pseudo-fascist asteroid survivalist compound of the last bits of the human military that never surrendered. It stars a heroine whose genuinely indoctrinated for the first chunk of the book and just deeply endearing terrible and awful to interact with, and also has a plot that’s effectively impossible to describe without spoiling the big twist at the end of the first act. Possibly the only book I read last year which I actively wish was longer – which is both compliment and genuine complaint, for the record, the ending’s a bit messy. Still, genuinely meaty Big Ideas space opera with very well-done characterization and a plot that does hold together.

i need to share my very horrible idea to combine the reinhard/julius/otto/subaru boy drama into one julius-centric fic

ok so a little while ago ive made all kinds of ottojuli and reinjuli posts and while i havent finished all my major julisuba posts Yet i am quite fond of julisuba also and i think itd be incredibly funny if you just dumped all of these ships into one story. just go ALL IN on that boy drama!!!! go big or go home amirite!!!! the worlds WORST love trapezoid youve ever seen!!!!

this post is just me rambling fic ideas bc i sadly dont have time for Every Fic Idea and also i just. i just think itd be funny putting multiple ships with the same person in them into one fic. on a serious level its like mimicking real life relationships where sometimes people come and go and you have different dynamics with each person!! on another level i just think this is also very funny so!! here we go. under the cut:

anyway so my idea for this is that you know, julius of course meets reinhard when hes ten and reinhard is eight and then it alters julius's brain chemistry. at first he's in complete awe of reinhard. and then over time the shame starts setting in. that julius isnt as strong as reinhard. and the jealousy sets in a bit too, so julius's got this chip in his shoulder trying to carry his family's legacy and trying to carry the weight of knighthood to be as perfect as possible. to be as close to reinhard as he can. they meet again in their teens and julius shows reinhard the ropes of like basic knight stuff bc reinhard just joined the knights. and of course reinjuli become friends but julius has spent his whole life quietly watching reinhard from afar and now julius still has that distance with reinhard even as theyre supposedly friends now. reinhard is a God, you know? his powers and his leash from the kingdom and his family keep him distant and the two of them are ignoring that. classic homoerotic "do i want him or want to be him" friendship where both of you are too scared to get any closer for various reasons with a Twist (reinhard's very real monster complex that keeps getting validated bc Everyone Around Him thinks hes a monster).

anyway but then julius remembers that you know, shit between reinhard and him wont work out for many reasons, like reinhards family deciding to torment julius at various points in his life (heinkel, whos julius's boss, and reid, who went from julius's childhood idol to. you know.), and also reinhard needs to have kids because hes the sword saint, and also homophobia exists in rezero. and also even if those werent all obstacles julius still has his Complexes connected to reinhard and they got that distance between them so. no go. (repression gets in the way of relationships :((( )

also quick side note is that ex 4 happens and julius reinhard ferris go to vollachia and julius interrupts a meeting with vincent vollachia himself to go "I UNDERSTOOD THAT LITERARY REFERENCE YOU JUST MADE. THATS A REALLY GOOD REFERENCE I LIKED IT A LOT" bc hes a massive nerd and ig this is slightly-more-of-a-disaster-gay julius au so julius is like ............................. vincent was kinda cool for that.

AND THEN SUBARU CRASHES INTO JULIUS'S LIFE and julius is like seeing this guy who's also got a chip in his shoulder and then he insults the knights and says the knights are all depending on their dads (nepotism) and julius is like .......the chip in my shoulder was bad enough and also youre kinda like me fr. and you are clearly a fucking misguided kid so now i have to save your ass. i cant NOT save your ass. and reinhards like "julius and subaru nooo you dont have to do this :((((" and julius cant admit atm that hes also doing this to save subarus life so julius is just like "he disrespected the knights >:(((("

but yes we all know what happened there. julius saves subarus life. julius has to slice subarus throat in that one failed loop. they become friends across several timelines. they also homoerotically share souls, you know, typical bromance things, rivals to lovers except subarus the one going YOURE MY RIVAL and julius is like he is SUCH an upstart. hes really grown on me like a fungus but thats the appeal. and julius i think sees subaru as like a kindred spirit (or at least thats how i interpret julisuba) except subaru is like way more freer than julius is. same desire to prove yourself but subarus not restraining himself constantly like julius. its sometimes to the point of recklessness and general stupidity and what have you, but his boldness and bravery and determination and heart really is admirable.........................

yeah so anyway julius falls for ANOTHER guy again, you know how it is sometimes. the heart wants what it wants and julius is cursed to always have the worst meetings with his closest friends. and of course julius gets heartbroken bc wtf i have to kill my new friend :((( noo!!!! but in the finished loop its like. oh subaru...... hes really improved himself. hes grown so much already. hes kind of. inspirational really. idk how he does it. except subarus you know got that Mystery to him the same way reinhard does (theyre traumatized and Cant Take About It Normally so they just randomly lore drop what they can) and also subarus SUPER into emilia. and julius is like .................... well. subarus taken. haha. and reinhards. taken. fuck me. fuck. and like somethings going on with subaru and rem and emilia right. fuck. and subarus got his whole toxic masculinity / gender crisis..... and he doesnt know hes Bisexual yet...... man. what a loss for julius amirite haha.

and also subarus busy after arc 3........... and julius has no idea whats happening there but that seems Real serious :(( and julius's got other things to attend to so he hopes subaru reaches out to him eventually..... or that they cross paths again since subarus in the emilia camp and julius is in ana camp (and of course reinhard is in felt camp and like that was a whole debacle bc wtf. reinhard, u do know thatd be a big deal to our mutual friend felix?). so. julius pines from afar ONCE AGAIN HAHA.

(also of course subarus still attracted to reinhard here. its um. well julisuba can bond now over pining over reinhard but thats for later also!!)

anyway of course during arc 3 julius briefly runs into some gray haired merchant twink thats being dragged around by subaru bc ana camp rescued this guy from a cave somewhere??? and this new guy and subaru made a deal or whatever so he was just helping out in the background of the fight against sloth??

and whaddya know................ julius goes to drink at a bar bc you know he probably tastes wine for fun in his free time (hes definitely Fond of wine anyway iirc) and now hes Sad over the Ones That Got Away so. bar it is. and gray haired merchant twink is there!! no way. they start talking a bit casually while drinking you know and julius's taste is Unfortunately either the graceful ones (anastasia, because julius has great taste in women) or the cringe fail ones (all the twinks - except for felix - that julius keeps having the wildest first meetings with, because julius has slightly shit taste in men) so julius is like huh this otto guys kinda funny lol. endearing in a weird way!! and -

oops they both end up being a little. they make a little bit of a move on each other. bc they were drinking and got a Bit tipsy. ottos Also not over the one that got away (subaru) (again) and hey. the finest knight truly is. Fine. objectively fine. totally. so you know. things get a little out of hand, maybe they do a bit of cringe fail flirting hidden underneath five million layers of repression and the Horrors of Being Known but ultimately they both embarrass themselves somehow (read: how far they went with each other while under the influence is up to you) and agree to Never Speak of This Again bc oopsies they were both technically each other's first time being Straightforwardly Not Straight with another man. oops. anyway julius has to go back to his camp and otto fucking bolts but he bolts right into subaru and gets his ass dragged into sanctuary drama.

julius is totally not a little bit envious about that.................... about otto getting to accompany subaru to sanctuary... but dont worry julius!! youll get to make up for it later!! bc eventually arc 5 stuff happens. and julius is Glad to see reinhard and subaru again. even with all the Baggage. and subaru is of course Weird about julius but eventually subaru reassures julius after they both confide in each other about the astrea drama (theyre honorary astreas via being dragged into the astrea family mess). and subarus reassuring to julius in a whole new way okay. subaru, whos unrestrained and incapable of being on the down low about anything, and julius, whos always holding himself back with a gazillion layers of repression, starts learning to let go a bit...

but also juliotto meet again. its terribly awkward and they both agreed to never speak of their awkward encounters again. subaru is going ??? and reinhard is clueless. otto then also goes to save reinhard and felt from heinkel trying to take felt hostage, which was also terribly awkward but reinhard and felt are grateful about it (but lbr if reinhard and otto knew each other deeper reinhard would maybe be a little. Apprehensive. around otto while otto would be sympathetic with reinhard bc hes like male emilia). but then while otto manages not to get erased by gluttony....... julius gets erased. of course. which you know results in being forgotten by reinhard in julius's THIRD first meeting ever with reinhard. and subarus the only one who remembers him of course.

then arc 6 happens :,))))) and julius of course has to confront his ideas of knighthood, his identity, his self esteem, and who he is outside of His Name. and also julius gets his ass beat by reid. his childhood idol. who reinhard KNEW was a shitty person but never ever told julius (whether this is because reinhard wanted to spare julius's hero worship or because reinhard never got the chance to tell julius is hard to say lajdsf). but julius does get to triumphantly win in the end!! grow as a person!!! learn to undo a bit of that repression and not hold himself to impossible standards all the time!! hes growing still!!! hes finally solidified his friendships with people like subaru and emilia!! hes remaking his relationship with anastasia!! hes asserted himself, hes planning on going to meet reinhard again one day and duel him!! things are looking up even if its still bittersweet that he doesnt have his name back yet!! does this mean?? perhaps?? a HAPPY ENDING?? julius can have the two men (reinhard and subaru) he admires the most in his life?????? as friends???? or as boyfriends?????? slowburn mutual pining????????????????????????????????????????

and then comes. arc 8 otto. that piece of shit.

julius is very much someone who has to grapple with the weight of the expectations that people throw at him. and also reinhard is someone who May envy julius a bit, but there's also you know, joshua and subaru with the Explicit Envy and (past) resentment because theyre placing heavy expectations on julius!! theyre pointing blame at julius!! julius is trying to find himself outside of stuff like that, especially after arc 6, but he's still got stuff to work on you know? he still has duties to fulfill!! loyalty that he has to act on bc hes gotta help subaru and co in arc 8!! and then in comes otto.

otto is also someone with expectation placed on him, but its Different. ottos mostly a nobody and when hes Not a nobody, his reputation tends to be Derogatory. hes a menace. hes a bad luck charm. hes grappling with the fact that he has to keep being left behind - post-arc 5 bc he was injured, but also repeatedly during arcs 7 and 8 because hes too physically weak to be on the same playing field as emilia or garfiel or subaru on the battlefield. he feels Useless after placing his identity on the expectation that hes Dependable and Useful.

julius is a bit more on even ground with otto now that julius is. also mostly a nobody bc his name is still gone. and also julius had to deal with having that part of his identity crushed. julius tried to be useful over and over in arc 6 only to get his ass repeatedly curb stomped by reid in the beginning. he was a nobody. he wasnt dependable anymore. and also otto is that one guy he had a Passing Fling with over having The Ones Who Got Away and julius was still vaguely hopeful about maybe being pals at least but ottos brushed him off a bit since arc 5. theyre like each others secrets you know? and now otto doesnt know that shit - julius is the only one who Knows - and otto also hates julius's fucking guts now. over SUBARU. and julius has been through this whole rodeo clown circus with arc 3 subaru so this is an absolutely terrible ride through memory lane.

and this is julius's THIRD twink that hates him for terribly unfair reasons. julius is very tired and a bit heartbroken in this au trying to pretend it doesnt bother him. on one level it doesnt. bc ottos pathetic and clearly Overcompensating for Something. on another level it kinda does bc julius had a Thing going with otto. and otto is the complete opposite of julius. like hes different from the other guys julius has liked.

julisuba is about complimentary opposites - they appear Extremely Different at first glance but theyre very similar. theyre people who try to look and act bigger than they are, people who keep reaching to be The Best, to be Perfect, because theyre overcompensating. theyre worried their entire identity is only built off of trying to be bigger than the shadow that other people in their lives (like their families) cast. but they cant reach perfection. and julius is like subaru but if subaru tried to really make himself "refined" - if he tried to stop putting his heart on his sleeve all the time. reinsuba are very similar too. theyre very refined knights who try to keep themselves in check at all times while the weight of the world is on their shoulders. they cant have a hair out of place. except julius is like the "smaller" version of reinhard. julius is less powerful. its like comparing a human and a "god" - reinhard, whos untouchable. but its a double edged sword, because julius gets to be a normal person, because half the expectation placed on him is also purely from himself, while reinhard isnt. reinhard isnt Free. hes on a leash by the kingdom and his family. julius even gets his kind of "celebrity" status stolen from him via the loss of his name. hes truly kind of Normal now - julius is like if reinhard didnt have his crazy abilities and had a little more of a chance to be free.

otto? yeah otto is. very very far from all of that. hes so obviously imperfect that most of his reputation, when its brought up, is just him being known as a mess who's caused various forms of chaos everywhere he goes. either that or hes just. There. Invisible. very very average. and otto is someone who wants a nice comfortable life, someone who wants to fit in - julius and subaru arent Exactly like that, and while reinhard also wants to be normal, ottos the one who has more of an opportunity. but he doesnt. because otto Dooms Himself by being recklessly cutthroat. otto is like if subaru was just. More of an asshole, so ottojuli would just be a rather Extreme Challenge for julius to have to deal with HAH. and normally otto is someone who repays how people treat him - a very "you treat me like this, i'll treat you the same way in turn" kind of deal, except ottos developed a vendetta against julius and its basically like if subaru never let go of his arc 3 julius vendetta.

yes so anyway. etc etc stuff probably happens but i ran out of ideas lajdlfjasdf i just think combining ALL the boy drama and recontextualizing + adding to canon would be. batshit crazy. and terribly entertaining. im so sorry julius but i want to see you crack a bit under the pressure. reinjuli as a ship is like tragic gay yearning that never goes anywhere past being friends with quiet homoerotic tension, then julisuba is. you know. extreme rivals to lovers, starts out Rough but then ends up being super super sweet and theyre Trying their best underneath the self esteem issues. and then ottojuli is. toxic yaoi at its finest (pun intended). you get Every flavor of mlm possible!!

ok so you may be asking "ok what would you even name this fic then" and to that i say that this would be called To All the Boys I've Loved Before.

anyway i really wanna write this idea someday ill inform you guys (if youre reading this and are Interested) if it ever happens :< so. in conclusion this is just julius the entire time throughout all of these events:

Tiktok Army at it again

No because that breed (no disrespect to other Amazing Army on Tiktok this is not targeting you) can be absolutely horrifying and disgusting.

Now besides the whole disaster of Y/N povs where they sometimes paint the boys as sexual assaulters, insist on the “girlfriend” povs assuming their sexuality being straight yet jump at your neck for saying that maybe they are queer because “DON’T ASSUME THEIR SEXUALITY” um.. Okay Margaret

Now after the Naver article that came out about how Han Sohee is part of the MV “Female lead, main character, starring in the MV” not sure which one is more accurate because in a way the 3 of them can mean 3 different things but whatever, they’ve been absolutely disgusting about this whole thing.

People pointed out how Sohee is so JK coded, she gives off the same vibe as him and naturally a lot of Army commented stuff like “She’s basically the female version of him” or “They can easily pass as siblings” to which motherfuckers would comment “Couple” “You just don’t want to say couple because it shatters your fantasy” bullshit like that. I don’t want to put any links because quite honestly i don’t want to give these people more engagement than what they already have for shitty ass theories. When i told you that JK has a new dating rumor every time a woman breathes next to him i wasn’t even joking, how the fuck does shooting an MV with someone, be it clean or spicy, heck even shooting a sex scene means two people are a couple? Should i start shipping everyone in MVs, shows and movies now?

Does this mean...?” and i can already tell you that the comments were not it. Some hoping for a “fandom cleanse” because to them if JK gets intimate with a woman in an MV that’s already the end of the world because in the back of their pea sized brains they also believe that him doing any sort of intimacy heck even just holding hands with a woman (because God forbid the thought of him holding a man’s hand crosses their mind) is enough to mean he’s taken.

And i’ll give that to you if you think my boy is straight you do you but here’s the thing, there’s no point in hoping for a fandom cleanse because of an MV because after all that there’s still a reality he lives in, is he (as a straight man lol) taken irl? But of course he is taken according to the 5813 rumors that come out about him every 2 to 3 business days.

My brain is a shipping mess rn.

Like. Words can not even properly articulate the dilemma I am in regarding my story and the relationships within it.

Just.

Vigcup and dagcup are so cute. They're both literally enemies to friends to lovers and they hold so much fuel for angst and hurt/comfort and fluffy cuddles by a fireplace and the trust that is built up and I-

And Viggo and Dagur fighting to win Hiccups affection is such a top tier idea and I'm surprised nobody has written about it before. Viggo giving Hiccup flowers, handmade gifts, poetry he's written for him. Dagur trying to combat all that and not really knowing how. Angst and self doubt and comfort and whatnot follows.

Then again hicstrid is amazing. They're so wholesome and, yeah, it's kinda basic, but it's still so cute. They care for each other so much and it's adorable. And their dragons are best friends which makes it even cuter.

But Heather is also so freaking gay for Astrid that it's not even funny and they would be so cute together. Friends to lovers. Warrior women who would kill and die for each other. They're such an amazing team in the show and I just.

I think about all this and think I have it figured out and then my brain just. It's just like "hey, what about Dagur being a disaster bi for both Viggo and Hiccup?" and I'm suddenly sent reeling again. Especially with with found family aspect that literally has Viggo helping Dagur raise his adopted son and being deemed the kids 'second dad'.

This has already been decided BTW. Its set in stone. Dagur and Viggo are raising a child together in my story and Ryker helps out and is that kinda aloof uncle figure.

They take turns keeping an eye on this bundle of chaos and unfathomable energy. Have to sleep in small cuddle piles because this child refuses to sleep at all if he can't use at least one of his dads as a pillow. Viggo and Dagur get to see softer sides of each other that completely contradict their usual reputations.

Then Krogan comes along and becomes another father/the mother figure of this family and my brain just.

Implodes.

Kroggo. Angst. Hurt/comfort. Fluff. Trauma buddies.

And it's all just a love pentagram at this point and I haven't even thought about the other riders or any other relationships because my brain just. Latches. Locks its jaws on a collection of ideas and shakes it all around like a rabid animal.

"At least you guys have a better health class than we do back home," Luz commented.

"They don't teach you guys basic anatomy?" Amity asked with a raised eyebrow. Luz shook her head.

"They barely teach us about the reproductive system and gross stuff like that." She flipped to another page of her textbook. "Most of it is wrong anyways. Like, I only read fanfiction and I know it's wrong. The rest of our bodies haven't really been mentioned since fourth grade. And even then all it was about was how many bones are in our body and what our stomach, heart, and lungs do. We never really talked about any other organs or what our muscles do or anything. Here everything is so detailed."

"So you don't know how your body works?"

"No, I do know. Kind of, at least. Not everything but enough to know that the school is wrong." Amity looked at the papers she had set beside her.

"Well, for extra credit you can do a report on a being with a different anatomy than you. And if it's okay with you I'd like to do you. Not because I'm curious or anything just because it would be really unique," she said quickly.

"Only if I can do you," Luz bargained.

"Deal." Amity ran her finger under the words and read them out loud quietly to herself. "Species name, sex, external appearance, limbs, type of vertebrae, organs, manner of movement, diet, hot or cold-blooded, differences from my species, other notes, and space for a drawing."

"That's a lot of work for some extra credit," Luz observed.

"Eh, it's actually not much compared to what I had to do for history class one time," Amity replied. "Do you have a paper? I might have a spare."

"I have one actually. I was going to bribe King to let me do him." She rummaged through her bag and pulled out a paper identical to Amity's.

"Oh, if you want to do it on him it's okay-"

"No! No, it's okay. I'm pretty curious about witches too. So, where do you want to start? Do you want to draw me? I'll do a pose!" Amity shook her head rapidly, her cheeks a furious shade of red at the idea.

"No, no, no, no. I can do that later it's fine. I guess I'll just ask you some things. Like how are your eyes different than mine?"

"What do you mean?"

"You can see those glyphs. When you showed me that video of Eda casting a light spell, I didn't see anything. I can only see them when you draw them."

"As far as I know my eyes are exactly like yours. Maybe it's because I'm human and that's the only way I can do magic. Maybe the Boiling Isles can just sense that. But then how could I see it on my phone… I don't know actually. I'll go with no but don't quote me on that."

"It looks like most of our features are the same, at least on the outside. Besides our ears and hands," Amity stated.

"Wait, our hands? What's different? Give me your hand." Luz quickly grabbed Amity's hand and pulled it up to her face to look at it closely.

"M-my fingers are longer, along with my nails. It's true for all witches. It's for magic because we use our hands for it and our fingers are really the way we cast spells." Luz released her and scribbled something down. Amity held her hand to her chest and tried to keep herself composed.

"What about your ears? Why are they pointed?" Luz reached out to touch them before jerking her hand back when Amity jumped. "Sorry, I should've asked first.'

"It's fine," Amity decided after a few seconds.

"Fine that I didn't ask or fine that I touch?"

"Both." Luz carefully held the pointed tip of Amity's ear in between her fingers. Besides being pointed, it was exactly like hers, maybe a little softer. "I don't know why it's like that. Kind of a little weird I guess, but it could be so that it's possible to tell the difference between witches and humans. Or maybe it's because we're more sensitive to noise." Luz wrote a couple more things down.

"Can they move?" Amity nodded.

"Yeah, but I don't decide when. Some witches can make their ears move whenever they want, but for the rest of us, our ears only move to indicate our emotions or when we hear something. Can human ears move?"

"Yes and no." Luz made a triangle with her hands. "A few people can. Like, ten or twenty percent of humans. I can't. Also, they don't move like yours do. They just kind of wiggle a tiny bit. It's still pretty cool though, but your ears are cooler." Amity's cheeks turned slightly pink.

"Well, human ears are neat I guess," she mumbled.

"Oh, oh! Above your ears! Your hair! Before I forget I wanna ask you about witch hair! Can witch hair come in any colour? I've seen witches with human hair colours, but then I've seen witches with green hair, blue hair, pink hair, purple hair, I don't know if it's natural but if it is-"

"It's natural," Amity interrupted. "At least, for most witches it is. As far as I know, it can come in any colour." Luz pointed at her hair.

"Is your hair naturally brown, or green, or both, or was it brown and now it's green?" Amity ran her fingers through her hair self-consciously.

"It's brown. I dye it green because the rest of my family has green hair." She straightened her back. "Doesn't human hair come in any colour?"

"No. Human hair is naturally blonde, brown, black, red, or orangish. People dye their hair for fun. I've dyed mine before, I might still have an old picture I could show you sometime, but after my hair grew out and I cut it I decided I wanted to stick with brown for a bit."

"Is human hair the same as witch hair?"

"Probably. Wanna find out?" Amity reached her hand out, then pulled it back, then reached out again. "You can touch my hair, it's fine." Amity put her hand on the side of Luz's head. She kept it there for a few moments then took it back. She started scribbling something down and Luz shifted positions, folding her legs underneath herself and clasping her hands in her lap. "Could I touch your hair?"

"Huh? Oh, sure." She batted her hair lightly and giggled.

"I feel like a cat."

"You might be one."

"My sweatshirt agrees." She held her hand in place and ran her thumb over the surface of her hair. "Our hair is the same."

"As far as I can tell. Maybe you could use some of the things you learned in alchemy to make sure."

"I could, or I could check if the library has anything on witch versus human biology."

"That would kind of make everything we're doing now redundant."

"More information doesn't make previous information redundant," Luz argued. "Okay, that's outward appearances done. This is going to be the hard part. Do you have different organs than me besides the magic thing on your heart?" Amity looked at her for a few moments.

"I don't... exactly know what you have for organs?"

"Oh, right. Well, I can sketch something quickly. Here." She flipped over the paper and drew an outline of a person. "Our heart is here, sans magic sac. Then we have our stomach here, then our lungs up here…" she drew each small part of the body with Amity overlooking and sketching down some rough copies in her notes.

"If that is what your organs are like, then yeah I think so. Except we also have another set of veins. Not technically an organ but that's beside the point."

"Really? For what?" Luz asked.

"For magic, duh," she laughed. She looked at her paper one more time and paused. "I'm sorry for having to ask this, but what's your sex?"

"Biologically female. I guess I have to ask yours too?"

"Same."

"Okay, obviously bipedal, mammal, wait are witches mammals?"

"Yes, and warm-blooded," Amity explained.

"What's your diet? Like, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, something else?"

"I don't really have a choice, I'm an omnivore. What about you?"

"I'm also an omnivore, although I have tried some other diets in the past."

"I think that's everything, I just need to draw a model. Hang on, do you know how to cast a layer spell?" Amity questioned. Luz shook her head.

Amity drew a few overlapping circles that were different shades. She quickly cast a spell and two of the circles flew above the paper slightly, one going a little higher than the other. Luz leaned forward and looked in between the circles. She turned her head to change angles a few times before smiling widely and drawing out one of her circles. She drew three lines above one another and then a diagonal line over those. She pressed it and the ink on the paper layered itself as Amity's had. She gave Amity a quick hug.

"New spell! What gave you the idea?" She asked, keeping her hands on Amity's shoulders.

"Well, to draw the model you need a layer spell to do the organs, then bone structure, then a normal drawing," Amity explained.

"This opens up a whole new world for art. I gotta go home, I'll see you tomorrow, Amity!" Luz haphazardly gathered her papers and hurried away, leaving Amity alone with a warm feeling in her heart.

i'm not even sure who i ship in stranger things anymore dammit.

Like... obviously not Mileven. I hate mileven and i always have. It's basically been based off of some crush mike had on eleven when she couldn't even talk.

And i don't think i ship byler. Like... it's cute and all... and i wouldn't be upset if it happened... but mike is being such a dipshit about everything i don't think it's realistic tbh and i don't think he's mature enough for a relationship.

Jancy is just becoming a total fucking disaster. Like what the actual fuck jonathan don't "slo mo break up" with the girl you've been in love with for so many fucking years.

And like.... stancy.... like.... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. idfk.

And then Elmax.... i like, but i think if i wasn't so gay i wouldn't actually see it... i think they're honestly better off as friends. They're more of a comfort ship for me lol. Like not realistic but if i'm sad i'm going to watch the first few episodes of season three on repeat.

I have only three ships i am completely sure about, which is Jopper, Lumax, and whatever the hell vickie and robin's ship name is. (Also btw i'm not mentioning Dustin and Suzie in here at all because i don't think we know suzie as a character enough. But i mean they're cute so sure i ship it).

And also btw. Just like. I hate any ship to do with eddie. Like steddie is ok, but when it comes to people shipping chrissie and eddie. Like come on. It's like you're pulling couples out of thin air. Personally eddie gives me aroace vibes, but even disregarding that i just think that chrissie and eddie is disgusting. They would've been adorable friends if chrissie ever survived, and their interaction in the forest was like, the best thing ever and it helped you see eddie's soft side, but the fact that people saw romance in that is lost on me. Eddie and steve is more believable, but i still don't ship it.

Also i feel like i'm forgetting someone but idrc.

Terrible or Potentially Amazing Ship Ask (I threw in a few OC/Canon Characters but feel free to ignore): Angel/Melony, Max/Lake, Angel/Lake, Melony/Elizabeta, Melony/Alcina, Mia/Angel, Melony/Elizabeta

Aight I'mma start with the ones that I don't think work for one reason or another.

Angel/Melony

Alrigh so, the main problem with this one is… Angel doesn't date women pfff. Maybe in some AU where one of them is AMAB it would work but as is Angel wouldn't be into it. (Also I feel like Melon is lowkey scared of them). All that said, Angel would definatly awaken some things in Melony that Cassandra doesn’t.

Melony/Alcina

This one I have talked about, and it has the potential to be either really cute or really… weird. Because I think Melony would end up seeing Alcina as more of a motherly figure (and not in a "omg Mommy~" kind of way. Like a legit mom figure way) just because of how Alcina acts. Which makes for some weird…Oedipus type thing in my mind. It just rides a fine line to me and the thought weirds me out pfff.

Mia/Angel

Same reason as Mel and Angel, they don't date women. HOWEVER, I do think these two have a potential for an interesting relationship. Like, the idea of Mia dating a murderer feels really interesting because I think Angel would end up inadvertently giving Mia a kind of complex about the things she’s done. Mia confessing to Angel “I’ve killed innocent people.” and Angel being like “That’s so hot.” and basically telling Mia the shit she did isn’t a big deal. Not that it wasn’t her fault, or that she shouldn’t feel guilty/upset, but that they find it attractive and want details. Because that’s like… the shit they live for. (Watch that translate into their sex life somehow.) I do think the only real reason Angel would date/be attracted to Mia, though, would be genital preference.

Okay, now the others;

Max/Lake

Okay, so, I’ve said Max is straight before BUT this relationship is interesting because it would be a purely sexual thing since Lake is Aromantic. I don’t think Max would ever date a man, or an AMAB Non-Binary person like Lake. Sexually, however, I think he’s slightly more open. I think this would be kind of a… “We meet up to smoke pot and sometimes we hook up” type of thing. Like it’s very Friends with Benefits. I feel like they have great sex, though. Max definitely leads/doms, but they’re both switches for sure, and Lake doesn’t mind getting pulled around. And you know they can go for hours. I don’t think they cuddle or do a whole lot of after stuff, because it’s just not their thing. (It’s also a weird thing of like… Max fucks them, because they want it [and they’re a good lay], but he doesn’t hold any major attraction towards them) Outside of sex, they’re still friendly, but you can tell they aren’t like… besties or anything.

Angel/Lake

I like the idea of this one, but I also feel like it would be kind of one sided. It would start off as a sex thing, that over time Angel begins to take as some kind of romantic relationship (even though Lake never said anything about romance). Lowkey I think it would get kind of stalker-ish/yandere-ish (as much as I hate that word). Lake thinks Angel is really cool and they like hanging out with them for sure, and I think they could grow to have a strong platonic love for Angel, but I also thing there’s some part of Angel that would be upset over Lake not liking them romantically. Overall, a really interesting relationship, but probably inevitably ends badly.

Melony/Elizabeta

SO GOOD IT’S ON HERE TWICE! This is the top tier out of all of these imo. You know these two are HEALTHY AS FUCK. It’s soft and squishy and fucking adorable. You just know they’re both such gay disasters. Melony is embarrassed everytime Liza picks her up and carries her around. Liza is always blushing and clumsy around Melony, and you know Mel finds it adorable. Mel loves hearing Liza talk about plants and explain how they work, Liza always tries to help Mel bake despite knowing jack shit about it. They’re sitting by the fireplace with hot chocolate just snuggling together. Melon is devastated when Liza has to go to Donna’s, but they come over as often as possible and I feel like at some point, when Donna and Liza are closer, Donna would just… ask Alcina if she can have Melony as well, and then the two of them just live at Donna’s. And I think they’d be okay with that.

Diakko:

Holy crap what’s not to love? I adore how they’re actually given time as enemies like yes Diana be *that mean girl.* I wanted more time for them to develop their relationship more but Shiny Chariot conquers all, and I love how it’s like. They balance each other out so well. And I love that they share the experience of getting their magic back, and all the contrast of their respective backstories it’s just so cool. Also Diana is gay and European and as soon as Akko finds out about the legally blonde song she teases Diana relentlessly with it

Amandakko:

One of my personal OTPs, I’m a sucker for sunshine x sunshine protector and gays doing chaos together. I’m realizing that everyone is just a bit of a jerk to Akko except Lotte at the beginning but hey that’s school? Meh. Anyways. Basically Ryumako but with less awful character design and more Catradora. I love the idea that they talk to each other offscreen and relate by both struggling in academics, and that they both love the thrill of adventure. If the series were longer I’d kill for more episodes with them doing random stuff. It could be as simple as baking cookies idk

SuAkko:

I’ve been digging more friends to lovers stuff bc I’m very tired and can’t find myself any enemies so I project my feelings onto ships like these. Adventures in Sucyworld was what sold me on this bc holy crap was that a cute episode. Akko being Sucy’s knight in shining armor and Sucy’s inner thoughts totally shipping them like. Gah, amazing. Lovely. They’re a disaster together and I love them

Lotteakko:

Why don’t the best friends ever become something more? Istg. It happened in TOH and it happened here too. Lotte and Akko are so sweet and stuff it’s just like. They compliment each other in a different way to Diakko and it’s just as neat. Please one day let the character with glasses date the protagonist /hj. Honestly I wish there were more content of them towards the latter half of the series.

Constanzakko

Before you ask, I checked the wiki and I’m pretty sure they’re the same age, Constanze just has zero height. “I will build a gundam for us to pilot” type relationship, I’m kinda realizing that even without ships, LWA hinges on Akko’s ability to find common ground with everyone despite sticking out like a sore thumb at first. She manages to get Constanze to open up a little and that’s amazing.

Jasminkakko:

GIVE JASMINKA A CHARACTER YOU COWARDS. SHE AND AKKO ARE BOTH FOOD THIEVES AND TROUBLEMAKERS AAAAAAAAAAAAA. I’m going slightly feral bc the only member of Green team not to have an episode with Akko was Jasminka, and she’s such a cool character. Tank stats, internal demon, kindness, gah if only there were more time in the series. They’d totally bake stuff together and do random shit like punch trees

How I feel about this character

Love him! Problematic fave, vampire blorbo, etc. etc.

Buffy was the first show I watched after I realised I liked girls because I knew there were gay witches in it - but that doesn’t start until mid s4 and s1 was so slow. Spike showed up in early s2 and I liked him from his first scene, he convinced me to stick with the show and now it’s one of my favourites!

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Buffy! Their relationship is so fun, sad, romantic, interesting. Of course there’s issues but unfortunately with BTVS there’s issues with every character, relationship, plot - the writing is a true disaster sometimes, so I’ve learned to just take what I love and run with it.

Also Dru! Their whole epic vampire romance with the Whirlwind and then for a century after, just being madly in love and creating chaos wherever they go, what’s not to love??? I don’t want them together in the future but I love what they had.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Dawn!!!!! They are my favourite relationship in the Buffy-verse. A punk vampire who’s trying to learn to be good and a 14 year old who used to be (and sort of still is) an eldritch horror - name a more iconic duo.

They play off each other so well with the banter, immaturity, protectiveness, care. The summer when Buffy was dead and Spike stepping up for Dawn is so wonderful. I’ll never forgive the show for forgetting about and ditching their relationship.

My unpopular opinion about this character

People get way too into “is he really good” “does he deserve redemption” “you shouldn’t like him because [insert basically anything here]” bleh. He’s a fictional vampire, not a real person in a court case. He’s a great character!! He’s fun and fresh as a villain, he’s hilarious as an ally, and then complicated and charming as a love interest. I enjoy his character, I don’t need to start writing a thesis on how ‘actually it’s okay that I like this character’

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

More friendship with the Scoobies!

Spike and Anya should’ve been best friends like they get along so well and have so much in common (also all their scenes together are hilarious). And Spike and Tara have some really sweet moments, I so so wish they’d had more interactions. Also Spike and Willow had great chemistry, but they barely have any scenes in the later seasons. Just a lot of underused potential :(

I'm a multishipper and really into queer and neurodivergent headcanons. Gonna list my most common ships/headcanons here.

Ships: Hilson, Choreman, Chase/Park, Taubner, and Hudson

Queer headcanons: I firmly believe no one in the main cast is cishet and can even be queer in multiple different interpretations but some of my faves are bi arospec House, nonbinary Thirteen, genderfluid Chase, transmasc lesbian Park, and gay Taub!

Neurodivergent headcanons: House, Cameron, Chase, and Thirteen are all autistic. Kutner and Park are auDHD. Basically everyone is mentally ill in some fashion.

Tagging is a lawless land on this blog. Sometimes I tag ships/fandoms sometimes I don't. I mostly use the tags as a place to yammer on about whatever I want.

I have three AUs/headcanons I've created/co created that may or may not have content tagged. These are:

Wolfstar is like a household name of the HP fandom. They have the range, and the fanbase to cover it. I really like the First Wizarding War stories, because *gestures* pain. For modern AUs I adore Stressed Overworked Sirius meets Bookshop/Librarian/Barista With Secret Traumatic Backstory Remus. Also I really do like this trend of remus and regulus being besties and accidentally getting into dating Sirius and James without anyone knowing they’re dating each other’s best friend/brother

Scent of the Moon a series, when Sirius loses his shit and announces to his parents that fuck them, he’s gay and fuck them, Walburga loses her shit and tosses him to Bellatrix who tosses him to Grayback. Sirius escapes barely alive and with a furry little problem. But, all turns out well. Regulus is so very lovely in here and by so very lovely I mean a bossy little shit whose love language is secretly protecting Sirius from afar

and they were soulmates by Propheciesanddreams (propheciesanddreams) wrong number AU, i love those

Dorlene's cute! I like Gryffindor!Marlene and Slytherin!Dorcas tripping over their words and feet because they're disaster lesbians for each other. But also if we're doing canon Hogwarts era I need them to get together with minimal drama. Leave the angst for Jegulus, these girls were snogging behind tapestries from the day one. They're a well-estabilished pairing, and I love that for them. (I don't really read them-centric fics tho. I'm character-oriented and the character who made my head turn was Regulus, so I mostly read them as side pairing.)

For Jily I'd say You Belong With Me or Our Song or Mine or by Taylor Swift... basically any Taylor from that era xD Also Toulavá by SEBASTIAN btw Daddy's Lessons by Beyoncé is 100% a Lily song to me

What is the point of RoseKiller if they're not unhinged? Actually ask me for a RoseKiller rant the next time. I've got Feelings. But their songs are like... The Ready Set by Killer, Flesh by Simon Curtis but the biting is metaphorical and romantic, this Für Elise remix, and eSeMeS is for them falling apart after Regulus' death :D

Fave Marvel ships! Tony/Bucky has some delishious shit, like it was a whole era, Bucky/Sam is fun, Tony/Loki fit together really well like oh my god I LOVE Tony supporting Loki through giving a middlefinger to Odin. Tony/Rhodey is SO underappreciated; every time I see someone call Steve Tony's best friend I go feral bite bite bite kill kill kill. I need to go and have a look if there are any Harley Keener/Shuri fanfics, they literally only ocurred to me just now but it could be interesting...

Yuletide Letter

Dear Writer,

Thank you for taking the time to write for me, I'm excited to see what you come up with! If it'd be helpful for you, I've listed some likes and interpretations below along with my Do Not Wants. For any potential treaters, I have allowed automatic gifting.

LIKES: messy relationships - morally grey characters, doing the right thing for the wrong reason, doing the wrong thing for the right reason - character study and character-driven plot - competency and loyalty - being immersed into a culture, place, or time - soulbonds, a/b/o, and other supernatural tropes that draw from destined for each other, whether they like it or not - smut (some particular likes: D/s and power imbalance, rough sex, mouth kink, exploring erogenous zones, dubcon -- especially with these requests, I'm really into exploring sexuality outside of its most traditionally romantic and tender expression.)

DO NOT WANT (unless specifically requested): serious, graphic injury on screen - body fluids other than come, spit, and sweat, and preferably not an overwhelming amount of those, either - genderswap, focus on genderplay - natural disasters or apocalypse scenarios - requested characters in happy, endgame relationships with non-requested characters

My definition of "graphic injury" is basically going past canon typical depictions. Video game logic that says getting shot isn't that big of a deal, "Johnny felt his knee seize up," William has done very bad things are all fine. But I don't want to read about the specifics.

The unrequested endgame DNW also has some holes in it. I'm very down to my requested characters just going after each other, but I don't mind and can really enjoy flirting, flings, relationships that aren't meant to last, trying to move on and failing, or unresolved/unaddressed sexual tension. The only route I absolutely don't want is anyone I've requested happily ending up in a romantic relationship with another character.

I also realized as I was writing this that for each of my requests, someone ends up (presumably) dead. This is more of a preference than a DNW, but I'd prefer if the story kept away from "cold" grief, for lack of a better word. In Far Cry, for instance, grief is obviously, canonically a massive motivating force for Dani, and I don't at all mind a fic exploring that. This is opposed to, say, the nothingness in The Month Pages of New Moon. There's no right way, but within a story, the former is more engaging to me in this moment in time. I'm also, of course, not at all opposed to presumed dead fix-its, canon divergence, or just placing the story before the canonical death.

FANDOMS

Bullet Train (2022) - Lemon, Tangerine

Admittedly, I did fall into the trap of considering whether the twins were twins the same way gay couples used adoption as a familial loophole -- they just had so much chemistry! The bickering! The familiarity! ... Finding out they really are brothers did not make me ship it less. For the purpose of this request, I'm cool with reading a platonic brother relationship, they actually are husbands AU, outright incest, They Grew Up Together In Such A Way That "Brother" Is The Best/Easiest Way To Describe Their Relationship But It's Still Not Really Really Incest; whatever floats your boat.

Whatever your preferred answer is, I really do love their relationship, and I'd love to read more about their history, how they got into the business, developing their (very, very messy) style...

The Card Counter (2021) - Cirk Baufort, William Tell

I must have entered the theater with my twisted homosexual hat on very tight when I saw this, because I genuinely thought there was a chance that they might go there with Cirk/William, with William/La Linda purposefully being a stiff, unbelievable testament to how Tell will never be able to adjust to a more normal, moral life. C'est la vie.

But, as is the magic of fic, I'd move to read about Tell's attempt at pseudo paternal guidance falling off the rails; Cirk being very very very stubborn about the things he wants; Tell's variable ability to get what he wants and maintain control and how far he really wants to push it (preferably, for me, not that far, at least not with Cirk, but still with a healthy scoop of fucked up).

Far Cry 6 - Male Dani Rojas, Alejo Ruiz

Again, I was shipping it immediately, only for it to be taken from me only slightly less immediately. But Alejo still stuck with me -- maybe in part because this is the first time I was really motivated to go for the "secret" ending immediately -- and I felt very vindicated while tripping balls on the mad dash to Matías.

There are a couple layers I found really interesting and gut-punch about that scene: that Dani and Alejo weren't just like "lmao fuck outta here!" but had actual plans and dreams for once they left; the guilt and insecurity that Dani carried throughout the game; that "Lita" wasn't exactly fully wrong that Dani moral motivation wasn't exactly iron clad at all times; and that Cortez was definitely a negative influence on Dani's self conceptualization.

So, basically I'm really interested in The Orphans' lives leading up to the revolution, the messes Dani got himself into and out of, the decision to leave, the inability to go to. Has Dani always attracted older male figures that want to sculpt him in their image? Did Alejo have a Feeling that an active civil war might not be the best space for Dani to be in, even as a survivor? If Dani and Alejo were fucking, as I like to assume, what was going on that made him think "Yeah, we're all in together but also he's still in it for the girls on the other side"?

Point Break - Bodhi, Johnny Utah

I mean. It's Point Break. It's hard to even express how gay it is and how much doomed chemistry Bodhi and Johnny have better than the movie does itself. Let them fuck! Let Johnny go bad! Let Bodhi live and have them figure how to live on the edge without, you know, killing and robbing!

One angle that I do find interesting and that didn't get unpacked enough, unsurprisingly given the genre, was Johnny's dissatisfaction within being The Good Ohio Boy Who Does The Good Things With The Good Guys, and how flawed that whole structure is to begin with. He's obviously disillusioned with it all by the end, but I'd love to spend more time with Johnny as he discovers himself and his likes and goals after losing so much of what he'd been grounding himself in.

It’s very telling where the MCU is in terms of quality when MoM is literally months away from coming out and yet people care more about the cameos rather than the actual plot (not to mention completely ignoring the light-washing/de-aging of America Chavez, an Afro-Latina lesbian woman and the whitewashing of Wanda’s Romani/Jewish heritage that has been going on since AoU)

Not to mention how everything that fans have praised about NWH is things from the old Spider-Man films. Hell, even with Thor 4, there’s more talk about Valkyrie’s sexuality and her “finding her queen” rather than anything about the main antagonist or plot.

And don’t even get me started on the disaster that was the Loki series and how supposed loyal fans can watch Loki be tortured and humiliated and call it “therapy” while they go and worship a female variant of him that’s about as interesting as watching paint dry.

The MCU only cares about putting out as much content as possible just to make a fast buck. It’s honestly sad considering how in Phases 1 and 2 they seemed to care about the characters and making each movie have a unique feel to it. Now everything feels the same, everyone acts the same and there’s no sense of individuality or creativity anymore.

I fully believe that Age of Ultron was the beginning of the end for the MCU, cause that’s honestly where things started to go really wrong in my eyes.

People focus more on Wanda in MoM then they do Strange.....and its his film. Like, I still ain't a huge fan of Doctor Strange's first film, cause whitewashing seems to LOVE this particular set of stand alone MCU films, but like.....no discussion of Strange or Wong or ANY Doctor Strange characters and elements, just Wanda and the cameos and its just....dam, kinda feel bad for Strange Stans right now. MCU be like with ANY character of color at this rate.....mainly oddly the woman of color from comics: "Can we get a whiter version please?" Like, shout out still to the Funko of Miss America for....actually making it worser. Dunno how, BUT THEY DID. And we all know why they suddenly mixing up the Young Avengers ages....given Young Avengers had members who are gay and in Loki's case, genderfluid, but well, MCU won't allow rep to full be seen so already betting we won't even see lesbian Miss America....

And with Wanda, its like......thanks, you failed in casting 101 as she is white as fuck in MCU, has the power to lose her accent and isn't Jewish cause no Magneto means no Jewish twins I guess.....no wonder she's appearing in MoM, she fits right in with whitewashed Ancient One and lightwashed!Miss America. No Way Home's entire hype was literally the old villains coming back. Like, people screamed more at the pumpkin bomb being thrown in trailer followed by Doctor Octopus' appearing with, "Hello, Peter", then the rest of the trailer, and if that ain't obvious that No Way Home was hyped soley on the cameos, then the aftermath of people soley focusing on Andrew's Peter and Tobey's Peter is obvious enough. Given MCU cut Valkyrie's Bi scene....I am VERRY skeptical off chances we'll see Valkyrie romance Jane, but....I'll wait until trailer I guess, but yeah....looking at any hype on Love And Thunder, its just kinda Jane's return and Valkyrie finding a queen....but in all honestly, given the Guardians are also taking over a plot in this film, I dunno what I'd prefer to be hyped at this point.

I hate Loki Show....so much. Like, keep in mind, up until that point, I'd been hopeful for it and TFATWS, cause even from trailer I knew I wouldn't like W/V, and first trailer for Loki? Yes, but watching the actual show? It was suffering. It wasn't about Loki like promised to fans, it was about him being basically secondary to Sylvie's journey and suddenly he's in love with her and while she can just, do whatever she wants without much happening, Loki get's literally tortured as a form of therapy.....and people ship Loki with the guy who did it.....thanks, I hate it. And don't get me started on Sylvie. She's literally an OC, a mashup of the two Enchantresses and....Lady Loki, cause genderfluid Loki was toooooo hard I guess, and she's just impossible to watch cause MCU makes her into a girlboss.....while also sprinkling in some incest/selfcest, but better not go too far....or stans will call me biphobic again for hating their ship.

Yeah, nowadays mcu is kinda just interested in cramming whatever movie or show they can really. Phase One-Two at least seemed to think over the films and such, but nowadays its like, "WANT A HAWKEYE SHOW?! WANT A SHE HULK SHOW?! WANT A CHRISTMAS AND HALLOWEEN SPECIAL?!" like.....its just there until MCU is basically beyond dead....well, more beyond dead then it is already.
