for the ask game: xueyao! ship it or not?

it's complicated!!! should be an answer for this meme, just for me, but I guess loosely speaking I'll say ship it (with some caveats, mostly that I ship it in the traditional sense exclusively as friends with benefits, and I'm much more attached to them as a platonic relationship)

What made you ship it? the whole dynamic between them! the partners in crime aspect but also the way that they are so very different. also the fact that xue yang knows jin guangyao with a depth and thoroughness that few people do, the good and the bad, and while I wouldn't say he understands him that's still something that I find fun to explore.

What are your favorite things about the ship? as with so many of my favorite dynamics, I think what particularly draws me about the relationship between these two (whatever form it takes) is the parallels/foils between them as two characters who are both outsiders in cultivation society, both seen as low and dirty by others, but who have responded to that very differently. where jin guangyao strives for acceptance and status, xue yang rebels by rejecting norms of society and all external judgment. and at the same time, xue yang makes jin guangyao laugh and offers a kind of unconditional acceptance that's decidedly scarce (and is willing to go to bat for him, in his own way), and jin guangyao offers xue yang a respect that pretty much nobody else does. love that for both of them.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I feel like there are two unpopular-ish opinions I have about this ship, though as usual I don't have a great metric for what is actually "unpopular", but based on what I see around about the relationship between these two: the first is that I think jin guangyao genuinely liked xue yang - he wasn't just a job or a duty he was forced to deal with, but actually at least sort of a friend, if one who is (as friends sometimes are) frustrating at times. this isn't to say that jin guangyao actually, like, approves of everything xue yang does (I think there are many ways in which they both think the other is profoundly, shall we say, misguided; their approach to society is almost diametrically opposed), but I think he does like him and, at least to a certain extent, enjoy his company.

on the flip side of that opinion, I do think that jin guangyao meant to have xue yang killed. I can see the justification behind saying that he didn't - that he just ushered him out the back door and someone else attacked him later; it certainly does fit with jin guangyao's modus operandi with other people that are inconvenient to him (sisi, notably) - but I think that jin guangyao would see that as too much of a risk, and xue yang himself as too much of a loose cannon, to turn him loose like that. I think he'd be sad about it, and reluctant, but ultimately the calculus comes down on the side of it being necessary in order to start over as chief cultivator and disassociate himself from his father's less popular actions.

Villainous friends are so precious too, there's just something about these two gremlins plotting their silly little demonic cultivation shenanigans together. And I think it's freaking hilarious how the whole thing feels like JGY sees them as reluctant colleagues, while XY thinks they are besties :')

The only thing stopping this from being higher in my JGY ships ranking list is the fact that what this little guy craves just as much as acceptance and love (or even more) is safety and security in his position among the gentry, and that's something XY can't really give him. If anything, he is the one bringing the political influence to their thing

Which pair is ✨couple goals✨ in MDZS? No pair, in my own personal opinion. I just.... No.

WangXian - The main couple. Surely they are perfection. Right. The kind of couple where one is putting all the effort and the other doesn't realise their feelings until they lose the person they love. Unless you're going for the person that's always waiting for the love of their life to come back, while the other makes lots of self sacrificing decisions for the sake of other people.

Xuanli - My favourite pair. If not for the couple that loves together,...dies together thing. That's probably better than the living in agony and pinning.

XiYao - I don't even.... The couple where one gets consistently blindsided and used by the other, not knowing their life is completely in the palm of the other's hand. They probably will always protect you, but is it worth the gaslighting?

NieLan - Not so bad. Anger Issues + Angel. Get you a partner who will yell at you for your bad ideas, then bully your evil best friend behind your back before proceeding to die.... With a partner that is getting gaslit so bad that they don't even realise that their partner is also getting gaslit. It's cute, but there doesn't seem to be proper balance.

NieYao - I love this Trainwreck of a ship, but homicide so..... definitely not goals. (TT)

3zun - Again, the homicide thing.

XueXiao - I shouldn't need to explain this Greek tragedy.

SongXiao - This is just as bad. They sacrifice so much for each other but don't even get the sour sweet reunion.

Songxuexiao - .........there was no happy ending.

SangCheng - See now, this could actually work. Probably the only couple to have not ever hurt each other. Just that they have very little interaction post-time skip. But pre-time skip we've got.... playful shenanigans.

None of the actual parent couples (Jiang Fengmian x Madam Yu. Jin Guangshan x Madam Jin. Wen Ruohan x Whoever the heck married him. The Lan parents. The Nie parents.) are couple goals. They all seem to be cursed to die together. It seems to be a straight couple thing. Probably better than the one dead, one alive thing we've got with queer couples. There was some space in the Lan parent's deaths but that doesn't make it any better.

For those who would ask about Xicheng:

Xicheng - It's cute. It really is. There's hardly a single toxic thing here cause we all know Jiang Cheng is more bark than bite, he won't hurt Lan Xichen. Lan Xichen won't hurt a fly. Surprisingly the best we got. It doesn't have a lot of canon backing, besides Jiang Cheng's list, so we don't know if this could end up as much of a disaster as all of the other ships. I like to imagine they good though. Not necessarily couple goals, but healthiest so far.

Other not so popular but can be traced to canon pairs:

XueYao - No. No. No.

ChengQing - We all know how that ended aka with barely anything happening at all. No thanks.

ChengNing - Yup, that's Jiang Cheng and Wen Ning. We also know how this ended. Still no.

Ningxian - Yes, that's Wei Wuxian with Wen Ning. It's not bad. A love that will save you over and over again. Actually sounds pretty cute. The dying part though....

SangXian - Yes, this does exist and it's actually pretty cool. This could actually be the golden goals pair. O_o Partner that resurrects you from the dead to clear you name? Uh. Hell yeah!!

Jin Guangyao/Xue Yang for the ship meme?

I feel like I tend to want them more as friends than romantic/sexual partners, though I do also enjoy "friends who have had probably ill-advised sex at least once, maybe twice, Xue Yang doesn't regret it but Jin Guangyao does a little bit."

What made you ship it?

I don't remember what exactly was the tipping point but it was probably the exchange between them while Nie Mingjue is about to get his head chopped off, and how easy Xue Yang seems around Jin Guangyao there - he's comfortable and relaxed and having a good time! Love that for him. But the Villainous Friends extra really sold me the rest of the way on them and their relationship being important to me.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

Part of it is definitely the way that there's a particular vibe they have with each other that doesn't work with anybody else. And I don't mean that in the sense of "murder gremlins" because the thing is that Jin Guangyao isn't a gremlin, actually, at all, but he is also someone who is constantly living under pressure from one place or another and Xue Yang is, while he's a problem for Jin Guangyao and undoubtedly a headache a lot of the time, also not someone who is putting pressure on Jin Guangyao to be anything other than who he is. Xue Yang doesn't have expectations! Xue Yang isn't ordering him to do awful things! Xue Yang has no power over him and in Jin Guangyao's position I think being around someone who (a) doesn't have any power over him but also (b) kind of ignores power hierarchies in general. Xue Yang lives in a space where everything that matters most to Jin Guangyao straight up doesn't matter, and I think there's something a little liberating to being around someone who has that kind of indifference, even if it makes no sense to Jin Guangyao.

And for Xue Yang...for all Jin Guangyao is his superior, (a) he gives Xue Yang an astonishing amount of liberties within that position and (b) Jin Guangyao still treats him like a person. I will never be over the fact that Jin Guangyao calls him "Xue-gongzi" in the Villainous Friends extra, and the way he responds to Xue Yang's "tongue tea? :D" by refusing it as politely as he might anyone else. People don't treat Xue Yang like that, in general! And it's important to me that Jin Guangyao does.

I also just, on a shallower level, really enjoy Jin Guangyao having a friend who is constantly going "aren't you tired of being nice? Don't you want to go apeshit?" and spends 99% of the time going "no. no I don't actually." And then there is the one time that he does go apeshit (on his dad) and Xue Yang is so hyped to be there for it, you know it, he's here like "GO OFF A-YAO" and you know what, even if I don't think that's actually what Jin Guangyao wants from life I think it's nice for him that he has supportive friends.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I feel like there's two poles when it comes to this relationship, one where Jin Guangyao never cared about Xue Yang and was just using him, and one where Jin Guangyao chose to let Xue Yang go and whatever led to him on the side of the road half dead happened later and was unrelated, and I end up in this middle ground where, like, Jin Guangyao did care about Xue Yang very much actually, and I think genuinely liked him, and also Xue Yang was an unpredictable loose cannon and threat to Jin Guangyao's security, and people hadn't completely dropped the wanting Xue Yang executed thing, and...ultimately he was too dangerous to leave alive. But that finding out Xue Yang didn't actually die is kind of a relief, actually.

Particularly when it's very clear that Xue Yang is not interested in retaliation and has other priorities, even if that is also sort of troubling for the reasons about his (former?) friend having sort of lost his mind.

You know that post about the characters' kinks (idk if you rbed it or someone else)?

I think it's mostly right about a-yao. he def would have a power kink (i was origanally sold on this by a topping from the bottom chengyao fic), but i could also imagine him enjoying some pampering in sex. the phrase 'princess treatment' comes to mind (although i think that phrase might be a spa thing).

and this complements the ships

like. imagine lxc servicing him. for once, lxc's isn't having to make choices where the options are Thing That Will Hurt People A and Thing That Will Hurt People B. JGY is getting some well deserved time not thinking about which role he has to play in the social hierarchy. it's all just cozy hours that he and JGY have squirrelled away.

I don't remember the post you mention (so it probably wasn't me who reblogged it lol), but I totally agree with you!

I'm sure that JGY would normally be one great power bottom, even a mean top XD, as he absolutely has a thing for control, and I firmly believe that it comes basically from his need to feel safe: the more in charge of a situation, the safer he is. And he would enjoy that!

But I also believe that if he was to trust his partner enough, he would let himself be taken care of. Or at least it would be something that would do him good, even if he would be hesitant about letting someone else do the work for a change and being shown that he can receive without having to earn it.

And yes, it works well in the context of ships.

LXC would certainly appreciate having the worst dilemma he has to face being where to start pampering JGY xD. He's a kind and gentle person, so doing his best to shower his A-Yao in affection would be like second nature. Making a loved one feel good, what a joy!

There are not a lot of chances for NMJ to show his tender side, and he is also one to appreciate hard work and reward it accordingly, not to mention he is very protective. There's the saber spirit too, so having something else to distract him from that, making him focus on little A-Yao fully would do him well too.

With JC I think it's a situation similar to JGY in some regard, not so much about control, but about feeling fully accepted and reassured, and being a top is another way to achieve that: procuring someone pleasure, making them feel safe with him, lower their guard and trust him, seeing the effect he has on someone and being encouraged. JC is also a protective person who is fiercely devoted to the few he holds dear, caring for JGY is a sense a very personal thing bc they share so much similar baggage. Also he just likes to know he is doing a good job.

Oh, WRH. As you can imagine, this one is my favorite in this scenario bc of how much it would mean coming from him XD. Just imagine you are a smol guy who everybody looks down on and who has to continuously prove himself... and THEN you have the most imposing, powerful man caring for you, servicing you, telling you how perfect you are, how good you are... it'd be easy for him to crash you, and YET here he is, pampering you, validating you, making you feel like the most special person bc how could you not be when you have This Man telling you about how he would burn down the world for you :').

I can see it all being very playful and sweet with NHS. He is known for being a lazy guy who would normally prefer himself getting pampered, but him doing it for JGY would feel like a fun experiment, and I imagine NHS of all ppl being one JGY would trust easily (if we don't include canon ending lol). Maybe not having a lot of faith in how would NHS perform a first, but being pleasantly surprised and it's all giggles and jokes. All part of his evil plan to get JGY to relax and stop worrying about work!

OMG XY. Tbh I can only see these two having some nasty, disrespectful sex XD, JGY trusting the delinquent enough to actually be intimate with him, but XY is too much of a wild card to be fully service top imo, much less a gentle selfless one that would pamper him. It would still be a good session of catharsis tho :P.
