Inktober day 3: Gambutzí
Gambutzí (also known as "gambosí") is a little being without a set apperance found in multiple regions of the Iberian peninsula and is used to play pranks on kids, hunters or newbie fishermen. The most common prank is telling somebody that the gambutzí is an elusive animal that can only be caught during a starry night.
It is said that gumbutzins like to get close to populated areas to observe the people and mimic them, and when they're seen by a human they laugh and make fun of them. Some people say that they also howl and dance under the full moon.

If I say the word "barrufet", nowadays all Catalan speakers will think of these guys:
Tumblr media
The famous Belgian comic book and cartoon Les Schtroumpfs (translated to English as The Smurfs) was translated to Catalan for the first time in 1967, and the translator chose the name would be Els Barrufets.
The translator, Albert Jané, got the name "barrufet" from a being in Catalan mythology. The original barrufets in mythology are tiny wind elves or tiny wind demons.
In Spanish, the translation is Los Pitufos, which also comes from Catalan culture. These comic books were translated to Spanish for the first time in 1969, and the translator who made it is a Catalan man named Miguel Agustí. He decided to base the translation on the Catalan fairytale about a boy called Patufet who was born as small as a coin and who eventually hides from the rain under a lettuce and gets eaten by a cow, but later escapes in a fart.
In fact, Patufet is usually drawn wearing the traditional Catalan clothes that men used to wear in the 1800s, including the iconic traditional Catalan hat (the barretina). My guess is that being tiny and wearing this hat is what made him connect The Smurfs and Patufet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Patufet is one of the most famous children's stories in Catalonia, but I don't think Spanish people know it (unless they watched Les tress bessones/The Triplets maybe?). If there are any Spanish people reading this who have never lived in Catalonia, could you please comment or add in the tags if you knew Patufet's story?

So usually for 6th of January in Spain there's this dessert, that has a king figure inside and a bean. If you find the king you get to wear a paper crown. If you find the bean, you pay for it.
But finally someone made a Republican version :D.
(In Catalan it says "no king no crowns". Instead there's a caganer and a barretina to wear)

My favorite catalan christmas tradition to explain to foreigners is "El tió" (though in my town we call it "la vaga").
El tió is a trunk that has a face, a barretina (typical hat) and a blanket. In my family, kids are told it lives in the forest and comes home during December.
During the first days of December until Christmas it is kept in a comfortable place, and the family feeds it tangerines, chestnuts, and other seasonal foods (some even pet it or sing to it). When Christmas comes and the family is reunited (either 24th during dinner or 25th during lunch) is when we do the most important part of this tradition: we beat the shit out of it, literally.
Kids are given sticks, which have to be heated next to the stove or wetted in water (depending on the family), and then they use this sticks to hit the trunk until it poops out presents. While they do that they have to sing a song (it has many variations, so I'll use the one sung in my family). The song goes like this: /Caga Tió/ /Tió de Nadal/ /caga torrons/ /i pixa vi blanc/ which translates to: /Shit trunk/ /Christmas trunk/ /shit torrons (traditional sweets)/ /and pee white wine/.
When the trunk has pooped out all of the presents it gives you a tangerine. Then it is left outside so it can return to the wild with the other tiós, and then it comes home the next year. Though it may seem weird, I've been doing this tradition since I was very young and it's kinda like the norm to do it in school or at home in Catalonia.

so there’s a Catalan tradition (and this is real, people) in which people, specially children, gather around a log at Christmas Eve and hit it with sticks while singing songs, until it delivers nougat, candy and small presents.
This log (called Tió) is often covered in a blanket, has a face painted and sports the traditional red and black hat (barretina).
Tumblr media
Now, can you guess which mdzs character would just LOVE a tradition in which you BEAT UP SOMETHING WITH A STICK AND THEN IT GIVES YOU CANDY???

Ruixiong Saves Christmas (Final)
Tumblr media
"Did we miss anyone, Captain?"
Tumblr media
"I don't think so. If there were any, I'm certain we'll get a reminder somehow. And the world is enormous. We cannot realistically gift everyone, no matter what they say about this Santa Claus."
Tumblr media
"Did... I make a good Santa?"
Tumblr media
"Oh, Ruixiong. I don't know anything about Santa Claus. But I can certainly say you brought cheer in your own terms. I'm certain the Buddha would be happy to know someone has taken his doctrine and made it his own."
Tumblr media
"'The greatest gift is the act of giving itself'."
Tumblr media
"You got it. I am very proud of you, Ruixiong. Now let's go home and-
Tumblr media
"......Guy?"
Tumblr media
Guy stands before Captain Frascaona and Ruixiong with a little log in his arms, the log given a little painted face and hand-sewn barretina. Given the way the face was painted, it was clearly crafted by Guy himself. "I'm sorry I destroyed the Tio de Nadal then vanished without an explanation, Captain. Merry Christmas."
Tumblr media
Neither Frascona nor Ruixiong, however, cared for the little handcrafted Caga Tio... because the first things they noticed were the bruises on Guy's face and neck. And the stark snowy white of his once deep red hair. "Oh, my God, Guy!!"
Tumblr media
"Guy!! What happened to you?! What happened to your hair! Why did you- ... this isn't powder!! What's going on?!"
Tumblr media
"I... just had a little accident. It’s just some stress. Here. This is my Christmas gift to you. Thank you for being kind to me. I'll remember this all eternity."
Tumblr media
"Guy!! Why are you talking like that?! Please! I just wanted us to have a good holiday! You're my sworn brother and we love you! I love you! And no matter how much we fight or argue or whatever stupid shit we go through, no matter the jokes and insults we fling at each other and how much it hurt, I want you to know you’re my forever brother and I still stand by the oath we all swore under the Peach Tree! I won’t ever abandon you! Please don’t forget that!"
Tumblr media
Guy was left speechless. ".........................."
Tumblr media
"...........Guy."
Tumblr media
"I'm sorry, Captain, but I cannot return home yet. I need some time to myself. Send my apologies to my brother. I'm certain he wants to keep that stress-free holiday like he always wanted."
Tumblr media
"............................"
Tumblr media
"Guy......" The Captain moves in not just to embrace Guy closely, but also to plant a familial kiss on the temple of his forehead. The upper left corner, whole, unhurt. "There is nothing to apologize for. All I ever ask from you...."
Tumblr media
".................."
Tumblr media
".....Is.... please. Please.... when you are ready.... come home."
Tumblr media
"....Goodbye, Captain. Goodbye, Sworn Brother. Merry Christmas. And Happy Hanakuh." Without another word, Guy departs.
