LOOK I finished all 3 long ass Banner Saga games in like 4 days, the story SLAPS & there are so few fics. This author gave EXACTLY what I wanted several times but this is my fav. Its such a sweet and wonderful epilogue. Game spoilers in the tags if you want some context.

This series is not all domestic stuff, but again I recommend the entire thing. GREAT disaster domestic family life. Everyone is some flavor of neurodivergent or disabled in this house but they all CARE so much and it SO GOOD. The Zadr is also delightful and goes through a lot of development. Fantastic read.

Tales from the Irken empire (and also some other planets) by @myrskytuuli - Tallest Miyuki, Tallests Red and Purple, Zim and Dib, Prof Membrane, Lard Nar, In Progress

Not all pre-canon but again I highly recommend this whole series. I love how this author writes the Irken empire. It feels very alive and takes things from our world while making them fit in this one. I also highly recommend their other IZ fic for similar reasons, though it is Zadr and explicit. Excellent stuff.

Ash of Gods - a negative and positive list

Please, read this alongside the "what to expect" post.

I wanted to write a small review of negative and positive for this game. For more details, again click on what to expect!

This post has full on spoilers under cut. This means that I divided the negative/positive in without spoilers (which you can read here) and with spoilers (under cut). In the "what to expect" post there are no spoilers

POSITIVES (no spoilers)

I have seen a lot of people comparing this game to Banner Saga - and it is true, the gameplay is almost identical and there is some similar feelings, but I still preferred this story. The characters feels much more fleshed out, and you can chat with them in the camp

The story was interesting enough for me that I played this game twice. Piercing stuff together the second time was actually enjoyable and deleted the frustration of a first playthrough where I was confused. I liked it, I liked the world building

I enjoyed the loyalty system, mainly because for certain characters it gave me extra dialogues if I had high loyalty

In general the gameplay was fun, I liked choosing different routes and I did get slightly different outcomes/events happening based on what I was choosing

Lo Pheng

NEGATIVES (no spoilers)

The game talks about horrible things happening (r*apes, mutilations, torture)... sometimes a bit too much. It feels almost edgy for edgy sake

At the end the characters are kinda... left there. You do not find out what happens to each one of your companions, which was very disappointing to me. Also not all characters are carried through the game in equal measure (ex. Flitt has some dialogues at the beginning and he was so interesting - but that was it)

Sexism. The female characters often talk about sex. Some of them used to be slaves/prostitutes but many of the comments still feel sexist.

There is one horrible racist character - like, when I saw him I was shocked (more under spoilers if you want)

It looks like the story is fumbled... very messy. And I do not mean in a "puzzle it together!" way, but in a "uhh this character actually gives you contraddicting information that makes no sense" and "I played half the game thinking a couple of characters were the same person and missing on other characters because of the multitude of names". Still, if you want I wrote up a whole summary of the story, approved by the developers and with extra information from the developers.

With spoilers:

NEGATIVES (no spoilers)

Sexism. For example, Gleda is supposed to be this amazing fighter, but we actually have a whole dialogue where the father tells her that she is great but she should take care of this hurt woman and abandoned child - even if you have a healer monk in your party, which makes no sense. Other things related to sexism is the fact that the main chosen ones are all women but you still play as all male characters (You play as Thorn, Hopper and Lo Pheng). Lo Pheng makes sense given that Reet has a lot of information and the player needs someone who knows nothing to be able to explore the story, but there is no sense for us to play as Thorn over Gleda.

Racism: characters of colour come from different areas so they are not common in the main map areas you visit AND YET the one horrible evil cannibal is the one black man. It was almost a caricature. Very bad,

Comics Read-Through: Romeo (1)

So I immediately fell in love with Romeo's appearance in Astonishing Ice-Man #1 (2023) and decided I'd better check out his entire list of appearances, which thankfully is very small.

Spoiler alert: This post ends on a depressing note.

We're going to be jumping around a lot.

The first issue is a X-Men run, and coincidentally, I've been listening to Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men for the past few days. I've only listened to the first 9 episodes, but I think I won't be lost too much. I definitely recommend giving it a listen if you're curious about the X-Men comics!

All-New X-Men (2016) #13

I was actually surprised to see Bobby's sexuality at the forefront of this issue. He's gay and out now. He came out in April 2015's issue, so as you can guess from the title, not long before this one.

The art is very pretty, quite colorful and easy on the eyes. Very interestingly, Bobby says his idea of a gay culture is very outdated (and actually offensive according to the Internet). After all, he IS a younger version of him from the first issues, and not older current-day Iceman. Which is sad when you think about it, because any meaningful connexion Bobby might make in this time will be rendered useless when he comes back to his time, in the past.

Does that come from Top Gun? Hahaha, I should really finish that movie. I think I still have an hour left or something...

So Bobby finally lets himself go, and their hands touch... and Bobby cries and becomes Iceman right in the middle of the bar. He's ashamed and leaves and barges on... Romeo, naturally. They proceed to flirt, and are interrupted by a beautiful creature.

Really great art!

This is actually a friend of Romeo's, who calms him down, and then Romeo's fellow Inhumans arrive. Later, Romeo explains that he's an empath and can manipulate emotions. So this is basically Mantis. Okay! I'm into that, as a concept, because it can lead to great stories (see: Buffy S6). Bobby feels awkward about that, but...

I squeed. They're adorable!

That's how the issue ends, with the last sentence promising "Next: More Horror for Cyclops" which sounds like a sadistic fanfic writer. Hell yeah. But we won't be reading that, because...

2. Spider-Woman (2016) #10

Spider-Woman! We're reading other Spider-people comics before even meeting our first alternate one. Well, I guess technically we met Peter's clone? Maybe? I don't know much about Ben Reilly, but given we just finished (re)reading the first Clone Saga...

Oh, and did I say this issue is in the middle of Civil War II? Which is ridiculous because I've only read Civil War I.

No matter! The art style is pretty different, but I oddly like it.

Jess is on a mission to basically confirm Ulysses's visions, because she doesn't trust them. Romeo appears to take care of a new, old lady Inhuman who doesn't control her newfound powers very well. I have to mention that he's pretty ugly in this issue.

It ends with national news that Clint Barton (Hawkeye) just killed Bruce Banner (Hulk), and Jess is pretty pissed at her girlfriend, Captain Marvel (they're very lesbiany in this issue and Jess acknowledges it, I wonder if it went farther than this).

Let's shift back to...

3. All-New X-Men (2016) #17

Sooo... Bobby and Romeo are boyfriends, and the Inhumans and X-Men are at war with each other. Oops.

The issue begins with their 4th date, and Bobby slaps himself, thinking he should have kissed Romeo. And I'm like. What. exactly. have you been doing those past dates. if you haven't even kissed?!

But the concept of dates is very alien to me, we were actually talking about that with my boyfriend this week-end. I considered us boyfriend our very first date, where he had the option to go back home and chose to actually follow me home. I was like, "okay, we're boyfriends then" and we definitely kissed, I'll tell ya. But in *his* head, we only became boyfriends weeks later when I realized he was missing me while I was away. What a goof. I love him.

So 4 dates without even kissing? Gay kids? This is completely absurd but okay. Gotta milk that teenage angst.

The whole team meanwhile has been waiting in Bobby's room to tell him that, uh, things were going to get complicated for him and his boyfriend.

Then we get a flashback to their first date! They held hands, how wonderful.

And in the present, Bobby takes part in the attack on New Attilan (Romeo's home). Date #2 recollection! They play Laser Tag and Romeo argues those things are a relic of the past, but at least in my country, they're still very popular so what gives?

Date #3! They splashed in a Water Park!

Bobby finds Romeo in a safe room with non-combattants, which I find sad because I'm sure Romeo's skills have battle applications... but reassuring other people is probably important as well.

Well. I guess that's a way to make it important!

Together, they leave the place because love is more important than a silly battle with dubious motivations.

It's only reading the comments on a certain website that I understand that Romeo's called like that because... it's a Romeo and Juliet story. Duh.

4. All-New X-Men (2016) #19

I assume the issue in-between shows what happens aside from them. This is all definitely slower pacing than what I'm used to, not that I'm complaining.

I thought it would be a grand war final issue, but the blurb says the war has ended. Oh. Uh. Okay. You know what? Let's skim through #18.

It... doesn't help much, though. There's parallel series where the crux happens. Oh well. I sure wouldn't be satisfied if I was only reading one magazine. At least, if you're wondering, Bobby went back to help his team.

So, #19!

Who are you and what did you do to Romeo?!

So Hank sends the OG 5 to their past... but they discover that their originals never left. So the OG5 who were transported to the future will stay in the future (so, the present). Okay, that's a good conclusion!

5. Iceman (2017) #1

Tuuuuuurns out... This comic series features TWO Icemen: current Iceman, and displaced Iceman. Huh! I didn't see that coming.

We get a nice Romeo cameo, and Current!Bobby is called because his father is in the hospital. He didn't come out to his family, that sucks.

His family sucks, by the way, dear Lord.

Intriguing series, not sure I'll ever read it though.

So... that's it. Romeo pretty much doesn't appear anymore between 2017 and 2021.

So here I was, thinking it was intriguing, that story about the displaced X-Men. I had to find out what happened to Displaced!Bobby!

Turns out he does have a storyline with his companions in X-Men Blue and it's more or less... harrowing.

What's in red brackets is what happens in All-New X-Men (2016) #19. After that, it's X-Men Blue. Dear Lord. That's a nasty retcon.

So I assume that the next part of the Bobby/Romeo storyline is with Current!Bobby then. Oof. We'll see that in the next post!

It’s a bit of a shame that we never get to see any female Varl. The Banner Saga impresses with its nuanced characters overall and with several really cool women in particular. In a twist the main antagonist of the game is revealed to be female and out for revenge after the murder of her child. One of the greatest heroes of the Varl is revealed to have attacked the Dredge leader known as Bellower while she was giving birth. Yrsa is treacherous and if the player tries to trust her he or she will be punished for it…Īs the player progresses through the story it becomes clear that the Dredge are not the mindless killing machines that they’ve been made out to be. Lubin is portrayed as a spoiled child and it’s clear that Yrsa might very well be the one telling him what to do. She has seen the future and shows Rook what must be done to defeat the Dredge.įinally there’s Yrsa, a witch and right hand of prince Ludin. Halfway through the game the group is joined by Juno one of the most powerful seers in this world. She reasons that realizing this is perhaps what truly makes her a strong woman. However Oddleif declines stating that in this world more people will join their cause if the group is led by a man. Rook would actually prefer Oddleif to lead the caravan and tells her this on more than one occasion. Oddleif and the player have several conversations during the course of the game. She inspires other women in Rooks caravan and teaches them to become expert archers like herself. The chieftain of Skogr married her to bask in her father’s fame, yet she quickly ends up being the person really in charge of the place from behind the scenes. She hints that she was given a mans name because her father a well-known warrior really wanted a son. Oddleif is perhaps the most interesting character in the entire game. It is an interesting choice by the designers and one that I have a hard time faulting the game for. If the player goes against her wishes he or she will lose out on an achievement called “Innocent”. However Alette is very adamant that she doesn’t want to kill people. As such her portrayal is very much based on how the player wants her to evolve as a character. The player can choose to have Rook be an overprotective father or he/she can choose to let Alette grow and become a formidable warrior who in the end saves the day. Their relationship is something the player can very much influence by the choices he or she makes. The game centres around Rook and Alette, a father and a daughter. Those women you see in war are only there because the men who protested are now lying beneath a pile of loose stones and soil, feathered with hand-made arrows.” In fact, it is fair to say they were never accepted. The description of the Archer unit (all archers are female) is quite telling: “Women were not accepted for a long time when it came to joining in battle. The world is one that is least as sexist as our own, yet the desperation of the situation forces old prejudices to be challenged. When the Dredge invade, the humans and varl have to band together and flee their villages in search of a way to combat the oncoming horde. In this world humans live alongside horned giants known as Varl and are forced to fight as a mysterious race of stone creatures known as the Dredge attack their homes. The Banner Saga is a story based turn-based tactical game set in a fantasy world very much inspired by Norse mythology. (Note: this analysis contains major plot spoilers) But first a little bit about the game in general… I want to address the way this game portrays women. Bioware veterans and has a wonderful art-style reminicent of classic Disney films, but that’s not why I want to write about this particular game. The one thing that sets this one of the rpg video games apart from similar role playing games is that the best things in the game can be obtained by playing and not paying.Īfter launching this best online RPG games for Android, the game developers later added other features like real-time multiplayer, a town portal, and a fourth world.The Banner Saga was one of the first major Kickstarter successes a few years back.

Other than that, the game is free to play. Its tap-to-move control makes it more like a vintage point-and-click Action RPG game and is better than thumbsticks any day.Įternium action RPG games come with in-app purchases and are all up to the player whether he wants to buy additional stuff or not.

To help the users during the offline period, the one of the top action rpg games lets the user download the content which can help them in offline mode. Eternium, one of the top new rpg games, can be compared to the great classics and is one of the best free games for Android.

But anyway I've been having lots of emotions about Ludin from Banner Saga recently (have you ever played Banner Saga?). He's such a GOOD BOY (eventually!!) and I'm sad that not only does the Banner Saga fandom barely exist but Ludin isn't that popular.

I have a soft spot for characters who have their whole world view upended, realise how naive they were, and work hard to be better people.

honestly i understand the steve stans who didn't like his ending in avengers endgame. many tony and nat stans also did not like to see them dead after all that they passed or even thor or bruce stans for what happened with their characters... but to say that the russos don't know how to write good things since the winter soldier is beyond stupid. it's clear that y'all criticism is not about the possible plot holes in cap's timeline or because they ignored all steve's adaptation to the present and the relationship he began to build with sharon carter but simply because the end of the film didn't follow the expectations of you guys' self-indulgent shit

Slight spoilers for The Banner Saga below the cut.

Given that The Banner Saga is a game where your decisions can result in the permanent deaths of different characters, I was trying hard to read the in-game situations and react intelligently. So when one of the characters, who (allegedly) has the gift of foresight, told me to beware “blue and yellow”, I made that a priority. When I was meeting new characters, I scanned their outfits to see how much blue and yellow they were wearing. Who was Blue and Yellow? What exactly was Blue and Yellow going to do to me? What can I do to protect everyone from the threat of Blue and Yellow? Oh my gosh, Rugga’s bodyguard who barely ever speaks and who looks like a strange old man is wearing blue and yellow (and brown and gray and more brown). Is he the one?

I did not forget what seemed to me to be a very helpful warning from a game with many strategic pitfalls. Whatever Blue and Yellow was going to do, I was going to be on top of it.

And then we got to centaur country and I met Canary and that whole Blue and Yellow warning didn’t even enter my brain because I was too busy thinking Oooh cool horsey warrior lady! I hope she joins my group!!!!

In the end, me and Blue and Yellow got along together just fine.
