Relationship(s): Ozai/Ursa, Ozai & his family, Ozai & his issues
Summary: This fic is about two things:
1) Treating Ozai as an actual character with motivations beyond simply Being Evil For The Sake Of Evilness, & dealing with his relationship with his family.
2) Making him suffer.
OR:
Ozai makes a deal with a spirit. It does not go well for him.
Chapter 1: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

“What is your wish, Prince Ozai?”
Ozai glared at the spirit – a monstrous snake (not a weaselsnake, or a badgersnake, or a catsnake – just a snake). He had not introduced himself and had deliberately left anything marking him as royalty behind for this little excursion. The nondescript clothing and concealing cloak he wore were of exemplary quality of course (he would not lower himself to dress like a peasant even for the sake of a disguise), but nothing that couldn't conceivably be worn by any member of the upper nobility. And it had come to its conclusion remarkably quickly…
He shook himself (mentally at least – he wasn't about to show that he was rattled in any way). Spirits had knowledge and abilities far beyond mortal comprehension. That was precisely why he was here.
He drew himself to his full height. “I wish for my father to see my worth.”

Personality Analysis of: Mushu (Disney’s Mulan)
Sorting Hat Chats: BADGER-SNAKE (POWER BEHIND THRONE)
I do think Mushu is clearly a loyalist in the sorting hat chats system (not 100% sure if he’s Snake or Badger though). After reading a great post about “badger snakes and the red-stained ledger” by @air-in-words, I like the idea of sorting Mushu from Disney’s Mulan as a Badger-Snake. He definitely has Harold Hill/Dewey Finn vibes. Mushu is group-oriented (trying to get reinstated as a family guardian), but he weirdly supports/protects the group through deception/finesse.
His “red-stained ledger” would probably be getting one of the family members he was protecting decapitated (which got him demoted to gong-ringer), and then impersonates someone he’s not (the Great Dragon Spirit) to regain his status/role within the group (this behaviour is sort of a self-serving expression of the Hufflepuff Primary). However he clearly bonds with his little group (Crikee, Mulan, Khan), and ends up doing a lot of good for his family and China, in the end.
MBTI: ENTP
Ne is very obvious in his quick-thinking, hyper-verbal style. Ti before Fe because he’s definitely more strategic and led by self-interest (Ti), before connecting it to his group (Fe). You don’t get the sense Mushu has grandiose values, he has “people” (which is why he is a loyalist house). ENTP’s Inferior Sensation in my experience tends to be represented in media as some sort of physical/sensory limitation/helplessness compensated for by a outsized persona/intellect (Tyrion Lannister, Iron Man, Varrick, Edward Elric). In Mushu’s case, he’s constantly being ridiculed for being little, and powerless, and a snake, so he always finds clever ways to appear large/powerful/authoritative (a very small man can cast a very large shadow, as Varys once told Tyrion).
Enneagram Analysis
Despite being commonly typed as a 7, Mushu from Mulan (1998) is a 6w7 sp. He isn't a free spirited 7 looking for fun and adventure--he wants to be reinstated as a guardian of the family (WAY more of 6 motivation) by proving he can watch over Mulan and keep her safe. I'll tell you this--you're not going to see a lot of enneagram 7's depicted as the jittery, protective character who is trying to talk the hero out of doing things, moaning "We're doomed!". Grumbling to yourself that no one is taking your fears seriously, while still acting as lookout to protect the idiots who are ignoring you, is a fat 6 mood.
He is so 6 in how he is constantly anticipating threats and predicting what they need to worry about next, to keep Mulan safe. He wakes her up each morning and runs her through all the things she needs to focus on and think about to face the day ahead. He's always trying to protect his people by staying ahead of things (classic 6 strategy).
Think of how on top of danger he is when Shan Yu's falcon tries to raise alarm, and Mushu immediately breathes fire and turns him into Mongolian barbecue--6's are amazing at detecting threats, because they're constantly scanning their environments. I know 7's are usually comic relief, but self pres 6's are sneakily the funniest enneagram subtype, IMO. They make for great comical sidekicks!

Nah, I'm good with answering as long as certain Lions in my life don't see this. Just keep this between you, me, and the internet, okay?
I suppose a lot of this answer is dependent on your definition of manipulation. Trolling, for example, is something I've done a number of times with my friends, and it boils down to lying and manipulating them into reacting one way before revealing the truth. The tension and release gets some grumbles at the reveal but also usually a lot of laughter.
Games are another place where my Snake comes out in full force. Mind you, I'd never cheat in a PvP game (PvE, maybe), but card or lying games are playtime for my manipulation skills. It's especially fun when you can fool people into thinking you're an awful liar early in the game and swing things around to take the prize in the end. It's all in good fun, and I usually earn smiles in the end.
Then, you have the times I babysat one of the kids in my neighborhood. After dinner, he was allowed to play video games, so I usually sat and watched him run around, trying to figure out puzzles so he could progress the story. If he started getting really frustrated, I'd figure out the puzzle myself, or I'd secretly look up the answers online. Then, I'd drop subtle hints or ask leading questions until he figured it out.
I also do something similar with one of my friends. We watch the same anime, and it has an element of mystery to it that she likes to theorize about. What she doesn't know, is that I've read ahead in the manga, so when I see her getting caught by red herrings, I'll gently nudge her back on track. She is solving things with her own ability, all I do is drop a leading question here and there to get her thinking in the right direction. I'm not sure she'd see it that way if she knew, but she's so happy when her theories prove to be right that I doubt I'll stop doing it anytime soon.
I'm sure I have more stories that I'm forgetting... I'll update later if I think of a good one.

Hi, what are your thoughts on a hufflepuff/ horned serpent with a chow chow as a patronus?
i generally think the domesticated animal patronuses like dogs and cats match to people who don’t need to rely on a bigger protector, but i think that with chow chows (which are huge and sort of have a reputation for being one of the more … irritable … breeds) could go the other way, and be matched to somebody who does need a bigger protector
i think they’d make for a pretty fierce patronus to go with hufflepuff :)
