I have a lot of fondness for clunky Hallmark Christmas romance movies with rock bottom production values, vaguely established and extremely contrived plots, dodgy dialgoue, often questionable line readings, and child actors playing a kid who seems either three years younger or older than themselves. Hallmark have not undermined themselves with glib, self aware irony or attempted to "elevate" the delightful low artform that they excel in. Refreshing, honestly.

#netflix could never #they are incapable of that level of earnest storytelling #for this specific kind of story at least #because they think they're better than it #hallmark knows that none of us are too good for a movie about an autistic marine biologist #who thinks her best friend's brother ghosted her after they hit it off at the friend/sister's wedding #and *tells him* that repeatedly to his face instead of not addressing it #and he's like 'I definitely replied ot your email! you ghosted me! but let's let bygones be bygones. It's The Holidays' for the whole movie #and the resolution is that it got saved in his drafts #amazing #what other studios are delivering this level of banal miscommunication #what other movies have b-plots about learning how to be good at talking to interns as well as seals? #where little kids read poems they wrote at a christmas parties that sound *exactly* like a little kid wrote them? #and not in the 'kids who haven't internalised cliche yet can write some beautiful lines' way #mystic christmas: would recommend to a friend #there are no supernatural elements btw #that's the name of the town #which literally could have been named anything because it doesn't seem to be important to the plot at all #and no one makes any plays on 'mystic' that relate to its literal meaning

Why is it that I'm the one who is misunderstanding instead of the other person not expressing themselves well enough? “Old Lady say something Tan-Gen-De .” They carefully speaks it. “And Ey-Di-Ey.” Timmy push up. “Huh. That makes sense, actually.” His face do something weird.   “What's Eh-Di-Ey?” They want to know. They want to capture all the little words, like bags in a jar they can recognise for the next time. “ADA is the Americans with Disabilities Act.” They blink. “It means they need to help people who need special help. Or they get in trouble with the law. So I told her that you needs help with reading and writing.”  Cass knows law. It's people with hammers and big white wigs. They think about Hammer-Man gives Old Lady a pencil and tell her to write for Cass.  It's a funny picture. “What's tan-gen-de ?” They ask. Timmy falls to the ground. “Fuck.” They look. He isn't injured. Just arm over his eyes. “Okay, we need to call Steph. I'm NOT giving ‘Queer Theory 101’ without her.”

So. Gender is like “boy” and “girl”, but not only. And when baby is born the doctor looks at private parts and decides.  “Girls” like pink and wear dresses and play dolls. “Boys” like blue and wear pants and play cars. But girls can also wear pants and like blue and play car, and boys can wear dresses and like pink and play with dolls and it's okay!   (Then why have this?.) Sometimes baby grow up and tell parents doctors were wrong. That doctor said they are girl, but actually they are boy. Or doctor said they are boy but they actually girl.   And that's “transgender”. Someone that doctors were wrong as a baby, and had to fix it.   (Or something like that.)

I frequently find myself in situations where I have to take what I consider an ordinary thing to say and translate it into phrasing that other people require me to use in order for them to cooperate with me.

I know I write things with harsh or dramatic phrasing on here but that's typically for entertainment value or because I'm venting in a personal space. In a work setting I put a lot of effort into being professional and yet huge extra steps are required on top of that to communicate with a lot of people.

#especially insane when the other party caused a problem yet all reaponsibility to fix it is on me not them #all i need to know is what they did so i can fix it correctly and not make it worse #and they will NOT tell me a damn thing unless i speak in a way that manages to avoid implying they were ever incorrect #and theyre not even in trouble they just have such an intense reaction to any implication of perfection that they cant cope #and so many people are like this and all empathise with the behavior that it becomes normal to speak vague and indirectly #THEN MORE MISCOMMUNICATION HAPPENS BECAUSE NO ONE IS LITERAL AND THIS SHIT ENTERS A FEEDBACK LOOP #this is about having a corporate job when im probably autistic not about identifying with crypto fash freaks btw #anyway often makes me wonder how i should ask questions or if i should even bother seeking input vs working alone

On the topic of genres- does anyone else think it would be a genius idea to have a way to search by tropes?

Like it would make life so much easier to figure out what to watch- if I could just search up “enemies to lovers” or like opt out of any miscommunication tropes.
