i think the fundamental problem i have with the way people talk about neurotypical people is that a lot of it seems to attempt to derive what neurotypical people are like based on what (the post author thinks) societal expectations for them are, which is like using gender roles to figure out what men/women are really like

Brennan, I swear to god I have forgiven you and I am not mad (just disappointed), but it will never cease to amaze me that in a country as diverse and multicultural as America, seemingly many Americans just Have A Guess when they encounter a name they haven't heard said out loud, using the pronounciation that would make sense with English phonetic conventions no matter what culture the name in question comes from.

There's such a stark divide in my mind between things that I like a lot, nay am A Fan of, and things whose fandoms I am in. There are things I like so much that I actively avoid talking about online because I don't want to interact with the fandom. Not because of any particular unpleasant thing they're known for or whatever, I just don't want to give the impression that I'm prepared to Be Fannish about this thing I'm a big fan of and I'd rather just enjoy it privately.

Discussion of incest cw

Apparently some anime has made a popular yaoi ship canonically cousins and I'm just like... okay. So? Are you familiar with infamous incest shipper Jane Austen? Maybe this is the "from a small island nation" jumping out again, but this doesn't need to be an obstacle on par with them being siblings a la Luke and Leia.

But like, incest shipping discourse is never going to stop being fucking bizarre to me. The peak was when I saw some very well meaning people saying extremely earnestly that it was incestuous to ship David Marcus/Saavik on the basis that Saavik is fanonically Spock's adopted daughter and David is Kirk's estranged son who only met him as an adult. The leaps you have to go through to arrive at this conclusion...

Like.... do you think adults who did not grow up together or even know each other as children whose parents get married shouldn't be allowed to date? Do you think that would be functionally equivalent to sexual abuse at the hands of a family member? Do you think that is not an incredibly trivialising thing to say to survivors of incest? Are you aware that the problem with incest is that it is almost always a form of sexual abuse when it happens in real life and not that it's just Forbidden for nebulously defined reasons of ickiness?

Also, the "Saavik is Spock's adopted daughter" thing comes from the novels, and Spock also married Saavik in the novels, so I feel if you're going to play the "which makes David/Saavik incest" card, this is something you may have to reckon with.

Got Very Cold and finished knitting a sock I've had on the needles since the start of January because I didn't do laundry and don't have any other clean socks. Normal problems with normal solutions here at the Art obstinatecondolement household.

#I was knitting a replacement for a sock that got felted in the wash #it was really bumming me out having only half a wearable pair of them #so I got a rush of blood to the head on NYE and decided to just make another one #because I had lots of the yarn left #but yeah: alpaca! #30% warmer than wool and very soft #it's usually too warm for me but for cold nights it is fabulous

I feel bad complaining when I have a roof over my head and don't have to worry about access to electricity, heating, running water and food, but I am so fucking sick of having my disability payment adjusted to account for an additional income stream I haven't had for almost nine months.

My sister's dog is getting spayed tomorrow and I am a bit wibbly wobby thinking about it because she Is Not brave about going to the vet and we have to drop her off a few hours before the surgery, so we can't go in to reassure her while she's going under general. She also has an incredibly high pain threshhold, so I'm worried about her pulling at her stitches when she's out, cone or no cone.
