Mentorship
Setting: Shinra Headquarters, Midgar
POV: 1st person (Mithra)
Summary: Angeal takes Mithra on as his second apprentice alongside Zack, and he introduces her to Genesis and Sephiroth.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I stood outside of the training room waiting for Zack to show up. A week had passed since I met him, and I was eager to meet his mentor, Angeal. We had been hanging out a lot as well, and he quickly became a good friend. Both of us had seemingly boundless energy and friendly personalities. We talked about our childhoods, or at least his childhood and whatever I had experienced before:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So Mithra, where are you from?”
“I’m not exactly sure, but my earliest memory is waking up in the slums. I don’t know how I got there. What about you?”
“Me? I’m from Gongaga.” I couldn’t help but laugh at how funny it sounded.
“Hey, what’s so funny? Don’t you know about Gongaga?”
“I didn’t know there were so many other places out there. The slums were the only world I knew for so long.”
“Gongaga’s pretty far from here,” Zack said. “There’s a broken reactor nearby, but it’s a pretty sweet place. You’ve gotta watch out for the frogs though. Some of them can turn you into one if you’re not careful. I know that from experience.”
“You got turned into a frog once?” I laughed.
“Several times, actually. My dad got really good at reversing the transformation,” he said, his face blushing slightly. I giggled, finally feeling that I’d found someone I could really relate to. Even though he wasn’t a former slum-dwelling thief, I had never met someone as cheerful and open-minded as him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I smiled at the memory before hearing footsteps walking down the hallway. I turned my head towards them, and low and behold, there he was. Zack grinned at me as he stopped in front of me.
“Angeal’s not here yet. You wanna go in and spar?” I nodded eagerly. I had been practicing for hours every day, and my skills have been improving quite significantly. I had also spoken with the Director about scouting missions, and he told me that the three Firsts and he would test me on my skills in the coming weeks.
Zack and I entered the training room, which was bare of any furniture. We stood opposite of each other, drawing our weapons. Aside from my standard issued Shinra short sword, I had a long bow and a quiver of arrows. If I was gonna be a scout, I might as well learn ranged combat.
Zack made the first move, performing an overhead slash, which I shielded easily. I took advantage of his position and jabbed him in the stomach with my elbow, causing him to stagger backwards. We continued at it for a few minutes before Zack crumpled to the floor, panting heavily.
“Damnit Mithra, I still have training with Angeal! You’re wearing me out!” I smirked, my practice was definitely paying off.
Just after that, another presence entered the room. I turned my head to see a tall, muscular man. He almost looked like he was related to Zack, with black chin-length hair, a small beard, and the signature SOLDIER eyes. He was wearing a black SOLDIER uniform and holding a short sword identical to mine and Zack’s. The most noticeable thing about him, however, was the giant broadsword he had strapped to his back. He looked at Zack, smirking.
“I see the newcomer has overwhelmed you, puppy,” he chuckled. Zack rolled his eyes and picked himself up off the floor.
“Shut up, Angeal,” he retorted before turning to me. “Mithra, this is Angeal Hewley, my mentor.” Angeal held out his hand, and I shook it.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss Valkyris. Zack’s told me about you, and you seem very promising in your abilities as a SOLDIER.”
“Please, just call me Mithra. It’s a pleasure to meet you as well, Commander Hewley,” I said nervously, struggling to make eye contact.
“If you don’t need formalities, then neither do I. Angeal is fine.” He let go of my hand. “You’re a former thief, aren’t you?”
I gulped. What was he gonna think of me now? I nodded in shame; I knew that my past would haunt me forever. Luckily Angeal noticed, and he did nothing that would embarrass me further.
“I’m glad that you’ve decided to join SOLDIER, as we are always looking for new recruits that can be sent on stealth missions.” He drew his sword just as Zack had done earlier. “Give me a few hits.”
I struck his sword several times, but on one, he managed to push my blade away with a fair amount of force. However, I took the opportunity to roll underneath him and get behind him, remaining directly behind him so he couldn’t swing at me. Taking care not to get cut on his giant sword, I swung the sword in front of his neck, landing it inches away from his skin. His eyes widened, thoroughly impressed with my performance.
I lowered my sword, and he turned around. I bowed respectfully, hoping that I didn’t do anything wrong. He cleared his throat, and I looked up at him.
“That was very impressive. You excel at being unpredictable and disarming your opponent. I’m sure the Director will be pleased to know this. I also see that you are an archer as well.” He gestured to my bow.
“I’m learning, but yes, I also like to use some ranged weapons.” I replied. Angeal hummed to himself in satisfaction.
“Good. Adaptability is essential in the military.” He turned to Zack. “I’m gonna go and talk to Lazard about assigning scout missions to Mithra. We shouldn’t take long, and then I’ll train you afterwards.”
“I can’t complain about a training delay,” Zack said before doing squats. Angeal motioned for the two of us to follow him, and he led us out of the training room and to Director Lazard’s office. Zack smiled at me encouragingly the whole way.
We reached the Director’s office, and I instantly spotted two SOLDIERs standing in front of the desk, their backs facing us. One of them had rusty red hair and a reddish coat on, and the other had silver hair that went past their waist and a black leather coat. I was instantly drawn to the silver-haired one; wasn’t I the only female SOLDIER? Whoever they were, they looked absolutely beautiful, and I could not take my eyes off of them. Angeal cleared his throat.
“Director Lazard, I’d like to talk to you about Mithra Valkyris.” The two SOLDIERs turned around, and to my embarrassment, I saw that the silver-haired figure was a man. I did my best to hide the flush that came over my face. I thought he was a woman, a very tall one at that, and a very attractive one. Zack noticed my nervousness and squeezed my hand in support.
“Angeal, did you really have to interrupt us?” The auburn man asked in annoyance. “We were talking about something important. Couldn’t you have waited a few minutes?” Angeal rolled his eyes.
“My bad, Genesis.” Lazard turned his attention towards the black-haired First, and he glanced at me as well.
“Has she gotten a chance to demonstrate her skills to you, Commander Hewley?”
“Yes, and she’s very promising. She managed to sneak under me after I blocked her, and if she wanted to she could’ve cut my throat.” Genesis scoffed.
“Not as aware as you think you are, huh Angeal?” He laughed at himself, and Angeal rolled his eyes again. I wondered if he got headaches from doing that so much.
“Very good,” said Lazard. “Are you recommending her for scout?”
“Yes,” replied Angeal, confidently, “she’ll do well on stealth missions.” Lazard smiled.
“Well then, Mithra, congratulations. You now have the title of Agent. I trust that you’ll do well in your upcoming missions.” He turned to his computer to type out his latest report. Angeal turned around to leave the Director’s office, and Zack and I followed him. Genesis and the silver-haired SOLDIER caught up with us.
“Angeal, how could you not introduce us to your second pupil?” Genesis asked, looking at me. I held out my hand.
“I’m Mithra Valkyris,” I said. Genesis smiled at my initiative, taking my hand and kissing the top of it.
“I’ve heard about you, Mithra Valkyris. The first female SOLDIER. Commander Genesis Rhapsodos, at your service.” I smiled at his charisma. Genesis let go of my hand before staring at the third SOLDIER.
“Sephiroth, be a gentleman and greet the lady!” I looked at him and tried my hardest not to blush. I had crushed on him earlier because I thought he was a woman!
“I’m Sephiroth, General of SOLDIER,” he said quickly, shaking my hand. His eyes drilled into me as if he was searching for my true emotions. I felt intimidated by him, maybe because his pupils looked weird.
“I’m Mithra,” I squeaked. I could see the faintest hint of a smile form on Sephiroth’s lips.
“I’m sure we’ll become well-acquainted if you’ll be training under Angeal,” Sephiroth said calmly.
“I don’t know how you’ll be able to train two rambunctious Thirds, Angeal,” Genesis snorted. “The puppy already stresses you out enough.”
“I’ll try not to be too much trouble for him,” I retorted. “Unless you would like to mentor me, Genesis.” Genesis held his hands up.
“I have a tendency to set things on fire, so maybe I could help you with magic,” he replied. I laughed in response.
“And I don’t think you’d be able to keep up with me,” Sephiroth added. Genesis scoffed.
“Yes, no one can beat Shinra’s poster boy.” He rolled his eyes, and I snickered.
“Anyways, I’m gonna go to the simulator room and do some stealth practice. I can’t get rusty if Lazard expects me to do scouting missions.” I turned to head towards the simulation room when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked over to see Genesis.
“Let us accompany you. We haven’t gotten to see what you can do, and Lazard did say that we’d get to see it as well.” I smiled and nodded, and Genesis and Sephiroth followed me to my destination. Time to prove myself worthy of making Second Class.
1st week (Monday)
“So how do you like the school so far?” mom asked, which led me to take my headphones in order to give her my full attention.
“It’s actually pretty good so far, not gonna lie. The classes are a bit boring though, but I’ve made a few friends who seem pretty cool so far.” I answered, glad that I didn’t have to lie to her like I thought I’d have too in the case that things really weren’t good.
“That’s good. Really good, actually,” she said, taking her eyes off the road for a brief second to flash me a smile. “Do you like it better than homeschool?” she asked, possibly testing me to see if I’d give the “correct” answer I suppose. But what was the “correct” answer? If I said yes, then she’d feel as if all those hours she put into homeschooling had gone to waste. If I said no, then she’d use it as an excuse to try and get me to become homeschooled again.
“Well,” I said, choosing my words thoughtfully as well as carefully, “I think in terms of academics, homeschooling, but I like regular school more in the sense that I’m able to socialize with a more diverse group of people if that makes sense. ” I said, pleased with my answer.
“Of course it does, sweetie,” she said, seemingly pleased as well with my response, as well as giving me another smile which signaled that that was the conclusion to our conversation. You see, I always got the sense that mom was always a bit lonely. When I was around 3, mom and dad had gotten divorced, and while I don’t really know a whole lot about it, I do know that it took a toll on her. When third grade happened, mom thought about moving, but instead decided on just working from home since she still wanted to give me a chance to interact with dad. Although this didn’t seem to do much, considering that dad moved halfway across the country in order to be with his new wife. Anyway, I try not to think about it too much since it is a somewhat depressing topic. We arrived at the school a few moments later at around 7:30, and I went to my locker and finished listening to “All Alone” by fun, probably one of my favorite bands of all-time. As I sat by my locker, I felt a jab in my foot, as if someone kicked it. I looked up, and my eyes were met with Caroline Brooks’. Although I had never actually spoken to her, she kinda stood out whenever she walked into a room. She was gorgeous, with straight blonde hair that just barely extended past her shoulders that complimented her blue mascara-laced eyes perfectly. She had nice long eyelashes, and rosy cheeks, and perfect skin, with not even a single sign of acne.
“Do you mind letting me get to my locker?” she asked, seeming as if she was in the middle of something important because of how fast she was typing on her phone.
“Oh, sorry,” I said nervously, “I didn’t know I was in front of it”
“No you’re fine,” she said, looking back down at her phone, barely looking away from it as she emptied things inside her locker, then finally put it away once she finished.
“Sorry if I acted kind of like a bitch by the way,” she said sheepishly.
“Oh, no, I didn’t think you were... acting that way,” I said, embarrassingly. If I was a white person, I would’ve for sure been blushing.
“You know you can say bitch right?” she said giggling, probably awestruck that I was one of the few kids who didn’t feel the need to say a curse word in nearly every sentence.
“Well yeah, obviously,” I said, nervously laughing, “I just don’t feel the need to curse, y’know? I mean I do, but it’s not something I’m really proud of, I guess.” I answered, realizing I probably sounded like a giant nerd.
“Awww,” She said lovingly, “That’s adorable. You didn’t go to St. Mary’s did you?” She asked eagerly.
“Is that the middle school most of the kids here went too? I heard Malcolm and Marcos mention it and-”
“Oh my gosh! I love Malcolm! he is so funny.” she said, emphasizing the “so” part.
“Yeah, I sat with him at lunch Friday and he seemed like it.” I said wholeheartedly. there was a silence for only about a few seconds, but it felt like hours. I don’t know what about her was so captivating, but she was insanely out-of-this-world pretty. As I stood there, thinking about how, if I could, I would marry her on the spot, a tall white guy with glasses came out from the stairwell doors and called her name. She immediately turned around ad hugged him, Instantly shattering any possible future I thought of possibly having with her. As they continued walking, it was as if I had totally faded from existence, with him being the only thing on her mind, and her on his. When lunchtime rolled around, I still had her on my mind, so I decided to break out of my shell a bit by asking the same guys who I had sat with Friday, minus Andrew, about her.
“Do you guys know Caroline?” I asked, trying my best not to come off as creepy.
“Bro, who doesn’t? Easily the hottest girl in the grade, if not the whole school.” Malcolm said, with the group all agreeing with him and Marcos giving him a cool handshake.
“On God, I’d cum buckets inside of her bro.” Said Marcos, causing laughter from the table, which although was extremely explicit, I do have to admit it was I was laughing as well.
“Why do you ask?” said Malcolm, curiously intrigued.
“No we had a conversation earlier and I thought she was really pretty,” I said, remembering our glorious encounter. “Don't tell her that though” I added, not wanting her to find out.
“Relax,” said Malcolm, chuckling. “What’s said at this table, stays at this table. Right boys?” asked Malcolm addressed to no one in particular, which was met by a few “hell yeah’s” and “Amen brother”.
“Okay good. Anyway, we were talking, and then this big tall white dude came out of nowhere and called her, and it’s like I just didn’t exist anymore.” I said, feeling good that I finally had someone else to talk too about this sort of stuff.
“I fucking hate him,” Alex said, speaking for the first time in what seemed like forever, with Andrew agreeing with him.
“Yeah, fuck that nigga,” Malcolm said, maybe a little too loud, because the people next to us, which was mainly upperclassmen theater girls, turned around and gave him a weird look.
“What? I’m black nigga! I can say it all I want. Nigga, nigga, nigga, nigga” He said, which caused our table to erupt in laughter, all of us enviously admiring Malcolm's ability to say whatever came to his mind and not care about other people’s opinions. As the ladies turned back around, the bell rang, letting us know that lunchtime was over, and for me, this is where the day ended as well.
Vld fixit: Garrison klance
Still writing my fixit, I should probably write more of it more often but i mean content creating all depends on mood and lately I’ve only been in a binge-watching mood. I did finish writing a first draft for garrison klance when they first start out, just slight crushes ya know cuz... young crushes are cute.
***
He was really excited to go to the Garrison. He had always wanted to pilot and the Garrison had the best piloting program in the world, and they had chosen him. He had done all that he could to prepare for the pilot selection program to ensure that he would get in, and although the studying hadn’t always been fun, it had all paid off. He had not only had to prepare for the piloting simulation but also had to make sure his academics were good enough for the garrison. When the Garrison had told him that he had made it, he was ecstatic with joy. His family was really proud of him. His sister Veronica was also at the Garrison and he was excited to be with her there. His hero, Shiro the amazing pilot, was also at the Garrison and though he doubted he would really see him, he was still excited to be in the school where the Takashi Shirogane studied. Veronica had been telling him about the Garrison ever since she had started going for their data analytics program, but now that he made it into the program she began to tell him even more about it so he could get ready. The Garrison wasn’t near his home and required on-site housing, so he and his family couldn’t see her often. He was scared to start living on his own, though he wouldn’t admit it out loud, but knowing Veronica would be there with him made it easier. He made the most of his time with his immediate and extended family before he had to leave for the next school year. He even made his mom teach him how to cook Cuban foods because he knew that he would miss them and he didn’t trust Veronica’s cooking all the time. Plus learning how to cook wouldn’t hurt his chances with any potential romantic interests, because surely the Garrison, who brought in the most talented people of all genders and ethnicities from all around the world, had some cool and attractive people there and there had to be opportunities for romance.
So far, the Garrison has been pretty fun. They got roommates at the Garrison and the first year you get assigned roommates. Veronica had told him about it and had teased him for having to have an assigned roommate the first year. She had enjoyed picking her own roommate, having even had a roommate that was her girlfriend at one point, though they weren’t dating anymore. Lance had been glad to hear that it wouldn’t be impossible to date anyone if he found someone he liked. Lance’s assigned roommate, Hunk, was there for the engineering program. Hunk was nice and caring and they became good friends from the getgo. Hunk also was a great cook and although Lance had learned how to cook basic and Cuban foods before he left, Hunk’s food was unbeatable and Hunk had general culinary expertise. Hunk was also Samoan and he was fluent in Samoan. He and Hunk taught each other their respective languages whenever they hung out and it was super fun to learn about different languages. Hunk was timid though, so Hunk was hesitant to go along with some of his goofy shenanigans because he was afraid of them getting in trouble. Most of them were just harmless fun but Lance couldn’t say that he never broke the rules to have some fun. The piloting and engineering programs were separate but they did have some shared core classes in sciences, maths, and other general school topics as multiple programs shared classes. So although they didn’t have too many classes together, Hunk and Lance were able to study together sometimes, though Hunk’s prowess was in academics so he would be the one helping Lance most of the time.
Lance did also make friends with some people in his piloting classes and other classes he didn’t have with Hunk. The Garrison had a lot of people in each of their programs, so each of their programs were split into groups/classes that they would be in for the duration of the education program. As they progressed through the years, people from different programs would be paired into teams and would train as teams, but for the first few years they mainly just trained in their individual fields and classes. Lance was a social person and had no problem making friends in his piloting group/class. There were some cute people of all genders in their class and he occasionally casually flirted with them, but there was this guy. He had a mullet and although Lance didn’t really think the hairstyle was fashionable, this guy made it work and Lance couldn’t deny to himself that it was attractive (though he would never admit it aloud, especially not to the guy himself). The guy was reserved and didn’t really interact or join any of their study groups, so it took a while to find out his name: Keith. There were plenty of attractive people in his class but what drew Lance to Keith in particular was that he just seemed cool. Keith was really talented at piloting and would often do some maneuvers that were above the average class skill rate and not what they were practicing. Some teachers encouraged his skill and others like Iverson would get mad at him and discipline him. Lance wanted to talk to him, but Keith never talked to anyone unless he was required to for class (and unfortunately he hadn’t gotten paired with him yet) and Lance respected that he didn’t feel comfortable talking to people. But from what little Keith did say and from what Lance saw of him, he seemed to be this cool, aloof, emo talented guy and though he didn’t think Keith deserved it, Lance was kind of attracted to his whole bad boy allure and wanted to learn more about him. Lance often talked about the little things he could about Keith to Hunk, just because he thought Keith was… interesting and cool.
One day, Lance was just walking around after class and going towards one of the cafeterias nearby to get a snack when he saw Shiro a distance away. He was internally fangirling and almost started squealing out loud as well, when he saw Keith besides Shiro, talking to him. Keith couldn’t get any cooler could he? He somehow knew Shiro and was talking to him. Maybe it was because Keith was so talented, even Shiro knew about him.
Another day, Lance was hanging out with Veronica and then had to leave to go to class. He hugged her goodbye and then as he was walking away he heard this guy, Griffin, from his class sneer at him and tell his friends “what a sissy*” and they laughed at him. Veronica was out of earshot at that point or she might have fought them for making fun of him, and Lance looked down to his feet in embarrassment. Lance then looked up to see that Keith had been nearby and had seen all of that go down. That’s great, he had to be ridiculed and look lame in front of someone so cool. Lance looked away and rushed to their class and just braced through the class, waiting for it to end so he could talk to Hunk about it.
One day in one of their piloting classes, Keith had again done a maneuver beyond what they were practicing and Iverson had the whole class lined up to lecture them about why his maneuver was wrong. Griffin got mad at Keith and then was making a crude jab at Keith’s skills and his parents, but Keith punched him before he could finish the insult. The fight was stopped before Keith could hurt Griffin too much and then both of them got taken out of class to get disciplined. The class whispered as they were taken away and Lance found out that Keith was an orphan. Lance felt bad for Keith getting in trouble because Griffin was a jerk who dealt low blows and he had deserved that punch but he did like how that added to Keith’s bad boy appeal.
There were separate wings for staff and students and student wings were separated by year. There were kitchens, vending machines, study rooms and a few other common rooms in each wing. Lance had gotten some ingredients from the food storage room that was shared by all to take to the 1st year kitchen to cook a Cuban dish he had been in the mood for. There was no one else there, probably because most first years didn’t cook because they were enjoying cooked meals for them in the cafeteria, so Lance started singing along to the Cuban music he was listening to in his headphones. He was so focused on his cooking and his music that when he turned around while dancing along to the music, he screamed when he saw someone there. And of course it was Keith. Of course, because he just had to be embarrassing in front of the coolest person in his class. Lance took out his headphones.
“Sorry for screaming, I didn’t expect anyone else to be here now. You, um, caught me off guard,” he told Keith, embarrassed and blushing crazily. Lance was usually able to be suave and get out a pickup line, but he was stumbling on his words.
Keith was also blushing for some reason. Maybe he felt bad for scaring Lance. It took a minute before Keith was able to respond back to him. “Sorry to scare you... I was just going to get something because the kitchen Shiro cooks in is missing it.”
“You’re cool.” Lance paused. “Um, really cool, even with that mullet. You’re such a good pilot and it was cool how you punched Griffin.”
Keith waited a moment before saying anything back. “I heard what he said about you when you were leaving your sister. It was mean of him to make fun of you for being affectionate with your sister.”
“So you don’t agree with him and think it was lame?”
“Yeah, punching him clearly says I agree with him.”
“... Thanks.”
They both stood there, staring at each other in silence. Keith eventually cleared his throat and broke the silence. “Well, um, I better take this to Shiro, good luck with your delicious food, ok bye!” He said, rushing out of there with the tool that he needed. Lance blushed and smiled after he left and almost let something he was cooking burn.
***
So I have some dilemmas about how to continue with this. I’m not sure whether to give them an actual (platonic) relationship throughout the garrison to develop their “rivalry”, or even how a one-sided rivalry actually happens if Lance explicitly calls it a rivalry. Also, I hate Lance seeming second-rate in canon and I don’t really care for Keith remembering him by “you were a cargo pilot.” I think Lance is genuinely a good pilot and would have high rankings and actually be on a competitive field with Keith. Since it already happened in the actual show, I don’t think it should be too bad if in my fixit Keith remembers Lance by a different trait, like maybe his loud personality. Either way, I don’t think they should get too close throughout the garrison - I think it would be cute if they just both had small crushes on each other and thought the other one was cute but never really knew each other that well then they would slowly fall in love as they got closer while they fought in voltron together. When Lance meets Shiro I want Shiro to be like oh you were that guy Keith thought was super cute but obviously Keith would interrupt him before Shiro finishes.
If you have any ideas about this and the following things I would also like ideas/input for, feel free to message me or comment about it on this post!
Shadam - Since they didn’t even freaking try to develop Adam as a character and only showed him breaking up with him as Shiro left for Kerberos, I’m not really sure what kind of person to write Adam and thus I don’t know how to write how they would fall in love. What kind of person do you think Adam is?
Broganes - let’s be honest, the Garrison broganes relationship wasn’t that well written. They just showed how Keith and Shiro met and for such an important relationship I think they deserve more than that. I want to write more about how Shiro supports Keith and how Keith probably resisted him at first but eventually opened up a little for him. Mentor relationships are so important and I want to write about theirs
Since they were never officially given last names (except Shiro and Pidge), although it may be too late for my tags, I’d like to give everyone else ethnically accurate last names because proper representation is important. I don’t know any Cuban, Samoan or Korean last names so if you have any ideas or know any, feel free to suggest them!
