Omnics and Gender

I've always imagined that after "The Awakening," lots of bigots insisted on calling omnics "it." I mean, of course they aren't biologically any gender.

So here are some headcannons on how I think some of my favorite omnics came to realize what they identify as.

Zenyatta and Ramattra: I think it's called "gender apathetic"? They don't care what pronouns someone uses for them. He, she, they. As long as it's not used as an insult or in a negative way. Humans tend to assume he/him pronouns for both of them, and they just kinda except that.

B.O.B: my hc is that he was some sort or construction or heavy labor worker. Hence why he's so freaking huge. After gaining sentience, he got a job as a butler. Maybe used his paychecks to get that mustache and abs that really sells him as male. Even though he has a gentle side (often only shown to Ashe), he still loves to fight, shoot, punch, run, and all that stuff. Also, in the Reunion short, Ashe says she's gonna rebuild Bob. I think this confirms that he doesn't mind being modified in such ways.

Orisa and Bastion: I couldn't find a human equivalent for this. Basically when Bastion woke up in that forest, and Orisa was brought to life, the first pronouns they heard assigned to them is what they adopted as their gender. Of course Efi built a GIRL robot. Girls rule, boys drool, after all. And I like to think that Torbjorn's wife, Ingrid, gave Bastion the idea of being male, insisting Torbjorn stop calling him "it."

Echo: pretty simple. In the simplest if terms, She's a copy of a woman that really existed. Therefore, she must also be a woman.

Lynx Seventeen: canon gender neutral. After Awakening, they kept thinking they HAD to pick male or female. But neither felt right. So after much time being indecisive and bouncing between pronouns, they probably saw a ted talk or a seminar talking about it and discovered their prounouns.

Maximillen: chose to present as male for no other reason then he noticed that in the line of work he wanted to do (illegal shit), women weren't always respected. He didn't want to have to deal with the injustice of being an omnic AND a woman. If he ever faces justice, he 100% will be putting on a wig to try to get sent to a female prison.

Luna: always had very feminine tastes. When she first started wearing dresses and designing her "hair," the only attention she got was from bigots telling her she's not a real woman or perverts with an omnic fetish. So she took up singing to express herself. Despite what a lot of people think, an omnic can't just install a new voice and suddenly know how to sing. It took just as much time, dedication, and passion to train her voice as a human would. Now she is the main act, artists and celebrities around the world come to see her, and she is the realest woman in every room.

After rewatching it thirty times I think I got to the conclusion that the most painful thing about banana fish is not the big heart-wretching events and deaths but actually the small ones and what they mean. Allow me to elaborate.

Ash letting that rando in prison rape him, smiling at Marvin while he harasses him, even using his charm (probs the things he learnt Dino liked) to distract people. Stuff like this. It's filled with it. It wrecks my very soul. Why? Because they all show just how used Ash is to getting hurt. Used to being physically and mentally destroyed, to the point his own integrity counts so little that he can easily give it away in exchange when he needs to. So used to being nothing he lost meaning of his own value as a human being.

to start with, your looks could deceive most people. some would assume that you're just a cute, regular girl roaming down the streets, when in fact, you weren't.

so this leads to some guys ( or so ) flirting and trying to make a move on you. as disgusting as you find them, you had to agree in a oh-so-sweet manner, giving them a certain location as to where to find you.

of course, when they arrived there expecting for some sort of a 'date' with you, they're receiving their dead end instead.

guys like that don't deserve any mercy, or that's how you have it personally set within your own mind. ( totally not projecting )

but also i think since you can't just carry a gun with you all the time, you instead carry some sort of a small switchblade.

i imagined that you, despite your quite young age ( maybe around 16-17 or so ), are able to manage your own restaurant, to which originally was owned by your father, who is a drug dealer of some sort. your mother is unknown.

because of how successful your father's business is with the drugs, you became the main target of the ones who planned to take down your father.

due to how busy he is, he wasn't that close to you. so you were left to fend mostly by your own.

he did train you a bit for some time, but eventually, he let a certain Kazakh professional assassin; Blanca to train you instead.

and i feel like Blanca lowkey wants to go a bit softer at you during training, and of course, you didn't want any of that honestly. your relationship with him is pretty alright, and you both pretty much respected each other at some point.

and there you met Ash himself, when Blanca was also assigned to train him by Dino Golzine.

okay so, i'd like to think that at first, you and Ash are quite skeptical towards one another. not being too familiar still.

but that changes over time, of course.

it started by that one, random sunny day; you and Ash accidentally arrived early at the private training grounds where Blanca was supposed to train you both.

the two of you ended up conversing with each other-- Ash being the one who possibly initiates the convo first.

perhaps it started with a compliment. maybe the brand new shoes that you're wearing? the view; weather? or even just random small talks. it's still an effort nonetheless.

you're highly aware of the current reputation he holds as the gang leader of the city. it doesn't faze you much, as long as he remains nice to you.

and because of this, you sometimes do heard about Dino himself. back then, you didn't really pay any mind, but did recall that one time where your father said that he did some sort of a drug business with him etc..

but by the way he is regarded, you feel downright disgusted. selfish, ruthless even. but is well aware not someone to be provoked on.

so despite all of that, you remain well-mannered in a way. for the time being, that is. ( unless something or he crosses the line )

but i can't deny the fact that i imagined that you might be finding yourself doing the side-eye at him while he speaks with others; even having the urge to throw some insults or sarcastic remarks at him. but refrain from doing so just yet.

you hate him so so much because of what he did to Ash too.

overall, you despised people like Dino for existing on the surface of the Earth.

Shorter seemed like he would probably flirt with you at times, but you just laughed it off because it's like a normal thing now.

but Ash def isn't impressed.

knowing how long you and Ash have been training with each other, he silently grew fond and protective of you, despite you can handle yourself fine. i mean, you did manage a whole restaurant by yourself, after all.

also, random but i can see Ash is the type of guy to let his arm rest around your shoulders; doesn't matter while you're sitting or even standing. he would still do it out of habit.

i couldn't think of a proper confession or anything further romance related rn, but he will 1000000% take you out for a ride on his bike pretty often, especially during late nights <33

sometimes you just wanted to join Ash in whatever mission thingy or stuff he has to do or so; and of course, he would agree, but still deep down worried about your safety in general. ( maybe at some times, he would straight up refuse your offer. )

I hope you are well and Merry Christmas and (late) New Year, if it's not too much trouble, you could make a Hc where he and/or from Saga, Orphee, Sorrento, Aphrodite, Mu and Camus are like Ash Lynx from Banana fish, leader from a gang, respected, and very strong and intelligent, but emotionally fragile and mistrustful of others because of his past.

Saga:

When he found out you were the leader of a gang, he was impressed. When you brought him to meet the others he was deeply moved. He knew that you don’t just show off your gang to anyone. 

When he learned that you were well respected, he couldn’t help but smile at you. He watched how strong you had become for years and now, he could see everything paying off.

The day he learned of your past, his anger could be seen by everyone. He was angry. No scratch that, he was pissed. When he came to visit you in America after his overseas work was completed, the gang had come to tell him everything. 

Saga entered the house he had bought to house both you and your gang, he could hear the sobs leaving your lips. 

He will be the only one that can hold you. He’s the only one that can wrap his arms around you and hold you close. 

“What happened?” Saga left no room for you to shrug the question off.

“H-He t-touched me in w-ways that he shouldn’t” You tried to tell him without crying but the tears wouldn’t stop.

Let's just say that the person that had touched you in not-so-consensual ways ended up dead.

Orphee:

He is so proud to see you commanding a gang. 

He would watch you yell out orders or watch you find in a little gang fight. He is so love-smitten with you.

He remembered the first day that he saw you and your gang and couldn’t believe how much they respected you. The strength that you show when commanding your gang.

You have also shown that you can even help them when needing to fight an enemy. He’s proud of you. 

However, when he came home to you huddled in the corner, everyone shaking and trying to reach out to comfort you, he walked to the closest person and demanded an answer. 

They told him that you had gotten assaulted and everything that had happened to you in your past resurfaced. 

He walked towards you and sat down in front of you and crossed his arms. A smile graced his lips as he leaned closer to you. You didn’t move from him. 

He calmed you down and proceeded to leave you to your gang as he went after the person that caused this and disposed of them.

Sorrento:

He is impressed. How could he not be when you run a gang and have time to be with him?

Sorrento could watch you yell out orders and command your gang every day if he wanted to.

He loved that you would do anything for your gang.

In his eyes, he didn’t mind that you didn’t have a cosmos, he could see just how strong you are

The day he returned from a mission, he noticed how his friends were trying to get you to leave your room and it confused him. 

“Y/n? What’s wrong?” He called out.

You opened your door and pulled him into your room before burying your face in his shoulder. He could feel your tears soaking through his shirt. 

AFter learning what happened, he left while you were sleeping to deal with the problem himself.

Aphrodite:

He studied the idea of you being a gang member but not the leader. Don’t get him wrong, you were very strong, but he didn’t think that your strength would live up to that of a leader.

When he found out you were the leader, he was beyond impressed. He did however know that you were stronger than you let on.

Aphrodite was impressed witht he level of respect that you gained from your members and the respect you poured out to them.

Aphrodite prides himself on showing you off to the world, or in this case, his friends, Athena and only them. 

He knows about your past and vows to protect you no matter what. 

So imagine his face when he comes home and finds you, in tears, blood splattered across your face and covering your hands.

The assailant laying on the floor dead. Aphrodite would be so pissed that he would kick the corpse away from you and drop to his knees. 

He would cradle your face in his hands and take deep breaths hoping that you would catch on a follow his lead. 

“That’s my girl.”

Mu:

Mu will sit back and watch you do your thing. 

He loves that you are a gang leader, makes it so he doesn’t stress himself stupid.

Mu loves that your gang show you the utmost respect that a gang could ever muster while you returned that respect tenfold.

Mu loves when you are vulnerable with him though. He knows about your past and would never push you if you didn’t want to talk.

When he saw it close to happening before his own eyes however, he lost all sense of reality. 

He beat the person that had pinned you to the ground with a sickening look on their face and nearly beat them to death. 

You pulled him off and begged him to just hold you. Mu did just as you asked.

While holding you in his arms, he made sure to restrain the assailant and call the police. 

Mu would stare at the person laying on the floor with utter hatred and rage boiling in them, but you were always there to calm him down.

Camus:

He didn’t like the idea of you being a part of a gang at first but the more he visited and the more he saw how you worked, he grew to like it.

Camus would stop by just to watch you shout or give orders to your members with a bright smile on your face, and hands on your hips before shaking your head and chuckling. 

The respect that your members had for you astonished Camus the first time he had seen it with his own eyes. It was like a pack of ravenous wolves protecting their comrade. 

When you had grown comfortable telling Camus about your past, he couldn’t help the anger and hatred boiling in his blood. 

“How dare they do that to you. How dare they defile your body.”

You would have to calm him down or he would freeze the entire 50-radius that you owned

Whenever you went out alone, he would stand by your side, watching everyone that came within contact of you. 

One person tried grabbing your hand and pulling you towards an alleyway but Camus was fast and froze that person’s arm. 

“Try that again and you won’t live to tomorrow.”

--despite how much narumitsu I post, I REALLY love the hc of aro[ace?] Edgeworth, especially with lines that would support it (like this one below)

Everything about him would remain the same, his devotion to the truth and to Phoenix as well! Edgeworth remains the same (in my mind, at least) in all cirumstances. His devotion just. Ugh. Chef's kiss. It's phenomenal, and it would hit just as well in platonic circumstances, like. I am so devoted to you, my friend, let's traverse this crazy world together.

4. Foo Fighters

--aside from the fact they are just plankton taking a corpse's body as a host, I think I really connected to Foo because of how devoted she was to Jolyne as a friend and how much their platonic love resonated within and meant so much to Jolyne. I just really love when platonic love is shown to hit just as hard as romantic love, and how friends can and will go to any lengths for their friend(s), and FF was/is such a great representation of that.

3. Ash Lynx

--as much as I adore the idea of asheiji, I think Ash was very aroace coded (at the very least aro-coded). Finding meaning in his really bleak world via his friendships (mainly with Shorter and Eiji) and those friendships keeping him going despite everything he had to deal with really meant a lot to me. Ash means a lot to me!! And I will forever think that killing him off was such a terrible ending, sends SUCH a bad message. Anyways this wasn't supposed to be a BF rant. He found happiness within someone (Eiji) who saw the worst parts of him, saw what he was capable of, as well as the trauma he carried and wanted to get closer despite all that. I just love!! When people can see the ugly sides of each other and use that to get closer instead of drift apart, it makes me !!!! WAHHH, especially with friends, like. No matter what, I will always be there for you! I do not expect any reimbursement or rewards or whatever, I just want to be by your side forever as your friend!! And that's what Ash wanted with Eiji; to be his friend and remain by his side, because they really accepted each other and made each other happy. He didn't necessarily crave intimacy or affection, he just wanted to have someone who would accept him despite it all. Can you tell how Normal I am about him :)

--I also don't have an explanation, I just feel it 😭 I know he got married but maybe at some point he had a realization or something? I really don't know but he was also a character that seemed to be much more impacted by his friendships. I guess you could use the fact that he rejected girls left and right as evidence but Jotaro's just an asshole so for me, that doesn't really prove much lol. And it's not even an "I can't see him being romantic with anyone and being happy! He's too independent for that kind of stuff!!" kind of thing; I believe if he let himself be vulnerable with a romantic partner, he very well could, but it's the fact he's much more likely to do this with friends and finds contentment via his friendships that just make me believe he at least has aro aspects of him. He could be, or he could not! Either way, he's an interesting character

Ash definitely calls Eiji bird related pet-names.

They started out simple like "little bird" and "birdie" but then got more creative with things like "little sparrow" and "my starling" but over time it's gotten progressively weirder like "my sweet spangled drongo" and "cute fluffy-backed-tit-babbler." And Ash just keeps it going because of the adorably confused face Eiji makes when he calls him things like "red-rumped bush-tyrant."

—Ace due to trauma which is 1,000% valid. Biromantic

—BIG Nirvana fan

—Collects music in any physical format he can get his hands on. Vinyl records, CDs, even cassette tapes.

—He listens to music LOUD. Fucking blasts it, always. That shit is cleansing.

—PTSD, obviously. Music helps. So does Eiji. And… journaling, but don’t tell anybody.

—Can remember things very far back and has several childhood memories with Griffin from before he went off to war

—Can’t make much more than boxed Mac and Cheese tbh. Thinks American-style ramen is fine cuisine

—“What the fuck”

—Eiji introduces him to journal-writing to help with his PTSD. He writes it off as unnecessary, but continues journaling in secret.

—Has tried Many drugs in his life, but he doesn’t like any of them. Doesn’t like, can’t fucking stand, the vulnerable state they put him in, and the feeling of getting high freaks him out. Same with drinking. Shorter understands.

—Has literally never tried any sort of drugs in his life, marijuana included, so when he gets high with Shorter for the first time it’s a fucking EXPERIENCE

—Doesn’t drink caffeine a whole lot, but when he does it hits him HARD, holy shit. Fucking bouncing off the walls

—Not only is fall his favorite season, but he 1,000% throws himself into all of the “basic” fall things, pumpkin spice and fall fashion aesthetics included. And, teasing Ash about pumpkins is a surprising, but very delightful, bonus.

—Photographs everything. Favorite social media is Instagram and he actually has a decent following. But, he never posts anything with Ash without his permission, and most of the pictures that go up on IG don’t include Ash’s face.

—Ash’s eyes have always been compared to Jade. It’s even in his name. But, that association is tainted by Dino and his men, and the more Ash hears somebody say his eyes are like Jade, the more he hates it. (Especially when it comes to older men making the comparison, for obvious reasons).

Eiji, too, thinks Ash’s eyes are beautiful. But, he doesn’t compare them to Jade. No.

He tells Ash that his eyes are like evergreen.

Shorter:

banana fish hc (or more like my interpretation of things): the reason why, at the beginning (episode 5), Ash so easily agrees to Eiji going with him (even though at first he doesn't want to, cause "it's too dangerous and you can't watch out for yourself") is that unconsciously he wants him to. Ash doesn't know Eiji all that good yet, but he already became a symbol of purity, of goodness, of normal life to him. He already became his lifeline. Even though Ash knows he's putting him in danger, he still deeply wants not to get parted from that.
