It still breaks my heart that Blizzard hasn't done anything with Lynx Seventeen since their first appearance. I was about to say "I think a lot of the cynicism is added by me" but I revisited the comic and it's like "Oh yeah, Lynx actually really was a sassy binch."

Lynx: So... sure. Maybe what Aurora did was miraculous, purely because our sentience is now as indefinable as human sentience. But I just don't see the point in building a society so imitative of human religion around it. Kind of seems stupid to immediately make it after getting free will, right?

Zenyatta: Ritual practices are a common coping mechanism in the face of sudden awareness of the vastness of what free will entails. I cannot say to what extent our actions were imitative, but surely you can respect the need to recognize our sentience as sacred to our very being and the creation of rituals and communities in support of those rituals is... natural.

Lynx: You know there are omnics out there using their sacred sentience to be total morons, right?

Zenyatta: And that is not something they would be able to do under Anubis. Isn't it wonderful?

Lynx: Uggghhhh you're impossible.

Omnics and Gender

I've always imagined that after "The Awakening," lots of bigots insisted on calling omnics "it." I mean, of course they aren't biologically any gender.

So here are some headcannons on how I think some of my favorite omnics came to realize what they identify as.

Zenyatta and Ramattra: I think it's called "gender apathetic"? They don't care what pronouns someone uses for them. He, she, they. As long as it's not used as an insult or in a negative way. Humans tend to assume he/him pronouns for both of them, and they just kinda except that.

B.O.B: my hc is that he was some sort or construction or heavy labor worker. Hence why he's so freaking huge. After gaining sentience, he got a job as a butler. Maybe used his paychecks to get that mustache and abs that really sells him as male. Even though he has a gentle side (often only shown to Ashe), he still loves to fight, shoot, punch, run, and all that stuff. Also, in the Reunion short, Ashe says she's gonna rebuild Bob. I think this confirms that he doesn't mind being modified in such ways.

Orisa and Bastion: I couldn't find a human equivalent for this. Basically when Bastion woke up in that forest, and Orisa was brought to life, the first pronouns they heard assigned to them is what they adopted as their gender. Of course Efi built a GIRL robot. Girls rule, boys drool, after all. And I like to think that Torbjorn's wife, Ingrid, gave Bastion the idea of being male, insisting Torbjorn stop calling him "it."

Echo: pretty simple. In the simplest if terms, She's a copy of a woman that really existed. Therefore, she must also be a woman.

Lynx Seventeen: canon gender neutral. After Awakening, they kept thinking they HAD to pick male or female. But neither felt right. So after much time being indecisive and bouncing between pronouns, they probably saw a ted talk or a seminar talking about it and discovered their prounouns.

Maximillen: chose to present as male for no other reason then he noticed that in the line of work he wanted to do (illegal shit), women weren't always respected. He didn't want to have to deal with the injustice of being an omnic AND a woman. If he ever faces justice, he 100% will be putting on a wig to try to get sent to a female prison.

Luna: always had very feminine tastes. When she first started wearing dresses and designing her "hair," the only attention she got was from bigots telling her she's not a real woman or perverts with an omnic fetish. So she took up singing to express herself. Despite what a lot of people think, an omnic can't just install a new voice and suddenly know how to sing. It took just as much time, dedication, and passion to train her voice as a human would. Now she is the main act, artists and celebrities around the world come to see her, and she is the realest woman in every room.

Shower Thoughts Time!

I think it’s obvious how much I can’t wait for the comfort, humor, and angst that the Story Missions will hopefully provide between our favorite heroes, but I’m also excited by the thought of not everyone getting along or seeing eye-to-eye. Does that make sense?

Specifically, I was thinking about the interaction between D.Va and Torbjörn where Hana says “I heard your inventions take five minutes to boot up!” It is OBVIOUS who she heard that from. Torbjörn’s incessant bashing of the rookie in Uprising continues to haunt him, just when he thought endlessly hearing “The cavalry’s here!” after he said it once was the end of it. Of course, Angela was also ruthless towards him in Uprising. I just think everyone harrassing him is funny. I don’t think Torbjörn dislikes Lena in the seven or eight years that have passed, but I hope to see more of their back-and-forth bickering.

There’s also the many lines towards Cole when reviving him in PvE, like:

Pharah: “Cassidy went down again! Somebody save him!... Again!”

Zarya: “Cole, you are being a baby.”

Tracer: “YoU’Re WeLcOmE, PaRtNeR! (giggles)”

But those are all playful. On the other hand, I thought about the contrast between Zarya’s “Revive Dr. Zhou! Quick!” line and “The British one needs to be revived” line, and I found it to be strange. The latter doesn’t sound inherently nasty, but it’s just weird of Aleksandra to not even use Lena’s call sign. I believe the only other generalizations we see like this are when people call Cassidy “cowboy”, probably because the lines were written before the development team settled on a new name, and people calling the various scientists by some form of “doctor”. Maybe I’m reading into it too much, because Aleksandra can be friendly with Lena (See: “You sure know how to bring people together!” / “And you know how to blow them up!”)

I just think it would be interesting to see a clash in ideologies across the newer generation of Overwatch, because no one ever gets along with everyone in real life. What if Aleksandra didn’t agree with how Lena views omnics, for example? I would imagine that she is struggling after meeting Lynx Seventeen. She wasn’t even sure why she felt compelled to rescue them, and she said she would have killed them herself days prior. Even then, she hasn’t grown close enough with an omnic only to lose them much like Lena has with Mondatta and Lady, so she might not get it, you know?

Then, there are characters like Hanzo, who has “This is no place for a scientist” for a revive line. We can presume that Hanzo will join Overwatch after both the Dragons cinematic and whatever happens in his short story in the Heroes Ascendant collection, and I would imagine that he would find fighting alongside a super-intelligent talking gorilla from the moon to be preposterous, for example.

Or is the line, perhaps, directed towards Mei? Proto VI’s video of PVE voicelines claims that the aforementioned line is directed towards Winston, but AFAIK from my own experiences, there is no way in the fanmade file extraction tool to tell how a line is triggered or who it is directed towards.

I say this because there’s also Satya (who might defect to Overwatch alongside Niran after her upcoming short story), who has an interaction with Mei in PvP.

Symmetra: “I can't imagine that you're here to do research. Why are you fighting?“

Mei: “I'm here to make a difference in the world. Just like you, right?“

Jack also had a now-removed interaction with Mei in Overwatch 1.

Soldier: 76: “The front lines are no place for a scientist.”

Mei: “I guess it’s a good thing I have you to watch my back.”

Hanzo sounds condescending, Satya sounds curious, and Jack sounds disappointed, as if he’s guilty that someone like Mei feels they have to fight for the better world that he, a soldier genetically enhanced for combat, could not achieve. Still, their sentiment is all the same: Mei does not belong in combat.

We also have characters like Lúcio.  Lúcio was literally created to be the embodiment of Lena’s phrase “The world could always use more heroes.” He is a freedom fighter and political activist who, I would say, has definitely proven his worth in the fight against Vishkar, but we can’t forget that Lúcio is also a celebrity DJ. I love, love, love this interaction you can hear from 2019 demos:

Lúcio: “All we can do is fight. If we can beat them in Rio, then we can beat them anywhere, but we start here.”

Tracer: “We? I like the sound of that...”

The Rio team saw Lúcio in action as they were deploying, and they knew they could use his help just as much as he could use theirs. However, I can’t imagine that, say, the New Blood team will roll up to Watchpoint: Gibraltar and not raise eyebrows at the sight of international celebrity DJ Lúcio Correia dos Santos standing there, glowing green hair accessories, roller blades, and all. Imagine early 2010s Skrillex in his place if you can’t imagine how ridiculous that must look to everyone, as capable of a fighter as Lúcio is.

All of this is to say, I think it would be great to have conflict between our heroes in the form of childish bickering amid trivial disagreements, sure. I would also like to see heroes have disagreements in the beliefs that stem from their different backgrounds. Lastly, it would also tie into the overarching theme of “The world could always use more heroes” if we see a few of our heroes be brushed off and doubted by their peers only to prove that everyone can dare to see the world for what it could be, as Dr. Harold Winston put it.

The overwatch genesis anime shorts were AMAZING! specially Aurora's message in part three, that made me cry. I wonder how the omnics would react to the documentary.

Ramattra: The narrative is never our own. Is that our fate, as mere... creations of humanity? Even with the gift given to us by Aurora, that miracle is only framed in the context of 'it stopped the attacks on humans.' Our souls are seen only as positive in that they make us hesitate from pulling the trigger on those who would just as easily be our destroyers. They aren't seen as an equivalent to humanity, but rather a thin buffer from the destructive nature they assume we have. We only need step out of line once to see how much 'humanity' they think we have.

Zenyatta: I had always framed Aurora's decision as... graceful and miraculous. To see her step into that machine and be taken apart... it is much to think about. Indeed, her bravery was always a part of her ascension, and it is poignant that her creator was there at the very end, to see that transformation... it is easy to forget that sacrifice of the physical self was a necessary part of it.

Orisa: "You have this one life. Choose well." Does that still count if Efi has several backups of my AI? *quietly* I hope it counts.

Echo: It's hard to really want to live up to Echo's wish for you when you're constantly being compared to her. Can I really say my life is mine?

Lynx Seventeen: ...so what was up with that one omnic guy's lips? Am I the only one distracted by that?

Everyone's description from the book (the Curtis Gang)

For anyone who needs it.

Darrel 'Darry' Curtis

Darry is 6"2 with broad, muscular shoulders. He had dark-brown hair that kicks in the front and a slight cowlick in the back (just like his father's). He has pale blue-green eyes, almost like peices of ice. They have a determined set to them, just like the rest of him. He looks older than his age, but he's tough, cool and smart. "He would be real handsome if his eyes weren't so cold." He doesn't understand anything but hard fact, but he uses his head.

Sodapop 'Soda' Curtis

He's handsome, not like Darry. Hes movie-star handsome, "the kind people stop on the street to watch go by." He's not as tall as Darry, he's slimmer with a finely drawn, sensitive face. His face somehow manages to be reckless and thoughtful at the same time. He's got dark-gold hair that he combs back--- long silky and straight. In the summer the sun bleaches it to a shining wheat gold. His eyes are a dark brown--- lively, dancing, recklessly laughing eyes. His eyes can be gentle and sympathetic one moment and blazing with anger the next. He has his father's eyes, but Soda is one of a kind. He can get drunk on plain living. And he understands everybody.

Ponyboy 'Pony' Curtis

He has light-brown, almost-red hair and greenish-grey eyes. His hair is longer than most boys wear theirs, squared off in the back and long at the front and sides.

Steve Randle

He is seventeen, tall and lean. He has thick, greasy hair He kept combed in complicated swirls. He was tacky and smart. Steve's specialty was cars, he knew cars upside-down and backwards, he could drive anything on wheels. He works at the same gas station as Soda, Steve part-time and Soda full-time. Steve is Soda's best friend, he has known him since grade school.

Keith 'Two-bit' Mathews

He's the oldest of the gang and the wisecracker of the bunch. He's about six feet tall, stocky in build, and very proud of his long rusty colored sideburns. He has grey eyes and a wide grin. He couldn't stop making funny remarks to save his life. He always had to get his two-bits worth in, hence his name. Life was one big joke to Two-bit. He was famous for shoplifting and his black-handle switchblade (which is stolen). He's always smarting off to the cops. He liked fights, blondes, and school. He is still a junior at 18 and a half and never learned anything.

Dallas 'Dally' Winston

He has an elfish face, with high cheekbones and a pointed chin, small sharp animal teeth and ears like a lynx. His hair is almost white because it was so blonde. He doesn't like haircuts or hair oil either. His hair falls over his forehead in wisp and kicked out in the back in tufts and curled behind his ears and along the nape of his neck. His eyes are blue, like blazing ice with " a cold hatred of the world". He has spent 3 years on the wild side of New York and had been arrested at the age of ten. He was tougher than the rest of the gang, tougher, colder, and meaner. The shade of difference that separates a greaser from a hood wasn't present in Dally. He was wild, like Tim Shepard's gang.

Johnny Cade

He was the last and least of the gang. You can picture a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you'll have Johnny. He is the youngest next to Pony. He was smaller than the rest, with a slight build. He has big black eyes in a dark tanned face; his hair was jet-black and heavily greased and combed to the side, but it was so long it fell as shaggy bangs across his forehead. He has a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes, the beatings he got from the socs didn't help that. He is the gang's pet, everyone's kid brother. His father was always beating him up and his mother ignored him. You could hear his mother yelling at him from the Curtis house. He would have ran away millions of times if it weren't for the gang.
