Rewatching the interrogation of Visser in season 1, since @illicthearts pointed out Zoya knew about Zlatan’s plot to kill Alina and:
Yes, indeed, she was present to everything but Visser’s execution.
Why didn’t she say anything to Alina? She had enough time to share her plans for future, hug Alina and act like her new bestie, but I guess mentioning they’ve just killed the guy, who stopped opening of third frontline and got rid of people, who wanted the Great Sankta dead just didn’t make it on her agenda.
What is one aunt’s life worth? Continuation of two lives-long wars, destruction of the only safe place for hunted minority and murder of the sole, relatively powerful person, who cares about any of it.
Speaking of which, tracking Alina took some time. Zoya has officer’s training, she should know Novokribirsk isn’t safe anymore. Why didn’t she send a letter home? Yes, it could be intercepted or censored, but her aunt lives in dangerous place. They could have some sort of code by then. Hell, having relatives in one of centres of separatist efforts’s dumb af at least.
We can clearly see Zoya will make an amazing Queen. Selfless, willing to face hard choices...
Why aren’t there any gifs of Ivan from this part? He’s hilarious to watch!
I’d pay real money to watch comedic duo of The Black General and His Loyal Henchman.
I won’t even start about the Crows also knowing all about Zlatan. They’re slave traders in the show. If they’d say anything, Alina might realize what they wanted her for. Better not risk it.

Season 1 Kaz: We need to find a way into the Little Palace, so I have planned a highly elaborate heist that requires deception, disguises and abseiling.
Arken Visser: Or, I could just critically injure a performer so that we can become employed by a travelling theatre troupe.
Jesper: Okay, wow, dark.
Kaz: ...yeah. Sure. We could do that.
Season 2 Kaz: We need to locate Henrik's office, so I have planned a highly elaborate heist-
Nina: Or, I could just ask the waitress for directions.
Jesper: ...this feels familiar, somehow.
Kaz: ......

With a Musketeers IF joining the gang (@theinseparables-if), I would like to let everyone know that there is a BBC series called The Musketeers which stars (among others) Santiago Cabrera as Aramis (aka Lancelot from BBC Merlin) looking very good 👀
It’s not the best show, but it’s a definite comfort show (pretty much like Merlin I guess).

With the passengers on the skiff still reeling from Aleksander’s manipulation of the Fold, you’re provided with the opportunity to carry out the next stage in your plan.
Whilst no one is looking, Aleksander bends the shadows around you in an attempt to conceal you from vision.
Glancing down at yourself, you don’t notice any difference. Aleksander is still looking at you, and it’s only when Alina moves closer, asking him where you had gone, that you realise he had succeeded. You’re invisible.
Aleksander must still be able to see you, as his eyes still find yours whilst you’re cloaked in his shadows. Giving him a small nod, you move to the edge of the skiff.
Once Zoya brings the skiff to a stop at the docks, you slide away unnoticed by anyone but Aleksander.
It’s easy enough to weave your way through the crowd, though it’s difficult to remember that people can’t see you. There’s a few instances in which someone almost barrels right into you, as people move around frantically.
You can’t imagine how frightening it must have been, seeing the Fold rushing towards you, running away even though you know there would be no chance of you outrunning such a monstrosity.
A shiver runs through you, as you realise that Novokribirsk is still standing because of you. If the story had unfolded as it should have, this entire town would be consumed by darkness, it’s people torn apart by the volcra.
It doesn’t take you long to find General Zlatan. His brows are furrowed as he speaks with some rather unnerved looking First Army officers. From the looks of it, they seem rather reluctant to carry out whatever Zlatan wants them to do.
They stay at the edge of the docks, as Zlatan straightens himself and moves along the wooden structure towards Aleksander as he steps off the skiff.
You trail close behind Zlatan, unseen. A few dignitaries that had been on the skiff breeze by the General, followed by Ivan and Fedoyr, as well as some other passengers.
“General Kirigan.” Zlatan calls out in greeting, to which Aleksander nods with feigned politeness.
“Zlatan.”
“That was quite the entrance.”
Zlatan’s fingers are fidgeting with the grip of the sword that hangs at his side. Aleksander’s display of power has clearly shaken the First Army General.
Then he straightens, evidently seizing some courage, and grasps at his sword. Only for you to get to him first.
His sword is half unsheathed as you seize a fistful of his hair, yanking his head back as you press your knife into his side, right against the artery, like Fedoyr had showed you.
Aleksander loosens his hold on the shadows surrounding you.
“I wouldn’t do that, if I were you.” You warn Zlatan in a low voice.
His eyes are wide and startled at the sight of you, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. You press your knife harder against his side when he attempts to struggle.
Glancing over at Aleksander, you see him nod his head, and you release Zlatan, shoving him backwards hard, where Fedoyr waits to grab him. From the grimace on Zlatan’s face, you can tell that Ivan also has a hold on his heart.
“Take him to the town’s holding cells.” Aleksander orders them.
“You have nothing on me, Kirigan.” Zlatan spits out angrily, but you can see the fear in his eyes.
“Don’t I?” Aleksander retorts calmly, raising a brow at the increasingly frantic looking Zlatan. “Your acquaintance, Arken Visser, sends his regards.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Zlatan protests. “Let me go.”
His dissent soon falters as Ivan and Fedoyr drag him through the crowd, away into the town. First Army officers stand aside, though most of them are too captivated by Alina to even notice their distressed General.
A few people are kneeling, while others raise their arms in thanks to the saints. All around you, whispers of prayer and piety rise from the people. All for one person.
Sankta Alina.
»»---------------------►
Os Kervo smells of the sea.
West Ravka is smaller than East Ravka, so the journey to the country’s port city is quicker than riding from Os Alta to Kribirsk, which you’re thankful for.
The boarding house that you’ve secured for the length of your stay is in a quieter area of the city, and your room has a view of the sea. As you’re settling in, you open up your window to hear the distant sound of waves lapping at the shore, and gulls soaring above.
“I know we’re here on a mission. Not for fun.” You say lightly, as Aleksander sits writing at the desk in your room. He lifts his head, eyes narrowing faintly at your tone.
“But?”
“But, there’s a patch of beach a little further down the coast.” You fiddle with one of his pencils, twirling it between your fingers. “Alina’s never seen the True Sea.”
“This isn’t another ploy to bring myself and Alina closer together?” You shake your head, looking down a little sheepishly.
“When I was younger, there wasn’t a summer that went by without a visit to the beach and… well I miss it.”
He studies your face for a long moment, considering your words as he places his pen down and folds his hands together.
“Will tomorrow afternoon suffice?” He asks. “I have a meeting with the First Army Kaptain here in the morning, but we can leave after that.”
You look up at him, surprised.
“You don’t have to come with us.”
“You can’t go alone.”
“You could ask Ivan, or someone, to keep an eye on us.” He shakes his head.
“I will go with you.”
The next morning, Alina is positively giddy once you tell her about your trip, and she immediately ropes Mal into joining you as well.
Whilst Aleksander is meeting with the local First Army Kaptain, you make the necessary preparations for the four of you to ride down the coastline towards the patch of beach you had heard about.
When you see Aleksander approaching as you see to the horses, you immediately notice the tension in his shoulders, though that loosens once he catches sight of you through the people milling about on the street.
“How was it?” You ask in a low voice, and Aleksander dips his head down as he takes his horse’s reins from your hands.
“Later.” He assures you in a murmur. “We should enjoy the afternoon.”
The two of you look up at the sky, a cool layer of cloud shielding you from the sun.
“Hopefully it won’t rain.”
“I don’t believe it will.”
Aleksander is usually right about the weather, and you wonder if it’s a benefit of his immortality. He’s seen the sky before every storm over hundreds of years, if anyone can read the weather it would be him.
You take one of the less known roads out of Os Kervo, meaning that the ride down to the remote stretch of sandy shoreline is rather peaceful. The chilly breeze stings your cheeks, and you breathe in the fresh salty air with a content smile.
Alina is ecstatic to see the True Sea so close, and she’s the first person to dismount once your horses begin to tread over the sand.
“Come on.” Alina urges you with an eager smile, tugging on your wrist.
As you turn to dismount, you catch Aleksander’s gaze as he scours the surrounding area with a small frown. He gives you a reassuring nod, and you instantly know that it’s safe for you to let your guard down.
With a grin, you slide down from your horse, giving Alina a light shove before you take off running, calling out a delighted,
“Race you.”
She sprints after you, followed by Mal. He ends up reaching the sea first, and you roll your eyes at his triumphant grin, while Alina splashes him in response.
The three of you run, and chase each other, laughing and shrieking like children as you wade through the cold sea. It isn’t long before you’re shivering, but your enjoyment keeps you warm enough to continue.
Once you’ve exerted yourself, you return to Aleksander’s side, and the two of you walk along the length of the beach as Alina and Mal continue to run through the freezing water.
When you shiver, Aleksander unclasps his cloak and settles it around your shoulders. A grateful smile tugs on your lips as the soft fur brushes over your cheeks. As subtly as you can, you dip your face down to inhale Aleksander’s scent as it lingers on the fabric, and a warm feeling floods through your body.
You watch where you’re stepping as you walk, eyes scouring over each pebble and shattered sea shell that has been washed up to shore. A sudden sense of nostalgia seizes you.
“When I was small, I used to hunt along the sand for pieces of treasure.” You say softly.
The person from a small town in East Ravka that you’re pretending to be has never seen the True Sea, but you can share this memory with Aleksander. The only one who knows who you really are.
The corner of his mouth lifts fondly.
“Treasure?”
“Smoothened pieces of glass or broken pottery mostly.” You admit. “Though one time I found a clay milk bottle that was almost intact.”
Aleksander’s smile widens.
“I used to do something similar. When I was a boy, we were living in Novyi Zem for a few months.”
The two of you turn sharply at the sound of Alina crying out, but it’s only in protest of Mal carrying her in his arms and threatening to drop her into the water. So, Aleksander continues.
“There was an area of coastline, full of rocky crags, and I used to climb over them to search through the rock pools.”
The image of a miniature Aleksander, clambering over rocks and seaweed to peek into rock pools in search of hidden treasures has a smile growing on your face. Even with hundreds of years separating your childhoods, the two of you still have plenty of common ground.
A few times you bend down to examine a shell, or a particularly nice looking stone. Aleksander makes his own findings, turning them over with the tip of his boot until you can pick it up and admire it.
Once you’ve walked far enough, the two of you turn and head back to where you had left the horses. Aleksander has been quiet, and you know he must be thinking deeply about something. His brows are furrowed as he stares out at the sea.
“Something is bothering you.”
He looks over at you.
“The Navy is rather reluctant to assist us in our search.” Aleksander explains with a small sigh as he stares down at the sand beneath your feet. “The only ship large enough for our needs will be unavailable until summer.”
That’s too long to wait. You don’t say it aloud, because no doubt Aleksander is already thinking such a thing. Instead you say,
“I may have an idea.”
The corner of Aleksander’s mouth twitches with the hint of a smile, and amusement softens his previously dire expression.
“What is it?”
“Have you heard of a captain named Sturmhond?”
»»---------------------►
Aleksander did not like the idea of you going into Os Kervo’s roughest tavern in search of a pirate, especially alone. But you had insisted that if he, or even any of the other Grisha, came with you then you would be recognised. Hiring Sturmhond would require some subtlety.
Though you can’t help but agree with Aleksander’s sentiments, as you weave through the crowded bar, trying to find a spot to sit and observe. Especially when you feel the weight of your coin pouch leave your pocket, and you seize hold of someone’s wrist.
“I think that belongs to me.” You state as calmly as you can, keeping a tight hold of the man’s wrist.
He attempts to stare you down for a long moment, but you’re not afraid of a thief, not when you’ve faced Aleksander head on without knowing whether he would have you killed.
Then a man laughs from his nearby seat at the bar.
“Come on Bradshaw, if you’re gonna pick pockets don’t get angry when someone calls you out on it.”
The man, Bradshaw, looks between your determined expression and the fixed stare of the newcomer. Between them both, the newcomer suddenly has the majority of your attention.
He seems tall, and well built, with muddy red hair and green eyes. A familiar combination of features, that you’re certain you’ve read about. Bradshaw seemingly decides on the safest option, handing you your pouch back before he disappears into the crowd.
Sliding your money into your inside pocket this time, you nod towards the man who had come to your aid.
“Thanks.” He shrugs away your gratitude and gestures to the seat beside him.
“Have a drink with me?”
“I don’t accept drinks from strangers.” You reply smoothly.
“Well then, how about I introduce myself?” He says with a smirk lingering on his lips. “Sturmhond, at your service.”
Also known as the Second Prince Nikolai of Ravka, though you hope you won’t have to use that information to blackmail him.
“Sturmhond? The pirate?”
The corner of his smirk twitches as he feigns offence, and he corrects you,
“Privateer.” Raising your hands lightly in mock surrender, you smile.
“Do forgive me.” He grins.
“How about that drink then?”
With a nod, you accept the seat beside him, and he orders a drink for you both.
“As a matter of fact, you’re exactly the man I’ve been looking for.”
His eyes run over you in response to your words, no doubt trying to get a read on you under the guise of flirting.
“You’re not the first to tell me such a thing.”
“Are you always this cocky and self assured?” You remark with a raised brow, as the bartender places your drinks down in front of you both.
“High praise indeed. You must want something from me.”
Deciding not to waste any time, you state your demands.
“A ship and crew, to take myself and a small group along the Bone Road.”
The corner of his mouth twitches in amusement, as he traces his pointer finger down the length of his glass.
“Why do I suspect this is something to do with the appearance of the sun summoner, and a certain Second Army General?”
“And if I told you that said General was interested in hiring you?”
He leans closer to you, lowering his voice as he says,
“I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but I’m currently wanted by the Ravkan government for piracy.” You can’t help but remark teasingly,
“I thought you were a privateer.”
There’s a spark of laughter in his eyes before he leans away from you with a shrug, taking another drink.
“Needs must, sweetheart.”
“You’ll be paid handsomely. On our return to Ravka we can part ways, no consequences on your end. I can assure you.”
“You speak for the Darkling?”
Something in you bristles at Aleksander being called the Darkling. You know it’s the most common name used for him among Ravka’s everyday people, but it still has you feeling unsettled.
Nevertheless, you nod.
“Yes. I do.”
Sturmhond leans back on his elbow.
“Rumour has it you’re searching for the sea dragon. You’re asking me to risk my time, resources, and crew for the sake of a myth.”
“A few months ago the sun summoner was a myth.” You reason, but you can see he needs more of an incentive. “No one else is up for the challenge, but you seem like a man who would enjoy doing the impossible.”
Challenge sparks in his eyes, and you know you have him now. He leans closer, remarking with a confident grin.
“I prefer the term improbable.”

The Winter Fete is almost upon you. You hate it. The court treats Grisha like circus monkeys doing fancy tricks for their amusement. Thank Saints, you don't have to do anything for it. Or so you think…
One day you're working with David on another invention, when Aleksander walks in with Ivan close behind him. He smiles at you and you can't help but smile back. Even though he's been breaking your heart, it still brings you joy to see him.
'General,' David greets him and glances at you. 'How can we help you?'
'The Winter Fete is almost here,' Kirigan says and you both nod. 'This year it's going to be really special, because of the Sun Summoner. How she will perform will determine who's our ally… and who's our foe. We have to make sure it will go splendidly and will be a true show of her power.'
'She's been practising very hard,' you say, frowning. You try to ignore the ping in your heart that you feel because he's here for Alina not you. You try to be objective about it. You're not sure whether you succeed.
'I know that she has,' General agrees. 'But it's just been months. She's still new to this and have never performed during the Winter Fete. If there's something you can do to help her, I'm asking you to do it. For example, something that will help split one beam of light in two.'
'We could…' David starts slowly after a moment. You two look at each other. You bite your inner cheek. You nod.
'Gloves,' you say. 'We could use-'
'Yes,' David agrees quickly. 'And then we could-'
'Yeah, but only if we-' you say.
'Ah, yes,' David agrees and turns to baffled Kirigan. 'It shall be done. Excuse me.'
He hurries away. You look after him. You feel awkward to be alone with Aleksander after the loosening of your relationship. Because for some reason Ivan suddenly moves away- Oh, that sweet bastard. You will kill him for that later.
'Are you two always like that?' the Darkling asks. You force a smile.
'Only if we work on a project together,' you answer.
'So, what did you mean by "but only if we…"?' Kirigan asks.
'Spend most of our time on it,' you explain. 'If we are to complete it on time.'
General frowns. You see him looking you up and down. As if finally seeing you for the first time in a long time. Really see you.
'It's going to be exhausting,' he says and gazes at you with worry. 'And you already look really tired. Forgive me. I've been so busy that I didn't have time to make sure my best friend is having enough rest.'
'Don't apologise for my awful sleeping schedule,' you chuckle. 'It's my fault I can't rest until I finish something.'
Kirigan reaches out to you with a frown. He gently caresses the skin under your eyes. You shiver. He doesn't seem to notice.
'And now you're going to sleep even less, aren't you?' he asks and sighs. 'Maybe I should ask David to do it on his own, he's very skilled too after all, or ask someone else to do it with him. True, they may not be as effective, but they should do for the Winter Fete.'
'Aleksander,' you say softly. 'Don't worry about me. You'll always be my favourite reason to lose sleep.'
'The gloves are not for me,' General says, raising his eyebrows.
'I'm not going to make them because Alina needs them,' you say quietly. You stare at each other in silence for a moment. Finally, the Darklin realises he's still cupping your cheek. He lets his hand drop. You immediately are sad at the loss.
'I should go,' Kirigan says after clearing his throat. 'I promised Alina to explain something to her.'
Your heart clenches. You force a smile.
'I won't keep you,' you say. General nods at you and hurries away. You stare after him sadly. Ivan sends you a worried look and follows his leader.
'I shouldn't be jealous,' you whisper, tears in the corners of your eyes. 'You aren't even mine.'
'Did you say something?' David asks, reappearing at your side. You blink away the tears and turn to him with a smile.
'Just thinking out loud,' you say and clap your hands together. 'So! Want to bet she's not going to need them at all? The gloves?'
David thinks for a moment. He nods after a moment.
'Very well,' he agrees. 'The stakes?'
'The usual?' you ask, smirking.
'Good,' David says and looks at you with pretended menace. 'But you won't win this time.'
'We shall see,' you laugh and turn to your table. You sigh. You already have million ideas about the gloves. But which one is going to be the best?
'You're spending less time with the General lately,' David says casually.
'He's a busy man,' you answer nonchalantly. 'Even more with the Sun Summoner's arrival.'
Your friend is silent. You think he's dropped it.
'[Y/N],' he says suddenly seriously. 'I know we aren't as close as you are with General Kirigan. But I consider you my friend. So, if there's something bothering you, I want you to know you can come to me with it. Understand?'
You look at him with surprise. You've never seen such serious look in his eyes.
'Thank you, David,' you say, touched. He nods.
'Of course,' he says and returns to work. For a moment you consider venting to him. But no. It's your secret. No one can ever know it. Well, no one but Ivan. And possibly Fedyor.
You sigh quietly and focus on your work. After all, the Sun Summoner needs your help. You can't let her powers to be put to doubt. That's simply not acceptable.
*
It's the day of the Winter Fete. The gloves for Alina are ready. You and David take them and go to her room. Your friend knocks and you wait.
'Come in,' you hear Alina's voice. You two enter the room. The Sun Summoner is sitting by a table in a bathrobe. Next to her stands Genya, a Taylor. On the table are her things that help her do her 'magic'. She freezes seeing David. You two stop.
'Hi,' David greets them, waving his hand.
'Uh, this is David Kostyk,' Genya introduces him. 'Expert resident Fabrikator. Right next to [Y/N], of course.'
She sends you a nervous smile. You answer her with a tight one. You hate when people call Durasts and Alkemi Fabrikators. Your powers are completely different, they could learn the distinction.
'He created the blue light we use for crossing the Fold,' Genya explains to Alina.
'Yeah, the general had us make these for your demonstration this evening,' David says, walking quickly to the Sun Summoner. You follow him and he hands her the gloves.
'They're… lovely,' Genya says to David, as Alina puts one of them on. You and Starkov exchange an amused look.
'What do they do?' the Sun Summoner asks.
'They'll make it easier to split one beam… into two,' David explains, showing with his fingers.
'Your show of power will determine who remains our ally,' you add, as Alina creates a ball of light and quickly splits it into two. You watch how one flies a bit above the other and then re-joins it. Then the one ball disappears.
'They'll help enhance your performance,' David says.
'Ingenious,' Genya praises, while Alina takes off the glove. You hide a smirk. You know very well she says it to your fellow Durast.
The Sun Summoner creates another ball of light, now without the glove. She splits it just as easily into two. She repeats what she has done. David looks a bit awkward, while you grin, satisfied.
'I think I'll be all right on my own,' Alina says nervously, picking up the gloves. David clears his throat.
'Of course,' he says, taking the gloves for her. You smile smugly at him.
'Told you,' you say.
'I know, I know,' he murmurs and goes to the door. You wink at the girls and follow him.
'See you at the fete!' Genya calls after you (*cough* David *cough). Your friend stops and looks at her. He tilts his head, then closes the door behind you two.
'Not a word,' he murmurs.
'About?' you ask teasingly, as you walk away. 'Genya or the gloves?'
'Both,' David answers. 'Yes, you won, I will keep the promise of the bet. And not a word about Genya.'
'David, it's obvious she likes you,' you say. The Durast flusters and hurries away. You laugh.
'I guess that means I have to tell General about Alina not needing the gloves?' you call after him. He doesn't answer. You cackle and go to Aleksander's chambers. You find him drinking tea and hovering over the map. He notices you immediately, though.
'[Y/N],' he greets you with a warm smile. 'How did Alina like her gloves?'
'It's good to see you, too,' you say, raising your eyebrows. Kirigan chuckles and walks to you. You have to look up to meet his eyes.
'Forgive me,' he apologises. 'I'm just-'
'Nervous?' you finish. 'I know. And Alina doesn't need them. She was able to focus and split light without the gloves. She's going to be perfectly fine.'
Aleksander's smile becomes a bit forced. You frown.
'I see,' he says and nods. 'That's good. They were only a safeguard, really. In case of nerves. But I'm sorry you had to spend so much time on them. And Mr Kostyk.'
'It wasn't that bad,' you say and grin. 'Besides, I can now tease David about a thing or two.'
Kirigan chuckles. He looks at you but doesn't say a word. You become uncomfortable.
'I imagine there are still some preparations for you,' you say. 'I'll leave you to it.'
'See you at the fete,' Aleksander says. You smile at him and leave. Outside you can't help but compare the tone of his voice to Genya's when she said the same words. Hers were warmer and… filled with something. It hurts.
You shake those thoughts away and go prepare for the fete. When you're ready you head there, as it's already started. And everything is very lovely and all goes well. Including Alina's performance. But when you see her in black kefta… you barely manage to watch the show until the end.
When all the performances are finished, you sneak out. You hate so many people in one place. You walk outside and exhale shakily. The winter's air makes you shiver but only slightly. You have your warm kefta on.
'Something troubling you?' you hear a familiar voice. You turn around, surprised.
'Baghra,' you greet your old teacher. 'I rarely see you outside your hut.'
'I do get out of it sometimes,' she says, walking to you. 'And I wanted to see how the Sun Summoner would do. Not bad. Not bad at all.'
'She was amazing,' you say quietly and look away. Baghra observes you closely.
'Tell me, then,' she says. 'What's troubling you?'
You've always liked her. She saw that you were more than just a mere Durast. She saw it and helped you to see that, too. You're not going to tell her everything, but you may confide in her a bit.
'I have a hopeless crush on someone I have no chance with,' you admit, smiling sadly at her. 'I don't think you can do much about it. Or anyone, for that matter.'
Baghra stares at you intensely. You shiver. It's the same look Kirigan gives you sometimes.
'He's always known how to charm women,' she says wistfully.
'You know-' you start, startled.
'Of course, I do,' Baghra scoffs. 'Others may not see it, but I've watched you ever since the Sun Summoner showed up. You're fading. It has to stop.'
'If only it was that easy,' you say. Baghra stares at you sternly. But then her look softens.
'Run,' she says. You look at her, surprised.
'I'm sorry?' you ask. 'From what?'
'From him,' Baghra answers. 'While he's busy with her. For now, he fails to see- Never mind what. But when he does see it… you will never escape.'
'Why would I want to?' you ask, frowning. Baghra grabs your wrist. Tightly.
'Because he's not who he seems to be,' she says urgently. 'He hides behind half-truths and manipulations. He's… He… He doesn't want the same as others. He has other plans. Plans that are going to doom us all. He wants to finish what he's started long ago. With the Fold. Run from it while you can.'
She looks at you almost pleadingly. You stare back at her. You think she's expected disbelief, shock or panic from you at those words. But you don't even blink. Her hold on you loosens.
'He told you?' she asks, stunned. You shake your head.
'He didn't have to,' you say and look away. 'My powers still grow stronger every day. Even more so when I started to spend more time with him. One day I realised… I can tell how old some metals are when I feel into them. Including magnesium in his bones, muscles… Once, for the fun of it, I focused on his.'
If not for the dark, you would see Baghra's face going white. You twist your fingers.
'Luckily he was busy with something else, so he didn't see my shocked look,' you say and look at Baghra. 'I… figured out the rest. Who he is.'
'And you didn't give him away?' Baghra asks. 'Nor run away? Nor push him away?'
'Why would I do such a thing?' you ask, frowning. 'He's my friend. I could never betray him.'
The old woman stares at you. She sighs sadly.
'He doesn't deserve you,' she says and looks at you. 'Run. I mean it. Save yourself.'
'Didn't you hear me?' you ask and give her a hard look. 'I could never betray him.'
Baghra looks at you, stunned. You turn around and walk back inside. The old woman stares after you sadly. She's afraid how this will end for you.
*
You don't want to be on the fete any longer. You hurry past the guests, avoiding looking at anyone. But someone spots you anyway and grabs your arm.
'What's wrong?' Ivan asks you, looking at you with worry. You smile slightly.
'I'm just tired,' you say, not exactly lying. 'I've had busy days lately. And the crowd is not helping me.'
'Do you need anything?' Ivan asks. You smile at him and squeeze his hand on your arm.
'No, but thank you,' you say. 'It means a lot you care.'
'Don't let anyone know, my reputation would be ruined,' Ivan says, a slight smirk on his lips.
'Oh, no, we wouldn't want the reputation of Ivan the Grumpy to be ruined,' you say in mock horror. Ivan chuckles. You chuckle, too, and walk away. But almost immediately you bump into shocked Alina and amused Fedyor.
'Was that Ivan… laughing?' the Sun Summoner asks and looks at you with wonder. 'Are you the Ivan whisperer?'
'I'm not,' you snort.
'But he does have a soft spot for her,' Fedyor confirms. Alina looks at you with interest.
'What did you do?' she asks.
'I aggressively poked a person who tried to kill General with a dagger,' you answer. Alina's eyes go wide.
'You… stabbed someone?' she asks with disbelief.
'Aggressively poked them,' you correct her and walk past them.
'Better not to make you angry, then,' you hear her murmur behind your back, still in shock. You smile, amused, and leave the party.
You head toward a hidden chamber. Your talk with Baghra filled you with determination. Maybe you can't have the one you want. But it doesn't mean others like you have to suffer. So, you head toward the place you know Genya Saffin is going to be.
You open the secret door and are baffled by the sight in front of you. A man in the guard's uniform is about to kill Alina's double. You quickly focus on the knife in his hand and force it out of it. The man gasps and turns around. You glare at him.
'Surrender now,' you order.
'Never,' the man spats and throws Marie who's Alina's double to the side. The girl yelps and the man throws himself at you. You may have not trained with Botkin, but after the incident with poison, Ivan gave you a few lessons. You manage to hit and kick the man. He hits the mirror and falls with it.
'Guards!' Marie yells. Genya rushes in hearing her scream.
'What is-?' she starts and stops, stunned. At the same moment the man fires his pistol at you. You manage to change the course of the bullet, but Genya's sudden appearance deconcentrates you enough to make it graze your arm. You grit your teeth and focus on the iron in the man's body. He groans in pain.
'Guards!' Genya calls. A moment later four guards burst in and apprehend the assassin.
'Marie, are you alright?' Genya asks, hurrying to the Inferni.
'Yes,' the girl confirms and looks at you with wide eyes. 'Thank you.'
You nod at her. You glance at the fake guard.
'I'll inform General,' you say and walk out of the room. You find out Aleksander was seen heading to his chambers with Alina. Your heart breaks at that, but there's no time for jealousy. You reach Kirigan's chambers and knock urgently. Then again. And again. Only then Aleksander finally opens the door. Smiling and happy. No, ignore that [Y/N].
'What is it?' he asks, looking around.
'Marie was attacked in the fitting room,' you explain. 'I showed up at the last moment to save her. Alina was the target. We have the would-be-assassin in the custody.'
Aleksander glances behind himself. Then, he frowns and looks at you.
'You saved her?' he asks. 'Why were you there in the first place?'
'I needed to speak to Genya,' you answer. 'And I used my powers to pull away the knife from his hand. And hit him. Kicked him in the mirror. Guards showed up. The end.'
He opens his mouth to say something, but freezes. He reaches out to you and gently touches your arm.
'You're hurt,' he says. You shake your head.
'It's just a graze,' you say. Aleksander grabs your other arm tightly. He glares at you.
'Go to a Healer, now,' he hisses. 'Understood? I will go to the prisoner.'
'I'm fine,' you say, a bit surprised. General touches your wound. You hiss in pain. He glares at you.
'This is not fine,' he says. 'Go and get a Healer. I know very well you care little about your well-being, but I care a lot, so go and have someone look at it. Understand?'
'Yes,' you murmur. Kirigan's grip loosens a bit.
'Good,' he says and caresses your cheek. 'I don't like seeing you hurt.'
You nod. For a moment you stare at each other. Aleksander is the first to shake off.
'Go,' he says and disappears in his chambers, closing the door. You sigh and turn around. You go to find a Healer, shaking your head. But… it felt nice to see him worried so much.
*
The assassin was working together with three rouges from Ketterdam. Well, he arrived with them and was supposed to work with them, but betrayed them and tried to kill Alina, while they were tasked to bring her to Kerch. But they figured it out and sent him on Marie instead. And apparently, they took Starkov. Because they're gone and she is nowhere to be found as well.
Worried how Aleksander is taking it, you knock on the door to his chambers. Hearing the invitation, you walk in. He's working behind his desk.
'[Y/N],' he says, sounding tired. 'How is your wound?'
'Healed,' you answer, walking slowly to him. 'A Healer fixed me right up.'
'I'm glad,' Kirigan says, forcing a smile. You look at him with worry.
'Are you going to look for her?' you guess. 'Alina.'
'Yes,' Aleksander confirms, nodding. 'At sundown, I'm leading a team to pursue the criminals who took Miss Starkov.'
'I see,' you say quietly. 'Anything I can do to help?'
'No, I-' Kirigan starts but stops, frowning. You look at him with interest.
'There is,' you guess. 'What is it?'
'I was going to ask David,' Aleksander says after a moment, not looking at you. 'But I trust you more. And your abilities.'
'How can I help?' you ask, straightening your back. But Kirigan is silent. You frown.
'Aleksander?' you ask. 'What is it?'
'I don't want you to-' he says and cuts himself off. 'You mean a lot to me.'
'And you to me,' you say, confused. 'Are you worried I will get hurt?'
'No,' Kirigan denies. 'I mean, that too, but… Doesn't matter. I will ask David.'
You frown. You cross your arms.
'Tell me,' you demand. But he's stubbornly silent. You walk to him and cup his cheek. You force him to look at you.
'You just said you trust me,' you say. 'It doesn't look like that. But you really can. I mean, I know you're much older than you look like and yet I haven't told anyone about it.'
Aleksander tenses. He looks at you with wide eyes.
'What?' he asks, shocked. You bite your inner cheek.
'For some time… I've been able to know how old are metals,' you explain. 'Including magnesium in human body. And… magnesium in your bones, for example, is… old. Really old.'
Kirigan's face goes pale. He leans on the back of the chair.
'How long?' he asks. You shrug.
'Don't ask me specific date, because I don't know,' you answer. 'But it began after I started spending more time with you. Using more power during working on the skiff.'
'And you didn't tell anyone?' Aleksander asks with disbelief.
'Why would I?' you ask. Kirigan is stunned to see a real confusion on your face. His heart aches.
'Surely you know what that means,' he says. 'Who I am.'
'My best friend,' you say strongly. 'And my General, who desperately tries to make sure Grisha are safe. That's all that matters to me.'
Aleksander slowly stands up. He cups your cheek, tears glistening in his eyes.
'You have no idea how much it means to me,' he says. You touch his hand on your cheek.
'Let me come with you,' you plead. 'Whatever it is you need a Durast for, I'll do it. For Grisha. For you.'
General smiles softly. He lets go of your face.
'Very well,' he agrees. 'I'll explain everything I need from you after we find Alina.'
You nod, agreeing on that. You turn to leave. But your friend grabs your arm. You look at him, curious.
'I don't want you to forget you're not a fighter,' he says. 'You saved Marie, yes. And me once as well.'
'Twice,' you correct him. Aleksander smiles, amused.
'Yes, twice,' he concedes. 'But you're still not a fighter. So, if I tell you to stay back, you do it. If I tell you to hide, you do it. Understand?'
'Yes, General,' you answer seriously. Kirigan rolls his eyes.
'Get ready,' he says. You nod and leave. You get ready and at sundown you meet with Aleksander, Zoya, Ivan and Polina, an Inferni. Three Grisha are surprised by your presence.
'[Y/N]?' Zoya asks. 'You're coming with us?'
'I'll need her for what comes next,' Aleksander explains, opening the door to his coach. You all get inside.
'Well, at least we know that if someone is going to kill General, [Y/N] will aggressively poke them with a dagger,' Ivan says. Zoya and Polina snort. Kirigan smiles in amusement. You glare at him.
'Don't think I won't,' you say and turn to look out of the window. Your heart is beating fast as you set off. You can feel everything is about to change once you find Alina. Maybe even the whole world.

Shadows and Scars
Chapter 26
Tumblr media
Two chapters in two days?!?! I’m as surprised as you are. I forgot how fun it was to write this series, and hopefully I’ll get more time to write during break. I hope you enjoy this chapter! I know I’m enjoying where this story is going. 😉
Tumblr media
Enjoy!
Trigger warnings: it’s an interrogation and death so there’s that, attempted kidnapping?/ non con? It’s a few men being grabby, and death and violence.
Never beta read so all mistakes are my own, and formatted on my phone so hopefully the formatting isn’t screwed up.

Aleksander’s POV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Have they talked?” He asked, evenly, striding into the dungeons.
“A lot of lies. But Volkov hasn’t said a word. Ivan’s with them.” Zoya responded.
The two men were both chained to heavy wooden chairs in the middle of the large room. The shooter seems to look exhausted, sweat clinging to his whole body and head hunched over. Volkov, on the other hand, was just smiling maniacally.
“I’ve been swindled. Hoodwinked.” The shooter pleaded. Volkov snorted and shook his head at that.
“My guards told me that they caught you fleeing the scene of the crime.” He accused.
“Yes, I followed them.” He turned his head to look at the man next to him. “All of them, but-“
“Followed whom?” His voice dropped lower.
“Him, and these people. They come from the other side of the fold. From the start, they seemed, just a bit off to me, so when they left our stage at the fete, I followed them to see what they were up to.” He breathed heavily to catch his breath. “And at the time that I walked into that room, they were gone and…” He huffed a nervous laugh. “Saints, it was unspeakable. So- so I ran-“
“How much of that is true?” He demanded, making eye contact with Ivan.
“He did cross the fold with the others. The rest were lies.” Ivan said as he gave a menacing stare to the shooter.
“What?” The shooter squirmed in his seat nervously. “That’s- No-“
“Your heart gives you away.” Volkov said from next to him. Watching the entire scene with subdued interest.
Aleksander stiffened at the sound of his voice. This is the man you thought was so important? So admirable? He’d deal with him later.
“Do you know we keep records of everyone who crosses the fold?” He said evenly.
The man in the seat opened his mouth to talk, but Aleksander spoke over him. “For the winter fete, we had ambassadors from Kerch, Novyi Zem, the Wandering Isle, but you didn’t pass with them, did you? No. You and your crew, you have another way.” He spat the word crew out venomously.
“I don’t know what you mean. I-“ The man stuttered.
“He does.” Ivan said simply.
“I’m an entertainer!” The man shouted desperately. “Oskar. Oskar Krepkov.”
He didn’t even need to look at Ivan to know the man was lying. It was a trick he had plenty of time to master over the centuries.
With one smooth movement, he strode over and ripped up the sleeve of the man’s shirt. There on his shaking wrist were fifteen tally marks.
“Well.” He said slowly. “This is certainly entertaining. You are the conductor.” He moved his face closer to the conductor’s as he spoke. “Arken Visser, are you not?” His voice became dangerously low as gripped his wrist tighter before shoving himself off of him.
“You smuggle Grisha out of MY PALACE!” He whipped around and yelled at him. “You help them abandon the war effort.”
Arlen’s face grew serious as he dropped his act. “No. I deal in legal indentures, I don’t mess with Grisha.”
“Lie.” Ivan said lazily.
“I don’t need him to tell me.” He spoke mockingly. “I had a spy. Nina Zenik. Ring any bells?”
Arken’s face morphed into an angry scowl. “Nina?”
“Last report we had from her was that she’d be crossing the Fold with the conductor and three rogues from Ketterdam.”
Arken’s face fell as he knew there was no way to talk himself out of this.
“What their mission was, she didn’t know. She was waiting to meet you all. Now poor Nina.. has not been heard from since. Might that have something to do with you, Mr. Visser?”
“No.” He breathed out instantly. “I don’t!” He looked at Ivan to confirm what he had said, which he did with a small shrug.
“See? I don’t know what happened.”
“My guess,” Aleksander started. “You struck a deal with these three thieves to kidnap Alina Starkov. But..” he leaned towards him slowly. “You have a stronger relationship with a certain West Ravkan general who has notions of ruling his own country.” With a small tap on Ivan’s shoulder, the man walked away quickly and Zoya followed without hesitation.
“So long as the fold separates him from us. So you made another deal. You put on a disguise. And you played at being assassin.”
“That’s right.” Arken said lowly. “The prize to bring her back to Ketterdam was a million, split four ways. But Zlatan offered me the same number.. to kill her. So.. give me half that. I’ll get revenge for you, I can get close to Zlatan.”
“No.” Aleksander said quietly. “I think I’ll handle that myself.” And with one smooth flick of his hands, the shadows that inhabited the dank cellar began to move and slithered towards him. He begged for his life of course. They always did, but that never changed the outcome.
Aleksander watched with a sick satisfaction as they crawled onto the man like snakes and began to force their way in his mouth and ears.
“Now. Mr. Volkov.” He spoke loudly over the sound of Arken gagged and choking on the shadows that went deeper and deeper into his throat and head. “I believe we have much to talk about.”
—————
Y/n’s POV
—————
“So are we just going to ignore the light seeping out of the trunk or…” Jesper gave a weird face as the four of you watched light spill through the locked trunk.
Kaz just rolled his eyes at him as a slight click was heard.
You all held your breath as the trunk cover slowly lifted and Alina climbed out quickly.
Jesper reached for his gun, but Alina wasn’t paying attention to him. Her eyes seemed you out, worry etched on her face as she took you in.
“We don’t want any trouble.” Jesper placatingly held out his free hand.
“Neither do I, so we’ll just be on our way. Y/n get behind me.” She whispered seriously.
“Let’s just all calm down-“ You were interrupted by the sound of Kaz’s cane hitting the carriage to block her escape.
“Clearly you both want out of East Ravka.” Jesper and the two others stayed still as Alina slowly stepped in front of you. “But we can help you.”
Inej nodded enthusiastically as Hesper continued. “We have a secure route through the Fold.”
“We’re fine. We prefer to travel alone.” Alina gave you another worried look before turning back to face the crows.
“Y/n you know Ruslan trusted us, you can too.” Jesper pleaded, turning his attention to you.
“I’m sorry,” you sighed sadly. “I can’t get caught again. I can’t go back there, neither of us can.” Your cane brushed against your leg as you gripped it tightly with both hands. “You need to let us go.”
“Don’t be rash, if you stick with us, everybody gets what they want.”
“We are not being anyone’s captive ever again.” Alina hissed out. “So step aside and let us pass.”
“I’m afraid we can’t let that happen.” Kaz finally spoke up, glaring at Alina in what seemed to be his usual fashion.
Before you could move, a burst of light flashed from Alina’s hands into Jesper, blinding him and Kaz. As the light disappeared, you noticed Inej covering her eyes before looking at Alina with reverence and holding her hands up in surrender.
“Let’s go.” Alina said, grabbing your arm and dragging you away from the carriage.
“Shit!” Your leg wobbled, unused to being without your brace as you hopped to catch up to her pace. “Alina I can’t run.” You heaved out, gritting your teeth in pain as the two of you ducked into an open alleyway.
“What do you mean? Where’s your brace?” She frantically whispered.
“It’s too noticeable.” You breathed heavily, as Alina stuck her head out of the alley and looked for the crows.
“We need to go. Now.” She whispered urgently. Taking you by the arms again, gentler than before. “Walk as fast as you can.” She led you out of the street and your eyes brightened as you noticed a stall selling cloaks.
“Wait.” Your coins dangled in your pocket as you hurriedly pulled them out and slammed them on the table. “We’ll take two of the black ones.” Alina gave you a small smile as she grabbed what you had paid for and wrapped one of the heavy cloaks around your shoulders.
“Good thinking.”
You discreetly pointed out Jesper ahead of the two of you, before taking her down another street corner. “This way.”
“Are you ok?” Alina blurted out.
You shrugged as the two of you continued slowly towards the outskirts of the town.
“I’ve been better. I’m not sure that treason is a good look on me.” You joked, huffing out a grunt of pain and trying to disguise it as a laugh.
“Why did you run?” Alina asked, securing her own cloak on and pulling up the hood.
“I haven’t been completely honest with you Alina.” You said softly. “I’m not just part of the General’s guard.” You paused as the two of you stopped when your breathing became too labored.
You squeezed your eyes shut before continuing. “I’m his whore.” You said sadly, trying to ignore Alina’s look of betrayal.
“I don’t know what he did to me, or why me, but somehow he can control my body and-“ You blinked away tears as you continued. “But that’s not the point. He has plans for you. And knowing him they can’t be good, I wanted to look for you, but I needed to get out. To be able to think clearly without him pulling the strings.”
“Is he?” Alina’s eyes widened as she backed away from you. “Is he still pulling the strings?”
You shook your head frantically as you noticed a small tear fall down her cheek. “No. I can’t feel him. Not anymore. Baghra said that the further I am from him the more control I have.”
“Please.” You begged, grabbing her hands tightly. “We need to go. If he finds us…” Your mind didn’t even want to finish the sentence as Alina nodded. Part of you knew he could have been good to you. But that part was the one that became complacent. That fell to his influence. That forgot what kind of a man he really was. What he had done to Anya. To Ruslan.
“Y/n.” Alina cupped your face with her hand and you blinked in surprise at the sudden warmth. “I won’t let him get us.” You briefly noted that her pupils dilated as she looked at you and you blushed at your close proximity. “I won’t let him hurt you.”
The two of you were shocked back into your surroundings as a man hobbled slowly towards your alcove and puked on the side of the street.
“Hey! Hey you!” He shouted, pointing to Alina. “So far from Shu Han, aren’t you?”
“We should go.” You said, forcing out a fake smile at the man before turning to head down the street.
You froze as the First army man grabbed Alina by the wrist and spun her back to face him. “Why don’t you come inside? You can bring your friend too.” He leered at her before dragging her towards the door.
Without thinking, you swung your wooden cane at his leg, as Alina punched him in the jaw.
“Hurry!” You caught yourself from saying her name as you gripped your cane like a bat as two more First army soldiers came to their friend’s defense.
Your eyes widened as one of them shoved Alina into the wall and tried to hit her head on the hard surface.
“She’s got some fight in her yeah?” The other man laughed at you as your heart beat rapidly in your chest. “We’ll at least you can’t run away.” He pulled up his trousers with a lazy smile before quickly lunging at you.
“Leave us alone!” You shouted, swinging at him with your cane, but missing as he jumped back to dodge it.
“I’m going to have fun watching you try to crawl away when I-“ You saw red as a bird launched itself at the man’s head, knocking him back with more force than you thought was possible for such a small thing.
He hit the ground with a dull thud as the man you attacked Alina screamed in agony as she shined her light into his eyes.
“Stop! After them!”
“Saints. We need to get out of this town now.” You said, grabbing Alina’s warm hands and letting her pull you away from the scene.
Perhaps if you had stopped to actually look at the bird that laid next to your attacker's head, you’d have noticed the sizable bullet hole through its eye.
