Was Natasha a kid when she met Bucky?
It’s a widespread misconception outside of winterwidow fandom that Bucky and Natasha have known each other since she was a kid. I’ve seen a handful of people object to their relationship for this reason or (sometimes in a humorous manner) comment on how weird it is. And I'd have to agree with them. Bucky dating Natasha despite having trained her since she was a child would have been utterly inappropriate, if not immoral and disgusting. However, the assumption is not only incorrect but also fundamentally impossible.
Let’s go back to the beginning to clarify why that assumption is fundamentally impossible. Different universes equal different realities, and different realities equal different characters. Sometimes characters' counterparts across multiple realities only differ in details, not the basics. MCU characters have a similar correlation with their What If counterparts but not comics’ ones, which is a grave mistake cinematic fans make. I believe that’s why we have this absurd assumption as well, from someone thinking that 616 Black Widow and Winter Soldier are the same age as their more famous counterparts.
MCU’s Natasha Romanoff was born in 1984, and Bucky – 1917. Thus, an adult-kid dynamic is plausible. If we consider cryostasis, Bucky was still pushing 30 when Natasha was born. The situation, however, is significantly different for their 616 counterparts. Let’s start with Earth 616’s Bucky Barnes, who was born in 1925, making him nearly a decade younger than the cinematic one. But that isn’t what disproves the aforementioned belief. What disproves it is that Earth 616’s Natasha Romanoff was born around 1928, making her 56 years older than her cinematic counterpart and just 3 years younger than 616 Bucky. You will find this information on the following page from Black Widow: Deadly Origin, a 2009–2010 graphic novel (which I will be using as a basis today):
Tumblr media
This alone debunks the adult/child misconception, but I want to go one step further and discuss the timeline of Natasha's time in the Red Room and the early years of the Winter Soldier.
At the young age of 20, Bucky Barnes "died" alongside Captain America in late 1945, in last days of the war. The Russian submarine discovered Bucky's preserved body after the war while hoping to retrieve Captain America’s remains. And with that, the Winter Soldier story began, along with his role as a super soldier trainer at the Red Room for Department X.
Now, one might say, "Ana, if he was 20, Natasha was 17, which is still kind of wrong, no?". My answer is yes; it would’ve been rather inappropriate. "Would’ve been" because there’s a catch: Natasha wasn’t part of the Red Room when he joined.
I know what you’re thinking: What the fuck, wasn’t she...? Didn’t she…? So let me explain that one from the beginning.
Natasha Romanoff, then 10 years old, was brought to the Red Room in 1938 by her father figure, Ivan Petrovich (a terrible piece of shit about whom I'll write a blog), Taras Romanov, and Joseph Stalin himself. After her trainer, Wolverine, killed Taras in 1940, she let Wolverine go, fled into the woods, and was found three months later by Ivan, possibly going back under his care, which can be seen below:
Tumblr media
She returned to the Red Room only at the age of 28, ironically enough, becauseof Ivan, which is depicted on the following page:
Tumblr media
There, we find a collapsed building with a bleeding Ivan and a sobbing Natasha, who have been approached by …. *DRUM ROLL* ….  the Winter Soldier, who has been sent by his superiors. They were both offered the super soldier serum that would save Ivan in exchange for their newfound loyalty, which Natasha accepted despite Ivan's protests.
Here we are, then: Natasha, 28, meets the Winter Soldier, roughly 31, who’ll soon be her lover and her trainer. Two adult people who met when they were both adults. And with that, we conclude our blog, disproving the infamous “she was a kid when they met!” argument.
Thanks for reading my blog. If you have questions or have found a mistake, let me know. I'll be happy to answer and discuss <3

The fact that people are trying to play off the real reason they ship mcu bucky and yelena as they would be cute together when in reality they just view yelena as a replacement widow for their WinterWidow ship
THEY HAVE HAD ZERO INTERACTIONS
And dont act like that isnt your actual reason for shipping them because it is

Still so mad at Marvel for teasing us with Clintasha, Romangers and WinterWidow and instead giving us Brutasha.
I hate that they’re going to make Yelena and Bucky a thing.

It’s so annoying when there’s a character you like with a really popular canon ship that you don’t like at all, because that means it will be literally inescapable

Peter finally got me on this place so here’s a bit about me suppose
Hi I’m Vespera “Vera” Volkov, my pronouns are she/her, I’m fifteen years old and I’m a Black Widow, you might know my older sisters Yelena and Natasha, older brother Bucky(@white-wolf-actually), younger brother Peter(@peterparkermans), other big sister Nev(@a-simpfortessa-lesbriean), my Мама Hela(@goddessof-death), or my girlfriend MJ(@midtown-braincell-holder). I’m the vigilante and now Avenger known as the Winter Widow, as well as a SHIELD consultant(did not know they gave me a title?)
I am fully aware that WinterWidow is Natasha and James’ ship name, but it was what the Red Room was going to call me post-graduation, and I decided it’s fucking hilarious now.
Oh apparently I’m supposed to add that I almost killed Tony Stark the first time I met him?

Happy Reading Bingo month! In a weird turn of events, I'm crushing the reading part of this challenge and failing at the updating part of it, so I guess I'll go with monthly updates this summer. I'm a grand ten books into this (two ahead of my goal for the month), so I'm pretty excited! Predictably, my reading has been all over the map, but I've been tackling NetGalley and series books like I planned. The rereads and graphic novels were hands down my favorites this month. (I’ve also managed to hit zero bingos so far, so my anti-bingo super power is still in effect.)
Black Tide by K.C. Jones (published this year) There's probably no kind way of saying I really hated this. I was hoping for creepy water monsters and got discount aliens instead, plus a couple of main characters I fervently hoped would be eaten. 2/5 The Secret Place by Tana French (mystery/thriller) I'm absolutely in love with The Dublin Murder Squad and French's beautiful prose, but this wasn't one of my favorites in the series. Loved the characters, but the chapters in the past really dragged at the pace. 3/5 Lucky Girl, How I Became A Horror Writer: A Krampus Story by M. Rickert (holiday/season) This has no business being a novella or calling itself a Krampus story. There are the bones of two good stories here that never adequately come together or are fleshed out to any satisfaction. 3/5 The Night Masquerade by Nnedi Okorafor (author of color) I should have stopped this series after the first book. For as much as I adored Binti, the rest is far too much science fiction and war story for me. 3/5 Winter Soldier: The Complete Collection by Ed Brubaker (graphic novel) The first section of this graphic novel is absolutely bonkers with killer gorillas and Doctor Doom being a total diva, but it gets better from there. Love the way Brubaker writes Bucky, and this is peak WinterWidow content. 4/5 How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff (debut novel) Did I mention I hate war stories? There was almost no chance I was going to like this, but the all-tell/no-show narration style really didn't work for me. Sweet bits of magical realism though. 2/5 Bone Gap by Laura Ruby (disability/mental illness) I read this about five years ago, but despite wanting more from it, the story really stuck with me. I loved it a lot more on a second read, and while I still find the villain underwhelming, it's a quiet, thoughtful, slightly magical tale with great main characters. 4/5 Wayward Witch by Zoraida Córdova (ownvoices) This was my least favorite of the Brooklyn Brujas series, but that's mostly due to an aversion to high fantasy worlds and faeries. It doesn't really stand out from others of its kind. 3/5 A Curse of Roses by Diana Pinguicha (indie/small press) What the hell possessed me to request a historical fantasy? Here for the wlw romance. Not here for the strong religious themes and the idea that women need to forgive their abusers. 2/5 Runaways, Vol. 1: Find Your Way Home by Rainbow Rowell (has a cat in it) I didn't read the original Runaways series, but I loved this immediately. Bright, pretty art, fantastic cast of characters, and a deft hand at storytelling. Lots of cats that may or may not have psychic powers. 4/5

As we talk about how much I want Ed to return and give Winterwidow the Justice they deserve, let’s also not forget how dirty Marvel did both Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting, who created the Winter Soldier and brought Bucky Barnes’s character back to life.
Remember this?
Tumblr media
Or those?
“When I see ads for [The Falcon and The Winter Soldier], it actually makes me feel sick to my stomach.”
“When I work with people I try to give them the best deal possible. And if something ends up being a bigger thing I try to actually adjust their deal so they can take part in that too.”
“There’s nothing preventing anyone at marvel from looking over how much the winter soldier has been used in all this stuff and calling me and steve epting and saying, ‘you know what, we’re going to try to adjust the standard thing so you guys feel good about this.'”
“I have made more on sag residuals than I have made on creating the character for my one line that got cut.”
“it’s just weird that they’re so ungenerous to me. It’s especially weird because a lot of them are friends of mine. Or people that I thought were friends of mine.”
“There is a corporate mentality. Right now someone inside marvel publishing somewhere is watching this and laughing that I think I got ripped off. There are people that think it’s funny that I’m unhappy about it. I know for a fact because I’ve watched them be that way about other people in person.”
“I look at those credits and there’s all these other executive producers [of] people who were just at the publishing level who had nothing to do with it. I know how much that ep credit actually makes you in a tv show at disney. These people have made so much money on stuff that steve and I did.”

1, 2, 4, 5, 14 for salty asks?
1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?
Ehh, this one’s hard because I’ve turned into such a multishipper? Honestly, I’m fine with most pairings in all of my fandoms, but I don’t understand Steve/Tony at all.
2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs that you only BrOTP?
Steve and Darcy, for sure, but I can’t think of any from Agents of SHIELD. Everyone is just so shippable!
4. Do you have a NOTP in your fandom? Is it a popular OTP?
Clint*sha and Winterw*dow are always the big ones that everyone seems to ship that I just can’t handle. Also, Kared*vil.
5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?
It’s always hard to be in a fandom where a lot of people ship something you don’t/have vastly different headcanons about a ship or flat out hate a ship that you love, but honestly no? I try to respect everyone’s individual opinions even if I don’t share them. I can scroll on by or block if I need to.
14. Unpopular opinion about your fandom?
FitzSimmons aren’t the greatest thing to come out of canon, Yo-Yo is wildly under-appreciated, and I see a bunch of hypocritical bullshit about what ships are/aren’t okay like every day and it’s annoying AF.
