I’d rather be friends with people who are flawed yet kind people over people who are outwardly mean in the guise of ‘owning it’

After seeing some of @hydesjackiespuddinpop 's posts and having a chat with them, I realized that there is a pattern in fandoms where people tend to prefer the "bitchy" friend over the more down-to-earth "normal" friend. It is everywhere, all over teen shows especially. Rory and Paris, Serena and Blair, Summer and Marissa, Donna and Jackie... (Maddy and Cassie from Euphoria almost fall into this category but not quite because Maddy actually never did anything as bad to Cassie as she did to her.)
But the thing is that if you met these people in real life, you would run the opposite direction. Who would you prefer to be your boss- someone who refers to you as a number because she can't even be bothered learning your name, criticizes anything you do because nothing is ever good enough and overall creates a hostile and toxic atmosphere, or someone nice, friendly and down to earth?
Who would you rather be friends with- someone who looks down on you because you're not from the same social class and wants to make you her minion (aka slave) or someone who doesn't look at money and class and is nice to everyone?
Would you rather hang out with someone who constantly criticizes your looks and bosses you around or someone chill and down-to-earth?
Yes, I know these characters are entertaining and it's fun to watch them "drag" and "own" people but come on. And I know that if someone is generally a bad person, it stands out when they do something good once in a while, so that's why people tend to remember their good deeds more than of someone who is generally a good person. But still, acknowledge that in real life you wouldn't want to come anywhere near them. And while yes, Rory, Serena, Marissa and Donna made mistakes, they always tried to be good people instead of being just straight up mean.

On that note, can you imagine how INSANE the media circus would be if it did come out publicly that Chuck and Blair illegally backdated their marriage certificate and the case against them was actually re-opened? Especially in 2023, at a time when anti-billionaire “eat the rich” sentiment has become very mainstream, and true crime is one of the most popular and profitable genres of entertainment?
Like, the events of season six happen so fast that we don’t really get to appreciate just how wild they are from the outside looking in. Imagine if Michael Bloomberg or pre-presidency Donald Trump died in a car crash, and their then-teenage progeny took over their real estate empires. Everyone just gets used to the idea of a little boy real estate mogul, I guess, and a few years pass, and then - surprise! They were faking their death all along!! Yes there was a funeral, yes they were legally declared dead, but who cares! They’re back baby, and ready to go back to being the same shitbags they were before!
Except, a mere handful of months later, they’re dead again - this time having gone careening off the side of one of their company’s most famous buildings (imagine if Donald Trump died falling off of Trump Tower lmaoooo). Did they fake it again? Was it foul play? By the time rumors start to swirl of the alleged involvement of their recently deposed nepotism baby, the cops close the case and rule it an accident. Their heir, still barely an adult, retakes the reigns of leadership - newly married, a detail no one realizes is suspicious because they likely have no idea that the spouse was at the scene of the crime.
Years pass. YouTubers and online conspiracy theorists periodically bring up the case, but the public at large once again more or less accepts the public narrative. Another piece of shit real-estate mogul gets elected president, and the attitude of the general public towards the uber wealthy turns increasingly hostile. Then there’s 2020, and 2021, and 2022, and- And then. “Billionaire boy and family linked to father’s mysterious death after discovery of faked marriage license”.
Even though we, the audience, knows Chuck didn’t actually kill his father, do you think in a world where this was an actual case involving actual public figures anyone would believe that? The coverup is so ridiculously suspicious that the general public almost definitely assumes they really did do the crime.
And consider the players in this case - a terrible billionaire who died a deliciously ironic death, his somehow worse son who in a post-#MeToo world is already a PR nightmare waiting to happen, and the ex-princess of Monaco (?!) who just so happens to already be tabloid fodder. If they get especially unlucky, Dan (a pretty famous novelist, at least according to the reboot), Serena (a 2000s era “it girl” and semi-celebrity), and Nate (an ex-NYC mayoral candidate, media mogul, and in universe Kennedy equivalent) might just find themselves implicated too - or at least forced to testify - given they were at the very much in public wedding where any rando could have snapped a picture.
There is just soooo much fucked up entertainment value in a case like this I can’t imagine it being anything less than a public fucking spectacle, and not the kind Chuck or Blair could just shake off. I genuinely do not know how they could absolve themselves in the court of public opinion if it actually went to trial, even if they managed to prevail legally.
Oh my god. Okay well, first of all, I really want the fake Serial podcast that unpacks all of this lol. Someone should make that lmao.
"little boy real estate mogul" took me out lololololol
also like...faking your death is a crime right??? how was Bart just able to re-enter society so easily??? did they ever say???
i'd also like to point out that it's actually much vaguer whether or not Chuck killed his father. They cut away during their fight and then next thing you see is Bart hanging onto the edge. Chuck himself says that he isn't sure whether or not he pushed him or Bart fell over. but also Chuck and Blair both just stood there and did nothing to help Bart before he fell, which is involuntary manslaughter I believe
But seriously though, you're so right anon that all of this was made for true crime. In 2030, someone makes a "Jinx" style doc about Chuck I bet

Gossip girl fandom be like “ so the elitist, stuck up, entitled, selfish, misogynistic, narcissistic, woman-hating, slut-shaming bully and the attempted rapist are the best characters in the show but the girl who made mistakes but was still generally nice to people is the absolute worst” 🥴🥴

idk but what do you think of blairs really intense internalized misogyny? like i remember in S3 pilot Chuck was cheating on her and when she came in Chuck was like, she knew i had a girlfriend so she yelled at the girlfriend and then started making out with Chuck
oh that specific instance you're talking about was some unhealthy consensual "cheating kink" thing that blair and chuck had going on, i remember because when i saw it for the first time i was like "??" i mean, there's nothing wrong with roleplaying infidelity, the problem with the way chuck and blair did it was involving people who don't know that they're part of an RP scene, which is. bad ettiquette & fucked up on various levels.
but yeah, we see blair's internalised misogyny a lot. i think it comes thru especially in how she responds to jenny, esp over the whole "putting jenny into exile because chuck had sex with her" which... chuck more or less isolated jenny from everyone else and arguably took advantage of her, so blaming jenny for chuck in those instances is, to me, the most notable example for b's fucked up internalised misogyny.
i've actually spoken about this a decent amount on this blog before, i have an anti blair waldorf tag that u can go thru! im not, by definition? "anti blair", it's just a filtering/categorising thing.

“chuck is one of us whereas dan, despite his years of trying, never will be.”
after getting sold for an hotel, being assaulted, traumatized, and her worst self you’d think the girl will have some brain cells. alas, she sells out and ends up to be her classist bitchy-blair self.

It is strange to see how people's minds change with time. When I first started watching Gossip Girl in 2019, most people adored Blair and defended her no matter what she did and now, 4 years later I rewatched and went back to Gossip Girl Reddit and the Gossip Girl tags on Tumblr and I noticed that there is a lot of anti-Blair stuff now. And I have to say I get it.
I think that the fandom has grown up and matured and realized that she is really a terrible person. A good character, but a terrible person. I mean even back then at 16 I knew I would definitely not want to cross paths with her, but now that I have met someone similar to her, I know for a fact that you need to stay away from people like this. They are toxic. They let their insecurities get the best of them and take them out on other people. You don't want to be walking on eggshells around your best friend because she is jealous of you and will start a war with you if you spend 5 minutes alone with her boyfriend. Believe me, been there, done that. You don't want to be friends with someone telling you to stop talking to another friend because they are currently "at war". It is tiring. I am honestly surprised people put up with her for that long and that she was so popular at her school. In real life, the Blair-like girl I am referring to is not popular at all because people quickly realize that she is toxic and keep their distance. Guys are warning each other not to date her because she is "crazy".
Don't get me wrong, in season 1 and begining of season 2 I have a lot of sympathy for Blair. I think in those times her attitude actually makes sense and is justified. She is recovering from an eating disorder, her father left her mother for another man and moved to another continent, her best friend also left with no explanation and basically ghosted her, then she finds out that said friend slept with her boyfriend just before she left, her boyfriend is clearly still not over her, she makes a mistake by sleeping with the bad boy when vulnerable and gets her reputation tarnished for it, has a pregnancy scare, becomes the social parriah at her school, gets into the relationship with the bad boy for a week before he cheats on her and ghosts her, she gets a rebound guy who cheats on her with his step-mom .... I mean it's a lot for a teenage girl to go through in one year (I know other characters had it worse but still). After that, fuck her. She just throws hissy fits because Serena is more popular than her and tries to ruin her mother's fashion show just because her friends can't sit in the second row. She tries to ruin a teacher's reputation because she gave her a B, like what is she 5-years-old?? This behavior is not attractive at all, I don't see why she is so iconic. She just gets worse and worse each season, the only brief time of growth she had was when she was with Dan, but then she just regressed into her former self afterwards.
I used to think that "okay, she is extreme, but she is very driven and ambitious" and a lot of people in the fandom think that... except she's not. Yes she knew which school she wanted to go to since she was young, but so did Dan and Serena. But the reasons she wanted to go to that school were wrong. It wasn't because of a particular thing she wanted to study, it was just for her reputation and image and because her dad went there. In fact she didn't even know what she wanted to study there! She didn't even know what she wanted to be even at 19-21. She was just drifting aimlessly, dropped out of school after two years to marry the prince of Monaco and then got handed her mother's company. That's it. There is no ambition or hard work. Which is a pity because in the books she was actually very ambitious, she wanted to go to Yale to become a lawyer and worked very hard for it- she was described by other characters as having "extracurriculars coming out of her ass", was always busy studying or working for some organization. In the show we don't see her do much anything productive other than organize that one party in the Pilot (the only one being for an actual cause not for her image) and studying sometimes. Other than that she just orders Dorota and her minions around to do stuff for her.
Sorry for this long rant. I am curious what you guys think about about Blair, because now upon rewatching I just realized how seriously overrated she is.

re: vanessa being ooc, didn’t she straight up have a quote where she claimed that the reason chuck was a bad person was because he spent time with blair, and that she was the one holding him back? because i distinctly remember that being a thing in season 2 and being kinda pissed off about it lol. they had to literally make every single character bend over backwards for chuck and give every woman internalized misogyny i swear to god
oh god i found it… from 2x07: “Maybe what's really going on here is that you can't stand that [Chuck] might actually be a good person when he's not around you.” - vanessa to blair 🤢 I want to go back in time and hit the writers upside the head for that line, like, this is an attempted rapist we’re talking about!! fuck outta here!!!
Ughhhhhhhhh I hate that. You're so right, it's totally part of the writers trying to clumsily redeem Chuck by going "look, Vanessa our representative for the working class/straw feminist likes Chuck, he's one of the ~good~ billionaires not one of the bad ones". And yeah, that whole episode is chock full of internalized misogyny, I also really hate the way they write Blair in it too. Like I remember when I watched that ep it was the one time I was on Chuck's side over Blair's cause she was just so comically horrible? She was all like "how dare Chuck help these working class black people, he's clearly only doing it to fuck with Vanessa, why else would he help them" like girl what. So much racism and classism too. And yeah, that Vanessa line just seems so OOC to me? Like I know we still have a problem in our culture today of both men AND women blaming another woman for a man's bad behavior (cough cough) but even in the horrific misogyny of the 2000s, I just cannot see Vanessa of all people saying something like that.
Also I simply don't see Vanessa tolerating Chuck's presence in any capacity unless it's an emergency (such as the whole Nate's dad FBI thing). Like yeah she should use him for his money imo lol, but also Chuck goes against everything Vanessa seems to stand for, it truly doesn't compute to me that she could ever stand to be around him.
