I don't trust Batfamily fans who will hate everything about one character all the time always. They refuse to admit that the character does anything good for the story, or has a valuable asset to whatever group, team, person, or case that they are working on.

I think a healthy dislike is okay. Everyone who has ever talked to me knows I'm pretty critical of Bruce. Everyone on Tumblr who has read any of my posts knows that Jason annoys me.

However, they are still compelling characters who can be really interesting narrative and character wise. I actually think Jason can be an interesting character to use in stories.

That being said, everyone should be critical about their favourites. I follow the anti-Tim Drake tag for a reason. Because one it makes me ask the question, "Is my perception of Tim in rose coloured glasses, does what the person says have any basis in canon, and is this information i should think over or more on from?" It also keeps my critical thinking skills up, and my ability to memorize information and peice together said information.

That also being said Anti Tags for all the Batfam is filled with mysogeny, racism, classism, homophobia, and ablism.

[Correction: some of the main anti tags aren't as bad anymore. Hope they stay that way. Avoid Redit it can be really bad.]

Selfishly it makes me feel better about my ability to consume and create media. Because I'm at least better than the bare minimum.

Anyway, here's the thing. Stop being crazy stans who can't take a single criticism and stop being crazy antis who can't take a single criticism. Learn to balance the adoration and dislike.

Please read source material before you say fuck canon, because how do you know what to change if you have never read the material before. You wouldn't want someone who had never learned to fix or handle a car to suddenly come in and try to upgrade it for you?

i finished reading Power of Shazam! and i have some thoughts that i wanted to share. buckle up

firstly, i am so tired of "billy joins the batfam" stories, especially because 99% of the time the bats are reduced to fanon tropes with personalities that they don't actually have in canon. not to mention, mary is never included in these stories. it would be one thing if this was New 52 billy, who is only mary's foster brother, but the majority of what ive seen takes inspiration from the idea of billy being a homeless kid in fawcett

so why are we throwing billy in with people who live halfway across the country, when the bromfields are right there?

if you're going to write a fanfic where billy (and, hopefully, mary) joins another established superhero family, why not have him be taken in by superman? though they argue a lot in canon, their morals, abilities, and worldview are much more similar. they admire each other!

additionally, a lot of the time other members of the marvel family are completely ignored. freddy freeman only ever appears to be a romantic interest for billy or mary, tawky tawny shows up in some fics for a moment or so, but dudley and ibis the invincible are nowhere to be found. even black adam, doctor sivana, and mr. mind are underutilized!

Power of Shazam! is such a heartfelt story, when you look at the bigger picture. it's about a boy who's had to look out for himself for so long learning to trust family again. it's about him sharing the burdens of the responsibilities he has, and also sharing the guilt. billy feels so much guilt all the time, and it's absolutely gut-wrenching at points. there's an issue where fairfield, the twins' home town, is nuked to get back at them. and billy just has a breakdown

i have my criticisms on how New 52 handles billy as a character, but him having anger at the world is not out of character. billy is a very, very angry boy— why wouldn't he be? his entire life was taken away from him, his trust was betrayed again and again, the people around him think him to be incompetent

but he still finds joy in life. he's silly, he's funny, he always sees the bright side to things. and this run does a phenomenal job of demonstrating just how complex he really is

there's also the problem of mary and freddy acting subservient to billy. throughout this series, mary is explicitly referred to as captain marvel several times. she's captain marvel as much as billy is. and much of freddy's arc within this series revolves around him outgrowing the "junior" tagline and becoming captain marvel 3. they're not just a team, they're a family

they protect and look out for each other. this is what i want to see more of! i have fun with fics or headcanons where billy gets looked after by another hero, but if that's the only way you interact with his media, it's a disservice to his character and the characters of his family

read Power of Shazam! look into these characters. and please stop reducing these complex and dynamic characters to tropes

I... dislike... most Jason "recovery" stories.

Often it's: "Good job, Jason! You recognized you were the singular Wrong, Fucked-up One, and now you're getting Therapy!! So now you're correcting yourself to be Good and Normal like us!! We're all totally healing together. 🫶"

Ya know a free-range murder clown has been terrorizing the city for the last 20 years, and that's one of the smaller traumas. Are you really sure that Jason is the singular one getting in the way of a Big Family Happily Ever After? No external factors that might cause him to cope in unacceptable ways? Is the rest of the "family" required to uphold the status quo that hurt them?

I really rather prefer utterly deranged destruction and mutual abuse over the forced toxic positivity and victim-blaming, thanks.

Batfam stans are so genuinely fascinating. Most of them clearly haven’t read a comic besides wfa, they write the characters as one dimensional as humanly possible then get annoyed if you mention canon traits or events. They also take other characters they know nothing about and hollow them out to replace everything about them with their designated bat; it’s either they’re obsessed with their paired bat or they criticise them slightly and are turned into the villain.

I don’t understand the hate towards Gotham war, like okay, bad stuff is happening to your favourite character, but that’s how all comics work isn’t it?
