Random facts about Leslie Cheung in the Hong Kong entertainment industry
Leslie had a surprisingly good reputation in the entertainment industry, considering how invasive the entertainment press was (and still is) in Hong Kong. Almost all of his “scandals” involved his sexuality, both regarding his gender non-conforming performances and relationship with long-term partner Daffy Tong.
Leslie’s and singer Alan Tam’s fanbases engaged in heated rivalry in the 80s, after Leslie’s sudden rise in popularity in 1985. He would get harassed and crowded by Tam’s fans, which played a role in his eventual hiatus in 1989. Leslie and Alan, however, remained civil with each other.
Leslie and Happy Together co-star Tony Leung were good friends. They had a sweet friendship despite their opposing personalities, and Tony’s wife Carina Lau (also an actor and friend of Leslie’s) said that Tony initially did not cry after Leslie’s death, but broke down sobbing a few days later.
Leslie respected actors Chow Yun-Fat and Ti Lung (co-stars in A Better Tomorrow), and paid tribute to them at his ‘89 concert.
He sang with classic Cantopop singer Sam Hui (dubbed 歌神, or ‘God of Songs’) at Hui’s retirement party.
Leslie and late singer-actress Anita Mui are widely regarded as a duo by Hong Kong audiences, with both of them paving the way for queer and gender non-conforming performance in Hong Kong, and achieving legendary status in Chinese pop music.
Leslie dated actress Teresa Mo in 1977, and became tight friends with her after reuniting on the All’s Well, Ends Well set in 1991. She’s also regarded as the only official girlfriend Leslie ever had.
He cited himself as bisexual. His other love interests included an anonymous ‘first love’ with long black hair, actress Annie Ngai See Pui, and rumoured affair with his assistant ‘Kenneth’.
Leslie and gay singer Anthony Wong released the album Cross Over in 2002, combining the musicians’ wildly different styles. (It’s a banger, listen to it!!)
Many of Leslie’s later (and most well-known) songs featured lyrics by Albert Leung, one of the most famous lyricists in Cantopop. He is also openly gay!
Leslie thought Japanese singer Akina Nakamori was extremely beautiful. (Just wanted to add this here because same, Leslie, same.)

My interests in specific types of cdramas can be traced back to the HK dramas that I watched growing up. Specifically, xianxias and historical romances.
My interest in historical romances stemmed from watching TVB’s 2003 Perish in the Name of Love, based on the 帝女花 opera. To an 8-year old, that was the angstiest drama I’d ever seen. The second angstiest drama was when I watched Drive of Life in middle school, also starring Charmaine Sheh. She honestly ruled my childhood.
But my interest in xianxias stemmed from 2 specific dramas: TVB’s The Journey to the West (my mom used this drama to teach me about reincarnation lol) and Whatever it Takes starring Benny Chan and Annie Man.
There were 2 stories in The Journey to West that were memorable to me, and both included Angie Cheong, though she played different characters. The stories are all a blur to me and I barely remember any details from them, but I think in Journey to the West I, she played the spider demon named Shishi whose lover was reincarnated but they ended up dying in a fire. According to TV tropes:
“Spider Demoness Shishi was sentenced to death via fire but her scholar husband Yushu refused to accept it, and carried her to perish in the fire together, although Shishi inadvertently survived. The arc ended with a reincarnated Yushu (as a Centipede Demon) sentenced to death via fire, but Shishi carried Yushu to perish in the fire together, this time killing both for real.“ https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Series/JourneyToTheWest1996
In Journey to the West 2, she played a snake demon. I remember nothing from that arc, except she was also scorned by her lover.
I also remember nothing from the 2001 drama Whatever it Takes 天子寻龙, except that I was especially in love with Annie Man’s angelic character, and it was probably my first exposure to story about a fairy falling in love. My only faint memory from the drama was how ethereal and elegant she was as a fairy, and my kindergarten self wanted to be her. But here’s the MDL summary if you’re curious. It’s also not the first TVB drama that featured a fairy/angel who falls in love with the mortal she’s been tasked to help. Jessica Hsuan played a fairy who’s come down to earth to help Deric Wan’s love life in the 1995 drama A Good Match from Heaven 天降奇緣.

I feel like TVB xianxias walked so that cdrama xianxias could run.
Bonus: Dicky Cheung (who played the Monkey King in Journey to the West I), mocks the tropes in modern cdrama xianxias (at the 1:40 mark in the video). He says that back in the day, deities and spirits and fairies could wear whatever colourful clothes they wanted. Nowadays, the heavenly realm in xianxia dramas seem to have a dress code where everyone needs to wear white.
Back in the day, there was also a Shi Fu 師父 in xianxia dramas, but back then, your Shi Fu was nothing but your Shi Fu. Nowdays, your Shi Fu is your lover. Brutal.
Here’s the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rWjN96VIc8
Anyway, thanks for joining me as I took a trip down memory lane.

nycc was fantastic! the best part was getting to meet the lovely @tofuthebold and spend the day with my good friend @glompcat! that was really wonderful, I think the high will carry me for days.
meeting artists and authors was nerve-wracking but worth it! emilio laiso (doctor aphra: remastered) was so gracious; he seemed genuinely excited to see interest in aphra. he specifically wanted to know whether we liked her expressions - laiso's aphra is tremendously expressive, it's one of the aspects I enjoy most about his work - and spoke of his own love for the character in terms of her ambiguity. had we spoken italian, I think the discussion could have become really interesting, because he seemed so open to talking about his process and character work. at his table in artist's alley, he had some lovely, highly limited posters of aphra (yes, I bought one) for purchase in addition to his sketchbook, which includes a colored page with aphra.
andrea broccardo, who did work on screaming citadel and will be taking over the main star wars comic as of the next issue, was also delighted to talk of aphra and especially sana, who features heavily in #56! his love of the characters was palpable. at his table in artist's alley, he offered customized versions of his sketchbook - which includes a ton of sw characters, including luke, han, chewie, vader, kanan, hera - with your character of choice drawn by hand at the con on the cover. (I have an aphra and she's amazing!)
charles soule (lando, poe dameron, obi-wan & anakin, darth vader) was busier - we walked past his table in artist's alley three times and only encountered him once, and then only briefly. I had darth vader #18 (the tarkin hunt) with me, which he seemed pleased to see - it's the issue that contains his philosophy for the character in a nutshell, an assessment he confirmed with other words. I stuttered something about his use of a four elements scheme and he said he put all that in for a reason. when we mentioned the ongoing arc, he said something along the lines of there being much in store ... he had trade paperbacks of the major comics and his new novel at his table - which I want to read when dissertating subsides.
@tofuthebold is working on a new comic that sounds and looks riveting - can't wait until it's out!
although his announcement that he would be at the con was what got me to even raise the question of going, I missed kieron gillen. he flash-announced a signing at the marvel booth - many thanks to the ever-astute @tofuthebold for letting me know! - but was only briefly present there. lessons learned here about capped lines, following twitter, and the elusive.
we saw some fabulous padmé cosplay - @erikaalamode was in the lake dress, and pictures do not do her work justice - the flow, the movement, the grace were astounding to see. it was as though padmé were floating across the con floor.
the incredibly talented women who contributed to women of star wars are well worth your follow. at the panel about the book, ashley eckstein and amy ratcliffe spoke of how ahsoka has changed their lives, annie stoll about her love for sabine, sara alfageeh about growing up with tpm and identifying with padmé, karen hallion about the time when the only woman in star wars was leia and what it meant to her to be able to draw general leia and see general leia cosplay, sarah wilkinson and cryssy cheung about the process of drawing an icon like ahsoka, and jen bartel - who did the incredible cover - about how she had assumed "murder eyes" while drawing in order to capture the essence of leia for the headshot below:

(X)
if you’re at the con, many of them have tables at artist’s alley!
I’ve linked mostly to twitter above, but you can also find many of the women of star wars contributors on instagram:
Tumblr media
none of these interactions would have been possible without the incredible generosity of @glompcat, who essentially held my hand through the entire process, initiating (brilliant) conversations with the creators and demonstrating such friendship and patience and kindness as I have rarely seen. <333

Tumblr media
MORE PHOTOS... GLIMPSES OF MAHA MAHESHWARA PUJA (DAY 3) || 13 APRIL 2021 THE VISION OF BRINGING GLOBAL PEACE AS DECLARED ON JAN 1ST, 2021 IS INDEED A RESPONSIBILITY THAT CAN BE ENVISIONED AND EXECUTED IN LIVING REALITY WORLDWIDE ONLY BY THE LIVING INCARNATION OF PARAMASHIVA HIMSELF. THE SPH NITHYANANDA PARAMASHIVAM GRACIOUSLY ACCEPTED THE REQUEST OF KAILASA'S DEPARTMENT OF RELIGION IN COLLABORATION WITH DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICE OF A SPECIAL MAHA MAHESHWARA PUJA THAT WOULD BE HAPPENING ON 11TH, 12TH AND 13TH OF APRIL 2021. OVER 500 LIVES WERE OFFERED AT THE FEET OF THE SPH NITHYANANDA PARAMASHIVAM DURING MAHESHWARA PUJA. MAHESHWARA PUJA IS HINDUISM'S PRESCRIPTION IN LIBERATION OF THE DEPARTED SOUL. KARMA, AS DEFINED BY THE SPH IS THE CYCLE OF CHOOSING IMPOSSIBILITY OVER POSSIBILITY. KARMA , AS SUCH CARRIED BY ANCESTORS FOR GENERATIONS DOES INFLUENCE THE SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE OF ONE'S LIFE. MAHESHWARA PUJA IS HINDUISM IN ITS FINEST TO LIBERATE YOUR ANCESTORS FROM THEIR KARMAS AND FREE YOURSELF ONCE FOR ALL FROM THE EFFECTS OF THEIR KARMA ON YOU. OFFERING MAHESHWARA PUJA FOR YOURSELF WHILE LIVING ASSURES MUKTHI FOR YOU, AND IMMENSELY SUPPORTS YOU IN LIVING ENLIGHTENMENT (JEEVAN MUKTHI). CONSIDERING THESE COUPLE YEARS HAVE BEEN THE TIPPING POINT FOR A NEW WORLD ORDER, WHEREIN MANKIND AT LARGE ARE FORCED INTO TERROR PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY, PSYCHOLOGICALLY AND CONSCIOUSLY, WHEREIN LOSING LIVES DUE TO PANDEMIC AND ITS EFFECTS, LOSING LIVELIHOOD, THREATENED WITH BIO WAR, ETC - SPIRITUAL HEALING IS A DIRE NEED! HINDUISM PRESCRIBES VARIOUS METHODS FOR GLOBAL HEALING - ONE SUCH IS MAHESHWARA PUJA. NULLIFYING COLLECTIVE NEGATIVITY SIMPLY THROUGH THE PRESENCE OF THE AVATAR AND HIS ORDER OF MONKS. THE SOMASAMBHU PATATI SAYS, IT IS THOUSAND TIMES MORE GREATER THAN OFFERING ANY “SHRAADDHA”, ANY “PINDA”, IN ANY RIVER, ANY WATER-BODY, ANY LAKE, ANY HOLY LAND, ANY HOLY PLACE. OFFERING IT IN THE STOMACH OF THE LIVING INCARNATION OF PARAMASHIVA IS THE BEST FORM OF “PINDA THARPANA” AND 'SHRAADDHA'. IN HINDUISM, SHRAADHHA WHEREIN FOOD IS OFFERED TO SANYASIS FOR THE COMPLETION WITH THE DEPARTED SOULS, IS CALLED MAHESHWARA PUJA. IN THE SOMASHAMBHU PADDHATI, SHRAADHHA VIDHI,SLOKA 3 लिङ्गिनो ब्राह्मणाद्याश्च श्राद्धीयाः शिवदीक्षिताः । LIṄGINO BRĀHMAṆĀDYĀŚCA ŚRĀDDHĪYĀḤ ŚIVADĪKṢITĀḤ । THE TRANSLATION GOES “THE SANNYASIS AND BRAHMANAS WHO HAVE BEEN INITIATED INTO THE SHIVA DEEKSHA ARE ELIGIBLE TO BE APPOINTED AS THE REPRESENTATIVES OF PITRUS IN THE SHRAADHHA.” REGARDLESS OF THE NUMBER OF BIRTHS THE SOUL WOULD HAVE TAKEN, REGARDLESS OF THE SOUL, WHILE EMBODIED HAVING BEEN INITIATED BY THE MASTER OR NOT IN HIS LIFETIME - THE MASTER CAN INTERVENE AND MAKE HIS PRESENCE AVAILABLE IN THE DEPARTED SOUL’S LIFE AND LEAD IT TO ENLIGHTENMENT! THIS IS POSSIBLE ONLY THROUGH MAHESHWARA PUJA!
