My interests in specific types of cdramas can be traced back to the HK dramas that I watched growing up. Specifically, xianxias and historical romances. 

My interest in historical romances stemmed from watching TVB’s 2003 Perish in the Name of Love, based on the 帝女花 opera. To an 8-year old, that was the angstiest drama I’d ever seen. The second angstiest drama was when I watched Drive of Life in middle school, also starring Charmaine Sheh. She honestly ruled my childhood. 

But my interest in xianxias stemmed from 2 specific dramas: TVB’s The Journey to the West (my mom used this drama to teach me about reincarnation lol) and Whatever it Takes starring Benny Chan and Annie Man. 

There were 2 stories in The Journey to West that were memorable to me, and both included Angie Cheong, though she played different characters. The stories are all a blur to me and I barely remember any details from them, but I think in Journey to the West I, she played the spider demon named Shishi whose lover was reincarnated but they ended up dying in a fire. According to TV tropes: 

“Spider Demoness Shishi was sentenced to death via fire but her scholar husband Yushu refused to accept it, and carried her to perish in the fire together, although Shishi inadvertently survived. In Journey to the West 2, she played a snake demon. I remember nothing from that arc, except she was also scorned by her lover. 

I also remember nothing from the 2001 drama Whatever it Takes 天子寻龙, except that I was especially in love with Annie Man’s angelic character, and it was probably my first exposure to story about a fairy falling in love. My only faint memory from the drama was how ethereal and elegant she was as a fairy, and my kindergarten self wanted to be her. But here’s the MDL summary if you’re curious. It’s also not the first TVB drama that featured a fairy/angel who falls in love with the mortal she’s been tasked to help. Jessica Hsuan played a fairy who’s come down to earth to help Deric Wan’s love life in the 1995 drama A Good Match from Heaven 天降奇緣.

I feel like TVB xianxias walked so that cdrama xianxias could run. 

Bonus: Dicky Cheung (who played the Monkey King in Journey to the West I), mocks the tropes in modern cdrama xianxias (at the 1:40 mark in the video). He says that back in the day, deities and spirits and fairies could wear whatever colourful clothes they wanted. Nowadays, the heavenly realm in xianxia dramas seem to have a dress code where everyone needs to wear white. 

Back in the day, there was also a Shi Fu 師父 in xianxia dramas, but back then, your Shi Fu was nothing but your Shi Fu. Nowdays, your Shi Fu is your lover. Brutal.

Summary:

Journey to the West is a Hong Kong television series adapted from the 16th-century novel of the same title. Starring Dicky Cheung, Kwong Wah, Wayne Lai and Evergreen Mak, the series was produced by TVB and was first broadcast on TVB Jade in Hong Kong in November 1996. A sequel, Journey to the West II, was broadcast in 1998, but the role of the Monkey King was played by Benny Chan instead, due to contract problems between Dicky Cheung and TVB. Cheung later reprised the role in another television series The Monkey King: Quest for the Sutra (2002), which was broadcast on TVB but not produced by the station.

This is another masterpiece of Hong Kong TVB's remake of the classic. In addition to being based on the classic "Journey to the West", the plot also adds a lot of funny elements, which makes this work create another flavor different from the original while restoring the original. A Mingling stone monkey (decorated by Zhang Weijian) exploded from a huge rock in Flower Fruit Mountain in Dongsheng Shenzhou. After the stone monkey learned supernatural powers, he made a big fuss in the Heavenly Palace and was crushed under the Five Fingers Mountain by the Buddha. Five hundred years later, Guanyin Bodhisattva enlightened Wukong, worshiped Tang Sanzang (played by Jiang Hua) as his teacher, and embarked on the road of learning from the scriptures and redeeming sins.

Then in the last episode, Tang Seng and his disciples continued on the road. However, Tang Seng had a nightmare on this day. In the dream, his hometown Chang'an City experienced a catastrophe. A giant monkey was wreaking havoc. In order to protect his righteous brother Tang Taizong, Tang Seng himself died tragically! Tang Seng woke up from the nightmare and knew that he was the reincarnation of the Golden Cicada. This was by no means a simple dream, but a sign from heaven. Therefore, Tang Seng decided to ask Wukong (played by Chen Haomin), Bajie (played by Li Yaoxiang) and Wujing (played by Mai Changqing) to go back to Chang'an in three groups to stop this catastrophe. Afterwards, Tang Seng was still worried, and decided to do what he couldn't do, and walked back to Chang'an City by himself to prevent the catastrophe. On the other hand, Chang'an City is a different scene. Emperor Tang Taizong was so overjoyed that he thought the ape was an auspicious beast, so he sent people to capture it and display it at the ceremony. The catastrophe in Tang Seng's dream is slowly approaching.

The 1998 jttw show is like a sequel to the 1996 jttw but it starred benny chan as swk instead of dicky cheung. In the series they happened to come across LEMH whos a small monkey child here. Swk was at first wary of LEMH but quickly got found of him n became his older bro. Here we get to see another celestial monkey whos is the long arm gibbon? General gibbon who often fought swk. The last of the celestial monkey the baboon is actually station in heaven n is like a bodhisattva or just a celestial there. Idk cant rlly remember the last one well!

Procrastinating

So I have about 6 Minekura-related posts I wanted to publish before moving on - I have not decided how or where. All I know is I want to post translations of Boys' Love Drama CD or related stuff such as BL Urabanashi or Live Pastel Collection stuff but I am not really sure if tumblr is the right place. After all, BL is not even a legitimate tag hereabouts! (okay, but fujoshi is)

Anyhow, this old and gold came up in my playlist and I just feel like linking it. 1998 sai1jau4gei3 is best sai1jau4gei3, Dicky Cheung is the best Monkey King and I don't know any Stephen Chow movie lol (but I happen to know a Sanzo who sings Only You.)

The top subtitle is Mandarin, the bottom one Cantonese, apparently. And the simplified characters sear my old, old Gen-X eyes, yes they do.
