James Potter was not known for making very smart decisions. In fact, on any given day, it could be said that James Potter was undoubtedly, one-hundred-percent, certainly making bad, bad, very poor choices. His very loving friends knew to keep an eye out for his dangerous shenanigans. Mostly, his dangers were accidental. He was clumsy or did something stupid—by accident. He was labeled as a local hazard. 

Unfortunately for everyone, today was no different. 

James took a shortcut home—through a dark and dingy alley; none of its grim qualities raised any alarm bells in his head. He was skipping alone, minding his own—when he came across a miracle. 

.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜。.

Regulus was having a peaceful evening—a rare occurrence, being the boyfriend of one local hazard named James Potter. Regulus was relaxed, curled up sitting with a book by the window, watching the rain pitter-patter away.

The door banged open and Regulus sighed heavily, expecting chaos to ensue. James was a storm, barging into every room like some kind of natural disaster. But oh, did Regulus adore him, and every moment spent with James was worth it. James’ chaos was simply endearing, even if Regulus needed to be on high-alert all the time. 

James crashed into the room holding a—

“What the fuck?”

James positively beamed, “Regulus! I found a—I don’t even know, honestly, what this is—I think it’s some kind of miracle!” 

The furry gray thing in James’ arms was wriggling. 

James continued, “Reg, I just found it an alley, can you believe it? It must be some kind of-of miracle animal breeding, really—it looks like a cat and a dog had a baby!” He sounded so giddy.

Regulus squealed, backing away from his boyfriend, “James—” 

“Or perhaps a panda? It has weird fur lines around its eyes—” James was looking at the animal curiously, held up to his eyeline.

Regulus held his arms around his stomach protectively. “Potter! That is not a hybrid—”

James looked up, excited. “You’ve seen this before?”

He was about to have a meltdown. James just brought an alley rodent into their shoebox apartment. “It’s a fucking racoon, James!” 

James’ childish wonder did not fade. “What’s a—a raccoon?” 

“That! That thing, with the gray fur and dark mask around its eyes—and the stripy tail. A raccoon. Raccoons, James, are not friendly animals—”

James scoffed. “Please, Reg—he’s plenty friendly. I still think he’s a panda-cat-dog mix.” 

“He’s a rodent!”

James gasped. “Like Peter?”

“Yes! Just like Peter, but bigger and probably carrying more diseases from some dingy alley.” 

James was just standing by the front door, examining the rather calm rodent in his arms. The raccoon was large—James was holding it with both arms wrapped around. James looked rather put-out. He looked up at Regulus with wide eyes. “So—you won’t—I mean, we can’t—keep him?” 

Regulus blinked at him. “No, sweetheart. We’re not keeping him. Hazard behavior, James.” 

James and the raccoon said their goodbyes, but James never forgot his miracle. He kept a picture of the raccoon in his wallet.

note. I'd like to say that this is not necessarily an x reader. i merely desired to get this off my mind so, this should not be treated as an actual product ( i want to be free to write for aventurine, I have around 3 ideas. )

‘Boothill.’

The cyborg stirs as you whisper his name into the quietude.

the frail sun concealed with patches of grey clouds hovering. seagulls glide in a delicate pattern against the backdrop of the sky. The water dark in fathoms, it ripples pulverulently against accumulated dark, craggy rocks, lining a hillock. Your white cottage rests atop it, permitting you to overlook the exquisite scenery.

The cottage is of two storeys, with a lucid ocean vision. The front porch adequately wide for your leisure table-chair setting and cream plumeria pots.

The place is silent—omitting the seagulls’ raucous calls— almost too solitary at times. Boothill questions how you manage to live alone in such dull surroundings. Albeit that if you craved company, the town is a hill walk away.

‘do memories still exist when they’re forgotten?’

You blink at him, and he does so, too.

‘gee, sugar!  I ain’t a no philosopher, y’know.. been gettin’ the blues?’

You merely chuckle, at his words. ‘no… I have a feeling… that I am losing memories. I don’t know what exactly, however, I can feel I am gradually forgetting some things. I can't quite explain it. Yet, it’s akin to.. memories leaking out of my mind, palpable in the atmosphere, and out of reach..’

‘I assume it’s related to this gun somehow,’ you pull out a gun from your parka, diligently tracing its polished surface before you toss it to him.

 Boothill stares at the gun in astonishment, he raises the gun before his eyes, tilts his head slightly and shuts an eye as if aiming. ‘woah, peach. That’s some gun ya got there!’

‘found it abandoned here on the shore. Though I prefer to dispose of it.’

Boothill raises a brow, ‘ya sure?’

You nod.

'Sometimes, I have this vision,' you state. 'There is this gun and bullet within. It deep inside the soft part of my head, where memories lie. It does not hurt— it is merely there. And I am witnessing it as if it occurred to someone else. I want someone to pull it out, but nobody notices it's there. And then everything begins to vanish. I begin to vanish, too. Only, the gun and the bullet linger— to the very conclusion. Akin to the bone of some prehistoric animal on the beach. That is the kind of vision I have.’

The next time Boothill visits the seashore is a year after and on the exact day. Everything was left as it was. He glances at the white cottage, its windowpanes boarded, and smoulder emits from its chimney. Nevertheless, he’s conscious that you’ve long yielded life by the seashore. Drawing out the gun you’ve endowed him, he recalls your previous conversation— you’re somewhere out there in the world, strolling, with that bullet adhered in your mind, your memories mislaying an intangible, bubble-ish, blue trail.

And so, he does the same— raises the gun before his eyes, tilts his head slightly and shuts an eye. His fingers pull at the trigger, at the abyss ahead, at the fragments your memories mislaid at this spot.

You’re not there.

And you’ll never be.

~o. Athena Cabin 6 - Headcanons .o~

A/N: Okay, so I feel like the Athena cabin doesn't get as much love as the others, it's rarely mentioned in the books. So I decided I wanted to make some fun headcanons for it! As always requests are open! (The main two fandoms I write for is Bnha, and Percy Jackson) If you would like to request any other cabins lemme know! I do minor gods as well :) Alright enjoy!

Two Words. Game. Nights.

Alright, so just like how the Apollo cabin has karaoke every Friday, I’m thinking the Athena cabin has GAME NIGHTS.

And ooh geez. It’s competitive.

Some campers have nicknamed it “War night” because whenever they play, you can hear them arguing all over camp

Like full on “NO ANNABETH. YOU HAVE TO PAY UP. I OWN THAT SQUARE”

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN UNO, I SAW YOU DROP THOSE CARDS ON THE FLOOR”

It’s almost scary how competitive they can get.

They’ll have this huge scoreboard for every camper, that’s really complex, and a whole system to decide who plays who, and which game.

And gods forbid you interrupt them. 

You will face the wrath of the entire Athena cabin.

not fun.

Additionally, I think they would also have study nights, where they bring all sorts of snacks and blankets

Just a bunch of Athena campers in a cozy little blanket fort- all studying XD

They would also definitely help each other with homework assignments and other stuff like that.

In the winter, since some campers stay full time, they probably don’t really have a school to go to-

So I think in the summer, the Athena campers would have a program to teach other demi-gods school subjects, and the core curriculum so that they could catch up

(Because there were definitely some campers who did not know what algebra was.)

On top of that, I feel like there are two types of Athena campers

The chaotic neat

Or the Neat Chaotic.

The Chaotic neat, will literally go around, and pick up ALL THE TRASH. 

They are the most organized campers you will ever meet

Every item has a specific place and reason why it’s in that place

Also- they will full on Lecture and Scold whoever gets in their way

The neat Chaotic, has projects everywhere- ish

It’s borderline messy, but I refuse to believe that an Athena camper can actually be full on messy. 

They’re the type to constantly lose their pencils, where Chaotic neat Athena campers are the type to always have a pencil tucked into their hair.

I have a feeling the Athena campers are very diverse- looks wise

But they all have gray eyes. ALL OF THEM

Sometimes it can be scary

If they’re all together, for games of like capture the flag- when they stand together gray eyes just staring

It’s So. Intimidating.

I think the cabin would request have laptops available

Like at any time-

Because Athena campers need to write down their ideas! 

And it’s just so much quicker when typing.

They would full on go up to Chiron, with a petition to get demi-god safe laptops solely for that purpose.

(Yeah Annabeth has her Daedalus Laptop- but her siblings would get jealous duh.)

+Random fun idea

Since Athena is god of crafts

I think some Athena campers would be extremely good at DIY stuff, and like crafting

So some of them would have like mini crochet + knitting clubs that they’d organize 

Maybe sell some stuffed animals to the younger campers 

Omg it’d be so cute.

wada sez: A whole bunch of Shockwave variants appear dispatched here. In order of appearance: Energon Shockblast, Alternators Shockblast, Action Master Shockwave, Animated Shockwave, and finally the RadioShack-exclusive “Galactic Man”, a separately-licensed version of the ToyCo toy which became Shockwave, sometimes referred to as “Shackwave” by the fandom and more recently homaged by an exclusive Generations Selects redeco. I’m not sure if the other G1 Shockwaves are supposed to be any in particular. He’s attended to by some Diagnostic Drones, which are often used as generic helper drones in modern G1 stories outside their original Beast Machines context. Now, I’ll confess that I’ve found the scripting in this one to be a little confusing, but if I understand correctly, this strip is positioning Galactic Man as a kind of proto-Shockwave (though they were on shelves in 1985 at the same time) who set up this “transdimensional beacon”, only to summon G1 Shockwave and fail to defeat him. My confusion stems from Shockwave’s line about “the unexpected tenacity of the target” seemingly referring to someone other than himself, so I’m open to the possibility I’ve misinterpreted things. His final remarks about not submitting to an “inferior/duplicate/Megatron” makes me even wonder if it’s implying Megatron is a copy of Shockwave/Galactic Man, but surely that’s an overly literal interpretation...? Hello! Why did penguins evolve to have black feathers if they live in icy (mostly white?) locations? I understand them having a white tummy because when swimming they could be more difficult to identify by a predator swimming below them? Thanks!

Hello! So, here's what I learned at uni:

the widely-accepted reason penguins have black feathers is the same reason they have white tummies, but backwards. When swimming, they are more difficult to identify by a predator swimming above them! You can see similar countershading in sharks and dolphins, and also on land animals like mountain goats and lizards. Overall, it helps to make animals less obvious when viewing from the side, because it reduces the obviousness of their shadow.

As to why penguins have black feathers in icy, mostly white, locations (on LAND), you need to consider why it would be good to be white in an icy, white location in the first place!

Mostly, it would provide camouflage, which would protect from land predators! However, penguins don't really have any significant land predators in Antarctica. There are no polar bears, or big snakes, or even foxes or coyotes in Antarctica, so the penguin won't benefit from being camouflaged on land. Basically, there's no "selective pressure" for them to be all white!

some penguin chicks, however, do have to worry about a few predators, so they have a little more camouflage than the adult penguins:

What's more, there are likely advantages to black feathers in a cold environment like Antarctica! For example, in the sun, dark feathers absorb more thermal energy, helping to warm the penguin and maintain their body heat.

There may also be some stuff with black feathers being more resistant to wear/ friction drag in the water, but that's entering the realm of ongoing research, which I won't get into here.

Emil makes an appearance in the second part of the story, so I have watched the first episode as it aired on TV, before I played my role. I went to the recording studio after I'd experienced the passion and the voice acting of this show as a viewer, so I could enjoy it as both a cast member and as a fan. When I was first asked to take the role, I couldn't even imagine how it was going to turn out - animating ice skating - but when I watched it on air, I was stunned by the beauty of it.

Emil is a character that actively enjoys all sports, not just figure skating and I felt that he is having a lot of fun when he's skating in the show. That's why I wonder what kind of skating he would show to us if he gave all that he has to get the first place. Of course, it's not that he doesn't want to get the first place now, but I'd like to see how he would be like if he were focusing only on skating - that's what I thought after the recording of the last episode was over.

One of the things that left a strong impression on me is the affection that Emil has for Michele and Sara, I think? I think that he can still just shout "Heeey!" even if he gets ignored, shows that he's just a good person. And I was very worried when Makkachin got that manju stuck in her throat (laugh).

He doesn't quite realize what's happening at first. The tug on his ankle pulling him back under the water as he reported back to the others what he had found at the bottom of the lake. Steve kicked out as he fought to break the surface of the water again, trying to break free from whatever had caught him. He managed to get his head above water for a second, before he was pulled down again, harder this time, whatever was wrapped around his ankle so fast and so strong that he had no chance of getting away from it. He screamed involuntarily, losing some of his precious oxygen, but the sound was cut off by the water.

It hit him as he neared the bottom of the lake what was actually going on. The sight of the gate coming back into view giving him the final clue to add it together. The thing caught round his ankle wasn't just some kind of lake weed, or some old fishing debris. It was a vine from the Upside Down. Holding him tight and pulling him into the gate. The thought went through his mind that this was it. That he'd survived the demogorgon, and the demodogs, and the Russians, and getting dragged through Lover's Lake into the Upside Down would be what finally took him out.

Breaking through the gate felt slimy and disgusting, the vine flinging him onto the dried ground of the lake bed. He tried to fight against it, but the vine was too strong, dragging him across the ground. It seemed like forever before the vine finally let him go, throwing him against another tangle of vines. He gave himself a minute to catch his breath and take stock of his surroundings. From everything he'd heard, and what he'd seen before, this was the first time he'd been in the Upside Down. The tunnels when he fought the demodogs didn't nearly reflect how creepy it really was in the Upside Down. He struggled to his feet, staring up at the red lightning sky, when he heard the screeching of something. Some variation of the demogorgon.

Steve started to back away, but there was nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide. He grabbed an oar out of the broken boat, intent on fighting back. But it wasn't enough. Not when one of the creatures wrapped its tail around his neck, throwing him back to the ground. He tried to struggle against it, but it seemed to pull tighter, choking the air out of him. The other two swooped down, he tried to kick them away, or to hit them off with the hand that wasn't fighting the tail around his neck. They didn't flinch at his attempted attacks, diving in and biting chunks out of his sides.

The pain and the lack of oxygen were getting too much, and he knew that it would take a miracle for him to survive this. The only thoughts crossing his mind as his vision started to go hazy and dark being, 'This is it. No one will ever find you.'

Al comenzar con nuestras propuestas ambientales y analizarlas con detenimiento pudimos notar un factor que se nos presentaba constantemente, lo cual es realmente preocupante ya que estamos hablando de un recurso vital para cualquier ser humano y llegamos a la conclusión de que nuestro tema elegido será la contaminación del agua debido al desecho de aceites y grasas.

Antecedentes:

Ubicada en la vialidad Adolfo López Mateos número 218 segundo piso En la

localidad de San Luis Mextepec, municipio Zinacantepec, México, problemática

ubicada en el restaurante del mismo domicilio.

Planteamiento del problema:

El problema se encuentra en el manejo de las grasas y aceites dentro de la dirección e inclusive en la cuadra completa, debido a la desinformación que existe sobre ciertos temas ambientales llegamos a hacer mucho daño sin darnos cuenta, Debido a esto nos encontramos con un problema de contaminación del agua que se presenta a través de desechar grasas y aceites a través del desagüe o de la tubería que se encuentra en nuestras casas, agregando a esto que se encuentra un establecimiento público de comida donde constantemente se necesita hacer uso de aceite vegetal.

Lo cual es realmente inquietante debido a qué según diferentes fuentes, una gota de aceite puede llegar a contaminar entre mil y un millón de litros de agua, dependiendo de las condiciones ambientales este capaz de crear una capa sobre la superficie del agua que dificulta el paso de oxígeno pudiendo matar a los seres vivos de los ríos, canales o mares.

Objetivo general: Nuestro objetivo es informarnos y platicar con nuestra familia acerca de las consecuencias que tiene tirar aceite al desagüe, para así implementar las acciones necesarias y reducir el problema en nuestros hogares.

Objetivo particular o específico: Comenzar a guardar el aceite que ya no nos sirve en una botella de plástico limpia, para ir acumulándolo paulatinamente, posteriormente podemos entregarlo a campañas de recolección de aceite como las que se encuentran en nuestro plantel “Lic Adolfo López Mateos” ayudando al medio ambiente y cooperando con la sociedad.

Sustento teórico

• Aceite: Sustancia grasa de origen mineral, vegetal o animal, líquida, insoluble en agua, combustible y generalmente menos densa que el agua, que está constituida por ésteres de ácidos grasos o por hidrocarburos derivados del petróleo. (Oxford Languages and Google - Spanish | Oxford Languages, 2022)

• Agua: El agua es una sustancia que se compone por dos átomos de hidrógeno y un átomo de oxígeno (H2O) y se puede encontrar en estado sólido (hielo), gaseoso (vapor) y líquido (agua). Las propiedades físicas y químicas del agua son muy importantes para la supervivencia de los ecosistemas. (Valdivielso, 2023)

• Reciclaje: El reciclaje es el proceso de recolección y transformación de materiales para convertirlos en nuevos productos. BBVA. Comunication (2023)

• Contaminación del agua: La contaminación del agua ocurre cuando sustancias nocivas, a menudo productos químicos o microorganismos, contaminan un arroyo, río, lago, océano, acuífero u otro cuerpo de agua, degradando su calidad y volviéndola tóxica para los seres humanos o el medio ambiente. (¿Cómo nos afecta la contaminación del agua?, s. f.)

• Materiales contaminantes: Definición: Una sustancia que se encuentra en un medio al cual no pertenece o que lo hace a niveles que pueden causar efectos (adversos) para la salud o el medio ambiente. (Glosario: contaminante(s), s. f.)

• Estación depuradora de aguas residuales: Una estación depuradora de aguas residuales puede definirse como el conjunto de instalaciones que tiene por objeto la reducción de la contaminación de las aguas residuales hasta límites aceptables para el cauce receptor (EDAR). (Fundación Aquae, 2021)

Teórico

El aceite es una sustancia no biodegradable, que al llegar a ríos o mares perjudica a la vida acuática y propicia la proliferación de microorganismos dañinos para la salud. Ya que no se mezcla con el agua, se queda encima de ella, formando una capa que impide la correcta oxigenación de las aguas. (¿Por qué no debes tirar aceite de cocina usado al desagüe?, s. f.)

El principal problema reside en la contaminación de las aguas residuales urbanas.

La grasa, debido a su característica aglutinante, genera bolos que producen importantes atascos en las cabeceras de las canalizaciones de la red de aguas residuales. Teniendo en cuenta que un litro de aceite de cocina puede contaminar de 10,000 a 40,000 litros de agua, la cual no podrá ser tratada y está inevitablemente contaminada (Aquae, 2021)

Por otro lado, estos vertidos contribuyen a la reproducción de bacterias nocivas en las tuberías, lo que a su vez produce un aumento de plagas urbanas y a la generación de malos olores en las casas. Se estima que cada consumidor genera al año unos cuatro litros de aceite doméstico usado. (Aquea, 2021b)

Teniendo en cuenta que el Estado de México tiene 17,934,893 e estado genera 71,739,572 litros de aceite vegetal anualmente (Coespo. 2019)

Para tener datos un poco más específicos y concretos acerca del tema tomamos una muestra de la población que nos rodea, haciendo una serie de preguntas a 16 personas para poder saber con más certeza información, respaldando nuestra investigación.

Jurídico

Para brindar seguridad del correcto desecho del aceite existen fundamentos jurídicos explícitas en la Ley General Del Equilibrio Ecológico y la Protección al Ambiente, que nos permiten sentar bases en la solución y existencia del problema:

ARTÍCULO 121.

-

“No podrán descargarse o infiltrarse en cualquier cuerpo o corriente de agua o en el suelo o subsuelo, aguas residuales que contengan contaminantes, sin previo tratamiento y el permiso o autorización de la autoridad federal, o de la autoridad local en los casos de descargas en aguas de jurisdicción local o a los sistemas de drenaje y alcantarillado de los centros de población.” Ley General Del Equilibrio Ecológico y la Protección al Ambiente [LGEEPA]. Art. 121. 08 de mayo de 2023 (México).

Esta medida establece la necesidad de tratar y obtener permisos antes de verter sustancias contaminantes en cuerpos de agua, suelos o sistemas de drenaje, con el objetivo de prevenir la contaminación y proteger el entorno natural y la salud de la población.

ARTÍCULO 139.

-

“Toda descarga, depósito o infiltración de sustancias o materiales contaminantes en los suelos se sujetará a lo que disponga esta Ley, la Ley de Aguas

Nacionales, sus disposiciones reglamentarias y las normas oficiales mexicanas que para tal efecto expida la Secretaría.” Ley General Del Equilibrio Ecológico y la Protección al Ambiente [LGEEPA]. Art. 121. 08 de mayo de 2023 (México).

Esta ley no sólo especifica el mal uso de materiales contaminantes en el agua sino también expone una protección ante el recurso natural, además establece un marco legal integral para prevenir la contaminación tanto del agua como del suelo en México. Se asegura de que las personas y las empresas que realicen actividades que puedan contaminar el suelo. Esta disposición es esencial para garantizar un manejo adecuado de las sustancias contaminantes y para prevenir daños ambientales, lo que a su vez contribuye a mantener la calidad del agua y la salud de los suelos en México.

Propuesta de solución

Nuestra propuesta de solución es informarnos e informar a las personas que viven con nosotros sobre las consecuencias que existen al tirar aceites o grasas al desagüe, llevar a cabo un correcto procesamiento del aceite vegetal que ya "no tiene uso" en nuestras casas y tratar de fomentar campañas de correcto desecho de aceites y grasas en nuestra comunidad. Asimismo, divulgar esta información en redes mostrando los beneficios que conlleva correcto desecho del aceite. Indicando que el aceite que se usa en las cocinas puede ser guardada en una botella para después llevarlas a plantas que puedan tratar correctamente el aceite vegetal o llevarlo a una campaña de recolección de aceite para así beneficiarnos entre todos y cuidar un recurso tan fundamental como es el agua.

Conclusión

Entendemos que esta problemática se encuentra en más de un hogar por lo tanto nos interesa informarnos y hacer conciencia acerca de las consecuencias que puede llegar a generar, este estudio llama la atención del público ya que se encuentra directamente ligado a nuestras casas más específico a nuestras cocinas sobre el problema vertido en el aceite de cocina usado que posteriormente es desechado al desagüe, tanto para el medio ambiente como para la infraestructura sanitaria, donde al desechar aceite de cocina por la tubería genéranos gastos extra parar la empresa de aguas residuales, Además del daño irreversible que le genera al agua, haciendo reflexión que este es valorado por su recolección y posteriormente lleva a cabo un procesamiento para producir biodisel, jabones, velas entre otros, impulsando la actividad económica y evitando tener problemas ambientales a futuro, dando a entender que si nos informamos y tomando acción podemos disminuir nuestra huella contaminante.

Day 516 - 519 (1 year, 152 - 155 days)

Heya! How are we doing today? Just a quick update since the next quest released today. ^^

So the teens actually gotta clear out trials. They are obviously not prepared and very silly about it, much to the Guide's dismay. X]

Genuinely love the cape the guide has. It looks so fluffy. Makes me wish I had a season pass but oh well.

The next quest actually takes place in the river area inside the forest. One of the spirit masks leads to a small circle to sit in, which will turn it night time. This also leads to a small social gathering area again which only surrounds the mask. The quest is actually a timed event that everyone takes part in at the same time.

Also you get a new outfit and mask for the time being. Looks stylish. ^^

The quest itself plays similar to the AURORA questline. The mask has an area around it which you have to stay in. But additionally you also have the task of picking up junk that lies around, while traversing the river area and trying to stay close to the mask. Cleanup duty for the kids. X]

It does fit the game's environmental message though. Perfect with Days of Nature.

The area does also get a few additional assets to get over the giant gaps, without having to fly. Turns the area a bit into a jump and run section. Hope future quests get something like this. ^^

After the quest is done you return to the guide and add a bit to the memorial. Wonder how it will look at the end. Next quest is in two weeks though.

After that the guide offers you a mask for purchase as well. It's based on this quest's spirit mask. The spirit mask made sheep noises during the quest so I guess this is supossed to be a sheep or goat.

Actually the wiki says it's a Serow. It's an animal similar to a goat. Huh, this game really teaches you about new animals all the time.

Anyway the mask is very stylish! I like the dark and bright blue contrast. I still prefer the more simple masks but these definitely are something I keep in mind. ^^

And that has been it for today. Love the season so far. Hope the future quests are great as well. I will see you then. :D

Dracula characters based on how likely they would be to eat a worm

Jack Seward There’s scarcely anyone in this story more likely to eat a worm than Jack Seward. As an experiment? Yeah, sure. When he was bullied at school? Almost certainly. Because a somewhat overbearing father figure suggested it? Without question. This man has eaten a worm before and he would do so again.

Arthur Holmwood Arthur is the son of a Lord, the Victorian 1%, one of the most wealthy and privileged individuals in one of the most wealthy and privileged countries in the world. Until the events of the novel, do we think Arthur Holmwood, future Lord Godalming, ever had to do anything he didn’t want to? Even in the horrors of the Victorian public school system, rank has its privileges. He would not eat a worm.

Quincey Morris An adventurous type like Quincey? He wouldn’t just eat a worm, he’d fry it in a little butter and cayenne pepper and do his best to enjoy it.

Lucy Westenra as a human I was going to say absolutely not. Surely she would be horrified at the very idea. But equally, Lucy is by far the biggest people-pleaser in the whole novel, even more so than Jonathan ‘What a pretty colour all these red flags are’ Harker. If she thought eating a worm would make someone she loved happy, she’d dig right in.

Lucy Westenra as the Bloofer Lady Small children have been known to eat worms, and Lucy has been known to eat small children. So indirectly, yes, she would eat a worm.

Jonathan Harker It strikes me that we don’t know much about the eating habits of any of the characters in this novel – for instance, we know which pub Jack Seward likes, but not what he eats when he’s there.

But we have a wealth of information about Jonathan, and we know he is the kind of man who will have an unfamiliar paprika dish for dinner, have “queer dreams”, then go down for breakfast and have even more paprika.

Jonathan Harker would eat a worm.

Mina Harker née Murray Mina would do anything for her friends and loved ones, and that includes eating a worm. But come on guys, really? You would force Mina to eat a worm after everything she’s been through? You monsters.

Van Helsing Van Helsing thinks astral projection is real and parrots live forever. He’s the first person to consider the possibility that Lucy is being vampired. This man has the most open mind in the entire novel. He is a deeply weird individual and he would definitely eat a worm.

Mrs Westenra Mrs Westenra is a respectable Victorian lady of the upper-middle or upper-classes, and under no circumstances would she eat a worm.

Unless it was the last-ditch treatment for her ailing daughter, I guess.

Dracula You know the song you might have sung as a kid – “nobody likes me, everybody hates me, think I’ll go and eat worms?”

We know Dracula eats solicitors and Lucys, he doesn’t eat worms. But he should.

IIRC, one of the standard academic takes on Dracula is that Mina is rewarded for being a dutiful wife (she learns shorthand, she travels to Budapest) and Lucy suffers for not being that (she has three suitors and wishes she could marry them all, etc).

Today's entry, and the commentary around it, makes me realise how little that holds up, so far at least. Lucy is so painfully dutiful - to her future husband, to her mother, to her friends, to her doctor - and all it's done is made her more vulnerable.

If she eloped with Arthur right now, she might be safe.

If she risked being honest with her mother, she might be safe.

If she put anyone to even slightly more trouble (Arthur, Jack, the servants) and had them stay up with her, she might be safe.

But she behaves like the ideal of a Victorian woman, always deferring to other people and putting their needs first. And that's why she's in so much danger tonight.
