We keep talking about jealous Buck and how Eddie is going to assure him he's not being replaced but how about we talk about jealous Buck and how that makes Eddie feel?? Can you imagine, if that's what gets Eddie going?? Like, he's over there thinking fuck, this man is literally so hot for me he's going feral because I'm friends with some dude. Can you imagine Eddie liking this side of Buck? Liking the fact that someone loves him enough that they're getting possessive of him? And even as he assures Buck (which he always will), he can't help but think he wouldn't mind Buck being jealous over him again and staking a claim on him? Like, he's Buck's and Buck is his. There's nothing or no-one who can change that but the thrill that shoots up his spine at the thought of Buck staking a claim on him makes him go oh, O H. No one has ever fought for him before. Shannon chose to leave (twice) and Ana didn't even put up a fight (not that he wanted to but still) and here is Buck, they're not even together and he's all bothered by this guy who's apparently getting too chummy with Eddie and while everyone doesn't think twice about leaving Eddie behind, here is Buck, choosing Eddie, fighting for him, getting jealous and possessive over him, to keep him in his life and fuck if that doesn't make Eddie feel all kinds of thrilled.

They'll never be Hardzellolee(?) still hanging out and seeing each other's movies and going on occasional holidays five years on. They'll never be so tongue in cheek and loving and silly about the way they bait us.

Yuu was brought to Twisted Wonderland with their childhood pet as their familiar. Turns out bearded dragons are actual dragons in twisted wonderland. 

A Familiar Pet

~Ramshackle Dorm (during prologue) ~

The headmaster fluttered out the door, abandoning the world traveler to the decrepit building. They open their cloke to the reptile clinging to their chest, at least they had their beared dragon with them.

The building began to creak as rain started vail the outside. Droplets falling on Yuu’s head through the holes in the roof.

“How am I going to keep you warm?” a finger ran across the scales. Yuu’s head tilts, eyes squint taking in the pet that has been with them for the last 5 years.

“Smaug… when did you get wings?”

“GWAH! It's pouring out there!”

A flaming ball shatters one of the few complete windows. The blue-eared cat from earlier skids through the dust piled on the floor.

“Fu–” A tsunami of dust roared toward Yuu, filling their lugs. Coughs rumbled and ricocheted through them, body shaking with each gasp of breath.

“Bwahaha! That look on your face is priceless! Like a bat that got blasted by a water gun.” The jab at his human puffed Smuag up. His claws loosening his hold on their shirt.

“As if I wouldn't just sneak back onto campus the second I escaped pryin' eyes. You all got no idea what I'm capable of-”

A blur of tan slammed into the annoying cat. Hissing. Puffing. Sparking.

Then the ghosts appeared.

With the ghosts and Crowley gone, Yuu turns to the other two creatures in the dorm. A smile stretched across their face as they rushed toward them.

“You’re absolutely amazing!”

Grim shakes his fur out. Crossing his arms with a grin.

“Why, yes, I am.”

Yuu rushes past him to the sleepy tan dragon on the floor.

“Holy shit, you can breathe fire! You impressive little ball of sass! You are an amazing lizard aren't you”

“Hey, human! I can breathe fire too!”

Yuu dead eyes the cat.

“Smaug is mine. Which immediately makes him better than you.”

“No Smaug! You already ate 2 raspberries you need to eat the rest of your food.”

The dragon puffs up all two feet of himself. The underside of him darkened.

“Don’t you puff up at me!”

Ace tries to slip another raspberry onto Smuag’s plate. Yuu smacks his hand with a glare. Sparks began to blink in the dragon's mouth.

“No, no, no! No fire!”

~Ramshackel During SDC~

Vil dogges another ember as he enters Ramshackel’s common room.

“Yuu! Your familiar keeps trying to light me on fire.”

Yuu flips to the next page of Professor Crewel’s homework.

“You're the one that placed a curse on anything that is high in sugar”

Amatheth eyes narrow. Painted lips twitch to a frown.

“What does that have to do with Smaug?”

Eyebrows raise as luminescent eyes blink. Yuu tilts their head back to look at Vil.

“That included his berries in the fridge”

An immaculately shaped eyebrow raises as he side-steps more sparks. Yuu sighs and stretches their arms.

“Look, I have been dealing with a pissed-off familiar for the past week. If this makes him easier to handle, I’m going to let it happen. Especially since I can’t give him the berries to behave.”

Yuu stands and turns to Vil. Eyes blazing as a crocked smile full of gritted teeth stretches across their face.

“This could have been avoided, if you uncursed the berries like I asked the first night you all got here.”

Lizard’s Queer Space Opera Collection

What time is it? It’s ✨ lizard talks about queer sci-fi ✨ time

My family don’t understand how much joy I get from queer stories, and none of my close friend really read space operas (at least not with the same voracity that I do), so I’m appearing here to pass my knowledge on to you, the void that is my blog.

I read a lot of space operas, and I’ve had the incredible luck that the last handful I’ve picked up have been joyfully queer (or maybe we’re just seeing a shift in the sci-fi publishing world. I love it.). This isn’t a comprehensive list or anything, and this isn’t limited to pure space operas, but they are some of my favorites. Hope I can convince some of you to read a couple (and if you do or have read any, please come and shout at me! I want to talk about them! Always!)

I originally wrote these out for my Instagram, and I can’t really be bothered to retype it all so below the cut are my quick descriptions/thoughts on each of the books, but I’ll chuck the list here too

If you like graphic novels, please give On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden a shot, it's really lovely and quiet and feels like a big warm space hug.

Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado is a collection of horror short stories, some of which border on scifi, which is why it didn't make it into the main list, but I highly recommend it. My copy was given to me by the lovely @markcampbells

I Sexually Identify as an Attack Helicopter has a bit of a history due to its presentation of gender, and the author actually asked for it to be removed from the Clarkesworld magazine due to the hate comments she was receiving. Still, if you can find it I highly recommend it, as it is genuinely very good.

The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer is. Wow it sure is a book that emotionally damaged me. It's about two boys (men? they're 17 but it doesn't feel like a YA book, except int he good ways) who are on a spaceship heading out to Titan to attempt a rescue mission on Earth's first extraterrestrial colony. There are a lot of feels and ouch.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, by Claire North. This book isn't a space opera, but it is somewhat sci-fi? anyway, Harry August is one of my favourite books of all time, and it explores a man trapped in what is almost a timeloop, except that time-loop is his whole life. each time he dies he's reborn right back where he started, and it's only through his and the other people like him's actions that the world is ever changed in each repeat.

The Culture series, Iain M Banks. I put this one on the list with a good bit of trepidation and the warning of: these books were written by a (supposedly) cishet white man, and almost all of his protagonists are…nearly cishet white men (with a couple women thrown in in later books). The same can not be said for literally every other character, who are almost entirely trans and bisexual. These books really gave me my love for space operas and if you're a fan of the genre I recommend. Also, the AIs here are amazing. Let us not forget the Ship "Mistake Not My Current State Of Joshing Gentle Peevishness For The Awesome And Terrible Majesty Of The Towering Seas Of Ire That Are Themselves The Mere Milquetoast Shallows Fringing My Vast Oceans Of Wrath". They're great.

(I’m also going to add, I would not recommend his normal fiction. I’ve read two, The Wasp Factory which kind of scarred and disturbed me, and Transitions which was just plain bad. Maybe I picked a bad selection, but I can only in good conscience recommend his sci-fi.)
