Cyrus Coming Out (1st Time) - s2 ep1 "Hey, Who Wants Pizza?"
Don't know what it is about this scene, but even though it's been years since it first aired, I still get chills when I watch it. Something about the emotion and the support that comes from Buffy, just gets to me. Not to mention it was SUPER unexpected at the time, especially since this is Disney we're talking about.
I absolutely love Cyrus' arc from here out, despite it being mainly in the background. From his unrequited feeling's for Jonah, to his requited feelings for TJ, and ESPECIALLY to his closeness and bond with Buffy who supported him through everything (plus Andi to a lesser degree, but still prominent!). Cyrus is one of the best queer Disney characters represented on Disney Channel itself, in comparison to their countless queer shows/characters on Disney+.
And the fact that they didn't over or under do it, was a nice touch to it all (even though I personally don't mind "in your face" queer characters).
I just really wish more people watched this show, and would talk about Cyrus as a character more often. I feel like I really only see people not knowing the show, or calling it cringe these days. I like our small community, but it still bums me out sometimes.
Just one Tyrus mention Disney, please 😔

1/2 In a recent interview Meg said about working with Matt on s3 that: "most of OUR scenes were together". This doesn't look good for Portwell... What really annoys me is that it means they spent most of EJ's scenes with a character that won't appear in future seasons, instead of the wildcats... It's not even about the romantic ships... give me more of Ashlyn and EJ, or Carlos and EJ... we barely saw these characters interact and this season was a perfect opportunity...
2/2 Also, making most of his scenes with her makes me think that he will probably won't appear in the next seasons... It looks like they're preparing him to leave...
have you read that new interview with meg? she mentioned that most of her scenes and matt's were together- I think it's time we start saying goodbye....(this is another anon but putting these asks t/g)
I answer some of yall’s concerns in this post (give it a read if you can!) Just to clarify for you, anon(s), this is exactly what Meg said in the article, "most of our scenes were together so that was really cool." Just because most of Meg's scenes as Val were with Matt as EJ, doesn't automatically mean most of EJ's scenes were with Val. We have to keep in mind EJ is a main, meaning he's gonna get more screen time than Val (a guest star) and will share scenes with multiple characters. I deff agree I hope to see more Caswell cousins content and EJ bonding with the boys this season. I just love those diff dynamics outside of the romantic relationships, too! For the concerns about EJ sharing “most” of his scenes with Val, I wouldn’t worry too much about that b/c that doesn’t mean the same as Val being the one to share most of her scenes with EJ. Being a guest star, in only 8 episodes spanning 2 weeks, Val won’t be prioritized the way EJ will be as a main character. Sure, we’ll probably be introduced to Val thru EJ, and she may very well cause a ton of drama, but she might also help EJ’s character cont to progress in S3. One last thing that’s not included in my previous post: Don’t underestimate the power of Disney. Zombies 3 and S3 are premiering a week and a half apart. Of course Matt and Meg will have a ton of promo to do for these projects, and it makes sense they’d share a lot of scenes together. We’re gonna see Matt in Zombies 3 first, then see Meg in S3 soon after that. Disney is gonna wanna promote both projects as much as possible  (esp in July) so it would make sense Meg had a lot of scenes w/ Matt. I believe they wrapped Zombies 3 last June, then started filming HSMTMTS S3 about 6 or 7 months later. Having Meg and Matt share scenes (in both universes) gives Disney the chance to get ppl hyped about both projects. Remember when Asher Angel guest starred as Jack in S2? And all his scenes were with Sofia (Gina)? Disney gave us a mini-Andi Mack reunion in the best way possible (I missed the Buffy and Jonah banter LOL). We knew Sofia and Asher would probably share most of their scenes together, right? Did that mean the end for Portwell? Did Jack stand in the way of a potential PW relationship? No. Jack was used as a plot device to help further them along lmaooo Isn’t it possible Val may function in the same way? I know she’s in more episodes than him but they’ve already used two plot devices in the form of guest stars to help further develop Portwell. I wouldn’t be surprised if Val/Meg serves the same kinda role in S3.

Hi, just wanted to ask will you be watching season 4 and what were your thoughts on both portwell and r*na's development? What about all of them as characters? I personally was rooting for r*na in season 1. But after watching most of season 2, I prefer portwell and probably won't watch season 3 after the mess they made. I'd have been okay with r*na if the narrative made sense but sorry to say Gina has been a "maybe" to Ricky. She picked the guy she wanted since S1, but she seems to forget he's not really deserving of her attention at all after he's blown her off and asked her for relationship advice knowing she liked him. Like come on do better girl.
hey, thanks for the ask! hope you're well, anon.
i'll answer this as briefly and structured as i possibly can but i highly doubt it lmao. possible rant ahead (?)
okay so s4... i can't say that i won't tune in because essentially, i'm a huge sofia wylie fan. i've loved her since andi mack and everything she's ever put out with disney, i've watched (plus sge). and aside from that, the s4 plot (the whole og hsm movie reunion thing/wildcats being extras on the movie) is being hyped up a lot and i'm intrigued to see how that plays out. outside of the triangle, i love kourtney, carlos, ash, jet and maddox as characters. i'd probably just scroll thru hsmtmts twitter posts/tumblr tags to see the scenes/discourse/takes and use it to determine whether i'd watch or not. i've abandoned more shows (esp ongoing ones) than i have finished so... we'll see.
if you want me to be honest, gina is the reason i shipped portwell. in s1, the only person from the core four i truly rooted for was gina. i couldn't care less about ricky, nini and ej characters and plotlines (plus their weird 'love triangle'). i wouldn't call myself a rina in s1, but i was rooting for gina's character to be more vulnerable and possibly finding romance. she's this tough girl who's never really fit in because she had to move so much and i truly sympathized with her. in that homecoming scene with ricky, i actually did feel chemistry between them. now looking back, it's probably just sofia and joshua's acting that made that scene more that it actually was. but by the end of s1, it's clear rini was that season's endgame. i mean, the main plot of s1 was ricky being in the play to get nini back. i also believe they were going to be endgame if olivia hadn't left. and before anyone says s2 was filmed before driver's license and sour blew up, i know! but just think about it: with 'all i want' doing well and blowing up on tiktok the previous year and olivia working with a producer at interscope records (not under disney) for her new album since 2020, i think she was planning to move on to music before the script was written. hence ricky and nini's plotline for a 'final' breakup.
moving on to s2... in s2, i didn't like how in 2a gina's whole storyline was crying/pining over ricky who doesn't really reach out to her after the one exercise where gina rejects him. up to 205, i understood ricky might've been conflicted and confused about gina's feelings for him, he had his relatioship with nini and his family drama to worry about. but since that whole 'plane crash' scene pretty much checks out as a confession, it just didn't make sense for ricky to act the way he did in 205. after the whole "if you and i were dating..." thing he pulled, i could not ship rina at all. all the doors i had open for them, i shut. he was so out of line and so disrespectful. he only cared about nini in that scene (while also stepping over nini's boundaries about being in the play). and c'mon, this boy at least knows gina and him are at this weird stage where they aren't purely friends and there's feelings involved. so why would he say that? now, when i saw ej and gina's scene in the same episode, they got me immediately. and it all sort of aligned with their history and personalities—overconfident, 'anti-hero', ex-scheming partners. now that i think about it, i didn't like rina before i loved portwell. and portwell? well, i think they're neat. midgame ship this, plot device that, i don't really mind. i'm thankful for their development in 2b because it was a breath of fresh air for someone who loves and roots for gina. and ej grew on me, too. in s1 he was this straight up himbo disney villain for but in s2 he was given more dimension in his character, had relatable struggles and we were shown a more vulnerable and attentive side to him. my top reason for shipping pw is the fact they started becoming better people together and they got each other because of that. the whole 'new ej' and 'gina 2.0' thing was probably a happy accident, hence why tim didn't really dig further into that. but on the other hand, they're different in a lot of ways. gina wants to settle down in one place and ej doesn't know what he wants—we even find that he wants to break free from the mold his dad wants him to be. i wish that would be something they help each other out with—he is her constant and comfort and she's the person who grounds and challenges him. instead, it becomes a point where they fail (looking at you, s3!). and whether you are a rina/pw anti, there's no denying ej treated gina like a queen in s2. portwell in 205-210 will always have me by the neck. and even though 211 and 212 makes me recoil, i personally don't blame ej for tapping out from their date with the whole 'brother' thing. just like gina, he's scared of putting himself out there to get hurt.
now, s3. i like to joke about the fact that it didn't exist but honestly? minus the triangle, it was pretty entertaining and funny. i liked maddox's character a lot in particular, she reminds me of me. i loved that kourtney has a character arc. i love ej more after watching s3, he's become one of my fav characters. now, i don't know if i'll get booed for this by the pws but i wish pw would have not been a couple while gina is still in hs. not because of the whole age gap thing (which is ridiculous), but i genuinely think they'd suit that bff-to-lovers slow burn. thank god i have tsbu because the way tsbu!pw plays out is exactly how i imagined it would be. but alas, we see portwell deteriorate in s3. and ofc it was painful to witness but less so because they felt off to me. they weren't really the s2 pw i knew and loved. trust me i don't say this bc they broke up, i say it's the lack of banter and moments of vulnerability (which they should have more of bc they're a couple here!). also the ej caswell i know would've broken the rules and took gina as a date, honestly. like, he literally gave a girl food poisoning so he can star in a show with nini. now, i do believe that gina and ej being in different phases of their lives was a good reason for their breakup, she's got 2 years of hs left and his world is getting bigger than just hs. i mean, like i said before, i wished they'd have that two-year, slow-burn best friends-to-lovers arc. my biggest problem with ej and gina's story was the execution. there were hundreds of ways to write them being right person/wrong time and they'd still mean a lot to each other etc. i'd actually be okay with them ending. but with the whole 'i can't be a maybe anymore' and 'can it really be over, if it never got the chance to start?' rubs me the wrong way. it's like tim really wanted everyone to see that ej is at fault here (despite whatever tim's saying in interviews) when he's doing all of this so his girlfriend and his friends would 1) have a great summer in this place that's really important to him and 2) have this great opportunity to be on disney+, which is a huge deal. specifically, for gina, he wanted to make a good show bc we all know how much finally being casted as a lead is important to her. ej could've just walked away, given up and let this thing fall into shambles, but he didn't. it didn't just cost him time with gina, it costed him his whole summer. it was all weird writing for me. and as for rina? firstly, i find it odd that the rinas were rooting for gina emotionally cheating on ej. even sofia said that gina's not that type of girl and she genuinely wanted her and ej to work. personally, i didn't find ricky pining for gina cute at all. ik a lot of people see it as a parallel for season 2a when gina secretly pines over ricky while he's still with nini. but the context here is different now, isn't it? gina never received a confession (or any sort of sign ricky wanted to be around her) before she got with ej. in fact, ricky was busy with lily and was close enough with her to spend summer with her and her parents in florida?? like i don't know, it just feels like ricky's feelings stemmed out of nowhere which made it seem shallow and not the epic love tim is pushing it to be. again, sofia and josh are great actors, the wdykal scene had so much chemistry but it was just that. the context/history of rina is extremely shallow to me. they needed val to say 'yup, he's genuinely heartsick' instead of just letting josh's acting show it. another thing i should mention is the instances where ricky was so passive-aggressive about ej and gina. the part where jet ran off and they needed a hans to sing liaod with anna (gina), he was going to volunteer to step in because he had feelings for her and was visibly pissed off when cordon told ej to sub for jet. and there's ricky slapping ej, which was an ick moment bc it made him seem entitled rather than badass.
lastly, that one shot of him finding out nini was at camp? "nini's here?" yeah? that one scene had more emotional fuel than ricky spending the whole two weeks max crushing on gina. it sort of set back the whole rina development, i have to say it.
speaking of nini, her sendoff wasn't as satisfying as i expected it to be. in s3, i'd prefer it if she moved to california because she got a record deal or something? since s3 was already so meta, that would've been much better than her moving out to cali because her moms wanted to. back to s1, i feel like she was your stereotypical shy, main character with the usual 'gaining confidence' arc and that arc was sort of boring and overdone for me. but in s2 i really enjoyed her branching out to songwriting and stepping side to help out others. plus, i think people skip over how awful ricky was to her as well. first, he takes a break and feels entitled to get her back and second, he genuinely started suffocating the poor girl in s2. well, at least he realized it, though. again, when people say rini was toxic, it's really just ricky. nini did nothing wrong in s1-2. i don't think the rose song was even about ricky, he just made it into something it wasn't supposed to be. i sincerely hope ricky loses this behaviour in s4.
anyway! end of rant. these are just my thoughts. if anyone agrees or disagrees, it's up to them. i genuinely hope gina is happy next season, bc before i was a pw stan i was a gina stan (even though she was a little ooc in s3). if it means rina being happy, i won't be so mad. at the end of the day, this is just a silly disney show and it’s all for entertainment. i do love portwell but i rather tim never touch them again, honestly. canon pw is already ruined for me, though i wouldn't mind a proper portwell closure scene in s4.
that was a lot more words than i expected lmaoo, but if anyone read all of that, cool! if not, that's cool, too. it was very cathartic.

At this point, the ideal scenario is if Mike and Will are already together before the events of season 5 start. Then we get flashbacks showing how they first opened up to each other, and snippets of their secret nerd romance. If they’re STILL hiding their true feelings next season (the last damn season), then I don’t give a shit. It’ll just be “Andi Mack” all over again, with straight non-endgame couples getting most of the screen time. We deserve to SEE a happy gay couple for more than 1 scene.
i actually disagree. i wouldnt like it opening up with them already an established couple even if they do go back and explain how they got together and how mlvn broke up. it would completely rationalize everyones “this came outta nowhere” stance on byler. they need to fully show the mlvn break up as well. it would make no sense to skip over that even if they reveal it later.
also it would be so anticlimactic if it just starts out with them already together. whats the fun in that!! i wanna see their journey mostly mikes because we havent gotten in his head since like s1, maybe s2. i wanna see their first kiss and wanna watch them build up to that! i wanna see mike slowly becoming more honest with himself and his feelings and finally accepting who he is and honestly im okay if that takes almost an entire season but i’d prefer if at the latest, they kiss on the second to last episode, not the very last. but i’d like a lot if it was more like jancy where it happens mid season (but with a concrete mlvn break up first unlike stancy). and then i think we’ll definitely get an epilogue for every character and that would include them being happy together too.
i just dont want it to literally be the last like 20 minutes of the show, especially considering that would barely leave any time to show them coming out to everyone. i would have loved if they got together at the end of s4 and all of s5 they were together.

this is so true and it’s frankly infuriating how some n*ni stans (mostly l*v stans) want to credit the shows success onto ol*via and have been awful to sofia lately. when the wdykal duet came out they wanted to talk about rin* duets and now they want to talk about n*ni being "the female lead that carried the show!" no, she did not. i like l*v & nini but sofia was carrying the acting of that show in her back and still is. she was the only recognizable face of the show at the time because andi mack was so popular. sofia getting her moment to shine was long overdue. it’s been so sad seeing all the low key racist comments lately. "she looks like ol*via" "she’s getting her moment because ol*via left". rina is not a thing because olivia left. rina has been a thing and was always going to be a thing because tim switched the writing when he noticed the chemistry. like i will need those liv stans that tuned into the show on s2 for the drama to stop watching the show and stop disrespecting sofia.
nothing but facts spoken anon!!!!
not so secret fact about me that most people know, i LOVE olivia like i am such a huge fan of her and everything she does, and i LOVED nini as a character.
but what i’m NEVER going to do is disrespect the reason i even know about hsmtmts at ALL which is because of miss sofia wylie. i’ve known and loved sofia way way way longer than any of the other cast members of this show, and for so many of this shows original fans SHE is the reason that we even watch.
i strongly believe that without her there is no fanbase, there is no core group of people who spent countless hours online in 2019 defending this show to all the people who said it was going to be awful and said it was going to ruin the hsm movies. the original fanbase who was here because of sofia is the concrete foundation to all that is the hsmtmts fandom today and i will not stand for the way people drag my girl through the mud, it’s so frustrating.

ASK 2. I will talk about ships now. Personally, I can’t say I am on board with any of them (canon or not canon, but where there were hinted romantic feelings). Like yes, I enjoy some cute moments but I can’t say any of the ships got me invested. That doesn’t mean they are not written in a good way (seeing so many ppl liking them), they just are not for me and that’s it (you’ll see why).
I am number 1 fan of the trope enemies to lovers (and in this fandom only two ships have that trope: GinaxNini and EJxRicky). Like give me anything and an enemies to lovers plotline and I’ll choose the latter, always. So yeah, the fun theory is if the writers say sth like: screw this, we are switching 180 degrees and make these two ships canon (or at least one of them since Olivia won’t be sm on the show; for Gina they could bring Jack back in s4-5, like imagine the Andy Mack fandom; they would be thrilled; the video with most likes in the Gina tag on tiktok is the one with Jack, so yeah). I will say this for the ppl who say that pw or rina have that trope. Nope. They don’t. EJ was at most annoyed with Gina, and about Ricky and Gina, there was literally one scene where Ricky was already pissed bc of EJ and he took that anger on Gina (I find it funny that Gina took that anger from Ricky on EJ when she poured the drink on his head). Ricky was annoyed that EJ found a date so easily. He envied EJ bc that it is exactly what he wanted to do that night, to put himself out there and hated that for EJ it was so easy. When Big Red tells Ricky at the table that he can learn from EJ, he replies with sth like: “Ty for defending my mortal enemy”. Coming back to rina, the conflict is resolved really quickly and it wasn’t that big to call them enemies. The pw conflict was a little longer, but again, none of these conflicts scream enemies to me (for both ships). I’m sorry but it’s not enough. Like compare the RickyxEJ dynamic to either one of this and tell me it’s the same level. They hated each other bc of Nini, EJ hated him bc of the play and they pissed each other off bc they were envious of the other one. They saw in the other person qualities they don’t have.
I would be invested in either one of these crackships bc of the trope, the unexpected plot twist and the fact that I think these characters complement each other and can work well together (funny GinaxNini thought: Gina was able to give Ricky helpful advices when they were about Nini, and not when they were about his personal pbs (the one in ep 1x7); so yeah, usually when someone (person A) gives relationship advice to person B about person C and they work, it proves that person A and person C can work together; it’s simple math, transitivity).
Now coming back to reality, I really wish they’d develop EJ and Ricky’s friendship (but I am afraid they will get maximum a nice convo and kinda that’s it (if they get one)). I am speaking from what I saw the writers did with their s2 interactions. But, maybe, the writers will surprise me, who knows. Speaking of Nini and Gina, there is less hope. Maybe they will talk to each other bc of Jamie. Idk. Anything is possible.
I am curious to see your opinion about these crackships. I wanted to do analyses for both ships and talk about a hypothetical future that can work with the current story (that’s why I said in the first ask that I will go from that premise; I wanted to make one for Nini too (even though for her is less realistic)). Idk if I am still going to do that in the near future, maybe I’ll return at some point.
So yeah, from what you see, regarding ships my hopes are pure delusion and I admit that. Honestly, all I want for this show is to get in a direction where all the characters find their happiness and their potential isn’t wasted (and since you noticed I’m an EJ stan, I hope that they will keep him in the show in a manner that doesn’t waste his potential).
alrighty part 3! i'm really getting through these fairly well and i'm kinda impressed with myself for it haha.
--
the only ship that i'm like- really and truly properly invested in for this show was rini and that's fine- i bought the narrative being sold to me for that one haha, and i don't always. i'm a huge sucker for childhood best friends to lovers and while they could've done a better job with displaying that narrative- that detail about them sold me even more on a ship i was already getting into.
but yeah different people just like different tropes and different ships and that's okay! my ship is dead, and i'm well aware of that given the fact they're almost certainly writing nini out. so like- it's probably time for my brain to pivot but i'm not ready so here we are. i'm down to wait and see whatever the show decides to do, but we shall see how it goes and if anything can give me the same feeling as rini does...
--
enemies to lovers is complicated- but i think on a show like this it's always more rivals rather than enemies in any circumstance. an enemy is like- i want a fight to the death. but that's just me being nitpicky haha.
that said, taking the term more loosely, what do we need for people to be rivals? the mutualness of having a rivalry is where nini and gina fail that definition, because in season 1, which is when they don't get along, it was definitely more of just gina acting maliciously towards nini than an actual rivarly because it's not mutual. nini takes gina's shoes- which was an act of vengeance in the loosest sense of that word, but i really don't think nini's singular act of rebellion is enough to class them as rivals. also nini immediately apologizes for thinking gina stole her phone and returns the stuff kourtney stole (and in fairness to nini, gina did in fact steal her phone, so... y'know). someone who could've been actually a rival to gina is lily, because she's actually the kind of person to fight for her ambitions, but they didn't go there.
ej and ricky definitely come closer to being like- rivals bc they both act in opposition, and i mean the basketball scene is the best example of that. ej both does and doesn't see ricky as a threat, and vice versa, so it's complicated. ricky wasn't trying to be the lead in the play, he just meant to be in the play to spend time with nini. ej's desire to get ricky out of the play was a one sided issue. the only thing they actually come toe to toe on is nini. so it's hard to say, but this one is for sure closer to a rivals plot.
--
but for your actual stuff you're saying... you're right. neither ej or ricky were ever enemies (or rivals) to gina. ej and gina were like- the enemy of my enemy is my friend in season 1. (and lbr- their wonderstudies plot could've never worked out for both of them because if one of them succeeds in getting their rival out of the play, the other won't be because the point is to get ricky and nini uncomfortable with each other's presence. if one quits the other definitely won't.) it didn't even make sense for them to team up... but yeah for sure not enemies / rivals, they didn't have the same objective pitting them against each other, bc they weren't going for the same role, or trying to get the same thing in general really. reluctant allies, maybe frenemies, not enemies or rivals. ricky and gina on the other hand had a single conflict... which was way more about ej (and his home life, lbr) than about gina herself. that said- their whole dynamic started because gina was trying to manipulate him so that she could get nini to quit the show, so it's more complicated than just the one moment at homecoming. that said- ricky didn't ever find out about that, just like nini never found out about gina stealing her phone, so y'know. (i do find it interesting gina never faces consequences for her actions like ej does, but i was pleased to see his character facing consequences anyway bc disney typically brushes over this stuff).
--
i'm not usually necessarily one for an unexpected plot twist, because i'd rather see something that follows the existing narrative, even if it seems boring or cliche or whatever, but i get why people like them at the same time bc it spices things up.
i don't think gina's advice even about nini always works for ricky, particularly when taking 2.04 as an example, but that aside, i do think that's a trope explored a good bit in fiction, and a fun one when done well. like- usually works lightly inspired by the play cyrano de bergerac especially. the half of it on netflix comes to mind, but there are LOTS out there. if you like that trope definitely look into media inspired by cyrano.
--
i do think it could be really nice to see ej and ricky actually become friends, particularly with how close matt and josh are irl, but if they really do play into the love triangle this season (which imo isn't as much of a given as people expect), i don't know how close they're going to let them be. i'd be happy to just see one nice conversation between them at this point bc it doesn't seem like the show is willing to do much else. look at gina and nini- they don't even feel like they're really friends then BOOM. one good emotional conversation to close out the season.
i think if they were able to bring back jordan fisher, maybe they'll have some scene where nini's with jamie and she thanks gina over facetime or something for connecting them, or maybe even without jordan fisher? but who knows. i was thinking maybe the show would have gina get some moment of like- maybe in the background she and jamie are rebuilding their relationship even though we don't see him. but idk if i still expect that or not with the shorter timeline and less episodes? we shall see. idk if gina and nini will interact this season. they might and they might not. i think if she interacts with a main cast member it will likely be ricky or kourtney, or both. and it's probably going to be on facetime imo at this point.
--
at the end of the day, i agree with you when you say these ships aren't likely to happen, given there's been no attempt at a set up for either in our existing, but i don't think that should stop you from shipping them even if it's not realistic. aus are a thing for a reason haha. (i know i love writing aus even for canon ships.)
but also! i 1000% agree when you say you just want the characters to be happy and live up to their potential. it's all anyone could want for a character they care about! i do think there aren't a lot of ways to keep ej around to a large extent without somewhat doing a disservice to his character, but i truly do hope they do well by him moving forward, in whatever way that may be :) i just want the show to do well by these kids. it's what they deserve.
--
last thing- thanks for the asks anon, this was a lot of fun and i'm sorry it took so long to get back to you. it's just been busy / a rough time for me lowkey. i'd be happy to hear your ideas whenever <3

Bex for the ask thing
How I feel about this character: Oh boy do i have a lot to say, but i keep it short. and dont get me wrong i loved bex. But she sometimes fell underdeveloped during seasons. I loved Bex and Andi and Bex and Cece relationship. I also loved the way she had a whole business, but i feel like the few emotional arcs she had where swept under the rug. Like her ex arc..since it was such a big focus for the episode, i feel like they didn’t properly show or address....how her ex affected her.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: bowie i mean there wasn’t any other romantic interest and im glad because bexie perfection.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Britnney and Her had an amazing friendship that we where deprived of😤
My unpopular opinion about this character: She wasn’t a good mother responsibility speaking. Even though she did lay down the foot once in a while. It amazing the stuff Andi was allowed to get away with.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: bisexual bex enough said.

The scene between Buffy and Cyrus resonates so deeply with me. It was so natural and easy to digest while still holding all its initial power and depth. Little boys and girls will now have someone that they can look to and realize that they are not weird or bad. On top of that, Mack Chat proves that this topic is not something too big or adult for the target audience to handle. Joshua Rush did a fantastic job bringing this scene to us and I am so grateful Disney went through with it. I can't wait to see what Andi Mack does next.

I would just like to point out that the fact that the writers put that bit in during the Space Otters award scene where Jonah is about to announce the MVP and both Cyrus and Buffy say that it's going to be Andi, but it turns out to be Cyrus, is proof that something is going on. Why would they make a big deal about Cyrus and Buffy assuring Andi that it was going to be her?

Chocolates versus Granola Bar (Gina's 'Sweet Gesture'- Past, Present, and Future)
So I noticed my Chocolategate analysis caused a bit of contention in recent days among the tagged ships, particularly Portwells and Rinas. I should make it clear that when I tag your ships appropriately (by which I mean it’s not anti or hate, an analysis is fair game), please feel free to respond to the post or send me an ask (whatever makes you feel more comfortable) if you agree or disagree! I’m more than open to constructive criticism on anything I post, especially if I tag your ship. Don’t be afraid to engage! I promise I will always try to understand your perspective as well.  😄
That being said, I’ve been thinking about how the Ricky chocogate situation (2.03-2.04) is directly related to the granola bar scene between Portwell in 2.09. I finally learned how to add pics, so I can use visual evidence to back up my claims. Probably gonna be lengthy, so adding a read more. 😅
Additions to Chocolategate analysis:
To start, the theory on who may have gotten Gina the chocolates, whether it was EJ or Ricky, gained traction at different times over the summer. For Rinas, it was repopularized more recently, but started making the rounds back in July (iirc). The theories of EJ possibly being the one to deliver the choco for Gina’s mom showed up back in May.
Tumblr media
Like I said in my original analysis, it really doesn't matter whether or not either boy got her the chocolates because they are ultimately and canonically from her mother. The sweet Valentine's Day gesture Gina was waiting for all day came from Terri because she didn't forget. Work hours for FEMA are long, sometimes 7am to 7pm, so it’s possible Terri remembered their tradition after work, later that night. Maybe Ricky or EJ helped to make that happen. If it was the latter, we can add that on to a long list of sweet gestures EJ has already done for Gina. If it was the former, that doesn't help Rina's interactions in 2.04 because it would mean Ricky contributed to Gina's insecurities (misreading the signs) by not admitting to helping her mom out. He sarcastically states "I go big Gina. You know that" in 2.04, which would only make his behavior towards her throughout S2 worse if he really did get her the chocolates but never admitted to it. Regardless, chocogate isn't about some boy. It's been used to strengthen Gina's bond with female characters (her mom in 2.03, Ashlyn in 2.10, and Nini in 2.10/2.12). Terri didn't forget their tradition, Ash has become Gina's number one confidant, and Nini wants to continue to build their trust/friendship. Now, on to Gina's past, present, and future with sweet gestures (in relation to food).
Ricky, Chocolates, and the Past:
In her convo with Ricky at his apartment in 2.03, Gina admits "Every girl likes a sweet gesture. I speak from experience" which I have no doubt is in reference to Ricky playing WTWMAY to Gina in 1.06 (which was initiated by Gina). Ricky playing her a song on his guitar was a sweet gesture to Gina which she thought was only their moment to share, until Ricky serenaded Nini in front of all the Wildcats in 2.01 (unprompted, might I add). He responds to her statement with "I think you'll get yours too" which Gina misinterprets to mean that Ricky will give her a sweet gesture soon. Unfortunately, after sending her crush an "embarrassing text" (2.04), it turns out that her mom sent her a Valentine after all.
Unbeknownst to Gina at the time, Ricky's statement does end up coming true, just not in the way she thought it would. He foreshadows Gina "getting her [sweet gestures] too" from EJ throughout S2! 😄 She just had to be a little more patient and raise/set her standards over time (starting in 2.05). However, considering her past experience with 'sweet gestures' in regards to Ricky (and how wrong/embarrassed she felt) Gina doesn't want to risk getting hurt again and misread the signs, so it takes her a long time to realize EJ is romantically interested in her. I mean, just look at the way Gina talks about Valentine's Day in 2.04's recap. She resents the holiday by proclaiming "Valentine's Day is a made-up holiday that I choose not to recognize." The audience obviously knows this to be false, especially considering how hopeful and happy she was in 2.03, thinking she received a Valentine from her crush. Thankfully, a surprise present day run-in with Jack at the airport in 2.09 helps Gina realize her own feelings for EJ (by letting go of the past) and that what she's looking for is already presenting itself.
Jack, the VIP Lounge, and the Present:
I didn't know I needed a mini Andi Mack reunion until I saw Sofia and Asher together onscreen again (Buffy and Jonah are all grown up! 😭) I absolutely loved what Jack's character brought to Gina's character arc by 2.09. In their first sit-down convo in the episode, Gina asks Jack a few personal questions in an attempt to get to know him ("So is Miami home?") while she searches her bag for a granola bar. Jack decides to come up with a solution to her problem ("...[I] got a backup plan") by throwing her into a (hilarious!) improv scenario. 😂 Using the skills she learned from Miss Jenn's improv weekend (2.06) and the ones she picked up from Jack (about crying in front of the gate agent), Jack and Gina are able to gain access to the VIP Lounge. Here, the audience gets real insight into Gina's life through her honest conversation with Jack:
Gina: I actually have a much older brother. Though I might as well be an only child.
Jack: He's not around?
Gina: He basically ghosted us when I was a kid. I guess you could say he's a free spirit. (sarcastically) Maybe you two know each other.
Jack: (hurt) Below the belt.
Gina: I'm sorry. I usually don't open up to people. I'm a little rusty.
Jack: You can practice on me.
Gina: Haven't had a lot of luck with that. The no-strings confession. (This is in reference to the Rina 2.06 flashback confession on HSM opening night)
Jack: Ah. You're a fellow member of the Heartbreak Club.
Gina: Oh, I think I'm the president.
Jack: Do you know the trick? Care less.
Gina: Smart. I should try that.
Not only do we learn about Gina's estranged relationship with her absentee older brother, Jamie, we can see she's still hurt and is continuing to process the pain from her heartbreak over Ricky (in healthier ways than before) by acknowledging it and talking about it. Jack being a complete stranger, one she is likely to never see again, gives Gina the confidence to have a real "no-strings confession" later on in the episode when she admits to him "It's cute. You're cute." Jack makes it no secret that he's romantically interested in Gina, which she is aware of. But they both know their time together at the airport is coming to an end. In an effort to make him feel better, Gina says "We'll always have the VIP Lounge" where, through the skills Jack taught her, she was able to enjoy plenty of snacks to satiate her hunger. Unlike with Ricky and the chocolates mishap, Gina doesn't have to question Jack's intention on helping her find something to eat because she's aware of the fact that he likes her. However, instead of meeting her needs himself, Jack shows Gina how to get what she wants. Before leaving, Jack hands Gina a paper airplane by imitating a plane crash (which is symbolic of Gina letting go of her past with Ricky). What else does Gina compare to a plane crash (twice)? Her HSM opening night confession to Ricky in 2.06 ("You know how when the plane is going down, people confess things because they know they'll never have to see you again?" AND "Yeah, the plane was going down.") Though she had a nice time spending the day with Jack, there's only one boy in Salt Lake City who meets Gina's wants and needs in a potential romantic partner. Enter Gina's future boyfriend, EJ Caswell, granola bar in hand.
EJ, the Granola Bar, and the Future:
I remember when 2.09 had first aired and EJ showed up with the aforementioned granola bar, the fandom lost it (some good, some bad) and tried to discredit his sweet gesture. Instead of focusing on the thought behind it, the fandom tried to minimize EJ's sweet gesture for Gina by comparing the monetary value of the granola bar to Jack's gesture in the VIP Lounge and Ricky's sarcastic/joking statement in 2.04. Some screenshots to prove my point:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ricky's "I go big Gina, you know that” is in direct response to Gina (half-jokingly) saying she found “part of a Twix bar near my locker. I can only assume it’s your latest Valentine to me.” Ricky and Gina are trying to joke with each other about the chocolates in 2.04 in an effort to preserve their friendship but it only ends up hurting Gina more (b/c it’s too soon to joke about at this point in S2). The saddest part about Ricky’s statement to Gina in 2.04 is the fact that she does know he goes big/sweet with his gestures when he’s interested in a girl (esp Nini). Some examples include 1.01 (audition for HSM), 1.10 (quitting the show for Ninis chance at YAC/Breaking Free duet), 2.01 (serenading her in Ashlyn’s living room), 2.03 (wrote a song for her for Val. Day), 2.04 (drives thru snowstorm to see her at train/bus station), most of which Ricky initiates himself, and all of which Gina is aware of/eye-witness to. EJs small, sweet gesture of the granola bar is wrapped up in the big, grand gesture of driving to the airport in the middle of the night (during his Spring Break) to pick Gina up after a long day. Ricky’s hope Gina “will get [her sweet gesture] too” in 2.03 comes true multiple times throughout S2b thanks to EJ (paraphrasing) (2.05- “That was amazing...You’re glowing”, 2.07- “I felt bad you’re stuck on lookout alone”, 2.10- They talk over the break). In all these instances, Gina herself calls either EJ or something he did for her “sweet.” In an attempt to lighten Gina’s mood on Valentine’s Day during their convo in his living room (2.03), Ricky tries (unsuccessfully) to cheer her up by giving her hope someday, someone will give her her sweet gesture too (it just won’t be him). I’m not saying it won’t ever be Ricky, but given his track record and the canon facts, he simply doesn’t “go big” for Gina. But he does want her to be happy too, so he gives her hope that someone else will give her the sweet gestures “every girl loves” (2.03).
When making a Movie/TV Show, every little detail is handpicked by the crew to contribute to the story. Nothing is a coincidence or left up to chance, including the background music used in a scene. The show uses the exact same score (music) in the Rina 2.03 convo as the Portwell airport scene in 2.09. Ricky foreshadowing Gina getting her sweet gesture comes true in the form of another food item, this time a granola bar instead of chocolates.

While it’s a mystery to Gina on who delivered the chocolates in 2.03, EJ hands her something that she was specifically craving all day while stuck at the airport. The granola bar not only shows initiative, it shows the fact EJ pays attention to Gina, cares for her, and was able to anticipate her wants/needs without her having to ask. The way that Ricky shows his care for Nini (through grand/sweet gestures) is the way that EJ shows his care for Gina (also grand/sweet gestures). What Gina has observed between Ricky and Nini (as a former/current couple) is exactly how EJ treats her (even prior to dating). Four episodes after EJ has his moment of realization, Gina finally realizes her own feelings for EJ by the end of 2.09. It’s not until both EJ and Gina are on the same page (with a little help from their friends, including Ricky and Nini) that the narrative rewards them for their patience and courage by 2.10 with their risotto date (I swear these food parallels are killing me 😩). While her past heartbreak (Ricky) almost held Gina back in 2.10, the possibility of a future relationship with EJ, via an official risotto date, gives her the confidence to “put [herself] out there [again] and get [everything!] back” this time (2.05).
Last Note: I used to be a hardcore Rina stan so don’t think I’ll just shut you down if you disagree. I’m open to different interpretations (with evidence to support your claims) if you wanna discuss! 😛 If you got this far, thanks for reading! ❤ lol 😂
