Cyrus Coming Out (1st Time) - s2 ep1 "Hey, Who Wants Pizza?"

Don't know what it is about this scene, but even though it's been years since it first aired, I still get chills when I watch it. Something about the emotion and the support that comes from Buffy, just gets to me. Not to mention it was SUPER unexpected at the time, especially since this is Disney we're talking about.

I absolutely love Cyrus' arc from here out, despite it being mainly in the background. From his unrequited feeling's for Jonah, to his requited feelings for TJ, and ESPECIALLY to his closeness and bond with Buffy who supported him through everything (plus Andi to a lesser degree, but still prominent!). Cyrus is one of the best queer Disney characters represented on Disney Channel itself, in comparison to their countless queer shows/characters on Disney+.

And the fact that they didn't over or under do it, was a nice touch to it all (even though I personally don't mind "in your face" queer characters).

I just really wish more people watched this show, and would talk about Cyrus as a character more often. I feel like I really only see people not knowing the show, or calling it cringe these days. I like our small community, but it still bums me out sometimes.

Every day it still baffles me that Cyrus Goodman uttered the words “I’m Gay” on Disney Channel. Like if I saw/heard that a decade before!?! It would’ve been a game changer. I’m so glad that it was apart of kids’ childhood today. Also happy Pride month y’all.

To the anon who said this, I’d say you’re right… up to a point. Gay storytelling IS less uncommon, but look at the main contexts it typically shows up:

A. explicitly gay movies like call me by your name/moonlight/crush/love, simon

B) explicitly gay tv shows like heartstopper/young royals/love victor

C) Side characters in non-gay movies, very rarely the main characters or else it becomes a gay movie: lady bird/mean girls/the perks of being a wallflower/american fiction/nope… sometimes these characters don’t even get to kiss anyone or date anyone

D) Side characters in tv shows, very rarely the main characters or else it becomes a gay show: riverdale, bridgerton, locke & key, hsmtmts 

E) if there are queer main characters in a non-gay show, they’re usually established in season 1 so people know what to expect (for example, euphoria or chucky or yellowjackets or xo, kitty… which still got a lot of backlash for “suddenly” making kitty bi).

F) Characters in very progressive animated films like Nimona or shows, often ones that get cancelled too, like The Owl House 

G) Literally Background characters in mainstream franchises like Marvel and Star Wars… Marvel has had ONE gay kiss on screen and that’s the guy from eternals… it’s had some other queer characters like valkyrie but they never get to do anything gay

H) Modern Disney Channel shows like Andi Mack where Cyrus Goodman became their first gay character… in 2019

There really isn’t anything like Stranger Things: a mainstream, non-gay, coming-of-age, sci-fi/horror show with no explicit, undeniable gay storylines suddenly- from the perspective of the GA- making one of its main characters, who has been in a fairly popular relationship with a girl since season 1, gay. And then going from 0 gay kisses to presumably multiple (including Robin and Vickie), where homosexuality is at the front and center inherently because of Will’s main character arc and Mike’s head. This IS very new. We are not only saying this is happening, but that this has been the plan since the beginning because of secret clues planted in the show.

So that’s where the doubt comes from, I think. Especially when America and the world is getting more homophobic too, not less. Conservatives call us groomers. People still see homosexuality as a sin. SO many of the audience members see Mike as the straightest character of all time and are screaming Mike is not, has never been, and never will be gay or bi.

Byler’s so juicy and it’s so bold, it’s undeniably a straightbait, and it will blindside a lot of the audience who never saw any of the queer subtext in the show and assumed the most they would see is maybe Robin holding hands with a girl or Will having an unnamed bf at the end.

Even just look at the reaction to Noah when he came out from many so-called Stranger Things fans. The show has absolutely attracted a conservative audience. Was that the intention? No, but it’s what happened. Non-homophobic audience members will be chill, but everyone else? It will be a wild time. Do the Duffers really want to make Stranger Things culture war public enemy number one? Time will tell.

All the evidence is in place. The only question. is, will the Duffers REALLY pull the trigger?

That requires a lot of faith.

even if disney was saying whoever that openly gay teenager is was their first openly gay animated teenage character is luz from toh not out and also a teenager...

Yeah no Luz is canonically bi and we saw her come out to her mother, and at age 14-15 she is definitely a teenager. Apparently the article went on to say that the character from Strange World is actually Disney's first openly gay teenage character in a movie. Which like okay. Technically true. But like. We are getting to the point where I can't even imagine how many more uber-specific First Gay Characters they can come up with before running out of ideas. Cyrus Goodman was the true first, and considering how hard Terri and the crew fought for that to happen it feels so disrespectful to erase that.

The kicker is Strange World actually seems like it's going to be a really cool movie with some actually good representation, and Disney is hardly doing anything to promote (aside from this stupid "First Gay Teenager" article apparently--which like, maybe will deter more people from watching it than it will attract?). I feel like Disney is purposely setting this movie up to fail so they can claim that audiences don't care about movies with diverse characters nor about non-musical non-mcu movies and won't have to make more like it. It sucks.

002: Trobed

when i started shipping them: early 2921 when i started community

my thoughts: they were so queercoded and from a story telling perspective a lot the plot lines can really only make sense if they were romantically inclined but dan harmon was a coward and they liked benefiting from trobed shippers without wanting to make them canon. but they are in my heart.

what makes me happy about them: they are so utterly in love but like they care so deeply for each other. they made each other feel safe and seen in a way they never expected or thought possible

what makes me sad about them: the mutual pining with no closure and how they both found their person and specifically with abed, troy chose to leave him. and abed was hurt but more importantly mad at himself for being hurt because he should’ve seen it coming because that’s what people do, come into his life and make him care about them and then leave.

things done in fanfics that annoy me: i haven’t really seen anything, i guess i’m mostly bothered when the voices of the characters are wrong or when they’re written out of character?

things i look for in fanfics: angst 🫶 but also shenanigans and closure

my wishlist: idek i just want them to be canon community movie don’t let me down 😭

my happily ever after for them: abed is a successful director and troy is a billionaire but he finds odd jobs both for plumbing and ax repairs just cause it’s fun and easy and he doesn’t charge much bc he doesn’t need the money. they live this nice ass house bc they’re nerds and would love something big and dumb and fancy (but at the end of the day all that letters is they’re together). troy is a dog person and abed is a cat person and they fight ab which one they should get until they both come home with their desired pets and simply accept this life. i don’t know if i see them having kids but i’m not specifically against it

There’s that scene after Cyrus reveals that he told his mom about Bex being Andi’s mom, and while the girls are mad at him, he says, “Look, it was hard enough for you to tell us. And you shouldn't have to go through that over and over again.”

a couple words on joshua rush

i know i’m late to the party (im sick and was sleeping) but Josh coming out today really threw me around for a second. 

I was actually genuinely surprised, in all honestly, I didn’t expect this at all. I think in some ways it explains some of his abrasive behaviour and it does make me think of him differently. I’ve never disliked Josh, I’ve just thought he was a little too involved in this fandom for his own good, and his desire to be messy was a little unsettling (and stirred up unnecessary drama). That being said, it is now mostly explained for, with him latching onto this amazing group of support for his character and thus he wanted to support Cyrus inso, supporting himself indirectly. 

It’s sweet, it’s bittersweet, because it hurts a little. I can’t begin to imagine what Josh was going through. He only came out to his cast members last night. He was actively posting and commenting about being straight, knowing he wasn’t. That really has to take a toll, it has to hurt. Being in the closet is hard, but it has to be so much harder when you play a character who isn’t. A character who is so loved by his friends and has accepted himself so fully that he’s able to be with the guy he likes. 

And you think it would be some sort of support, and I’m sure in the end it was (that and all of you being there), but at the same time Josh is an actor, a public figure, who is put under a spotlight every day. I didn’t realise until today just what that means in terms of coming out. You aren’t just telling your family at dinner, you aren’t just making a post on your instagram and slowly coming out to others in your life. Other people are FIGHTING to do it for you. You come out and there are 50 articles in the works, just on your sexuality.  Not even doing it for any kind of MEANING but just to get clicks, to get likes, to use your sexuality as gossip. And then there’s interviews, interviews in 2 years that are supposed to be about an upcoming movie, and are instead focused on your sexuality. You’re trending on twitter, getting thousands of replies and comments on who you are as a person, by the most random people. And while in 2019, a good chunk of that focus is good focus, it’s still all-consuming. It’s still. so. much.

Josh was able to play a character who could come out to his friends, who had a private life where he could have a private boyfriend, and have that to himself. And as he read those scripts, as he played that life, he was figuring out who he was, and that he couldn’t have that. And thats NOT to say that it’s bad, but it’s SO much harder. It’s something you have to 100% be in and ready for. And he wanted to come out, he wanted to be who he was in public, to all of us, and on top of all of that, it’s just so brave.

And I love that he’s out there posting memes, using his platform to support GLAAD and ask for donations, and engaging with the fans. He’s taking this in stride and it makes me really happy to see that he can be himself. It’s just crazy that he felt like he needed to hide a part of himself back. I’m so happy that he’s here with us now. 

Thanks, Josh, for being so brave, for putting a foot in the door and then kicking it open. You’re so appreciated, and we’ll support you as much as, if not more than, we supported Cyrus. You’re taking this in stride, and it’s amazing to see.
