“Gina giving the speech was unrealistic.” “Ricky still doesn’t love Gina as much as she loves him.”

Walk with me.

Gina SAYING how she feels explicitly after all they’ve been through (Gina moving then coming back, Rini getting back together, her ‘confession’ in season 1, Ricky being blinded by his fear of change to see how he’s UNINTENTIONALLY hurting Gina, Rina drifting apart after 2x05, Portwell getting together and Rina’s reconciliation in S3) proves that she gets him. Ricky has always needed people to use words to show how they feel about him because HE never has the words. His love language is words of affirmation and a bit of quality time, he prefers to receive love in those ways and he gives his in quality time and acts of service.

He had to HEAR that after all they went through, Gina still loved him and she knew that. Because they get each other. Remember she’s the one who vocalized how he felt about his mother and Todd in season one episode seven: “just when you get used to things changing, they change again. Am I close?” “…maybe”

Gina not getting the big speech doesn’t mean Ricky’s feelings aren’t as strong, it means he understands her because Gina might have always heard pretty words (from her mother, her brother, EJ this summer) but no one has STOOD BY HER. No one has shown up and stayed for her until Ricky. EJ showed up when things were easy (before he graduated and had to face real life) but Ricky stayed throughout a pretty life changing time for both of them (her first summer camp, her first real friendships, her first basketball triumph, her first ‘big’ lead, his turning eighteen) he walked beside her through this and she knows it.

She knows Ricky loves her because while he barely showed up last season when they were both in turbulent times in their lives and had drifted apart, he’s now here, unmoving. She had to SEE him after all they went through and he knew she deserved someone by her side because remember in season one episode five: “I don’t do dates. Try moving five schools in seven years.” “And how’s that working out for you?”

She’s never had stability and he knows it. Gina’s love language is quality time and acts of service. And she gives her love with acts of service and words of affirmation. Ricky gave his all for this musical because it meant a lot to Gina, he helped her plan the surprise for Elton and he was by her side through the woman in the woods and colour war and defended her from Channing and even after Portwell’s break up, he was there and they were only apart after SHE left him in the coat check. Hell, HE went to find HER after she missed HIS birthday surprise.

She recognizes what he was saying all summer without using words and gave her love in the form of words of affirmation.

A trait they share is they NEED physical touch. Ricky and Gina relish in feeling the other person. They (playfully) hold hands, Ricky places her hand over his heart, they hug, they lean into one another when they stand next to each other as if to remind themselves and the other person that they are there.

The kiss was perfectly placed because all that needed to be said or shown over the summer had been. Gina placed all her cards on the table at the theater and Ricky had shown his all summer. They kissed to show the other that what they always had was always real.

Gina deserves the big romantic moments and she will absolutely get them from Ricky but not only in words, but in gestures. In time together. In showing up and staying.

TL: DR: Rina works because they understand who the other is NOW. Gina SAYING how she feels is on parr with Ricky SHOWING how he feels.

The thing that keeps getting to me with this season of hsmtmts is the needlessly cruel and hurtful way it’s treating portwell’s storyline and development so far.

I know Tim feels like giving in to the r*n* hive on twitter will give him more buzz, and thus far, more seasons of the show, but after setting up EJ and Gina’s development, as a couple and as characters, so well last season, there was no need to treat it this poorly now. If the intention was to make Ricky and Gina get together, there was a thousand other ways to do it and keep it respectful and considerate to these characters and their story.

But just deciding to abandon EJ’s growth to justify another couple? Doing a repeat of the season 1 plot with the same ending but Gina in the middle? Implying EJ is the “bad guy” again and because of that deserves to be miserable? Making him stand in a stupid costume in front of his girlfriend and the guy that has once actively pursued his ex-girlfriend while having to watch them flirt? That’s what it’s looking like so far and it’s just nonsense.

Did the writers forget that there’s also a lot of people who ship portwell and a big part of the general audience (who’s just watching the show without keeping up with it in the internet) that loves them?

But I’ll tell you this, fanservice might get buzz for a while, but poor and repetitive storytelling and shitty character developments only gets you so far. It might keep a part of the twitter fandom loyal, but eventually it starts to make the wider audience lose interest.

and you can be pissed about EJ’s daddy issues and how unloved he is by his father but saying Ricky ‘always gets what he wants’ as though his mama didn’t abandon him, his daddy isn’t using money they barely have to take Miss Jenn on cruises, like his teachers telling him he has no profitable skills or prospects, like Miss Jenn telling him to jump off of something high isn’t CRAZY is nuts to me! but yeah, he’s ‘always winning’ because two girls that have always liked him still liked him and he got a couple of leads in musicals. As Gina says EJ has been "acting like an old version of himself" or maybe this is the "real EJ," EJ's reaction really stood out to me. He doesn't act offended or that he can't believe she just said that, his reaction is one of deep pain and sorrow, complete with nearly being in tears. He seems ashamed. He's clearly holding back tears and trying not to break down at this point. Gina's opinion of him really matters to EJ, so for her to compare his past and present self cuts deep. Don't get me wrong, she has every right to feel hurt and react to that hurt! I'm more so talking about EJ's reaction and follow-up to these specific lines. The very next thing we see him do is have a phone call with someone, asking if they could make it there sooner. I'm fairly certain he called up Miss Jenn. Evidence:

Given the fact that there's blue and yellow in the background, pretty sure Miss Jenn is the surprise guest during 3.06 ("Color Wars"). Also, I know for a fact that is EJ's shoulder in the second screenshot LOL he's the only one tall enough for that angle. I don't know for sure the reasons he may have called Miss Jenn, but I theorize that it's for reinforcements. Gina just called him out on his current behavior, and he wants to take the steps to correct that. The very fact that he's calling Miss Jenn shows improvement and a step in the right direction because he's actively asking for help. He's realizing he can't do this alone and he needs someone with experience to help him on this journey as director. I think the Portwell angst in 3.05, specifically the scene I gifed, takes it back to the 2.08 couch convo. The way Gina saw him then surprised EJ because he was still ashamed of his past actions-

Gina: I see someone who tries really hard to do the right thing. And fails a lot. But he keeps on trying.

EJ: That's what you think of me? (2.08)

I get the feeling EJ may have been thinking back on the above conversation he had with Gina during their 3.05 fight. He hates that Gina's perception of him has changed, and he desperately wants to make things right. Hence why he calls in reinforcements via Miss Jenn, a director they're familiar with and who has plenty of experience. I have no doubt in my mind that EJ will do his damn best to do right by Gina and the rest of the Wildcats. I'm also expecting a breakdown and breakthrough for him at some point. He's definitely on the verge of one.
