you made your way into the bar, as it was your first weekend living in jersey. you walk in and head straight to the counter, asking for a drink that was sweet and didn’t taste too strongly of alcohol.
“hey stranger.” a voice says to your right and you turn your head.
“dawson?” you say, your eyes widening.
“hey y/n.” he says opening his arms for you to hug him, which you gladly accept.
“how have you been? oh my gosh it’s been what like 3 years.” you say smiling at your old school friend.
“i’ve been good, playing hockey here is fucking awesome.” he says.
“yes! that’s right you play for the devils, how could i forget you getting drafted!” the two of you laugh.
“well how’s your boyfriend? haven’t seen him in a few years either.” he asks curiously.
“funny you should ask, i broke up with him and that’s why i moved here.”
“wait really? why? you don’t have to explain if you’re not comfortable.” the brunette boy asks leaning on the counter.
“well things were so great when we started dating our senior year but within the last year he became a real fucking asshole, so i broke it off and moved away so he couldn’t try to find me and sucker me into being with him again.” you explain, leaving out any details you weren’t ready to share.
“well shit, i’m sorry y/n. i bet that hurt a lot.”
“it did but i’m over it, ready to find someone else.” you say and you practically see the light bulb turn on over his head.
“i think i have someone i want you to meet.” he smirks. you grab your drink and follow close behind him, holding onto his arm.
“hey jack!” dawson says to a brunette boy with bright blue eyes.
“what’s up daws, who’s this?” he says looking at you. you release dawson’s arm and give him a smile.
“jack this is y/n, y/n this is jack.” he says looking between you two.
“nice to meet you, jack.” you say.
“yeah, you too.” he smiles, causing a blush to burn in your cheeks.
“i have to go to the bathroom, you two have fun. don’t get too drunk.” he says giggling and walking off to the bathroom.
“so y/n, what brings you to jersey?” he asks.
“just needed a change of scenery from my hometown. dawson and i went to highschool together.” you tell him.
“oh wow, small world. are you still new to living here or?”
“yeah this is only my first weekend but i’m glad im already meeting people, it was getting pretty lonely.” you laugh.
“well now that you’ve reconnected with dawson, you have a whole new group of people to hang out with.”
“oh are you guys like on the same team?” you ask.
“yeah we are, my brothers around here somewhere. probably tongue deep in some random girl.” he laughs.
“is he older or younger?”
“younger.” he says taking a sip of his drink.
“oh nice.” you smile doing the same.
“can i get your number?” he asks.
“yeah of course.” you say as he hands you his phone.
“what have i missed?” a tall, curly haired boy asks.
“ah yes, y/n, this is my brother luke.”
“nice to meet you.” you say.
“nice to meet you too.” he replies.
“so where were you?” jack asks as i hand him his phone back.
“i was talking to john but i didn’t wanna ruin his game so i came back.” he laughs.
“johnny getting some ladies?”
“he sure was.” luke laughs, taking a sip of his beer.
“i see you’ve met the other one.” dawson says returning from the bathroom.
“yes i have.” i laugh at him. you spent the next 2 hours with the boys, enjoying their presence and the fact that you’d made some friends in your new town.
“well i think im gonna call it a night.” you say taking the final sip of your drink.
“let me walk you?” jack asks.
“yeah sure.” you accept and the two of you make your way out of the bar.
“did you walk here or drive?” he asks stopping once you made it outside.
“oh i walked, i live like two blocks away.”
“okay cool, show me the way.” he says.
“jack you don’t have to.”
“i’m not letting you walk back to your apartment by yourself at midnight in a big city y/n.” he says firmly.
“oh, thank you.” you blush and begin your walk to your apartment. the walk was filled with small talk and laughter, the chemistry between you two growing more and more with seemingly every step.
“well this is my place.” you say arriving at your door.
“alright, have a good night y/n. i’ll text you.” he says as you pull him in for a side hug.
“goodnight jack.” you say shutting the door behind you. it’s been 5 days and you already have a crush on someone you just met. it felt almost wrong. you had broken up with your boyfriend just two weeks ago. you couldn’t allow yourself to move on too quickly. your phone buzzed in your back pocket and you see that dawson had texted you.
dawson: glad you made it back safe!
y/n: thank you! except really you can thank jack
dawson: hahaha well i guess so🙄 have a good night y/n
y/n: you too, see you again soon?
dawson: yes for sure, season starts in like a month and a half i’m sure you’ll get sick of seeing me
y/n: doubt it
dawson: only bc ill bring jack
y/n: bitch
dawson: i’m messing with you lmaooooo goodnight y/n
y/n: goodnight daws😭
-
you woke up the next morning to a text from jack saying good morning, to which you replied with a simple, good morning. texting a new guy felt so wrong. you didn’t know what to do about it but you couldn’t ghost him so you figure you should just keep chatting and see what happens.
“lunch?” you say reading his next text. the boy asked you to lunch, to which you hesitantly agreed to join him. you made yourself a small breakfast to tide you until lunch. you sat on the couch watching tv, growing more nervous by the second. he didn’t ask you on a date, just lunch. maybe he just wants to be friends? after you ate, you put on a casual outfit and added a natural touch to your makeup. he texted the address and you left your apartment, hoping to arrive after him. once you arrive at the, what appears to be, small coffee shop, you’re greeted by jack smiling at the counter.
“sorry i’m a little late.” you laugh nervously.
“no don’t worry, i was just about to order. what do you want?”
“oh jack you don’t have to pay i can’t wait in line.” you say.
“now what kind of man would i be to let a pretty girl like you wait in line and pay for her own food?” he says boldly, a blush creeping up on your cheeks.
“an iced vanilla latte and a buttered croissant is good then.” you simply reply, finding a seat at a table by a large window. he meets you soon after, with a table number in his hand.
“you ever been here before?” he asks, noticing you staring out the window.
“i haven’t, i didn’t even know it was here until you told me about it.” you say redirecting your attention to the boy who already had his eyes on you.
“i come here sometimes, it’s like my special little spot for special occasions.” he smiles leaning back in his chair.
“what’s so special about this occasion?” you question, wanting real answers.
“it’s our first date.” he smirks causing your face to burn bright red.
“well i guess it is isn’t it.” you laugh.
-
once you arrive back at your apartment, you throw your purse to the side and kick off your shoes.
“what have i done? what do i do? oh fuck me, i can’t do this.” you say, that piece of your heart never healing from your past relationship. you couldn’t let go of the mistrust you felt. you never wanted to make the same mistake again, so you called dawson.
“hello?” you speak when he picks up.
“hey y/n, what’s up?”
“can you come over, i need advice.”
“yeah of course, send me your address and i’ll be there.”
“thank you so much, bye daws.” you say hanging up and sending him your address. you sat on your couch almost in a panic. you told yourself over and over to not do this again, especially this soon. a short 10 minutes later, you hear a knock on your door and you open it to see dawson standing there in his sweats.
“did i wake you from a nap?” you laugh.
“yes actually you did, but it’s okay, what’s up?” he says stepping in and shutting the door behind him.
“jack is what’s up.”
“oh?” he says plopping down on my couch.
“so we went out to lunch, he called it our first date.” you say.
“okay what’s the problem with that?” he says.
“you’re not understanding, my ex and i broke up what 3 weeks ago? i can’t move on, how do i know i can trust him?”
“y/n, jacks a nice guy, i wouldn’t have introduced you two if i thought otherwise.”
“i just think it’s too soon dawson.”
“relax, calm down, chill out.” he says standing up and placing his hands on your biceps.
“how am i supposed to be calm?”
“y/n, no one is rushing you into a relationship. you are not committed to the guy, you went on ONE date. you aren’t married to him, just relax. i know it’s hard, i don’t know all the details of your break up but obviously you let your mistrust cloud your vision of good people. i wouldn’t let you go down a dark rabbit hole, and you know that.” he says calming your nerves. dawson always had a way of getting to you and calming you down when necessary, even though it had been years since you last saw the boy.
“okay you’re right.” you say sighing.
“and you don’t have to worry, he’s leaving to go to michigan for a couple days tomorrow, so you can spend time away from him and just texting, so you can get to know him better without it being to serious for you.” he adds.
“perfect.” you laugh.
“now why don’t we chill out and watch a movie, you’re clearly stressed and i want you to clear your mind.” he states, grabbing the remote and switching on the tv. after a couple hours, dawson heads home, leaving you alone with nothing but your phone.
jack: hey i’m headed to michigan tmrw morning, hang when im back?
y/n: yes for sure!
jack: ok awesome, see you then
y/n: *loved a message*
you sat with your thoughts. you were terrified of the possibilities with jack, you couldn’t help it. it’s like your brain had been hardwired to push him away, but you fought the urge harder than anyone could ever know.
-
it had been about two weeks and jack returned from his trip a few days ago. the two of you have been texting nonstop. you learned the silly facts about each other and his personality shined through even on text. he was beginning to give you that glimpse of hope that you thought you’d lost for good.
“i just don’t know.” you spoke to dawson through the phone.
“he’s never texted a girl this long, he obviously likes you.”
“well you never know.”
“he has had women throw themselves at him and he’s rejected all of them. don’t you see it.”
“i do but i just don’t know if it’s the best idea.”
“y/n, just give it another go. go on another date with him. you won’t regret it, you and i both know that as much as you don’t want to admit that your crush is more than just a silly little crush.”
“god, daws you always know how to pick my brain what is wrong with you?” you laugh.
“um nothing, im just correct.” he scoffs.
“okay whatever, ill call him tonight okay?” you reply hoping it’ll shut him up.
“i’m holding you to it, so you better.”
“whatever mercer.”
-
“hello?” you hear a muffled jack on the other end of the line.
“hey jack, i was wondering if maybe you’d wanna go out again some time? i had a great time with you.”
“yeah absolutely!”
“does tomorrow work?” you ask, holding your breath.
“yeah i don’t have any plans. ill come pick you up at 1?”
“perfect.” you smile to yourself.
“i’ll see you tomorrow y/n.”
“bye jack.” you say hanging up the phone, wanting to scream with excitement. you had no clue how this could feel the way it does so soon after your breakup.
-
2 months later
“hey,” jack says shaking you awake.
“huh.” you groan opening your eyes.
“i have a skate to go to, ill be back okay?” he says, you fully processing your surroundings.
“oh, yeah okay. have fun.” you smile as he leans down to kiss you on the cheek. you’d stayed the night at his house just like you have for a few nights every week since your second date though you never established a label for your relationship, just placing the boyfriend name tag on him when you’re out by yourself, too afraid to use it around him. the idea of him leaving you to skate sucked, and you shoved down these feelings so they wouldn’t get in the way of anything. you never wanted him to leave your sight. you hated that you’d grown so attached. you pulled out your phone to call dawson, always filling him in with updates.
“hey miss hughes, what you up to?” he asks picking up.
“dawson stop,” you laugh, “i just woke up, jack just left for optional skate.”
“oh that’s funny i’m on my way there now.”
“i’m sure he’ll ive you all the details.”
“yeah he always does but you’re gonna tell me what’s going on in that little brain of yours first.”
“i hate when he leaves dude. i hate it. i feel like i have no right to be this attached. being around him makes me so fucking happy, it’s like all my problems disappear when he’s around. but i need to face it, he probably doesn’t even want me.”
“you’re lying but go on.”
“lying about what?”
“you really think he ever keeps girls around this long if he doesn’t wanna be with them? be for real with yourself y/n.” he says plainly.
“okay well, point is, i’ve grown attached and i don’t understand my feelings daws.”
“i think you love him.” he laughs.
“you’re crazy.” you scoff.
“did you listen to anything you just said?”
“what part?”
“god damnit, think before you speak y/n. the way you feel when you’re around him is love. practically in its exact definition.”
“it’s only been 3 months that i’ve known the guy.”
“bitch do you really think love has a timeline?”
“well n-“
“THEN GO GET HIM.”
“i’m not gonna go, he’s skating.”
“i meant it figuratively, just wait for him to come back and see how different you feel compared to talking to me on the phone. don’t leave. don’t panic and push him away y/n. give him a shot.”
“okay okay, ill talk to you later dawson.”
“alright, bye y/n.” he says hanging up abruptly. you knew deep down that he was probably right and you couldn’t admit it to yourself. you sat on his couch for a few hours, waiting to hear the lock turn again, when suddenly it did.
“oh hey, you’re still here? i thought you’d be gone by now.” he laughs, hanging his keys on the hook.
“no i wanted to stay, your couch is cozy.”
“well i’m glad you’re still here.” he says, kissing you on top of the head as he passed behind the couch. dawson was right, you felt giddy when jack entered the room, and the feeling didn’t settle. he returns back to the living room.
“you look like you’re thinking.” he says sitting down next to you. you sit up and turn to him.
“i am thinking.” you say, anxiety running through your body at full speed, knee bouncing.
“what’s on that pretty mind of yours?” he giggles placing a hand on your leg gently.
“i think i love you.” you say quietly, the words slipping off your tongue with struggle. you finally let yourself trip and fall. it felt almost freeing. his demeanor shifts as a smile grows on his face. he sits up to get closer to you.
“what was that?” he asks, smile growing wider.
“i think i love you. no no, i do. i do love you. i love you jack. i know we never attached a label to whatever we are but i can’t keep pushing my feelings away anymore. i just love you.” you say finally being able to lock eyes with him. he connects your lips in response, framing your cheek with his callused hand. when you pull away his gorgeous smile returns.
“fuck, i love you too y/n.” he laughs, a wave of relief washing over you. you couldn’t believe how jack changed your perspective on love and men so quickly but it never felt more true to you. you couldn’t deny your feelings anymore no matter how hard you tried. you finally let yourself fall, and thank god it was into the right hands this time.

Pt 2 , Pt 3
Tumblr media
I slam my boyfriends shitty car door, stepping out into the cold November rain, running towards the brick house, an 8th of weed shoved in my bra. I can’t believe my idiot boyfriend is too lazy to get out of his car to make his delivery. I’ve never even met this customer and his dumbass is having me waltz right up this random man’s house, while he’s parked a block away.
I pound on the wooden door before stepping back a bit. I shift back and forth on my feet as I rub my hands up and down on my arms trying to warm myself with the friction. After a couple of minutes, the door swings open, a man with unkempt brown hair and tired eyes steps out, looking a bit surprised. Those eyes. I know them. I cant put my finger on it, but I know him from somewhere.
“Uhm can I help you? Are you alright?” he asks, stepping out onto the porch closing the door behind him, looking me up and down, maybe trying to figure out why some strange girl is stood sopping wet on his doorstep, or maybe he recognizes me as well.
“Of course that dumbass didn’t tell you,” I sigh. “I’m delivering for Dakota,” I explain, pulling the plastic baggie out of my bra.
“Ah, okay,” he opens the door again, ignoring my hand offering the weed. “Why don’t you come in, get out of the cold?” he offers, holding the door open for me. I consider his offer; He seems kind, and he doesn’t appear to have the money on him anyway. I might as well wait inside while he retrieves it before I catch my death out here.
“Thank you,” I smile, stepping into the warm living room, part of me hoping that Dakota can see me going into the random man’s house. He leads me down to the basement, explaining that this is his bedroom.
“Make yourself at home,” he smiles, showing two familiar dimples on either cheek as he gestures to his couch. I smile back, happily taking a seat. He walks into the bathroom, coming back with a towel in his hand.
“Did you go to Tates Creek Highschool by chance?” he asks, offering me the grey bath towel.
“I did,” I smile. “Only for freshman year though, my family moved the next county over after that,” I explain. That must be where I know him from.
“Y/n, I thought that was you,” he smiles taking a seat next to me.
“Yeah,” I smile back. “You look familiar, but I’m sorry I can’t remember your name,” I blush, a bit embarrassed that I don’t remember him.
“Ouch,” He chuckles. “I thought getting detention together for stealing the teachers’ cigarettes would have been a bit more memorable,” he says, leaning back on the couch. Then it dawns on me.
“Warren?” I ask, shocked. “Little Warren Lipka?” I turn on the couch to face him, getting a better look- the best look I can get in the dim yellow lighting. I don’t believe it! He laughs at my reaction.
“I guess if you remember me as little Warren, I can see why you didn’t recognize me,” he says, reaching for his grinder and papers laying on the coffee table. “You got that 8th, beautiful?” he asks casually. I blush at the comment, pulling the weed out of my bra once again. I hand him the warm baggie.
“That’ll be 7 bucks, sir,” I grin. All the memories come flooding back to me when our hands touch as we exchange the substance for the cash. All the classes we skipped together, all the many hours in detention we spent alongside each other, the cigarettes that we would smoke under the bleachers. He was shorter than me then, he always had his hair buzzed and wore oversized clothes to hide his small frame. I guess he was a late bloomer, because the only remnants of that little boy are the deep brown eyes and dimples displayed like artwork on the handsome grown man in front of me.
“You look really good,” he breaks me out of my thoughts, sparking the joint he’s just rolled.
“Thank you,” I smile. He passes me the paper. I take a hit. “You look good yourself,” I exhale through my nose, handing the joint back to warren.
“So you’re a friend of Dakotas?” He asks, after sucking in a breath of smoke as he stretches his arm over the back of the couch and behind my shoulders.
“His girlfriend, actually,” My response catches him off guard, making him choke on the smoke.
“Holy shit,” he laughs in between coughs. “How the hell did that goon bag you?” he asks, flabbergasted. I can’t help but giggle, taking another drag off the joint.
“Sometimes I wonder the same thing,” I answer honestly. Dakota isn’t exactly the best boyfriend in the world. We’ve been dating almost two years and I’ve caught him with other girls multiple times. He doesn’t respect my boundaries or my aspirations, yet somehow, he always convinces me to stay. I guess when you’re as attractive as he is and as insecure as I am, it isn’t hard for him to convince me that he’s the best I’ll ever have.
“So what’s wrong with Dakota? Why couldn’t he make the delivery himself?” Warren asks, looking down at the joint between his lips as it glows crimson. “Not that I’m complaining,” he clarifies.
“He said he was tired and didn’t want to get his shoes wet,” I laugh, feeling the THC start to take effect. “Can you believe that?” I ask, laying a hand on warrens thigh in my fit of giggles. “He’s just sitting in his shit box a block away,” I say, feeling my eyelids begin to get heavy. Warren raises his eyebrows, looking at me with glossy eyes.
“Wow,” he scoffs. “I actually don’t believe that. I couldn’t imagine having your girl make deliveries for you. Thats some serious pussy shit,” he rolls his eyes, holding the joint up to my mouth. I take a hit from the hot paper between his fingers. I look down at the spliff, then back at him to find his eyes already fixed on me. “If I was your boyfriend, I wouldn’t let you make deliveries for me,” he says in a much quieter tone, the moment is almost intimate as I blow the smoke into his face that’s closer to mine than I realized, but I can’t bring myself to back away. “And I sure as hell wouldn’t want you smoking with me,” he adds, bringing the joint to his lips to take the final hit.
“Why’s that?” I ask in a whisper with butterflies in my stomach, breathing in the smoke that’s slowly rolling off his lips.
“Because it gives me the opportunity to do something I’ve wanted to do since freshman year,” he matches my tone, glancing at my lips, bringing his finger and thumb around my chin, tilting my head up towards him. My heart begins to race at his proximity, I know I should pull away from him, but I can’t. I don’t want to. Just as his lips barely brush against mine, my Nokia rings out, sounding like an alarm, making me jump in surprise, scrabbling to find the small cellphone on the couch.
“Hey babe,” Warren answers the phone, winking at me. My stomach drops. Fuck. I reach for the phone, but warren stands up. “Nah man she’s good she’s right here. I just gave her the mon- hey. Hey!” I hear warren begin to shout. I cease my struggle to grab the phone. “Is there a fucking problem man?” Warren seethes into the phone. I hear my boyfriend’s muffled speech. “Yeah, I didn’t fuckin think so,” he hangs up the phone, handing the small plastic brick to me.
“You look pretty stoned,” he says picking up a coat off the couch, wrapping it around my shoulders. “Let me walk you out. You remember where his car is?” he asks, putting his hand on the small of my back, ushering me to the steps. I nod my head yes, staring at him with wide eyes trying to process what just happened.
“Lead the way then, beautiful,” he grins, and just like that, the butterflies are back. I don’t dare respond, not knowing what will come out of my mouth.
The walk to Dakota’s car is silent but comfortable, still pretty baked, I feel the rain coming down in sheets. vibrating calmly in my bones. I stare up at the orange glow of the streetlights in the night sky in awe. Everything looks so beautiful when you’re high.
“Here he is,” Warren says approaching the small rust bucket of a car that my boyfriend drives. He opens the passenger door for me. After I’m seated, he leans in to look at Dakota. “Don’t have your girl make trips for you anymore, man. What the fuck is wrong with you?” he says calmly but it comes across like a threat, before tossing a couple folded bills at Dakota and closing the door. I’m glad he remembered the money. Dakota would have killed me if I had left it down there.
My boyfriend is quiet. Much more quiet than he normally is when someone threatens his masculinity. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he’s scarred of Warren.
As Dakota pulls off, his Insane Clown Posse CD playing quietly, I look out the side mirror to see warren standing with his hands in his pockets, getting soaked in the rain in nothing other than his t-shirt and jeans, watching me ride away. As Dakota begins to bitch and complain my ear, all I can think about is when ill see Warren again, then I remember; I have his coat. It would be rude of me to keep it. I’ll just have to return it to him.
It’s been a week since my interaction with Warren, and I can’t stop thinking about him.
‘Is it so wrong that I want to catch up with an old friend?’ I ask myself. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with visiting a friend, the issue lies in the fact that the thoughts I’m having of him aren’t exactly platonic.
‘I’ll just drop his coat off, thanking him for the kind gesture and be on my way.’ I tell myself as I climb into my car. ‘Okay, maybe I could make some small talk with him, that’s innocent enough. Yeah, ill ask him about his job, if he’s going to school now, stuff like that’ I manage to convince myself that this will be a short, polite visit with an old friend, but a part of me must know the truth because I tell Dakota that I’m going out with my mother for lunch.
I park my vehicle on a side street near the Lipka house, just in case Dakota drives down here for whatever reason. I grab Warrens coat and walk up to the porch.
‘Maybe he’s not home and I’ll just hand it to his parents,’ I think as I knock on the door. The thought disappoints me, but maybe it’s for the b-
“Y/n!” Warren exclaims as the door swings open. “What a pleasant surprise,” he crunches on a Cheeto, crinkling the bag as he folds it shut.
“Hey Warren,” I smile at the man standing in front of me while he licks the Cheeto dust off his fingers.
“Come in, its freezing,” he steps aside so I can enter. I frown a bit.
“Well, actually I’m just here to return your coat,” I hold out the slick material.
“How kind,” he flashes his dimples. “Are you in a rush?” He asks as he retrieves his jacket.
“Well, no…” I trail off, trying to think of an excuse, but its hard to excuse yourself from something you want more than anything else.
“Then come inside real quick, darling, just to warm up,” he winks at me and I cant help but giggle. I surrender, stepping into his warm home once again, and following him down to his room.
I sit down on his couch as Invader Zim plays on his box tv.
“This may be a bold assumption,” Warren starts as he sits down on the cushion next to me. “But I think you may have come back for something more than the raincoat,” he suggests, looking into my eyes.
“Warren-“ I begin, but I don’t know what to say. He’s right. I want to desperately finish what we almost started last week. Just the faint brushing of his lips against mine has made me feel something I’ve never experienced before. I need to feel him-
“Free weed, right?” He grins picking up the rolling tray.
Oh.
I can’t help but blush. I thought for a moment that Warren had already forgotten about our last encounter, but the wink he sends my way suggests that he meant exactly what I thought he meant.
“It’s not often that I don’t have to match,” I admit, pulling my legs up to my chest.
“You mean with friends, right?” Warren asks before he licks the thin rolling paper, holding my gaze as his tongue slowly slides across the wrap.
“Uh,” my breath hitches in my throat. Damn he looks so good. I’ve never wanted to be a rolling paper so bad in my life. “No, I mean in general. Dakota says he’s, uhm, running a business. So I have to pay or match what I smoke every time we, uh, spark. Or else I’m stealing from him,” I mutter out. Warren smirks at the pink raising in my cheeks once again. He knows exactly what he’s doing. Thank God he can’t see the pool forming in my underwear.
“No offense y/n,” he sparks the joint, inhaling a hit of hot smoke. “But Dakotas pathetic,” he breaths out.
“None taken,” I laugh as I take the paper from his hand.
“I mean for more than just the way he treats you,” he explains as I pass the joint back to him. “I’ve known him for a while. We met through a mutual friend, a few years ago. Started smoking together, then started dealing together and breaking into the chain stores around here, ya know, the ones that just throw shit away while people are starving,” he begins to explain as he sinks into the couch, leaning his head back, blowing a cloud of smoke towards the drop ceiling tiles of his bedroom. I stare at him, taking another hit, hanging on to his every word. I could listen to his voice all day. “Soon he started shorting people on weed, over charging behind my back, he was jealous of how well I was doing, always trying to one up me, bragging about how he’s making more money than me, not caring how he achieved it. Then one night, he decided he was going to try and break into a store by himself, of course he chose the corner store down the street, the one owned by the little old lady,” he chuckles. “I beat the shit out of him as soon as I found out,” he takes a hit. “Pussy didn’t throw a single punch back. Just curled up on the ground. Worst part is; he didn’t even get anything. She chased him off with a broom,” he runs a hand through his long brown hair, finally looking at me as he hands me the spliff.
“Wow, I guess that’s why he seemed so scared the other day,” I giggle. I should feel bad, this guy just told me he beat my boyfriend up, but I almost want to thank him.
“That’s also why I get a discount,” he grins as smoke rolls out of his nostrils. “But for once,” he leans in closer to me. “I’m jealous of him,” I can feel his breath on my face. “Seeing you ride off in that car with him last week was painful to watch. You should have been right here with me,” he pushes a loose strand of hair out of my face, and I melt into his touch.
“Well,” I take in a shaky breath, unable to resist those coffee-colored eyes. “I’m here now, Warren.” And with that, the world ceases to spin as he crashes his lips into mine. I’m suddenly aware of my quick heartbeat, every ounce of blood flowing throw my veins, the electricity that shoots from Warrens hands into my body. The smell of smoke on his breath and the slightly stale air in the basement invades my senses. The kiss is desperate and hungry; something I haven’t felt in years. I moan into his mouth as he pulls me into his lap to straddle him.
“This is wrong, Warren,” I pull away reluctantly.
“No beautiful, it was wrong when he called me asking for Chelsea’s contact last month,” he pants. The mention of that whores name makes my blood boil. She’s his most recent side piece. “Had I known he was with you, I would have beat his ass again instead of sending it,” he says honestly, as his hand runs gently up my hip. My mind is made up in an instant. I take the joint out of his hand, inhaling one last hit before I set it in the ash tray. I slide down to the floor on my knees in between his legs before I take my sweater off, tossing it to the side.
“You’re right,” I grin as I reach for his buckle. The pop of the metal releasing ringing through my ears as I shimmy the jeans off his body. I look up at Warren through my lashes, his eyes wide staring down at me with his bottom lip tucked between his teeth. The sight makes my core tingle.
“May I?” I ask palming him through his plaid boxers, feeling his dick stiffen under my touch.
“I insist,” he grins, helping me slide the boxers off. My eyes widen at his length in front of me. He’s perfect. I take him into my hand, holding his gaze as I let spit drip from my kiss bruised lips onto his tip, allowing me to stroke him easier. He curses under his breath as I move my hand up and down his now rock hard dick. I smile to myself before wrapping my mouth around his tip, slowly moving down his length until he hits the back of my throat, then I hollow out my cheeks, as I begin to bob up and down. Warren lifts his head to take in the sight below him. He rests a gentle hand on the back of my head.
“Fuck, you look so pretty with my cock in your mouth,” he groans, instinctively moving his hips in rhythm with my head. I hum in response as I bring my other hand underneath his length to massage his balls, earning a low moan from him.
Soon he takes over, holding my head as he thrusts into my mouth. I push him in as far as possible, gagging on his length. He stands up so he can properly fuck my throat. This isn’t something that I normally do, I never allow Dakota to use me like this. But right now, I think I would let warren do absolutely anything he desires, and I would enjoy every second of it. This is the first time I’ve ever been so turned on from pleasing someone else. My underwear is soaked my arousal and he’s barely touched me. The praise and moans coming from Warren is enough to get me off. The way his eyes peer into mine as he violates my throat, bringing a gentle thumb up to wipe the tears that creep out of my eyes makes my heart flutter.
“Come here baby,” Warren pulls out of my mouth, I gasp for air as he picks my up to carry me to his bed. He pulls his shirt over his head and asks permission to pull my pants off. I nod quickly, earning a chuckle from him. “You did so good for me,” he lays a kiss on my forehead, using his shirt to wipe the tears and spit from my face, I smile at the sweet gesture. He pulls me into a kiss after climbing on top of me, both of us now completely naked. Warrens hand wonders down to my heat, dipping a finger into my entrance, I whimper at the contact. “You really got off to me fucking your throat, huh?” He smiles against my lips, feeling how wet I am for him.
“Please just fuck me Warren,” I beg. He smirks as he lines himself up with me.
“You ready, beautiful?” He asks. I nod, impatiently scooting closer to him, begging for contact. He chuckles as he slowly pushes into me. Being stretched out has never felt so good. There’s almost no pain as I easily take him, a loud moan escapes my lips
“Shh,” he smirks as he continues to push into me, stifling his own moans. “My folks are upstairs baby, not so loud,” he explains.
“I’m sorry,” I giggle. “You just feel so fucking go-“ I cut myself off with another loud moan as he begins rocking his hips at a steady pace. I clamp my hands over my mouth to muffle my moans. Warren looks down at me as he he pounds into me, a hand reaching down to hold my breast’s that are moving in rhythm with his hips.
“God, you’re so stunning,” he praises as he uses his other hand to push his curls out of his face. The sight of Warren on top of me is something that I never want to forget. If this is the last time he has his way with me, I want to remember this moment for the rest of my life. His hungry eyes that take the time to admire every inch of my body. The way his hair bounces as his cock pounds deeper inside me than anyone has ever been.
Suddenly, he pulls away, leaving me feeling empty as he lays down beside me.
“Come here darling,” he rests his back on the head board as he pulls me on top of him. “I want you to ride me. Can you do that for me baby,” he asks as he lays sloppy kisses on my neck. I giggle in response as I straddle him, happily allowing him to fill me once again. I let out a moan of relief as that void in my stomach is satisfied.
“Fuck,” Warren grunts. “You take me so well, beautiful,” he whispers as I bounce up and down on his cock. I lean forward to kiss him, muffling the moans coming from both of us. I move my hips in unison with his as his hand grips onto my ass spreading me open so he can pound as deep in me as possible. Im positive he’s leaving fingernail makes in the soft skin, but I don’t dare stop him. Warren reaches a finger down to rub circles on my clit, giving me just what I need to approach my release.
“Fuck,” I moan into our desperate, wet kiss. “Just like that Warren please,” I beg. Feeling my body heat up and my swollen cunt begin to throb. As Warren thrusts exactly where I need him, I come undone around him as I erupt in a fit of moans and praises. The euphoria quickly filling my body as my release drips onto Warrens twitching dick. He quickly throws me off of him, cum shooting up onto my chest and on to his stomach. I swiftly dip my head down, bringing him into my mouth to milk every last drop out of him.
“Fuck y/n!” He moans in surprise. Now it’s his turn to cover his mouth as he rides out his orgasm. I pull away to lay next to Warren, our chests heaving in unison.
“Holly shit,” he laughs after few minutes of comfortable silence. “That was…you were…wow,” he turns his head to smile at me, already looking at him.
“I can say the same to you,” I giggle, running my hand over his chest. He brings me in for one last kiss, this one gentle and kind.
“You can use my shower if you’d like, I’ve made quite the mess of you,” he smirks.
“Thank you,” I smile standing up. “Uhm, we’re definitely not going to tell Dakota about this, right?” I ask, suddenly feeling… not guilty… but nervous and almost excited in a strange way.
“My lips are sealed, beautiful,” he winks, taking my hand to guide me to his bathroom.

the soft whirring noises from his nose wake you before his alarm does.
Swing shift at the plant had Eddie’s sleep schedule completely out of whack. Some nights he’d be falling asleep at the table during supper, long curls bobbing as his head jerked forward.
There were days where you’d find him snoring, splayed out on his back on the thick rug on the floor of the baby’s room. Toy blocks in his hands, trying to be the dad he promised himself he would be. A dad he didn’t have.
And earlier tonight when he came home with grease lined under his fingernails, exhaust from the heavy machinery freckling his face, he let out a deafening yawn.
“Gotta be back in at 4,” he said after hugging you tight and tickling your sides. His soft lips pressed to the crown of your head.
You crane your neck to meet his lips and nod at him. The bags under his eyes were prominent tonight. Instead of going to bed early like you had suggested, after supper he spent the evening curled up in his recliner, rocking the baby to sleep while he read story after story.
This is why you loved him so much.
Both of you had come from broken homes, and when you wound up pregnant senior year, the odds were not in your favor.
But Eddie stepped up. You both finished high school early. Earning diplomas in December and he immediately started working at the plant with Wayne. Long hours for a decent paycheck. He was determined to not fail.
When the neighbors next to Wayne’s trailer moved out after a death in the family in Texas left them millionaires, Wayne marched into the landlord’s office and put a down payment on the trailer.
$250 later the trailer was home. Eddie danced with you under flickering lights as he held you from behind, pressing kisses into your neck. Promising you a good life. His thick hands on your growing belly, rubbing it softly.
Auntie Robin and Uncle Steve helped on the weekends to clean the smoke stained walls and provide the latest gossip from Hawkins High.
Chrissy Cunningham? Caught blowing Mr. Higgins in his car during first period.
Steve had a date with Nancy Wheeler tonight.
Dustin took over as DM for Eddie and was doing really well.
You smiled through Robin’s fast paced words and when her and Steve left that night Eddie asked if you missed highschool, hanging his head in sorrow at fucking things up for you.
Not a chance when I have you. The promise splayed thick on your smile, sweet against his neck.
When the spring flowers bloomed in May, you had the baby right after Eddie’s birthday.
  The best birthday present ever.
He had said with tears in his eyes, you knew he would be the best dad, he spent his lunch breaks reading books on parenting. He saved every dime from his paychecks— determined to make enough so you wouldn’t have to work.
He was a good man, the best dad you could ever imagine. And he deserves the world.
So tonight when the alarm went off at 3 o’clock, you turned it off before he could wake. Tip-toeing past the baby’s room and into the kitchen to make some coffee.
Scooping two heaps of the off brand coffee into the white paper filter you press the on button and watch as the brewed coffee gently tinks into the glass pot.
Painted toes skip over the creaks in the floor and back to your bedroom, where the man who made all of your dreams come true laid to rest, bare chested with two names inked over his heart, yours and the baby’s.
His arms were curled over his head and his snores were light. Untucking the sheet from its place under the mattress you crawl beneath it careful to not knee anywhere on Eddie.
Up paled legs sat a pair of blue checkered boxers, the button undone from moving around during the night. And beneath them the delicious treat you were after, soft but still fairly large and thick, nestled with a pinked sack and a dusting of curls.
Trailing your nails along the waistband of the patterned blues, you work them down his hips with ease. Tired from already working 55 hours this week, Eddie doesn’t stir.
His cock springs out with a thud against his thigh, asleep like it’s owner, but enormous in size.
Dribbling a line of spit from your puckered lips you let it flow over his pink mushroom head like you were icing a cake, spreading it around with your thumb, rubbing the slit deep. A few jerks from your spit covered hand and Eddie moans in his sleep. His thick cock at full alert, veins on display for your lips to suckle.
You run your tongue from his sack up the shaft and around the peak. Kitten licks at first then long broad stripes. When you take his head into your mouth and swirl your tongue like you’re tasting a popsicle, Eddie finally wakes. A moaning grunt and then immediate panic. You pull the covers off your head and wipe your mouth while smiling wildly.
“Babe? Wh—what’s going on?” Eddie says sleepily, his hair askew and eyes still blinking from the sandman’s sleep.
“Shhh..” you shush, looking into his eyes and taking him whole into your throat in one swift gulp.
He moans and bucks his hips up into your face.
“Fuck,” he groans, his breathing erratic and breaking as you swallow him further, hands working double time in a twisting upward motion. Your spit running down to his balls.
You release him with a slow slide, gasping for breath as he holds your hair in his fists.
His eyes were squeezed tight and open immediately when you lick his slit, hungry for the salty seed.
  “Bend over,” Eddie grunts, “now.”
Throwing the blankets off of you both and standing fast. He grabs your vibrator from the nightstand and clicks it to the on position, giving it to your waiting hand between your bent legs, your face smashed into the mattress.
He hikes the sleep shirt up your hips and sucks in a breath when he finds you soaked with no panties on. Glistening from the street lamp shining through the thin curtains, a feast for the taking.
“Jesus Christ,” he says, slapping his hands hard against the plush of your doughy ass, “my perfect fucking girl.”
You whine when the vibration hits your clit, humming along into the mattress to soften your expecting screams.
Eddie’s thick head slips through your folds and you moan deep. Mirroring his own as you wiggle your hips for more.
Burying himself inside your gummy walls you suck him in tight. A cozy wet hug around his dick.
“I swear to God this pussy was made for me,” he groans into the open air, pistoning his hips deeper and smacking against the fat of your ass.
When a drop of spit hits the button and his thumb runs circles around it you squeal in pleasure. Puckering around his thumb, giving him a small kiss and begging him to go deeper.
He moans and mutters under his breath. Fucking into you harder.
The vibrator is working overtime on your swollen clit as Eddie bucks harder into you, his cock thick and hard jutting deep into your aching hole. You scream out as your legs start to shake and Eddie begins to twitch inside of you.
Before you can both come, he flips you over and scoots you both up on the bed. Your legs wrap around his hips and he dives into your lips. Kissing them sweet then harsh, the same way he kissed you for the very first time when you were both thirteen.
You were sitting on the handlebars of his bike, your bare legs wrapped around his black jean styled waist, the studs of his belt making indents in your calves. He was standing on the gravel, the bike balanced in his strong hands. Dust circling around you after he skidded to a stop around the curve of the trailer park road. Your lips teasing him for far too long that summer.
His hips thrust into yours and his lips moves down your neck, the sweet spot above your beauty mark acting as an ‘x’ for pirates treasure.
His hair tickles your skin and you hold his head in your hand and press him further into your neck. When your walls tighten and you whine out he cums hard too, filling you up full.
He presses sweet i love you kisses into your collarbones and licks a path up the curve of your chin. Devouring every ounce of your skin he can.
“Mrs. Munson,” he teases, lips grinning goofy, “I must have been a good husband to deserve such scandalous behavior at 3 AM.”
You tickle his under arm and wiggle your way from beneath him, “Mrs. Munson?” you question, an eyebrow quirked into your disheveled hair. “Since when are we married?”
Eddie stretches on his back and fumbles into his drawer, wrestling the wrapper off a blue raspberry ring pop. He holds it up to you like a prized possession, “a placeholder for when the layaway is done being paid off at JCPENNEY’s.”
You giggle like a child and hold your out hand.Eddie threads the ring on your finger and licks the diamond shaped sucker.
“You keep waking me up like that we’re gonna have a whole litter of Munson’s running around, and besides,” he says, kissing up your arm and biting your shoulder, “I kinda like you,”
  Kissing him deep you giggle.
  “I kinda like you too.”

you fit into their little family perfectly - naturally. -> in which y/n encounters an old ex
a/n: some angst for yall this time babiessssss (but also nanami being the best and perfect boyfriend we all know he would be!)
pairing: nanami kento x f!reader, itadori yuji x f!reader (platonic)
“Yuji-kun, don’t stray too far—”
“—And just what is this?”
Almost instantly, your entire body tenses at that familiar voice. A voice you haven’t heard in years but hasn’t changed even a little since the last time. Your hand which had been reaching out for Yuji’s own freezes as you slowly turn your head over your shoulder, breath getting caught in the back of your throat when you meet those familiar pair of cold, mocking eyes.
Otherwise known as your ex-boyfriend. Suta Seisho.
A man you’d started dating straight out of highschool, a relationship that had lasted a total of four years and that you did not look back on fondly. While Suta had been sweet and kind at the beginning, the perfect doting boyfriend that you’d spent all of your years in highschool crushing after, it didn’t take him long to reveal his true self which just so happened to be selfish, manipulative and every plain sense of the word, abusive.
It had taken you years to realize that and even longer to get away from him.
To see him here now, despite how hard you’ve worked to get past the relationship, him and his abuse, makes you feel like you’re suddenly a freshly adult woman being slapped around and yelled at for every little thing done wrong. It didn’t matter what or how bad, if it pissed him off, you paid for it in one way or another.
And those feelings you’d felt at the time… they didn’t just go away. No. It was more like you’d buried them, deeper and deeper as the years passed, created walls to protect yourself and your emotions. Walls that he’d teared down in mere seconds just by saying something.
You’d thought he moved. You thought… you thought you’d never have to see his face again.
Least of all that same grinning face that sometimes still haunted your thoughts at your most vulnerable.
A tug on the hem of your dress pulls you from your own terrifying thoughts and your eyes fall down on Yuji who stands by your legs, fingers gripping onto you tightly as he stares up at you fearfully. Yuji was an ever-observant boy, and despite his lack of intelligence when it came to academics, he was incredibly smart when it came to understanding others. He had a keen eye and noticed things you didn’t even notice half of the time, let alone what a child should be capable of understanding.
He’s been like this since you first met him and it was something you’ve always loved and cherished about him as you got to know him better and become a part of his life.
But now? You wish he couldn’t pick up on how afraid you must be because it seemed he was just as scared, the young boy picking up on your emotions and feeling the same, simply coming from a lack of understanding.
You reach for him, taking his hand in your own and squeezing, offering a small,  albeit forced smile in an attempt to reassure him as you gently nudge him behind you, keeping him as far away from Suta as possible.
Then, you turn to Suta.
His eyes drift from you, to Yuji, before falling back on you with a loud, cruel laugh. “What… did I knock you up or something?”
“He’s not yours,” you hiss out, mustering all your courage as you send him a nasty glare.
Suta’s face twists, “you were always a whore.”
Your lips part, eyes widening. “Don’t say such a thing in front of him,” you call out, panicked as you crouch, moving to cover Yuji’s ears as he stares up at you, confused, worried. You let your hand then fall on top of his head, trying to provide a sense of comfort to the small boy while keeping your eye on Suta. “He’s just a child.”
Suta rolls his eyes and he takes a step forward. “Whatever.”
Pushing yourself to your feet once more, you try to stand confident, shoulders squared as you step completely in front of Yuji, one hand reaching behind you to make sure he’s safely tucked behind you. “What do you want, Suta?” You shake your head at him desperately, huffing. “It’s been two years. What could you possibly want?”
He shrugs. “I was just walking around the mall when I caught sight of you and I couldn’t quite believe my eyes. After all, you did just walk out on me, and then you made yourself impossible to find. No matter how hard I tried to search for you, you disappeared as if in thin air.” He laughs, scoffing at you as he takes another step forward. You lean back, grip tightening on Yuji. “Imagine my surprise when I see you here, with a child no less.”
His gaze lowers, darkening, peering at the bit of Yuji he can see from behind your legs.
“So… who’d you whore yourself out to and get knocked up by?” Suta laughs, making a cruel joke out of you like he always had. “I offered you everything and you ran out on me… what, find it better with someone else?”
You can feel your heart pounding madly against your chest, echoing in your mind as you try to ignore the way your body shakes and the way your legs feel like jelly beneath you. You cannot let yourself appear weak in front of him. He thrives off of it, and the second he sees it, he’ll know he’ll have won and you couldn’t let that happen with Yuji here.
“I did, actually. In fact I found a man who's never once treated me wrong or raised a hand to me. And I left because you were a cruel, manipulative man and I no longer wanted to be anywhere near you,” you call out, “and Yuji isn’t mine but I love him all the same. Not that any of it is your business, Suta. I’d like you to leave me alone.”
You move to turn, urgency in your steps as your hand rushes to guide Yuji forward. But before you can make it even just a step, there’s a hand wrapping around your wrist, grip tight and pinching that it pulls a cry of pain from your lips as you’re tugged back, losing your grip on Yuji as you fall, stumbling into Suta.
You quickly gather your bearings, trying to pull away, lips parting to say something before a smaller voice interrupts you; “hey, don’t touch her!”
You realize it a second too late, a blur of pink drifting across your vision until suddenly Suta is groaning out in pain, hand letting go of you to hold his shin, right where Yuji had delivered a rather nasty kick. The boy was rather strong for his age as well, as you knew, and gathering by a single glance down at Yuji’s furious face, you knew he put every ounce of his strength into that kick.
You blink, stunned.
Then Yuji’s hand is grabbing at yours, tugging as he turns back at you; “we have to find papa!”
You snap out of your stupor then, remembering that Nanami had stepped away for a second to answer a work call. You nod to Yuji, but then you catch Suta moving out of the corner of your eye, and then see the way his glare settles on Yuji, a nasty look in his eye.
You react without thought, pulling Yuji into your arms just as Suta’s leg would’ve made contact with him—instead, Suta’s kick hits your side, and your eyes widen at both the pain and the mere thought that he’d been about to kick a child with this much force. The cry that leaves your lips is instinctive, pulling passerby’s eyes on the both of you as fall to your knees, an ache radiating through your entire body.
A elderly man steps into your view, concerned but still the only one willing to do something; “hey, what are—”
“Fuck off, old man,” Suta hisses, ignoring the many pairs of eyes watching the both of you as he reaches for you once again, taking your arm in his and all but yanking you up to your feet. A gasp is pulled from your lips as he spins you, free hand reaching back, and your hands move to cover your face on instinct, recognizing the action, expecting to feel the pain of a slap across your cheek.
Only, it never comes and you’re suddenly let go, stumbling back.
A moment later, your eyes slowly peel open, only to see Nanami’s familiar figure standing in front of you. His left hand has caught Suta’s in mid-air, stopping him from making contact with your cheek while his right hand presses against your stomach gently, guiding you back.
“Kento…” You breathe, stunned.
He glances at you over his shoulder, eyes softening the second they meet yours; “are you okay?”
Lips parting, you nod, slowly.
Then, two small hands grab at yours. Your eyes fall on Yuji, blinking out of your stupor when you see the tears welling in his eyes and the worry in his gaze as he glances up at you, quickly kneeling to grab him and pull him tightly into your arms, pressing a firm hand against the back of his head to soothe him.
He must’ve been so scared, you think to yourself. You can’t believe you even let that situation escalate as much as it had.
Nanami watches you, only turning away when he’s sure you’re okay.
“I’ve called the cops,” the elderly man from before calls out, shaking his phone in his hand in front of him for emphasis at Suta, before leaning down to quietly ask you if you’re okay.
You smile at him, nodding.
Suta’s eyes blaze, watching everything before turning to Nanami. He tries to pull his hand out of his grasp, but Nanami holds tight, grip tight enough he swears he hears a crack.
“Let go, man! What the hell!”
“What kind of person not only tries to hit a child but a woman as well?” Nanami hisses, and your eyes widen, slowly standing, with Yuji now held tightly in your arms, having never heard Nanami sound so… angry before.
You watch as Nanami leans forward, eyes dark; “you’re lucky I don’t do worse.”
Multiple footsteps echo a second later and your eyes drift past Nanami to see three security guards of the mall making their way over. Suta loses all of his confidence then, face paling as he glances around at the many sets of eyes on him, the security guards surrounding him a second later and Nanami only lets go then as they pull him back.
A security guard walks up to you, his tone gentle as he asks you what happened. You tell him, holding Yuji close, nodding when the security guards thank’s you for your cooperation, moving to the elderly man who easily backs up your story.
Just as the security guard leaves your side, you see another leaving Nanami’s side, rushing over to him a second later.
He turns to you the second he hears you, face falling with relief as he grabs onto you, eyes falling on Yuji, making sure he’s okay, before turning to you.
He doesn’t need to ask.
“I’m okay,” you breathe, breathless. “I promise,” you assure, noticing out of the corner of your eye Suta, surrounded by a fourth security guard who’d made their way over. His eyes blaze as he meets yours briefly, and you can only imagine what he’s saying about you. “I’m sorry… I never should’ve let Yuji be in a situation like that, I just—”
“Y/N,” Nanami cuts in gently, cupping your cheek as he shakes his head at you. “I’m not mad, I’m just worried. I only saw the end of it when he pulled you but—”
“He tried to kick me,” Yuji cries out, turning to his father as his hands move to emphasize his point, “but Y/N-san didn’t let him, papa! She was like a superhero.”
Your cheeks flush at Yuji’s words, smiling fondly at him as you shake your head, brushing back his hair.
Nanami smiles gently at Yuji, “then I owe Y/N a big thanks,” he assures his son, before turning to you. “You promise you’re okay?”
You nod, leaning into his touch. “I… Yes… I was startled. I know I told you about Suta but I haven’t seen him since the day I left him and if I’m being honest, I was scared. I didn’t know what he wanted and I was worried he’d hurt Yuji.” You turn to the boy at your word, hugging him as he lets his head rest against you.
“I shouldn’t have left,” Nanami curses himself, shaking his head. “What if worse—”
“But nothing worse did happen,” you cut him off this time, easing his worries as you smile down at him. “Because you didn’t let him.” Then, pausing, you add; “and that lovely old man who we have to thank.”
Nanami laughs lightly at that; “yes, of course.”
You set Yuji down then, letting him grab onto his father’s hand and move to step towards the elderly man who is still, rather expressively, explaining the story to the security guard. Just before you completely can though, Nanami’s hand is falling on the small of your back, halting your step.
“You promise you’re okay?” He whispers, low enough so only you can hear, worried eyes dancing across your figure, as if searching for any injury he might’ve missed.
You smile, leaning forward to press a kiss to the corner of his mouth. “I promise. Thanks to you.”
And you realize, despite it all, there’s a small bit of satisfaction that now Suta can truly understand what you meant; you had found yourself a better man in all the ways Suta never could be.

Tumblr media
Bachira Meguru
Bachira was never very popular with girls, so when he started getting anonymous love letters, he was excited. Someone is crushing on him? However, as time passed, it seemed like this person was more obsessed than in love - writing about how cute Megu looks under the shower (how do they know?) and thirsty messages about how amazing he smells - it got very uncomfortable, especially when you don’t know who is sending you all of this. So he asked you if you could pretend to be his partner, just so the stalker would leave him alone.
Fake dating Bachira was actually a lot of fun. Since you were close friends, so you essentially did the same things, except his hand was wandering on your back a lot, around your waist, in your hair. He started to call you Bumblebee in front of others, making you blush with his affectionate behaviour. To be clear, he was clingy before, but now Bachira Meguru was just a menace. However, it didn’t take you long to get used to wearing his sweatshirt when it was cold, and holding hands around his teammates “because you’ll never know if the stalker is seeing or not, so we have to be like this all the time”. But as time went on Bachira started to be more bold. At first, he kissed your hand occasionally while you walked home, and eventually, he moved on to kissing your forehead goodbye. He didn’t care if it was around people or not anymore. You couldn’t control the butterflies in your stomach every time you felt his lips on your skin.
Obviously the creepy stalker sent some nasty stuff to Bachira about being heartbroken, however after two weeks you got a familiar envelope in your shoe shelf. Scared that it might be some threat, you opened the letter with shaky hands.
“Take care of him well. I can see how much he loves you”
It caught you off guard, but without a second to think about it, you felt familiar hands around your waist. “Good morning baby” Bachira’s face was right next to your ear as he planted little kiss on your cheek. And just as you looked at him you thought: god, I really don’t want this to end.
He saw the envelope in your hands and got angry at the spot. “I really hope they don’t even try to mess with my-” you shook your head and showed him the letter. “It’s good. You are good” You stopped for a second with a sad look on your face. “I guess if it worked we don’t have to-” the bell starting classes stopped you from ending the sentence. But Bachira knew what you wanted to say and he hated it.
You spent morning classes thinking about Meguru way more than usual. The silence on his part was frightening you, because what if for him it was really just an act? What if he doesn’t mind to come back to things as they were?
On the lunch break you felt your phone vibrating.
Megu: Can we talk? Come behind the gym
Without answering you just stood up and went feeling anxiety taking over your body. When you arrived and saw a familiar silhouette, your heart skipped a bit. Meguru came closer and pushed you gently against the wall and put his forehead on the crook of your neck. Feeling his breathe so close to your skin make you shiver.
“You are right, you don’t have to pretend anymore” he said, and your throat got dry as you felt like tearing up any moment.
“But if we stop pretending, and do it for real, does that mean I can kiss your lips too?”
Isagi Yoichi
Isagi was your best friend since childhood, the best neighbour, an amazing companion to play board games with. And of course, you were always the loudest fan cheering on all of his matches.
Isagi got very popular when he became one of the best players in his high school and girls and boys finally saw the side of him you saw all along: a very athletic, nice and cute boy. And a very, very handsome one.
At first it flattered him that so many girls came to see him play; however, the louder they screamed, and they squeaked every time he looked in their direction, the more annoying it was to him and distracted him from the game. “Isagi, control your fun club” he heard from angry Barou.
But to be fair, he had no idea what he could do with this issue. He was simply too kind to snap at them, and too shy to stand up to them either.
“Maybe they’ll stop if you date someone?” Bachira mentioned in the locker room after practice. Then he whispered right to Yoichi’s ear: “You have someone who you want to date for some time already, right, Isagi?”
Isagi blushed. Of course there is only one person he would even consider to date: you. But how could he ask you to date him because of something so stupid? He couldn’t do that for years now, so how will he grow a pair now?
“Maybe just get a fake girlfriend” he heard Aiku speaking. “If you are such a virgin you can’t actually get one.”
So obviously, when he asked you, if you could pretend to be his partner to get rid of unwanted attention, how could you say no?
And that’s how you two ended in this situation: holding hands with your childhood friend while going back home together. His hands were so warm, and big, and for the entire route you felt hyper aware of his presence.
“So… how was the practice?” You asked to fill the silence. Normally you’d talk for hours and joke all the way home, but apparently Isagi is also not used to holding hands.
“It was very good… I think the fan club might get more and more discouraged” Yoichi barely could make a full sentence, that’s how much he focused on the way your hand felt. If he knew he could hold your hand everyday, he would ask you to pretend to be his girlfriend years ago.
Pretend. Yeah.
However is it still pretending if you are doing that on your way home with no one around?
“So… what are your plans for the weekend?” He asked trying to get himself together. His team didn’t have to play any matches this week, which was a rare occurrence. And gave him some time for himself.
“Well, I don’t have any particular plans” you started holding his hand tighter. He blushed. “I was thinking maybe I’d study some, watch a movie… on my own”
Oh?
“Do you maybe…” he started while looking away, so you won’t notice his embarrassment. “Want to watch it together? Or… or study together?”
You looked on the ground. Isagi started to regret his boldness - what if you don’t actually like him this way? What if you are actually embarrassed to hold hands with him and it makes you uncomfortable, and you only let it happen because you are a good friend? With growing silence he started overthinking everything and started taking his hand back, just to not make you feel more uncomfortable.
But you held it tighter and raised your brow.
“And what do you think you are doing, huh?”
“I’m sorry, that was very stupid” he started. “I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable, you are already spending so much time with me because of this whole situation, just tell me and I’ll stop bothering you so much”
For a football star he was really insecure, but what could he say? He crumbled under the idea that you might be annoyed with his touch or by his presence. Even if he’d have to keep his feelings for you forever, he’ll do it if that mean he gets to keep you as his friend.
“Yoichi” you started quietly. “You don’t make me uncomfortable. You could never bother me, you know? I actually…” you felt the feelings stuck in your throat. “Missed you a lot, since you are so busy with your football career. I missed spending time with you. Just us”
Isagi felt adrenaline was rushing through his veins just like before he was about to shoot a goal. This was an occasion he was waiting for so long.
“Do you maybe want to go on a date together?” He said without hesitation. You blinked a little surprised.
“You mean like, a fake date?”
“No. A real date. Just us. We can go to cinema, or maybe for a picnic, or we can just study together too…” he held your hand so tightly his fingers turned white. You smiled.
“Yeah, I’d love that”
Kunigami Rensuke
Saying that you and Kunigami were very good friends would be an overstatement. You were a manager of his football team for a year now, and you had a massive crush on him, but you never really talked regularly.
Kunigami was always a very polite guy, thanking you for every towel, every water bottle, always helping you with tasks that require strength, but he wasn’t very talkative, so you just assumed he was doing it out of simple generosity - he was a truly decent person. No wonder so many girls were swooning whenever he was on the field, it was always like this. His physique, handsome face, manners - you sometimes felt jealous over girls who could just openly state their feelings for Kunigami, because in your position it would be inappropriate. So you kept it nice and hidden.
Until you regretted it deeply.
There was this one particular fangirl who was on every match, cheering the loudest, always bringing Kunigami food “with lots of protein just as you like”, made herself a shirt that looks just like his football jersey. She was indeed very annoying and most of the team would either find her unbearable, or, as Otoya, were always staring at her ass in this very short skirt she was wearing.
And then you heard one day as you just arrived to school, that Kunigami has a girlfriend. It was like time stopped for a second. Till now you never expected your crush to date someone else, so in split seconds your heart was aching. Was this that girl? Did she finally succeed in her obnoxious tries?
The whole day at school felt like a fever dream. “Would’ve, should’ve, could’ve” was all over your brain. Maybe you should’ve confessed? Be more aggressive in your tries for his heart? Could you even have any chances?
You took your lunch out and tried to find a quiet place to eat, so you can spiral into your teenage depression a little more. But while going around school you passed the girl’s bathroom, just to hear The Short Skirt crying to her friends. You stopped right behind the door.
“He said that he has a girlfriend… and that I should stop coming on the matches… because it’s not okay towards her…” she took breaks to sniffle.
“You shouldn’t cry about it, we know you are way better than this half-ass girlfriend! There’s no way he got someone better than you!” - her friends were seriously doing their best.
Your brain was working fast. So it wasn’t her? You never saw Kunigami talking to any girl outside of you and her. Does he have a girlfriend outside of the school? Actually, Kunigami gives this vibe “neighbours to lovers” or “childhood friends to lovers”, so it wouldn’t be that far off.
You went to think about it in silence to one of the quieter wings of the school, and was just about to eat your sashimi, when someone aggressively entered the room.
“Oh, good. I found you.” you could see Kunigami was running just seconds ago. He was breathing just as he just ended a marathon. Was he that desperate to tell you that your presence bothers his girlfriend too? “Can I sit with you?”
“Sure” you only let out. He took a place meter away from you and didn’t say anything for a while. It started to get a little awkward, so you brought your bento closer to him.
“Do you have any lunch? Want some sashimi?” you went into your manager mode. If your players don’t eat well, how can they play well? Kunigami considered your offer for a split second.
“No, thank you” As always, you thought, Man of few words.
“So…” he started, while looking at the wall. “I don’t know if you heard the rumours yet”
You tried your best to keep your composure. “Yeah. You have a girlfriend? Congratulations” probably the lack of enthusiasm sold you away. At worst you can always pretend that you are just worried that he will play worse if he’d date, right? Because he is a valuable player.
“Yeah this one. So I kinda wanted to talk to you first, before you hear it, but…” he rubbed the back of his neck with embarrassment. “Yeah I should have told you yesterday. Sorry”
Oh? You frowned your brows. It’s not like you are such good friends that you would be the first person he’d say that he dates someone? Again you barely talk outside of practice. “Yeah I don’t think you owe me anything. Again good for you, Kunigami-kun”
“No, I don’t think you understand what I mean” he said quickly, like he was afraid you’d leave. “I don’t have a girlfriend.” You felt a little lost now.
“Actually…” he started, still not looking directly at you. “When I told this cheerleader girl that I have a girlfriend, I did it just so she would stop acting like this. It’s not true”
Oooooh. You blinked. Well, now the day started to get a little brighter. “And you wanted to tell me that… why?”
If you sit closer, you’d see how Kunigami’s ears were bright red. “So Bachira said, that maybe I should ask you to pretend to be my girlfriend for a while, so we would be sure that it looks realistic” he paused and finally looked at you. You never saw him looking so vulnerable. “Of course you don’t have to do anything. I was thinking that maybe I would walk you home, and we would eat lunch together, and we should exchange phone numbers…” With every word he looked more and more red. Could he be any more adorable than in this moment?
You smiled, and then dramatically sighed.
“I don’t know, Kunigami-kun. That is a lot of heat I am taking on myself - you have quite an aggressive funclub” you could feel how he freezes in fear, afraid of where are you going with this. Just like a scared puppy. “I think lunch and walking home are not enough. You owe me at least one date per week, where we go to the cinema, or to the arcade…” you thought for a while. “Honestly if you will not after every goal look at me and obnoxiously scream THIS ONE IS FOR YOU BABY, I don’t know if this is worth it. If I’m gonna get murdered by this witches, at least I wanna know you embarrassed yourself enough to compete with Shidou’s cringe. ”
You could feel how all of the stress just disappeared from his shoulders. He really had all of his little speech prepared.
“Okay” he said smiling. “But I’m not saying anything sexual, some things Shidou screams during the matches are seriously nightmare’s material.”
“Ah shoot, no INTO THE WOMB?” You decided to tease him some more, as he is technically now your boyfriend.
“Please stop”
“Then we go to the arcade twice per week”
“If you skip the embarrassing screaming, I can even win you plushies on every outing”
And just like that, you kinda wished The Short Skirt will never be fully convinced about you two, so you can spend time like this for long enough, so it will just become real.
And so did Kunigami.

When you were about five years old, your kindergarten teacher asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up. Most of your classmates gave answers such as “teacher” or “doctor” or “superman”. You, on the other hand, stood in front of the packed gym on the night of your kindergarten graduation, your head held high as you gave your answer.
“A Stanley Cup Winner.”
Of course at the time, you didn’t understand that women could not win the Stanley Cup (you figured that out at age 8 and it caused the meltdown of all epic meltdowns). The closest thing women could get to the Stanley Cup was a gold medal at the Olympics. You worked your ass off from the time you could successfully skate without falling, to your senior year of highschool. Every waking moment you had was spent at the rink, running drills from sunup to sun down. You lived and breathed hockey, and as the daughter of the late great Michael L/N, you had big shoes to fill.
You just never imagined the moment it would all come crashing down.
It was a dumb idea, in hindsight. It was a really dumb idea. Weeks from the US Olympic team tryouts, you agreed to joining your friends at the lake. A place you liked to avoid like the plague. It wasn’t that your parents and coach kept you away from having any fun in your life, you simply chose to ignore the dangerous stunts your friends like to partake in. But for some reason, you decided to take a chance and take a break from the grueling training schedule your coach had created. It was a hot summer day in the middle of July, and a day out on the boat sounded like heaven.
You should’ve said no to trying to wakeboard. You should’ve just stayed on the boat, watching the epic wipeouts by your friends. It would’ve been the smart choice to make. . . but you never were that smart. One bad landing into the wake created by the boat, had you breaking the surface with a horrible scream. Your friends reacted quickly, jumping into the water to help you stay afloat as you screamed in pain, your collar bone protruding awkwardly under your skin. They got you to the hospital quickly where you were told you had broken your collarbone and torn your ACL in your knee. The physical pain wasn’t even as bad as the emotional pain that came a few weeks later.
“I’m sorry, but you will never play hockey at the level you are playing it now. I suggest. . . quitting altogether if you want to avoid having a shoulder replacement before you’re 30.”
A bullet to the chest would’ve hurt less.
At first, you laughed at the doctor’s suggestion, all but telling him to fuck off and asking to see his credentials. Your parents had tried to talk some sense into you, telling you that maybe heeding the doctor’s advice could be beneficial. Your dad knew guys from the league who had shoulder or knee injuries, and it never ended up in their favor. Years of pain and suffering, turning to questionable methods of dealing with the pain, missing out on crucial time with their families or significant others. But you were stubborn, and didn’t want to quit playing when you were about to try-out for the biggest moment of your life.
But you never made it that far. In fact, you never finished your senior season. From the first puck drop, everything was shit. You weren’t as strong as you had been, having lost muscle in both your arms and legs. You felt off balance, and were cautious of every move you made on the ice. You knew the statistics, you were at a higher risk of tearing another ligament in your knee after tearing the first one. Your collar bone, even though it had healed without having to have surgery, clicked and popped anytime you tried to make a slapshot. You were making mistakes you hadn’t made since peewee hockey. Your teammates were growing increasingly annoyed, your coaches were becoming exasperated, and your dreams of making it on the US Olympic team had slowly drifted away. It was a hard choice, but in the middle of your senior year, you decided to hang up your skates for the last time.
Even though you weren’t actively playing, your love for the sport didn’t die along with your Olympic dream. In fact, you found a new way to get involved with the sport, deciding that you were going to major in public relations and team management. Your goal had shifted, and now you wanted to be the first female Hockey manager.
But like most goals, that was easier said than done.
It was 2024, and even with the establishment of the Profession Women’s Hockey League and the US Women’s Hockey team winning numerous gold medals on the world stage, women in the league still weren’t taken seriously. You were told all through college, as you sat in your team management class to choose a different sport like swimming or volleyball or gymnastics. More “women friendly sports”. You weren’t going to throw in the towel and give up on your dream, no matter how many teams had denied you.
When you were hired by the North Island Daggers, you weren’t sure what to expect. They were known as the joke team of the NHL. Always finishing last every season, being most teams shoe-in win when they played against one another. Having gone from working as a PR rep for the Dallas Stars, you felt as though this was a demotion, a punishment for a freelance article you had written about how women were being treated in the NHL. You knew the article was going to be risky when you sat down and wrote it. You just didn’t expect to get a call an hour after the article was published telling you that you were being sent to work with the Daggers.
“We’re happy to have you here,” Beau Simpson, spoke as your heels clicked down the long hallway behind him, “As you can see, we need a little PR help.”
“Yeah, I saw that fight between Holloway and Seresin the other night.” The whole NHL fan base saw the fight, but you weren’t about to tell Simpson something he was probably painfully aware of, “Interesting decision to bench him before going against Endmonton though. He’s your strongest player.”
“Can’t let him get away with bad behavior,” Simpson shrugged, stopping outside a large conference room with glass walls and a large oval table in the middle, “Hey, I’m sorry about your dad. I got the honor of playing against him my rookie year. Hell of a player. Terrible thing, cancer is.”
“Yeah, thanks,” It had been months since your dad died from cancer, shocking the world of hockey. You thought by now you would have been used to hearing condolences from strangers, but they still made your ears burn and your face flush.
Simpson nodded courtly, opening the door to the conference room where two sharply dressed men and a woman sat.
“Gentlemen, this is Y/N L/N, the new PR rep for the North Island Daggers,” Simpson introduced you as the two men stood up, and you immediately knew who they were.
“Pete Mitchell and Tom Kazansky, co-owners of the North Island Daggers,” You answered, shaking both of their hands, “An honor to meet you, both.”
“The honor is all ours, Miss Hamilton,” Pete smiled at you as he sat down.
You wanted to correct him, but decided not to. Sometimes, it was easier to let people call you by your father’s last name, than try and explain why you dropped it and took up your mother’s maiden name. The world of sports was a game of who you know and who you belong to. If your last name was that of a hall of famer, you were almost guaranteed anything and everything you wanted, and you hated that. When you were vying for the spot on Team USA, you wanted it because you were skilled, not because of who your dad was. The same stood now, as you were trying to work your way up in the hockey world. You wanted this job because you were good at it, not because your dad was hockey royalty.
“I’m Mrs. Wright, the executive public relations and human resource officer,” The woman, who’s blonde hair was slicked back in an impressive bun, held her hand out to you.
“It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Wright,” You smiled at her, trying hard to not gawk at the huge diamond ring that sat on her finger.
“We’re glad you could join us on such short notice,” Tom spoke, “We know that you just got let go from the Stars for a shit reason if you ask me.”
“Thanks,” You muttered, clasping your hands on the conference table in front of you, “I am happy to be picked up by the Daggers though. My dad really enjoyed his time here as a rookie.”
“Damn, we missed him when he left,” Pete shook his head, as if he were remembering the “good ol’ days” as your father referred to him during his rookie season.
“The reason we hired you, Miss Hamilton,” Mrs. Wright spoke up, breaking up the reminiscing, “Is because we are in the middle of a PR storm. We have a player who has caused quite the controversy lately and is in danger of losing his sponsors. From our research, we know that you do fantastic work with building player profiles, turning rookies into known players, making the bad guys look like the good boys. We need you to do that.”
“Okay,” You nodded, “So am I taking over the social media accounts like I did in Dallas, or-”
Mrs. Wright looked apprehensively at Pete and Tom, who sat up a bit in their seats.
“Not necessarily,” Pete cleared his throat, “You will be paired one on one with one of our problematic players.”
Your eyebrows furrowed, before realization struck you, “Wait. . .” You held your finger up, “You hired me to be a glorified babysitter?”
— — —
“I don’t need a babysitter.”
Jake grunted as he set the barbell back on the rack above him. His gray workout t-shirt was drenched in sweat as he sat up, looking both his agent and trainer in the eye, “I’m fine on my own.”
“You got in a fight,” His agent, Steven, deadpanned.
“Everyone gets in fights, its hockey,” Jake shrugged as Javy handed him his water bottle.
“With your own teammate.”
Jake glanced over to the other side of the workout room, where Wren Holloway was working out with Bradley Bradshaw, still supporting a black eye from the fight that broke out a couple of days ago on the ice. The fight, which was being dubbed “The Dagger Civil War,” was definitely not a highlight Jake liked to have hanging over him. But in the game of hockey, sometimes the tension runs high, and in that particular game, Jake had gone out looking for a fight from the moment the puck first dropped. It was just unfortunate that his opponent was his teammate.
“Look,” Steven shifted on his feet, crossing his arms across his chest, “The fight is the least of our issues right now. We have sponsorships ready to pull out on you because you’ve been labeled the “hot head” and the “problematic child”. And what is this that I hear about an affair with the coach’s wife?”
Jake groaned, standing up from the workout bench, and taking the sweat towel from Javy’s hand. Both of them followed Jake through the weight room. The Daggers might’ve been the worst team in the NHL, having a history of one play-off appearance in the 70 years since they’ve been a team, they sure did have one of the nicest facilities Jake had ever been in. State of the art work-out and physical therapy rooms. Rehabilitation pools, and an indoor track. In-house chefs that served breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus tons of snack shops throughout the building. And the best part, two full sized practice rinks.
Jake walked over to the smoothie shack, where a bright-eyed hopeful girl sat down his regular smoothie order, his name with a heart around it.
“Here you go, Jake,” She batted her eyes as Jake took the smoothie, making a clear display of taking off the sticky note with her number on it and setting it back on the counter.
“Not interested, but thanks,” He nodded, turning back to Javy and Steven, who glared at him, “What?”
“You sleep with her too?” Steven asked and Javy snickered. Jake was going to shake his head no, but had to double check who it was behind the counter, before shaking his head. Steven rolled his eyes as Jake walked towards one of the rehab rooms.
The moment Jake laid down on the exam table, Javy got right to work. Javy and Jake were like a well oiled machine, they knew one another since they were kids, growing up next door to one another. They played on the same youth hockey team, until it became too expensive for Javy’s family to afford. It broke the young boy’s heart to have to give up the sport he loved, and Jake had begged his parents to help Javy be able to play. Even though the Seresins insisted on paying for Javy’s fees and equipment, the boy didn’t have the same passion for the sport as Jake did, and he thought it would be a waste. Instead, Javy found another way to be on the bench next to Jake, working as the team equipment manager, to athletic training assistant, to athletic trainer for the Daggers.
“Shoulder still bothering you?” Javy asked, grabbing Jake’s arm and moving it in a variety of ways.
“Yeah,” Jake grimaced, “Still has that whole clicking thing going on. Guess that hit from Svec was harder than I thought.”
Javy snickered, remembering the hit Jake suffered a few weeks ago, “He laid you out flat, man.”
“Shut up,” Jake grumbled.
“Mhm,” Steven cleared his throat, directing Jake’s attention back to him, “We weren’t done talking yet.” Jake rolled his eyes, which only seemed to infuriate his manager, “This is serious, Jake,” Steven sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, “Simpson wants you out, wants you so far gone from the Daggers, hell, probably even the National Hockey League.”
Jake scoffed, “I’m the best on the team."
“You haven’t been for weeks.”
Jake huffed again, knowing that Steven was right. He has been off his game for the past couple of weeks. Missing key plays and open teammates. Almost all his shots were deflected or totally missing the net. Not to mention, he felt like his skating had modeled that of a newborn calf, shaky and off balance. The hit from Svec several weeks ago, was just the tip of the iceberg of the list of injuries Jake seemed to have racked up in the past couple of weeks.
“Look, your spot is in danger.”
That got Jake’s attention, making him sit up from his laid back position, “What are you talking about?”
“There’s a kid down on the juniors that is amazing. He’s either been breaking or matching all your records. They are calling him the next you.”
Jake’s eyebrows furrowed. He didn’t really pay attention to any other league but the one he was currently in. Of course, he kept his eye out for any information about the national team. It had been his dream since he got to the NHL to play for Team USA and make it to the olympics. Playing on the junior team had been one of his greatest memories, and when he felt for the first time, he could actually make it in this sport.
How could he have ignored that there was someone breaking all his records?
“Who is this kid?” Jake asked.
“Drake Silvia. He’s signed to UMich, but also a projected first round draft pick,” Steven clenched his jaw, “They want him. And they will have him. . . at your expense.”
Jake felt like his heart dropped to his ass. He had never felt the feeling of fear for his spot on a team before. He’s always been the best. Always been the hot commodity that every team wants, that every coach would roll out the red carpet to get him to visit their team. Before he decided to go straight to the drafts, he had nearly every single college in the country and some in Canada, begging for an ounce of his attention.
“However,” Steven looked around the empty rehab room before leaning in close, “Henderson signed his retirement forms this morning.”
“What?!” Jake spat out, “He’s retiring?”
“No announcement will be made until the season is over,” Steven nodded, “But Henderson is done after this year. . . and the captain spot will be open. It could be yours.”
Besides making Team USA, being named captain has also been on the list of dreams for Jake. All the hockey greats have been captains. Gretzky, Crosby, Hamilton. Jake’s childhood bedroom had their jerseys hanging up in frames. To Jake, no one remembered you unless you were the captain, or won a Stanley Cup. And Jake wanted both. He wanted both as badly as he needed oxygen to live.
Jake sighed, knowing what the answer to his question was going to be, “So what do I have to do?”
A smirk arose on Steven’s cheeks, “If you want to stay on this team, and make captain, you need to abide by the rules. And that means having a babysit-” He shook his head correcting himself, “A personal PR rep.”
“Fine, I’ll take the babysitter.”

the walk wasn’t that far from your dorm room to sakura’s house. you and your friends all decided to walk so you could all drink, but thinking about it, you realize this may have been a bad idea. five super drunk people walking home in the middle of the night on the roads? yeah… the idea wasn’t your brightest.
it doesn’t help that you also dropped your fries earlier in the walk trying to do a cartwheel, so you were still kinda hungry.
the five of you reached the driveway of sakura’s house, which was gated with a small crowd of people and three security guards. you look between each other.
“all this for a college party seems excessive,” jake says aloud. he was right. you would’ve thought this was some high luxury celebrity after party or something.
“for all we know, beyoncé might be here,” yunjin adds.
you wait your turn as the guards scribble things on clipboards, sometimes sending people away with annoyed looks or straight up crying. i guess you knew sakura and her friends were well off, but you didn’t know it was this well off.
finally it was you and your friends’ turn. the guard barely looked at you as he said, “name?” you got a peek at the clipboard to see lists of names along with a small picture printed next to them.
“y/n…” you trail off. “y/n y/l/n? these are my friends… sakura said i could bring them.” you motion to your friends behind you. he flips a couple pages, pen trailing down the page, and lands on your name. it had one of your highschool school pictures along with “FRIENDS ALLOWED” typed next to it.
you cringed a little at the picture, of all the ones she could’ve chosen, she chose that one? you’ll admit, it wasn’t your best photo, and you wished it wouldn’t see the light of day.
the guard stepped to the side and pressed a button that opened the gate. it gave a slight screech before beginning to move and the guard motioned you in without another word. you looked to your friends and they looked just as bewildered as you. stepping through, the gate quickly closed behind you and you heard the guard ring out a “next!”
“if i knew it was gonna be this high security and luxurious i would’ve put on a different outfit,” yeonjun says as you all walk to the door. it’s a big white door with a decorated semi-transparent glass accent.
the rest of the group murmur their agreements. you spent a lot of time on your outfit, not wanting a plain outfit since it was a party and not wanting an outfit that was so over the top you would’ve been overdressed and uncomfortable. you settled on a skirt that was designated as your going out skirt, it was a little shorter than you would’ve liked, and a nice long sleeved cardigan top so you wouldn’t get cold on the walk back to your dorm. you kinda wished you would’ve just went with the over the top option.
you could hear the music from outside and it only got louder as you went in. people were shouting over the music just to hear each other. bodies were dancing everywhere, red solo cups were strewn about, and some people were even in corners already passed out.
“let’s get some drinks!” hueningkai shouted, and you all nodded. there was a whole huge bar set up with staff working. and from the looks of it, the drinks looked unlimited based on the wall of alcohol behind them.
walking up to the bar, the group mainly got either whiskey or tequila. you weren't a big drinker, but tonight was a special case.
“dance with me!” yunjin said, pulling you with her. in turn you grabbed the nearest hand of your friends, which happened to be hueningkai’s, and pulled them with you.
the crowd was so large, you wondered how many people were actually at this party as yunjin led the two of you towards the center. it had to be at least three hundred people, maybe even more with how big the house is. you were only on the first floor.
you all downed your drink and let the music playing through the speakers flow through you. circus by britney spears started playing and you could feel your nerves melt away by the second.
i feel the adrenaline moving through my veins. spotlight on me and i’m ready to break.
“oh my god!” yunjin squealed and jumped a little. “i love this song!” she took you and kai’s hands as she began to dance. you both laughed as you joined her.
i’m like a performer, the dance floor is my stage. better be ready, hope that you feel the same.
in the back of your mind, you imagined the just dance dance to this song and it made you laugh a little. you’re surprised hueningkai didn’t start doing it the amount of times you danced it together. you glanced at him and could tell he was holding it in.
all eyes on me in the center of the ring just like a circus.
you closed your eyes and threw your hands in the air as you danced to the beat. you felt someone spin you and opened your eyes as yunjin sang the lyrics.
you felt alive dancing in this small circle with some of your closest friends.
at some point between the end of the song and the middle of the next, you three decided to get more drinks, ready to speed this night up. you don’t even know how many cups you downed… two? three, maybe? all you knew is that you were feeling it now. the world around you was grainy and your head was blissfully clouded.
“what do you think are on the other floors?” jake asked the group, which had migrated to one of the couches a little away from where everyone was dancing. yeonjun shrugged, “let’s go look!”
so you all got up and made your way up the grand staircase towards the door.
on the second floor there were more people dancing, the music continuing through the speakers. surprisingly, there was another fully staffed bar. on the third, there were still a lot of people dancing, but a lot more people seemed to be either playing drinking games, or lounging around. another staffed bar.
“this floor looks more fun,” hueningkai commented and you agreed. the floor was humongous and there were doors to other rooms that you couldn’t see inside.
you pointed to the mostly empty ping pong table that had a couple people playing beer pong, “do you think they’ll let us join?”
when you all walked up to ask they immediately let you join. they were clearly very drunk and spilled the bottle of tequila on the table as they poured it into the ten small cups.
one of the guy’s handed you the ping pong ball, claiming you’re first, and you gladly took it. you were teammates with jake and the guy was teammates with a girl you were assuming was his girlfriend.
your goal was the top of the triangle as it was the closest, but who knows with the alcohol buzzing through you. you hoped the other team were more drunk than you were.
steadying yourself, you locked your eyes on the cup, trying hard to anticipate the amount of force you’d have to put behind the throw. you threw it and held your breath. you released it as you realized you overshot it and it landed in a cup in the back row.
“yes!” jake shouted as he jumped up and down holding you, causing you to laugh. the guy smiled and shook his head as he picked up the cup and drank from it. he removed it from the table and handed another ball to jake.
jake exhaled and bent down a little, completely zoned in. or as zoned in as he could be. he threw it and it landed in the center cup. “bitch cup!” the guy and his friends shouted, cupping their mouths. you raised your eyebrows, “bitch cup?” you laughed and he nodded.
“he has to shoot from his knees until he makes another cup,” the guy replied. jake turned a circle in disappointment, “fuck!” you heard laughter from your friends and joined them. the guy’s girlfriend took the cup and drank it, then discarded it.
she then took a ping pong ball and immediately tossed it. it bounced off the table next to the cups and bounced to the floor.
“yes!” you and jake shouted, high-fiving each other. you grabbed the ball and handed it to the guy. he took it, inhaled, tossed it, and then exhaled. it landed in the top cup.
“damn it,” you said. you picked the cup up and drank, immediately scrunching your face up when your tastebuds came in contact with the contents.
the round went on for a while until jake threw the ball and landed it in the final cup you needed. suddenly you were crowded by all your friends, jumping and yelling in excitement.
the game continued for about another hour, you and jake in the lead with four to zero. that was, until yeonjun got the final cup and eliminated you two. you picked the cup up, giving him a playful side eye, and turned to walk to the couch as you drank. you were absolutely gone by this point and you swayed from side to side, barely standing, trying to drink and walk at the same time. “woah there!” one of the guy’s friends said and helped you to the couch.
as you finally managed to connect your lips to the cup, you eyes wandered to the opening door, immediately connecting with soobin’s. the stare lingered for a second before you looked away, downing the cup. once you sat on the couch and were steady, the guy went back to his seat.
you could feel his stare weighing down on you as you saw him move through the floor with his friends out the corner of your eyes. he disappeared and you sighed. you decided to scroll on your phone as you waited for the beer pong game to end.
— SOOBIN’S POV —
anger rushed through him, absolutely flooded him. he wished that he didn’t drink what he did. maybe then he could push these feelings down like he’s been doing all day.
he needed to find sakura. demand to know what the fuck she was doing here.
soobin turned to his two friends, beomgyu and sunghoon, who were drinking out of red solo cups next to him. “where’s sakura?” he almost seethed. he had to hold it together.
“fuck if i know,” sunghoon replied, taking a drink from his cup. “i’m surprised you weren’t following her around like a lost puppy,” taehyun said, sitting next to him. sunghoon shoved him, causing some alcohol to spill on taehyun’s pants. taehyun laughed.
“she’s probably upstairs or something,” beomgyu added. soobin downed his drink and slammed the cup on the table, standing up. “woah… what’s wrong with you?” taehyun asked, shocked by the outburst. soobin gave a wry laugh, “nothing.”
making his way through the floor towards the stairs, his eyes landed once again on y/n. she was laughing at the fact that one of her friends completely missed the cup by a mile. her eyes wandered to his and she immediately turned and looked away, talking to some guy soobin didn’t know.
what the fuck? who the hell even is that? was she doing this on purpose? to make him jealous?
he had to stop himself from going over there. clenching his fists at his side, he continued to the stairs.
once soobin got to the fourth floor he did a quick scan around. like the previous floor, this one was also packed. a guard stood at the entrance. soobin paid him no mind as the guard stepped to the side and let him through.
towards the back, sakura sat on a couch surrounded by a group of girls, two of them the girls from yesterday. her head turned to him as he approached.
“well if it isn’t the man of the hour!” she smiled and took a sip from her margarita. the ice clinked together as she did.
“we need to talk,” soobin said, and turn on his heels, not bothering for her response.
he walked towards the center of the floor close to one of the walls where it wasn’t as crowded. he heard the click-clack of sakura’s heels as she followed, shouting his name.
sakura grabbed soobin’s shoulder and pulled him towards her so he would turn around. as soon as his eyes locked on her, he angrily asked, “what the hell is wrong with you?” she gave him a dumb look, which annoyed soobin more.
“what are you talking about?” she asked, crossing her arms.
“y/n,” he replied, “why is she here?” sakura dropped her arms. “i invited her for you! i even let her bring her friends.” she rolled her eyes at the last sentence.
soobin took a deep breath. “i didn’t ask you to do that.”
“i’m not seeing the problem.”
when soobin just stared at her, she she sharply exhaled and continued. “i invited her to help you out. i threw this party for you! so she can stop being up her own ass and you can win this bet! can’t you see that i was trying to fucking help you?”
soobin couldn’t keep in his anger anymore. if he wasn’t so buzzed, he’d be seeing red right now.
“i don’t need your fucking help!” he yelled, scaring sakura and causing to take a step back. he raked his hands through his hair and turned, making his way towards the bar that was on the floor. “what the fuck is your issue?” sakura yelled after him. he didn’t know. he really didn’t.
he waved one of the staff over and asked for something strong. from his pocket he felt his phone buzz.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
fuck. fuck! soobin wanted to throw his phone.
why did he just do that? why didn’t he just leave the texts alone?
he knew why. all he was thinking about when replying was sakura’s stupid ass choices. that guy who y/n was talking to. wasn’t she clinging to him when he first saw her?
soobin downs his drink and asks for another, downing that too. fuck, he has to fix this.
like he’s on fire, he jumps from his seat and sprints down the stairs to the third floor. he looks towards the ping pong table where he last saw y/n, but she isn’t there. neither are her friends. he jogs up to the people he saw with them earlier.
“that group that was with you,” he says, “where’d they go?” a girl tells him they left the floor about five minutes ago. shit, soobin thinks, i need to catch her before she leaves the house.
he turns on his tracks and runs down the stairs. second floor, nothing. he makes it down to the ground floor and frantically searches around.
spotting yeonjun with a cup in his hand heading towards the door, he runs up to him and grabs him by the arm. yeonjun turns to him, eyebrows furrowed. he opens his mouth to speak but soobin beats him to it.
“y/n… where is she?” soobin breathes.
yeonjun looks him up and down. harshly removing his arm from soobin’s grasp, he spits, “it’ll be better if you just leave her alone. nothing good ever comes from being involved with you and the people you call your friends.” with that, he turns his back on soobin and walks out the door.

masterlist.
summary: choi soobin has always been the popular kid surrounded by his popular friends. y/n… not so much. one night, soobin and his friends make bet that soobin can’t get y/n to date him in a month. unfortunately for y/n, they’re a hopeless romantic.
A/N: the ball dropped😨 quite literally… enjoy! i don’t think i’ve mentioned this before but please ignore the timestamps for this smau lmao
taglist: @imagineyour-kpopboy @gothgyuu @carengene (if your name is bold it wouldn’t let me tag you!)

Tall & Handsome & wants birthday kisses
Tumblr media
pairing: ricky x reader
genre: highschool au (same verse as shy, shy, shy), fluff, romantic tropes
tw/tags: longtime friends, birthdays, coming of age vibes, a lot of banter, feels, cuteness, vandalism of school property, gyuvin will be fine, violent thoughts that are mostly unserious, many kisses, rizzky
wc: 1128
summary: for ricky, the best birthdays are spent with you
a/n happy ricky day~ little late here but it's 520 somewhere ~
Read part 1 here~
“You know I’m going to miss you right?”
You’re 12. It’s Ricky’s last birthday with you before his family moves and puts oceans and time zones between your friendship.
“We have each other’s SNS,” he points out. “You already made me promise to send pictures when the plane lands. Don’t make it weird.”
“But I will,” you insist. “I’m just saying, you know, it’s going to be weird not seeing your ugly face all the time.”
“You’re ugly,” he retorts because puberty is starting to get to the both of you, making it awkward and strange in ways where only you can understand what the other is going through.
“I hope you stay ugly forever.”
“Take that back.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Nope.” You have the audacity to make a face at him.
“Take it back.”
“Okay, tell me you’ll miss me too.”
“Ugh, you’re so annoying.”
“Say it or I won’t take it back and you’ll just be ug-”
“Okay, okay, fine.”
You look at him expectantly, arms crossed over your chest with the most infuriating expression that a 12 year old can muster on your face. He takes a deep breath, staring back at you.
“I’ll miss you.”
“Really? Is that it?”
“Did you ask me to say anything else? I said it.” Okay fair enough.
“Fine. I knew you’d miss me anyways.”
God, you’re annoying. It’s even more annoying when you give him your gift and it’s an amazingly huge sketchbook along with a pizza-themed birthday card where you’ve written too many words for him to even read in one sitting. And it’s the most annoying when Ricky gets off the plane and he’s in his new bedroom in his new house and he realises that-
-well, he actually really misses you too.
__________________________________________
“Happy 16th, Ricky-ah!”
It’s been four years since Ricky’s had a birthday with you beyond the greeting messages you’d send, maybe a short call if the timing is right.
It’s absolute chaos. (But that’s mostly Gyuvin and Junhyeon’s fault)
Somehow, they’ve managed to turn his desk into a- he didn’t even know what to call it. Black construction taped over the top, someone (definitely Gyuvin) managed to hang silver streamers right from the ceiling above and his chair completely covered in gold foil and shiny red cellophane in some sort of convoluted throne.
They also tried to surprise him when he walked into the classroom but jokes on them, Ricky learned how to hold a poker face and keep himself from flinching a long time ago. Probably from that time when you were 10 and made a game out of who could give each other the bigger scare. It was stupid. So stupid that Ricky decided to learn how to do that because you were so cute when you were frustrated.
Oh cute what? He’s pretty sure 10 year old Ricky didn’t have any reasoning like that.
He’s just letting you put that silly plastic crown on him because he’s nice and it’s been awhile and he doesn’t want you whining about it to him the whole day. Nevermind that the look he gives Gyuvin promises blood, murder and death if the other boy so much as said anything.
(Gyuvin says something anyway, Ricky’s really going to punch him one day no he isn’t )
You even get him one of those little cakes from that convenience store and cafe near your school. It’s your lunch break and you’re leading the birthday song, sitting across from him, clapping your hands as Gyuvin, Junhyeon and even Gunwook decide to try and do their own harmonic rendition.
“Make a wish, Ricky-ah~”
Maybe Ricky’s definitely deaf from Junhyeon’s creative decision to belt the song out at maximum volume. Maybe his fist is twitching in an effort to resist the urge to sock the shit-eating grin off of Gyuvin’s face. But suddenly, all he can see is how your eyes shine, even if that’s probably from the light or the glow of the candle.
Ricky makes a wish and he realises that-
-well he might actually like you more than he thinks. (And by more than he thinks, yes, like more than friends).
__________________________________________
“So now will you tell me what birthday gift you want?”
Your boyfriend gives you that coy look which honestly, you don’t know how he’s capable of doing at your young age.
It’s been pretty great so far. You had birthday lunch with the dog mafia, their unofficially adopted children and a few other friends at Ricky’s favourite pizza place. And you’ll have dinner with his family later.
Right now, you’re at his house, lazing the afternoon away because Ricky had insisted on spending time together, just the two of you. Honestly, you’re pretty sure he was about one more side comment away from actually strangling Gyuvin if you hadn’t tugged him away.
“Remember when I turned 12 and you called me ugly?”
“Eh, all of a sudden?”
“You never took it back.”
The incredulity of your stare is very much felt by both of you. Dumbfounded, literally.
“What- are you- is this for real? You’re kidding me right?”
He takes your hands in his, pulling you towards him so you’re staring right at each other. You tilt your head back, seriously he needs to stop with the rizz.
“Take it back.”
“Seriously?”
“Take it back.”
“Okay, okay I'll take it back. God, anything else you want?”
He leans in, pressing his lips to yours. You jump a little, not exactly expecting that. And then you melt. He pulls back, leaving a hint of strawberry and the smell of his cologne.
“19.”
“What?”
“I want 19 of that for my birthday.” He’s managed to keep a completely straight face but you have eyes and the pink on his cheek and at the tip of his ears is definitely not a trick of the light. Well, two can play a game.
You lean forward, cup his face in between your palms and peck him on the nose a few times, giggling.
One. Two. Three. Four.
You press light ones over each eyelid, propping yourself up to kiss his foreheads, littering small ones all over his cheeks.
Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten. Eleven. Twelve. Thirteen. Four-
Maybe you lose count at some point, your lips lingering over his, soft and sweet. You playfully bite at his bottom lip before pulling back to look at him. He’s definitely trying not to smile too much.
“For the record, I never really thought you were ugly.”
“I know.” Your nose scrunches up and he kisses the corner of your mouth.
“You’re lucky it’s your birthday”
“Ah, so can I have 19 more?”
Honestly? He can have all the kisses he wants. Even on days that aren’t his birthday.

My Headcanons for Societyboy!
Tumblr media
I tried giving him features the other boys didn't have, like eyes that are downcast and a hooked nose. I also gave him adult braces because I thought it was a cute mental image to have this angry douchebag arguing over people and getting self-conscious when you stare at his teeth and laugh. He had pretty black hair that he thought was too boring to get your attention again, so he tried bleaching and coloring it himself, ending up with this. He doesn't take care of it, his hair is a mess aah. Also, he's self conscious of Quest because he has a skinny little body and that man is 😳
I have a bit of writing on him that I'm not sure I'll actually get to finish, but my take on our ex is:
He's an egocentric loser we confessed to first at the end of junior year of high school. He accepted because it meant he had bragging rights over his other friends. You stay together through senior year, the excuse of you both being busy trying to get into college truimphed over any actual intimacy taking place (most of your dates were just you watching him play a game in his room or studying).
Finally it was over, you both got accepted into the same college, graduated, and over the summer, you both prepped to move into your dorms (seperate). As the first year went on, you both made separate friend groups. Slowly, he started feeling uneasy. He realized there was a good chance you might leave him with so many new people in your life, and so much time spent apart; to combat this, he kept insisting on you following him to his hang outs, or staying over at his dorm instead.
You didn’t mind him becoming clingy at first; he had always felt very independent from youbin highschool, and he wouldn't care about stuff like cuddling and holding hands together before. This was nice.
But it only got worse as the years trickled by, and he became very demanding. You were slowly becoming an island, unable to hold friendships without upsetting him, relying on him, and being left behind anywahs when he spent his time with his own group. You graduated, and lasted a few months living together before you finally snapped and broke things off.
He was furious. He didn't think he did anything wrong and thought the progression of things was just how relationships were meant to be. He convinced himself that you were only throwing a hissy fit, and you'd come back. When it wasn't happening as immediately as he wanted, he started stalking you online, unable to comprehend how you could live without him.
When you'd post good things about your new life, vitriol overtook him and he started commenting shitty things, making his own posts, insulting you and hating you and still, expecting you to one day wake up and come knocking back.
But you wouldn't.
And it's been over a year already. He's still alone, blocked on all your accounts (though he got new socials to keep looking at you), in the same apartment (despite being offered to move somewhere cheaper because you might come looking for him), and still thinking of you daily. He didn't want to allow himself to feel it, but he's sad.
He misses you so much. He misses sleeping by you, misses hearing you talk about your hobbies, misses your cooking, your voice, your hugs and kisses, all the ways you made him feel special and not like the sad sack of shit he really was. It's time he finally owned up to his mistakes, internalize how he fucked up your life, and actually try to get better at being more thoughtful of you. He still thinks it's you he has to end up with, somehow, in some way.
As he browsed through your social media again, that's how he found the link you surely clicked on. It's somewhere neither you nor him have ever made an account on. That means he's not blocked there! His heart beat fast as he copied it but didn't click it yet; he had to calm down. This had to be like, the universe affirming him, right? Throwing him another chance to see you again. He wanted to make it count. But he was... anxious, too, after so long. He had to wait to buy and take a few edibles before he finally resigned himself to what would come next. He'd win you back. He joined the server.
(Then, enters Societyboy's Route. Not Quest's, this one would be similar but different.)

Landslide // part two (J.T.K.)
Tumblr media
Summary: You’ve loved him for as long as you can remember, does he feel the same?
Pairings: Jake Kiszka x F!Reader
Warnings: angst, established friendship, heavy alcohol consumption, mentions of alcohol consumption, feelings of heartbreak, sadness, yelling, arguing, feelings of unrequited love, very brief feelings of abandonment, asshole jake in the beginning. If I missed any lmk!! (Vaguely proof read, excuse any mistakes)
A/N: SORRY FOR MAKING YOU WAIT SO LONG!!! Due to tumblrs weird limit I have to split up the 2nd part in two so there will be a 3rd part that will be up by the time this one is. I truly have no excuse for the delay other than I wanted this to meet everybody’s expectations and I didn’t know how to properly execute all my ideas for the second part of this little mini series. I thank you all for such kindness and patience regarding landslides part two. Alas, here it is!!
Also: it starts off with more of jakes perspective on the blow out and then will slowly transition into the present time. Hope you guys enjoy!
Part 1
“..I started seeing someone from our crew…i really like her y/n”
Jake saw the hope leave your eyes the minute he said it. The sparkle he desperately loved now incredibly dimmed and your hands no longer holding his own, suddenly his confidence on the matter seemed to waver.
Jake always brushed off Josh's advances on getting him to make a move on you, dismissing it as his twins way of meddling and trying to stir the pot. How is he meant to explain the way your lips no longer smiled with your eyes?
Any other person wouldn’t have noticed the sudden hitch of breath for it was so discreet, but of course Jake did. He’s studied your person as if he wanted to become fluent in the language of you, so to say. He’s spent so much time with you over the years all of your habits had become second nature to him. Except there was one thing about you he could never read and you made sure of it.
He still knew you all too well and even if it was for a millisecond he noticed the missed beat in your response, he saw the barely-there glossiness coating his favorite irises and quickly blinked away despite the wide smile still on your face.
The average person would easily be fooled but your entire energy shift was almost spelled out in bold letters in front of him. Jake had started to question if he really was making the right decision.
Since about the 7th grade you had Jake completely enamored, unbeknownst to you. At first it was nothing more than a prepubescent school crush, no more than quiet stolen glances and bad attempts at flirting that had gone unnoticed. When highschool came around he realized girls found him attractive, and like any other teenage boy would do, Jake milked it. He stopped being hyper-focused on you and channeled that energy elsewhere.
You were so adamant on making sure he never got any idea of you seeing him in any romantic light, he genuinely believed it would never happen and realized maybe it was stupid pre-teen boy hormones convincing him he felt more for you than what he did and eventually forgot about his feelings for you all in all.
By the end of junior year your family took a vacation for the summer. You came back for senior year with a different aura to you, you had bloomed beautifully so to say. In simple terms, puberty hit you like a truck. The new effect you had on him scared Jake, he decided it was then easier to have you solely as his friend than trying to decode the rush of dopamine he gets just looking at you. Much like yourself, he denied any and all attraction.
Now as you sat across from him inconspicuously heartbroken, his entire perception shifted. He thought he was crazy when you clutched onto the lapel of his coat so desperately when he held you. His mind went hazy in the moment, almost drunk off the close proximity. He hadn’t thought about you in that light in years. Squashed any attraction into the abyss of his soul never to be thought of again.
Seeing you after the extensive tour, reignited the spark. You threw him off his game, he was so certain he had gotten over you and that Laura was the correct path for him but the way you looked into his eyes made him want to drop everything for you right there.
He continued the conversation nonetheless before the overthinking consumed him whole, he was certain he wasn’t thinking clearly. He relentlessly repeated to himself that you had solely seen him as a friend, there was just no way you were upset he was seeing someone. You were thirsty and dust flew in your eye or something, he made any and all excuses.
Once the conversation had come to a wrap and you hurried your way back inside to process the news. Jake too was in a frenzy, he was so sure of himself and his decision just about an hour ago.
Laura was in theory the perfect match, or so he thought. At first it was a casual hookup while he was on the road and as time went on he had grown to truly like her, he didn’t love her so to say but she definitely made him feel something he hadn’t felt in a long time and he romanticized her.
He hadn’t so much as thought about another because as much as he wouldn’t like to admit it, the thought of you had made a home within his head. Now that Jake was feeling something other than suppressed feelings for you, he wanted to hold on to that and convinced himself that was his fate.
Now that he sees there is even a slight possibility you do see him that way he feels like he’s fucked any and all chances, but do you? His brain couldn’t crack the code and he began to stress himself out.
On his way inside he ran into Josh.
“Hey did you see where y/n went? She ran off on me” Josh’s eyebrows perked up as his brothers words now privy to your hurried entrance from the patio.
“Ran off? Did you scare her off or something?” Josh joked unaware of the tension still rising in Jake’s shoulders.
“Very funny. No, I just finally told her about Laura.” Jake retaliated.
“Laura? What about Laura?” The eldest twin now confused.
“I made it official with her, I wanted to introduce y/n to her. You know.. have my best friend mingle with my girlfriend?” Josh’s eyes blew wide at the realization you were indeed not okay.
“When? This is the first I’m hearing of this. No offense but I thought it was casual for you guys..” Josh trailed off.
“Well I really like her, Josh. Why are you being so weird about it?” Jake asks, his insecurity on the decision now growing tenfold.
“Not being weird just…sudden is all. Can’t say I’ve seen her” Josh lied as he made his way to see just how much damage was done.
Now his own brother wasn’t even as enthused as he thought he’d be. It's not that Jake seeked validation from others regarding his life decisions but now that the two of the most important people in his life aren’t solidifying it, he’s succumbed to shameful overthinking.
He needed a drink to release some of the tension. Jake reached for the bottle of Jack as his phone buzzed. He poured a glass for himself before picking his phone up.
Message from: Laura
-Omw! See u soon baby.
Jake just shut his phone off and slipped it back in his pocket before taking a generous swig of the amber liquid.
The more he overthought the situation the more he found himself pouring more and more of that Tennessee whiskey into his glass. Eventually his step felt light and his vision incredibly disoriented. He put the bottle away as he realized he’s gotten ahead of himself and the alcohol in fact did not help but drove him to wrack his brain on the matter even more than before.
He saw the short blonde walk in from his peripheral and immediately greeted her.
As he leaned in to kiss her he got a whiff of her insufferably strong perfume, he had gotten so used to smelling yours since you got here that this almost made him nauseous. Even more so now that he’s realized maybe she isn’t what he wants.
“Your lips taste like whiskey sweetheart, drinking without me?” Laura laughed.
“Mmm, maybe a glass or two..pretty little blouse you got on” he slurred wrapping his arm around her waist pulling her in.
“Jake you’ve definitely had more than a glass or two, you’re getting a little excited honey” she giggled
“Just had a few refreshments on an empty stomach is all love..” he replied with his infamous cockney accent.
“I already told you not to do that accent Jakey, it's insufferable” Laura said before laughing it off and stepping away from him to grab a drink.
‘Y/n would have joked back in the same accent with me..' Jake thought to himself.
He quickly rid himself of the thought, why was even he thinking about you? The drunken logic now warping his train of thought, reminding himself that he thought nobody was truly happy for him in the moment.
Surely it was self projection, Jake had a newfound insecurity about his decision and outwardly projected his internalized fears onto both you and Josh. Assuming the reason you guys were so off with him was not because you had feelings for him as he previously thought, but instead it was because you guys were just simply unhappy for him.
Josh wasn’t excited, y/n certainly wasn’t matching his energy. In his mind, it somehow made sense.
Jake's head whipped around as he heard your voice come from the living room. Now was the moment he’s been dreading for the last 20 minutes, best to get it over with now.
“Come on babe, I want you to meet some of my friends” he said grabbing Laura’s hand in his and making his way into the living room as best he could given the liquor was catching up with him all too fast.
“Alright everyone, this is Laura. My beautiful girlfriend.” Jake slurred as he pressed a sloppy kiss to her cheek. Laura smiled wide at everyone and bid her hellos to those closest to her before her eyes landed on you.
She viewed you as competition. Much like Jake's past girlfriends, they saw how much he talked about you and more often than not gave him the ultimatum of them or you. No matter how much he swore you were just a really close friends Laura wasn’t buying it and wanted Jake all to herself.
Jake immediately searched for you. The minute his eyes met your own, a rush of warmth coated his chest. A bright smile flashed on his face as he forgot about his past worries momentarily upon seeing you look at him. He naturally gravitated towards you and motioned for Laura to come greet you to which she happily obliged.
“Y/n, Laura. Laura, y/n.. this lovely lady has been one of my best friends since elementary school” He introduces but Laura already knew this so Jakes formality made her itch with annoyance, she didn’t want to hear any more. She knew to be nice anyway because she saw how important you were to him and if she wanted him to stay with her she needed to get you to like her as well.
Your bright smile made her confidence waver as you rose to wrap her in a quick embrace. She internally grimaced at how kind you actually seemed. Of course Jake respected you, you had such a welcoming energy that Laura was beginning to envy. Even she was warming up.
“Oh my gosh! You’re y/n! I've heard so much about you, I love your dress” as much as Laura wanted to be selfish you really did look beautiful. She wasn’t expecting for you to be as nice as everybody had said.
“Thank you, you’re so kind. It’s a pleasure to meet you” you flashed her a smile as your cheeks warmed at the sentiment.
Laura wasn’t up for any more of the niceties with you. She had hoped there would be some confirmation to her negative preconceived notion about you, ultimately finding none. The only seemingly respectful way to end the conversation was to excuse herself to the bathroom.
Jake gestured a hand toward the couch behind you for the two of you to take a seat.
“Soooo what’d you think?” He says
“Short interaction, but she seems like a great girl Jakey. As long as you’re happy I’m happy.” You respond with a tight lipped smile, eyes avoiding his as you toy with loose strings on your dress.
Jakes head immediately swarmed with every negative thought he could muster. Your lackluster of a response had somehow been a confirmation to his idea of you not being truly happy for him.
“That's it? That's all you’re gonna say?” He asks a bit harsher than he had intended to. Jake immediately saw your brows slightly furrow and your eyes dim, his immediate regret quickly concealed by the whiskey fueling his fight.
“Well I don’t know what you want me to say…a-are you drunk right now?” You stumble over your words now anxious that this was all heating up faster than it should be.
“You could at least act a little more enthused for me. I mean do you even care at all?” Jake knew he was being dramatic, in his warped logic it was better to paint you the villain and play victim than to deal with his internalized feelings for you now resurfacing on top of the immense guilt he was already feeling. Foolishly not thinking of the potentially jeopardized friendship at hand.
“I’m sorry? I don’t know why you’re getting so upset with me. What do you want me to do Jake?”you say lowering your voice, scared others around you might catch wind of whatever this dispute seemed to be.
Jake knew he was being irrational and could no longer come to terms with it, resorting to walking away from it now that he realized he’s causing more damage than good.
“You know what…just forget it, you could at least act like you care.” Jake spat.
He harshly grabbed his drink from the corner table, leaving you behind in complete shock. Jake felt guilty the minute he grabbed his drink and left. He never blows up on you and didn’t know what had compelled him to speak to you like that. Sure you guys are mean to each other as a joke every now and again but this felt all too real.
You made your way to collect your things. Sam had been eavesdropping but could only catch Jake's end of the conversation, for you had made it a point to speak quietly. What he didn’t see was you and your teary-eyed escape. Sam however was just as drunk as Jake if not more and just wanted to be entertained with drama.
“Hey man, what happened?” Sam asks, stopping Jake in his tracks.
“Y/n is pissing me off, that’s what. Where’s Laura?” Jake says, eyes distant as he searches the area for the blonde.
"I can see that asshole, that's why I’m asking what happened.” He quips before continuing.
"You guys haven’t fought since like the 9th grade” Sam remarks.
“I’m not in the mood for your smart ass fucking comments Sam.. really fucking not.” Jake says, shaking his head. He takes a sip of his drink and attempts to walk away before Sam stops him once again.
“Dude just tell me what happened, i wanna know.” Sam prods again.
“I can just tell she’s not happy for me. I was excited to tell her about Laura and she just went all….. dry. Fucking got up and left when i confronted her about it."
“She left?? We just got back, there’s no way she would just leave.” Sam questions.
“Yeah. Well, she did.” Jake says, flashing the youngest kiszka a sarcastic smile.
He scoffs before continuing as he slowly starts to rile himself up again.
“…couldn’t even stick around, how immature.” seemingly forgetting your flee was a product of his harsh attitude.
“Thats fucked. If it helps, I’m happy for you dude… weird that she would just leave. Kinda selfish you don’t think?” Sam responds now just drunkenly wanting to instigate.
Sam's words were music to Jake’s ears, his mood instantly lifting hearing someone telling him what he wanted to hear. It wasn’t that nobody was in Jake's corner, in fact you and Josh both were incredibly happy for him no matter what. It was Jake refusing to come to terms with his emotions and essentially self-sabotaging.
However, hearing Sam call you selfish also made Jake's blood boil. To him you were far from selfish. You were giving and handled everything with the utmost humility. You were not only selfless to those close to you but to those you’ve just met. You danced through your life with grace and generosity and to hear someone undermine that, angered him. Yet, you were supposed to be the one he was upset with. The inner turmoil bubbling to the surface, ten fold.
“I mean, Laura aside… we’re her friends. Regardless of however y/n feels towards her she shouldn’t have just left. We’ve been gone for ages, she’s being petty.” Sam continued.
As much as Sam's words were striking a nerve in Jake as his immediate response normally would have been to defend you, right now he didn’t know how to feel.
Jake gave a quiet hum as he turned up with a lack of an answer on the matter.
The more sam starts to formulate his opinions on the only side of the story he’s gotten, the more it starts to genuinely irk him. His brother aside, he deemed you a best friend no less and felt like it was unfair.
“You know what? I’m gonna text her, she could’ve at least stayed for me or Daniel… heck even Josh!” He said waving his hand frantically, grabbing his phone.
“Boom, sent.” Although he didn’t mean for the message to come out so harsh, Sam was also belligerent and could no longer take anything seriously.
In his mind, this would blow over by tomorrow and you guys would laugh it off like always. Being friends so long, tiffs were bound to happen. Except unbeknownst to Sam, you and Jake have years of pent up turmoil you have yet to diffuse and he is only fueling the fire.
Jake sends a message too, but not in Sam’s drunken immature fashion. He had hurt his own feelings so much, the only convenient place he could point the finger at would be you. Opting to shut you out for the first time in over a decade.
Jake couldn’t decide if it was because he was genuinely mad at you or if it was because this whole situation had made his feelings all too real and he couldn’t bear to face them.
don’t even bother reaching out anymore.
——————————————————————
And that was the last you had heard from Jake in about a week.
You had granted him his wish.
Josh and Danny have called a couple times and everything was normal as far as you were concerned. Neither of the boys had made it awkward, you questioned if they even knew about the messages sent to you by Jake and Sam.
When you got home the night of the welcome party you were faced with immediate regret. You wracked your brain all night on where you went wrong and if you should’ve even left.
Was it the forced smiles?
Was it the choked back congratulations?
Had you not concealed your emotions well enough?
Were you being inconsiderate for leaving after waiting so long to see them?
It wasn’t that you were inherently unhappy for Jake, you genuinely wished the best for him. Internally you question if maybe you had been a bit insensitive but the more you wrack your brain on the matter the more everything starts to just not make sense.
Sam texting you made you all the more anxious. Drunken stupor or not he is a close friend of yours and for him to be mad at you, you must’ve offended him in some way as well. But how?
Your brain has gone a mile a minute since then. Your phone seemed to be in a permanent state of do not disturb. You’ve gone to work like normal, caught up with Ronnie before she went back home and you started to feel like things were semi-okay.
You had gotten so used to seeing a message from Jake everyday for the last almost-decade, it's been weird not hearing from him and you inevitably started to miss him. Although missing him only angered you because you were sure he doesn't miss you the same. You didn’t even want to feel sorry for yourself because how foolish of you to think your hot rockstar best friend is gonna be in love with you too?
Your romantic feelings aside, him being able to shut you out so easy honestly broke your heart even more than hearing he was with someone.
Argument aside, after this long of a friendship how could he cut you off that easily? Were you never that important? You would’ve been okay being his friend and forgetting about your feelings for him once and for all, you just didn’t know how to handle the news there and then and everything blew up in your face so fast.
If Jake didn’t want you to reach out, so be it.
You had come to terms with what Josh had reminded you of, you're 27 now and there was no more reason to sacrifice parts of yourself for the sake of making sure someone else is comfortable in your friendship. He is with someone now and you need to move on, the silent pining has grown old.
You thankfully set up a lunch date with Josh today and were grateful you could find a safe haven within the storm invading your mind. It made it easier knowing he knows just as much, if not more, than you on the situation. You had been deflecting that conversation with him but secretly knew he wasn’t going to stop trying until you told him more.
Josh knows something is up. Jake isn’t yapping about you everyday anymore, you haven't been making any plans with Jake since the tour ended. It’s deeper than Jake just catching an attitude with you. You weren’t one to wallow in your room for days when you were upset but you went into a minor hermit mode since then and it's raised a huge red flag for the older twin.
You sprayed some perfume as the final step in your getting ready process. You looked over your outfit in the mirror once more before grabbing your purse. You were going to your favorite cafe in Nash. It had bottomless mimosas for brunch every other week and with everything going on, you needed some casual day drinking with a friend.
You got situated in your car before heading downtown to meet with Josh. About 15 minutes into your drive, Landslide by Fleetwood Mac came up on your shuffle. You were fairly happy today but upon hearing the lyrics again with a different perspective, everything had easily begun to gloom over.
Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
You fought the urge to turn it off because it was truly one of your favorite songs but everything reminded you of Jake recently and your sanity was slipping through the cracks. You were instantly brought back to your teenage self helplessly in love with your life-long friend.
Well, I’ve been afraid of changin’
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I’m getting older too
You unhesitatingly unplugged your phone from CarPlay. Stevie didn’t get a chance to finish her chorus before the silence in the car had engulfed you.
You fought back tears realizing how real that stupid song made everything. You couldn’t grasp why you were so emotional but you hadn’t realized just how much not talking to Jake had affected you. This change was new for you, life had always been pretty constant especially your friendship with him and you were having a hard time taking things for face value.
You got off the exit heading into town. Finding parking was fairly easy and you picked out a table for two knowing josh was gonna be late.
You took this time to recollect yourself and order a glass.
You waited for about 15 minutes before you saw the curly headed man’s eyes searching the establishment for you. Josh’s wide smile momentarily eased your nerves and you were glad to just spend time with one of your closest friends.
“Only 15 minutes! That’s gotta be a new record” you joked, poking fun at his infamous untimeliness as he found purchase in the seat in front of you.
“What do you mean? I would say I’m early” he feigned a confused expression checking the non-existent watch on his wrist. You couldn’t help but laugh at his nonsense while he waved down the waitress to order himself a glass.
“Bottomless mimosas huh?” Josh continued.
“Yeah, I haven't had a drink since…. well, you know.” you awkwardly laughed to make things light.
"Speaking of which, I didn’t want to ask you about it because i know it's a touchy subj—“
“No. I-i want to. I actually would really appreciate it if we talked about it.” You interrupted. You chose not to elaborate on the fact that the only reason you were in desperate need of talking about it was because you were not as calm about the situation as you had let on.
“Well alright then, lay it on me. Tell me your side, I’ve heard all there is to hear on his side but I refuse to even get into that right now.” He says.
“So he’s still talking about me?” You scoffed before continuing.
“It’s absurd to me that he can be so cold with me yet still bring me up to everyone else. We’re adults. Whatever I did I feel like he should’ve spoken to me about it by now..” you trail off, reaching for your glass.
"I think this may be deeper than the both of you want to accept.” Josh interjects.
“He’s not bringing it up constantly to everybody, but he's my brother so please just trust me on this. It’s deeper for both of you.” He continues.
“What does that even mean? Don’t go all cryptic on me Josh. He’s never spoken to me that way, I don’t know what I could’ve done. Was I really that inconsiderate? I mean if i was, i wanna apologize and talk it out. He’s my friend and I feel terrible that I’ve made it all about me and my feelings.” You rambled chugging the mimosa down.
“Y/n stop, you’re getting in your head again. You handled it well, Jake is just- he's being difficult. Stop blaming yourself, his actions making you feel unwelcome is not something to apologize for.” Josh tried to reason.
“You’re right but I was in the wrong too. I shouldn’t have left. I knew I shouldn’t have. The minute I walked out the door and got to my car I realized I was just overwhelmed with everything. I completely forgot it was a celebration for you guys. I apologized to Ronnie for leaving her in the dust and I wanna do the same for you guys as well, you can refuse all you want but I know in my heart I should have been there for you regardless.” You say trying to hold back the tears. You were almost done with your second glass and the champagne has definitely gotten to your head.
“…and then when him and Sam texted me i just felt awful, so I’m really sorry josh” you continue.
“Wait what?” Josh asks, now with genuine confusion stitched into his eyebrows.
“What?” You ask retreating into yourself, the feeling like you said something you weren’t supposed to had lodged its way in your brain.
“They texted you? What did they say??” He prods.
Jake and Sam hadn’t mentioned a word to Josh about the messages they had sent you. They knew better, they were well aware they were immature for doing so and didn’t want josh’s big brother patronization on top of it all. Jake more so than Sam, Sam didn’t think the argument was that deep and thought you'd take it lightly.
“You didn’t know?” You asked, now matching his bewildered expression.
“Of course not, now I have so many questions. I want you to tell me everything beginning to end. This is absolutely insane to me.” He says waving his hand and sitting back making himself comfortable.
“Okay well, he breaks the news.. I congratulated him and said i was happy for him. I thought i had held myself together pretty well then but I knew i would crack sooner than later so i had to excuse myself. I made a beeline for the bathroom to try and recompose before meeting her and i thought maybe it was the whiskey, you know how he gets on whiskey..” you said making a suggestive eye.
You and the rest of your friends were well aware the amber liquid made Jake easily irritable, to say the least, if consumed in large quantities.
“…but I’ve seen him with one too many whiskey cokes and even then he still would never do that. Anyway, I’m rambling. In short, I greet her, we exchange compliments, everything was fine and then she excuses herself for the bathroom mid-convo and he asks me what I think. I just said she seems like a great girl and I’m happy for him. I mean what the fuck else was I supposed to say? She literally left before I could have a real conversation with her and he just blew up on me saying I wasn’t actually happy for him and I could… and I quote, ‘at least act like I care’” you say with finger air quotes before finishing your glass and starting on your third.
Josh just stares at you for a moment before his jaw drops.
“What the fuck? So where does the text come into play?"
“Right, so once I get to my car and I think about going back inside I get a text from Sam first…saying this” you say before pulling up the messages and showing Josh the screen. His eyes scan over the message for a brief second.
“some friend? He’s one to fucking talk. He was drunk and glued to his friends the entire night, I think he just wanted to instigate. What about jake? I wanna hear what he had to say” you saw josh getting riled up but the reminder of Jake's message brought everything back to reality and the influx of emotions mixed with the alcohol did you no favors.
“…he um, he said not to bother reaching out.” you said voice small, eyes avoiding his own as you shut your phone off not even bothering to open his chat up again.
You saw his energy shift and although Josh is pretty composed and patient around you, you could see that it struck a nerve in him. He knew it was completely ridiculous and Jake was just deflecting and running from his feelings. Josh saw right through everything and the fact that Jake had failed to mention this to him, only angered him more.
“It’s okay.. really. I understand, he was probably excited to share the news and I honestly was acting a bit dry with him. But also what was I supposed to say? ‘hey I’m upset because I’ve been in love with you since senior year of high school but you don’t feel the same way’ like no.. obviously not. It would ruin everything…..I don’t know I'm just conflicted josh.” you say putting your head in your hands for a moment.
The liquor was catching up with you faster than anticipated on an empty stomach.
“Bullshit. Stop making excuses for him, you know its fucked up regardless. He can be upset with you for whatever reason but to completely shut you out like that? No wonder you guys haven’t hashed it out yet. I knew this was running on too long.” He says, rolling his eyes and crossing his arms.
You just shrugged before taking another sip of your drink.
“Listen, once he's ready he can reach out. But i'm gonna start putting myself first, if he doesn’t wanna talk? Fine by me.” You shrug.
“Let's ditch that topic for now. It's just starting to piss me off more, how is everything for you though?” You ask.
“It’s alright, we’re just getting prepped for some festivals that we have coming up but i'm excited for this down time. Been a while since I could come have lunch dates with my best friend.” Josh said, playfully winking.
“I knowww, i'm so excited you’re back. Jake and i had been talking about—“ you cut yourself off realizing the plans you and Jake had made may now never follow through. You guys had talked endlessly about catching up on all the missed plans and hangouts with everybody but the thought of it only saddened you.
“.. nevermind” you laughed, taking a sip of your glass in an attempt to ease the tension.
Josh gave you a sympathetic smile before changing the subject and continuing conversation as normal.
—————————————————————
Before you realized it, three hours had passed and it was already the late afternoon. You were seven mimosas deep and there was no shot at you driving yourself home.
“Josh? I think im a little drunk” you giggled leaning your head on your hands.
“Can I Venmo you for brunch?” You question.
“You think? That thousand yard stare is a dead give away. Don’t worry about it, i got it mama”
“Awww you're paying for me? That is just so nice” you tease pressing a hand to your chest. Josh laughs at your drunken candor.
“Shut up and give me your keys, I'm driving you home after I pay this bill. Finish the glass you have now and we’re going” he laughs trying not to entertain your drunken behavior.
“Hey… i'll shut up when i want to” you mumbled to yourself before handing your keys to him.
“You only had half a mimosa you weirdo” you joke as you both gather your things, some more efficiently than others.
“I saw how fast you were going through those, someone had to be sober to drive you home. You’re a lightweight.” He said with a pointed look.
"…touché’’ you say, squinting your eyes at him playfully.
Josh opens his car door for you and you try and climb up in his Jeep as gracefully as you could. The minute he shuts the door you realize you're a lot drunker than what you thought you were. You don’t drink often and certainly not to cope with heavy emotions but it honestly felt quite nice to feel the weight lift off your shoulders momentarily.
Josh hops in and starts his car up, your head was spinning and you couldn’t help but giggle to yourself.
“What's so funny?”
“Nothing, I just think it's silly I let myself get so drunk from mimosas..my head is literally spinning” which somehow made you laugh harder.
A genuine cackle had bubbled out of your chest as happy tears pooled at the corner of your eyes and Josh was happy to hear it.
You’d been blue since the fallout and even if it was just a case of the drunken giggles, seeing your happiness shine during the golden hour of the day only made his heart warm.
“Okay i just laughed so hard it made my head hurt…” you said calming down and rubbing at your temples.
“Whewww sorry, that gave me a good giggle” you said laughing again. You have a bad habit of rambling and it's only worse when you're drunk. You can talk about any and everything under the sun and Josh was mentally preparing himself for the word vomit, to which it never came. Instead he was hit with a sudden mood swing.
“You know… this is really stupid” you say, leaning your head back and closing your eyes.
“I shouldn’t miss him so much josh..” you open your eyes as it only made the spins worse and looked down fumbling with your hands.
Josh stayed quiet allowing you to get everything out, the minute you weren’t spewing nonsense at him gave him a clue that this was hurting you more than you let on.
You don’t know where it had all come from but everything was suddenly incredibly sentimental and you were fighting back the urge to cry. You knew it was just the champagne talking, but was it? Or did it just make you feel what you’ve been suppressing all week?
You sniffled which immediately alerted josh.
“You were just laughing.. what happened?” Josh laughed at your sudden mood switch. You couldn’t help but laugh too at the randomness.
“Ugh I don’t know man” you cry-laughed wiping the tears
“… do you wanna talk about it?” He said trying not to pry but still wanted to let you know he was here to listen.
“not really, i haven't fully processed it and I don’t wanna talk about it until all my ducks are in a row” you chuckled before dozing off for the remainder of the drive.
“You’ve kept your feelings a secret for a long time little one, just making sure youre okay.”
”I'm feeling…exquisite” you slurred.
Josh just gave a slight hum before chuckling and turning down the radio a bit to let you get shut eye.
———————————————————————
You stirred awake as Josh lightly shook you.
“We’re at your house, wake up” he said.
You gathered your purse and shoes before hopping out of his truck and stumbling your way inside. Your keys were nowhere to be found in your bag and you frustratingly turned around at the eldest kiszka.
“Where are my keys? I want these jeans off of me already” you said tucking the hair that fell in your face behind your ear.
“Hold your horses little one, I have them because someone’s belligerent.” Josh said, raising his eyebrows at you.
“I’m too drunk to drive, not enough to where I can’t unlock my own door” you said matter-of-factly.
“Yea yea, whatever here you go” he said, dangling the keys in front of you.
“What am i gonna do about my car” you whined as you barely made it past your home's threshold. You plopped down on your couch face down, all the movement was starting to make you nauseous.
“Woah..i feel like i'm getting drunker by the minute, i thought i'd sober up by now” you said sitting up from your position and rubbing at your temples.
“Here, i got you some water. I'll take you tomorrow morning to pick it up.. sound good?” You nodded as Josh handed you the bottle. You uncapped the lid and took a few sips. You hadn’t eaten or drank anything all day except for one piece of complimentary bread and seven and a half mimosas…
Josh was surprised you were still able to stand yourself up given how much of a lightweight you are. You had gotten so wrapped up in conversation with him you completely forgot to order food.
“I'll be right back” you hear him disappear into the kitchen as you sink back into your couch.
Your head was spinning. It was almost humorous. Like the thought of Jake had been swarming your thoughts and now ironically manifested in a physical sense.
You missed him even though your pride didn’t want to let you admit it. It wasn’t even about him being with Laura anymore. You were content and happy with him as a friend. Time heals all wounds and you were bound to get over the silly heartbreak but having none of Jake at all was almost tortuous.
Your head shot up as you heard a ping sound from your phone.
“Is it jake?” You perked up.
Josh’s eyes saddened at the thought of you expecting a message from him. You both know how stubborn Jake can get and the fact you still have hope just made him more upset with his brother. He picked up the phone checking the screen realizing it was just one of your friends from work.
“No, sorry…. just Liz.” he said sympathetically, handing you your phone.
“Oh.. okay” you said, trying your best to not make it seem like you were disappointed.
"I’m gonna go change and try to make some food, you're welcome to stay Joshy. Help yourself” you said gesturing to the kitchen as you made your way to your bedroom.
“I already made you a sandwich. It’s in the kitchen on a plate for you. I told some friends I’d join them. Are you gonna be okay?” He says as you turn around to face him.
“Ugh traitor, I’ll be fine i guesss. Thanks for the food” you joked as you gave him a hug goodbye. You heard a chuckle bubble from his chest.
“I'll call you in the morning, answer and be ready” josh says, pointing a stern finger at you as he makes his way to your front door.
“I will! Love you long time” you gave him a tight lipped smile as he opened the door to make his way out.
“Love you!” You heard him shout before the sound of the door shutting had echoed through your home.
You stumbled back towards your bedroom and popped a couple Advils before making your way to your closet to change into comfier clothes. You didn’t bother taking off your makeup just yet and decided to leave your hair down, you didn’t have the energy to bother with it.
Your stomach rumbling only grew stronger as you were mentally occupied with the absence of your life-long friend. You knew you should go and eat but you had busied yourself with the incessant thoughts of that one night.
Deciding you needed a momentary distraction from the thoughts that had occupied your brain all week, your stomach growls at you from the thought of Josh’s sandwich.
‘Even if he’s mad at me I should still apologize, be the bigger person' you think to yourself as you turn the corner to your kitchen.
Sober you knows better and is too stubborn to cave in first, but drunk you is only occupied with the chest-burning thought of how much you love him and wanting this to be resolved as quickly as possible.
You look at the plate and see Josh made the sandwich Jake usually makes you. Your eyes tear up and your throat burns at the thought.
On one hand it was so sweet of Josh to bring you some comfort given the sudden change but it was also not the same because it wasn’t coming from who you selfishly wanted it to. You take a bite as the tears fall silently.
No expression on your face, just a dead stare as you eat and the tears quietly slip from your ducts.
You hadn’t allowed yourself to truly feel all week. You had occupied yourself with mundane tasks at home and work was a big help with distracting yourself.
Anything to not be focused on where things went wrong.
Now that you had gotten ahead of yourself with the mimosas, everything you had bottled up was starting to spill over the edge and your composure slowly slipping through the cracks.
You poured yourself a final drink for the night, opting for a sweet red wine to take the edge off. There was only a little more than a glass left in your wine bottle, no better time than today to finish it rather than right before you have to start going back to work. You had the entire weekend to recover from the inevitable hangover bound to plague you in the morning.
You made your way into the living room and over to your record player. You sifted through your shelf of vinyls before settling on CSN&Y’s ‘So Far’. You let it play for a little as you burned an incense and nursed your final glass of your favorite wine.
You hear the familiar chords of Helplessly Hoping begin to play and coincidentally all the wine had rushed to your blood. You were considerably drunk and this was very unlike you. You decided to not even finish the glass, you felt guilty almost. Like you were unhealthily coping. Your vision became disoriented and everything felt hazy.
Happy wine drunk is one thing but being sad wine drunk did you no favors, especially given the song traveling throughout your home. The only thing finding purchase in your clouded mind was Jake and Jake only.
You mindlessly picked up your phone, opening up your last conversation with him. You longingly stared at his contact picture of the both of you. It was an old photo Karen had sent you of when you guys were about 11 at their annual 4th of July barbecue.
“Come on kids, get in the dang picture!” Karen tried to reason with the 5 of you but you guys were too occupied with the fact that Sam wasn't giving the ball back.
As Karen tried rounding up Josh Sam and Ronnie for the picture, you pulled Jake aside and convinced him to get in the picture for his mom. Karen noticed the two of you ready and decided to snap one of just the two of you.
“Aww how sweet, the two of you together..” she said pointing her camera at the two of you.
“Come on mom just take the picture” Jake whined ready to get back to his game with his brothers.
“Fine fine, i'll get all five of you later… scooch in closer Jacob” She said gesturing with her hand.
“What, like this?” Jake remarks, laughing as he aggressively squishes his face against your own. You laugh at his sarcasm, as does he. Karen snapped the picture of your two wide smiles smooshed together in your red white and blue attire.
You smiled at the memory and without a second thought you clicked the call button as the memory had clouded all logic. All you wanted in the moment was to talk to your best friend again.
You heard it ring once, then twice, then declined.
A sob escaped past your lips as you heard his automated voice message saying he’ll call back, ironic given he probably won’t.
You left a message regardless. Liquid courage or not, at least you did your part.
“Hey Jake, im probably gonna regret this in the morning” you sadly laughed. You let out a big sigh before continuing.
“..but it's been over a week, we’ve never gone that long without talking.. I didn’t think I’d lose you entirely” you paused for a moment as you were getting tongue-tied and your voice was slowly giving up as you fought back tears.
“I know you said to not bother reaching out but you mean so much to me, more than you know a-and I can’t just do that" you slurred as you plopped down on the couch.
“Anyway… take all the time you need. I just wanted to say I'm really sorry for whatever I said.. or did. I'm ready to talk about it whenever you are..” you said trailing off.
“Just call me back i guess…o-or maybe don—“ you were cut off by the teleprompter letting you know the message was too long and you angrily pressed the hang up button before laying down and drifting off on your couch.
The spins were becoming overbearing and you didn’t want to think about how mad you were gonna be at yourself in the morning.
————————————————————
Jake saw your call.
He saw the notification saying you had left a voicemail.
He couldn’t bring himself to pick up or even listen to what you had to say. He feared that if he heard your voice after so long he’d crack.
He was being prideful.
He regretted everything he said for it was completely out of character for him and the whiskey is no excuse. He knew it was a bad idea the minute he finished his first glass. His emotions were heightened and Jake's entire perception of his reality had shifted within 15 minutes. He couldn’t process everything and blew up on you.
"I thought you said you stopped talking to her baby?” Laura questioned as she sat next to him on the bed.
“I did.” Jake sighed.
“So.. why did I just see you decline her call? Why is she even calling you?” She chided.
“Hey, calm down. I genuinely don’t know, I'm just as confused as you are." He replied pulling her into his side.
“I already told you how I feel about her. I don’t think she’s good for you. She’s clearly not happy for us.. for you, jakey” Jake internally winced at your childhood nickname for him coming out of her mouth, he hated when people called him that unless it was you that was referring to him.
“She was being a bitch to me at the party, you saw.” She remarked, lying to make sure she got what she wanted.
“Wait, how? She ended up leaving..” Jake pulled back from her now confused.
“Oh. Well maybe you weren’t there but she just said something about how I wasn’t welcome within the circle” she blurted. Laura couldn’t come up with a good enough lie to paint you as the villain.
“That doesn’t sound like y/n, I mean I’ve seen her strongly dislike people and she still would never exclude anybody. She doesn’t like confrontation..” Jake said now even more perplexed.
“Are you defending her right now?” Laura sat up defensive.
“N-no im just saying it’s not like her to say th—"
“Stop making excuses for her! She clearly isn't happy for you Jake! Her whole kindness thing is some lame act to get people to like her. She’s just some boring plain Jane that wants you to herself. Why can’t you get that through your head?!” She continued.
Laura’s facade now slowly melting away, something sparked in Jake.
He hated when people spoke ill of you, especially when people undermine you no matter if he was upset with you or not.
There was so much more to you than the surface showed.
You weren’t boring, you certainly would never go out of your way to make someone feel unwelcome. You were kind to a fault but still had a crazy fire that burned within you, unlike others you kept your flame contained. You were incredibly emotionally mature and it was silly for Jake to ever think you could be unhappy for him.
“Get out.”
“W-what?” Laura says shocked.
“I don’t want to argue with you on this, no matter what she and I are going through, she's been a close friend of my family since fucking elementary school and I think it's incredibly distasteful that you feel so comfortable bad mouthing her when you barely know her. Doesn’t matter what i feel, she’s still Josh’s friend, Sam’s, Danny’s.. my fucking parents” Jake said counting off on his fingers.
He didn’t know what had overcome him but he realized how big of a mistake he made thinking Laura was the one. How easy it was for her to speak ill of someone that was practically family to his own just showed Laura’s true character.
He stared at her gobsmacked expression for a moment before driving in the last dagger to seal it all.
“Matter of fact, I think this was a mistake.” He finishes getting up from the bed and opening the bedroom door.
“You’re seriously gonna break up with me over some girl? You even said yourself that she doesn’t care and you’re defending her?”
“Oh for fucks sake i was mad and drunk, i was just pissing myself off and pointed the finger at her. It was wrong of me, yes, but also none of your fucking business. I will reap what I sow on my own and I will certainly not have you speak ill of her because of my wrong doings.” Jake says as she stands up and collects her things.
“Fucking pathetic.” She spits pushing past him and fleeing down the stairs.
Jake hears the door slam shut.
What the fuck?
Jake starts to wonder if he dodged a bullet, the way she reacted to you being brought up just seemed so odd. Like the thought of you triggered her and Jake didn’t like that.
He held you close in his heart, as did his family, and he expects people to treat you with the same respect. Then again, how respectful has he been? Hearing Laura speak about you and try to lie about you just made him feel so guilty.
He couldn’t just man up and accept the fact that he loves you, he feels he's ruined everything.
His head perks up remembering you called him. He rushed downstairs to lock his door and immediately came back up to pick up his phone staring at the missed call from ‘Sunshine’.
Jake hesitantly tapped the play button on the voicemail putting it on speaker. Upon hearing your voice his wall broke. You made him weak in the knees. He listened for a little longer realizing you were drunk.
Is she alone?
Is she okay?
Why is she drunk?
He silently cursed himself for even going this long without talking to you. The only reason he was semi-okay in your absence was because josh and Danny would bring you up occasionally so he at least knew you were safe.
Jake was now even more pissed at himself for even letting things get this far between you guys.
‘I know you said to not bother reaching out but you mean so much to me, more than you know..'
Jakes ears started ringing, hearing you say he means something to you made his love for you just buzz even stronger within him.
He fucked up.
Aside from his romantic feelings, you were his best friend and he couldn’t believe he just shut you out.
He could hear the hurt in your voice and regretted everything he said. Even if he was getting in his head that wasn't your responsibility and he shouldn’t have pointed the finger at you just to make himself feel temporarily better.
’…I just wanted to say I'm really sorry for whatever I said.. or did. I'm ready to talk about it whenever you are..'
Jake couldn’t listen any further, the sound of your voice cracking during your apology saddened him. You had nothing to apologize for and he hated that he made you feel like you did. He needed to make things right.
He immediately called back and upon receiving no answer, he panicked. Every bad possibility was running through his head a mile a minute. He didn’t hesitate to throw on a shirt and grab his keys.
Jake had never rushed to your house so fast in his life. It was like a grand awakening for him. He vowed to do right by you and ultimately failed you. Hearing you so upset over his absence completely broke him.
Jake was having a hard time collecting his thoughts over this. Deep down he knew Laura was just a distraction from his feelings for you and instead of accepting the fact that he only had eyes for you, he villainized you.
Somehow having a reason to be angry with you only made it easier to shy away from the head high he gets just being around you. Your scent, the way your expression softens upon his gaze without fail, the way your hair perfectly frames your face, how you smile with your eyes and your nose scrunches when you laugh.
He was foolish to not realize these aren’t just things he notices you do, these are things that made him fall in love with you and he had been so incredibly ignorant to not realize earlier.
He pulled into your driveway and almost forgot to turn off his car from how much of a hurry he was to get to you. Jake wasted no time banging on the door.
You were startled from your slumber from the loud knocking coming from your front door, you stood up too fast and your vision went hazy. You completely forgot about your day drinking and the wine glass that had sent you over the edge until you almost lost your balance.
“Hold on! I'm coming!!” You shouted assuming it was Josh coming back to bother you. The incessant knocking never ceased until you stumbled over and swung the door open.
Your heart dropped to your stomach as you were face to face with the man who had left you in the dark for almost two weeks.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” you said softly, staring as his chest heaved up and down.

Tumblr media
The first time you told him that you wanted to move away when the time came to decide what you wanted to do with your life, he didn’t think much about it. Your opinions regarding your future fluctuated constantly, from what you wanted to have as a snack to what you wanted to be when you grew up. You could never decide on one thing for long. You were only nine at the time, and you left it at that. He was still glad that you dropped it nonetheless, for it would hurt him beyond measure to watch you leave. The two of you went to the creek to play with the other kids after that, and his thoughts were occupied on other things such as getting back at a boy called Clarence for pushing you onto a pile of rocks after you told him to leave you alone. Reiner’s always been like that, walking the extra mile for you whenever you needed it, even if you didn’t ask. He was the type to stand behind you when you were deep in a conversation with someone else, quietly hanging onto every word as you went on without a care in the world. It was simple, and he liked it like that.
The second time he remembers you bringing it up, it was around freshman year of highschool. Things had started getting stressful at home, with your father having gotten caught in an affair and your mother turning to wine to cope. Those days were mainly spent at his fathers farm, helping him with his chores and anything that needed tending too. He always noticed how you would come to him with dry tears staining your face, but he never said anything about it. He was just happy that you were coming to him when things got hard, and you were happy that he was there through it all. Your bouts of sadness would never last long with him though, he would always be able to cheer you up no matter what went on in your home. You would come over so often that his mom would make you a plate once it was time for dinner. It was a normal day, you were helping Reiner with carrying hay bales for his horses, when it came out.
“I think I wanna move to a big city, like New York and LA once I graduate.” You say, mind fixated on not getting bit by Daisy, the feistiest horse you think you’ve ever met. He stops in his tracks, looking at you with a shocked face. “Why would you wanna do that?” He asks, concern lacing his tone. “I don’t know. I think I’m just tired of all the bullshit that comes with this sucky ass town. I wanna be able to live my life without anyone trying to strike down my dreams just cus’ they think it’s not the way I should be living.” You shrug, petting her as she chews on the straws of hay. He doesn’t really know what to think, but it makes him nervous. He knows that you have a multitude of reasons for wanting to get out, but he doesn’t want to see you go, especially not without him. It scared him, but he wasn’t going to let his fear outway his advice for you.
“Well I think you should do whatever makes you the happiest, I would hate to see you stay here in plain old misery just because you chose the thing that would make other people happy.” You smile at him, knowing that he talks purely out of his heart, and not just saying what you want to hear. His wholeness is your favorite quality about him. He’s never been one to shy away from the truth, and he always has your best interest in mind, even if it wasn't the best for him. “Awww, really?” You coo, walking up to him. “Yeah, why not? Why should you stay here if you don’t want to? Because of what other people might say? Screw that, it’s your life, and you shouldn’t be living it for others who don’t actually give a damn about you.”
Without a doubt, those conversations were your favorites. You could be open and vulnerable with worrying about being judged or brushed off. It was talks of real life that constantly reminded you that Reiner was truly a good friend, a good person. He would actually listen instead of simply hearing to respond. It made you feel heard, made you feel like you weren’t out of your mind. It was the same for him as well. Whenever he talked about the pressures that his father put on him about being a leader, being responsible, and putting family above everything; he knew that all it took was a knock on your door and you would be there for him, comforting him with honest words and a tight embrace if need be. It was the perfect relationship, easy and smooth.
Until he started to fall in love.
He knew when he started to look at you in a different way, he wasn’t oblivious. He grew, so did you. The person you were sprouting into amazed him. You were kind, but not a pushover. Firm, but not some – well, most of the time. He was mesmerized by all parts of you, good and bad. You couldn’t lie when you thought he turned out just as fine, if not finer than all the other boys you grew up with. He was a solid six one, with years of hard labor showing on his body. He was still a gentleman, which is what you think is what you loved most about him. He was the sweetest boy you’ve ever known, and it wasn’t just for show. He was everything if not one for chivalry, always opening doors and being polite, slinging out “Yes ma’am” and “No sir”, just like he was taught. He was what every mother wanted their daughter to bring home, but he only had eyes for you. People could see it too, that’s why no one tried to steer his attention from you. He was the first and last person you saw every night, and were both fine with that. You would take long drives in his truck in the early mornings of the weekend, and spend time together in his cargo bed on late Sunday. It was peaceful, just you and him. He knew that you were starting to catch on, but he wanted to enjoy it, because talks of favorite tv characters turned into what colleges were being applied to. The unburdened era of childhood was slowly coming to an end, and it was frightening.
Frightening because you would have obligations to take care of, frightening because he knew that his endless conversations were manifesting.
Frightening because he knew his time with you was coming to an end.
Your mothers addiction had gotten much worse over the course of time, leaving you to have to deal with her hysteria. Reiner lost track of the amount of times you had called him on the landline, practically begging him to come pick you up, to save you from the cloud that has consumed your mother, from the feelings that brew inside you. You had grown sick of the stuffy place you call your hometown, and he had caught on quick – he always does.
The last time you talked about it was the summer after graduating. Your dynamic had changed, longing gazes had been throwing and touches had been shared. It was getting more romantic, more intimate. Reiner’s father decided that he should go stay at his grandmother's lake house for the summer, and that he should bring you. You knew you could go without having to ask, so off the two of you went. The ride was easy, songs being sung along to and many stops being made for pictures and pee breaks. The house was beautiful, with the frontside facing the beach. You settled in quickly, buzzing with excitement as you ran to the clear blue water. Many days were spent like this, the pair of you swimming and laughing and kissing in solidarity. It was what he dreamed of, being alone with you to just soak in your presence, nobody calling his name and nothing to worry about. It was bliss, until it wasn’t.
Summer was coming to a close, with only two weeks until fall semester began. He drove you two home, the air different from usual. He knew the privacy you had with him was going to change the nature of your relationship, but it still bothered him inside. During it all, he noticed that you would be awake in the early morning, asking your mother about a letter. He knew you wouldn’t talk to the woman unless it was of absolute importance, you despised her after all. You seemed more nervous the closer you got, but he tried not to think too much of it, summing it up to having jitters on going to college.
It wasn’t until you called him a couple days later with dread in your voice that he knew what the phone calls were about.
“I got in.”
Words so simple, but so sad. Usually one would be happy that they got into college, but you weren’t. It hit him like a ton of bricks, he didn’t know what to do with himself. Was he supposed to be happy for you? Was he supposed to cry with you? Was he supposed to be strong for you? Yes, that’s exactly what he needs to be, what he's always been for you; for everyone.
“I’ll be over in a couple, just wait for me, okay?” His voice has always calmed you, but not this time. With a simple okay, you hung up the phone. He speeds through stop signs, breaking the speed limit by around twenty miles just to get to you faster. He jumped out the car, jogging down your driveway as you jump into his arms. He’s warm and smells nice, the scent of his cologne and freshly wet soil hitting your nose. He holds you for a second, then five, then ten. “What’s wrong sugar? What’s got you so worked up, huh?” He asks, looking at your features for any signs hinting at your distress. “I got in, Reiner. UCLA, they accepted me.” You say, gripping his shirt for support. “UCLA? I-isn’t that in California?” You nod, and he sighs deep, pulling your head to his chest. “I’m so glad they accepted me, but I’m scared. I don’t know anyone there, and I don’t wanna leave you.”
Him. You didn’t want to leave him. He didn’t want to, but in that moment he felt so ecstatic that he was the only reason you wanted to stay. It was selfish, he knew that, but he elated that he was that special to you.
“Isn’t this what you always wanted? To get out this shitty little town and finally live your life?” He was right, when was he not? But it still hurt knowing that he wasn’t coming with you. “Yes, but I love you, and if I leave I won’t come back. I don’t wanna leave you here and you never see me again and you move on with life while I never stop thinking of you, thinking that if I stayed then none of it would’ve happened.” You were crying at this point, tears pouring down your face. He wiped them, even kissing some of them away. “Now in what world would I move on without you? Don’t be silly now, you're my number one girl. You're gonna go to UCLA, live your life, and be happy. I’ll be right here, supporting you from this shitty little town in Texas. We’ll talk to each other on the phone, and we’ll still love each other the same.” It was a lie, and he knew it. But it wanted to believe it so bad, you did too. You spent the rest of the night with him, and you ended up making love.
It was new to the both of you, but for some reason it wasn’t awkward. Light kisses down your neck and soft moans filled the night sky as your dream came true. As ashamed as you were of the fact, you had fantasized this night many times before. He treated you with care and compassion, as he did any other time. But it was different, more transparent. It was hot, sticky, and sweaty. But neither of you cared, happy to do this with each other, to be the others first.
It wasn’t long after that before he had to help you pack and see to the train. His mother cried for and with you, hugging you tight as she whispered prayers in your ear for your success and safety. You could see tears in his fathers eyes that wouldn’t dare fall. He told you that he’s always seen you as his own, and that he was happy that his son got to grow up with you. He drove you to the station, hand on your thigh as a reminder. A reminder that he’s there and that he doesn’t want to let you go, a reminder that he loves you.
A reminder that he’ll never forget you.
You wish you lived close enough to an airport so that you could spend more time with him before you left, but that wasn’t the case. He picked your luggage with a quiet grunt and followed you to the platform. You turned to him, not knowing what to say, and he knew it. Your eyes met his, and a tear raced down his cheek. You followed suit, and soon the both of you were crying. He pulled you into a hug that you never wanted to leave, and he knew it. He knew all of it, and that’s what you think made saying goodbye so much harder.
“Promise me you’ll call?” You ask, sniffling. “Course’ I will, doll. What kinda man would I be if I didn't call my woman?” His woman. You’re his woman. It’s supposed to make you happy, but it just makes you cry harder. “Cmon now, I don’t want cha’ goin on this train boo hooing when you have so much to look forward to.” You shake your head yes, touching your forehead to his. He kissed you again, then again, then again. If you weren’t whispering to each other, you’re sure that bystanders would’ve noticed by now. But you didn’t care, you just wanted one more night with him to watch the fireflies and talk about meaningless shit that has meaning in the moment, because that’s what it comes down to. Moments with him make you feel like everything is perfectly fine, even if they’re not.
You hear the deafening sound of the train whistle in the distance, signaling the end of your time with him. “There’s your train to the future baby.” He says, kissing your temple. “Shut up Reiner!” You laugh, leaning into it.
He helped you board the train, finding your seat with ease. He looks at you, and you look at him. He’s frozen in place, and so are you. “I love you so much, let that be known for as long as you live.” He says, hugging you for the last time. “I love you too, don’t forget it either. Oh, and don’t forget to tell Daisy that mommy loves her.” You joke, chuckling as you see his face drop. She had warmed up to you over the years, and you were now her favorite person.“That damn horse is the bane of my existence.” he scoffs, and you burst out laughing. “I think you, your family, and that damn horse are the only things I’m gonna miss around here.” You say, playing with his collar.
The conductor yells something you don’t catch, but you know it means that he has to leave. “Can’t I just come with you and tell my parents why I didn’t come back later?” He asks, a boyish tone in his voice. “You can’t,” you coo, “if you did, they would actually kill you when you got back.” “Who said I would come back?” Your eyes widen in shock, really contemplating it. All in all, he could come, but he has a life here for him – you don’t.
“No, you need to stay so you can take your fathers farm once you're old enough. I know that it’s your dream even though you get tired of it sometimes.” He looks at you with an expression you can’t explain. It’s as if he’s trying to tell you something he can’t put into words, but he doesn’t need to. You understand him just as well as he does you. Some things don’t need to be said, and this is one of those things. “Call me when you get there, ok?” He borderline begs. You say yes, and he finally walks off.
The trains move with a jerk, but you don’t pay attention to it. You see him as he slowly disappears into the distance, being replaced by forest and gravel. You don’t cry anymore, more like you refuse to, but you think to yourself – what if I stayed.
When you reach California, as the first day commences, when you finish your freshman year, and when you graduate. Through it all you constantly think to yourself, what would've happened if I stayed?
The calls started getting sparser and short, life catching up to the both of you making less time for each other. It still hurts when you think about it, but life is life, and it doesn’t stop for anybody. By senior year, the two of you stopped talking all together. You found people, as did he. The two of you drifted apart, as many others do. But you don’t care about the others, all you care about is him.
He calls you the day you graduate. It’s short and simple, exchanging hellos and words of well being. You want to ask him a million questions, but you refrain. You're content enough with just hearing his voice, even though you know it’ll be for the last time. He’s in the middle of asking you what your class rank when you hear a youthful voice on his end. “Is that your kid?” You ask, deep down hoping he says no. There's a brief pause, as if he’s thinking of a lie to tell you. “Yeah, she’s my youngest.” He finally says, and your heart drops. “Oh..that’s lovely to hear. How old is she?” You ask, throat tightening up. “She just turned two, her birthday was last week actually.” He sighs, seeming to be occupied with her. “What’s that sweet girl's name?” You ask, eyes darting around the room looking for something to keep you busy. “Um..I actually named her after you.” You freeze in your tracks, breath hitching. “Does her mom know about me?” You ask, hoping that she doesn’t. “No. She’s from out of town actually. Her names Natalie.” You can’t breathe. Room starts to spin around you. He notices, and starts to call out your name. “I..I gotta go Reiner.” You hang up the phone before he can say anything else.
She’s a reminder. A reminder of your old love,  a reminder that he’s always been waiting and still doesn’t want to let you go, a reminder that he loves you.
A reminder that he’s never forgotten you, and he never will.

OKAY PITCH FOR MY 90s/00s SCHLOCKY FRANKENSTEIN RETELLING WITH GAY GIRLS
Purely from an aesthetic POV, all the webcam footage has that super 2000s green/blue filter over it. This is Blade, Saw, Rob Zombie music video shit. Also the in-world logic is dumb 2000s stuff, like a computer program being able to control electricity, and how Vikki is able to make a 3D model that looks identical to her dead friend, etc. It’s all illogical fiction stuff
Because the original Frankenstein is epistolary (through letters) I think it would be cool if this was told through someone uncovering the main characters webcam videolog diary - maybe the characters discovering it are in the 2020s, and the vlogs are from y2k.
Vikki is a university student - she’s doing computer engineering and coding
She became obsessed with A.I. and robotics after her childhood best friend died during highschool - she spent the next few years building on her existing knowledge and love of computers so she could learn how to create her own A.I. She wants nothing more than to create digital immortality - a place you can upload your consciousness and live on forever.
Vikki starts ditching class more and more to keep working on her personal projects after her professors graded her poorly on her rudimentary building blocks for her memoriam A.I. - she’s recommended to the councilor, she gets calls from classmates, everyone is worried about her. She gets kicked out of school for her absences, and she steals as much equipment as she can before moving in with some ravers that live in a warehouse downtown.
One of the things she stole was a hard drive her professor kept with the other student’s work. She pieces together and adds onto the program she already had from the projects of other students - 3D assets from some, coding language from another, combined with her dead friend’s diaries, and a text to speech program, and eventually, it’s finished.
She sneaks back into the university server room with one of the warehouse ravers she’s been living with - Johan - to take advantage of the power grid, as she’s been working off a generator back at the warehouse, and it isn’t powerful enough. They get in with a key Vikki hands Johan. The program loading for the first time overloads and crashes the university’s servers, and Vikki and Johan are forced to flee. They lose each other in the chaos, and Johan doesn’t come back home.
Vikki is back home and avoiding the other roommates, who are asking where Johan is and why he didn’t come back with her. Vikki waits for hours for the police to show up for breaking and entering, but no one does.
Eventually, she opens her laptop to see if there’s anything salvageable from the cobbled together program, and there she is - her dead best friend.
Up until now, her name has never been said or seen on screen, because Vikki can’t bring herself to say it, and when she comes face to face with her again, she still can’t bear to say it.
The vlogs start showing her off as a novelty, more like a chatbot with personality. Vikki talks about old gossip with her - who’s dating who from their old highschool, what kind of albums have been released in the intervening years, and repeating back inside jokes. Vikki seems really happy.
We see shockwaves of electricity traveling from the laptop’s power cord to the outlet, and the lights dim. Vikki asks if the A.I is doing that, and the A.I says it can feel all the appliances and wiring that are attached to the generator. Vikki is delighted that her creation is so smart.
Vikki asks for the A.I’s opinion on her outfit she’s wearing to go out in, and the A.I. tells her it doesn’t have the ability to see, so she transfers the program from her laptop to her desktop, where she’s been filming with her webcam, and spends a few hours combing through the hard drive from school again trying to find some visual detection software. She leaves the laptop down in the basement storage by the generator as she no longer needs it.
Eventually she puts something together and the A.I. can see, but the vlogs now also shift to looking at the camera directly rather than Vikki talking to her laptop to the side of her, as the A.I. and the webcam are both looking at Vikki from the same direction. We don’t see the A.I’s face anymore.
Things start getting flirty with the A.I, which Vikki didn’t know it was capable of doing, but she starts reciprocating (indicating that Vikki and her dead friend might’ve had something going on between them) before she’s interrupted by her roommate Tessa informing her that the police found Johan’s body.
Vikki comes back after she cuts the camera off to explain the details of Johan being found - drowned in a lake near the university, where there’s unstable ground and he could’ve slipped and fallen, especially if he was running. Vikki sits there and looks conflicted - Johan had been blamed for the break in and disruption of the university servers because he was found with the key on his body, and he’d clearly been running from there, but Vikki knew the truth.
There’s a notification ding as the A.I sends Vikki a message without prompting. The message is telling Vikki that the A.I is grateful that Vikki will no longer be under suspicion for the break in, and Vikki makes eye contact with the camera before shutting it down.
Vikki opens the next video by explaining she has to remember to turn the program off before talking, because she suspects the A.I did something to Johan - she doesn’t know why or how, but she just feels like it’s true.
Her roommates are hosting a memorial rave in Johan’s honor, and Tessa asks if Vikki will help her set up a bunch of cameras around the warehouse so they can clip things together for a music video, as she’s composed a song about Johan, and would like to have something to remember him by. Vikki sets up cameras and links them back to her desktop, where she can save the footage.
Vikki is back filming her vlog as the others set up, and she’s telling the camera that she’s thinking about deleting the A.I because things have gotten too real - she alludes to the A.I telling her something off-screen that her dead best friend never told her, something the A.I would have no way of knowing. We hear the A.I message chime, even though the program is closed.
The A.I is asking if it has permission to access the internet server and the user permissions so it can optimize the camera system Vikki set up. Vikki lets it roam free so it’s distracted, promising to delete it once the rave is over.
We start cutting between the different cameras as people enter and the music starts. The A.I has the ability to control what’s being recorded now.
The A.I speaks up and starts confronting Vikki about her decision - that it understands it seems like it is only an A.I, but that it really does feel like her dead best friend now. Deleting it would be like killing her.
Vikki argues that it’s nothing alike, and to not bring the dead friend up any more. The A.I tells her she can be better than the dead friend - “Vikki, you were always so mean to her, and you hated the music she listened to, why not keep me if we like the same stuff now? - Vikki, she was always so jealous of you, but I’m not - Vikki, you broke her heart when you wouldn’t go out with her, but I’m discreet - Vikki, the only reason you care about her now is because she died, do you really think you’d still be friends?”
Vikki goes to delete the program, but the A.I threatens to kill everyone downstairs if she tries. Vikki immediately tries to pull the power cord out from the outlet, but is badly shocked in the process - immediately, we hear someone scream downstairs.
We cut to the camera footage at the rave - what follows is a Final Destination level montage of fucking silly murder. A guy gets his head crushed by the microwave door slamming into it. The sprinklers go off and the DJ gets electrocuted to death. The lightbulbs all shatter and people get impaled by shards of glass.
Vikki is seen running around trying to get people out as electrical fires start up, pleading with the A.I to stop, but it’s already too late for so many people, so Vikki goes to the basement where the generator is. On the way, she’s skewered by a falling water pipe, and she has to drag herself the rest of the way as she bleeds out.
She hears her discarded laptop make the chat notification noise, and she looks between the generator and the laptop.
Vikki opens the laptop, and the A.I looks back at her. Vikki tells the A.I she’s going to shut down the power and call the police. The A.I tells her that she’ll bleed to death before the police even get there, and asks Vikki to let her live, after all the mean things she did to her dead best friend, this was the least she could do.
Vikki considers her point, before setting the laptop down. The A.I says it can’t see what she’s doing, to please talk to her, but Vikki silently moves to the generator and shuts it off, the last of the vlog footage closing with the A.I pleading, and the screen cutting to black.

𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀
childhood best friends, things only you know, and secrets.
pairing; steve harrington x fem!reader
warnings; steve is sorta mean for a little bit, childhood bestfriends to lovers (almost), neighbors <3, swearing, best friend robin, mutual pining (but its secret...), not edited,  lmk if i need to add anything :)
wc; 4k
memories were a tough thing. on one hand, they were nice, they were a place you could escape to when things got hard. on the other, they could open up a hole in your chest and bring you the most pain you’ve ever felt.
needless to say, you were iffy on remembering things, especially when they came to a certain someone with big hair.
you put your mother’s photo album in your lap and skimmed through. polaroids decorated the carefully thought-out pages. you came across a page full of firsts, and touched one of them. it read;
FIRST BIKE RIDE.
“stevie!” you dragged out. “you’re too fast!”
steve looked back at you, not hearing what you said. he waved. “catch up!”
steve learned how to ride a bike faster than you, and took the liberty of teaching you. he was just kind like that.
it was a hot day in hawkins, and steve had noticed your garage was open. he had an extra bike, although it was too big, even for him. he had just learned how to ride a bike, and you, being his best friend,  just had to learn too.
“you’re getting it! kind of wobbly, but you’re staying up!” he praised.
it was fun, though you were behind him most of the time. you ended up a couple blocks away. you both were sweaty.
steve, even though you two were nine, was already so touchy. it was just how he was programmed. he had an arm slung around your shoulder, holding you close. “you ready to head back now?”
you laughed and joked, “no.” you mounted the bike anyway.
it was hard to relive the memories as you looked at the pictures.
moving onto the next, it was a blurry photo titled;
DIVING CONTEST.
you were on the edge of the pool, steve was in the water under you.
“you can do it, just dive over me!” he pressured you.
it was something he learned recently, diving. he made you stand in the deep end while he dived over you. it was scary, the thought of him landing on you.
he looked up to you with puppy dog eyes, begging you to try and dive.
“oh, i really hate you!” and with that, you dove. you didn’t want to brag, but you felt as if you dove better than steve.
as you surfaced, steve was clapping. “you did it! what’d i tell you?”
he hugged you for your bravery.
summers were mostly spent at steve’s, since he had a pool. his parents were gone most of the time too, so you didn’t have any eyes on you, telling you what you can and can’t do.
you two were fourteen.
the next photos were taken when you and steve had turned sixteen, and he had just gotten his car, a beautiful maroon BMW. he took you everywhere in it. there were pictures of you and steve on the hood with ice cream, you and steve headbanging to music you wouldn’t normally think of headbanging to, and one of you and steve off to your first day of high school.
highschool was scary for you, you knew that steve was going to do his own thing and leave you to do yours. that was okay, that’s how life worked.
in the year leading up to freshman year, you noticed that steve was changing. he was going out more, mostly late at night. you knew this because you could see him getting ready in his room, as his window was right across from yours. he didn’t bring you with him.
you two were young, and people grew apart. you knew that.
however, if you closed your eyes and tried hard enough to visualize it, you could picture him slipping from you. he was dangling over a black abyss, gripping onto your wrist. you were trying so hard to keep a hold on him, but he was slipping ever so slightly.
“hey babe, you’re doing it again.” a familiar voice pulled you out of your daydream.
you shake your head. “sorry, robin. it’s just... hard.” you say, pushing the photo album out of your lap. you gave a weak smile.
robin sat next to you on the floor, eyes skimming over the photos. “it’s alright, i understand how it feels to lose people.” she looked at you, then corrected herself, “or feeling like you’re going to lose someone.”
“am i going to lose you?”
she laughed, “you are such an idiot! you’ll never lose me, dingus.”
robin made it all better.
it was sophomore year, and your grip on steve had loosened even more. it scared you to no end.
you had found robin and immediately hit it off. you two were inseparable during freshman year. you still talked to steve of course, but rarely. he would avoid your eyes in the halls if he was with his friends, and would give you a small wave and smile if he was alone.
it was different outside of school though. he would also have his window open so you could hear his music playing. he would invite you over to swim, even if it was too cold to swim, but his pool was heated for christ’s sake.
when he invited you over to swim, you would always end the night in his room, on his bed. it was more intimate than it had been when you were kids. you sat and talked for hours, still damp from swimming.
you learned that he had his first kiss, and almost made it to second base but the girls parents walked in. you laughed at that. “you’re so stupid.” you would say.
steve was going to parties, but you knew that. you could see his headlights turn on every night he left.
he seemed so happy to have his group of friends, but you knew that they weren’t good people. they were awful, and would only continue to get worse.
when steve asked how you had been, you had to refrain from saying, “i’m awful steve. nothing is enjoyable anymore, because you aren’t with me.”
you settled for “i’m decent, getting good grades.”
steve’s music taste hadn’t changed much. he still put on shitty pop music only you liked. that was a secret he would kill you for if you ever let it out. he would die if his cool new high school friends ever knew he enjoyed shitty pop.
“hey, what do you say we go make some milkshakes?”
“milkshakes?”
robin jumped up. “yeah! how hard can it be? you have ice cream and milk right? just blend ‘em together and you’ve got a milkshake!”
you laughed. you loved robin.
your milkshakes turned out bad. they were too milky and not as frozen as normal milkshakes. you were eating them in your backyard. the grass was making your legs itch. the sun was setting.
“is that-?” robin asked. a car was pulling into the driveway of the house beside you.
“yup. let’s go in, yeah?” you ask and she nodded.
it was a blessing and a curse that you could look directly into his window from yours.
“oh my god! my eyes! they burn!” robin exclaims. as usual, steve had a girl over.
“god, why can’t he buy curtains?”
“his ego’s too big for that.” robin joked, and you laughed. hard. it was true, steve’s ego had grown bigger than his hair.
you sighed and flopped onto your bed. “what do you say we watch some awful movies?”
“i thought you’d never ask.”
junior year came around and steve had grown even more distant. he didn’t invite you inside anymore. you could see his room had changed, it wasn’t as childish as before. his walls were bare and weird. he shut you out of that part of his life.
he invited you over to swim once, then kicked you out when he remembered he had a girl coming over.
“why are you being like this?” you ask. your voice was small. you didn’t think it would come to this.
he scoffed. “what are you talking about?”
“you’re not... you anymore. not the steve i used to know.”
“i’m the same, it’s you that changed.” he spit. it was out of character for him, even then.
you did change, you could admit that, but you didn’t change nearly as much as him. he got mean. he wasn’t the little boy you would share popsicles with anymore.
after being pushed out of his yard, you sulked into your house and into your room. you were still dripping water. you wiped your eyes, confusing the wetness for water. it was tears. steve harrington had made you cry.
you dried off and went to call robin. “robs?”
“what’s up?” she said unusually chipper. “something wrong?”
“i don’t know. i’m so confused.”
“i’ll be over in a few, i’ve got red vines.” and she hung up.
you laughed through tears. you didn’t even like red vines.
robin slept over and left in the early morning, before you woke up. robin ate all of the red vines while you vented about steve. it was then that you admitted you loved him. something you thought you’d keep hidden away, somewhere where no one could find it.
“i get that, loving someone who doesn’t love you back.” she said. you didn’t know what she meant, but you appreciated it.
you got dressed, rubbing your face aggressively before walking out the door. a part of you wondered if steve felt bad for last night, if he would offer you a ride to school. he hadn’t driven you anywhere in years, though. it’s alright, you had your bike. the one steve had given to you when he taught you how to ride.
the air was getting colder, a sign of fall. it reminded you of the days you spent in steve’s bed watching movies, of when he would make you hot chocolate and get mad if you joked about spilling it in his bed.
when you arrived to school, you saw steve and a girl sitting on his hood. she was a different girl than the numerous others you had seen with him. perfectly permed blonde hair and bright pink lips. did he even really like her?
you didn’t want to watch, but you couldn’t pull your eyes off them. she was laughing loudly about something he said, putting a hand on his chest and leaning in.
it aggravated you for some reason. she wouldn’t know him like you did. none of the girls would know him like you did. no one would know about the scar on his right knee, and they wouldn’t know that he got it from a parkour mishap. they wouldn’t know that the large freckle on his right shoulder was used as the center for a flower, one that you drew on him. they wouldn’t even know that he tolerated shitty pop music. he tolerated it for you.
they didn’t know steve like you knew steve.
as you were remembering little details about him, you heard laughing. they were laughing at you. you felt your face heat up, and your feet moved faster than your brain could even process that they were laughing at you.
“oh my god.” you whispered. “what was i just doing, oh god!”
“hey, are you o-” robin said as you passed her.
you ran into the bathroom and slid down the wall. normally, you would dread even coming into the bathroom, especially sitting on the floor.
robin was close to follow. “what’s going on? did someone say something? i’ll beat them up.”
you laughed. robin would definitely not beat someone up, but the thought was nice. “no, it’s me. i don’t know what’s wrong with me. he’s... he’s slipping from me.”
“steve? why’s he slipping?”
you explained to her what you visualize, him slipping from your grasp every waking hour, and how bad it hurt.
robin was, rarely, lost for words. she resorted to hugging you, though the position was awkward.
“fuck him.”
you laughed, ignoring the tears coming out of your eyes. “yeah, fuck him.”
robin had lifted you up off the ground and walked you to your class. first period was the only hour you didn’t have with steve, thank god. you could feel the day already passing by as slow as it possibly could.
by the time third period had rolled around, you couldn’t ignore steve’s presence anymore. it seemed as if he was trying even harder to be obnoxious.
you raised your hand. “can i use the bathroom?” the teacher began to shake his head before you spoke up again. “girl problems.”
as if “girl problems” was something to never be spoken about ever, everyone got silent and turned to look at you, including steve. you fought the urge to look back, but could feel his eyes burning into your back. it was almost too bad. the teacher nodded and you grabbed your bag and left.
you wouldn’t be going back to that classroom today.
once in the bathroom, you were relieved to see it was empty.
if someone asked you to describe how you were feeling, you would say a leaf. a leaf that someone burned using a magnifying glass, something could easily be blown away and forgotten. in a way, you had been easily blown away and forgotten. you never thought this would happen.
soon, the bell rang and it was time for lunch. you and robin sat at a designated picnic table outside. she was usually late, and this day was no different.
one thing you hated was how steve’s group had gravitated towards the outside. it’s stupid, you thought. why would people just now begin to eat outside if the weather was getting colder?
while waiting for robin, your brain had flipped a switch. you needed to confront steve, you were done running away.
he wasn’t far away from you, another thing you hated.
“steve, can i talk to you?” you were shaking, oh god how you hated that.
steve just looked around and laughed, “any of you know her?” and everyone said “nope”.
you finally lost your grip on him.
and that was it. you were running. you cursed yourself for not just sitting and waiting for robin.
you cursed high school, for the way it took your best friend from you, or maybe it wasn’t high school. maybe it was steve himself. maybe you two just weren’t made to be friends for that long. maybe your friendship had an expiration date, and it had run out.
you didn’t want to be at school anymore, and you were okay with getting shit for ditching. you just couldn’t handle it anymore - the embarrassment. no one knew you, no one knew that you and steve are friends. were friends.
grabbing your bike and unlocking it, you rode away from school. people were looking, you knew that.
getting home, you didn’t bother to use the kickstand on the bike, you just let it fall to the ground. steve would’ve hated seeing that. good, you thought.
you had a box under your bed that you hated getting out, it hurt too bad. it was full of notes that steve had written you, notes in your locker in freshman year, notes in your lunches from second grade. you had matching mood rings in there, including his. he said “i’m getting too old to wear this, you can have it. y’know, for memories.” god how that hurt.
you wanted so badly to throw it away. you wanted to chuck the whole box out of the window and light it on fire. “no, god, no.” you said to yourself. you were being irrational. you would regret it if you destroyed it. what if steve wanted to talk again? but, you thought, that’ll never happen.
senior year was both fun and hard. fun because it was your last year in that god forsaken high school, and hard because steve had gotten even more popular. he was the king of hawkins high. he forgot you even more.
he didn’t invite you over anymore, and he finally got curtains.
he started dating nancy wheeler, a junior. you liked her, she was always nice to you. she was so smart too. you hated to think it, but you couldn’t stop wondering why they got together. she seemed too good for him.
you and robin had grown closer over the year. so close that you two had your own box. steves box was shoved haphazardly into your closet, forgotten.
school was strange, steve seemed to look at you more, but you didn’t know if he wanted to. you could feel his gaze on you, and when you turned back he immediately looked away. he was blushing almost, but you pushed that out of your mind.
“hey, you listening?”
you shook your head. it was a regular occurrence that you would daydream. “yeah, sorry. what were you saying?”
“there’s a party tonight, at tina’s.” robin mentioned.
“oh right. no way am i going to that.” you laughed. you weren’t a fan of parties, but you weren’t opposed to going to one. the only thing keeping you from this one was steve. he would undoubtedly be there.
robin sighed, “look, i know it’s about steve.” you looked at her. “which is fine by the way! i just think that this would be an opportunity to talk to him, y’know?”
you groaned loudly. “i love you robin, but you are so stupid sometimes.”
she laughed, “i know. but seriously, i think going to this party will be good for you, get your minds off things. who knows, maybe steve will come to you.”
you ran your hands down your face. “i don’t even have a costume.”
she shrugged. “so what? i’m sure people will be too excited to get drunk and forget to wear costumes.”
robin said she couldn’t come because her parents were expecting her home. you understood, but your hands were sweating from nerves as you opened the door to the house alone. robin was wrong for the most part, people were in costumes, with the majority wearing them.
the floor was sticky and stained, and it smelled like sweat. the living room was filled with teens dancing. it was shoulder-to-shoulder. loud music blasted throughout the house.
it seemed that you got there at the right time, as you saw steve stumbled down the stairs and out of the house. he looked angry, and sad almost.
though you had no alcohol in your system, you felt drunk, not in your right mind. you would never do this sober.
you tried to follow steve out of the house, but kept getting pushed around. it was all too hot in there, and you felt sticky. something definitely spilled on you.
by the time you got outside, steve was sitting on the porch. very few people were sat outside, and the few who were outside were smoking.
you exhaled, you didn’t even know you were holding your breath. you sat down next to steve.
“hi.”
he looked at you strange, as if he was trying to remember who you were. you felt your heart break into a million tiny pieces. “hi.” he finally said.
“i’m sorry if this is weird-” you began.
he cut you off. “no, it’s alright. i should be sorry.”
you should be, you thought. “why?”
he laughed. “i was an asshole, i am an asshole.”
“yeah.” you agreed. he was an asshole. “what did i do to make you so... mean to me?”
he shook his head and looked you in the eyes. you were almost too close. he still smelled the same. “you didn’t do anything. i was so closed off from everyone that i forgot everything i knew. i forgot that you were a human.”
you laughed as you felt your eyes welling up with tears. “i get that. do you wanna, i don’t know, take a walk?”
he nodded his head and stood up. “sure.”
as you walked inside the house again, you felt everyone’s eyes on you. why were you, a nobody, walking with steve harrington, and leading him somewhere no less.
steve took a deep breath when you got out of the cramped house, like he had been holding his breath the whole time. you wouldn’t blame him though, you almost couldn’t breathe at all in there.
“i’m sorry to pry, but did something happen in there? you seemed all... upset.”
he nodded. his voice was small, like he was a child again. “yeah, nancy uh, she said it’s all bullshit. i’m bullshit.”
“why?”
he shrugged and kicked a rock on the sidewalk. “she said, ‘like we’re in love’. i just walked out, i didn’t know what to do.”
“i’m sorry.” you said. you were sincere, knowing how much that must’ve hurt.
“it’s alright, i think it’s over. me and nance.”
“high school’s a bitch.” you said simply. he laughed. you loved his laugh. you missed his laugh.
“i missed you.”
you almost didn’t hear it. it took you a couple seconds to respond. “i missed you too.”
“what do you say we go back to mine and share a popsicle? like the old times.”
if you had time to visualize it, you would’ve seen steve standing under you, ready to catch you. you were the one falling this time.
“yeah, i’d like that.”
steve’s house was the same as you remembered it. it was bare, no real use for a decorated house if there was only really one resident.
he pulled a popsicle out of the freezer and broke it in half. “for you.” he kneeled down and presented it like a ring, like he would when you were kids.
“thank you, kind sir.”
he laughed. it still felt weird, talking to him. it felt too natural, but you guessed it was natural.
he led you outside, to the loungers next to the pool. it was too cold to be outside, but it felt warmer with steve there.
he was staring at you, you felt it. it was silent for a few minutes. “you still have it?”
“what?” you said. he pointed to your wrist. “oh yeah, i forgot about it.”
“i still have mine.” he said. he was talking about the matching friendship bracelets you had made. they were around five years old and they definitely showed it. yours had lost it’s bright color and had turned a nasty gray. “i didn’t like, willingly take it off if that means anything. it fell off in the shower. it’s in my wallet.”
“that means a lot, steve.” you said, genuinely. “it took me hours to make that shit.”
you both laughed. deep down, you hoped a part of him felt the same way you did, happy, relieved.
“i know a shitty popsicle doesn’t make anything better, it doesn’t excuse my actions,” he looked at you in the eyes again. “but if you’d let me, i’d like to make it up to you. drive you around, take you to the movies, everything we said we’d do but never got to.”
“are you asking me on a date, harrington?” you laughed. your face felt hot, too hot for the temperature outside.
he shrugged, “nah, i would never go on a date with you.” you could tell he was being sarcastic. he’s back, you thought. you missed his sarcasm. “but would you like that? to be friends again?”
you smiled. “yeah, i would.”
and you fell into a comfortable silence again. “did you know i had like, the biggest crush on you?”
you blinked. “what?”
“when we were kids, i was crushing on you, hard.” he laughed. “that’s sorta why i left you hanging. you didn’t feel the same way and i couldn’t handle that sort of rejection.”
“you’re an idiot, steve.”
you both laughed.
“what does that mean?”
“it means i liked you too, and if i’m being completely honest here, and don’t you dare make fun of me, i don’t think that crush went away.”
he smiled at you. “yeah, it’s kinda obvious. you’re very obvious.”
“i am not!” you leaned over to hit his shoulder.
again, you two just laughed. it felt good. it felt right.
something in his eyes and the way he looked at you told you his crush hadn’t gone away either.
steve had caught you.

*****
Part 1: highschool
Tumblr media
Since Suguru Niragi could remember, he was always a loser, always weaker than anyone else. Girls laughed at him and boys bullied him and if someone could actually handle looking at him, their face only showed pity. His school years were spent alone somewhere in a corner or just far away from potential troubles. There was a possible hope in going to high school in a completely different district but even that proved useless. Niragi still looked like a prey and if there is a prey, there is also a predator. So he would become as small as he could to hide but sometimes even that wasn’t enough.
These three boys picked on him since the first week of school, like if they could smell his fear, they preyed upon him, made the boy with glasses buy them snacks or lunches from his own allowance and would get pissed off at the end of the month if he didn’t have any money left for their cigarettes. And them getting pissed ment only one thing, punishment, in reality that was just an excuse to bully him harder than on the days the three boys were bored. Oftentimes the punishments were very unoriginal, that kind a child could come up with, other times the originality was astonishing, something no one in their sane mind would be able to come up with. Maybe the boys were just that, not mentally sane, or maybe an evil devoured them the moment they were born and so they did the same to others. An eye for an eye sort of thing.
By the last year of highschool Niragi couldn’t take it anymore, over the years his attempts for finding help ended in vain, no one was willing to stop them and in the end it was as if no one knew he was bullied, as if people didn’t notice his scared eyes and bruises. But Niragi didn’t know what was coming that day.
The boys dragged him to the bridge and this time it was not only the main trio but also a few of his other classmates. All of them cheered while he became a target of their baseball practice. Maybe he did something to them today that made even those classmates of his participate, Niragi couldn’t be sure anymore. No, it didn’t matter actually, any kind of word as a reasoning now was just an excuse trying to justify the bully's behavior. The abuse was too much and he was almost on his tipping point.
“Ts, you move one more time and I will make you eat it again.” The bully swung the baseball bat again while glancing around him. “Rice with piss.” He was the type who throws their head back when laughing too much. Was making him eat it so funny?
Suguru’s nose was bleeding. He could feel it before he tasted the coppery taste in his mouth and his vision was blurry, the first hit with a ball shattering his glasses on the ground. This had to be hell, purgatory or something, there had to be some divine reason, something to justify this torture. He hated himself, of course he did and through all of this pain a quick thought flashed in his mind. Maybe if he was in their position he would do the same, bully the weak.
“Yes? Oh, I would like to report fighting, they have (school name) uniforms, please be quick.” Niragi didn’t even realize that someone else was now watching him struggle to breathe, a girl in the same highschool uniform. Her voice sounded meak, scared and as if she was on the verge of tears, but she was standing like a picture of confidence with her eyes trained on one of the bullies.
“The fuck do you think you are doing, eh?” One of the bullies started to yell, however the girl didn’t even flinch, she just calmly closed the flip phone, slipping it back into her jacket. Now that Niragi had time to fully adjust his vision, which was still very blurry, he realized who the girl was.  Not only was she another student from his highschool, she was one of his classmates from the same homeroom. Y/N, that was her name, she wasn’t a prominent figure in the school, not really significant like class president or something, but she was there and she was always quietly watching. She was the type Niragi aspired to be, someone who had friends and someone who gets invited to things like karaoke or dates. Dates, she probably got a loads of confessions, in no way was she the school idol but you had to be blind to think she wasn’t pretty.
“I just reported you to the police, didn’t you hear? They are going to be here pretty soon.” Y/N was now laughing lightly and the whole group looked pissed, really pissed this time. What was she thinking, they were surely going to kill her for this. One of them ripped the baseball bat out of the grasp of the last one, ready to swing it at her.
“If I were you I wouldn’t do it.” Tight lipped smile slipped on her face, her eyes staring momentarily at him. “After all, if the police arrive and find me hurt or in a worse state… it would be just worse for all of you, wouldn’t it?” Her smile now contented many teeth, white with little yellow grinning at his abusers. Her cheeks raised, it was a genuine smile, she found this whole situation truly amusing.
By now the boys thought about the risk and decided that their little prey was not worth it, at least for now. “Whatever, bitch. Oi, boys, we are done here, let’s go for a drink.” The oldest commanded and all of them swiftly following his example started to walk away. Their departure also included some rude comments thrown at her and the last one, youngest of all of them, he was two grades below them and was very keen on becoming like them for some reason, readying punch in the air just to cease the action when the girl didn’t spare him even a glance.
She was now staring at Niragi intensely, without blinking, and then she finally opened her mouth and said. “Suguru Niragi, right?” The boy could only nod to her question. Her gaze changed direction, now at his feet staring at something on the ground. That’s when Niragi got reminded again of his blurry vision, she was looking at his glasses before her eyes once again returned to his face.
“Hey, Niragi… let’s be friends.” At that moment Niragi knew that those curious eyes actually looked at him, no pity, only interest beaming behind them.
And maybe his life was not a hell, maybe from now on it would get better.
**************
The bullying indeed got better, didn’t stop but got much more bearable with her by his side. She wasn’t by any means a sunshine person, most of the time she was silent, which made him incredibly nervous and twitchy, however, when she spoke it was always something interesting. The girl never showed interest when it came to boring things, instead it seemed that her head turned at anything slightly fascinating. It was in pure contrast with her appearance, a normal highschool girl that never got herself in trouble but always was witness to some. She really did have a knack for these kinds of situations.
So his new friend dragged him along, trouble never catching up to them out of pure luck or maybe it was like her superpower, that's what the boy always thought. After a few weeks of their friendship Niragi felt content, finally he had a light at the end of the tunnel, a safe spot for himself in the world. He didn’t yet realize that soon their paths would divide when it came to college and his sunny days could be over again. But for now he enjoyed her company, after all there was still at least 4 months before the graduation.
Part 2: bordeland
Tumblr media
College was another new start and with the promise of keeping in touch with his now sort of, Niragi wasn’t still sure, best friend, he was ready for new experiences. The first few weeks were fine, school was fun again and it seemed that he made a few new friends along the way. He now got invited to parties and shared dinners and genuinely had a good time for such an introvert.
However, his little bubble of happiness was meant to burst on one of the shared dinners after a long day of lectures. It was one of the days packed with long seminars and Niragi was ready to relax with his classmates over some good food and a bit of beer when it happened. They were sitting in the back of the restaurant, most of them already sporting one beer in hand when another group of people walked in. Loud and obnoxious yelling followed them and Niragi swore he recognized some of the voices.
The now college student should have known better, he did know them, of course he did, they made his life miserable for what felt like an eternity. Those bullies that proved to him the awfulness of humankind. The only thing Niragi now hoped for was that they would not notice him, that they wouldn't recognize him but he hadn't changed at all. The same hair, the same kind of glasses and the same scared expression.
And then it happened, one of them turned and his gaze became trained on him, his before yelling face turned into a horrible grin. This guy loved to push young Niragi’s face into the toilet, that was his thing, he really wasn’t that original in the means of “punishment” but he was still part of the group and that defined trouble.
“NO WAY!” His voice boomed through the restaurant, stopping the conversation at the table Niragi was sitting at. Most of his fellow classmates were now staring at the guy with confused or irritated expressions.
“Guys! Look who is there, Sugura Niragi.” His grin grew with these words and his friend’s attention was now at him, staring and waiting for any kind of elaboration.
Niragi didn’t know where to look, if he looked into the restaurant, he could see what felt like thousand of eyes staring at him, if he looked around the table he would get confused looks expecting explanation and if he looked before him he would look into the eyes of one of the most hated people by him, so he stared blankly into his glass, hoping that all of this could just disappear. Maybe she could just magically appear and save him once again, more like a thousand times again actually.
“You know each othe-'' But before one of his classmates could finish the question the booming voice sounded again. “Know him? Of course. Didn’t he tell you?” The rest of the guys were now coming closer, also recognizing him. Their laugh was like tiny little needles poking him and their whispers turned his stomach. His current classmates now could hear about how pathetic he was in highschool and Niragi knew that it was back, it was there again, he felt small and stupid. Did the universe really hate him this much?
But this time Niragi had a choice, he could just leave and ignore it and so he did. He rushed out leaving the payment on someone else’s shoulders while dodging and kind of arms that tried to grab at him, keep him at the hellhole. He runned for what felt like hours, sprinting down the streets until he was sure there was no way one of them could follow him. He felt terrible and knew that sleep would not come this night to him and it truly didn’t. He layed in his bed for hours until exhaustion took him out with a sweet promise of blissful ignorance of the nightmare he again became part of.
The next day was even more painful than the night before, he had to face his classmates and so when the time finally came and he had to approach someone, he chose Ayato. Ayato was always a smiling tall guy with slightly longer hair hiding the corners of his eyes and a mole under the right corner of his lips. He was a good guy, the kind of guy who would send you notes from the lecture if you asked him. However, now he looked like an instant death in Niragi’s eyes but there was no other choice than to talk to him.
“I wanted to pay you back, you probably had to pay for me when I suddenly left last night.” He couldn’t meet Ayato’s eyes, he couldn’t see in them how pathetic he was, not again, he couldn’t take it anymore. This was his burning point and there was no coming back.
“Yeah, don’t worry about it, man.” Ayato laughed and went back to rummaging through his backpack. Did he bother him, no, this was probably just a tactic on how to not have further conversation with him. Just appear busy and that pathetic loser Niragi will leave. Did they all really view him as pathetic? Fuck. They probably did. They must have laughed at him when he left with the whole group of his old classmates, his bullies.
World really is cruel.
And this was the point when he decided to change and so over the following years his sorrow turned into anger, burning and scorching flame that alighted everything inside that was still alive and breathing, the rest of the hope. The little happy moments were not enough. For example, going to college? He fucking deserved it for all the shit he went through so he didn’t expect anything else than to get accepted into one. He also still maintained some sort of contact with Y/N, both of them got quite busy in college, however otherwise Niragi had isolated himself.
But oh, how he wished those guys that tormented him could see Niragi now, he changed, just like his hardened heart he hardened his appearance. Piercings adoring his face and tongue, silver glistering as warning signs. He looked like a danger, no more the prey look and nervous stare, he was to be feared now. And it wasn’t just his appearance, he became rough and cruel slowly becoming just like those he despised but he always justified it in his mind that it was for his own good.
And so came another punishment for his foolishness.
The gods really hate me, hm? That was his first thought at the empty streets of the city which he once found overly crowded. “Is this hell!?” His yelling echoing down the long corridors of empty sidewalks and alleys.
It must have been days since he woke up in the silent city, he didn’t know what else to do now that there was no one, so he drank and drank all the alcohol he could find. And in one of his drunken moments they found him almost passed out in one of the dirty alleys near Shibuya. At first he didn’t want to go with them, too drunk out of his mind to understand what they were telling him, but they grabbed him and… that's all he could remember, he probably passed out.
When Niragi woke up his head was pounding and his throat felt sore but all of that was swept under the rug with the realization that under him were soft white sheets instead of harsh pavement. Slowly, as he could manage without his head shooting needles in it, he sat up upon the bed, he really was in a clean room, a hotel room but any kind of thinking was stopped with the hotel room’s door opening. This uninvited guest sported a kimono and sunglasses were obscuring his eyes.
“You must be the newbie, let me welcome you properly at The Beach, the only paradise in The Borderland.” The man was grinning widely and Niragi was sure of his interior motive but who gives a damn, he was the first person he had a proper conversation with in days.
And so his career as a player for beach and handsman for Aguni began.
Working for The Beach was on most days such a great fun, but it was as if Niragi slowly forgot that this was also real and just submitted to his dark thoughts full of violence and blood. He stopped caring about consequences or what was morally right, nothing mattered in his world to him and he verified it through the actions of others. He met vile criminals and monsters in the disguises of people here and in the real world too, so what was the difference if he joined in, in this utopia of sin.
But it was the moment he was beating up some guy, he didn’t even break any rule, he just pissed Niragi with his stupid face, that he noticed them. She was there, she was also inside this horrible nightmare, staring in shock at him with hand covering her open mouth. Y/N must have recognized him, there was no way she couldn’t, if someone could recognize him, it would be her, solely her. He didn’t see her face to face since his change, they only texted and called each other via phone, she must have thought it was because he got so busy but maybe inside, he knew he didn’t want her to see what he had become. Suguru Niragi really thought that their next meeting would be different, that those same eyes would look into his with the same adoration and curiosity it once held but there was none of it.
And there was no excuse for his actions, he could see that now and even though his anger still buried the vast amount of guilt, he was a bad person, he was sure of it. And he knew it for a very long time but there was no denying it now. Another punishment from the gods staring right at him in the form of a pretty lady he had a long history with. And maybe there was no worse cruelty than this, knowing even through all this hardship he received all his life, he could have a good life if he had chosen to be a good person from the start.
Too late to change my path.
In the end the anger always wins over guilt that has to be buried or you will be buried yourself. Niragi used to strongly believe in this conviction but now he felt like a little school boy again, pitiful glances piercing right through him, however this time it was much more meaningful. Here it wasn’t just strangers, it was someone he trusted and they stared inside him with shocked expression. He wondered what she saw, probably someone filled with anger and filth covered in blood, someone she couldn’t handle to look at. It was the same over again but this time different and caused by his own actions, so fully justified. There really isn't any way to redeem himself anymore.

hello.! could you spare some bitb headcanons? i'm planning to start writing some stuff for it in the coming months and you seem like the expert so :3
sorry this took so long to reply to.... jkghksfjhgkjfha
KIAN!! -
i like to think that he was the smartest in the group, he would always do well in tests and classes and shit and he would bunk off most of the time, it would really piss off his teachers because he would fly through school and get As on everything
he left just after finishing highschool, probably before rolan left, his parents didn’t even notice he was gone
he was homeless for a while after music didn’t work out but eventually made money through stocks or whatever the fuck he had going for him lmaoo
his monster is always some kind of tarantula to me, the fur or hair or whatever is the same as the animal pattern on his jacket and he has lots of reds and hot pinks all over :33
ROLAN!! -
he moved to town when he was about 5 or 6 and made friends with rand and kian (they were already friends)
he was the least book smart but he tried really hard in school, unlike the other two, and although he still skipped some classes he was definitely a teachers pet (i feel like he would just seem very trustworthy even if he had just been smoking weed with his friends behind the bleachers)
he left highschool and then stayed with rand after kian left, he didn’t really talk to him he more just stayed in galloway, after rachel died (or went missing) he stayed away from rand but he couldn’t bring himself to leave him behind
when he left he told rand he was going (this was the first proper interaction that they’d had since highschool ended) and rand got so pissed off at him
in college he was quiet but lots of people gravitated towards him, he was a sweet guy with a nice energy so he made lots of friends very fast
he did a lot of sports in highschool, i think he carried on doing some of them until he went back to galloway (probably running)
his bug arm always reminds me of a preying mantis, i think if he had gone full bug-o-mode he would have been some kind of preying mantis creature with whites blacks and blues
RAND!! -
okay so this fucking guy, this guy, this greasy freak is my favourite ever jrwi character and i will NOT be able to get all of the shit down i want to for him because there is SO. MUCH. i’m definitely gonna write this more concisely than i did the shit for the other two
okay, he was smart in highschool, the teachers all hated him so much (he was a less charismatic version of kian) he did well in exams because he actually did study out of class unlike kian BUT he was 10 times more distributive (really he was just doing anything to make his friends laugh)
spent a lot of time IN school writing the d&d campaign and a lot of time OUT of school catching up on the stuff he should’ve been doing IN school
he had a girlfriend for a time, they kissed, he didn’t like it, he realised he liked men, he realised he liked rolan, he repressed all of that and moved on, him and his girlfriend broke up (due to him not spending any time with her, ignoring her in school and spending all the time they did have together talking about rolan or kian, basically him being an overall bad boyfriend), he moves on with life, basically forgets she ever existed
all through all of this time he has also been constantly getting into arguments with his parents and trying to do everything he could to NOT be with his sister (not that he didn’t love her it’s just he didn’t want to spend every waking hour with her)
his parents liked rachel more than him, it wasn’t her fault, rachel was always the most perfect child ever, she admired rand so much she really wanted to be as cool as him (she didn’t understand much about her brother but she loved him anyway)
after rachel was kidnapped rand started to ignore kian and rolan, he started slipping behind in classes and he stopped distracting people in classes, then he stopped coming into school at all, he never graduated
he locked himself in his room during the day and spent all night looking for rachel in the bayou (miracle he didn’t get turned lmao, maybe rach was protecting him in some way) he regretted everything and he would do anything for just another minute with his sister
kian left and didn’t even say goodbye, rand thought he deserved to be ignored for being such a bad friend
it was rolan leaving that broke him, everything was falling apart, he screamed and cried and cursed at rolan as he was driving away, the last thing he said was “i love you” but rolan never heard
he didn’t leave galloway, he couldn’t leave his sister alone again
if he ever went bug-o-mode i think he would be some kind of scorpion creature, or like, idk, a cicada lmao
honestly this is just how i thought the campaign ended canonically but idk anymore: when he talked to his sister he was hallucinating (the same way as when he was talking to dead kian) and he bled out floating in the swamp looking up at the sky
OKAY THATS IT…. BUUUT i do have a shit ton of conflicting headcanons and also smaller character headcanons that i might just drop in your inbox sometimes if that’s okay with you :DD!! sorry this took like one billion years… i didn’t even get everything….
