There's this 1994 movie My Father the Hero, starring Gérard Depardieu and Katherine Heigl, which I watched probably 100 times after school in 6th grade. (I didn't have a lot of VHS options at the time; it was someone else's house.)

This is the summary:

A hapless father falls victim to the romantic mischief-making of his teenage daughter while holidaying in the Caribbean. When the girl takes a shine to a fellow tourist, she decides to spice things up by claiming her father is actually her older lover and has assumed the fatherly role to avoid prying eyes. Her plot backfires, and the result is a series of comic misunderstandings.

At a certain point in the movie, unbeknownst to the dad, everyone at this resort believes this man is preying on a young girl (IIRC she has also lied that she's 18 rather than 14, so they think he's gross but not illegal).

And, not knowing how it will look, the dad sits at a piano at dinner and sings "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" while everyone else in the room is like 😬😬😬😬😬😬

Now I'm sort of imagining a SamJohn weirdcest version of this. Idk what the situation would be, though. The song, if it is a song, would obviously be different.

Maybe it's around other hunters; maybe it's ON a hunt, around civvies.

I feel like so many non-americans go along with weirdcest because that's the idea of it. like Sam and Dean sleeping in the same bed etc etc in the context of them being white men in the usa, I think could be seen as very weird. but I'll admit that sometimes people talking about their idea of weirdcest made me feel uncomfortable because I act the same with my family, and it made me even question IF my family was weird (it's not). also I pretty much live in a country where nudity is not a big deal in general. Like I've always shared a bed with my family members, I still share a bed with my brother sometimes, and as I said being naked around eachother is? normal? it's just a body and it's literally either my mom or my brother and even my dad sometimes. I don't see what the big deal is. like going along with weirdcest headcanons is mostly fun but it's clear that most of those headcanons were made up by white americans lol

Well put. I actually am American and in a lot of/most contexts would call myself white, but I am mixed race and multicultural and it's truly fascinating to see different cultural standards even within my own family. Im aware that most tumblr ppl's idea of weirdcest is based around a white midwest American 90s sort of perspective, but the original idea has taken on this huge scale that I do think has normalized the kind of waspy hegemonic cultural norm on tumblr itself, within the fandom. And thus it makes anyone outside of that structure feel alienated. It's like the race/culture version of heteronormativity. There's a word for this right?

And like I always have enjoyed weirdcest. I get the feeling that some people who saw my post, who maybe don't know me very well, assumed that I was hostile to it or didn't know what it was, or whatever. And that's kind of frustrating bc it was meant to me a tongue in cheek kind of vent post meant for people who also felt the same way, it wasn't meant to start discourse, and I had hoped people would understand that. I guess that's on me for not being more clear. Maybe people were just getting defensive. White people love to get defensive.

Anyway I turned off rbs on the op and I just hope this dies down after a bit. Either way it's nice knowing that others feel the same way and hey, maybe this will get people to be a little more culturally aware idk.

happy wincest wednesday liz!! as a huge full house of wincest fan, i have to wonder about your samdean headcanons in some of those fics. do you think samdean is inevitable, or at least possible, in every version?

happy happy wincest wednesday!! I'm so glad you like the full house thing. (It genuinely gives me a jolt of pride whenever I see anyone else using the term ☺ -- like, aww, there's my horizontal-and-vertical-incest baby, all grown up and--and saving China!)

Anyway -- I am a wincest tragic, so... I really can't conceive of any canon-based universe where Sam and Dean don't end up together, whether in actual-canon gencest, 'weirdcest' as I hear the kids are calling it these days, or actually full-blown brojobs and buttstuff. I mean, that's kind of the whole point of the show, or the show that I watch at least which is The Story of Sam and Dean Winchester. They start off apart, and tangle closer together, first because of destiny and then because of choice. That's always, always going to happen in a canon universe.

The Full House of Wincest is always intended to be as canon-based as possible, given constraints. As much as possible, I try to keep John's characterization more or less consistent with what we see, even given this awful thing he's doing (which can shade more or less awful, but I really try not to write him as a monster bc a) I find that boring, but also b) John Winchester in canon isn't actually a monster, because he's more complicated than that -- let's stick with it being complicated as much as possible). Even if it starts when Dean's really young and even if it's straight-up grooming and even if some bad shit goes down -- well, John started Dean on this crazy hunting life too young and groomed him to be a soldier and bad shit did go down, so sex is just... one more thing. (One thing about that: sometimes the scenarios as presented in a FHoW are actually a whole lot kinder than some of the same moments in canon. At least like this Dean's getting some kind of affection and attention, you know? [Ouch!])

So, if you pair those two paragraphs: yeah, I don't see a single FHoW scenario where Sam and Dean don't end up together. If by smooshing them together as samdean you mean strictly actual-sex incest and not just the emotional incest of canon -- I think there's still a really strong chance that actual-incest happens, even if maybe they don't end up continuing to have sex long-term. One thing about it is that for Dean, a permission structure in his head has already been formed: because John already opened that door, Dean knows it is possible to have sex with a nuclear family member and that that's not... necessarily a bad thing (regardless of extenuating circumstances and consequence). Whether he's able to do that with (or to) Sam is something he has to decide later. If it's a universe where Sam knows (or finds out), I feel like that'd become a bigger obstacle, given Sam's canonically rebellious feelings about John: this is yet another way John has ruined Dean/their family, and he can't be like John, can he? (Oh, honey. The places you'll go.)

The most interesting thing about John/Dean for me (and indeed any external Dean ship -- Benny, Deacon, Gordon, etc) is how it becomes part of Dean's character -> how that reflects on the actual story of the show -> how it becomes part of Sam/Dean. Like, Dean/Benny is fine and fun on its own, but the real magic is how it's part and parcel of the story of mistrust and fear and cheating and longing that's the story of s8. John's the same way -- I don't particularly care about John as a person in himself (though he's fine and interesting); what matters to me about him is the effect he has on his children, and in a John/Dean situation that's turned up to 11. So years later, when Sam finally touches Dean's jaw in a particular way, how does that history inform the way that Dean responds? It's just... the best. What a goddamn show that lets us play with all of that in a way that still, somehow, amazingly, makes the characters actually feel like they're in-character, like it could've just happened in a deleted scene.

gen is a fic that's not about a romantic/sexual pairing, like a character study or a fic that's about platonic relationships etc

gencest is... hard to explain cause i don't believe in it.. gencest is like, what people who don't want to say that they ship wincest use instead. i guess technically it's like a less sexual version of wincest that would include just sam and dean being weird but not necessarily having sex... but i honestly think tagging things as gencest/weirdcest just complicates things and doesn't let people filter properly if they have triggers and stuff, but that's just my opinion

What made you ship it? This ask :)

What are your favorite things about the ship? I can see the appeal with Sam having someone he relates to or I guess sees a younger version of himself in. I can also see the appeal in the Winchester Method of Being Family and Obsessed With Each Other, how it would be refreshing to Sam to have someone with that level of devotion that Dean already has without any of the baggage. I like the potential interplay between the kind of narcissism of him projecting his past self onto Jack and his own dislike of his past choices/who he was when he was younger. I could buy a fic of it framed as sort of a do-over with Dean, probably subconciously on Sam's part? Also some messy sort of do-over with Sam as John and Jack as Sam, except this time there's dicks touching. I also think that Sam getting someone to take care of, who let's themselves be caretaken without fighting, would be novel and maybe gratifying for him. On a nasty level, Sam big and Jack small(er) and I want that twink to be fucked until he's cock stupid and can't walk. For Jack, Sam is hot and there's that imbalance thing of Jack being naïve about the world since he's like 3 days old or something and just blindly trusting this hot older man.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? Probably that I am incapable of shipping the brothers with anyone on an emotional level that's not their brother because they do just have that weirdcest/gencest thing going on. So I don't think I'd buy a relationship where Dean is not anywhere in the picture (either literally or via Sam's feelings/projections/whatever) at all.
