the gunner channel's xp leveling

i'm skipping over the taste buds for now because i have to come up with stats for most of their opponents and calculate CRs for all of the little guys they have to fight. also figuring out starstruck was pretty interesting. anyway:

a starstruck odyssey:

this analysis is split between standard combat and ship combat--it considers ship combat as leveling in deployment rather than in individual class. realistically they used milestone leveling for both. also, the scale of the finale would have thrown off leveling significantly.

standard tactical combat

most of these involve the gunner channel running for their lives, unless they're specifically going into an encounter to pop off.

all in the hot exit: this combat has a lot of enemies, so i scaled it based on what brennan said during the encounter about the relative danger of each group. i considered a modifier because they didn't actually kill most of the enemies in this encounter, but i would have added a modifier for them having to get the jibjobbers and the number of enemies anyway, so it balances out.

rec pol: basically nine paul blarts. CR 1/4, for a total of 450 XP

amercadian soldiers: CR 1/2. i split the group because the lieutenants have separate abilities. total of 500 XP

amercadian lieutenants: CR 1, separate because of their differieng abilities. total of 1000 XP

uftp agents: CR 2. my assumption is that they're level >5 rogues. total of 2250 XP

repo reapers: technically they have different abilities, but i've grouped them here because it didn't make a huge difference in actual combat. CR 3, total of 2100 XP

needles & jan de la vega: CR 3 and 4 respectively--total of 1800 XP

warfare whitneys: CR 5. they're terrifying, especially for a low level party that just ran the gauntlet of all of the other groups

total XP count: 13500 XP, or 2250 each

wallops at swallop's: the gunner channel's mastery of tactics are really at play here--for the most part, they get their squishy people out of the way and get their objective (kublacaine) while doing a lot of damage (skip, sid, gunnie, barry) and letting their tank concentrate fire (barry).

sheriff warner codge: i'd say he's a level >10 spellcaster based on his attacks and teleportation, thus the CR 7, for a total of 2900 XP

lieutenants: two of them at a CR 3, for a total of 1400 XP

deputies: six of them at CR 1 for a total 1200 XP

total XP count: 5500 XP, or 917 each

baustin skiffy limits: this fight is split between standard and ship combat--the individual combatants were not difficult for the gunner channel to deal with. still, a lot of good tactical work--improvised cover, clutch spellcasting, and interesting mechanics on the skiffs.

soldiers/brigaders: total of 13, at a CR 1/2, for 1300 XP

amercadian lieutenants: 2 of them at CR 1, for 400 XP

total XP count: 1700 XP, or 283 each

flee from fantanimalland: this one is a little tricky--the party is split across locations and dealing with different threats. most of the threats are circumvented--riva deals with barry nyne by luring him to the escape pod, gunnie buys a maple cake, sid and skip go on a sidequest, and the gunner channel crashes a ship into the guernican art squad headquarters.

chamberlain drablian: CR 3 for 700 XP

hogg cobb: CR 3 for 700 XP

barry nyne: CR 6, but with a 0.5 modifier because riva doesn't actually do damage; they just get him off the ship. 1150 XP

guernican art squad: 4 of them at CR 1/2 for 400 XP

arcadia prime: CR 1/2 for 100 XP. separate because she's annoying

total XP count: 3050 XP or 508 each

battle of the brands: this is the big tactical combat of the season. no running, no ship shenanigans, just pure combat. it's also the fight with the hardest individual opponents by far. extremely deadly--everyone except for gunnie goes down at least once. the gunner channel is lower-level than all of their opponents, so they have gear and secret plans to make up the difference.

smaggy squirrel & brobbin bunny: based on their abilities and my guesses about their damage output, i'd say they're level 10 operatives, at CR 5. total of 3600 XP for them both

plinth: given the abilities, i based its stats on the elder brain. CR 14, for 11500 XP

brutus: vercadians use dragon stats--brutus is a reskinned adult green dragon. CR 15 for a total of 13000 XP

total XP count: 28100 XP, or 4683 each

jailbreak: another split encounter--mostly stealth with a sprinkling of ship combat towards the end.

myrmidon station guards: 10 defeated in standard combat; CR 1 for a total of 2000 XP

total XP count: 2000 XP, or 333 each

the luckless, the abandoned, and the forsaked: another split encounter, with an emphasis on ship combat. everyone except for riva and gunnie engages in standard combat.

uftp agents: 10 of them, at CR 2, for a total of 4500 XP

barry nyne: a repeat--CR 6, for a total of 2300 XP. technically defeated by the barry speech, but they did direct combat.

king prilbus: technically based on an intellect devourer, but i upped the CR because he starts off in the body of zortch. CR 3 for a total of 700 XP

total XP count: 7500 XP, or 1250 each

standard combat total: 61350, or 10225 each. assuming the same xp leveling pattern from dnd, this would put the gunner channel at level 5, instead of the level 6 they actually achieved.

ship combat

this analysis functions a little differently than standard--xp gains go to their ship deployment levels and the estimations are different. i scaled it as follows:

the reason this chart doesn't start at zero is because ship deployments always start at rank 0 in SW5e. by technicality, advancement in ship deployment is by milestone, because it's up to the discretion of the dm. i just used simple doubling to estimate how much they would get out of each ship combat. the gunner channel all started at level one, so prospective leveling doesn't exactly match how much they progressed.

furthermore, this analysis has to consider the rankings of ships and their relative scale. the wurst is a tier 2 medium-sized mess freighter; its ASIs went to constitution and strength. this is a ship that could take a hit but not do much else.

welcome to the spacin' life, buddy!: the only pure ship combat of the entire season. it's a solid introduction to how the mechanics work and a good illustration of the capabilities of the gunner channel to start.

armstrong roid removers: 20 tiny ships, at CR 2, for a total of 9000 XP

the lady pike: based on its stats as a medium ship, i evaluated the lady pike at CR 5, for 1800 XP

total XP count: 10800 XP, or 1800 each

baustin skiffy limits: as stated before, this was a split combat chase encounter. once they get to the ship the gunner channel purely uses deployment skills.

amercadian flagship: this generally serves as a threat preventing the wurst from entering atmo; thus i applied a 0.25 modifier to it. CR 18, total of 5000 XP

brigade tigers: total of 10, they took down 5 before jumping to ftl. CR 2, for a total of 2250 XP

total XP count: 7250 XP, or 1208 each

jailbreak!: another split combat, though most of what they did from the ship was cover fire for stealth approaches from the prison.

myrmidon station guards: i set the general damage at 10, between riva's suicide charge and sidney's cover fire. CR 1, total of 2000 XP

vercadian protector droid: same stats as brutus, CR 15. dealt with in one shot from sundry sidney with a crit from the ship's weapon. 13000 XP. technically would have a downgrade to ~CR 5 by ship standards, but i'm letting them keep the initial one because the hit that took it out was insane.

total XP count: 15000 XP, for 2500 each

the luckless, the abandoned, and the forsaked: everyone and their mother here with their guns trained on the wurst. despite that, i applied a 0.5 modifier to the majority of these enemies because of a few things: margaret encino's campaign office diverting enemies to face each other and/or flee the combat, allies from u4f and the vercadians, recent weapons & shield upgrades, and the presence + dispersal of gnosis as an artifact level enhancement to the ship. the encounter could have been a lot worse.

uftp flagship: CR 18, 0.5 modifier. total of 10000

uftp fighters: CR 2, 10 total, for 4500 XP

amercadian flagship: CR 18, 0.5 modifier. total of 10000

guernican art squad flagship: CR 18, 0.5 modifier. total of 10000

brigade tigers: CR 2, 20 total, for 9000 XP

grivarr command vessel: CR 18, 0.5 modifier. total of 10000

grivarr fighters: CR 2, 10 total, for 4500 XP

repo reapers mercenary vessels: CR 8, 4 total, 0.5 modifier, for 7800 XP

warfare whitneys: CR 5, 30 total, 0.5 modifier, for 27000 XP

total XP count: 98200 XP, or 15466 each

ship combat total: 125850 or 20975 each, which puts the gunner channel at level 4 deployment abilities. they ended the season at level 3, but i would assume that they'd level up from the final encounter alone.

final comments:

a starstruck odyssey has some of the best and most unique combats dimension 20 has ever done, and utilizes a different system to make the most of it. while sw5e does have bases in dnd 5e, the differences really shine in ship combat and certain character classes.

classes and party comp first:

while the operative and berserker abilities remain pretty close to dnd (rogue and fighter/barbarian respectively), sw5e branches out when it comes to the casters.

the consular takes on metamagic abilities from the sorcerer, with arcane recovery from the wizard, and a variety of subclasses that range into cleric abilities.

the sentinel runs on a partial casting progression that can go towards tech casting or force casting, leaving a lot of options for customization. the base abilities combine warlock mechanics with some bardic abilities, for a mixed casting progression (no higher than 7th level spells in exchange for ideals and kinetic dice).

the engineer takes influence from the artificer subclasses, but with potent aptitude (bardic inspiration) and the full casting progression of a bard. this class can also split the difference between tech and force casting, though it leans more toward the former than the latter. subclasses cover reskinned artificer abilities, sorcerer subclasses, and more

the scholar functions as a unique class, with a variety of support abilities that can bolster a party, as well as a large spectrum of individual abilities. this class takes superiority dice and maneuvers from the battlemaster fighter, but allows for optimization into particular skills depending on subclass choice and party balance.

the gunner channel leans harder on the casters than the martial classes, but everyone has unique abilities and specialties that work very well. brennan said everyone made busted characters and he meant it.

ship combat:

space travel opens up a lot of options for encounters and party movement that you wouldn't ordinarily get in a game.

most dimension 20 seasons involve travel in a limited scope, but starstruck has the gunner channel bouncing all over the galaxy. the ship functions as the home base, but leaves plenty of opportunity for exploration and encounters.

it also makes improvements to the ship a focus--the gunner channel consistently modifies their ship, from the stealth drive to the atomo-torch particle blasters to the kaleida-connect acme-ashmun telescoping targetting systems to barry's big win.

overall combat:

most of the time the gunner channel is running for their life, making hot exits like no tomorrow. they're not the heroes, they're the scoundrels trying to make a living, getting caught up in machinations and making the best of it. it makes for a very tactical season; the players are low-level and thus really optimize their combats when they can--concentrating fire on their tank, getting cover for the squishies, prioritizing movement-based items (jet pack, rocket boots), armor boosts, and varied weapons (rotary cannon, stun grenades, charge fragmentation, gun boots). they go all in on the crunch and get really technical when the galaxy is utterly chaotic.

Most of the major events in the Haltmann War, in more-or-less chronological order:

The distraction plan is successful and the Crew + Kirby manage to get into the Access Arc undetected...but shenanigans ensue because it's them and they all get separated early on.

Susie succeeds in copying Mario's Player Data over to Elanore, but doesn't kill him right away, because even if she wasn't afraid of how Movie Mario would react to her killstealing she'd still let him be the one to do the deed since she promised him revenge if he helped her and it would go against what's left of her principles to go back on a deal.

Lots of cool fight scenes down on the surface, with Marcy, Shroomy, Kaizo, Amy, and the other Major Side Characters, as well as the Hologram Trio, getting most of the focus.

There's also a scene with Slenderman, Siren Head and Huggy Wuggy teaming up and absolutely slaughtering Haltmann's forces.

Elanore and Barney decide to help Mario escape because he seems like a nice guy. Unfortunately, the Tax Evasion Yoshis find out and won't let them go without a fight.

Primp Town comes under attack because of course it does, allowing the Puyo Puyo characters, the Koopalings (minus Iggy 'cause he's trapped with the other mad scientists), Root and Lil Coding to show off their skills.

Tari and Saiko find Hal, who's been upgraded Mecha-Knight-Style into the Halt Monitor and is guarding the bootleg Guardian Pod Susie made from the God Box Shard.

The Access Arc's defenses come online to assist Haltmann's fleet against the good guys' much larger fleet, and Sage retaliates by bringing out the Death Egg and fighting Death Star Parody to Death Star Parody, which provides an amazing background for the ongoing fight between Movie Mario and Melony's team

The New and Improved Augmented Security Swipe takes to the battlefield back on the ground, getting into a fight with the side characters and surprise entries Dusty Grumpton and Heavy Squid, while Joe, Dusty's Dad and Fury Bowser fight the King Salmonids and that one giant robot boss from Kirby 64.

Bob and Boopkins run into The Goomba, who now has a personalized Robobot Armor he calls his Executive Suit. It has four massive arms because he, like most Goombas, has kind of a complex about that sort of thing. He's also still only calling Boopkins Fishy, which makes him rather quickly shift from trauma-and-bad-at-fighting-induced-fear to also-trauma-induced-murderous rage

Cody discovers that he inherited his mom's skill with a shotgun when his siblings nearly get killed by a squad of Octoling Clones that slipped past Primp Town's actual combatants.

Kirby, Luigi and Perry find Susie guarding the Scientists, and it's immediately obvious that they're going to have to knock some sense back into her

A second invasion fleet appears in the Internet Graveyard, only to discover that it has not been left unprotected, with 1, 2, Juliano and Knuckles leading the Dead Memes as a well-coordinated army instead of the chaotic feral mess Haltmann had probably been expecting

3 and 4 find Vee and Hex, and while 3 and Vee's frustratingly similar personalities do make them clash at first they manage to get the kids on their side like Mario did. And then the Bob-Omb Battlefield Chain Chomp shows up with a plasma cannon mounted on it.

Meggy ended up alone and, in a scene framed almost identically to the Octo Expansion Agent 3 boss cutscenes, finds DST-19, the Octoling Clone who most closely replicated their DNA donor: Desti. It even has her original Blaster, the signature hot-rod paintjob faded to almost nothing and replaced by patches of rust from its years at sea.

Movie Mario looks like he's on the ropes after a devastating blow from a Super Waluigi Launcher attack, only to tap into the God Box's power and become Mari0, which gives him a second wind also unleashes his secret army of Anti-Minions onto all of the ground battles.

There's also a massive, surprisingly powerful Anti-Meme version of the Onceler who shows up in Primp Town

At the Goomba fight, Booplins manages to actually climb up the mech while Bob's drawing fire with his actual direct fighting, and he proceeds to push the Goomba out of the mech, take control of it himself, and use it to stomp the Goomba without remorse.

Mario, Elanore and Barney defeat the Yoshis, with Mario afterwards lamenting his broken friendship with the main green one, not knowing that he's actually still conscious and has been given some things to think about

Saiko and Tari have a lot of trouble with Halt Monitor, but eventually manage to break through his reprograming thanks to their shared past in the Reboot timeline

Just when it looks like the Primp Town group is beat, Lily discovers that her siren song is the least of her voice's powers, because she unlocks the power to SHOUT DEVISTATINGLY AND IMPOSSIBLY LOUDLY, which basically deletes the Mega-Anti-Onceler, most of the invaders...and a great deal of the surrounding countryside.

During the Susie boss battle, she gradually realizes that her situation with the God Box Shard is a direct and terrifying parallel to what happened with her father and Star Dream. She's not exactly cured of her corruption, but she does at least now know there's a problem and is actively fighting against it. Unfortunately, between all the damage to the Access Arc, the God Box's influence permeating everything by this point, and Mari0 and A.S.Swipe being Mari0 and A.S.Swipe, she doesn't currently have any way to call the invasion off

Meggy vs DST-19 is nasty, both because Obvious Trauma Reasons but also because DST-19 turns out to legitimately just as good as the original Desti was, and besides the lack of talking is even acting exactly like the original would have. Ultimately the duel leads to a draw, at which point DST-19 actually finally talks, commenting on how Meggy's getting slow in her "old age," because apparently she's had Desti's memories the whole time and was looking for a rematch! So now she's part of the group, apparently.

Also A.S.Swipe gets blown up again. Hopefully for good but probably not.

It's at this point that everybody in the Arc actually manages to meet up at the bootleg Guardian Pod...well, almost everybody. Guardians are still missing up until they come crashing through a wall still pursued by the Cyber-Chomp, who's then quicky taken down and freed from its cybernetics by Executive Suit Boopkins, because he's tough now apparently. We'll see how long it lasts.

Meanwhile, out in space, Mari0 is handing Melony's team their asses and Sage is getting way too into tearing the Arc apart, to the point where she's seemingly forgotten that everyone has to actually escape from it before she finishes destroying it. Eggman is very proud of her.

The Arc group gets inside the Pod, which the Chomp puts inside its mouth, and they all shoot out the nearest airlock just in time to not get blown the fuck up, since the Chomp is the Chomp and can totally survive the vacuum of space and falling from low orbit. While that's happening Mari0 sends the group fighting him crashing to the ground

this leads to the final battle happening in a massive crater. While the Arc group is mostly still fresh to go, the space battle and ground battle groups are running on fumes at this point, with the chaos emeralds spent, Waluigi and the Demigods unable to access their powered up forms, Shaggy fucking dead (and poofed because it turns out he was the Shaggy that Axol drew on Anime Island), and Creative Mode disabled.

Despite this they still stand up to keep fighting, with Waluigi pulling out a tennis racket(gloriously fitting), Desmond doing his best with his lance and shield, Steve breaking out the Diamond Gear, and Melony actually having Kirby use her sword to become Fierce Deity Kirby and pulling out Inkweaver to use herself.

Just about everybody still standing working together(including a surprise Lawyer Kong pulling a Cease and Desist for a brief stun at one point) just barely manage to take him down...except the boss music just changed keys instead of ending.

Mari0 grabs Luigi, stating that its fitting he'd use SMG4 Mario's brother to gain the power to destroy this world, given what happened to his own, and starts fucking absorbing all of his Meme Energy! This gives him the boost he needs to start draining the Meme Energy and Anti-Meme from everyone and everything around him, except for Mario because he wants his counterpart to ba awake enough to suffer and the Haltmann siblings thanks to their immunity to Anti-Meme energy.

Regardless, this allows Mari0 to assume his final form, Mari0 Soul('cause Kirby), with only Mario, the Haltmann siblings and Peach(who has no Meme Energy of her own thanks to the Worst Activation Ever) left standing to fight him

Except, as the fight wears on and it all seems hopeless, their friends start managing to jump back into the fray, still weakened from exhaustion, injuries, pain from the extraction, and the fact that they can't use memes to screw with reality like usual, but no less willing to help save the day

Even Yoshi manages to come back and sides with the heroes, allowing for a last-minute Big Super Move courtesy of the whole Seven Star Children thing Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Wario, Yoshi and Donkey Kong have going on(from Yoshi's Island DS) that Mari0 couldn't have possibly seen coming thanks to his origins. And now he dead and the Anti-Memes die with him

Now there's the cleanup, including dealing with the whole "Desti is a goo clone now" situation, detoxing everyone who got pumped full of Anti-Meme Energy (especially Susie), and figuring out what to do with a whole extra weak-but-fully-functional-and-stable Meme Cycle Set who on one hand are creations of the God Box meant to be used for evil but on the other hand are literal children who ultimately decided to be good the very first chance they got.

Also Yoshi now gets to join Peach and Welony in the "Attempting Redemption" group! Mario is probably going to be significantly more wary about this one, considering.

zara hart was born and raised in kings haven, massachusetts. she spent her whole life in one little town with the same greasy diners on the same three streets, and she hated it. it was probably why she got into trouble so often: idle hands, as the saying goes.

also, you know, the unmedicated adhd didn’t help lmao.

it didn’t help that her parents spent most of their lives in the family restaurant. at first, zara did her homework in the back booths, but after one too many vaulted straws and games of 'the restaurant floor is lava', she was banished to ride her bike outside–as long as she looked both ways, twice.

her parents did their best not to let zara in on their economic problems, but it was pretty obvious as she got older. in high school, she waited tables at the restaurant, and quickly realized after watching that her parents struggle that her dreams of running away to italy, meet some dashing stranger, and then drive away from the world together into to the fading sunset in his vintage roadster weren't going to happen.

instead of living out a lifetime fairytale, she went to school online and got her nursing degree, and now she's a nurse in the er at the same hospital she was born in.

pretty much her entire identity is taking care of other people, and her signature move is getting over-involved in people's, especially her parents. she knows that her dad has struggled with his vices in the past, so she's personally going to ensure he doesn't fall into his old habits.

overall, zara is sunshine personified ( including the searing heat from her fits of passionate rage when feels something is unjust ). she's the kind of person that believes in the best of everything (think jess from new girl, phoebe from friends, and leslie knope from parks and rec). however, she does have a quick temper, and is constantly working on being as zen as she wants people to think she is.

a goofball who enjoys pranks and shenanigans at all hours of the day. she’s lowkey an adrenal junkie; that’s why she specialized in er nursing instead. she loves the blood and gore lmao.

she’s an avid runner. i know, gross, but she gets up at five in the morning everyday just so she can run a couple miles before work, or she'll get home and run after a graveyard shift. there's something sick in her head.

she’s a not-so-secret Hopeless romantic. her dream is to run into her soulmate on the beach at sunset, and they'll both be listening to taylor swift and somehow get their air pods mixed up.

but in reality she doesn't have time for romance after one too many failed relationships, and tbh no one can ever live up to her dream diary, so all her dates stay in her mind.

General TOH Headcanons

Grimwalkers don’t really feel heat (unless it’s something extremely hot).

⬆️ Grimwalkers aren’t affecting by the boiling sea or boiling rain.

⬆️ Atalanta didn’t know that this was just a grimwalker thing and just thought people were exaggerating.

Also, if a Grimwalker has an incomplete galderstone, it results in either no magical abilities (aside from glyphs) or unusual magic abilities.

Grimwalkers also have an affinity for beast keeping or plant magic

Lystra is still alive, she used a curse similar to the palisman curse to stay alive (much like Philip/Belos had).

Lilith actually doesn’t remember much from her time in the emperor’s coven (similar to Hunter, Steve (partiality), and Atalanta in the golden duo au). This is due to their brain blocking everything out.

Raine and Steve are clumsy

Atalanta and Boscha have a complicated relationship (a mix of platonic and romantic), though neither of them chooses to label it.

⬆️ They, along with Luz and Amity, get teased for it so much.

Othala and Boscha are cousins.

Solis and Lunna are from Latissa, though they moved to Bonesborough recently.

Atalanta only started wearing a face mask after the day of unity.

Nixie and Nithe were the only ones that knew Vee was a basilisk (aside from Camila). However, the two did not know that Camilia already knew about Vee, this results in the two teenagers going to stupid lengths to try and hide it.

All the teenagers have learned how to parkour (skill varies between who with Edric being the most clumsy and Hunter having the most skill (having done it for years), though Willow, Boscha, Luz, and Atalanta are very close behind).

⬆️ They all just race each other.

⬆️ Adrian and August will join in these races to compare skills

Lilith tries her best to restore old history books/books around wild magic.

Luz memorizes animal symbolism and annoys everyone with it.

Vee has the mouth of a sailor.

Boscha joins the beast keeping track after the day of unity.

Luz, Amity, Gus, Willow, Hunter, Atalanta, Vee, Boscha, Mattolomule, Amelie, Skara, Celine, Barcus, Jerbo, and Viney (along with Edric and Emira on some occasions) make up the ‘Hexside Squad’.

⬆️ Skara and Viney become a part of the squad much later than everyone else

⬆️ They also get into so many shenanigans.

⬆️ No one allows each other to make self deprecating jokes about themselves, they will get a bunch of reassurance/logical arguments.

Lilith is really good at gardening

Skara’s violin playing sounds similar to Lindsey Stirling

⬆️ They’ve also tried to get everyone in the group to at least play one instrument in order to start a band.

Viney is a great dancer.

Also, the town of Gravesfield just kinda vibes with the witches (some shops even take snails as well as dollars).

Raine and Eda stargaze with each other on the roof of the owl house and Hooty interrupts it routinely.

Gus has attempted to start a pod cast about humans.

Adrian and Darius know how to the ‘customer service’ voice.

When they’re stressed, both August and Adrian embroider little patterns.

⬆️ This has rubbed off onto Atalanta, who embroiders their Hexside uniform.

Vitimir and Adrian are actually really good friends.

Cedric was a wild witch and helped teach Atalanta magic.

⬆️ He, along with Eda, helps teach stuff that was considered ‘wild magic’.

Some of the former coven heads (Darius, Eber, Raine, Adrian, Vitimir) volunteer at the school to help the kids.

⬆️ Osran was apart of this at one point, but he started to have issues with the kids (aka, he started to beef with the kids and went absolutely not excellent).

Celine and Barcus are great friends and often tutor each other.

Hexside Squad has a thing called ‘Honesty Hour’ where you can’t lie unless you need to (used to confess emotions).

Adrian and Atalanta can pretty much run on spite (they get it from each other)

Jerbo and Viney jokingly accuse each other of betrayal

Rewatching season 1 Roswell New Mexico and I missed Jenna, Kyle and Alex as a squad. They were fun and interesting and it would have been fun to see them get up to shenanigans in later seasons. Also the reveal of Jesse covering up Jim Valenti’s death and The reveal of Noah finding Isobel in the pod. I miss the 1st season a lot sometimes. It was so good. Louise reveal of everywhere she went water followed her on the reservation and that she died when Isobel, Max and Michael came out of the pods.

Dumbing down Liz because the writers aren't skilled enough to write around her brilliance is exactly it. Why are we constantly making the smartest characters look so stupid to facilitate the stupidest plot possible? Why are Alex and Kyle going off alone to investigate alien stuff God knows where when they're easily the most sensible people on the show and there's been at least a dozen kidnappings in 3 seasons? How have we never gotten one episode with a Liz/Kyle/Alex team-up??? The fact that the only road trip shenanigans on the show involved helping M*ria is criminal.

Yes!! Liz is smart so let her be smart! Alex and Kyle are smart, so let them be smart! Cutting Alex AND Kyle from their strategic planning meetings last season about how to come at Jones was ridiculous, but now we have them just toddling off ALONE with no check in plans made, or call tree set up, or anything and after they have BOTH been kidnapping victims?! Please. No WAT Alex Manes is allowing his team and his people to work without safety protocols for everything from storing and disseminating information, to regular check-ins, to a buddy system for going exploring/researching, to how to handle allowing new people into their circle. My mans would NEVER have allowed Isobel to trick Arturo into believing Rosa was just...raised from the dead after 10 years in some kind of religious miracle. 🙄 It’s ridiculous that characters are constantly dumbed down so the writers can do the literal least to push the characters forward and actually focus on their plots.

The fact that our 3 team human soulmates have NEVER had a scene and a team up is a crime actually. They should have been the other core group! You have the Pod Squad, and Team Human, and we have never gotten Team Human even though they should be the ones all talking and commiserating about their alien soulmates! Plus they are our three smart humans who can match Michael for brilliance! WHY are we not seeing them all working together?! Make it make sense!

Also as a side note about the kidnappings, I made a list!

Possessed Isobel kidnapped those two girls and sort of Rosa before killing all of them

Liz was kidnapped by a possessed Wyatt (which is also a sort of kidnapping of him then)

Alex kidnapped his dad and held him in the bunker

Rosa and Liz kidnapped Noah’s body from Flint

Jenna was kidnapped by...Deep Sky? Or was that supposed to have been part of that Helena/Flint/Jesse mess?

Mimi was kidnapped or possibly faked her own kidnapping but everyone else sure thought it was real

Jenna’s sister was kidnapped and forced to help Jesse/Helena

Alex was kidnapped by Jesse then double kidnapped by Helena/Flint

Michael kidnapped Jesse

Michael kidnapped Flint

Michael then surrendering to being kidnapped back by Flint and held against his will to help Alex

Kyle was technically not kidnapped because he was in a coma in a barn and Eduardo was trying to help him, but no one knew where he was, just that he was missing so he was basically kidnapped as far as anyone knew

Alex was kidnapped when he started poking around what happened to Kyle

Those racist dicks kidnapped m*ria, Rosa, and Anatsa right? And maybe Isobel was involved? I don’t remember, but they were absolutely taken from one place to another so it counts!

Does the group kidnapping m*ria from the hospital count since technically they were her friends? Oh well, Jones basically kidnapped her in her own mind so those can combine to count as 1

Also, didn’t Jones escape and they had to kidnap him and bring him back to the cave or something? I feel like they kidnapped Jones at least once.

I feel like Dallas was too? I’m not counting him pulling everyone into the mindscape, because that’s leaning more towards a hostage situation? But still.

Alex was kidnapped by the new aliens

Jones had his body kidnapped by the new aliens

Does bodysnatching count as kidnapping? Because we have the truck driver, Eduardo, and now Jenna, though to be fair Eduardo looks like the only one that they kept and held afterword. But the truckdriver was in Mexico? or something when she got taken over and had to drive to Roswell so like, still sort of kidnapping, plus the new lady in the pod could be another bodysnatching/kidnap victim

Let me know if I forgot any! But also, Jesus H Roosevelt Christ, get that writers room some new material! Or at least a timeline and some cliffsnotes on what has happened to different people because, damn.

Spoilers for Roswell New Mexico 3x01! (Idk how to do the line thing or whatever so scroll really fast I guess?)

I am running on 4h sleep (honestly not that bad as I thought it'd be) and here are my thoughts on 3x01 (I haven't rewatch it yet so my memory may be a bit blurry)

Max is so dramatic and I love it (I aspire to write on a typewriter some dramatic letters one day)

The pod squad is happy (well mostly but I love Michael and Isobel teaming up on Max and discussing their love lives)

The bus scene was so cute! Michael fixing his hair! Alex kissing a guy in front of his dad's statue! Still not over the forlex height difference

Liz braking the rules was amazing to see, especially heath's reaction to it

I am so excited for delmanes! And the visions? Who is dying? (Thanks to everyone on discord, I am now going with the theory that it's Maria, but I also like the empty coffin one) and Alex saying they are covering up a murder?! Big pll vibes if you ask me 😆

Really liked the forlex scenes we got. But I am so confused? Did they break up? Cause is saw on one of @bisexualalienblast post that Forrest was going on a book tour, so I am so confused about what Alex is going to do? (I like the spy thing, but as Kyle said, being alone is lonely or something like that)

I love Kyle 😍 he is trying to help everyone, Maria Isobel, Alex.

Pod squad made me emotial, again. Michael saying he was happy 😭😭

Do you think Jones knows about Michael/Alex being in love or do you think he's about to find out about them? Also does Jones want the Lockhart Machine? I'm a bit confused by that. If he does that means this is going to connect back to Alex since he's been working with it and where Michael is Jone's son.

As far as we know, Jones still needs to physically touch someone to access their memories, and I don't think he's had a chance to leech information from Michael yet. So, unless he's stumbled about the information in someone else's mind, he shouldn't be able to know.

I have no clue what he wants. Since he's so adamant about accessing a memory about Maria's grandmother Patricia from the same day in 1969 the Lockhart Machine was activated for the first time, I assume, it is linked to the machine somehow tho.

(Not sure how Maria, who certainly wasn't alive in 1969, would be able to access a memory of her deceased grandmother, but crazier things have happened on this show without further explanation, guess we'll see how she's supposed to know).

And yes, I expect Jones to link it back to Deep Sky/Alex somehow. We know that Alex is supposed to have a scene with Max this season, but Max in his pod is currently AWOL, and it'll probably take a while for him to return to the land of the living.

I suspect the scene will actually be Alex and Jones, but Alex assumes it's Max because the dumbass squad has still not figured out how to keep everyone updated on the latest alien shenanigans in the group chat. Alex doesn't even know that Jones exists yet (unless someone told him off-screen, but on screen it's never been mentioned to Alex).

Maybe it'll happen at the end of 3x08, and that's why Michael's going to be worried about Alex in 3x09, bc Jones did something to Alex? They better don't put Alex in a coma, too... 😒

Michael won't let Jones get away with hurting Alex tho. I'm ready to see Flame Boy go bonkers over protecting his bf.

Overall, I loved Season 3 of Roswell New Mexico. (Spoilers ahead!)

I enjoyed the main season plot. I truly feared Save Max v 2.0 would be really boring. But it actually turned out far better than I anticipated. In no small part because Jones was such a well done antagonist. The slow reveal of who he truly was combined with an actual bodyswap plotline? (Which I crazily suggested before the start of the season in this post but didn’t anticipate them actually doing.). Add in all the further information about the aliens and the history of Oasis? Yeah, I’m a sucker for all the alien crap. Not gonna deny it, it truly made the season for me. That actually includes all the technobabble other fans clearly had no patience for. (I can’t help it, I watched a lot of old sci-fi growing up and have retained a fondness for technobabble.)

On top of that, there were so many great friendship/family/found family feels! I’m not even sure I can pinpoint a favorite scene. Michael and Rosa? Rosa and Liz? Kyle and Rosa? Pod Squad? Michael and Kyle? Kyle and Max? Alex and Max finally getting a scene together? Like… so many scenes. It brought me so much happiness to finally see the forming of the found family I associate with the other versions of Roswell truly brought to life in this version. I’ve been waiting for it for two seasons, and this season it was like - there you are.

I was dubious of the addition of Dallas at first. I mean, he wasn’t exactly Adam (Roswell High alien character), and I was kind of hoping to see an Adam plotline. But, his character works well when mixed with the other characters, probably in part because he is in many ways a point of calmness and thoughtfulness among a bunch of really high strung characters with a tendency to jump the gun. (Kyle has his own version of calmness, but he’s also capable of spontaneous dramatics like randomly attempting to break and enter the cabin in season one.) I also genuinely enjoyed Dallas’s friendship with Heath, and their backstory. See if I continue to hold such high regards for his character in season 4.

Echo and Malex both had some amazing scenes this season. Yes, romantic declarations wise, but also just… communicating with each other. Moving towards healthy committed relationships with one another. I truly hope that will continue through season 4. (I’ll spare you my committed relationships aren’t boring rant… for now…) I for one would love a scene in season 4 where Rosa and/or Arturo poke at Echo about getting married. Also would love it if Echo decides the best escape from this is to throw Malex under the bus with a “They’ve been together longer. They should get married first.”

Can I just say that I really appreciated the fact Liz knew from kissing Jones that it wasn’t Max? Cuz it always bothered me in bodyswap plots when the romantic partner failed to realize something was wrong when they kissed. (Still can’t believe we got a legitimate bodyswap plot.)

And Alex taking off the bandana from Michael’s hand and them then walking down the street hand in hand? That is the kind of shit I read fics for. Having it on screen was just… damn.

Saving my criticism for a different post, so I’ll just end with my Season 4 wishlist:

The answer to who N38 was and what he downloaded to Jim Valenti’s brain.

Another thing I want for Malex aside from Michael finally talking to his family about his feelings for Alex is him bringing Alex into pod squad/alien shenanigans. We saw Alex sharing everything on his end about Project Shepherd and his family's involvement in alien hunting, but Alex wasn't looped into the Noah stuff at the end of s1 or anything in s2 from Michael. He only saw the pods because he went looking for Michael in 2x03. Give me more of Michael embracing his alien identity in front of Alex please. And if the pod squad is dealing with Mr. Jones, I want confirmation that Michael is actually keeping Alex informed this time. I don't want to wonder what Alex knows when and from whom.

I think the writers kept Alex out of the pod squad in terms of getting info for a reason. Max for instance knows about Deep Sky/the symbol from Jesse/Charlie/Jenna but Alex doesn't know what the symbol relates to and when he saw the farm/twin guy's ring he doesn't connect the dots later 'cause he doesn't know about Deep Sky yet (or noticed Forrest's Deep Sky ring). Btw, I understand if writers want to go in a different direction for Forrest but if viewers can pick up on this ring through out all of season 2, it kind of seems too late to try and reverse Forrest being a part of Deep Sky just sayin'.

I absolutely agree nonnie, I also want Alex to see Michael's powers more and also his engineering skills but I also want Michael to see Alex in his field as well, as a code breaker/computer wiz because he still hasn't yet. I'd really like Michael to look impressed with Alex and vice versa. I also really want Michael's siblings to be acknowledging Malex if/when they become a couple considering Miluca got to have it first (ugh) when the pod squad was in the Wild Pony in 2x07 commenting on Michael's "heart eyes" for Maria... again, neither Isobel or Max even mentioning Alex as if he doesn't exist. Really interesting choice there writers.

I don't know if they're going to include Alex so much with Mr. Jones storyline, just because we keep hearing how Alex is going to be off on his own "personal journey". So I think for Alex, his story is mostly going to be Deep Sky, whereas the pod squad will be dealing with Max's clone. Maybe the two storylines will join at some point? I'd be into that.

We have fantastic writers and other creators in the Roswell, New Mexico. Here are some prompts for stories (or other creations), that I'd love to see.

PROMPT: 1930’s Speakeasy AU featuring injured WW1 vet Alex who now works as a singer in Maria’s speakeasy. Michael is the local bootlegger who supplies Maria’s bar. Isobel is a local socialite? Kyle local doctor? Love to see everyone else as well?

PROMPT: Mob boss AU - inspired by that new photo going around! Michael is the son of a Chicago mob boss. Michael meets and falls for college student Alex. Is Michael active in the family business? Is he trying to distance himself from the family business? Is Alex what he seems?

PROMPT: Notting Hill-inspired AU - Alex is a famous singer. Michael is the mechanic who fixes Alex’s car when it breaks down out in the desert on tour. Shenanigans ensue.

PROMPT: Kyle - Something happens to Kyle that has him near breaking point emotionally (eg Sheriff Valenti gets seriously hurt on the job or something else). It makes everyone realise just how much Kyle has been there for all of them in some way when they needed it and they all return that support in his time of need.

PROMPT: Name Change - At some point in the future our fav couples get hitched. Plot twist - not only does Alex take Michael’s last name (that’s canon at this point, right?) but Max takes Liz’s. Make it so sweet I have to book a dentists appointment.

PROMPT: Sports AU - Michael and Alex are both on the same college hockey team. Alex looses his leg in an accident, ending his playing career. Fast forward 5 years, Alex gets a job as an IT/Web consultant for the same NHL team that Michael now plays for.

PROMPT: Space Pirates AU - Michael is a run away royal turned space pirate/resistance fighter. Alex is the military officer sent to capture him. #Malex If you want to throw Kyle in, happy for a #Mylex version as well. (Seriously, how do we not have more space pirate fics in a show about aliens!!)

PROMPT: Polyamory - The number three plays an important part in the show - 3 pod squad, 3 axes on the star map to Antar etc. What if the default relationship group on Antar is also 3 people? Look at how Michael spirals when cut off from Max and Isobel? Could it explain why Michael and Alex have so much trouble staying together - they are missing their third? Could this be why the bond between Max and Liz wasn’t strong enough to keep her in Roswell - they were missing their third? Maybe “outdated binary of sexuality” has multiple meanings? Give me Mylex, give me Kaliz, give me both? Or give me something unexpected?

Ok y’all, here we go. Finally we are an official couple! Malex for the win!! (Other things happened, but ya know. Priorities.) I was very happy overall with the progress our boys have made. And as much as I’ve enjoyed this season, I’m glad we’ve had a bit of a time jump. Even if I think it’s only been a few days. I was pretty sure that Kyle and Max would already be up and about. It would have taken too much of an episode to deal with bringing Max out of the pod and Kyle waking up from his coma. Do I feel a little short changed? Yeah. But I get it. There’s only 13 episodes and there is a lot that we have to get to before the finale. So on that note, I’m gonna dive right in. Care to join me?

You go Nora with your badass self killing all those clones. (I mean harsh, but hopefully they were just vessels and had no consciousness to speak of.) And Jones being his crazy dictator self killing that scientist was super harsh. And can we for the love of God get Lucky away from him!?!?!?! He is the goodest boi! He deserves better.

Go on science Liz. I don’t understand half of what she said, but I believe it. And I love how badass she is when she sciences. And there we get our first glimpse of Malex goodness, “Me and Alex are working on the Lockhart machine.” Because of course they are. Because their brilliance only intensifies when they work together. Loved Isobel’s gross face when Liz talks about Noah’s spores. And here’s where we get the Heath story taking off. Max is not gonna like this one!

Ok, Deep Sky doctor lady. I really dig your hair, but do you know who you’re talking to here? Kyle is the premiere alien doctor on this planet. He probably knows more about weird biology than you’ll ever learn. Listen to my boy! And Kyle honey, you are completely justified in your righteous indignation. And you are correct in that no one is more qualified in top-secret ET shenanigans than you baby. (I really need to figure out how to use that line in real life. It’s like the best thing he’s ever said.) I still don’t know whether or not to trust Eduardo. I want to, but I’m still not sure what he’s all about.

I love how dedicated Isobel is. She’s downright obsessed and I love this side of her. And her cockblocking Delmanes was so funny all episode. I also really love that Greg is fully involved now. The Pod Squad needs all the allies they can get at this point.

That phone call almost made me cry. They look so incredibly happy to just be together. I knew as soon as Alex said he wouldn’t forget their date that it wouldn’t happen, but still. Just the fact that they are both ready for that step is amazing. They have both grown so much. I’m just so happy to see them so happy. It was truly amazing. And I agree with Michael. Alex needs to talk codey more often!

It was totally cute that Max had a get Liz playlist, but does he know what the song The Way is about? It’s not exactly romantic.

Heath, you’re in trouble now!

Delmanes are so cute! Isobel is so adorable when she is flustered by a pretty girl!. I will admit though, that I really wish Anatsa hadn’t slept with Max. I mean these guys tend to be a little too close sometimes. But, you know, that seems to be the way this show is going to roll. Blame it on Carina’s lingering messes from the last two seasons and move on.

Of course Alex would manifest Nora. Despite his growth, he still has a lot of guilt over her death and his father’s role in it. I love that Michael is his focus. Alex’s love for Michael will always be the guiding factor in everything he does. He wants more than anything to make sure that Michael has a good life. And I think he’s finally learned that his presence in Michael’s life is what makes it good. I love these two dumbos! (said lovingly) They make me so happy!!

Come on Max. Tell Liz how you not only kept her tapes, but you would listen to them in the desert while crying and missing her! These two are the real dumbos in this show. (said not so lovingly)

I love how powerful Isobel’s become. And that was way cool the way she pulled that pod out of the lake. I’ve really loved her journey this season. And Maria was right, that camp was really beautiful.

I just don’t know if we can trust Eduardo yet! He says all the right things, but he just seems too good to be true! I hope my misgivings are wrong. I really want Kyle and Alex both to have someone who will be a good father figure. They both deserve it.

You know what would have been an awesome twist? If Jesse had shown up when Alex saw the project shepherd tech in Nora’s machine.

I love how Michael just wants to take care of Alex. Lovingly breaking into his boyfriend’s house. What a romantic.

You know what Maria? Get it girl! I think Delmanes is both sexy and adorable. I am ok with them being together!

I love that Kyle is so determined to do the right thing. He has really grown to care about all the aliens. He just wants to do the right thing and I love him for it. He is proving every day that he is the best member of the Valenti family. I’m so proud of my baby boy!

And now we’re getting down to business with Echo. They both have made mistakes and they both have admitted as such, but it still surprises me that Liz cannot see why Max is so scared of his secrets getting out. (Am I really taking Max’s side in something? What is wrong with this picture?) Also, she is so determined to believe the best of Heath that she doesn’t want to see what’s glaringly obvious. I saw this coming like five episodes ago. Just saying.

If Vlamis doesn’t make that shirt part of his next merch drop, I will scream. I would wear the heck out of that shirt! And Eduardo’s face when Michael is standing in his office was the best! And bragging about how smart his boo is! Michael just adores his brilliant hacker boyfriend!

Admittedly, yoda Maria is getting a little old. But I am glad that Maria and Isobel are friends now. They really compliment each other so well. And I loved how Isobel took drinks out of Greg’s hand all ep.

My sweet Alex! I love him so much. Pushing himself so hard to try to help Michael. It’s all about Michael. His capacity to love is so huge. And then Michaell comes to the rescue. He’s always got him. That’s the kind of grand declaration that we need in our lives. The way that Alex grabbed onto Michael’s shirt was everything. They just bring so much joy to my soul.

Isobel and Anaste are cute, but my Kybel heart still beats strong. Also, I still think she’s an alien or something. I have decided to just not trust anyone new.

Michael listening to Alex, comforting him, and admitting he’s had the same fears was beautiful. I love how strong he is now. He’s really putting himself out there to be there for the people that matter the most. And that Sander’s story was so sweet. Of course that would be the perfect date for these two. And the fact that they worked together perfectly to take out the evil PS part and put the machine back together the way it was meant to be was such a great metaphor for their relationship. I can’t believe we are getting so much goodness right now. We are truly blessed.

Still making me take Max’s side Liz. You really are letting me down. Oh wait, helping Michael be less Michael. Yep, Max made me remember why I hate him. Never mind.

So Dallas is an alien. (At least somebody new is!) Not who I thought it would be though. And since we saw him in one of the s4 bts pics, then we know he’s probably sticking around. I am intrigued. And now we know what Heath’s been up to. I guess he’s supposed to be a not so bad guy since he’s trying to help his best friend. But you hurt my Kyle dude. There’s really no coming back from that.

I am still pleased with 99% of this season. We’re coming down to the wire now. I just hope for more and more goodness with every episode. Even if we have to have another episode without Alex, I am expecting there to be some mentions of him by Michael. This season has made me so so happy. I can’t believe we are living in a time when Malex is together and building a beautiful relationship that will stand the test of time. We are a blessed people. And I cannot wait for more! Sky Factory Android Shenanigans is giving me so many ideas?

That super cliché sci-fi AU where Michael’s an android on the run (because reasons???) and he ends up on one backwater planet/colony somewhere. Parts on the fritz thanks to a run in with some black ops/assassination squad and he needs repairs but doesn’t know who to trust?

Broadcasts reporting him as, idk, malfunctioning and the whatnot and a danger to the public – do not approach or engage – and call the authorities if you see this unit.

(Unit, like he’s not a person anymore, had his autonomy stripped away along with his humanity and goddamn him for being stupid enough to trust whatever organization he signed up for that got him killed, turned him into this and fucked him over again with all the secrets it was keeping he hadn’t even guessed at before stumbling on them, hence the android on the run part of things? But yes.)

And then he overhears someone talking about this lunatic living on the fringes of whatever settlement he’s come to. Like something out of the true crime stories he used to follow when he was a kid – or is that just another implanted memory?

Shady as hell and rife with con-men and thieves and worse, perfect place to hide out for a while until his stupid body shuts down and he dies for real out here.

Half-blind most days because that shot to the head and it acts up at the worst times. Almost gets him killed a few times when some of those thieves and worse ambush him in an alley and it’s sheer luck he manages to get out of it without suffering more damage.

Anyway, anyway, he hears about this lunatic who’s supposed to be some kind of mechanical genius, right? Doesn’t run a real shop, lives out by the main scrapyard like a weirdo. People bring their busted machines and gadgets and the whatnots to him and he fixes them up nice and pretty-ish. (Cheaper than the officially licensed technicians near the spaceport and a hell of a lot more discreet to boot.)

So.

Michael makes his way there, half-convinced he’s walking into a trap but it’s take that risk or end up being a pile of spare parts in the guy’s scrapyard anyway, right?

And at first the asshole doesn’t even respond when Michael knocks on his door, pretends he’s not home or whatever and Michael’s just.

At the end of his rope and angry and defeated and he starts yelling at the fucker until his vocalizer glitches out, and that’s when the door snaps open, sending Michael tumbling inside where he lands on his face because his everything is fucked up and he doesn’t react fast enough.

Looks up to see someone staring down at him, implants and augments like whoa because no human has an eye that glows red unless it’s in one of those old horror holovids.

“What do you want?

Surly bastard, which lines up with the things Michael overheard before.

Loner who doesn’t really gt left alone because people need things, don’t they, and there’s not a lot of money coming into a place like this. Old mining planet/colony where the companies pulled their operations out when the mines ran dry and only the worst kind of people come by anymore.

The few decent people left behind too poor to relocate, so it’s a shitshow and as someone with the skills to he has he gets visitors more often than he’d care for. (Customers or someone hoping to take what he has any way they have to, which explains the weapon in his hand and Michael’s almost to point he’d just let the fucker shoot him to be done with it, but.)

He stands up, servos and whatever else he’s made of these days creaking and groaning and this little flash of light that may be actual sparks coming off him and he sees the guy’s grimace at how bad off he is.

Like Jesus, if he wasn’t what he was Michael knows someone would have scrapped him a few planets back, but whatever.

The guy – Ryan, of course it’s Ryan – flips the lights on and they get a good look at one another.

Michael’s headed for a full-system shutdown and Ryan?

Looks like he’s been through some shit. Enough augments and implants that the legal system would be hard-put classifying him as human anymore, leaning past cyborg and dangerously close to being an android himself like some of those soldiers Michael’s seen who got caught up in the outer worlds skirmishes a few years back.

A lot of them look cobbled together from whatever parts he could find out here, which makes sense if the guy’s here of all places. (People don’t end up somewhere like here if they have resources to call on, you know? And no one ends up somewhere like here if they’re not in some kind of trouble, so. Yeah.)

They regard each for a long, long time.

Michael knows Ryan recognizes him, but he’s too tired to bother running – been doing too much of that as it is – and he wouldn’t get far in the shape he’s in if he tried

Last resort and the way that goes and Ryan sighs, gesturing for Michael to follow him and he does because what else is he going to do?

Ryan fixes him up, this long on-going process that takes a long damn time because Michael’s so busted up. Has this little helper bot he’s built out of old construction bots or something because its still sporting that distinct yellow paint job, little black and white stripe along its side.

Beeps and chirps and boops whenever Ryan asks it to bring him this tool or that, dig through the bins along one wall for parts or whatever. Hovers along just behind him when they’re not in the workshop/lab loyal little helper and kind of cute in a weird kind of way.

Ryan calls it E.D.G.A.R. and when Michael asks what the acronym stands for Ryan shrugs because hell if he knows, he just thought it was appropriate, which what does that even mean???

Ryan and E.D.G.A.R. dig through the bits and pieces he has stashed in his workshop/lab/lab, cannibalize worker androids – makes and models who didn’t start out as humans like Michael did – for some of it. Searches through the scrapyard to find parts he can modify for the rest.

Once he gets Michael functioning to a high enough level he can lend a hand Michael’s out there too, digging through piles of appliances and machinery and trying not to look too hard at the scattered android parts and chassis tossed in there too. (Some look too human, synthetic flesh torn and weathered from being unprotected from the elements for who know how long)

They don’t really get friendly, the two of them, but Ryan forgets to play the curmudgeon the longer he works at fixing Michael up.

Doesn’t ask who Michael is or how he ended up here, doesn’t seem like he’s waiting on the authorities to come claim him either.

Kind of a confusing time for them both because it’s clear Ryan’s got his own secrets, you know?

More than just some guy who picked up what he knows ‘along the way’, no.

There’s an order to his workshop/lab/lab Michael recognizes from the days right after those fuckers turned him into a machine, the way he works.

Meticulous as hell and so precise and just. More care than any of the hacks Michael’s gone to since he’s been on the run.

And then!

And then there’s – Michael doesn’t know when the shift happens but he bitches about something and Ryan laughs, quiet little huff of air and this tell-tale quirk to his mouth, and he gives Michael this. This look.

Something thoughtful to it he doesn’t really understand, can’t fucking compute, but who cares, right? Because Ryan’s less of a bastard after that, they get along better and Michael stops worrying Ryan’s just waiting for the right moment to turn him in, thinks his luck might be changing on him – so of course that’s when things go to shit.

Someone must have seen Michael before, recognized him and figured out he went to Ryan for help because the people chasing Michael?

They find him.

Assassination squad(s) and both of them unprepared for it and Ryan gets hit, gets hit bad.

More machine than man, but there’s still enough squishy human left to him that a bullet/energy weapon shot in the right place will kill him, you know? (Besides, all those augments and implants are hooked up to his squishy human parts in amazingly delicate ways and it’s real fucking easy to use that against someone if you know how.)

Michael doesn’t get away unscathed himself, but of the two of them he’s far more functional. And even though Ryan didn’t have the right parts and components to bring him up to factory specs again, so to speak, he did a damn good job with what he had on hand, you know?

There’s also the fact that the people who made Michael what he is now didn’t expect him to turn on them, thought they had a nice loyal dog in their hands and they made a mistake giving him the teeth and claws they did. All these built-in weapons because he’s a prototype, isn’t he.

New war machine to sell to the highest bidder and better than all those soulless robots people were using before because there’s a human mind in there capable of making the kind of decisions and choices and whatever else a simple computer program or AI could ever hope to. (Real fucking close to the complex sort of AI they’d need for that, but not close enough to satisfy the corporations or military forces who would commission them.)

So.

Michael gets them out of there, follows E.D.G.A.R. to this ship Ryan’s got hidden away – looks like shit but Ryan – stubbornly hanging on – insists it’ll get them to safety, just don’t fly them into the sun or a fucking planet, for Christ’s sake.

Michael gets Ryan into the medbay which – surprise, surprise – looks like a smaller version of Ryan’s workshop/lab/ than a medbay, but who cares at this point.

Hooks him up to machines to keep him alive until he can give him proper medical care and gets them away from any pursuers.

When he goes back down to check on Ryan it’s to find the asshole directing E.D.G.A.R. to open up this pod on the wall. (Looks more like a casket.)

Human shaped and something about it unsettles Michael who demands to know what’s going on, because Ryan shouldn’t be doing what’s he’s doing.

Seriously injured and lost a lot of blood and any normal human would be dead by this point, and Ryan.

He sighs, gives Michael this look because they both know he’s not going to get better from his injuries, you know? Squishy human parts all fucked up and augments and implants malfunctioning worse than Michael had been when he went to Ryan.

Only a matter of time and Ryan knew something like this would happen one day – all the things Michael was careful not to ask Ryan the same way Ryan didn’t ask Michael because secrets. (And Plot Reasons, but c’mon, you know how this works by now.)

E.D.G.A.R. cracks the pod/casket open and oh, wow, surprise, surprise there’s an android body inside it.

Looks a hell of a lot like Michael’s, but this one is a little bigger, bulkier. Looks like an older version, one that was modeled more after the construction androids, used for heavy labor and the whatnot. No synthetic flesh cover its frame, all powered down and waiting and -

“Don’t do this,” Michael says, because Ryan thinks he knows what he’s doing but he doesn’t.

He doesn’t.

(Michael doesn’t know what else they can do, but this - there has to be another way.)

Ryan gives Michael this sad little smile and it’s horrifying because internal bleeding and everything else, and he’s just.

“Michael,” he says, and he sounds so tired. “Why do you think I knew how to repair you?”

Because Ryan didn’t end up in some backwater planet/colony by accident, you know?

Doesn’t know the things he does because he read about it somewhere or had a job working in a goddamned repair shop on one of the inner worlds.

None of those easy little lies Michael kept telling himself, no.

Ryan used to work for this corporation, big on advancing science and all that bullshit that had major funding provided by the military and so on and so forth. People real interested in cutting down on human bloodshed and what better way than to create machines to do it for them?

Things went wrong along the way, and they got desperate as project after project failed to live up to expectation. (Some key component missing and it wasn’t until someone decided morals and ethics were oh so troublesome they made any real headway.)

People like Michael and accidents here and there, soldiers offer a second chance and there’s an experimental program that hasn’t been revealed to the public. Dangerous, of course, but -

Some people got a choice in the matter, sold their souls for that second chance. Others like Michael never had that luxury.

And Ryan, oh. He was part of that, wasn’t he.

Designed the androids because the science of it all, but he never expected things would lead where they did.

Got to watch as his creations were used in the worst possible ways, saw the early days where human brains couldn’t cope with the transfer progress. Breadth and depth of what makes a human mind (soul?) shoved into a computerized/cybernetic shell of its former self, most without warning and the fallout -

Most committed suicide, some went mad. The others had to be destroyed as they decayed.

And Ryan.

He tried to expose them, did what he could and it almost, almost worked.

But one man against a vast conglomeration fueled by greed and corruption and it almost killed him. (Should have, maybe that would have been better.)

He had a handful of augments and implants before everything went to hell to help him in his work, but afterward.

Well.

Squishy human bodies are just that, aren’t they. Get injured so badly they can’t be fixed and he ended up needing more and more until he might as well have been one of those androids he created once upon a time. (Poetic justice to it, or so he thought when he bothered to think about it at all.)

And anyway, anyway, that doesn’t matter at this point because it’s either transfer his squishy human brain-stuff into the waiting android frame or die.

Before all this, before Michael, Ryan might have chosen death. Figured it’s what he deserved for his part in things, no way he can expose the people responsible when he’s failed before, but.

Michael makes him want to try.

(Ryan knew, you see, while he was fixing Michael that the idiot would go right back out once he was done and try to do the impossible. May have drawn things out longer than he should have to prevent that from happening because he likes Michael, okay? Too much, maybe.)

This isn’t the way he saw things going, but he doesn’t want to die now. Doesn’t want to leave Michael alone to fix Ryan’s mistakes. (And maybe it’s not all on Ryan to fix, but who else is going to do it?)

So.

Michael hates it, hates it so much but he does what Ryan tells him to do. Gets him hooked up to the right machines, boots up the right programs and whatever else and watches Ryan die as he turns himself into an android.

He doesn’t know why Ryan’s doing what he’s doing, thinks it’s because he doesn’t want to just fade away into nothing, but Ryan tells him later.

Tells him everything as he’s figuring out how his new android body works, the two of them following gossip and rumors surrounding this broadcast someone’s sending out about the people responsible for making Michael what he is. Things said people are trying to shut down, shut down hard, but can never catch.

He tells him and Michael listens and it’s not easy, God is it ever not, but they come to an understanding or something like that.

Ryan didn’t know, not for the longest time and when he did he tried to do something about that, and that has to count for something.

(He saved Michael’s life or whatever the hell you’d call it when he turned up on his doorstep, and that counts for something too.)

And just.

Michael’s got his own mistakes too, okay.

So.

They figure things out, and Ryan fixes up his android body so its face looks like his human one and he maybe upgrades it, Michael laughing at him when Ryan goes on and on and on about laser hands or whatever the hell. (Ridiculous and impractical as hell, but goddamn does it sound cool.)

Also, also? Ryan doesn’t have the combat training/protocols Michael does so ~training. Partly to get him used to how his new body moves, partly because they don’t have access to adequate things at first and Michael runs him through the basics, right?

And he teaches Ryan how to compensate for it when his targeting whatevers are on the fritz and Ryan proves to be a better shot than Michael? (New ways to bring old cliches and tropes into play, is what I’m getting at here.)

Those moments where Ryan comes up against the limitations of his new body, realizes what he’s lost when he chose to become an android and Michael just being there because he’s the best person to understand what he’s going through?

The two of them becoming this amazing team over time that is an actual threat to the people after them? (And E.D.G.A.R., because Ryan is too damn fond of the bucket of bolts.)

They run into assassination squads and whatever else and finally, finally find the source of the broadcasts and of course it’s Matt and all these misfits and outcasts with grudges against the assholes after Michael and Ryan and it’s just.

Shenanigans in space as this group of supposed space pirates/smugglers/criminal types take on a corrupt corporation because reasons.

Also, yes, totally FAHC AU in space, but different ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
