I need to move out not just because my brain is going insane but also because I need complete control over my food again....I didnt start having all this stomach pain and constant acid reflux etc etc etc until I moved back in at the beginning of covid and my diet changed to whatever my mother decides. When I was on my own I ate way less meat/more veg and a more "traditional" Mediterranean food pyramid and I felt SO much better
Everyone wants to blame coffee or wine but my consumption of those hasn't changed so??? Like MAYBE it's partially age but also....I'm not that old and this is a p significant shift in a 2 yr period

omg i just got my first offer for med so i wanted to ask, do you enjoy it?
ive wanted to do it ever since i was a baby tbh (as cliche as it sounds) but only recently i’ve been having doubts 😭 do you think it’s more difficult than you expected, and do you think you’re still able to balance a good social life alongside it?
im sorry for all of the questions, you don’t have to answer them if you don’t want to but i’m just curious and scared 😭
Do you want me to be brutally honest? 😂
Nah im jk I really do enjoy it. I don’t like when I used to ask med students for advice and ask how they were finding it and they used to deter me from doing it and tell me not to and to run whilst I could etc.. There’s no point me saying that because if someone wants to do it they will and they absolutely should. I’m sure you already know how demanding it is as you would’ve looked into it before you applied of course. Me personally, I love it especially when we get to go to the hospital and help out too because there’s really nothing better than seeing someone’s face light up in hope they’re gonna be listened to and taken care of. You are gonna come across some pretty annoying/nasty doctors tho who genuinely seem like they’d rather do anything else than their job but don’t let them discourage you please, they may even discriminate or not take u serious as ur a student still but u gotta have patience.
I’m only in my first year but there is a shit ton of work like I thought A levels were bad but this is next level 😭😭 On the topic of social life I had no problem going out every weekend but I’m not going to lie that’s not what you should be doing at all 💀 I definitely underestimated how much more work I have to put in and it’s showing as I feel I’m so behind and I almost failed the first year from lack of focus. So please keep that in mind and do not let the freedom go to ur head yeah? It’s absolutely more than okay to enjoy yourself though just in small quantities ❤️😏 I Hope I’ve not stressed you out and I’m sorry for the essay but I’m sure you’re going to love it ❤️❤️❤️❤️

five years too late let’s analyze this. the commentary has gotten me back into gravity falls reigniting thoughts and insights i came to years ago
i love everything about this commentary in general it hits the points of humor, genuine analysis of the characters, but most of all im so glad hirsch addressed that the droid not detecting any fear from dipper here doesnt make any scientific sense because that was a massive CinemaSins moment for me
IDK the fact that dipper can fucking stand after an airship crash because theres a bigger threat at hand is literally one of the defining capabilities owed to adrenaline lol...... IM SORRY im a biopsychology student if i dont point that out iwill seethe and die because that was just . its a grudge ive held for a long time about this episode but didnt rant about because it was something so minor and i’m sure nobody would care.
i was 13 when this episode came out and i’m almost 19 now, i had a special interest in biology and i still do but now i’m actually having college classes in biopsychology so i can give my arguments more oomph now. and i have to say, now that i know more about the brain and autonomic nervous system the more this scene bugs me, if that was even possible. and it says a lot of dipper and ford’s relationship.
if dipper clearly wasnt calm before, why would he be now just because he’s put up an outwardly confident facade? before he was in the flight but now hes in the fight. my boy just rode on top of a spaceship by nothing but a magnet gun that could detach at any time if it failed and then the ship crashed, he sustained injuries, is in emotional turmoil because he thinks his uncle is Fucking Dead and the threat of a security droid that detects adrenaline is on his tail and produces a Big Fucking Gun in response to dipper saying “i hAvE a MaGNeT gUn” and hes screaming and has his teeth clenched but sure there’s no adrenaline coursing through his body in that moment i can totally believe that
when dipper asks what happened, ford says “the orb didn’t detect any chemical signs of fear, it assumed the threat was neutralized and self-disassembled” but i don’t think measuring someone’s heartbeat alone is particularly relevant in detecting ... chemical signs of fear?? they dont really tell you this shit but noradrenaline (and maybe adrenaline too if the acetylcholine from sympathetic outflow always activates the adrenal medulla??, theres two pathways) is always active in small quantities to make sure your parasympathetic nervous system doesnt slow your heart to dangerous levels on its own, regardless of your emotions. it’s just a homeostatic mechanism. your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are CONSTANTLY modulating control of your organs on a see-saw, literally with every breath you take. simply standing upright causes specialized mechanoreceptor neurons in blood vessels to signal your brain to project signals to release catecholamines via the sympathetic nervous system to constrict your blood vessels so that blood is able to reach your brain and not pool in your legs. i have a deficiency in my body’s ability to adapt to this which is why i know so much about it. if i stand up my heart races to compensate. i’m not feeling fear, my body is just adjusting—albeit grossly and incompetently lol.
but what im saying here is that the security system is flawed. it’s a cool idea to have security droids detect fear, but in practice by detecting adrenaline, and not even directly by detecting the molecule itself—it’s done in a roundabout way by reading the heartbeat, could be a recipe for false alarms. like what if someone’s on beta-blockers. that’s not really an adequate way to measure “fear”; there’s so many variables that could interfere with the measurement the farther you abstract from what you’re really trying to detect. and besides, adrenaline is NOT just a sign of fear, it’s just for preparing the body for action. i know the sympathetic nervous system and adrenaline is constantly linked with the “fight-or-flight” reaponse to a stressor, but 99.9% of the time the sympathetic nervous system is used in your life is to balance out your parasympathetic nervous system to maintain homeostatic equilibrium for mundane things.
i think detecting amygdalar activation would be more efficient in detecting fear. the amygdala sends projections to the hypothalamus which then in turn modulates the autonomic nervous systems. but the amygdala is intensely activated specifically in response to a fear-inducing stimulus (it does activate in response to other emotions but they’re mostly negative and is most activated by startle and fear), and wouldnt be highly activated by many other confounding variables like measurement of the heartbeat could be. the amygala is one of the first stops directly from external stimuli.
to show you how integrated the amygdala is as the first step in registering fear after receiving input from sensory stimuli let’s look at the auditory-amygdala connection for example
Tumblr media
see how the auditory thalamus projects to the primary auditory cortex and auditory association cortex? the cortex is where conscious awareness of what the stimuli is comes from. this is the “high road”. it goes sensing -> perception -> emotional response. but sometimes you can be startled without even processing what it is you’re sensing, like the startle response of an alarm or a phone ringing in a quiet house before you even register what it is. this goes sensing -> emotional response, without perception happening until after you’ve already felt the startle. that’s when it takes the “low road”. here’s a simplified version:
Tumblr media
even if that were the case with these droids though it’s obvious dipper is still fearful on some level here. his body language, voice, expressions all give it away. for the amygdala, aggression isnt too off from fear so it would be detected equally.
the reason this is so important is because ford uses this as evidence for why dipper is special, “i did it?” “you did it. this is what i was talking about, how many 12 year olds do you think are capable of doing what you’ve just done?”
but like....did he really? i’m not saying this to shoot dipper down or make him out to be more of a wuss, he was incredibly strong-willed here and i dont want to take that away from him because it WAS growth on his part. but the underlying psychophysiological reactions of aggression and fear shouldn’t be that different and this was a total asspull. maybe the droid was so old that it fucked up. maybe dipper being covered in grime and dirt made it harder for the droid to measure the correct heart rate through photoplethysmography (im assuming since they use a camera and are non-contact).
and in all honesty everything i just said brings into question the interpersonal healthiness of ford’s judgements, what he thinks, his expectations, and how he communicates that. in this video alex already talks about how ford is projecting onto dipper. and i think ford may be projecting his expectations for himself onto people who are not him, and the fact that it’s on dipper here makes it far more unfortunate. you realize how much this boy idolizes ford, right? how much impressions matter? dipper even tells himself before he leaves in this same episode, “all right dipper, this is your first big mission with great uncle ford. don’t mess this up.”
even though it’s unstated, the implicit message dipper is perceiving from ford based on their dynamic is: “do you have what it takes for me to be proud of you?” and to accomplish this he must be like ford, even though he’s clearly not and he knows this. he says “i don’t think have what it takes. i was tricked by bill, i was wrong about stan’s portal, heck, i can’t even operate this magnet gun right.” then, by simple chance without even knowing what he did, he activates the magnet gun and pulls out the adhesive, which immediately takes the focus away from what dipper was telling ford about his feelings of inadequacy to ford saying, “yes! dipper, you found the adhesive!”
these thoughts of dipper’s hang in the air without resolve or comment from ford. we don’t know what ford would have said. but it then becomes painfully self-evident in the scene immediately after when the droids emerge and ford tells dipper, “they’re security droids and they detect adrenaline. you simply have to not feel any fear and they won’t see you”, to which dipper replies with an exasperated (and rightful) “WHAT?”
dipper goes in a panic trying to indirectly tell his uncle that this isn’t something he can do. and he is completely right and valid to be freaked out by that full stop. that IS crazy. you can’t control your fear. you can control how you interpret that fear in your higher brain regions but the physiological changes will stick around for longer than it takes to cognitively calm down. it’s easy for me to detach from my emotions to analyze them, but being able to do this does not come naturally for everyone. even i have an irrational fear of wasps and i can’t control it by detaching myself, my body is just automatically primed to get the fuck out of there. i know it’s stupid and i know it’s irrational and isn’t helpful to get myself worked up but i literally can’t stop how my body reacts no matter how i cognitively think about it. expecting composure from dipper in a situation like this when he’s being made to consciously be aware of his anxiety is absolutely fucking insane. look what you did, placing these cruel expectations on him, now he’s afraid of being afraid! this isn’t a case where two wrongs cancel out, they just stack on top of each other.
youtube
there’s a good reason these scenes were put side by side but it seems up until now it had remained unanalyzed.
what dipper fears from ford is disappointment. not living up to his uncle’s (quite frankly badly placed) expectations for a twelve year old with anxiety. not once did ford say or subliminally communicate “i don’t expect you to be able to do what i can since you are not as experienced as i am and that’s perfectly okay, no judgements”. you don’t put a child on bike before training wheels. you don’t throw a kid into a swimming pool without giving them swimming lessons. the way ford is doing it, there’s no room for trial and error or mistakes that are an opportunity to grow and learn; instead, it’s life or death. he only seems to pride dipper on what he can do while ignoring the underlying struggles that plague him and never making it known it’s okay for dipper to fail in front of his hero and that he won’t think anything less of him for it.
and that’s why i found the ending scene for dipper and ford’s adventure in this episode to feel so.. wrong. on a scientific and social level. because by the sound of it ford focused more on what dipper had done to dismantle the droid (the droid not detecting any fear) instead of how dipper displayed love and protection for him even if he was truly afraid. what if the science was accurate and the droid detected adrenaline while dipper was confidently standing up for his uncle. would ford still be proud of him regardless?

sim I cant stop eating, Ive gained 8 kilos in the last 5 months and I dont know what to do. Im so upset about it but cant stop stuffing my face, also I feel like I have stretched my stomach and now need to eat greater quantities to feel full. Ive been away for a while and going to see my friends tomorrow and I know theyre going to think ive exploded, I feel so uncomfortable :( I didnt think it was this bad but when I weighed myself I was so shocked at how much I had actually gained...
I am so sorry things haven’t been well these last few months, Please know so many people are & have struggled with what you’re going through (including me!), but managed to overcome it. It is natural for us, as humans, to look for different forms of relief when we are struggling & unfortunately food is a really easy one to hold onto. With that said though it can be just as easy to re-train the brain to resort to ‘healthier’ habits of stress-relief.
Firstly, I know how uncomfortable you feel right now & food ends up becoming a bad cycle - you eat because you’re stressed, you then over-eat, feel bad about over-eating, so eat more. How to overcome it? One step at a time!! Forget the whole “shit I ate too much today, I need to exercise so much tomorrow or restrict tomorrow” - no. Simply start with one small ‘healthy’ habit you can do everyday that will help make you feel better & that you will do no matter how bad you feel - for me, this was things like a daily swim in the ocean or a walk in nature - it would clear my head immensely, help me feel better about yesterdays decision & most importantly, break that cycle, Also don’t restrict on food in general, just don’t.
From there, start working on 2 things - being more aware of where you are at (aka symptoms or triggers, such as stress) & actively trying to use other methods of relief. The key to re-training your brain to use ‘healthier’ methods of relief is actively doing those activities when you’re in more control and aren’t too bad. The later you leave it, the less control you feel you have & the more likely you are to revert to old ‘bad’ habits. You could try rating your stress levels for example - once you get to a 5/10 you have to practice a ‘healthy’ relief activity - e.g. going for a walk, meditating, exercising etc. Try to avoid getting any higher as the risk of you reverting to old ways only increases. Also, go figure, but try to learn other things that make you feel good, help you deal with your feelings & keep you more present.
That’s the general approach I believe works to overcome over-eating/reverting to food as a relief from other issues. However here are some more specific tips & tricks to help with things:
Get uncomfortable. Do you have a comfort eating ‘routine’ - aka do you eat/binge on certain/the same foods, eat in certain places (aka in a particular seat or spot in your home), doing certain things (aka watching TV) ? If so, stop doing them! It’s really common for the body to find relief in comfort & sometimes it’s not just the food but the whole routine that is keeping you stuck - breaking that routine & getting uncomfortable can help break the brains association of food with comfort.
Don’t focus too much on food, instead focus on how you feel. When trying to overcome food issues we often go into this obsessive mode of suddenly trying to plan every meal to be those instagram-worthy smoothie bowl, salad, green things, when in fact the less focus on food the better! Trying to be super controlled with food when you’re struggling with being uncontrolled with food just never works; restriction only makes you want to be unrestricted. Focus on eating intuitively, being social, being balanced & doing the best you can; don’t over-think it.
Don’t isolate yourself! I know it can be really hard to socialise when you feel self-conscious but it’s during those times that it’s most important to keep up socialising! The more you isolate yourself, the more you revert to emotional eating, whereas socialising helps things get back to normal & move the focus away from food, body & stress. If you’re really struggling with being self-conscious do a. little shop & find non-restrictive clothes that you feel comfortable but spicy in :)
See a therapist! I can’t express how helpful talking to a professional is about this kind of thing. They can help monitor your progress, give you more ideas for how to overcome things & most importantly get to know you personally so they can personalise methods that will work for you the best.
Spend more time in nature!! I know it sounds a little cliche but I truly believe nature is incredibly healing & really helps you feel more grounded, thus stronger, in life. I incorporate coastal walks and ocean swims almost daily in my routine & it is absolutely key to clearing my head & helping me stay on track with my goals & not reverting back to old ways.
I know this was really long but honestly I’ve been there & if I’d just focused on trying to re-train my brain instead of trying to look for the solution in food, I’d probably have overcome my issues a lot sooner so I hope this helped!! Sending so much love & hugs xxxx

TIME CRUNCH STUDYING TIPS. (BECAUSE SOME HOW IM ALWAYS LIKE THIS????? WTF)
1. TRY TO RELAX, the worst you can do for yourself is worry your time away. Take the time to calm yourself down. An hour or two at the long time, sleeping, or jotting down why your worried. What your most afraid of will help a lot. Please do take the time to make sure your in the right head space before you start studying. Check in on yourself from time to time.
take this from me who regularly spends 2 hours crying about each exam I have to study for, Seriously, If you’re stressed enough that you need to cry about it. Handle it early, You don’t need it while you’re 15 mins away from starting the exam.
Seriously, been there, done that. Its horribly, painfully awkward. Tears are flowing from your face and gosh dammit everyone’s just helpless to the salt rolling down your cheeksThink of it this way would you rather condense all your worries into one hour of INTENSE LETS JUST LET IT ALL OUT or spread across your studies while your constantly second guessing why you cant do a problem or what you’re doing wrong.
2. start with the practice midterm. Does your professor have one? DO THAT DO THAT DO THAT. if you can afford solving the problems do that. If not
Spend about 2 mins looking at the question, mentally go through the steps. THEN JUMP TO THE SOLUTIONS AND I WANT YOU TO REWRITE ALL OF IT, MEMORIZE IT.
Kant has this thing where he says for every action you should decide If you can a universal maxim about it. Same thing, see if there are any basic steps you can extrapolate from that that you can use as a UNIVERSAL HOW TO for each problem. Write that down.
If you don’t have a practice midterm, GO SEARCH FOR ONE BISCUIT,
Practice midterms are the quickest ways to figure out your weak points out are and overview the entire material being tested
You might say: NO I SHOULD SAVE IT AND SEE MY PREPARED NESS, but No bruh, love yourself, Get the panic I REALLY DONT KNOW ANYTHING out of the way first. Seriously, it’ll be better. Also, if you had that kinda time, you would’ve started WEEKS BEFORE, you have HOURS
Key terms, past exams from the same uni using class codes, professor websites, mutual friends, friendly upper class man, cross reference for similar classes with similar levels at other institutions, Secret agent spy that shit. FIGURE OUT WHAT YOUR WEAKEST POINTS ARE, DIVIDE TIME ACCORDINGLY
3.Quality over quantity, but hit everything in quick succession
But also divide importance. Do you really NEEED to know how to solve SPECIAL PROBLEM TYPE X ? You have 6 hours, bruh no,
Figure out what the general problem types, hit questions you know that will show up, Brush up the ones that you know best., SKIP SPECIAL CASES, you can gloss over them but its not a priority
4.Don’t Bother Reading the text book
Copy a few theorems and definitions, beat those into your brain, but FUCKING JUST DO PROBLEMS
You’ll build intuition
5. THROW YOUR MORALS AWAY
COPY SOLUTIONS ON HW TO PREPARE FOR AN EXAM IS NOT CHEATING
If you can’t solve a problem, copy the solution, own it, dissect it,
Like cut it up like that poor dead frog you had to desecrate in high school. Cut it until its a pile of brown mushy goo and looks nothing like a frog.
6.Power Nap
7.meditate a bit if you can. It seems stupid at first but it’ll get better with time.
8.music, I like to start with really loud and active music. (Cause im not really awake or focused at the start. A combo of KPOP (big bang,EXO, BTS, G Dragon) or Pop punk (Fall out boy) depending on how well I focus. And then gradually move into more instrumental music, like marvel OST, Harry Potter, instrumental etc.
9.cold turkey (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE for the love of god turn off your social media apps while you study YOU WILL WANT TO DISTRACT YOURSELF SO PLEASE TURN THAT OFF)
10.Please focus on the positives. Focus on the fact that you are studying rather than how much you haven’t studied enough. Learning is learning and doing less than you want is still doing something. Anything and everything your doing right now is valuable.
11.Try to have some fun. Life’s all good, grades aren’t everything. They really only matter when they hit you in the face like a throw away soccer ball, (this happens more times than I’d like to admit lmfao), your resume, and when you gotta show the rents. But after that, really not at all? Don’t let it dominate your life 24/7 they already take so much from you
12.Be happy or at least pretend to be and maybe you can attain it.
13.Keep a clock on you, its great for competitive spirit. Knowing how much time you have left to do a task MAKES You want to work faster.
14.You gain focus over time. Maybe start small, like try to focus for 15 mins and take a break for 5 mins. Then increase to 20 mins. Take a break for 10 mins. After that try working in 50 min work /10 min break intervals
15.I love watching study with me videos while I work. (Recommended youtubers: StudyTee and study quill. ITs a way to get distracted and motivated at the same time
16.Move around in your break. Take a walk, contemplate life. Seriously don’t stay in your desk. Also drink water before you start working again.
17,Don’t worry about not being able to solve a question before the midterm. What matters right now is that you learn how to do the problem. IT ONLY COUNTS WHEN ITS DURING THE MIDTERM.
Lastly, good luck, try to give yourself some sleep if you can. IF you can work through an exam with an all nighter under your belt, then that works too. But please know your limits and don’t push them. When your at the exam, divide your time well, focus on what you do. Fall back on basic routines for problems you don’t know how to do. when you exit the exam don’t poke at what you did wrong. You did what you could given your time crunch. Please focus on letting it go. You were awesome! You did the impossible! And I’m proud of you.
BEST OF LUCK EVERYONE <3

6 days. im going bonkers. ive spent the day cleaning my online presence. things like my email, photos, calendar, files etc. decluttering digitally. its so soothing. I go into this flow when im doing it. everything looking pretty good.
time feels extra slow right now. its as if everything is moving in slow motion.
I don't have any carts left, I don't plan on getting any more either. they’re just too expensive. I can't justify spending 30-50 bucks on each one. especially when I could just get an ounce of flower for a hundred.
I keep checking the calendar. staring at July 25th.
its been raining a lot lately.
I really don't have much more to say honestly. I mean I do, its just still tangled in my head.
ive been trying to take things more slowly. like not consuming so much, quality over quantity type shit. for example, if I listen to a song, I should absorb it entirely. I should look at the lyrics, the artist, the genre. ir if im listening to a podcast, I should know about the hosts, its reputation etc. or if I'm going to make something out of clay, instead of rushing through the experience just so I can get a ‘finished product’ I should instead enjoy the process, learn as much as I can while doing it, and not focus on the finished product so much. I guess the point is that I want to give things my all.
I was watching this video . it reminded me of stoic texts. and buddhism. I mean I guess it is similar to buddhism in a way. it helped me think about taking things more slow. I liked this one part where he mentioned to not let our emotions make decisions for us. If something small and inconvenient happened, I shouldn't let it dictate my mood for the rest of the day. I think thats what he was saying.
I don't want to be sober right now.

How to create a kickass link-building strategy for local SEO
Link-building is a tried and tested SEO tactic, and although there are a number of dubious ways to go about it, at base developing a strong link-building strategy is a smart and very necessary way to get your site ranked above your competitors.
This is particularly true of local SEO, where a few savvy tactics for building links and relationships with other local businesses can give you a huge visibility boost in local search.
According to the 2017 Local Search Ranking Factors, inbound links are the most important ranking signal.
But if you’ve run through all the usual methods of getting inbound links, what can you do to give your site – or your client’s site – a leg up in search?
At Brighton SEO last Friday, master of local SEO Greg Grifford shared some “righteous” tips for a kickass link-building strategy, in his signature flurry of slides and movie references – this time to 80s movies.
How link-building differs in local SEO
With local small businesses, said Gifford, you have to think about links in something other than pure numbers. Which is not to say that quantity doesn’t help – but it’s about the number of different sites which link to you, not the sheer number of links you have full stop.
With local SEO, all local links are relevant if they’re in the same geographical area as you. Even those crappy little church or youth group websites with a site design from the 1990s? Yes, especially those – in the world of local SEO, local relevance supersedes quality. While a link from a low-quality, low-authority website is a bad idea in all other contexts, local SEO is the one time that you can get away with it; in fact, these websites are your secret weapon.
With local SEO, all local links are relevant – if they’re local, it doesn’t matter if the business is unrelated @GregGifford #BrightonSEO pic.twitter.com/mDxmZOlAfM
— Search Engine Watch (@sewatch) September 15, 2017
Gifford also explained that local links are hard to reverse-engineer. If your competitors don’t understand local, they won’t see the value of these links – and even if they do, good relationships will allow you to score links that your competitors might not be able to get.
“It’s all about real-world relationships,” he said.
And once you have these relationships in place, you can get a ton of local links for less time and effort than it would take you to get a single link from a site with high domain authority.
So how should you go about building local relationships to get links? Gifford explained that there are five main ways to gain local links back to your business:
Get local sponsorships
Donate time or volunteer
Get involved in your local community
Share truly useful information
Be creative in the hopes of scoring a random mention
Practical ways to get local links
These five basic ways of getting local links encompass dozens of different methods that you can use to build relationships and improve your standing in local search.
Here is just a sample of the huge list of ideas that Gifford ran through in his presentation:
Local meetups
Go to meetup.com and scout around for local meetups. A lot of local meetups don’t have a permanent location, which gives you an opportunity to offer your business as a permanent meeting venue. Or you can sponsor the event, make a small investment to buy food and drink for its members, and get a killer local link in return.
Local directories
Find local directories that are relevant to the business you’re working with. Gifford emphasized that these should not be huge, generic directories with names like “xyzdirectory.com”, but genuine local listings where you can provide useful information.
Local review sites
These are easier to get onto than bigger review websites, and with huge amounts of hyperlocal relevance.
Event sponsorships
Similar to sponsoring a local meetup, a relatively small investment can get you a great link in return. Event sponsorships will normally include your logo, but make sure that they also link back to your site.
Local blogs & newspapers
Local bloggers are hungry to find information to put on their blogs; you can donate time and information to them, and get a killer blog post and link out of the equation. The same is true of local newspapers, who are often stretched for content for their digital editions and might appreciate a tip or feature opportunity about a locally relevant business.
Local charities
Local charities are another way to get involved with the community and give back to it – plus, it’s great for your image. By the same token, you also can donate to local food banks or shelters, and be listed as a donor or sponsor on their website.
Local business associations
Much like local directories, it’s very easy to get listed by a local business association, such as a local bar dealer’s association – make sure there’s a link.
Local schools
These are great if you’re on the Board of Directors, or if your child or your client’s child is at that school. Again, getting involved in a local school is a good way to give back to the community at the same time as raising your local profile and improving your local links (both the SEO and the relationship kind).
Ethnic business directories
If you’re a member of a particular ethnic community who runs a local business, you can list your business on an ethnic business directory, which is great for grabbing the attention – and custom – of everyone in that community.
Of course, it goes without saying that you should only do this if it genuinely does apply to your business.
Gifford’s presentation contained even more ingenious ideas for local links than I’ve listed here, including local guides, art festivals and calendar pages; you can find the full list on his Slideshare of the presentation.
Gifford advises creating a spreadsheet with all your link opportunities, including what it will cost or the time it will take you. Make sure you have all of the relevant contact details, so that when it comes time to get the link, you can just go and get it. Then present that to your client, or if you’re not working on behalf of a client, to whichever individual whose buy-in you need in order to pursue a link-building strategy.
In fact, Gifford has even put together a pre-made spreadsheet ready for you to fill in, and you can download it here: bit.ly/badass-link-worksheet
Decide what links to go after, and go and get them; then, after three months, wipe the spreadsheet and repeat the process.
Some important points to bear in mind
So, now you’re all set to go out and gather a cornucopia of local links, all pointing right at your business, right? Well, here are a few points to bear in mind first.
A lot of times, the people you approach won’t know what SEO is, or even what digital is. So be careful about how you go about asking for a link; don’t mention links or SEO right off the bat. Instead, focus on the value that will be added for their customers. “This is not about the link; this is about the value that you can provide,” said Gifford.
Once again, for the people at the back: it’s about building up long-term, valuable relationships which provide benefit to you and to the local community. When it comes to local SEO, these relationships and the links that you can get will be worth more than any links from big, hefty high-domain-authority (but locally irrelevant) websites.
Or in Gifford’s words: “Forget about the big PR link shit. Go really hard after small, local links.”
