Okay so I'm thinking about The Nine Realms (for obvious reasons lol) and I think I heard or saw somewhere (this is totally not my original idea, but I don't remember where I got it) someone saying that it would make so much more sense and be so much better if TNR actuallyl took place ON New Berk years later and w the new kids discovering dragons and the hidden world due to their proximity w it.
I think this is SUCH an awesome idea and would honestly be so much better because it would give the show much stronger ties to the orginal series (imo) and open it up for a lot of cool references and callbacks that don't make sense. Why is there an arrowhead or wtv in the Hidden World w the strike class symbol on it? Why is Hiccup's diary in the Hidden World?? WTF?? They're not, they're hidden somewhere on New Berk.
That way it doesn't disrupt canon saying that they LEFT THE DRAGONS ALONE, and it feels less forced. The new kids could all be descendents of the gang, too. I know that having them be descendents w similar features or characteristics or wtv is REALLY far fetched after all of this time and I think that realistically it wouldn't be like that, but for a storytelling purpose I think it'd be okay.
And I think it's fine if Tom is a descendant of Hiccstrid, and all of the rest of the kids are somehow tied to other members of the gang, but I think it'd be REALLY funny if they all had different last names except whoever was related to the Jorgensons. Like the Jorgenson family pride in their name and their lineage just like,, transcended a thousand years and many many many many many generations. It just stuck bc they refused to give it up. (this is like actually the point of this post lol)
Anyway now I want to work on a proper TNR rewrite/reconceptualization with THIS premise and just see how it goes lol
the best thing i ever did as a writer was start looking up my favorite authors’ names in my podcast app. i have a Fancy Degree(tm) and while i gained a lot it i didn’t learn a fraction as much from my formal schooling as i have from just listening to writers talk about their craft. hearing people talk about their own work and why they made the choices they made has taught me more than any workshop or seminar has. it has often given me the feeling of learning directly from my idols. people like ursula le guin may no longer be with us on this earth but we can still learn from them - not only from their work but from how they thought about their work. bell hooks has spoken on lots of podcasts.
plus, looking authors up leads me to podcasts i like with hosts who i think ask inquisitive questions who then lead me to other books that i wouldn’t necessarily have picked up in a store but that end up really informing my practice.
a couple of my favorite podcasts include the longform, between the covers, and thresholds. those are a good start. this most recent episode of between the covers a lot of topics that folks who like my writing on here might be interested in.
Dusted didn't like looking into Mirrors. Not by a long shot, they'd nary have them in their house. But Poppy dragged them to the basement's large mirror for them to look at the "outfit" Poppy had put together for them. It wasn't really proper clothing as much as it was a paper hat that the two had put together— Mostly Dusted, really, Poppy couldn't be trusted with scissors at this age. And though the hat looked fine, they guessed, the rest of them though, was a sight for sore eyes.
They looked at Poppy as some relief- who was staring back at them through the mirror intently for a good minute, and only saw… Curiosity, as she simply rubbed her chin, squinting between them and their reflections.
"Mmm. I think this mirror is broken," Poppy stated simply, "Wait here Sib, I'm going to look for another one!" she exclaimed as she went into one of the boxes to dig for other ones which- Core, of course, had plenty of. Dusted simply looked at Poppy with a certain look.
Not a doubtful look, not a confused look, no weird looks at all. No, it was the gaze of a child that, for one, didn't hold any strong feelings about what they looked like to a mirror. The mirror may say one thing about them, but what this small, paper child saw in them was a million times more important to them.
