#and OF COURSE YOU CAN BOOKBIND I LOVE THE IDEA OF BOOKBINDING
pastafossa · 3 months
Note
Hi honey! How are you? How’s your mom doing? I hope she’s better now🥺💚
I’ve recently decided to learn how to book bind bc it’s a must to have my fav fanfics as actual books. I’m still learning and it’s probably gonna take a while before I get the results I want but I wanted to ask you if it was okay with you to book bind The Red Thread? Obviously it would be just for me, I would not sell it or make any profits. (And if it turns out how I want to, I would love to gift you one👀)
It’s one of my favourite fanfics of all time, like it’s a masterpiece and I would love to have a physical copy of it<3
And I know it’s not finished yet but it’d probably have to be a few volumes anyways bc it’s a lot so😅
She's doing ok! Progress is slow but it's definitely happening! She's graduated from at-home physical therapy to outpatient, which is a HUGE thing. We've gotten the house pretty well set up too now (chair lift for a section of stairs not covered before, new railing on the front steps), and between me, dad, and sis's various sleep schedules, we're all able to make sure she has someone nearby when she needs help getting around or opening things. I'm still in caretaker mode and trying to balance everything, but she's getting there, so I hold onto that! As for me, I'm doing... ok I think, considering how exhausting and brutal the past few months have been. I'm taking @shouldbestudying41 's advice and just trying to be kind to myself, and I'll admit my brain seriously needed the break. I continue to miss Cato something awful, but I've felt a little more settled since his ashes came home, and I think I'm starting to adjust to sleeping without him next to my pillow. I also got my follow-up today with my cardiologist on my heart issues and their answer was basically a shrug and a, 'we have no idea why your heart's doing this, but it's getting better every time we test you, so keep doing what you're doing!' Which could be worse. So... I'm getting there. Slow and steady!
And oh my gosh, you absolutely, ABSOLUTELY can bookbind TRT, thank you! 😭The idea anyone would love it enough to bookbind makes me SO FUCKING HAPPY! Hell, if I could sell copies at cost I would, but sadly that's a huge no no and all I can do legally is tell people, YES you can bookbind TRT for your shelf! I'm 100% supportive basically (also I would D I E if I got one, like no pressure at all cause D A Y U M it's a long thing to bind, and also just knowing it's out there on someone's shelf is more than I ever expected would happen so I'm delighted even if you just bind for you!).
TRT volumes one to ten maybe??? LOL. I know I had it planned as a series originally before I decided to just kinda keep it in one thing since we were all already there LOL.

2023 in books
better late than never, right?
2023 was a relatively slow year for me in bookbinding, but I still made 30+ books. (ask me how much time I spent on my other hobbies and it becomes clear why books were fewer.)
A5 books
the first A5 of the year was an entry for a bookbinding competition (which I didn't win), where the theme was climate change. I had a lot of fun putting it together and it was the first time I made an A5 tête-bêche book - I usually do these A6 or A7 size.
Tumblr media
this was also the year I decided to start a collection of menocchio fics, which also led to experiments with printing directly onto bookcloth to get titles on the spine
Tumblr media
what's fun about bookbinding is that you can Just Make A Book, but you can also Get Ideas And Run With Them with it. which is how I wound up with this black on black book. destiel necromancy fic, because of course it is
Tumblr media Tumblr media
going back to something more colourful...Ulysses. not the James Joyce one, the slowburn 00Q one. named for a Tennyson poem.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
final A5 book of the year is my Renegade Exchange book, which I bound for Silent Sun Press - a Crowley-centric genfic with outsider POV, so naturally I went for TV!Gomens colour schemes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A6 and A7 books
I started the year ambitiously - in addition to entering a competition, I started my urchin specials project. thus far I've still only bound these first three books for the project, but I plan to do more. first dustjackets as well!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I continued with the no-glue pamphlets and did three
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I joined the Tiny Books Exchange, and as a proof of concept - before I typeset an A7 sized tête-bêche - I did a little tête-bêche of the two Temeraire fics I wrote for yuletide once upon a time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then followed of course the Tiny Book I bound for the exchange - my copy (test & proof of concept, bottom), the giftee copy (green, top right), and the author copy (blue, top left)
Tumblr media
I typeset a lot more than I bind - I have plans to bind so and so, so I typeset it, but don't always have the time to bind it right away. so I have folders full of typesets ready to go at a moment's notice. this one was typeset a whole year before I bound it
Tumblr media
are these paperbacks or just very slim hardbacks? I call them paperbacks as I used 0.5mm boards and they have no spine, but ymmv
Tumblr media
this one definitely is a hardback - with slightly thicker boards, a spine, and two fics in one book. I do love those tête-bêches
Tumblr media Tumblr media
at my work we have a lot of deliveries wrapped in this nice recycled brown paper that was just going into the recycling bin, and I thought: why not make books out of it? so I played around with it (and my printer) and came up with a neat aesthetic for paperbacks with breakaway spines (using 0.5mm boards)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
will I ever stop with the tête-bêches? no. also this one has endpapers made from SEAWEED. how cool is that?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the last A6 of the year is this little collection of my own stories for a tiny Danish fandom. detectives and trauma, but make it about food? yes. food and cooking themed endpapers and cover papers, and the dustjacket has fake coffee stains on it. perfect
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and that is all, folks. I did a lot of different styles and types of binding this year, I had fun with it, I learned a lot, and I'm happy with what I've created.

handbinding of A Study in Scarlette by kittebasu
There are people who want to live forever, and then there is Shinichi, who just wants to live a little longer than this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this bind has been in my head since i first read the fic like, three years ago. i dreamed up so many ideas for it, for so long, and now it's finally done! the typeset was actually done in early 2022, back when i was still using google docs, but it went through a few iterations because i was just. so. fiddly. with every aspect of this book. it needed to be perfect (as close to perfect as i, an amateur bookbinder out of my depth, can get) and it had to be absolutely over the top, to reflect the insane amount of love and care that the author put into the fic itself.
the first time i read this fic, i barely knew what detective conan was, much less all of the intricate plot details; i was just along for the ride, but by the end i was completely invested. i went back and watched through the anime as well as a few movies (it took me six months) and then read the fic again. and then a few more times. kaishin and the world of dcmk has utterly gripped me. it's 100% this fic's fault and i love it so, so, much.
i went through a few iterations of visual designs and i'm really happy with the little details i managed to squeeze in.
the entire color scheme is based around red, because 1) it's a murder mystery, 2) for scarlette shinamoto (and the title of the fic as well as the original holmes novel it references), and 3) the irony of "lady red" actually being red. the secret fourth reason is that i think red/gold is a super sexy color combo.
i sewed the textblock with red thread to reference holmes' "scarlet thread of murder".
Tumblr media
another detail i love is the five yen coin bookmark, it was one of my first ideas and it turned out even better than i thought.
Tumblr media
i wanted the endpapers to evoke a sense of the white marbled floor of the ballroom, with the glow-in-the-dark kaitou kid caricature being the luminol on the floor, and the little pops of red looks like blood that's been mixed in. i lucked out in that the other side of the endpaper was like a lavender-purpley color, i like to think of it as a little wink wink nudge to the color of the actual Lady Red.
Tumblr media
the chapter pages got a few reworkings, but i'm happy with the illustrations i ended up doing for each of them. the chapter titles are one of my favorite things about the fic, each one has so much meaning packed into it and flows so beautifully, and i wanted to put as much care into making them pop as possible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the cover was a linocut carving i designed and carved, which i then printed onto the bookcloth, and ironed on htv on top.
Tumblr media
i also threw in a couple of my drawings of my favorite scenes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is getting way too long, so i'll end it here. i'll have a separate post detailing the process every step of the way, if anyone wants to take a closer look. this fic is kind of directly responsible for getting me into fanbinding, so it's safe to say it altered the course of my life. i now spend way too much time (and money) looking at book stuff.
kittebasu, if, somehow, you see this and would like an author copy, i would be honored to make one and ship it to you; i would be overjoyed to gift you with any art i have the ability to make, because the fics you wrote have irreversibly altered my brain chemistry, and being able to give back in any capacity would be a dream. (thank you.)
a few postscripts:
i am not selling any copies of this fic. partially because i believe in the gift economy of fandom as well as firmly keeping fanbinding a hobby that will stay unmonetized, but also because it took me months (years, if we are counting when i first finished the typeset) to finish this and i do not have the strength.
however, if you are also a fan of this fic and would like a copy, i honestly, fervently, encourage you to give fanbinding a try! renegade publishing and its discord server are an absolutely wonderful and free resource. i knew nothing about bookbinding and had zero materials when i first started, but i've learned so much thanks to the lovely people there. if you're still apprehensive about getting started, i'd be willing to share my typeset of this fic as well as answer any questions about the making of this book if you DM me.

So... @muffinlance wrote a really awesome story. I read a post from a point in time, though I truly do not remember when since it seems like I've been working on this project forever, saying that she gives blanket permission for people to print and bind the story into a book (I think there was an also addendum saying that they do not give permission to be sold, since selling fic is illegal). This fic has had total control over my whole brain since it was sent to me (@creatorofthemind I believe it was you, so thank you forever for tuning me into it) back during the days of like chapter six or seven.
So here I am now, sharing this amazing journey of my first ever bookbinding adventure. Further reading below.
So to give you an idea of what's going on, this is a fanfiction about Zuko (Avatar the Last Airbender) (animated show version, the LA show did not exist yet and we do not speak of the movie) being adopted by Hakoda, Father of Katara and Zuko. (This might have also been what kicked off the Give Zuko A Parent craze, but don't fact check me.)
Overall, the characters from the show stick very well to the cannon versions, but where MuffinLance really shines is in the rich backstories and fleshed out feeling of all the non cannon elements. Especially the background characters. I would argue that the writing in this peice of fanwork could easily rival the cannon show at many points of comparison.
Now that you have context, we can get into the actual process.
To start, I used this guide to figure out where to even begin, and fount the included resource list to also be quite helpful. I cannot for the LIFE OF ME figure out where I found the template I used for the front matter and such, but it must be somewhere and I will link to it when I inevitably come across it again.
Then I began to typeset. This step took... a long time. I worked in chunks from about September of 2022 to late March of 2024. I would get a big section done, sometimes even the entire thing, but then find I hated the way I had done it and give up for months at a time. Such is the life of ADHD and flitting interest in projects I suppose.
And then finally, step one was done, and I was left with pages on a word document that look like this. (And do please let me know if you want the link to the document. It was so much work, and I would love to not be the only one to use it.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next step was printing out this beast. Ended up being about eight pages of front matter, and about 630 pages of body text.
That I printed wrong.
Tumblr media
Twice.
Tumblr media
Before finally getting it right. And then not getting a picture of it, because I finished at 4 am and had work at 7, and am also an idiot.
Then I simply stitched along, putting everything together into a beautiful text block.
Tumblr media
And came up with a design for the cover.
Tumblr media
Yes the glue did end up lumpy. Ignore it.
Yes I did have to sketch out the design onto a scraped page several times before I figured out what I was doing. Ignore that too.
The cover design does wrap around the entire cover. No I did not get a picture before I glued the thing down. See again: I'm an idiot. And just... massively impatient.
Finally, we get to the stage of gluing. Behold, my bookpress.
Tumblr media
Of course, topped with Madam MuffinLances own actual professional-people book, Fox's Tounge and Kirin's Bone. It is Excelent. Here is the LINK so you can go and support this amazing author with the real-monies as well as the internet-kudos.
Then, once everything is glued together, one must give the book its "gilt" edges.

BROOOOOOOOOO. (sorry if the following is cringe, i am a little drunk at a party but i saw your ask about favourite stories. and now I'm in the loo for a second typing up this reply)
so. scylla and charybdis is a MASTERPIECE and I will review it soon.
the shack at the end of the lane makes me SOB.
sparkling cyanide is a work on language and the meaning of freedom of rare beauty (and also. how. in very few words you say the world)
your latest on merope (i won't even try to write the name from memory) but it made me UGLY CRY. that "I'm mucky" stuck in my brain and now i am severely emotional just thinking about it fuck my makeup.
bookbinding is a masterpiece of a romcom and inhuman resources made me squeal (too much time with roddy's missus lol, and my poor roddie getting his arm bitten by an inferius my poor baby)
death eaters in paradise is my most re-read out of yours (I ADORE IT)- then again, roddy slander which i cannot tolerate but there's lots of lucius slander too and CAGA makes me giggle every time i read it (and also the poor bell boy, and druella is a bitch and the gaudy cocktails and oh my god i love your writing so much)
i haven't read everlasting ink yet but as soon as i review all the others i will get to it, you deserve it.
all of this being said. my favourites of yours? atramentum. and other women and of purer blood. i. love. them. think about them maybe once a day each, every day. love them. you deserve 29307945 views and kudos. and a kiss. and one of my martinis❤️
oh darling. i hope your hangover wasn't too awful after this. not least because i'm chuckling.
and also preening, because i love attention and the opportunity to talk about myself. although not to repeat myself - i've talked about some of these already: scylla and charybdis here, the shack at the end of the lane here, sparkling cyanide here, bookbinding here, inhuman resources here, and other women and of purer blood here.
of the others...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
we can't discuss bó na leath adhairce without having the song on in the background.
as i've said elsewhere, merope gaunt has become one of my favourite characters to explore this year, in particular because she provides an excellent insight in how the series thinks about things like motherhood, desire, love, and death.
in this piece, she is the lens through which we can examine how the series thinks about a theme which is surprisingly prominent in it, given that it's a story about a not-particularly-observant teenage boy: beauty.
the harry potter series is suspicious both of those who are unnaturally beautiful and those who are unnaturally lacking in beauty. harry is a physical everyman - neither too good-looking nor identifiably unattractive - and the female characters the book likes, especially ginny and hermione, are hot enough that we know they're not bad or unsympathetic people (not like ugly old rita skeeter, or pansy parkinson, or moaning myrtle, or dolores umbridge) but also not so hot that they need to be considered bad in a different way (like fleur, until the point she proves she has inner beauty too and ginny and molly accept her...)
this isn't only a spectrum reserved for the female characters (lockhart gets the fleur treatment - the idea that being good-looking or vain is indicative of some deeper moral weakness; peter pettigrew is unattractive as well as a cunt), but it intersects with one of the series' main gendered aspects: that stereotypically feminine interests are silly, and that women who wish to be considered substantial in some way don't care about them.
the main example of this is, of course, the difference between lavender and hermione. the one is silly, giggly, and girly, the other is clever, sensible, and authentic. the one is the sort of girl you have a fling with, the other is the woman you marry.
merope is an ugly character - and, therefore, one which the narrative is not particularly sympathetic towards - but her ugliness also comes accompanied by a jealous desire for beauty she cannot attain, in the forms of tom riddle sr. and his pretty girlfriend, cecilia. neither of these two are shown to be nice or sympathetic people either (tom sr. is a dick in his only canon appearance, and the narrative emphasises at other points that the riddles are rude and unpopular). merope and tom exist, then, at the two extremes of attractiveness which the series regards as negative.
but merope is also someone whose life is unrelentingly miserable. in the fact that it is devoid of beauty, it is also devoid of comfort, pleasure, safety, opportunity and so on. much as the series is critical of love that is not sacrificial, it is critical of covetousness, frivolity, or silliness. but these things are not simply morally neutral, but morally good. and a girl who is clearly - if we read between the lines of canon - the subject of degrading and violent abuse at the hands of her male relatives should be able to find comfort in the pretty ephemera of womanhood. sometimes a lipstick is a lipstick and a unicorn is a unicorn. sometimes they're a lifeline.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
death (eaters) in paradise and atramentum come together (bellatrix: i'm listening), because the latter is in very many sense the serious version of the former.
my justification for why bellamort are a good couple is consistent across things that i write with them in: that he is one of the only men in her life who sees her as a real person, and who understands her desire to escape the rigid conventions of her gender and social class; that she understands his need for love and attention, and that she is far more sympathetic to his childhood trauma than he is willing to admit. the idea that this is the only authentic relationship in either of their lives is one i sincerely believe in, in contrast to the assumption from outside the ship that they can have nothing in common or that there is no honesty there.
both of these pieces have that idea of authenticity - of something real existing underneath pretty set-dressing - as a key theme, alongside the idea that voldemort admires anyone who is interested in making their own life.
atramentum is obviously the sadder of the two, looking as it does at the comfort bellatrix finds in a draughty attic bedroom as the dark lord prepares to go to the potters.
death (eaters) in paradise features bellamort on a package holiday in marbella. and true, we do have to say rip to the bell-boy, killed in the service of trying to wingman for the dark lord.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
everlasting ink deals, of course, with what bellamort leave to the world.
i'm a delphini stan account (let me live!), and i think she's a hugely interesting cipher for all sorts of people's neuroses. normally in my writing, those people are her father and her father's various boyfriends, but here it's harry and ginny.
hinny's divergent relationships with lord voldemort (harry loves the hot one, who's also an orphan; he's the one that ruined ginny's life! the snake-faced one literally doesn't realise ginny exists; he's the spectre haunting harry's entire world!) is one of the reasons i don't think they're a particularly good or interesting couple, but here they're dealing with their own baggage and making it work.
with the help of an only mildly sinister toddler, who has big brown eyes, the ability to speak to snakes, and a love of custard she certainly didn't get from bellatrix...
delphini grows up to be a hot slut with a foul mouth. ginny's influence, i'm sure.
[now, for a little sneak peek...]
it is true that poor, useless rodolphus isn't having a great time in my stuff, i'll admit to it. (although i do think he'll put in a better showing in scylla and charybdis than he has in many other things, not least because the main character assassination happening there is to regulus.)
the issue, i fear, is that he doesn't have much interest in witches. maybe he and bella both like tall, thin men with blood on their hands? or maybe roddy's more inclined towards a ginger - we'll have to see if the tawdry little romance he'll be having with percy weasley as per a prompt i'm filling for rare pair fest will make him any cheerier...

For the fanfic asks. I have already forgotten all of them 🤣
I've come to your inbox today to tell you how much bookbinder/songwriter is on my mind! I will see fanart that is from a completely different fandom and think it's them 😁 I just love it so much, who doesn't want their favourite bookworm and metal singer to get together? ❤️❤️❤️ and the way you write them is just so wow, absolutely amazing, and especially the last chapter with Bilbo being so worried about turning 30 was so relatable. I mean, he has achieved things like running a bookshop and a bookclub, he's got a steady boyfriend who loves him and they make a bloody good team, and 30 is so young in the grand scheme of things! If he were to be all successfull by 30, then what would he do with the rest of his life 🤣🤣🤣 at least that's what I tell myself, 33 and still working things out majourly over here, but it feels like it's getting better 😜
Sending all the love, and I hope writing will bring you lots of joy for many more years to come! 💜💜💜
Did you know that you're the reason this fic even got written?? I think about that so much, and I'm just blown away lol also, it was the one I was scared for the most!! My first Modern AU, and the most terrifying, and now look!!
Bookbinder//Songwriter is my golden child these days, it feels like.
BUT LET ME TELL YOU, I did NOT throw any self projection into this last chapter (I did, and it was so much fun, and actually gave me a different perspective as well). I turn 30 in a few days, and it's nice to walk into it with the "life doesn't end after this milestone" mentality.
They really are a fantastic team, and I have SO MUCH MORE to tell with them. I really enjoy the idea of this slice of life fic, because you can do so much with it. We'll see them continue to grow in their relationship, and as individuals - with a few hardships, as life often tosses at us.
Thank you so much for continuing to read and support!! I always look forward to seeing you in my inbox, comments, and on my dashboard! <3 and of course, thank you for challenging me with a band au that blossomed into this!!

Hi! I don't really know what's the etiquette on this but I loved your fic and I'd like to bookbind 'When We Get Around to Talking About It' to have a physical copy (for personal use only, of course!). So I'm asking for permission from you to do so 👉👈
It's totally okay if you don't like the idea though!
(If you do agree, I might document the process and post it here and maybe bookbind a separate copy for you if it works out well -- I'm getting back into bookbinding after a large break so no promises there...)
yeah 100% go for it! id love to know how it goes! if u want i can send u an A5 formatted copy of the series—it doesn’t have any of the new stuff ive been workin on which sucks but it is completed & has nav-av wings as dividers which is the real kicker. it’s what i printed out to edit with so it looks like this (with edits made obviously)
Tumblr media
but idk what size paper you use—probably not a5 now that I’m thinking about it. I could send you the word file or something if u wanted to change the size idk. or u could typeset it ur self the way you want i also dk.
i really appreciate you asking permission thanks!!

Get to know me better!
Tag 10 people you want to get to know better
Thank you for the tag:  @ereborne :D
Relationship status:  single
Favorite color(s):  My wardrobe says blue, and my heart probably also says blue, but purples and greens are also up there
Favorite food:  currently, the homemade millionaire shortbread in my fridge (thanks @charhtebobo!), the goat’s cheese and caramelized onion pizza from the place down the road, and the lemon cream doughnuts from the place down the road from the pizza place down the road (we just moved to a new house and there is so much good food around here)
Song stuck in my head:  right this second it’s Agape by Bear’s Den but it’s only just defeated the ongoing Salt and Pepper Diner Experience of twenty rounds of The Heart is a Muscle by Gang of Youths interspersed with one (1) Buck Rogers by Feeder. No I don’t know what that’s about either.
Last thing you googled:  i have a vivid mental image of sitting at the kitchen table with my housemate last night drinking camomile tea and googling a question of vital importance but I have no idea what it was. no, wait, it was “do we need to put the bins out”, which isn’t very interesting (the answer was yes, and I had to do three separate rounds of “i am not a robot” to get it). In the course of the same conversation he googled both “hench women in film” and “who plays the built Russian woman in Deadpool” and was disappointed in both answers.
Time:  15.25
Dream trip:  i feel like i used to have a fun adventurous answer for this! but the travel anxiety is real. idk, i haven’t been to the sea in a while? and my sister’s in Germany at the moment, which is making me nostalgic, so maybe the Bodensee? or to go hang out with @divvectortrianglevector who I haven’t seen in person in wayyyyy too long.
Last thing you read:  this excellent Steddie fic by @greatunironic, which I found via @idiopath-fic-smile‘s amazing versions of the songs therein, Fugitive Telemetry, this incredible DinnCobb fic - it’s been a good reading time in the life of goingspare!
Last book you enjoyed reading: Fugitive Telemetry - murderbot gets to solve a murder! cleared my skin watered my crops etc etc
Last book you hated reading:  oh boy. well, it’s been a while. these days i have so little new-book-energy to spare that i don’t tend to start something unless i’m already 100% sure i’m going to love it? but i think it was about two years ago, we were talking about doing Time’s Eye by Arthur C Clarke and Stephen Baxter for @teachingmycattoread, and then it made me so angry that we did not, in fact, end up doing it for the podcast. The premise is kind of intriguing but the execution makes me want to commit acts of creative and unhinged violence. So.
Favorite thing to cook/bake:  to cook, macaroni cheese - i’ve got the recipe down to soothing-ritual-level now, and i almost never fuck it up (unless you count adding too much cayenne? which i manage to do nearly every time). to bake it’s probably my ten-minutes-and-done chocolate chip cookie recipe, which now i think about it works basically the same - I’ve done it so many times i can do it without thinking, i can fit it into the half-hour gaps between work meetings, and somehow they end up melt-in-the-mouth every time.
Favorite craft to do in your free time: hmmmm tricky. the most enduring is definitely knitting - it’s so soothing! - but I’ve fallen out of the habit recently due to ongoing battle with my physiotheraphy exercises. I’m patching some jeans with embroidery bees at the moment, which is a lot of fun, and I recently got into bookbinding, so those are both strong contenders.
Most niche dislike: probably any of my academic dislikes? I don’t know how common these are among other medievalists but 1) some specific translation choices in the Seamus Heaney Beowulf 2) Byrhtnoth antis 3) people who call the Alfred Jewel an aestel instead of an Unidentified Socketed Object. In real life it’s probably like...olives. or something.
Opinion on circuses:  None.
Do you have any sense of direction:  Absolutely not.
Tell us about your D&D character:  Akra Bharash! Silver dragonborn eldritch knight! Struggling PhD student and family black sheep! Originally conceived of as like, Newton Geizler but about dragons and also hench af, has somehow ended up Eliot Spencer, as all my D&D characters are eventually wont to do. I’m love them. I miss them. One day I will play them again.
Tag-list (you don’t need to do this if you don’t want it!): no pressure @sinni-ok-sessi @morkaischosen @tallangrycockatiel @july-19th-club @verbforverb @thesuperfeyneednoshoes and anyone else who wants to!

Hi! I'm a bookbinder, particularly of fanworks, and I was wondering if I could get permission to make three bound copies of your fic "Most Ardently": one to give to my friend as a gift, one for my personal collection, and of course a copy for you as well. My friend and I both really enjoyed it :) Of course, if you'd rather I didn't, I completely understand. Thank you for your time!
Hi there!
Oh my word that’s such a lovely gift idea, I’d be honored! Perhaps you can send a private message and we can discuss details? 😊

hi i came to ask if you are ok with anyone printing and bookbinding your fic, with all due credits of course. i found your fic by chance on twitter and it was the best thing that happened to me, i never felt so close to any other like this before (also the first time i ever felt so emotional over the idea of printing a fic). not only that, the title is the song i dedicated years ago to the creature i love the most: my cat. so needless to say i was crying even before starting to read it! thank you so much for your work, you are amazing, have a wonderful day
oh my god?? well, first of all, i am incredibly flattered and happy that my writing meant so much to you. i’m glad that other people are so not normal about those freaks like i am. and yes, you can print & bind my fic, as long as its for like. personal use and stuff. also, if you do end up printing&binding tfobima, PLEASE send me pictures. you don’t have to or anything, i just think that is super cool and i’d love to see it.

2023 recap!
Can't belive the year is over! Time to look back cause I sure don't remember half the stuff I've done
January
Birb got 10 notes and I couldn't believe how much people loved him.
I tried a crochet kit and was defeated. In my defense I have to say it was right after an exam and it was really cold.
I got a watercolor set and rediscovered my love for watercolor
February
Discovered Funguary, and made 4 charactes. It's a really fun challenge that I'm surely going to participate again.
I made quite a few watercolor pieces, I still like them all a lot
March
Don't know how, but I finished the 100 head challenge. There are some awful monstruosities, but I learned a lot. I'll probably do it again in the future, it's a pretty nice exercise.
I finally made a sona! And this one has stuck! I love my lil shadow creature.
April
Made what is probably the watercolor piece I love the most. And one the pieces I like the most overall.
I got FlipaClip and had a lot fun making some little animations. Someone even used one of the lil gifs! That made me pretty happy
I personalized a little notebook to carry around, and it was the best desition of my life. I love that thing. And it's amazing that I don't have to search for the pen, it's all together!
May
The coin pouch is also one of the best things I've made. The strings are a bit long and the embroidery is a bit loose, I'll fix those on the next one I make (looking at you, squid pouch)
The anual redraw of Coral and Sebastian couldn't be missing. The poor Sebastian finally got his (I hope) final design. I was in love with how it looks, but looking it now... What hapened to their faces?
Decided to redraw some old drawings I had on Ibis. The progress I've made since I drew the originals.
Mermay, of course! Somehow they turned into oficial ocs. I love the stupid trio.
June
Aaaaaaahhhhh!!!! It's almost July and I haven't updated my ArtFight references! "Chibi" versions it is. At least now a lot of them have colored full body references.
Painted a box! It's now buried under too many trinkets I have to clean up, but I still love how pretty it looks!
Started a new sketchbook and painted the cover. I love the mushroom lantern.
Made this year's Artfight gif, banner and artfighters. The silly gif brings me a smile every time I see it.
July
ArtFight! 42 attacks and 21 defenses. I have no idea how I managed to make so many. I did get burned out on the second half of the month tho. I absolutely love every single art I received, but this one with Coral and Sebastian has a special place.
What do you do when you are burned out? You make a new style, of course! I love the simple style that came out of that. Feels weird to see that is fairly recent, I feel like I've been using it for ages. It has evolved a bit since, those thin lines in the eyes look weird now.
August
Nuclear Waste was born. And people went crazy. The silly boy loves and appreciates all the affection you've showered him!
Smaugust is a thing? Dragons! I still need so much prectice with them and animals in general.
I made a comic! I love it, it's so silly. I had a great time with it.
September
Pirate shirt! It fits a bit weird, but I think I can fix it. It took soooo long to hand sew it
I got a drawing tablet! Took me a couple of weeks to get used to, but it was worth it. I love using it.
To practice I made every single prompt of CuteGirltober. The only reason I was able to finish is that most of them were left as sketches. Should have learned from ArtFight, I can't draw every day, that's too much.
November
I made a font! It works really well, and it's so fun to type something and see it look like you handwrote it.
Got to write a bit too. I need to do that more.
I also worked on some proyects I've been wanting to do but haven't touched in a long while.
Including bookbinding a little notebook! I filled it with headshots of my ocs.
December
ArticFight prompts and a secret santa were mostly the reasons I drew. I love this one with Alex and Layla.
I also made some free adoptables. There might be some left when this is posted.
And we are done with the year!
That was so much! Thank you everyone, hope you had a good year and an even better 2024!

Unit 1 Evaluation
How did I find this unit?
I really enjoyed all aspects of this unit and the projects I have completed throughout. I felt like my skills as a designer have developed well and I have learnt a lot of new things including how to work some Adobe softwares, such as InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, alongside physical skills while bookbinding and using the letterpress in workshops and inductions. My favourite workshop so far has been the bookbinding workshop as I am quite the perfectionist, so making sure that everything lined up correctly and the pages I cut down was quite enjoyable.
Additionally, I have learnt a lot about myself - my personal design style, and how I like to work. Through the help of this course, I have discovered that I have a current keen interest in illustration, which I have never before. The two open projects in this term ('intersections' and 'a different point of view') I created my final piece by drawing it up using Procreate - which I really enjoyed and will continue to work with. Despite my confidence with this programme, in future projects I would like to expand my work variety by exploring other means of creating, such as mixed media or using other digital softwares to ensure I move out of my comfort zone.
In coming units, I hope to refine my design skills and better my understanding about softwares to be able to create more professional looking work. Furthermore, I need to make sure to generate some idea boards for my projects, plan them out more before diving right into them and create some more experimental pieces of artwork per project to show development - as this is something I feel all of my projects so far lack in.
I believe I have responded well to the peer assessments and mid point critiques we have had, and taken all comments on board and applied them to my work well. Moreover, I think I have managed my time very well during all of my projects and not left anything until before deadline (which is unfortunately what I have done before). I have also kept on top of my blog, updating it as the work is produced. This has really helped me have the most time available to me to create my projects - particularly intersections as this was the most time consuming project we have had as of yet. I was quite nervous heading into this project as it was a very broad brief, however, the project helped me learn the importance of extensive research prior to projects as without doing the amount I did, I would have never decided on the outcome or have a design that I am as pleased with. While my project did go through a lot of changes, from initial ideas to design work, I am more than happy with how it turned out and it makes me excited for future projects.
My strongest part of this entire unit was definitely either the 'intersections' project or 'a different point of view' as I really got to explore illustrating, book design and selecting the right typeface for a book cover which suit my current career path plans.
Overall, this course has been really enjoyable so far and has been a big part of my own personal development as well as design development. Furthermore, I like the idea of using blogs as a form of work documentation as it's interesting to look back at past projects. I also love organising everything and designing my blog so that it has tags and you can refine searches per project. I can't wait to see what I produce in the future and be able to compare it to my old work and see my design development.

ALSO 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 16, 27, 28, 30 for the artist asks? :)
1. Art programs you have but don't use
mmm krita and... well I have the entire adobe creative cloud at my disposal but I just. don't. honestly nowadays I've been doing a lot of my stuff traditional with just like. my sketchbook and my favorite pen but for digital I will use csp.
3. What ideas come from when you were little
...so I had this character. Merivette. right. she is like. the archetype for most of my focus characters for most of my stories and her original thing was that she was an scp doctor that did dimension fuckery (like 507) but then she just became like. idk she became part of the vivienne character archive mythos ig
5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself
OMYGOPD FUCKING. I'd say a good 70-80% I don't post ??? maybe upto 90-95% ??? that'll probs drop down to like. 35-50% if I start learning how to use insta but since I can't exactly work easily at fucking school I barely post stuff I would think looks good enough for my tumblr. ye I mentioned insta but that is specifically gonna be like. doodle dump
7. A medium of art you don't work in but appreciate
FIBER ARTS!! fiber arts, 3d modelling and traditional painting. god. what I would give to have skills and knowhow for 3d modelling. this is reminding me to get back into bookbinding and scrap booking sajosdf
14. Any favorite motifs
... stars. I mean obviously with my current brainrot being like. about the skies and the stars and the things beyond and b elow the earth of course stars. eyes too ig but like. kind of a given
16. Something you are good at but don't really have fun doing
landscapes and comics. comics I can't will myself to drawing something over and over and having to make it look decently polished. landscapes I just fret over the details too much. getting more used to comics and the likes specifically cause. yknow. I wanna make animatics
27. Do you warm up before getting to the good stuff? If so, what is it you draw to warm up with
OKAY SO I love just. doodling random shapes as warm up. and then also I will like. doodle a bunch of stuff related to said character on a separate page and maybe some small doodles of the character. specifically for the shapes I'll do different directions of hatching for them and in areas where shapes intersect I'll make it kinda like a cross hatching thing
28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines)
uhhh not really ? They're usually around the time I get burnt out or am buusy. like you know I tried artfight but that literally started around the same time as my school year. and then the school is also hosting a zine but they started it during fucking hell week so they extended the deadline but I do not have any full illustrations at the ready so maybe like. next year or maybe I rush something up idk
30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated
with all the art I am currently proud of rn I think just the character design refs that I have up for asotfs. you can see a change in how I draw in the ones I have but I like them. I do not post art often .w.

Hi!! I've been your fan for a long time and I recently stumbled upon a bookbinding video in TikTok, can I make your stories into book, 🥹? Don't worry it's for personal use only, I just would love to have a book with the best Yandere BTS stories ever!
hi honey, first of all I really appreciate you for loving my works but… I’m sorry I’m not too sure abt this… I recently had to deal w plagiarism and ALOT of other lies and stuff so I’m just paranoid… 💔
And I’m not saying that you have bad intentions or you want to plagiarise my works, of course not but I’m just not sure if I’m comfortable with the bookbinding idea ygm? I’m so sorry if I sound rude because it’s not my intention at all!
thank you! ❤️ I appreciate you loads 💌

Hi 😔 Is not the first time I am here and it wont be the last… I reread DWTD like 5 times this past week (but more like, re read once, and found out the podfic existed and i’ve been listening to it non stop).
I love your fic so much you have no idea, it has cemented itself in my brain and is cannon to meeeeeeeeee
There are so many escenes I am dying to draw 😔 I need that visualized. I want to pretend DWTD is a graphic novel, trick myself into thinking is cannon material.
Anyways… The reason why I am here 😔 🥺… I remembered that I know how to book bind, and I don’t have time… but if I got the time, would you be cool with me making myself a physical copy of DWTD? If you are cool with it I would let you know once is done… but yeah… I want that in my collection 😔 I want to show it to my irl tf friends and be like “Oh yeah, you never read TF: Deal with the Devil? yeah is part of the g1 continuity, really old actually” <- My bookbinding abilities won’t trick them But I must try.
Anyways, I hope you are out there living your best life. If I ever write an essay on why I love DWTD please look away I have to pretended to be normal about things.
Ah thank you! Delighted you enjoyed it :D and Gilraina’s podfic is a fantastic adaptation, worth multiple listens for sure
yes absolutely you can make a physical copy of DwtD!! I would love to see photos if you do end up having time to do that (and provided you’re happy to share photos of it of course). Same with if you do draw any scenes from it - that my fic’s creatively inspired you is such a high compliment, it’s made me super happy ^^
and if you ever did write an essay about why you love DwtD that would also bring me great joy tbh! (that being said tho I also totally get it can be hard to flail about loving something when there's a possibility the creator might be figuratively looking over your shoulder, so in all seriousness it’s fine if you genuinely would like me to look away if you did that. just thought i’d mention since i wasn’t quite sure if this was hyperbole, and imo this is a very understandable request to make)

your turtle romcom fic was amazing. do you have a fancast for them?
thank you so much, anon - i'm thrilled you enjoyed bookbinding, and i'm always delighted to welcome new members to turtle nation.
i'm never great at fan-casts largely because i can never remember people's names, but also because i often have incredibly specific ideas in my mind about how these characters look which i find very difficult to then actually explain. but still... let's get into it:
myrtle
one of my least favourite aspects of the writing of the harry potter series is the fact that characters we are supposed to find unsympathetic are always, always written as some combination of fat, ugly, unintelligent, and inarticulate.
i understand the watsonian explanation that harry-as-narrator is a teenager and teenagers are kind of dicks. i understand the doylist genre reasons for this - jkr is not the first children's author to make use of such tropes, and they are certainly used with a lighter touch in hp than in, for example, roald dahl - and i also understand the reasons specific to the series' central mystery, in which snape's ugliness [the marker of his apparent villainy] actually conceals the fact he is one of the narrative's heroes.
the reverse is, of course, used with tom himself - harry's trust in tom riddle's memory of framing hagrid in chamber of secrets is established right at the start of the scene by harry's comment that they both have jet-black hair; harry's profound empathy with riddle's past in the memory scenes shown in half-blood prince completely disappears when voldemort returns for his job interview and is "no longer handsome tom riddle".
all of which is to say, i do not vibe with the fact that myrtle is written in the text in a way which presents her appearance as a moral failing. this was the decision behind two key points made in bookbinding - that myrtle doesn't lose weight and it literally doesn't matter, and that beauty standards change and a young woman considered unattractive in the forties was not considered unattractive at other points in human history.
tom notes that she looks like a renaissance painting, specifically da vinci's lady with an ermine:
Tumblr media
and as for current people, i think bella ramsey would work as casting for school-age myrtle - in particular because they are absolutely tiny and it is very important to me that tom is being constantly hen-pecked by someone who barely comes up to his shoulders.
Tumblr media
tom
i find fan-casting tom extremely difficult, in particular because - and i accept this might be unpopular - i find that many of the preferred fan-casts and fan-art interpretations always look far too masculine. [this is particularly the case in tomarry, one of my favourite ships, in which harry "i have anger issues, am a jock, and aspire to be a cop" potter is far too often this tiny, feminine damsel-in-distress, and tom "i would love the chance to be a mammy's boy, spent my teenage years in the library, and create anagrams of my own name for fun" riddle is far too often a pile of twitching muscle intent on snapping him like a twig.]
the things we're told in canon about tom's appearance are that he has dark eyes and black hair and "finely-carved" features, looks a bit like harry, looks exactly like his dilf of a father, and is really hot. we are also told that both he and the later voldemort are very tall, extremely thin, softly spoken, and have a certain elegance of movement. all of which, to me, suggests that we are not dealing with the buff greek god of so many interpretations, but someone who is, in reality, slightly effete.
this fan art by @arcynist:
and this by @erichthaxa:
are 100% how i picture him. especially the being covered in blood part.
so, in terms of fan-casting, find your favourite slightly-androgynous-leaning male model i guess...
