Beast Anon here ^^ Sounds like you're still having a good time with the show so far, I look forward to your thoughts on the rest of the episodes as time passes =p To answer your question... Hmm...hard to pick is an understatement, but, if I had to come up with something here and now I'd say...maybe: 1. Beast - Because he's a perfect example of what I personally like in a tragic character while also having the potential to best anything thrown at him. 2. Jubilee - Because I really liked how they evolved her character over time from the standard fish-out-of-water trope to the mysterious yet likable ward with a massive secret...that secret being she has the hidden ability to literally reset time and space if she dies!...I'm not joking, it's in the comics, it's mind-boggling how it's handled and I love it! xD 3. Wolverine - Because everyone loves Wolverine. 'Nuff said xP As for a favorite villain...erm...maybe Mister Sinister? I'll have to think about that some more, the entire list is subject to change really, but I did really like how they handled Sinister's backstory and how he was handled from that point onwards, even from the start he's a pretty intimidating villain who is 100% antagonistic. While you have villains like Magneto who are more like flawed-anti-heros capable of redemption and lumbering overpowered despots like Apocolypse who go "muhahaha! I am going to step on this basket of puppies! >:D ", Sinister has a sort of balance between the two types that I'm warming towards. I do like the way you write these relationships, and would be happy to read any ideas you put on the page ^^ As for any specific platonic yandere's I'd like to see, well, I suppose it'd be fun to see the dynamic/rivalry between Wolverine and Sabretooth get explored, I'm honestly fine with anything you decide to put down :D Hope these answered your questions sufficiently, you have a great day as well! And, if you celebrate it, Happy Easter! ^^
Good points, Beast Anon!
#1: Jubilee can do WHAT?! That is... so cool. Like, wow. Talk about a plot twist! And I like how they handle her character, too, at least in the Animated Series (I haven't read about... 99.9% of the comics... So I'm pretty much out of my depth with that stuff, unless I watched a video essay on them or watched a video reading them...). And that would be a pretty interesting plot to explore in a platonic yandere setting, too-
#2 Beast is awesome, he's a scientist, he's a lover of literature, he's friendly, he's fluffy, he's nice- The list goes on, but all in all, yes, he's a good character😊
#3 Yep, one way to sum up how we all feel about Wolverine. I myself don't like most of the comic romances he's been in, and while I'm not much a fan of the love triangle in the Animated Series, he is still the guy who will do his best to protect his kids (and adopted friends or partners). So even if he is a jerk at times, and would scare the cr*p put of most people who met him, he's nice on the inside, so I think that's what draws in a good bit of fans
#4 I see what you mean, now that you point it out. Mr. Sinister had a complicated past, started out good, went kinda nuts due to what he did and was trying to accomplish (and possibly failing, if I remember that part correctly? It's been a while since I watched his backstory episode in the Animated Series). And after all of that, he spends the next several decades, if not what, centuries, traumatizing mutants and experimenting on them. Interesting character, looks like a vampire, and is a threat whenever he gets involved. You have Magneto, who is flawed, but more of an anti-hero with his heart in the right direction, but his actions aren't the right way of going about it, and you have Apocalypse, the guy who would knock ice cream out of your hand (or step on puppies, as you said), who is not negotiable on his evil, and does not care about good or evil, just what he wants and how to make it happen... There are other villains and the like, but these three set the flavors you can expect for the show. (Then you have Sabretooth, and well... the Professor somehow saw something in him, or thought he could reach the guy, and the Professor has been known to actually think some people aren't good at all, I think? So he has that going for him. Not to mention the people at Marvel had at one point thought of having this guy become at least an anti-hero, or at best reformed into a hero... All of this to say, secret flavor unlocked: Unstable psychotic villain who somehow has the chance to become better, but the people writing him in the comics sadly won't stick to it or write him in as much of a person) (I hope this made sense😅)
#5 Aaaaaawwww! I'm so glad you like how I write the platonic yanderes! Trying to keep their personalities and vocal tics isn't always easy, but I try my best! Which doing our best is the best we can all do, no matter what!
#6 Hahaha, yes! I enjoy writing for those two, especially since they do have history, they liked each other at some point, and I can write them as brothers. I know that a lot of the fandom ships them, but... I prefer them platonically. I do ship certain characters, I just don't ship those two that way. Wolverine has had I don't know how many love interests, so the idea he can have a platonic relationship with someone who isn't a teenager or the odd person who died, is rather appealing. And it kinda fits in a way, doesn't it? How to explain these two guys, where one (Sabretooth) knows the past of the other (Wolverine) when even the guy he's obsessed (and protective?) of doesn't know it or him, hates him, and will attack him on sight. Cue at least a hundred years of being obsessive, protective, and a stalker towards this one guy. (I may have brainrotted there for a minute; my apologies, but you hopefully see what I'm trying to say, right?)
#6 It was fun talking with you once more, Beast Anon! I can't wait to hear from you again, but take it easy, okay? No rush, no pressure. Everything will happen when it happens😊

Fairy Tail Reread 2023 part 2
It's been hard to sit down and read all of a sudden. Whew. It's quite annoying to want to do this but not having the chance. Sheesh.
Anyways~
Welp, I really am forgetful.
I mean, I like the Galuna Island Arc because it's the first time where we learn about Gray's past. What can I say, Gray's type is right up my alley, trauma included lol.
Moving on to the actual story in this book...
So, Natsu and Lucy are going on their first mission ever. Woot! Natsu behaves like Natsu and gotta love the twisted sense of humour as we're seeing that old saying "to those who love ugly, it looks pretty" - I couldn't think of an English saying that expresses that so, there, literal translation. There's something in the servants that makes me think of Oda's writing (or, drawing?) - the type of gag at least.
Anyway, look, it's a library!! And Natsu gets where he is!!! Wow. Such a difference... I wonder what happened... to make Natsu behave like Natsu here and then later he's a toddler. Seriously, Igneel would cry over how Natsu's being written in 100YQ - good thing he stayed in the canon story and didn't go to the sequel. Or so I hope, I have no clue if he appears once again.
Okay, Natsu finds the book, Daybreak! MC sure is lucky... xD
And then we have the opening for a fight scene. Very tense, very serious, very... Lucy? The way she's entranced in the book cracks me up. And she leaves Natsu HANGING to go read further in a calm corner! I love how shameless she is. But at the same time, seriously? Are you for real, girl???
Good thing that Natsu doesn't seem to mind. He's there to kick ass and that's what he will do. Even though two against one is quite unfair. Natsu was assessing his opponents, also letting them get close enough to hit him, to then give the final punch. No surprises he won.
One thing I quite enjoyed about the worldbuilding in the manga was the trinkets and whatnot, sometimes things that would be so damn useful irl. I wish I had those glasses Lucy wears - I would be finishing a few more books instead of just spending my time reading fanfic. Haha... It also does inspire me to add little artifacts and such while writing - I like to add to the lore lol.
Anyway, we're back to Lucy and the bad guy has caught her. He's such a disgusting dude. Very skeevy, makes my skin crawl and Lucy's too, tbh. Though, well, everyone has their taste at what they like - even lecherous and disgusting people like Count Ebar. YKINMK and all that.
The problem with being a celestial mage though is that if Lucy doesn't have her keys, she's toast. So far, Happy has been coming to her rescue quite a bit. And, is it me or in that mansion, Lucy is the only person with any actual reading comprehension? xD
The actual story of Daybreak is sad. I mean, how it came to be. And then Lucy fights!
How the fuck did Natsu survive the travel with Virgo - we will never know... only shows how super-human he kind of is... ('nuff said for now...)
But the battle was won, the Count was punished (and lost his remaining hair) as well as the book.
Good on Lucy, to give the punchline - you're just a secondary character - she's quite proud of completing her first mission, she's an actual member of Fairy Tail.
Then, we finally get the actual story of the book. Seriously, so much lack of communication and empathy. I mean, as a child who was kind of abandoned by his father, then seeing him chop off his hand, no discernible reason, and after writing such a pitiful book - a shameful book, even! - Kaby really wasn't very forgiving of his father. Going to the extent of really ignoring the words his bedridden father was telling him.
Lucy did great with unlocking the hidden words. Daybreak became Dear Kaby and I like the magic here. All the potential, the wonder and whimsy that is shown to us. How in the end, love does end up speaking louder. I'm a sap so yeah, this is touching.
Natsu waving off the fee - and seeing Lucy basically seeing the jewels gaining wings and flying away from her grasp, that made me laugh a bit.
And here we learn yet another important thing about Lucy. Her goal is to write a novel too, she wants to be a writer. In a way, I totally relate with the cringe of someone irl seeing what I've written.
Hang in there, Lucy! 😂
Next chapter: we're introduced to Erza!
So the chapter begins with Lucy adjusting to life at the guild. All the missions one can choose from are on the mission board and we also get to see a bit more of the background characters.
Mirajane tells Lucy that the Master is away for an important meeting and, just like that, we're given information of what's coming towards us. More of the magical artifacts (this magical pen is just neat!) and that's a small touch I really like. It helped quite a bit with settling the world we're in. Anyway, exposition about how the world is organized - with the guilds and whatnot - and Natsu gives Lucy a fucking scare!
Tumblr media
His face cracks me up every time. He's such an asshole. 😂
He wants to team up with Lucy but Gray and Loke scoff at how badly served she would be. And it's back to reinforcing Gray and Natsu's rivalry and Gray's penchant for losing his clothes.
Natsu and Gray fight. Their rivalry was such an important element at the beginning, as well as a comic relief moment. Loke tries to flirt with Lucy but upon realizing she's a celestial mage, he's running away as if the hounds of hell were at his heels. This bit of foreshadowing is well-played, I find. It had happened already but twice is a pattern and it makes one wonder "wtf is wrong with him?" but then he comes back with urgent news.
Erza is back!
The faces of horror will never cease to make me laugh.
Next thing we know, the air in the guild has changed. And we get to meet another very important character.
Erza Scarlett.
Girl, you're insane! 😆 Such a badass.
Most of the members of the guild barely dare to breathe with her there. She definitely imposes respect.
Tumblr media
The boys here make me laugh. It is quite a common occurrence in the beginning but throughout the story, their relationship changes and they do become friends. In the meantime, it's hilarious to me seeing how they change completely the moment Erza is mentioned.
Lucy (and us readers) is shocked! Natsu who, so far, has been both assured and goofy - he acts in this very out-of-character way now. And Mira isn't that good at drawing. 😂
Back to business. Erza has something to propose, she needs Gray and Natsu's help. A huge shocker because Erza is pretty much at the top of the guild, powers-wise, so why would she need them?
Mirajane's mumblings surprise Lucy but, well, she might be new but she trusts her elder and if Mira says that could be the strongest team at the guild, then it most certainly might be!
Gray's self-awareness...
Tumblr media
(Also, it might be just me but he looks cute here...)
And Natsu is goofy.
Tumblr media
At him being topless I just wondered if Gray wasn't being a bad influence already. Also, I realize I didn't remember that scar he has on his neck. Then again, when I visualize Natsu he's wearing the scarf...
Lucy looks cute in Natsu's clothes. Her "I'm so done with you" expression makes me smile a lot. Happy's such a troll.
And for the end of the chapter, we have a small yet ominous introduction to what certainly is the bad guys.
OoOoO
So yeah, here we go for the Lullaby Arc! I feel like I should be listening to the OST, because the music really helps with the whole ambiance.
///\\\
Gotta love how full of themselves both Natsu and Gray are. Of course that the whole rivalry is at play here but Mira sure set Lucy up. However, she was so right in toying with them. Just saying "Erza" and the boys were all buddy-buddy. Very well-done!
Erza sure is an exaggerated person. All that luggage. Sure, she can carry it all but, goodness. There's so. much. stuff!! Mte, Lucy, mte.
Then a small touch at "serious business" with setting up a match, which Natsu is sure to win. Of course...
And then the dichotomy: Natsu all fired up vs Natsu all passed out.
It's a funny gag.
Also Erza is tough and she likes to spread some tough love too. Poor Natsu, no wonder he got K.O. - how does he have the gall to challenge her and say he's going to defeat her when this also happens? Well, he's in a moving train but still.
The trepidation in Lucy's voice while addressing Erza... totally understandable to happen at this point but fun to see how their relationship evolves.
Then we have Gray demonstrate his powers and Lucy has that lightbulb moment as to why they are so at odds. Seriously, that's the foundation of things for me and I'm fine with it, haha.
Now with a passed-out Natsu, Erza gets down to business. She relays what she heard - and it's bad news. A dark guild is never good news, this is what we're learning. More so when they can get their hands on dark spells and use them.
The conversation is so serious that everyone forgets Natsu - even Happy! And the train is moving again so he's kind of defenseless. And we meet the next character.
Ahh, Erza is so tough that punishment is hitting. Why did she ask Lucy for that? I can't help but chuckle at the absurdity of the situation because on the one hand, there is serious and important stuff happening but at the same time, all the Fairy Tail mages are super weird. Even Erza who looks so serious and straight-laced is so silly!
But back to the serious matters, Kageyama is with a big conversation about legal guilds and illegal ones and the indoctrination seems to have been successful to him. And as Natsu is in such a low shape, he has the chance to kick him and have high airs. But Natsu does fight back, when the train stops. And we get a glimpse at the flute though we do not know its importance at first.
Natsu is crazy. He jumped out of the train because it's better to face death than to stay in that shitty contraption for another second. Lucky for him, his friends are there. And what's better to cushion a fall than your rival/friend's forehead? The bonk noise their heads made was enough to incapacitate a normal human. Fortunately the insanity coursing through both Natsu and Gray's bodies saves them from that fate.
Erza was quite unreasonable though. Natsu was totally out of it and they, idk, left the train while having the conversation - how was Natsu supposed to know he had to apprehend Kageyama? As far as Natsu knew, the dude was just an asshole from a dark guild and while dark mages should be stopped or whatever, he wouldn't have much of a leg to stand on if he started apprehending all the assholes that crossed his path, right? (Lucy noticed it but, rightfully, didn't dare say a thing)
Lucy's bookish knowledge allows her to connect the dots. And that makes our friends have a new goal.
The bad guys are making their move and we now have a better realization of the stakes. It's a race against time!
Everyone is moving towards the most logical place.
The Oshibana Station.
I find that this Erza from the beginning was so awkward and funny. Love how tough she is in her own way of being. I ask you a question and you don't answer? Forehead knock is the answer! xD
Now Lucy understands the respect (yes, we'll call it that) everyone has for Erza even further. So scary. xD
And before nothing, they're facing the bad guys. And learn their actual plan to spread the sound of the Lullaby.
Many fights are about to begin and, as Natsu said, at least now he's in firm land and the terrain is a bit more leveled.
Yet, Eligoal seems to have something more up his sleeve. It doesn't look like it's going to be easy...
And the book ends here.
OoOoOoO
I was going to ramble about the whole Lullaby arc but this book's ramble has taken me two weeks too long to write (RL is a mess rn) and so I'm doing this book by book, apparently? Or, maybe not. I'm just rambling about silliness so yeah.
It's quite noticeable how the characters were still at the early stages, their quirks and whatnot still being defined, the art was kind of charming and the silliness and moments where you just go "wtf?" abounded a bit. It's nice. I'm quite fond of this beginning.
@watcher-ofthe-sky hope your reread is going better than mine. Or at least faster.
Hopefully, will have time to go through the next book sooner. But I can say that rereading this is making me smile and in a way find my love for the characters back again. Super needed that. And a good revision of the characters, as I need to have them present for the wack-ass AUs I'm placing them in. 😅

For today, I thought I would share a bit of a super early days WIP idea that won’t leave me alone, so I suppose it’s very likely to be my next long story, after I finish Upside Downtime and Down to Earth, which is drawing close now.
It’ll be an early canon divergence story, where Sarai survives, causing a greater rift between Harrow and Viren as the years pass, culminating in civil war, Harrow being killed and Viren taking throne of Katolis. Sarai flees to Xadia with her boys, since Ezran has a big ol’ target on his back, and they find shelter and more in Rayla’s childhood treehouse. Starring Sarai, Callum, Ezran, Rayla, Runaan and Ethari. ‘To a Halt’ is just a working title, may change.
I’ll share a few carefully-cropped-to-be-non-spoilery sketches, and an excerpt from when Rayla first encounters the little human family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rayla heard the voices from the meadow up ahead before she saw anyone… just little bits of things.
“Callum… they like it snug!”
“-told me! You keep not belie-”
“Ez! Raccoons! Nuff said!”
“-boys not-”
Rayla wanted to know what a raccoon was, and people didn’t always tell her things, and besides, assassins were supposed to be sneaky.
So, she dropped to the ground, creeping forward, making no sound.
The voices got clearer, as she got closer.
There were three people there, a woman and two boys, she thought, one a lot younger than her. She didn’t recognize them, which was weird, she knew everyone in the Silvergrove. And they talked all funny.
“Mom, we can stay for a bit longer, right?” The older boy. “It’s so nice here.” A pause, before he spoke again, and it was like… there was something more in what he said. Something heavy. “And… Ez really likes it here.”
‘Moooom’. All drawn out and weird.
“We have to get going soon.” The… mom. She sounded worried, even though it was a nice evening and the Moonshadow watched over this area and it was safe as anything, here.
“But the poofies need their home! It’ll be dark soon, and we’re almost done! And I can understand the poofies and am a really good delegator, and Callum is a really good grass-weaver, so it works out to a top-notch poofie-house-team!” The younger boy. He wasn’t that young though, and who knew the word ‘delegator’, but not what an adoraburr was?
He sounded sweet though, wanting to make a house for the adoraburrs. She did sometimes, too. But one Rayla had not made a good poofie-house-team.
Maybe she could join theirs?
Pfft.
She was 15, and training to be an assassin and that thought had really popped into her head?
“We’ll be quick, Ez. Mom is right, we can’t stay.” The older boy… Callum… sounded sad about it. Maybe they needed shelter? Maybe they were Earthblood and that’s why they talked all weird? They definitely didn’t sound Sunfire, but Earthblood elves passed through here sometimes, she knew, she had just never met one. “The poofies will be okay. They live here.”
The younger boy sniffled. “They’re lucky. Living here. Living… anywhere.”
“Hey!” The older boy again, an illusion of being happy. But Rayla could tell he was scared. “We’ll be okay, too. We’ll live somewhere. Someday. I’ll weave you a big house made of grass. This little house is just practice for the big one that we’ll live in, one day!”
Rayla’s heart hurt for the sweet, wee boy without a home and his big brother being so brave for him, and she stood up before she could think, because of course they could have a place to live, at least for a bit, Ethari would never turn away anyone- “Hey, you can stay with us-”
A lot of things happened at once.

hello! i uhm well so… i wanted to send in an anonymous ask but i don’t think it’ll let me say as much as i wanted to say, so uhm… im gonna carefully write this post and hopefully it’ll make you happier!! ahah so basically first of all, congrats on 10k!! you deserve this and much much much much mUCH more!! im a new follower… it’s been a few weeks since i chanced upon your tumblr account, and i just saw that you had a twitter account and now i follow you on there and here as well, and well!! hehe im so happy i decided to follow you cause i just love your art style (ill talk about this in a bit fasdf im sorry this is gonna get like really really really long;;) and your comics. but anyways, thank you for working so hard!! i have like zero artistic capability so people who can draw really well just amaze me like woah…. woAH!!! WOAH!!!! WOAH WOW WOW OH MY GOD !!! HOLY SHIT !!! like oh my god the talent, the artistry, the beauty, the love, the etherealness. no but seriously like artists amaze me, and your art is so precious and pretty and i just LOVE how you draw in general. like i personally will never probably get the work that goes into developing an art style that like you are okay with and then drawing and creating ocs and then like coloring and shading and then like line work, but also like other features like hands and bodies and then like the face and the hair as well, so like thank you for your hard work!! like really really really thank you for your hard work ahsdjkfahsdfh
oki but like. this is truly getting longer than i expected, i am sorry if this creepy;; ahskjfahsdf but anyways, you’re really one of my favorite artists ever i think mhm cause !! i just really adore the way you draw like everything like !!! and i also adore how you color things like it’s really unique ( or well at least to me it is ). the way you draw eyes is extremely unique and i just really really really really love it like!! idk how to explain it but like it’s so pretty and i love how you color the eyes like ??? it’s like kinda a gradient towards the inside??? like it’s a darker color to the inside color lines the outer part of the eye and then like a lighter color is inside and then a small white + black circle-like thingy!! and i just. im in love. hfsjkdhfjshdf and also the way you draw the noses and ears ( like you draw ears so well and prettily and lovely ) !! like it’s so cool and just!! you draw hands really prettily too and your clothing is always like on POINT! like the way you color the clothings and htne draw it and all the little details and shadings like … oh my god hKJSDHFSD i just love it so very much!! and i love when you do like chibi(?) form when you make comics. i think it’s the cutest thing ever and im once again so very much in love hKJSHDFDSf like the blush!! and like the eyebrows and like the small circular hands in chibi form. it’s so very cute!! and like your art is just super expressive like you express the emotions of the people who draw so well in your art and i find that wonderful and fascinating hSKJDFHKSJHDf anyways. thank you for always working so hard and for giving me the honor to look at your art and thank you for posting your art!! hehe and anyways im sorry this is really long lmao HKSJDFHKSHD please do not feel the need to post this ahsjkfhkasjdhf it got super long ;; im super sorry!! but once again thank you for your hard work and i really truly sincerely love your art!!
oh shit wait I FORGOT SOMETHING !! I LOVE THE LIGHTING IN YOUR ART !! AND I LOVE HOW YOU UTILIZE THE COLOR WHITE IN YOUR ART LIKE I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! ALRIGHT IM REALLY SORRY HSDKJFHKSDJFHSKJDHF
Tumblr media
oh,,,omg…ive received a lot of messages on here but this one is just on a whole other level,, ITS IN THE STRATOSPHERE :OOO!! i dont even know where to begin but first off THANK YOUU ??? OMG????? LOL DA HECK THIS IS SO NICE AND SWEET??? WHO RAISED YOU TO BE SO KIND!!! i was smiling so hard the entire time while reading this and each sentence made my smile grow even wider omg i will never get over this. please ive read this like 3 times over and over the best way i could describe my emotions while reading this is it looks like an exponential graph skyrocketing up TOT <3
i will now address every sentence you made in a bulleted list please join me under the cut
*loses self composure* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! if i could manifest my gratefulness right now it would be the size of the sUN omg i seriously cant tell you how happy this made me cAN I KITH YOU??? *gently kiths*
*coughs* asdsj moving on
the acknowledgement of all the work that goes into creating ??? omg you are a true art enthusiast :,) i too overanalyze my favorite artists styles and can spend literally hours just looking at them in awe so dont feel bad about the long message i love every sentence you wrote TOT and yeah *looks back* it took a long time to get where i am now but im happy where my current level is at! earlier this year i would say my style was at the lizard stage but now i can comfortably say it is at the monkey with a hat stage :D
“favorite artists ever“ *FALLS BACKWARDS* *ANGELS SINGING AS THEY CARRY MY SOUL TO THE HEAVENS* OMGGGGG <333 nuff said that was the final blow
and reading the whole second paragraph, i was CONVINCED that you knew my own style better than i did 0_O like the way you described how i draw eyes i had to look back at my own stuff to check if it was true shdfjkh
and “unique” *doubles over* *clutches heart* thats one of my weaknesses TOT <3 that means so much to me im sure i mentioned this before but i think my styles pretty generic :,0 so hearing this makes me super happy (but i feel like every creator thinks that so its all good :D)
and noses, ears, and hands!!! bruv all the detail you pay attention to is just *ugly sobbing* im so touched omg TOT i love drawing ears and hands :,)
and thank you clothing is my favorite part to shade!!! just getting in all those folds is *clenches fist*,,,so satisfying
and thank you so much for loving the chibis TOT in all honesty i just do most of my comics in chibi cause im too lazy to draw them in my regular style skdskd the blush, eyebrows, and circle hands are critical to make a good chibi TVT circle hands >>> regular hands
and expressions!!!! omg you really think that?? bruv thats so sweet oh my god. i only know how to draw like 3 types of smiles TOT i think the fact that when i draw a certain expression i also emulate expression on my own face helps somehow ahahaaa
AND AAA THANK YOU!!! i love using white lighting it makes the colors pOP 0_o (although lately i have been lazy in using it adfsjd) (and i also have too many arts with just white backgrounds TOT)
and no please dont apologize!!! thank you so much for sending such a long heartfelt message omg it made me really really really really really happy T_T i will continue to work hard and get better and post more art!!! (ง •̀_•́)ง as soon as my sats and college applications are over my power limiters will be gone and i will draw myself into an oblivion :D
(also sorry this took so long to answer i wanted to accurately show my gratitude and appreciation for your message *tears up*)

Alright I got tagged by at least FIVE people, so... I’ll do EVERY set of questions, and the person who asked them is getting tagged so y’all have references as to who I’m referring to. (By the way, this is a SUPER LONG post.)
Let's get this goin’. Questions are all under the picture of Kelsey Colbert, and nicely divided by pictures of Kelsey Colbert:
Tumblr media
@six-fragile-dreams:
1) How are you today? -Pretty chill. Pro’ly caught a cold, but I can get through it.
2) Favourite animals, colours and artist? -Owls -Monochrome Schemes/Galaxy Schemes/Pastel Pink/Charcoal Black -Kelsey Colbert, ‘nuff said.
3) What's your favourite conspiracy theory? -Aliens and call me lame for it but I will only believe either side with scientific evidence presented to me.
4) Do you like chocolate? -Yes, yes I do.
5) Coffee or Tea? -Coffee, all day, every day.
6) Favourite scent and flavour? -I love vanilla scented things. Also, cherry blossoms. -Coffee flavored things are nice, but really... anything overtly sweet like candied pecans is nice too.
7) What's your favourite genre? -Of literature? Poetry. -Of music? “Classical” (Baroque/Classical/Romantic) and Jazz
8) Biggest inspirations? -I’ll leave this one blank because... it is such a long list...
9) Favourite perfume or body spray? (or any other thing like that) -Japanese Cherry Blossom and Warm Vanilla Sugar from Bath & Body Works. Call me basic.
10) List your 5 favourite artists! -Kelsey Colbert -Taylor Swift -Lauren Daigle -Ariana Grande -Adele
Tumblr media
@frogs-in-clogs:
What instruments can you/ do you wish you could play? -I answered a whole ask about this. Click here for that.
Do you like audiobooks? -Nope. I prefer having the actual book in my hand.
Favourite board game? -I’m more of a card game gal. Magic the Gathering, Cardfight! Vanguard, FutureCard Buddyfight, or die by my blade.
Have you ever broken a bone? -Yep! I broke it playing softball. Broke the middle finger on my left hand.
Would you rather live in a city or a village? -A mix of both is the best thing for me. A not so populated city, but urbanized enough for me to be happy. But if I HAD to pick, probably a city.

The Book Club: My Analysis
I just posted a long look at the ATOM analysis but I couldn't comment on their posts because it would have been too confusing.  Here is where I will make comments to their analysis.  As always my comments in parenthesis and italicized.
In this first post, notice that Abby isn’t looking for big themes and symbols-although she did catch the big ones- instead she is picking out single words and short phrases and drawing analogies to Darren. This is the literature version of cutting up an already short video into 1-2 seconds, slowing it down for drama and making it a gif. It’s how you distort the truth.
**********************************************
December 26, 2019 by this is a submission to ajw (X)
Submission from a friend (I posted my brief thoughts at the end). Major spoilers below. Scroll past if you haven’t read and don’t want to know.
First off, just in the note to the readers, I knew this book was going to be full of some good stuff.
Obviously, all interpretations are my own, after my first read through.
“A tale of magic follows a group of young fairies as they fight for acceptance in an oppressive world where magic is outlawed and despised. This story is very close to my heart, and writing it was the most challenging and emotional process I’ve experienced as an author to date. …… I hope it encourages and comforts anyone who may be fighting their own battle for acceptance and equality.”
Fairies= anyone feeling different or told they can’t be who they are, perhaps including the LGBT community? Hmm.. Close to his heart? What closer to his heart than the reality he’s living?  (Yes, it is definitely the LGBTQ community. If you couldn’t tell from reading the story Chris says “For me, the magic in A Tale of Magic is an allegory for being gay.” and faires are the people who have magical abilities. This is a story he calls “close to my heart”  because he is a gay man who grew up in a town that is now represented by Devin “the dunce” Nunes- so super fake-religious, judgemental and intolerant. He’s been getting mail from gay kids for a decade and he wrote a story to tell his truth and Abby is turning it into a story about Darren and the reality she has created for Chris to be living)
“If we want to change the world’s opinion it must be encouraged, not forced– and nothing encourages people like a good spectacle.”
Hmm… a spectacle? Sounds familiar. You can’t force anyone to believe anything, but it can be encouraged by opening your eyes to a good spectacle, like say a wedding, and realizing that it just doesn’t make sense if you open your eyes. Nuff said. (Except in this case Mrs. Weatherberry is saying they need to encourage people to accept magic not force them to and a good spectacle is the best way to encourage change. For this to be a reference to the wedding, Chris would have to be happy about the wedding).
One of the books that Brystal comes across is by Daisy Peppernickel. I think that speaks for itself. It’s clearly known that Daisy is a certain someone’s nickname, especially used by the part of his fans that believe in Daisy. (This is stupid. It’s a silly, British-sounding name- not a reference to Darren. I can’t imagine a Chris celebrating the fandom’s fetishization of Darren’s efferent movements by labeling it “Daisy”)
“.. each author’s cause of death was EXECUTED FOR CONSPIRACY AGAINS THE KINGDOM. … It was a graveyard for truth and an archive of people the Justices had silenced.”
Deleted tweets, accounts vanishing into thin air. This sounds a lot like the conspiracies against (str8) fandom. It’s no secret that people have been silenced. (yes, deleted tweets, accounts vanishing in thin air (what?) are exactly conspiracy against the fandom.  Both Chris and Darren are super worried about a handful of fans in the Str8 fandom.  You guys MATTER so much Chris included you in his book. He loves you, dudes).
“All the books in the secret room were written by people who felt and thought exactly like she did, by people who questioned information, who criticized social restrictions, who challenged the systems set in place, and who weren’t afraid to make their ideas known.”
Questioning information? Challenging the system? Not afraid to make their ideas known? Can’t think of anybody that might do that. (It’s almost like Chris was talking about all the brave people who push back against society’s unfair treatment of the disenfranchised and minority persons who are discriminated against whether that is because of their race, nationality, gender, age or income. I know for a FACT he was NOT talking about the cc fandom. who do not do these things for the better good of society but rather for their own needs. Chris was honoring people like Mrs. Weatherberry and MLK, Rosa Parks, Harvey Milk,, people who push boundaries to make positive changes for the good of all people. What you all do is petty and based not on genuine inconsistencies in the system but rather your own refusal to accept that you are wrong and have always been wrong.)
“Personally, I think life is way to complicated for anyone’s life to be set in stone.”
Even though D seems to be in a death sentence, there’s way more to life and his fate is not set in stone. C believes in his man, and knows he can overcome this. (Um what?)
“Sometimes as  a survival method, fairies suppress their magic so deep within themselves that it becomes extremely difficult to reach it.”
This reminds me of D’s dudebro persona that he brings out. He’s suppressing himself so far that at times he’ll turn himself into a different caricature of himself. We all know Daisy is in there somewhere under the layers of D-bag. (LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. You mean when Darren is acting exactly like Darren?  People are like onions, they have layers. Dude bro is one of Darren’s layers. Not understanding that Darren is who Darren proves that you aren’t are the one who isn’t actually paying attention. It’s so obvious )
“It’s very hard watching someone you love in so much pain.”
C watching the person he loves get knocked down over and over, he’s speaking directly from his own experience here. (How do you know this? Chris has never once suggested he finds life difficult right now or that he is in pain.  It’s almost like you made it up)
“Horence had the misfortune of falling in love with a witch. … Naturally, such a relationship was forbidden, so for over a decade, Horence and the witch carried on a secret affair. When Horence’s soldiers discovered the relationship, the men betrayed their commander. They burned Horence at the stake and forced the witch to watch it happen.”
Using LGBT to equal ‘magical’ (As I’ve found countless references I haven’t even put in here) D fell in love with someone magical (gay), and their relationship was forbidden and secret. Once their secret was out, the team made D pay for it and C had to watch it all go down with nothing that he could do. (Except throw all his angst into his books ;) ) (Good job Abby- you got the most obvious allegory. The one that Chris acknowledged  “For me, the magic in A Tale of Magic is an allegory for being gay.” The rest of your nonsense is silly- the secret isn’t out and nobody except Abby has ever suggested anyone is making Darren or Chris pay anything).
“We must pity the people who close to hate, Brystal. Their lives will never be as meaningful as those of the people who choose to love.”
The pathetic souls that do nothing but hate on C C and spread hate will never have as meaningful of life as those that chose to love and support our boys. (Um...I guess you don’t believe in coincidences but you believe in Karma. That doesn’t make a lot of sense. I am 100% positive that karma will get the people who don’t support cc. Both Chris and Darren have both denied a relationship and neither has ever suggested any of it is true).
“We all know how terrible keeping a secret can feel. Secrets are like parasites, the longer you keep them inside you, the more damage they cause.”
The longer D is force to stay closeted, the more damage it does to him.
“If we had had everything we wanted then, we might never have found what we needed now.”
This to me feels like C is actually a little bit thankful for the bumps in the road. He’s trying to look on the bright side. If things had always been easy for them, they might have taken it for granted. Everything they’ve been through has only made them stronger. If they can get through all of this shit alive, they can make it through absolutely anything. (What twisted mind writes crisscolfer so that Darren’s life is a living hell with literally nobody to trust or on his side except his one true love and his mommy and daddy but also Chris is happy to have been put through the “bumps” in the road? )
“She dreamed the fairy was repeatedly knocked to the ground by a ferocious monster in a fur coat and snowflake crown.”
The ferocious monster in a fur coat? Makes me think of another monster that wears a fur coat. Shade. (Chris is a vindictive dick when he writes?)
“You can stop pretending, Brystal. I know you’re aware of much more than you’re letting on.”
C knows that we know. He’s not living under a rock. (yes, this is exactly the kind of sentence anyone would add to make sure your fandom knows that you are on to them.  I agree- Chris is sending you messages of support because though all of this, he’s worried about you).
“I don’t know about you guys, but I refuse to sit back and let a frosty old witch take Madame Weatherberry away from us.”
Frosty old witch= Obviously M (wait I thought Mia was the monster in a fur coat and crown? She can’t be all the villians)
“Do you guys know what your love languages are? Mine is quality time. It used to be physical touch, but that wasn’t working very well, so I had to change it. People are so picky about personal space and–”
C cherishes any quality time that he gets to have with D, since it’s not always available. (I can’t.... the 5 love languages are specific and about how you communicate with other people. You don’t pick a love language based on what is going on in your life.)
“Sometimes good people do bad things for the right reasons.”
I have this bookmarked, along with some other passages about the Snow Queen / Mrs. Weatherberry. I know that there’s /some/ significance around this, but I haven’t fully figured out exactly what all it symbolizes. I have a few ideas, but nothing really seems to line up completely to me. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it at some point! (The significance is that Brystal has to made a tough decision to do something that at first glance is reprehensible but is much more complicated than that. Sometimes- like in war- people do bad things for the right reason)
I think those are the big things that I’ve bookmarked. There’s so much more I could talk about, but I’m afraid it would start to not make any sense if I just started rambling, so I decided to go off of passages from the book and my thoughts on why I think they’re significant or tie into C C.
You can feel free to just keep this for yourself, or post it at a later date, or take pieces parts to post. Whatever you want!
********************
ajw adds:  know I’ve been really bad about posting on the book. I saved this submission because I thought it was brilliant and a lot of great insights.
My opinion on the Madame W/Horence/Ice Queen? C is Madame W/Ice Queen and D is Horence. I too thought frosty old queen at first referred to m. But once the twist was revealed I’m convinced it’s c and his dual personality like the twins. He is a Gemini as he likes to remind us. It’s his struggle between being happy with the love he was blessed with and his desire to destroy for the people that have so gravely hurt them.
The quote above to think about most.
Sometimes good people do bad things for the right reasons
That’s him talking about their Pr life and I’d guess directly addressing the fraud in NOLA. He’s believed in d and he wants us to believe in him too.  (No, it is just a plot point in a story about “good and bad” written for kids)

Sometime in the first few months of 2000, I dropped Stan Lee a line saying I’d love to do some work for Stan Lee Media, Stan’s well-publicized and multi-staffed dot-com company, if he could ever use me. He replied that, while he’d like to work with me again, I would’ve had to be around L.A. to work for SLM, but that, by coincidence, he really needed a writer to work with him on the SPIDER-MAN comic strip… to plot out and do the first-draft script of the seven-days-a-week King Features strip. I said that sounded fine to me (even though I’d never really been wild about writing Spidey compared to the F.F., Avengers, Conan, etc.). He replied with a chuckle that maybe I should wait till I heard his offer, because the money was so minuscule… just $300 a week. I laughed, and told him that he had no idea how little money it cost me to live on my 40-acre place in the middle of South Carolina. The mortgage and both our vehicles were paid off, so Dann and I had no expenses except what we spent month-to-month. So a deal was quickly struck, and I went to work, with my first strip (a Monday, of course) appearing on July 17, 2000.
As it turned out, although I never got a raise in 18 1/2 years I basically ghost-wrote the strip (though, until recent years, with his often hands-on editing), it was a great gig. I spent maybe two days a month writing four weeks’ worth of strips, and another day 2 or 3 times a year doing outlines for upcoming storylines.
After Stan cut back his activities a few years ago, following installation of his pacemaker, etc., I worked primarily with his longtime assistant, Michael Kelly, with some indirect verbal input from Stan, and in some ways I liked that even better, since Stan and I were only about 80% on the same page as to what made a good comic strip. Despite his well-known (and correct) views on how important the writing was to the success of Marvel Comics from 1961 on, he would often talk about how it was the artwork that sold the strip. I didn’t think that reflected the realities of the situation, particularly after John Romita left the strip a few years after it began, and as the printing of the strips grew smaller and smaller. Stan’s brother Larry Lieber was a good journeyman penciler (and Alex Saviuk considerably better), but the artists didn’t really have the scope, especially in the dailies, to do the kind of artwork that was going to excite readers the way, say, Milt Caniff once had in Terry and the Pirates. The sight of Spidey or Dr. Octopus in a strip might draw people in, but the writing had to bring people back, day after day, since Spidey and Peter and MJ and Doc Ock would always look basically the same, squeezed into small panels–with no “full-page spreads” like in the comicbooks. And yes, I wrote a bit more text and dialogue than he did… but that was partly because, otherwise, I wasn’t sure people could really follow the strip from day to day… or at least, no new readers would be brought in if it was hard to start reading the strip at any given point.
Mostly, though, Stan and I got along fine. For the most part, he liked what I submitted, accepted most (not all) of my ideas for stories… and until a few years ago often “suggested” (or insisted upon) alterations in them. For some years, he would rewrite a panel or balloon here and there, or even more… while other dailies or Sundays would sail through without a single word change.
The major change I tried to effect, after the first “Spider-Man” movie, was to go back to a time when MJ and Peter weren’t married. Stan agreed, and seemed halfway enthusiastic about the change at first, and we did one whole storyline (involving Electro) that way. But then Stan changed his mind, and I saw at once that I wouldn’t be able to change it back. So I wrote a “Dallas”-type scene in which Peter woke up (after going to sleep in Aunt May’s apartment as a single young man) to find himself married (again) to Mary Jane… and that’s the way we kept it from then on. Actually, I was increasingly happy with that, as an alternative to the bouncing around of the comicbooks, in which MJ and Peter totally forgot each other and their marriage, and who-knows-what occurred. Left increasingly to my own devices, and building on MJ’s modeling career in the comicbooks, I gradually took her from working in a computer store to becoming a Broadway star and movie actress, playing a super-heroine called “Marvella” (before the female Captain Marvel was a big deal, or maybe even was around at all)…but I kept her and Peter, somewhat incongruously, in their relatively small Manhattan apartment (except when they were in L.A., of course)… although they occasionally shopped around for something bigger.
In recent years, I had taken increasingly to using guest stars: Wolverine, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Ant-Man, most recently Iron Fist and Luke Cage. We never bothered to try to follow the current Marvel continuity, which Stan didn’t want to do… the more so, I suppose, as from time to time it was given increasingly to violent wrenches and re-starts, such as when MJ and Peter were abruptly uncoupled. If there were eventually several Spider-Man universes in the comics (with different Spider-Men, a Spider-Girl, whatever), well, our comic strip universe was yet another one… just about the only one, in recent years, in which Peter and MJ were a married couple, continuing the original direction of decades of the comicbooks. We were all kind of proud of that.
When the strip died (i.e., was killed), the Mammon Theatre where MJ’s hit play was running was shuttered by damage (in a Spidey-related fight, of course), and “Marvella II” had flopped, so the two of them took off to Australia for a vacation, and I wrote a couple of weeks of a continuity (along with a full outline approved by Michael Kelly) involving the villain the Kangaroo. Then Marvel decided to kill the strip and not print the final couple of weeks, and I declined to rewrite the last published strip or two to turn it into a “goodbye” strip. My feeling was that I had accepted the snuffing of the strip, and didn’t take it personally… it was just a business move (although when I was told the strip was being killed I wasn’t told—perhaps because those who informed me didn’t know–that Marvel was planning to either revive the strip with a new team or to start a new strip that might not be a Spidey strip per se, but more the equivalent of DC’s latter-day successor to its Superman strip, The World’s Greatest Heroes, which had featured the whole panoply of DC heroes). I felt that I had written what I had written for the strip, and they were welcome to do whatever they wanted to with the script (as long as I was paid for what I had done, naturally), but I preferred never to touch it again. When I’m done with something, I’m done with something.
Alex Saviuk, bless him, graciously reworked the final strip to show the two of us in it, and to add a “‘Nuff Said!” headline on the Daily Bugle. He was perhaps a better sport about things than I was… and I admire him for that, since he had spent well over two decades penciling the Sunday Spider-Man and then had only recently been promoted to seven-days-a-week penciler… only to see the strip almost immediately canceled so that he was out of a regular gig. I hope he finds one. He deserves it.
Naturally, I was sorry to see the strip end (the more so because it signaled the finale of the only long-lasting adventure strip launched in the past half century), just at the time when I could finally have begun to receive on-strip credit for the work I did… although of course I did have that for two years on the Conan the Barbarian comic strip at the end of the 1970s. But at least, once Stan wrote vaguely, maybe a decade ago, in his introduction to the hardcover volume Marvel Visionaries: Roy Thomas, that I “help[ed]” him with the Spidey strip, everybody with half a brain knew what I was contributing to the strip anyway. That didn’t bother Stan, and it didn’t bother me. The strip was Stan’s, and I was happy to co-write or write it under his name… although I wouldn’t have been willing to go on writing it anonymously once he had passed on, had that alternative been suggested to me.
Working with Stan and Michael Kelly (as well as with Larry, Alex, and the ever-amiable Joe Sinnott–with Joe spelled occasionally by Jim Amash or Terry Austin) on the Spider-Man strip was an enjoyable experience, and I’m grateful to Stan for offering me that “pittance” back in 2000. The strip became the last of our many collaborations of one sort or other, which began when, in early July of 1965, I inherited a Modeling with Millie story that he had previously talked over (I suppose) with penciler Stan Goldberg.
Best wishes,
Roy Thomas
The LAST SPIDER-MAN Daily newspaper strip! It’s been a fabulous time for me being part of such an iconic character for so long. I’ve drawn Spider-Man in comics and newspapers for 32 years in a row and unless I get another crack at him NEXT year that run will come to an end. But I am digressing a bit; I’m here to talk about the newspaper strip which for me OFFICIALLY started in the spring of 1977 probably around April-May. I say OFFICIALLY because back in 1980 , John Romita, Sr. who was still drawing the entire strip at that time called me and asked if I had the time to ghost lay out some Sunday strips for him since he was incredibly busy with everything else he had on his plate for Marvel. John lived ( and still lives, I believe ) in the town next to mine on Long Island when I was there and I actually met him about 10 years earlier since I was in high school with his sons. ( that’s right, I went to high school with JR, Jr.— he IS four years younger than me to the day and when I was a senior he was a freshman and today looks 20 years younger than me!) I was in a club in school with the older son Victor who over time found out I was interested in drawing comics and came to me one day and said “… my father draws comics — would you like to meet him?” Of course I knew that but I would never impose. We met soon after that. What happened after that is another story!
BACK TO THE STRIP: I did at least 4 Sunday layouts for John on vellum tracing paper and he took it to the next level and beyond yet saving him a ton of time. I was really happy and excited just to be called to assist him , first of all, and then get the privilege and honor of working with one of my comic book artist “heroes”. IDW just recently published that volume of reprints and it was fun to see our collaborations again.
FORWARD to 1997: Ralph Macchio at Marvel calls me up and asks if I would be interested in penciling the Spider-Man Sunday strip since fill-in penciler old time artist Fred Kida wanted to leave. Of course I agreed — i would get to work directly with Stan Lee and Joe Sinnott! I put a package together of my Web Of Spider-Man and Spider-Man Adventures books and sent them to Stan. His assistant Mike Kelly called a few days later and said Stan liked the work but wanted to see how I would handle a “horizontal” strip in a six panel grid format. I admit I was a bit surprised by that request since with my 20 years of experience at that time I figured i showed what I can do in just the comic books. But I went ahead and penciled a six panel episode of an encounter with Spider-Man saving JJonah Jameson from a few muggers with the end panel having an ungrateful JJJ waving his fist at Spidey as he swung away from the scene. I sent that in and a few days days after returning home from running errands I found a message from Stan Lee on my answering machine. “ Hi, Alex… this is Stan Lee. I LOVE your work and I’d love to work with you. It doesn’t pay that much but think of the GLORY!” Actually the page rate was as much as I was making at the time so i couldn’t complain. No raise in 22 years ( but from what I understand things havent changed that much for mainstream freelancers even today. ) I got my first script a few days later and in May 1977 I penciled a Sunday in the middle of a Kingpin storyline which was inked by Joe Sinnott , lettered by Stan Sakai and was published in August 1977. Sundays were always drawn 3 months ahead of publication. What a rush to see those preview Xeroxes and then the colored version in the newspaper( which I had to hunt down ! There were no papers in Florida where I lived carrying the strip but the local Barnes & Noble sold out of town newspapers so I managed to find one that published the Sundays )
FORWARD to Feb 2003: Got a call asking me if I could ink a week of Dailies drawn by Larry Lieber because inker John Tartaglione needed to go to the hospital for a procedure. John ended up being OK after that week but I had a blast inking Larry’s pencils since I really never inked anybody else other my own pencils for my Web Of Spider-Man covers. Sadly that November , I got a call that John Tartaglione has passed away at 82 because he lost the fight with his particular illness. At the same time I was asked if I would be able to take over the inking of the Dailies. Affirmative….
FORWARD to July 2018: Larry Lieber wants to retire at 87 after 25+ years ( maybe 30+? ) and I inherit the penciling duties! Pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I thought the Stan Lee would live forever especially since a few years ago when he got his pacemaker he felt he was the next Tony Stark and felt stronger than ever. Unfortunately and sadly as we all know , that didnt happen and Marvel decided the strip shouldn’t go on without STAN LEE at the helm. But I am forever in Stan Lee’s debt for having me join him, Joe Sinnott, Roy Thomas and letterers Stan Sakai, Kenny Lopez, and Janice Chiang for all these years in bringing our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to our readers each and every day for these months and years! It’s been a joy, an honor and privilege which I will never forget!
( I do want to add that since since the Sundays were done so far in advance there are TWO more Sundays that followed March 17 that we did together that are now considered to be officially UNPUBLISHED! )”
-Alex Saviuk
P.S. Putting aside how Roy got his timeline mixed up because the back int ime stuff happened in 2008 not 2002, and just so you heard it louder at the back, Stan Lee and Roy Thomas 100% didn’t care fro OMD and actively sought to keep the marriage in the comics.

Happy Birthday, Darlin’
Happy 20th, Sweetheart.
Sleepy drabble with an inexperienced 20 year old Jason Todd. ‘Nuff said, right?
Super Fluff reader insert fic.
Enjoy!
The lamp in the second story window of your home is lit. The buttery glow of the little antique seems to reach out through the dreary October morning and burrow down into his chest. Heat kindles in the tender spot, and he smiles to himself as a swell of joy rushes through him. He’s dizzy with it, tickled to feel that a flush of warmth has made his cold skin prickle all the way from his head to his toes.
You left the light on for him. It is an assent to his presence. When you want uninterrupted sleep or space, you switch your lamp off. The two of you settled on this method of indication after your roommates began lodging complaints about the odd hours Jason came knocking. Because he sticks to a relatively nocturnal schedule, early AM visitation is his most common time-frame. So early, actually, that it could still be considered extremely late from the night before.
When the lamp in your window is on, he easily scales the ramshackle siding of the 3-bedroom you share with 5 people and slides in through the unlocked framework. It’s tricky for him to do so quietly this morning. He’s eager, and the chill air is thick with the kind of moisture that doesn’t have the altitude to be rain, nor the commitment to become a proper embankment of dense Gotham fog. He slips twice, and knocks himself a good one in the shoulder against the gutter as he struggles to keep his boots in place on the slick shingles of the overhang beneath your window. He makes it though, stripping off his muddy boots and heavy jacket so as not to trail any mess and mindful not to break the delicate reading light that acts as a literal beacon of consent which allows him such liberties as creeping into your bedroom.
The swollen, fond feeling inside of him redoubles when his eyes fall on you. He is still for a moment, gaze wandering from the nip in your waist up over the soft curve of your hip. He always takes a few seconds to admire you as you sleep. To have the intimate space of your bedroom offered to him, to be so trusted as to be welcomed into such a space while you are unconscious...
Every time, he relishes the opportunity to enjoy the faith and consideration that you extend to him by allowing these ludicrous early visits.
You always sleep half-curled on your side. Even swathed in a full comforter and an additional plush throw blanket, he can still make out parts of your figure which he admires. As he approaches your bedside, he reaches back into the pocket of his jeans, retrieving the present he’s carried with him all night through patrol.
You stir before he moves to wake you, and so he forgoes gently climbing into bed. He drops his weight behind you, pulling you back against him. The blankets unravel as he weasels his free hand beneath them to rub up and down your side. He nuzzles his face into your hair and hums a low, wordless greeting while you draw in a few loud, lazy lungfuls of air.
“Mmph,” you groan, tongue clumsy from sleep. It is a whiny, inarticulate sound, and it takes you a while to gather enough of your mind to form words. “Your hands are cold,” you say, flipping some of the blankets back over him. “So is your nose.”
You thread your fingers through his, dragging his hand up over your chest and tucking it beneath your chin. Doing so effectively tightens his arm around your middle, and you snuggle back toward him with a sweet, drowsy lack of inhibition. Every part of him is cold, you realize. Sort of damp too, at least his hair and his cargo pants. You nestle down against the hand at your throat, worried that he might get sick but too tired to verbally fuss.
Jason procrastinates until you doze off again, soaking in your easy warmth and affection while his other hand reflexively tightens in a pattern over your gift. He’s got it under your pillow now, having unthinkingly helped pose the both of you into your common shared sleeping arrangement. Nervous energy keeps him from resting as the doubts he’s had all week about his gift selection begin to plague his mind with a keener ferocity, now that the time to actually give it to you is here.
“Babe,” he whispers just above your ear. “Baby?” He gives you a firm squeeze before beginning to jostle you back and forth between his arm and torso. “Wake up, okay? I’ve got something for you.”
You take another one of your deep breaths, face scrunching into a malcontent contortion. “M’wake,” you mumble, clearly not.
He gives an airy chuckle, pressing a firm kiss to your temple before hauling the both of you upright. You hiss, fighting to remain within the toasty, comforting blankets. When you’re good and vertical with at least one eye peeped open, Jason maneuvers so as to be directly in front of you.
“Hey,” he grins, feeling suddenly foolish and a bit shy. You don’t look particularly happy, and he wonders if he should have allowed you to sleep. It’s your day, after all.
You respond simply, clearly somewhat confused. “Hey?”
Your voice is tender and soft, having worked through the gravelly portion of misuse and developed into a delicate, almost musical murmur. The sound gives him pause, and he goes back in to press another kiss to your hot, flushed cheek. He stays close for a moment, embracing you with only his nearness and not with his arms. When he leans back down on his haunches, he extends the bundle in his hand.
“I wanted to be the first to tell you and, ya’ know, the first one to give you a present.” You’re really smiling now, both beautiful eyes wide and sparkling in the warm lambency from the little lamp in the corner. “It’s like... four o’clock in the morning, so I’m pretty sure I get to be the first one who says it.” He grips your chin with the fingertips of one hand, tilting your face up and planting a proper kiss over your lips, heedless of morning breath. “Happy Birthday, Darlin’.”
He says this while your noses are still touching, eye to eye and smiling like the devil on a stormy Sunday morning. You go sheepish looking at him when he makes faces like that, with his eyes so bright and his teeth flashing all white and sharp in just the right places. Demurring, all too aware of the stale heat emanating from your tongue and suddenly quite nervous about something like morning breath, you drop your head and set the crest of your cheek gently against his jaw before moving back.
“Thank you, baby,” you mumble, leaning back against your headboard and plucking at the plain, hearty paper and butcher’s twine he used to wrap your present. “You’re definitely the first one to wish me a happy birthday on my actual birthday, for sure.”
It is a book, as you thought it’d be. This one is a well-worn paperback that looks to be of a scholastic persuasion. It’s cover is creased and torn, baring a wild artistic image that you recognize as an engraving of William Blake. Your head cocks to the side as you gently look the battered work over for a title. It’s on the spine, and you shoot Jason a curious look when you can’t quite make out what it says because of the deterioration and damage done by copious readings.
“Blake?” you question, wondering what in the world you were supposed to do with this gift.
Jason beams, practically puffing his chest he’s so proud that you recognized the artwork on the cover. “Yeah!”
“Uh, I don’t know much about Blake,” you confess, turning the book back and forth in your palms. “I mostly know his art and, well, the tiger poem.”
“Yeah..." he says, enthusiasm completely wilted. His sentences become halting as the room fills with the combined discomfort and awkward confusion of both you and your boyfriend. “I uh, I was kinda’ hoping you didn’t know much about him. He’s one of my favorites. Of the romantics, anyway. Really more like a proto-romantic. And he's not like my favorite, favorite author. Just a good one. Sorta’. He’s weird.”
Silence grows as you try to process your reaction to the gift. It is very early, mostly the middle of the night, after all. You’re not entirely sure what you think of it. You are grateful though, grateful that he thought of you and that he was so excited to wish you a happy birthday.
You catch his eye, and hug the book to your chest with a small smile. “Thank you,” you say, leaning forward a bit and deepening your expression so as to properly communicate your gratitude.
He nods, still obviously disappointed and perturbed. Just as you are about to reach forward to offer him a comforting touch, he extends his hand and gestures for the book. With only a bit of hesitation, you relinquish it back to him.
“This uh, this was the first book that Alfred bought for me after I moved into the manner.”
“Oh!” you say, his context suddenly tripling your interest in the paperback.
Jason rarely spoke about his past. You knew a rough outline of everything that had gone on, but certainly no details.
He doesn’t look up at you, cracking the book open and petting some of the pages with the gentlest brush of his fingertips. “Yeah. Alfred and sometimes, well actually, pretty often Bruce too... they’d read me poems from this book. I made them read it over and over again. Always a poem from The Songs of Innocence and then they’d flip all the way back to the back and find the corresponding work to the first poem in The Songs of Experience. I hated it when they didn’t read one right after the other, even though the collections were published separately. I felt like they were skipping a chapter or something if the poems weren’t read together.”
You don’t know if it’s the somewhat stunned expression on your face or the silence that presses him to explain, but you are enchanted as he continues on.
“Like ‘The Tyger’ for example, it has a companion poem called ‘The Lamb.' They were written to contextualize one another and question... well God, basically. Intelligent design. ‘The Lamb’ focuses on purity, childhood innocence, and guileless trust in the watchful design of God. ‘The Tyger’ though, the one from The Songs of Experience, it details the hitches and complications in believing that the same God from ‘The Lamb’ would create such good, delicate, innocent creatures and then force them to live in the same world as monsters and fear and man-eaters.”
“Wow.” You give the book another sly glance as it rests in his hands, feeling that you perhaps underestimated the contents and, certainly, that you underestimated the emotional connection Jason has to it.
He chuckles again, humorlessly this time, still not looking at you. “Yeah. I stole it out of Bruce’s penthouse over a year ago. He um- he had a bunch of stuff from when I was a kid moved there after... what happened.”
You didn’t think it was possible, but your eyes find a way to go even wider. Jason never, never talks to you about that.
Never.
You learned about it from Tim. And the newspaper, of course.
Jason wants to shove the book down his throat. This is the first birthday in your relationship, and he ruined it with a dumb gift because he’s a dumb idiot. When he saw your face, looking down at the stupid freaking poetry book with zero surprise or delight, it’s like he started word vomiting. He can’t get it to quit, and he can’t look at you while this comes out of his mouth.
“I thought he moved it there to, I dunno’, forget about me? Keep me off of his mind. Dick told me though,” Jason pauses to take a deep breath, obviously getting overwhelmed. “He told me a while after I broke in and saw so much of my stuff in there that Bruce had uh- he’d gotten real mean after. That he couldn’t be around anyone. Not even Alfred. He moved out of the manor with my things, and he kept them at the penthouse to visit them or something, I guess? It was a weird explanation. This is all weird. I’m so sorry. I should have gotten you a newer copy or maybe just-”
“No!” You lurch forward, snatching the book out of his hand and wrapping your arms around him. “No,” you say more calmly, touched beyond belief that he would give you what amounted to a piece of himself as a gift.
“I love it. It’s perfect, and I love it.”
He puts his weight behind the hug, folding around you and squeezing so firmly that your breath is short. “I love you,” he grumbles into your hair, still unhappy with himself for derailing this gesture so thoroughly.
“I love you too,” you say, tapping at his elbow as a request for him to lighten his hold. He does, and you lean back with an infectious, dazzling smile. You hold the book up, eager and no longer self-conscious or sleepy. “Will you read me some of the poems?”
“Uh,” his face goes bright red, the blush running all the way to the tips of his ears. “I don’t really know how well I can read aloud, babe. But, I mean, it’s your birthday. If you want to pick a few, I’ll give it a try.”
With a giddy nod, you flip open the book to find an inscription in red ink on the title page:
Happy 20th Birthday, my Sunny Girl!
This book is full of one man’s ideas about life, beauty, and the things that he thought were worth protecting.
None of them are half as beautiful or worthy as you.
Love, J.

Did a lot in 2018. So much, that it has to be put behind a cut.
-Got a new job that was a ‘trial by fire’ in every sense of the phrase. Did pretty good on my projects and got some good experience in my belt. This was probably the biggest one.
-Moved across the country by myself into a totally new city. Settled in and did a lot of exploring. Hosted a lot of guests and went roadtripping solo a lot. Apartment hunted... TWICE. Kept myself moving.
-Led two zines with my best friend, Tododeku Worlds and Vibrance: BNHA Femslash, working both as a creator and a mod. Learned a lot of small business skills as well as pushed the limits of my artistic technique. Proved to myself that project management is something I enjoy and also am competent at. Both projects did really well and I’m very proud of them. @u@
-Participated in four zines in total, a mix of fic and art. I feel like it’s a good mix- I’m happy to be doing both writing and art instead of only one or the other. The experiences were all very different and it was an interesting micro-niche-business ‘thing’ to learn from.
-Started way too many fics and didn’t finish them! But it’s okay because I wrote two zine fics and just finished love languages in time haha. Tododeku really became a primary inspiration for me this last year and I still have a couple more stories I want to tell with them, hopefully for 2019. If anything, this year of writing taught me how to finish stuff and that I can, in fact, maintain a mentally rigorous hobby even while doing a full time job. @u@;;
-Started taekwando! I’ve wanted to get back into a martial art since I was in middle school, so now that I also don’t have a good place for volleyball, this is my current sport. Just got my third stripe a little while ago!
-Mellowed out A LOT. My sleep schedule is ‘more regular’ now that I have work every morning, I’m eating pretty reasonably because I’m cooking mostly for myself and there’s no midnight delivery pizza, and also stable income... I’m still not totally on a routine that’s ‘the best’, but I’m getting there.
-Started reading more books again! Big one for me, because I haven’t done any substantial reading that wasn’t academia for ages. Been trying to find my happy place between YA, historical fiction, and nonfiction - so far, sometimes it can be a real hit ‘n miss, but other times I’ve been riveted. (so basically like how it used to be.) I think this is a big one to ‘becoming a better writer’ too.
-Visited SF once and NY twice on vacation and a couple other places on business trips. I did a lot of domestic travel this year, mostly to see friends, which was nice! Even though I thought I had grown up a little, I still went too hard each time though...
-Made a lot of sweet friends both online and offline! Some of this is last year spillover, but this year I was lucky enough to continue meeting cool people and have some quality conversations! Special shoutout to the turtleducks and Nat!
-AND THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE: WENT TO DISNEYLAND WITH MY FAVORITE CINNAMON ROLL FOR THIRTEEN HOURS STRAIGHT AND HAD A FUCKING BLAST.
Goals for 2019:
-Develop my career. ‘Nuff said. I have places I want to climb to.
-Successful Apartment Roommate Life, Unlock! Gotta get used to living with someone again, but it should be better for my mental health.
-Pick up another class/hobby. I need less solitary pursuits. Preferably something mentally stimulating, but I’ve also been checking my savings and the cost for hang gliding lessons again...
-International Travel! I’d like to go to at least one foreign country next year. And I need to stop going back to New York all the time because I’m pining for everyone there.
-MAKE IRL FRIENDS. THIS IS A BIG ONE. MEET. PEOPLE. DAMNIT. GET INVOLVED WITH THE LGBT COMMUNITY ALREADY. YOU HAVE SO MANY INTERESTS, PICK ONE, AND GO MAKE FRIENDS.
-Continue to draw and write. At the very least, I really want to finish lesbian Tododeku roommates AU, but I’ve also been craving Sengoku AU for a long time now. I’d like to work on diversifying the ‘types’ of stories I’m telling. This year was very wistful and so I wrote a lot of romance (which is good! I got more comfortable writing romance.) I wanna keep trying something new (while still being a huge sap because come on, you know me)!
-On the subject of creative work, original work! I think this will go hand in hand with making more friends and diversifying my portfolio. I’ll see how this balances with “pursue career interests”. Fandom is very healing if I’m going to be doing technical work very intensely.
-Sleep more. Always. But regularly. Try to wake up early.
-Keep up all the good progress from this year! @u@
-Stay. Retired. From. Zines.

Jasper pt 1
Finally a continuation of 2020. Decided to break this up because it was getting too long. Previous Masterlist
Étienne hadn’t even got the chance to pack his bags. When he had managed to get to the guest room the bed had been neatly made and a note in Edward’s most beautiful floral handwriting read ‘If you leave in the middle of the night I’ll personally kill you’.
This was after about fifty cigarettes and a long conversation with an unexpected source. Honestly he had lost count of how many, he just knew that the moment one wasn’t between his lips he had simply grabbed another in one long thoughtless action as if trying to consume some cure that simply wasn’t there. So when he had finally gotten up the guts to enter the guest room, indecision weighing heavy of whether he should follow the advice or run, the words of the conversation curling in opposite paths in his mind, the fresh air once twined into his hair fading, he simply stared at the note, the words skimming off his eyes like a rock on calm waters, until finally sinking in, rippling out, each letter plunking into place heavy into the wet darkness.
He had stumbled out of Calvin’s office feeling suffocated by a clogged throat and not wanting to deal with anything. Attempting to save face he had gone straight to the kitchen not wanting to look like a wounded animal fleeing to its hidey hole and grabbed a glass of water. Hanging over the edge of the sink gulping the water down desperately, trying to stop the emotions leaking out of him and the water splashing down the front of his romper uncomfortably wet against his too hot skin and when finally, when he no longer could drink anymore his belly so full of water he thought he would puke he had turned the tap off, furiously wiping at his betraying eyes which despite all the best efforts in the world had been revealing words he never wanted said, gulping in breaths in an attempt to quell the racing of his heart that he suddenly realized that he was not alone, that the entire time he had not been alone in the kitchen.
A prickling sensation on the back of his neck alerted him, as he slowly turned and realized that Mac was sitting at the table, looking rather awkward. Étienne suspected that Mac had heard Something of what had just occurred – enough that he felt his insides try to crawl up into his rib cage in absolute mortification. Not only was it bad enough Edward had yelled at him, it was bad that others knew about it. God, he was going to have to leave the country, get a new name and assume a new identity, came his panicked thought. The internal screaming increased as Mac abruptly stood up, and dug around in his pocket, producing a pack of cigarettes. He gave it a shake, and slid one out, finally looking directly at Étienne, offering it out silently asking if he needed a smoke. Deciding that he could run away after he fulfilled his need for nicotine, Étienne stepped forward, taking the cigarette.
“Can’t smoke in the house,” Mac abruptly said, and then he turned, heading to the back door. Scrambling to put his shoes on, Étienne followed him outside, where Caroline was busy with Calvin putting sealant onto the tent. “Going for a walk,” Mac announced, to which Caroline simply nodded. Patches, apparently knowing what the word ‘walk’ meant, had bounded over to them tongue out, eager to join them.
Even with the cigarette between his lips Étienne was tense, not sure what Mac would say, or if he would even mention anything. As they walked passing through the squeaky gate, footfalls light upon the hot sidewalk, the breeze bringing distant noises such as laughter and shouting, working to emphasize the silence heavy between the two men. Étienne wasn’t sure what Mac wanted, not sure how to interpret the calm expression, relaxed shoulders, silent expectation that a confidence might be made. How much did he trust this man even? What was he supposed to say? Hell he barely knew him, only knew enough to know he liked him – a lot. Mac gave that feeling that once he counted you as a friend he would be the guy appearing to pull you out of your burning house – and hell he’d run in and save the goddam dog too. A solid trustworthy person who knew what it meant to be the object of other people’s virulent opinions.   Étienne, lost in his indecision, nearly hurt himself when the cigarette burnt down to its stub. His soft swear caused Mac to finally look at him, and something in his concerned expression finally gave Étienne enough gumption to ask.
“So… what did you hear?”
Mac offered Étienne another cigarette, and then lit another for himself and taking a long drag, his eyes focused upon Patches as he slowly said, “’Nuff to knows stuff I shouldn’t.” He had taken them into a park, the path winding amongst trees, quiet in the heart of the city.
At the small choking sound Étienne made, Mac added hastily, “Ah shoot, if you wants I can pretend I heard nothing, my mind is empty, nothing is known.” He made a rather comedic gesture as if he had grabbed the information from his mind and tossed it into a garbage can.
“You – you would forget?” Étienne asked in surprise and gratitude. He had thought that he had blown everything up, instead here was Mac working to preserve their friendship. Hell he had barely known this man for three days, and he felt a rush of fierce loyalty to him.
There was something about how he calmly shrugged saying, “Hell, it’s not my place to figures out your relationships… well, I suppose if you plan on fuckins around with Chuck I will have to have a place. Geezus Etsy, he’s like a brother to me. You needs to spend some time to think carefully about your actions.”
“Thinking- all I have been doing is thinking! He is in a perfectly fine relationship with Calvin- what even is there to think about?” Étienne snapped in irritation, he bent down trying to hide his tears, trembling fingers curling around smooth wood and threw the stick trying to express his frustration as if he was  attempting to throw away all of his problems. Patches misinterpreted this as a game of catch, and with a great woof ran to fetch the stick. “I refuse to just blow up that relationship because of my feelings, as much as I hate to say it, Calvin is a good guy and he’s made Edward really happy – I – what the hell am I supposed to do here? Why is everyone acting as if I’m supposed to be doing something? Isn’t letting Edward be in a happy relationship with some other man good? Isn’t that the fucking honorable thing to do here?”
“I s’pose…” Mac hesitated as if trying to find words, “Reassuring you respect Brisy, hell he may be an idealistic idiot but he treats Ed well…” Mac suddenly stopped walking, the movement so abrupt Étienne bumped into him. Rubbing his arm, Étienne looked up as he heard Mac’s voice take on a more serious tone, “Etsy ya can’t just ups and runs. It doesn’t work trust me, I know. You and Edward at the base of everything are friends, you owe him at least a chance to talk when he’s less angry.”
“He can talk later, when we are kilometers apart,” Étienne sulked, scowling when Patches ran up to him stick in mouth expecting him to throw it again. Just like his problems, forever washing up on the rocky shores of his life, never truly gone. Taking the stick, he threw it with more vigour.
“Hell, y’knows Skype aint shit, Etsy. You gonna makes him spend $300 to fly on over to your sorry ass so you can goes into further hiding? Chuck’s able to find people who don’t wants to be found.”
“I’m not his responsibility anymore,” Étienne muttered, “Plus he doesn’t care enough to do that anymore.”
“Or maybe he thought you gots your shit together there, Etsy.” Mac sighed, pausing as if trying to decide whether he should add anything more, until finally he said, “Chuck’s been there for me during my worst moments, dragging me out of my own stupidity too many times to count and nursing me back to some form of humanity. You should’ve already figured out he doesn’t hates ya because he specifically said you’re still camping. If he wanted to cut you out he would have done so.”
Patches had once more appeared, and Étienne took the stick, buying time as he waved the stick around, the dog’s head excitedly swivelling around to follow it, waiting for him to throw it. Tail wagging a thousand wags a second, Étienne finally tossed the stick, and Patches shot after it.
“I guess,” he finally admitted, Mac’s words sinking in, he could feel the damn tears prickling at his eyes, “But-”
Putting a reassuring hand upon his shoulder Mac interrupted, “Etsy, we all fuck up. Runnin’ may seems like the easier path but it sure as hell is tirin’.” He offered Étienne another cigarette, and grateful not having to actually say any words, he took it.
The rest of their walk was in silence, as Étienne pondered what the hell Mac had done for Edward to ‘bring him back to humanity’, knowing that if he asked he would probably be blanked.
So as he entered the guest bedroom, his mouth the taste of cigarettes, his eyes fell onto the note. Was Mac right? Indecision held him, long enough that he found himself curled up on the bed, pillows propping him up, not wanting to interact with anyone, and pulling out his sketchbook to draw. Aimless drawings, the shapes shifting into things that could perhaps be something recognizable, the lines hard and sharp, moving into soft, before quickly having his hand smear across the ink obscuring whatever they might have meant. He hardly noticed the door opening, until it shut, causing him to drop the pen and look up at the intruder. Somewhere in between the knots, he knew he could have fled, it was probably wiser to have fled, but he felt trapped as he watched Edward somewhat uncertainly approach, tentatively perching on the edge of the bed, an intruder in his own house. The shadows falling through the curtains, long sentries between them across the bed spread.
“Hey…” a soft introduction, body language stiff, “I was worried that…”
“I’d run away on pain of death? I got your note Edward.” Perhaps his tone was a little too sharp, too rough, as he pulled his legs in close to his chest, the sketchbook tilting up against it.
“Right… actually… I had come in to get rid of that note, I realized after it was rather… childish…” a sigh, fingers plucking at the bed cover, looking anywhere but him, as the shadow fell across his face, making his expression hard to read as he quietly muttered in a defeated tone, “I know as much as I want you to stay I can’t force you to.”
Étienne was not sure what to say. What words could even portray his feelings, how awkward he currently felt? The idea of going camping tomorrow felt like a burden, some sort of no-man’s-land where all he wanted to do was bury his head in the dirt and become chicken food. The defeated tone tore at him, the raw underpinnings where Edward apparently could see no hope between them, and it made Étienne just want to reach out and do something, what he didn’t know, but something to say that it wasn’t all lost – whatever it was.
Instead he stared at his sketchbook, which he was forcibly reminded that Edward had bought him, along with the nice pens which he had been using. Suddenly he was overwhelmed with how generous Edward had been the entire time he had been here. Food, time, even volunteering to make him his own romper, Étienne felt his eyes prickle, the generosity snagging him unexpectedly, because it was all so selfless, where Edward did it without expecting anything back – other than friendship. He glanced over his sketchbook to Edward, who had turned his head and was staring at him intently his eyes still in shadow, and as their eyes met he felt his insides twist.
<Earlier today–> the words were coming out, words he did not mean to say, but apparently today was going to be one of those days where everything that should remain buried rose up like the undead, <did you mean it? When you said you loved me? I know it’s only friendship love but… it meant a lot to me. After… everything.>
<Yes.> Edward shifted his voice suddenly intense as he leant closer, <I meant every damn word.>
Edward was uncomfortably close, his arms on either side of Étienne effectively trapping him against the headboard, bodies close but not yet touching. Close enough so that Étienne could feel the body heat, close enough that if he shifted slightly he could touch him, close enough that he was sure Edward could hear his heart thudding wildly inside his chest, close enough that his eyes dropped down to Edward’s lips, as he nervously licked his own suddenly dry ones.
<You need to understand, Bouclés, I never stopped loving you, even after forcibly breaking our mess apart. I just couldn’t continue on as we were – whatever it was.> Edward reached up with his left hand, gently brushing it against Étienne’s cheek, and for a moment Étienne was sure Edward was thinking about kissing him. Instead, there was a sigh, and Edward pulled away, shifting so his leg hung off the bed, and casually he switched to English, “We need to get your bag packed for tomorrow, and I am assuming you didn’t bring any sweats, seeing as you have effectively stolen that pair of Calvin’s pants.”
Not waiting for a reply, Edward slipped off the bed and walked over to Étienne’s luggage, “It would be silly for you to bring your suitcase, I’m pretty sure we can just lend you a bag.” A pause, and then, he looked over his shoulder to Étienne, “It’ll be upstairs though. I can run up and grab it, and I guess grab a hoody or something?”
<Then what are we?> Edward’s words had been mere babble to Étienne as he had tried to mentally gather himself, <What are you trying to tell me Edward?>
“Other than you probably need a hoody because it gets chilly in the mountains? Hmmm, what are we? Friends who love each other? What else?” he shrugged, “Other than that, hell if I know. Isn’t friends good enough?” he gave a bitter laugh, “Isn’t that more convenient for you anyway?”
Somehow the manner in which Edward had said that rubbed Étienne the wrong way, as if he was implying something else entirely. Setting his sketchbook down, he asked, <What do you mean by that, Edward? Convenient?>
Edward was standing at the door, hand on the door jamb, as he said simply, “You don’t do relationships, do you? Simply friends mean you don’t need to worry about relationship stresses, which you don’t like.”
He wanted to respond, but Edward had already left the room. Spurred on by wanting to prove Edward wrong somehow, he sprang off the bed and followed him up the stairs, wanting to protest this damning assessment.
<Why are you always making assumptions about what I want?> he asked heatedly closely following Edward up the stairs, <You never let me speak or reply, you make all these damning assumptions->
<You? Talk? About feelings?> Edward sarcastically gasped as he clutched his chest in mid shock as he dramatically stopped upon the stairs, leaning against the railing, <What ghost has possessed you?>
<Listen here, you smartass-> Étienne hissed as he took one more step to growl right in Edward’s face <I’m doing my fucking best here and you pulling this bullshit is not making it any easier->
Edward rolled his eyes, <Yeah yeah, however I’m still fucking mad at you, so you will have to put up with my overdramatic sarcasm--->
<Do I really have to? As you said you can’t force me to stay here, I can just walk out of here and go the fuck back home->
<And do what, Bouclés?> Edward asked his tone suddenly serious, taking on a slight mock, <Get drunk? High? Ignore things as usual?>
Slamming his hand against the wall right next to Edward’s head Étienne burst out <Goddammit Edward, why are you being such an asshole?>
Slithering out of Étienne’s trap, Edward simply mocked as he quickly skipped up the rest of the stairs <Ohh hit a nerve, did I? Watcha gonna do? Bagel me to death?>
<You little asshole,> Étienne growled as he followed him up the stairs, watching in frustrated amusement as Edward simply pirouetted into the bedroom. <The bagel is in fact an effective weapon of murder!>
Opening the closet door and turning on the light, Edward simply replied “Uhnhuh.”
<It can be used to choke someone with – or if they’re frozen cause a head injury!> Étienne heatedly defended it.
Edward simply was going through the racks, “Hey whattabout this one?” he pulled out a dark red hoody, his eyes widening in shock, as he then quickly tried to stuff it back onto the rack again.
<Hey wait a moment!> Étienne grabbed it out of Edward’s hand and stared at it <This is actually MY hoody – I thought I lost it! See! There is even a little Habs logo right there!>
Flushing slightly, Edward muttered <You left it here, Calvin’s been wearing it.>
<Oh? Is this why it’s amongst your stuff? Right beside this Oilers hoody?>
<S-shutup. We got your hoody sorted. I figure you have the rest of the stuff which should be good for camping,> Edward had positioned himself awkwardly in front of his rack which stirred up Étienne’s suspicions.
In his sweetest tone of voice, Étienne asked, <Edward, what’s behind you?>
<We’re done here, you can exit the closet now->
<But maybe I need a shirt?> as he said this, Étienne leant forward and calmly tried to reach behind Edward who effectively blocked him.
“No you don’t, you have plenty of shirts, I’ll do the laundry right now- Et-!” he shifted working to stop Étienne from looking at the clothing behind him.
“Let me see!” Étienne cajoled, “What you are hiding-”
“Lordee are y’all making out in the closet?” Calvin’s voice cut in causing the two men to guiltily start and then put space between them as they looked over at the amused face of Calvin.
“N-no of course not!” Edward blurted out in a guilty tone which seemed to imply that was exactly what they were doing.
“Wouldn’t the bed be more comfortable?” Calvin innocently asked as he leant against the door frame. “I mean the closet is nice and all but isn’t that a little old?”
“Calvin I was just trying to find him some good camping clothes, look, he got a hoody.”
“That’s MY hoody!” Calvin complained as he noticed what Étienne was holding.
“Excuse me? This is clearly MY hoody!” Étienne defended as he pointed at the faded Habs logo.
“Was. I found it upstairs and appropriated it for myself because it’s warm and snuggly. Figure its fair trade since you pretty much stole my favourite sweatpants.”
“Stole? I am simply borrowing.”
“Uh huh,” came the disbelieving reply. “Glad you’re still coming camping with us at least, Etsy. Guess I didn’t have to make those phone calls…”
Étienne frowned, “Phone calls?”
In response Calvin blankly smiled, “By the way, are you alright with sharing a bed with us? I could only find the large inflatable mattress and such. The small one is broken beyond repair.”
“What do you mean by phone calls?” Étienne demanded. “To whom?”
“Jeezus you’re so concerned about phone calls I drop some bomb about having to share a bed with me and Ed and you’re not even concerned.”
Étienne shrugged indifferently, “What’s really going to happen other than being ‘warm and snuggly’?”
“Are you sure it can’t be fixed?” Edward interrupted as he edged closer to Calvin. This turned out to be a mistake as Étienne quickly pounced upon the revealed clothes, and with a triumphant sound pulled a bright blue tank top off the rack. Across it was scrawled ‘Crystal Queer’ with the images of crystals around it.
“You had this all along! My favourite tank top!” he shook it accusingly at Edward.
“It’s not my fault you left your shit here all the time!” Edward heatedly returned.
“I was subtly trying to move in-” Étienne protested, “I was spending a lot of time here in the early 2000’s, I thought we were getting serious enough to-” he stopped blushing in embarrassment as he realized what he just said. Focusing on the shirt, his brushed some invisible lint off of it.
“Early 2000’s, hey?” Calvin slowly interjected, his voice curious, “When I wasn’t talking to you, Ed?”
Edward was busy staring at Étienne with narrowed eyes as if he would really enjoy slowly murdering him, but instead replied, “Yeah. You ignoring me was pretty hard because even if you are an idiot, you are one of my best friends.”
“Awww Ed, I was only mad because I had the biggest crush on you forever but assumed it would never happen, had to deal with some shit.” Calvin brightly responded, “Anyways, Étienne what do you mean something serious?”
Étienne shifted under the pretence of making sure the shirt was hung correctly, he hid his face from them absolutely dying. “Nothing, it’s irrelevant now.”
“If it’s irrelevant that means you can talk about it, hey?” Calvin said in a rather smug sounding voice. “What have you got to lose?”
Taking in a heavy breath and wanting to simply punch Calvin in the head, Étienne glared at him, “What the hell is your problem?”
“Hmmmm, where do I start?” he paused as if contemplating the question, before turning to Edward, “So is your bag ready to go? Mine’s all packed up.”
“Mostly, just finishing with Étienne here, I was thinking he could simply use one of our duffel bags? Seemed silly to use his suitcase.”
“Maybe it’s better to use his suitcase, or at least hold it hostage,” Calvin said in a teasing tone, “Y’know in case he gets cold feet and can’t decide how he likes his eggs.”
“What about eggs?” Étienne frowned in confusion.
Edward gave a long-suffering sigh, “Calvin, he’s not gonna Julia Roberts himself out of this situation-”
“I’m in a situation?” Étienne asked his voice taking on a slightly hysterical note.
“I don’t know Edward, he usually runs away when things get too intense.”
“Please give him more credit,” Edward snapped, “Just because he isn’t some open book like you pride yourself to be doesn’t mean he always runs--- just usually.”
“Run from what? What are you-wait what do you mean by usually?”
Finally Edward looked at him, acknowledging his very existence, “Y’know. Remember that time we were at a cities conference back in... ugh what year, ninety-five? And you were complaining about how tired you were from walking everywhere, and how you just wanted to get back to the hotel room and pass out?”
“You don’t need to continue anymore, I remember it perfectly well,” Étienne cut in dreading the story Edward was bringing up.
“Please continue, I wanna hear this,” Calvin interjected.
Looking between them, a devious look came upon Edward’s face as he continued, much to Étienne’s annoyance, “Anyways how the streets are set up there is only one entrance into the hotel, and Lucas was just chilling there smoking, and Étienne sees him and instead of walking past him like a normal person, he spots this from a block away, turns around and informs me we suddenly need to go eat food. I didn’t get it, until he did it a second time after we had food, where we get close to the hotel and suddenly Étienne needs to go somewhere else, this time claiming he really wanted to buy a book. The third time I was like holy shit I want to just take a nap, and that’s when I realized Étienne simply did not want to walk past Lucas in case a conversation might start up.”
“I just wanted to eat and buy a book! I don’t know what bullshit you’re coming up with!” Étienne protested heatedly.
“So when I was all determined to actually get back to the hotel, I just forged ahead, with Étienne sulking,”
“I was not sulking-“
“Sulking, and then of course y’know Lucas says hello because he has Manners”
“I have manners!”
“I never said you didn’t, but I suppose guilty conscience-?”
“Hey!”
“-and Étienne is just sulking behind me, and gives Lucas a stiff nod in response. Of course I wanted to stay and chat but with old grumpy-butt there, I was all torn between cordiality and making sure he wasn’t going to sulk all night because I made him hang out too much in the presence of his former enemy-”
“Former? Please, it’s still ongoing.”
“Only on your side, Bouclés,” Edward sweetly said. “So yeah, sometimes, usually, you run.”
“I was merely avoiding an unpleasant situation,” Étienne sniffed, “Anyways, can I grab this bag you keep promising so I can get all packed for camping tomorrow?” He didn’t even wait as he pushed past Calvin, walking out a few feet and then expectantly looking at them.
“Only if you promise not to run,” Calvin teased.
In response Étienne rolled his eyes and sarcastically said, “Yeah I promise, dear.”  Which simply earned him a laugh from Calvin, and a snort from Edward, and for a brief moment Étienne felt optimistic.

(I copied and pasted this from a comment at X) 1. FMA 2003 gave its male leads (Ed and Roy) emotional vulnerability. Since Brotherhood worked the positive angle, the misery moments guys like Ed and Roy went through were infrequent and toned down. (i.e. they didn’t complain a lot about their circumstances.) The positive angle’s great, but what FMA1 did was give a human voice to very human characters. Ed and Roy and other characters take time to grieve over what’s happening to them. “Move forward” they indeed still say, but they also have a human balance of getting caught up in their own pain. Sometimes it’s hard to move forward even when you want to.
2. FMA 2003 dares to ask whether equivalent exchange is the way of the world. In Brotherhood/manga, it’s pretty clear that it is. What happens here is that because of all the horrible things that sometimes happen to the characters, fate looks cruel in both versions. But in the end, FMA:B’s/manga’s characters earn back for what they put in. Roy getting his eyesight back? Roy loses an eye and gets demoted at the end of the 03. Once again, talk all you want about the positive angle, but this is the real angle. Yes, maybe fate was at the other extreme and was overly cruel. But FMA1 tries to depict a world in which things aren’t fair. And with extraordinary circumstances comes extraordinary unfairness.
3. FMA 2003 created Homunculi in a way that ties them to alchemists. FMA1 hit harder on various themes, including horrible things alchemy is capable of, and the fact that no matter what everyone’s intentions are, if destruction follows, it’s still an evil deed. The Homunculi were created with the best of intentions and they still caused such evil. It’s easy to blame them, or only blame Dante, but Homunculi were used in the 03 to illustrate that everyone was to blame for the terrible things that were happening. FMA:B had its reasons for having the villain it did (I’ll rant on that later), but FMA1 didn’t blame something supernatural for what humans are capable of doing themselves: genocide and widespread destruction and bloodshed.
4. Religion is adequately blamed while alchemy is also viewed as a religion. I don’t know…FMA:B viewed alchemy positively in general, like a gift. That’s why we have Ling’s quote about how Ed looks like he’s praying when he transmutes. It’s like alchemy’s another gift from God, and alchemy and religion aren’t that far apart. What FMA:B does is highlight how alchemy can be used for good more than the terrible things it can do; FMA 2003 takes the other road and emphasizes that religion—or alchemy, as that’s the subject of the series—can be used for great evil.
5. It took just a few volumes of FMA’s manga and created an entire story from what little material and themes it had to explore. FMA1 delved deep into equivalent exchange, religion, the emotional wreck you could become if you experienced what any one of these characters did, the Homunculi having human traits—a theme FMA:B later explored—while emphasizing their desire to become human because they weren’t that far off anyway, etc. This anime has been called a fanfic in a negative connotation, but I think it’s a fanfic in a positive connotation. How hard is it to write something based on only a little information? The 03 was never trying to guess where Arakawa would go; it was trying to go somewhere else. And it did.
6. It takes characters that end up playing minor roles in FMA:B/manga and expounds on them. Sheska, Rose—hell, even Hughes lasted longer. All three of these characters have pretty large roles in the plot, giving them some of what the manga did not. It’s like those fanfics that want to explore minor characters BECAUSE they were never big. This is the same thing.
7. It takes the FMA universe and essentially makes it godless. That’s what I got from it, anyway. It’s not called “Truth” in FMA 03. It’s called “The Gate”, this thing that’s so indifferent and unfair that it doesn’t even bother to communicate with humans. It just takes and humans keep giving to the void. That might not be the FMA manga fans know, but it IS a pretty relevant theme for the how many millions of miserable people out there?
8. It more directly parallels the relationship of Ed and Al with Scar and his brother. Of course, FMA:B did this too, so no shots taken. However, the parallel Scar himself drew ended up being his motivation. Granted that his motivation killed a lot of people—motivation doesn’t automatically equal GOOD THING. Just means that Scar emotionally connected to the bond the Elric brothers shared, and that was the only thing in the world that gave him hope and happiness.
9. It uses the Philosopher’s Stone as a way of illustrating mankind’s selfishness. I’m still working on what FMA:B used it for, but I’m sure there are plenty of people who analyze that. I do know the Stone is partly thematic material though. And the Stone bypasses equivalent exchange; Ed and Al’s continued pursuit of it, even after they know how it’s made, displays the selfish tendencies of human beings. And until Ed realized that using that Stone only resulted in evil, he WAS giving to the void. Ed and Al thought their pursuit of the Stone was enough work for equivalent exchange to be fair and get their bodies back. But the Stone itself is a symbol of getting without giving, taking without earning, and hurting other people for personal gain. Until Ed offered himself instead, he had no reward in his pursuit.
10. Another point on the Stone: Ed is more morally ambiguous about it in this version. He’s as tempted by its promise as he is horrified by its origins. Even Al is drawn to it eventually. People—even people who try to live up to being noble, upright people, like Ed—aren’t inherently unselfish, and FMA1 forces them to weigh their human nature against what is right.
11. The music. Okay, this is getting almost too close to the art argument…while I can’t talk about music like an expert, I can talk about how it affected my experience personally. FMA:B’s music is powerful and plot/action-driven. It has emotional pieces, and overall its music fits the anime it was made for. So does FMA1’s music, and in my opinion FMA1’s music draws you towards the characters more than towards the events. It takes more time to dwell on the grief and sad moments of the characters, and when there’s a dark shroud settling over the lives of these characters, the music REMAINS dark/sad/ominous. It doesn’t offer this ray of light until there actually IS a ray of light coming. And all of this is a nonexpert opinion, but it’s wholly my experience with FMA1.
12. Embarking on a different route, FMA1 explores the dark side of human imperfection. I’ll get to the part about humans being human being a good thing, but it’s also got a lot of nasty stuff to it. Sins are actually shown for what they are because FMA1 isn’t trying to emphasize that imperfection makes us human; it’s only emphasizing what some of that imperfection is running around and doing—namely, killing thousands of people and hurting scores more.
13. FMA 03 gives Lust character development. Other than Sloth and Gluttony, Lust is the only intelligent Homunculus in FMA:B/manga who is not given any sympathy. FMA1 says thank you very much and gives her a storyline anyway.
14. Roy is exposed for being a dick. You HAVE to be a pretty big dick to kill so many people. You have to let go of a lot of your sympathy to do something like that. I’d guess this is the part of FMA1 that manga fans despise most. Well, in the manga, Roy STILL killed thousands of people. And I did read the Ishval volume—he’s not whining and barely able to look at somebody when he kills them. He’s cold. What FMA 2003 does is continue that character he showed in Ishval—he wants to redeem himself, and YES, that’s a HUGE reason why he’s trying to reach the top. I know we like to believe in heroes who have no selfish motivations, but this hero DID have selfish motivations. FMA1 brings that out, and if it’s not pretty? A mass murderer isn’t a role model and even if Roy chose the right path in FMA:B, it was redemption. Not an example to follow. Do I love the concept of his character? Absolutely. Do I think he’s a normal guy who is a victim of that war? Hell no. Believing in Roy as a completely unselfish and wholesome individual is almost the same to me as believing that Bush was one—as he sent people into a war based on pride. Bush had good intentions too. Just sayin’.
15. The parallel world allows FMA to parallel even further some of the European history it is based off of. Nuff said.
16. The relationship between Izumi and the boys is explored more. Just saying; I fell in love with that relationship in the 03 because they just had more scenes together. HEARTSTRINGS.
17. The relationship between Ed and Al is deepened. Two brothers who would die for each other in a heartbeat. Story’s been done before (and wherever it has been done I am likely to watch or read it). But the circumstances have probably never been so drastic, where they share a bond deeper than blood because they’ve been through hell—almost literally. The first anime focuses more on Ed and Al’s relationship.
18. I love my canon pairings, but FMA 2003 explores the idea of several non-canon pairings, if only in hints and subtext. Once again, enough said. It’s kind of nice when those ships the fans might’ve liked even from the beginning of the manga get some coverage. How much fiction actually gets a second chance to look at alternate pairings? FMA1 is a rare opportunity for non-canon fans.
19. I am quite convinced Arakawa incorporated a twisted version of a lot of the things FMA1 did into the manga. Roy loses an eye in the 03…Roy goes blind in FMA:B. Ed dies by being stabbed in the gut in the 03…Ed nearly dies by having his abdomen punctured with a pole in FMA:B. Winry ends up traveling with Ed and Al, south in FMA1, and north in FMA:B. Riza nearly loses her mind when she thinks Roy is dead after Roy kills Bradley; Riza breaks down when Lust indicates Roy is dead in FMA:B.
20. FMA1 explores automail just a bit in “Her Reason”. Winry wants Ed to appreciate automail and later explains it’s an extension of him. I don’t say that BECAUSE I’m an EdWin fan. Looking back, things like this helped make me a Winry AND an EdWin fan. Winry is so passionate about her craft that she wants to make an arm that is so good, it becomes a part of Ed…where he doesn’t even miss his old arm. Alright, give Winry flak all you want. But the boys’ quest looked about as impossible as Zuko looking for the Avatar (sorry if you don’t understand that reference). And she just wanted to help them any way she could. Funny how Winry’s storyline is smaller in the 03 and they still gave her little things like this.
21. In some ways, the military’s cruelty is explored more. I already mentioned that Roy is exemplified as a coldhearted bastard, but the military’s continuing abuse of the Ishvalans is emphasized as well. Not even to mention the storyline where Rose is raped and has the child of an Amestrian soldier.
22. The past literally haunts people. Mentioned this before because it’s about the Homunculi, but what better way to bring out the grief the 2003 intended to emphasize than to have mistakes literally following you? This really isn’t even worth a comparison to FMA1’s counterpart and inspiration. When I’d only seen the 2003, I thought this was just such a brilliant plot device. I still think so.
23. It emphasizes Ed and Roy’s relationship. Two disclaimers: That relationship can be interpreted any way you want in either version, and secondly, I do in fact love the trust they had between them in FMA:B/manga. That pulled at my heartstrings. But what the 03 did was bring out some of Ed’s inherent distrust in the military and in Roy. Roy, bastard I think he is, did have good intentions..but sometimes it was hard for him to manifest those good intentions because he had goals of his own. Goals that would help people eventually, but another discussion, that. The distrust, the fact that Roy was so willing to sacrifice to help Ed—and in the manga he was too, but this fact is made clear by FMA1—Ed looking to Roy as an example (for better or worse), maybe as a father figure…I just loved some of the moments they had.
..And honestly? Once people get over themselves and realize that someone who commits mass murder might just be a bit of a jerk, I’m just saying, they’d see the brilliance in either interpretation of his character.
24. It took more time to bring out the fatherly role Hughes had in Ed and Al’s life. This has more to do with how much time Hughes was allotted in each series than it does with what actually happened. They had time to insert more moments between the two.
25. Following up on Hughes, it makes you look at Hughes for being a good person rather than a good soldier. Hughes never fought in the Ishval war. He stayed at home. Good fighter? Well yes. He fought Homunculi. But even better is the emphasis placed on his relationships and his loyalty to what is right.
26. It emphasizes Scar’s guilt. “A mind who inflicts suffering cannot rest.” Again, one theme that severely diverges from FMA:B/manga is the idea that redemption isn’t possible sometimes. It DOES become possible for some characters, but not all of them, and not in a very picture-perfect way. I understand what the manga was trying to do and I fangirl over it as much as I do the 2003, but sometimes, redemption doesn’t happen.
27. Winry’s mini-speech on what happened to her parents. “I’d imagine the people who killed my parents as demons…but now I know the man who did it and I respect him somehow.” Besides emphasizing a depth I think the manga/FMA:B implied in Winry (she sees horrible things and is able to know the gray area and see past her own feelings to understand greater things), this speech brings out the gray area when it comes to interpreting people and actions. And…what greater controversy among the fandom is there than how we interpret Roy and his actions?
28. It is character-driven. That’s not to say that FMA:B/manga’s characters were bad in any way, but they were shaped by the circumstances around them. In FMA1, it’s more like the other way around: FMA’s characters, with all their sins and some of their nobility and selfishness and sacrifices (oh no here come the feelings)…they shaped the plot themselves for the most part. And because the plot moved more slowly, we got to look at these characters in slow-motion, frame by frame, emotion by emotion, action by action.
29. Ed and Al’s fight over Al possibly being fake is dragged out longer. Once again, premise is important here: FMA:B/manga was emphasizing that unselfish people resolve conflict and grief quickly. FMA1 takes almost the opposite stance; people who are in that much pain will have a harder time getting past that and any conflict that comes up. Ed and Al’s argument is a good example of this.
30. Ed actually gets a chance to make the Philosopher’s Stone. This is one temptation Ed never faced in FMA:B/manga, so it was an interesting exploration of human selfishness and human nature. What would Ed do if he had the chance? Especially when circumstances seem hazy and we’ve got condemned prisoners as ingredients? (Hey, if Roy isn’t deserving of death just because he did good things after doing bad things then this is also a moral gray area.)
31. Al is used against Ed. We know Ed and Al’s bond is deep, and we know the military liked to use Ed’s ties to family/friends against him. So why does that never happen in the manga? Well, I suppose Al isn’t a pacifist in the manga. That’s one reason. Another is that Ed was deemed more important to the villain’s devices in FMA1 than Al was (both of them were critical to Father’s plan in FMAB/manga by contrast). But it sure made for a heartwrenching storyline because Ed’s closest bond is used against him.
32. Following on that, Al’s blood seal is vulnerable. Okay, okay, reason with me however you want here. I don’t quite understand how that seal could be invincible when Al gets buried in snow, etc. in the manga/Brotherhood. (I could use some guidebooks to how alchemy is supposed to work before I make an absolute determination here.) But it does seem entirely possible that Al’s blood seal would be his kryptonite.
33. Ed’s attitude toward the rest of the world is revealed clearly. Early on in the manga and Brotherhood, Ed, of course, had this attitude where he didn’t like accepting help and he really didn’t have a lot of trust in anyone but he and Al. Ed later changes his mind, but the 2003 continues the idea that Ed only fully trusts Al. “We’re all we’ve got”, he says after dealing with a serial killer. Time and again, when Ed encounters the things he does in FMA, he has two choices: move forward and accept that evil can happen while people are still good, or become jaded and cynical toward the world. In FMA:B/manga, he did the former. In the 03, he does the latter.
34. Winry being captured by Barry the Chopper heightens the feeling Ed has—that his loved ones will be used against him if he is too close to them. This continues throughout the series, such as when Ed keeps Hughes and Roy/gang out of the loop to protect them. Winry is used as a hostage in the manga/Brotherhood, so I think this is especially relevant that she is nearly killed. Even though EdWin is far from canon in FMA1, there are still things like this that emphasize how close Ed is/was to her—and why he thought he had to sever his ties.
35. PURELY referring to what the characters look like…Al resembles his mom. I mean, Trisha was only the impetus for all the boys’ struggles in the first place. One of her sons looking like her isn’t so bad, is it?
36. Nina Tucker is referenced more throughout the series. For something that affected Ed and Al so much, I’m just glad that they’re so emotionally tied that they hammer Nina’s story home time and again.
37. Hughes’s funeral scene and the aftermath. I’ll grant this might be preference, but I liked several things about the way it was done in FMA1: the music being played hints at cruel fate (once again a theme unique to the 03 and not anything the manga was obligated to do)…and for all the criticisms I do have (gasp—I have criticisms for this series? I’m an objective being? NO WAY!) for Hawkeye’s character in it…speaking from a Royai perspective, I love that Riza automatically understood what Roy meant about rain. She didn’t even hesitate. She just knew to acknowledge rain, and that might be one of the only moments I liked Hawkeye in the 03. (Hawkeye in general was better in Brotherhood, IMO. But again, that’s still based on premises that don’t have to start a war…)
38. Following up on Nina’s story, I thought the confrontation between Ed and Shou Tucker was more emotional. From the music used to the way Nina confronted Ed to, hell, even maybe the lighting in the room, I just got more feels from that version. Not saying the confrontation isn’t feel-worthy no matter which you watch, but I think it’s fairly agreeable that FMA1 heightened the grief in that scene.
39. Ed and Roy go back and forth on the principle of vengeance. This is human nature. We might know what’s right and want to do it, but that which we hate, we do. That which we want to do…we don’t do it. Because desires and pain get in the way, and Ed and Roy certainly had their fair share of desires and pain (and guilt).
40. It epitomizes humanity without downplaying humanity’s faults. I understand that FMA:B was trying to say that sometimes your faults are a good thing (i.e. Greed is also hope, wrath is understandable, etc.). But once again, sometimes those faults are very, very bad. As in causes destruction and takes from innocents bad.
41. Ed’s speech about how “We’re only human”. “We couldn’t even save a little girl!”—enough said. Emotional moment that brings out Nina’s death and brings out just how horrible the Elrics’ circumstances are. Ed also says “we’re only human” in the manga/Brotherhood, but this is fleshed out more.
42. Tucker brings out that Ed’s obsession with alchemy is about more than redemption or bringing someone back/restoring their body. Ed wants to put his mind to use—even doing sickening things. And alchemy is a science that can—and did, even in the manga—drive people insane. So FMA1 brings out Ed’s insanity with scenes like the one where he contemplated making the Stone.
43. FMA1 treats alchemy like a religion. Alchemists worship this science like it can do anything, and they justify themselves by saying they worked and equivalent exchange takes effect. But sometimes alchemy ends up being this craft to work miracles when someone doesn’t want to do things the hard way. FMA1 strives to bring out that side of alchemy—the side that makes it an idol that PREVENTS you from moving forward rather than allowing it. (Some themes I’m going on about are present to some degree in both versions, but depending on what you’re talking about, generally one version expounds and the other limits said theme.)
44. FMA1 leaves the serious moments alone. FMA 2003 had plenty of comedy, and although a lot of people say it downplayed what comedy it did have to be depressing, I must disagree. FMA 2003 never interrupted serious, sober moments with something funny. Now I’m not saying that’s always a bad idea to do it—a lot of anime/manga does the same thing. Puts anything positive on that negative spot to erase it. But I’m just saying…some people prefer to contemplate those sad/angry/serious moments without a gag interrupting.
45. Ed is confronted with the idea of killing and actually has to do it. He is in both versions, but the difference is that clearly evil people were asking him to do it in the manga/Brotherhood. It’s slightly more ambiguous when he has to confront Greed or do things that any ordinary soldier would be called upon to do—without a corrupt government run by hideous immortal beings.
46. Continuing the emphasis on parallels between religion and alchemy, Cornello is dead serious when he confronts Ed about his mistakes. Whatever Cornello is doing, it appears that he genuinely believes Ed has insulted God, and this sets the stage for a comparison and clash of science vs faith and the point where alchemy makes the two collide.
47. It uses equivalent exchange to justify vengeance. Sounds ridiculous until you realize that a murderer is punished with death in most cases in our system…why couldn’t it be extended the way Scar used it?
48. It made Al’s pleas to Ed—after Ed was ready to let Scar kill him—more serious. They were pretty serious in both versions, once again. But the way the dialogue is phrased and the downsizing of funny expressions makes this scene very poignant to me. (Remember, I’m attached to all of this. This is not a debate I’m trying to score points in just because I might be able to.)
49. Izumi wisely asks the Elrics whether their pursuit of restoration is the attempt to fix one mistake with another. For a long time in both series, Ed and Al were still after human transmutation. FMA1 does ask some logical questions about their journey and what they find on it.
50. Izumi’s relationship with her son is explored. Obviously this is impossible in FMA:B/manga, so no fault to it. But quite a moving storyline, especially considering the Homunculus she created is Wrath. He acts like her in temperament, only to a bigger extreme, and he has alternating moments of wishing to acknowledge her as his mother and shunning her.
51. It shows flashbacks of the military’s chimera experiments. This adds to the ghastly horror that is 1. the military’s cruelty and lack of morals, even among humans as much as among Homunculi, 2. the plight of the hybrid human-animal species that are introduced in FMA.
52. Following on that, FMA1 makes Shou Tucker a chimera. Besides that it makes you question equivalent exchange and whether that’s fair trade, what irony.
53. Immortality is the endgame for the villains. I think that’s interesting because Ed and Al were trying to defy the natural order of things by reversing Trisha’s death. This is only an extension of that idea, and immortality is a subject I love to see covered when resurrection and supernatural beings are being introduced into the story.
54. It lets Sheska and Winry use some logic. Besides that I like someone as smart as Sheska having a bigger role, she and Winry figure out a huge military secret all on their own. That suits what is supposed to be above-average intelligence for both of them.
55. Hohenheim is brought down to the level of a human. He makes the same mistake in both versions, but in FMA:B/manga that mistake is almost this deal where his absence allowed his boys to grow and save Amestris. In FMA1, Hohenheim is shown to love his boys while being a sinner who is as prone to mistakes as the next man.
56. For people who really hate the downplaying of Royai, they sure had some cute moments in the 2003 together. Roy putting glasses on Hawkeye and noting how nice she looks, for example. Little things FMA1 indulged.
57. Speaking of little things, how about the smile newly christened state alchemist Edward gives Winry when she asks if she can buy things? FMA:B/manga did have moments where they made it clear Ed cares for Winry, but sometimes it’s the moments that come when nothing bad is happening and things look kind of peachy.
58. Ed’s “Even when our eyes are closed, there’s a whole world out there that lives outside ourselves and our dreams” line. Ed emphasizes a lesson he learns in both versions to some extent: The world is bigger than his desires, and until he realizes that and acts that way, he’ll never truly earn anything.
59. “Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy’s first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world’s one, and only, truth. But the world isn’t perfect, and the law is incomplete. Equivalent Exchange doesn’t encompass everything that goes on here, but I still choose to believe in its principle, that all things do come at a price, that there’s an ebb and a flow, a cycle, that the pain we went through, did have a reward, and that anyone who’s determined and perseveres, will get something of value in return, even if it’s not what they expected.”
Okay, so this is a quote from 03, but has much meaning that Brotherhood FAILS to keep consistent within itself. So what if this last point is based on sentimental value? Tell me how that’s not positive as a sharp contrast to all the grief in the series. Tell me how that’s not deep when people realize that the way of the world might not be input equals output but that hard work and blood, sweat and tears DOES amount to something. After all the HELL they went through and they can still say that? That’s remarkable and if you think about it, it’s only a deeper expansion of Ed’s “Fullmetal heart” quote. (Or I suppose vice versa since I don’t think it’s ridiculous that Arakawa might’ve taken inspiration from the above quote.)So…if we just like the 03 for sentimental value, I just wrote 59 paragraphs more or less on that. So if it’s sentimental, it’s not shallow.
---
(My input): Lastly, Winry, despite not being about to fight, uses her head, along with Sheska, to research into Huhges’ death. The females are actually pretty great. We also get Black Hayate’s origins.

hey there! i was wondering what are your top five worth it episodes and unsolved episodes based on the food/spooky content and then top five for the boys being cute?
a very interesting ask thank you anon!!!
bfu vids: spooky factor (subjective, i am a very easy person to scare)
3 cases of ghosts/demons: fucc that drawing of sallie? easily the scariest thing i’ve seen on buzzfeed unsolved other than every installation of the hot daga
voodoo: goddamn when ryan was in the kitchen where the murder happened and sth was tugging on his sleeve i got CHILLS
boy in the box: that picture of the boy’s head. nuff said.
vulture mine: ok but that door incident was creepy as hell, coupled with shane’s amused laughter like homeboy was not even chuffed abt that and that made it 1000x scarier
waverly hills hospital: THE BALL WHAT THE FCUCKIN HELL
bfu vids: personal favorites
voodoo: this also takes the cake bc it’s one of the instances where shane gets a bit candid abt his thoughts on the supernatural (him wanting to believe in sth??? wow my corazon? BROKEN). also i adore bloody mary and her attempt to get ryan to channel his scared thoughts into sth more positive; just !!! overall this episode was a GIFT. also: the scene where shane just has to peek over the cemetery and ryan is jumping just to get a glimpse of it is cute as hell
db cooper: giggly bois!!!! shane choking on bourbon bc he’s laughing!! shane making ryan laugh!!! a fun, flirty episode that wasn’t too scary for my easily frightened ass!!!
3 cases of ghosts/demons: shoutout to pepe he was awesome. shane ofc in this episode gave us a taste of what we were to expect from now on (”rock and roll buckaroos lemme sit my ass on a pentagram it’s lit!!”)
goatman bridge: “as we snuff these candles so too do we snuff you from this mortal world – you fuckin wimp” iconic. shane just decimated the goatman with one sentence when will your fave EVER. also the ambience of this ep!! the candles!! hazy atmosphere!! shane lazily sprawled in a salt ring!! closeups of both their hands!! i’m ded!!
legend of krampus: i mean… cmon. gr8 animations, gr8 banter
bfwi vids: food factor (also subjective, as i can’t distinguish if the food looks good merely because the boys are eating them and nutting over the flavors or presentation or because they genuinely appeal to me)
fried chicken: yooo red rooster’s chicken looked dope, and aunt sylvia’s and momofuku noodle bar also had formidable chicken. one of the few episodes where all 3 restaurants were on the same lvl with each other
ribs: succulent ribs and AWESOME SIDE DISHES. also excessive moaning
hot dogs: appealing looking dogs!! also adam got a whole meal to himself at tokyo dog!! my heart was so happy!!
korean bbq: not only was there an amazing array of korean dishes, but the brotp between adam, andrew, evan, and steven was REAL man i love them (also chingu cheers!!)
buffet: i mean my food faves center around places that had to offer a lot of food and this ep delivered
bfwi vids: personal favorites
cocktail: gay
wine: gay
brunch: gay
steak (australia): gay
game day food: gay

While waving knife at crackers. "Come at me."
"Can they STOP putting blame on us?! Like, this isnt our fault! Stop saying PA is doing a poor job! Fight me!"
"I can't feel my legs." "That's great."
"How hungry are you? Yes? No? Maybe so?"
"Did he just say we should fire our Secretary of State?" "Probably." "Great. I don't like this guy."
"Blink. Blink."
"I either talk to fast or hit the table, pick one."
"You can see the struggle not to say 'shit on the wall'"
"Ew." "Ew what?" "Phillip Schuyler did not look good."
"Tastes like banana bread soup."
"I shwot him wight between da wibs. I walk towards him but I am aswered away. I get a dwink. I hear waiwing in da stweets. Someone twells me I bettwer hide." "I'm choking-"
"Inching? He's 27 away!"
"I called it!"
"Well Ben and Courtney did cause lots of excitement." "And Courtney. 'Nuff said."
"Dad's been kidnapped."
"'how dare you speak about Pennsylvanians as if we aren't the best kind of people in this nation"" -dude on tv. Queue wildly waving arms and happy faces
"We're heading over so you guys can learn gun safety-" "I shwoot him wight between da wibs-"
Raises hand like in school. "Dad! Dad! Dad!"
"Looks like someone tried to draw an H with their eyes closed."
*sees Lin-Manuel Miranda on commercial and proceeds to scream for 10 minutes*
"If we are related to James McHenry then that means legally Fort McHenry is ours." "I wish that's how it worked. We pull up, kick everyone out, raid the cannons. Want this back, come get it!"
"Fort Jenkens? Is that why this is a town-that's-not-a-town? Cause it was a fort?" "Ya, probably."
"You're the 'fight me' generation."
"Franklin? Did we seriously name a town after Benjamin Franklin?" "Sure."
"Monroe county? We need to stop naming places after people."
"When we lived on AZ, in social studies we were doing a test about temoerate, tropical, amd whatever the third one is. Well, we had used everything but tropical and then question was what region is Pennsylvania. Everyone, except me, chose tropical because we hadnt used that yet. And I was the only one who got it right when I answered temperate. And everyone was like, it is? How? And I was like, ya, its temperate. It can snow one day and be 100 degrees the next. I would know, I lived there all my life."
"It was like 60 degrees in the last week of Nov. out there in Arizona and after we got to school my math teacher went 'are you cold?" and I was wearing shorts and said 'no? Should I be?' And she goes 'its 60 degrees out. And raining.' And I go 'ya?' and she pauses for a moment before saying 'oh ya. You are from the north." "You're from the north. Wow."
