2020 End of Year Post - cdrama edition

This is only going to cover cdramas that aired in 2020; if I had to make a post about all the cdramas I watched this year, I would still be doing it in three months...

Overall it’s been a fairly decent cdrama year (certainly better than the very lacklustre kdrama year.) It’s no miracle that 2019 was (so many excellent dramas!) but overall pretty solid.

DRAMAS WATCHED

(In order of liking from least to most as opposed to pure quality; I am including if I’ve seen enough to make up my mind; yes I realize that’s inaccurate, but that’s my list)

44 The Legend of Jing Yan - the worst cdrama I have seen this year, and possibly the worst drama of 2020, period. The hero and heroine were both uncharismatic, incapable of acting and saddled with such shrilly moronic characters, the only suspense was how they haven’t both perished long since from forgetting to breathe. Nor was anyone in the rest of the cast much better; the screenplay was written by a lower mammal and the cinematography was the best a third-rate wedding cinematographer could offer. Stay the HELL away from this one.

43 Unicorn Girl - the only unicorn about this bland yet irritating piece of pap was the fact that I was supposed to believe the leads are hockey players.

42 Autumn Cicada - I like spy stories, Allen Ren, and Republican Era settings. I can tune out Communist propaganda with the best of them. Yet, the propaganda ate the story to such a degree that there was nothing left; pre magic change Pinocchio was less wooden then this narrative.

41 You Complete Me - no you do not.

40 Skate into Love - the only positive thing I can say about this is that at least it’s better than Unicorn Girl, if for no other reason that only one of them is supposed to be a hockey player.

39 Irreplaceable Love - how do you make a story about fake siblings with a mad mother falling for each other boring? I don’t know, ask the makers of this.

38 Eternal Love Rain - I hate to rain on their parade, but these two actors cannot act, have about as much chemistry as a piece of bread, and are trapped in a story perfect for entertaining the mental abilities of the leads of Jin Yan.

37 For Married Doctoress - ummmm, you could do worse I guess. It only made me break out in mild hives. The sadistic ending did make me laugh though.

36 Dance of the Sky Empire - why you get Xu Kai and waste him in this insipid mess of a story is beyond me.

35 Love Designer - it’s inoffensive except to my sense of entertainment. There is nothing wrong with it but oh God is it bland.

34 Love a Lifetime - It felt like a lifetime watching this, but I didn’t love it. The story is incoherent, the actors have no chemistry and it’s all an epic waste of time.

33 Love is Sweet - so sweet it gave me diabetes. I like Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu, but there is literally no plot. I don’t need to sink into a plotless morass to watch pretty people engage in PG-rated make-outs. I am an adult with access to stronger stuff if I am thus inclined, though to be fair they could get x-rated and I still wouldn’t be able to sit through so many episodes of plotlessness for that.

32 Fake Princess - I love Zhao Yi Qin, but the guy needs to pick better projects. The female lead in this one has the voice and personality that can strip paint but the story is also doing nobody any favors.

31 The Changan Youth - I lost my brain checking this out. I had to go and read a dense treatise on medieval coinage or Mayan farming to try to recover it.

30 My Dear Destiny - kinda cheesy fun. It honestly shouldn’t be as low except it really feels like community theater.

29 Handsome Siblings - why is the Nic Tse version so good and this one so bad? True mystery for the ages. Chen Zhe Yuan is the sole reason this isn’t lower, because that kid tries SO HARD to make this drama bearable and almost succeeds. I can’t wait to see him in Sha Po Lang which actually will give him something to do.

28 In a Class of Her Own - see my comment on The Changan Youth. But at least Song Weilong is gorgeous to look at.

27 General’s Lady - inoffensive, pretty and so utterly pointless.

26 The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion - those two leading actors are a no go to me but at least they considerately acted with each other instead of ruining two dramas for me. It’s very pretty though.

25 Jiu Liu Overlord - it’s a mess and I bailed, but I placed it this high merely due to the fact that Lai Yi finally gets a leading role and he’s sexy as fuck and I am shallow. Whoever styled Bai Lu should never work again except at a circus, however.

24 Cross Fire - not my genre and Luhan will always look too much like my cousin for comfort, but it’s a surprisingly gripping and dark drama. I liked it!

23 God of Lost Fantasy - if you want to watch a mediocre wuxia/xianxia, this is not a bad choice. Probably better than Legend of Fei actually, because at least it doesn’t have an A-list cast to waste and gives us Sheng Yilun himbo and shirtless.

22 Renascence - the insane cuts (it went from 70 eps to 36!!!) made a fairly cheesy story into a total mess. But I had a good time until I finally bailed mainly because of the male lead (Chen Zhe Yuan yet again carrying a not-good 2020 drama on his shoulders; the guy should be nicknamed Atlas) and the insane but in a fun way story. The female lead (both the character and the actress) were not up to par but oh well.

21 Legend of Fei - only this high because objectively there is nothing I disliked it. But there is nothing I liked either. The most uninspired drama on the list. If you could eat cardboard, this is what it would taste like.

20 Ever Night 2 - compared to EN1, it’s a waste of film. On its own merits, it’s not very good (the cast replacements are uniformly inferior and Dylan Wang is so wrong for Ning Que I cannot even put it into words; the script is useless.) But it had some parts I loved so very VERY much (all the shippy stuff was perfection) so I don’t feel too bitter.

19 Castle in the Sky 2 - a lovely if not too complex fairy tale. It is inferior to its prequel because it doesn’t have Zhang Ruo Yun who elevated it, but it’s still a solid bit of fun.

18 The Great Ruler - it’s very high fantasy, very pretty, and surprisingly involving.

17 (tie) Legend of Two Sisters in the Chaos - the secondary couple steals the show but the rest is not too bad if not too involving.

17 Legend of Awakening - a solid bit of fun with a seriously BDSM streak (theme this year apparently - but come on, the lead’s powers only activate when he’s in extreme pain!) It’s a bit generic and the costuming is done by a blind person, not to mention the OTP is a NOTP, but the rest of relationships (romantic and platonic) are wonderful (I live for the found siblings story in this one) and I like most of the characters.

16 Consummation - a rare modern cdrama I liked; a sweet coming of age story (and love story) even if wrapped in a pretty weird virtual reality concept.

15 Oops the King is in Love - this is how you do a low budget, sweet, silly piece of fluff. Our heroine pretends to be a eunuch and crosses paths with a powerless young king and they are adorable, even more so than the drama.

14 Song of Glory - pretty solid, though draggy and I didn’t love the toothpaste filter. But A+ cast, excellent leading couple chemistry, Li Qin being a BAMF and a leading man (Qin Hao) who is actually an adult.

13 And the Winner is love - objectively kind of a mess (and the heroine has the brainpower of a gnat), but the OTP chemistry is excellent and Luo Yunxi fighting and flirting with a fan as finally a leading man is worth the price of admission.

12 Miss S - snazzy and snappy and stylish and whatever else starts with S.

11 Eternal Love of Dream - I don’t know if it would work for you as well if you weren’t a hardcore shipper for this OTP in Three Lives but I was and this was such a darling, wonderful, shippy delight; plus I love this type of high fantasy.

10 (tie) Maiden Holmes - solid and sweet and a wonderful OTP. Proves that functional doesn’t have to mean boring. If you watch one cross-dressing drama this year make it this one.

10 Qin Dynasty Epic - srs bsns history epic. I am not far into it but it’s so good and smart and visually stunning (if you love battles, this one is for you.)

9 Love Lasts Two Minds - I adored this so much more than I should objectively have, but it’s so beautiful (and no I am not just referring to Alan Yu’s face) and the OTP has wonderful chemistry and the story is solid, and the whole trope of her memory being wiped but falling for him all over again while he’s constantly and utterly devoted is a fave; plus he’s in pain and semi-dyng for most of it so sluuuurp (happy ending, don’t worry)

8 To Love - yes, a modern drama is this high! But it involves intensity, tragedy, genuine adults and sexiness that is Lin Gengxin. And there is an actual plot and darkness OMG!

7 Legend of Xiao Chuo - so beautiful, so fun, so full of gorgeousness of Shawn Dou. Plus, Liao is a rare setting for a cdrama and there are a lot of characters and stories I liked a LOT. Less ship content than I wanted but more than I expected.

6 The Romance of Tiger and Rose - so so delightful. I was literally laughing out loud. I have no idea if it will work as well if one isn’t a seasoned watcher of period cdrama/reader of web novels, with bonus for watching/reading Goodbye My Princess, but it was a complete delight for me (and yes, I shipped for real, as well. Best of both worlds.)

5 Twisted Fate of Love - Jin Han gets a leading period drama role! And he’s enjoying it to the hilt, excellent as a smart, twisty bastard who is also charming and so madly in love with heroine. Sun Yi is beautiful and tough and her chemistry with JH is on fire, the story never drags, and it’s so twisty and fun and just awesome.

4 Love In Between - the most underrated drama on this list. It has no big names or big budget, but it’s wuxia that’s clever, driven, tragic, hopeful and so beautifully shot. Three separate (amazing) OTPs, a leading man who is so not typical (a doctor who cannot fight and who never acquires this ability) and who is intense and smart and damaged, a heroine who puts her quest ahead of her emotions, an unhealthy degree of involvement by yours truly. This is a drama Fei should have been.

3 Love and Redemption - such a lovely, addictive, utterly romantic fairy tale. I was obsessed with it for a reason. All the tropes you love and some you didn’t know you did, a star-crossed OTP to the nth power (and a secondary OTP I hardcore love), a twisty yet coherent plot, some insane chemistry and so much whump and hurt/comfort they must have bought blood packets in bulk.

2 Go Ahead - yes, I can’t believe it either. A contemporary slice of life cdrama made it this high on my list. But the way it feels so real, the found family perfection, the characters I love and loathe, the perfect cherry of a wonderful OTP that hits my narrative kinks on top, and just a perfect storm of loveliness all around with this one.

1 The Wolf - is that any surprise to anyone who’s checked out this tumblr for the last couple of months? Tragic, intense and gorgeous; so romantic and angsty and passionate it made me lose my mind (though some of it was gone the moment the camera panned to Darren Wang) - all my favorite tropes and then some; this is a drama that may not be perfect but it is 100% and then beyond perfect for ME.

FAVORITE DRAMA

The Wolf - I have seen objectively better cdramas; even this year. But it has been literal years since I have been this hardcore obsessed, this utterly pleased, this emotionally catered to and devastated at once. A beautiful dark fairy tale that manages to own me despite the storytelling gaps due to censorship, it took me for one of the biggest emotional roller coaster rides of my drama watching career. Visually gorgeous, poetic, intense, and so romantic it took my breath away, this is not just my favorite cdrama of 2020, it’s my favorite drama this year period, and the one cdrama this year to make it into my permanent Top 10 cdramas list.

WORST DRAMA

Legend of Jin Yan - see my write up for it for why as I refuse to waste more time on this stupid mess.

FAVORITE MALE CHARACTER

Wolfie, The Wolf - he is such a haunted, tormented, complex, dark mess; loving and violent, severely damaged and with a hidden yearning softness, longing and aloof. And the amount of charisma and sheer masculine sex appeal Darren Wang brings to the role is insane and not something I see much of in a cdrama. Plus, that character arc with its rapid fall and slow painful redemption is A++++

Runner Up: Sifeng, Love and Redemption - has a male lead ever loved more utterly and selflessly, suffered more thoroughly and beautifully, and managed to have such chemistry with both his leading lady and his leading man (that his leading lady temporarily turned into) at once? The answer is no.

Almost made the cut - Feng Xi, Twisted Fate of Love, Han Shuo, The Romance of Tiger and Rose, Qing Ci, Love in Between.

FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER

Xiao Qian, The Romance of Tiger and Rose - so funny, so much the reason this drama was such a delight. I adore her beyond words.

NEEDS TO BE MURDERED

Murder Daddy, The Wolf - I am sad the censors robbed us of seeing him die on screen. He was fully human but nonetheless managed to be the worst monster in a drama full of literal ones.

Ling Xiao’s Mom, Go Ahead - I hate her so much I don’t want to look up her name. She abused the kid, the disappeared and came back to abuse him some more. I mean she literally gave her child mental health issues. She is the WORST.

FAVORITE SHIP

Xing’er x Wolfie, The Wolf - are you kidding me? Who else could it ever be for me? They destroyed each other and saved each other, sworn enemies and childhood lovers, soulmates and epic messes, they couldn’t live with or without each other. The longing, the passion, the intensity, the angst, the epicness. LIKE THERE ARE NO WORDS!!!!

FAVORITE SECONDARY OTP

Si Yuan, Shen Manqing, Love in Between - I loved them as much and often more than the main OTP. So much angst and passion and a happy ending! She is a seeming sect darling (except the sect is horrible and also sexist so her only worth is as a marriage candidate) and he’s an information broker who is actually one of the members of a destroyed sect that’s blamed for the massacre of her family. That chemistry and yearning is insane. The scene where she touches his face when he’s unconscious was in serious running for my favorite scene of 2020.

NOTP

Legend of Awakening - I have never seen a couple that didn’t just have no chemistry but exhibited actual revulsion towards each other before watching Chen Feiyu and Cheng Xiao try to act as lovers in this one. It was almost entertaining to be honest.

FAVORITE SCENE

It’s a tie and both are from The Wolf. One is a sequence where Wolfie marches to the walls alone, seeking death at Xing’er’s hands and the whole sequence with the battle and rescue follows. The other is the intercut between Xing’er going to her wedding and Wolfie going to his execution, and the auto-da-fe being intercut with her wedding.

BIGGEST CRUSH

Wolfie, The Wolf - Ummm have you seen this tumblr lately, it’s basically a drool shrine to the man.

BEST SCENE STEALER CHARACTER

Yelü Yansage, The Legend of Xiao Chuo - I have loved this actor since The Myth and he continued to competently steal every scene he was in.

NEEDS A SEQUEL

To Love - come out of the coma, dammit!!!!!!!

NEEDS A DIRECTOR’S CUT

The Wolf - duh. It started out as 59 eps and got cut to 49. I reaiize some stuff is never gonna get put in due to censorship, but some of the stuff that got cut got for time reasons because they were deluded and hoping to get a TV broadcast so ep count had to be under 50. I mean I doubt the censors would care if they kept scenes of Wolfie building her a swing or whatever. I really really want a director’s cut the way Goodbye My Princess did even if like with GMP it’s only three extra eps. Hell, I will take extra three minutes, as long as those three minutes are Darren Wang shirtless or with a sword. Ahem.

NEEDS SCISSORS TAKEN TO IT

The Song of Glory - it’s a fairly solid drama but honestly it didn’t need to be as long as it was and kind of got draggy and I got lost interest. (I could have gotten snarky and said all the dramas I didn’t like needed scissors taken to them in their entirety but decided to play nice.)

TOO MANY SCISSORS TAKEN TO IT

There are a number of dramas I could complain about with regard to this (hi there, darling The Wolf!) but this award goes to Renascence - poor Renascence was never going to be a masterpiece, but it had the potential to be a bit of good cheesy fun until it had its run time cut by more than half and became an incoherent piece of insanity.

TROPE THAT NEEDS TO DIE

Dumb shrill innocent heroine who can’t tie her shoes - see basically all the cdramas I didn’t like this year.

FAVORITE TROPE WE’VE SEEN A LOT OF

Male lead torture - I mean it’s always open season on that in cdramas, but between Love and Redemption, The Wolf, Love Lasts Two Minds, Love in Between and so on, it was a banner year!

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

Legend of Fei - what a waste of that cast; what a waste of our finite time on this Earth. What a waste of my intelligence to hope for something better and stick with it for a dozen eps. I have had stale wonderbread that had more personality than this drama.There is absolutely nothing that stands out about this drama in any way, from half-dimensional characters, to actors who are sleepwalking, to a plot that moves at the speed of an arthritic snail, to uninspired cinematography and direction, to lack of any chemistry between anyone in the cast. If paint-by-numbers was done by a group of particularly linear robots, it might come across the same way as this drama.

BIGGEST GOOD SURPRISE

The Wolf - honestly, I did not expect it to come out AT ALL EVER let alone to become my favorite drama of 2020. I was not familiar with the leading man (hahah), I liked Li Qin but wasn’t yet obsessed with her, and Xiao Zhan was excellent in The Untamed but I was hardly going to follow him from drama to drama (and I don’t do SLS any way.) And the trailer was enjoyable but unlike seemingly everyone, I didn’t think it was going to be some epic masterpiece. And then it came out and while it wasn’t objectively an epic masterpiece, it pulled out all the favorite tropes, shippy and narrative kinks from the deepest darkest recesses of my id. And I fell harder than I have in years.

2020 DRAMAS I HAVEN’T SEEN THAT I MOST WANT TO WATCH

None. Covid Year gave me PLENTY of time

BEST NON-2020 DRAMA I’VE WATCHED IN 2020

Novoland Eagle Flag and Joy of Life - they are in my Top 10 dramas from anywhere now. They are quite different except being smart and giving me protagonists to obsess over.

ETA: Also The Untamed because @idlewilds3 pointed out I actually watched it in 2020 even though I didn’t think so because this hellyear has lasted about three decades.

MOST ANTICIPATED IN 2021

I am gonna limit it to dozen and leaving out ones that aren’t necesarily supposed to air next year (Joy of Life 2, Love in Flames of War, Novoland Princess from Plateau.)

But now that I have gotten all that off my chest, let's talk about why I love it (since if I didn't love it, I wouldn't have such strong opinions). Basically my feelings on the OG SW trilogy are similar to my feelings on the OG LOTR trilogy, as that tumblr post floating around somewhere put it: sure, they have flaws, but also, they're perfect. I have a complicated relationship with the prequels, as do we all, since George Lucas cannot write dialogue or direct actors to save his life (stick to what you're good at, George, hire other people to do the rest), but even they have their moments. Like. Hit me with that "Across the Stars" love theme, John Williams. Gahh. Just like that.

Because... Star Wars wasn't actually this omnipresent corporate global entertainment monolith when it started out. It was a dorky low-budget indie sci-fi film in the 1970s which everyone thought was going to bomb. But it told a simple and compelling story in an interesting way, everyone agrees that ESB is one of the best films/sequels ever made, and then ROTJ gave it a happy ending while it was still okay to do that. My main thematic gripe with the Disney trilogy (I will try to keep those to a minimum, lol, but I have to bring it up to compare) is that it very clearly fell into the "actual happy endings are naive and unrealistic and a cynical postmodern audience won't accept anything less than things being Bad" trap that, yet again, we have GOT to thank for. It obviously existed to some degree before that, but GOT blew it up to huge levels, where the only valid situation or character is that which is Grimdark and Depressing. Which, in my view, misses the heart and soul of what SW is all about??

Like. ESB is genuinely dark. ANH was this fun plucky little sci-fi film where the scrappy good guys won the day against the Nazi stand-ins, as they were supposed to, and then ESB comes along (speaking of John Williams, let us all chant together, DUH DUH DUH DUHDUHDUH DUHDUHDUH, DUH DUH DUH DUHHHH DUHHH DUHHH DUHHHH) and things go... wrong. Leia and Han are on the run for most of the movie, then get captured and tortured by the Empire and and betrayed (however unwillingly) by Lando. The Rebellion is attacked on Hoth (I tell you, those fuckin AT-AT walkers were SCARY when you see it as a young kid for the first time), and forced into hiding. Luke loses his hand, doubts Obi-Wan and Yoda and realizes that his mentors are fallible, makes dumb mistakes, and of course gets hit with The Most Famous Line In Movie History. But it's also just adrenaline and excitement. THE ASTEROID FIELD! THE HAN-LEIA BANTER! THE FIRST LUKE-VADER DUEL! THE FACT THAT YOU HEAR TWO FRICKING NOTES OF THE IMPERIAL MARCH AND YOU'RE JUST LIKE OH YEAH OH YEAH OH YEAHHHH!

But also then... Return of the Jedi. It gets shat upon for the Ewoks and reusing the Death Star as the Big Bad and being supposedly cheesy and not as Thematically Dark as ESB. Which is all kinda silly, in my opinion, but also, can we talk about Luke Skywalker's character arc and how he chooses possibly the most radical compassion ever demonstrated by a hero in an action movie, let alone a space opera. He insists that Anakin Skywalker is still in there somewhere and puts his own neck on the line to prove it. Luke doesn't save the galaxy by being a Badass Jedi. He saves it by throwing away his lightsaber and saying "I will not fight you, Father." He saves it by trusting that even in the depths of darkness, Anakin can come back from the charred ruins of Darth Vader and finally do what he was supposed to do all along. He can end Palpatine for good and all (we don't talk about "Somehow Palpatine has returned" because it's nonsense, obviously). Anakin can avenge the Jedi and what was done to him and all the lies he believed and the pain he wreaked on the galaxy, even then. It's not too late. It's not too late. Like. I don't care if this is Lightweight or Childish or whatever. It makes me CRY every time I watch it. Especially the moment where Luke takes off Anakin’s helmet and sees how ruined he actually is under there, and yet the downfall and death of the trilogy’s chief villain is not triumphant at all but instead utterly heartbreaking. “You were right about me Luke... tell your sister... you were right.”

Excuse me, I need to just /CRIES INTENSELY/

Luke won't be tempted to the dark side for his own sake, but Leia's ("If you will not join me, then perhaps she will"). I likewise hold firmly that Anakin/Vader is one of the best movie villains/antiheroes of all time and likewise have many feelings and Strong Opinions about his arc, prequel writing clumsiness and eye-rollingly tepid love story aside. (See: he and Obi-Wan were deeply in love and in a way they still are, don't @ me. I have no problems with Padme and obviously stan Natalie Portman at all times, but Anakin and Obi-Wan’s relationship is the real love story, the heart of the prequels, and in some ways even the subsequent movies, the end.) And “so this is how democracy dies, with thunderous applause” is... raw af as a line. For being in a Star Wars prequel movie. What?? (Also, the Revenge of the Sith novelization had no business being as good as it was. If only that dude had also written the movie.)

Anyway, my point is: the OG trilogy had plenty of moments of staggering emotional weight and where things genuinely sucked for the good guys and the outcome wasn’t entirely clear. The difference is that it didn’t choose to dwell on them, and it allowed for a transformative fictional space where a happy ending, fiercely fought for and squarely earned, was the right outcome. We didn’t need to go back thirty years later and make everything suck for fear that a cynical modern audience couldn’t connect with it otherwise. (Like I said, we didn’t need the new movies at all, but Disney heard that Cha-Ching of the Almighty Dollar). Star Wars was sci-fi, sure, but it also had the fantasy elements that allowed a happy ending to be the right choice for what we saw the characters go through and the philosophy that carried us through the original trilogy.

Likewise it’s just... Peak as far as dynamics go. C-3PO the fussy metal butler who worries about Everything and R2-D2 who is the droid embodiment of YOLO? Flawless. Sassy scruffy space pirate and badass politician warrior princess bicker constantly, butt heads, drive each other crazy, and then fall in love? Iconic. (And has shaped my ship tastes for... all of eternity, oops.) The above-discussed transformation of Luke Skywalker, whiny ordinary teenage kid, to the truly great man who fulfills what Obi-Wan, Yoda, AND the rest of the entire Jedi order couldn’t manage to do, because of their own flaws and blind spots and black-and-white moral views that didn’t know what to do with a man who loved as passionately as Anakin Skywalker, for better or for worse? The guy who managed to save the galaxy with love? STAN.

So... what? The Disney trilogy decides to retcon all that, throw everything that they’ve fought for out the window, make Han, Leia, and Luke miserable and rejecting the roles they grew into in the original trilogy, and die without ever really reuniting or seeing each other again as a trio? The underlying message was that “these happy endings aren’t satisfactory/realistic/sophisticated enough” and idk, maybe it’s just the shitshow of the last few years, but I’d like to see some entertainment that had the cojones to tell me that despite all the darkness and despair, maybe there’s a chance for hope. (”Rebellions are built on hope,” thank you Only Valid New Star Wars Movie Rogue One.) And Rogue One worked so well, despite being utterly GUTTING as all the heroes died one by one, because we knew what was coming next (A New Hope) and that their sacrifice was going to be worth it. I don’t care if that’s “realistic” or not. As I’ve said before, that’s what stories are for, and if I only wanted things that were Real Life, I would only read the news. Besides, the idea that happy endings never happen in reality is equally bullshit. We as a culture need to accept that more, instead of finding reasons to tear everything down.

So just... yes. The original trilogy might have flaws, but also, it’s perfect. And do I want to rewatch it all now? Kinda.

(Anyway. I warned you this was gonna be long. Oh look, it’s long, and I’m sure there is even more I could say, but still. Ahem.)

Word of Honor eps 31-36 (final thoughts)

I know it’s been over for a while but I finally watched it all, with full context! and oh wow, it was a whole gay ride lmao My thoughts on each ep:

Ep 31: This ep was confusing. I still don't get how the ghosts and Scorpion got A-Xiang and CWN and how WKX rescued them and got everyone to agree to go save ZZS. On the bright side, this ep was totally WKX centered and I loved that. I will always be in awe of the way he can be this shameless, sweet and vulnerable flirt with ZZS but a dangerous Master of the ghosts, with such a murderous aura, with basically everyone else (excluding friends and family of course!)

Ep 32: WKX died and ZZS tried to jump after him but then he pulled the nails out, basically sentencing himself to death, quicker. Baddies think they're on top, especially Zhao Jing, but it’s just so obvious being full of himself makes him a complete fool and Scorpion knows his real intentions now. Disappointed at Chengling the first time I saw this, but I know he was in on the plan the whole time.

Ep 33: The look on ZZS's face when WKX appeared! The betrayal! The hurt! Confussion! He was like"bitch I removed the nails because of you! I basically killed myself cause I thought you were dead" so beautifully tragic. Also, WKX beating up Zhao Jing's ass was a joy to watch.

Ep 34: lolololol everyone knew the plan but ZZS and he was so sad for like half the ep but went "well, fuck it, I'm gonna die anyway, I don't have time to be angry". I'm sorry but WKX'S explanation of his plan was... Well, I didn't like it. The writing for this was a bit messy imo. Poor scorpion "I gave you a chance. in fact, I gave you many chances"😢 sir, you’re evil but I feel your pain. Oooff everything is about to go to shit. It's a wedding for fuck's sake! 😫

Ep 35: Everything, in fact, went to shit. Must you do your last battle on the day and place of a wedding??! I HATE IT HERE!!! My sweet A-Xiang 😭💔

Ep 36: How did WKX and ZZS became such liars with each other? They were really honest for a while. BUT I LOVED THAT THE HAIRPIN WAS A THE KEY ALL ALONG AND THAT HE GAVE IT TO ZZS. The romantic implications behind it leave me a fangirling mess. *swoons* Glad that ZZS was able to beat death in the end with the power of love lol

Get a room, you two! heh they were fighting to see who was gonna be top that night lmao

Aaaaand they did live gay and happily ever after! quite literally, because they’re immortal. Beautiful. It’s funny (in a dark way) that on Youku’s Youtube Channel version, the drama does end up tragically *flashbacks to Guardian’s ending and cries*. Tbh I would’ve been on board with that kind of ending, only because I had the happy ending from the novel to save me from heartbreak lol but let’s all remember that, despite the sad endings for some characters, OTP does have a happy ending in the drama.

The death of AXiang and CWN is honestly the thing I hate most about the story in both the drama and novel (and WKX’s tragic past), but I’d always think of it as a punishment for WKX pursuing vengeance, like saying, “you can’t have that and expect everything to go well”. Ouch. Priest you’re so rude but I still love you!

This drama honestly has a world of differences with the novel (I liked, loved and hated some lol) but, at the end of the day, the biggest difference for me was the way the romance was written and portrayed. It’s true that the ZZS from the drama was a very different character from the one in the novel. He was softer, kinder and had a higher tolerance for everyone, especially Chengling and WKX. He’s honorable in both versions but, how to say it? He was more rightheous, more conventionally hero-like in the drama. But of course, he lived and breathed Wen KeXing 24/7 and he loved him so much he jumped off a cliff after him. And when he couldn’t die together with his beloved, he did the most stupid thing he could think of to avenge him and to die faster and reuinite with him, ala Romeo and Juliet.

They had a more happy ending in the novel, but the drama made them desperately, hopelessly, in love with each other and I could never be mad about that. They made both characters have a lot more flaws, dilemmas and traumas, but that only showed how much they needed and completed each other. WoH really said “our theme is soulmates and we’re gonna ride it hard (lmao) and with full speed till the very end” and I humbly bow to that so *slow claps* well done, drama. Well done.

Note: If you like the drama but haven’t read the novel, I 100% recommend you to read the novel (here)! It’s GREAT. It’s quite different ngl: WKX isn’t as tortured(he truly is an evil mastermind) and ZZS is more like the serious bitch we met in the first 10 eps no softie ZZS in the novel oops BUT you have LOTS more of explicit and blatant flirting, you have actual kisses, makeouts and has one of those satisfactory endings that makes you go “OMG it ALL makes sense now”. And a HEA for OTP and their son, no immortality involved.

Ah- I created ehhh 4?? I suppose KaruShuu head-canons posts today but do I regret it? Absolutely not, I loved it. So here you go, have another one, don't be shy, read it.

Also, please keep in mind that these head-canons are completely made up by me in a way of that it's just how I would see it sksksk also here, KaruShuu would be probably adults?? Also married??

Who is the most affectionate? Sinceee they got married, I'm sure the longer into the relationship, the more they have opened up to each other? Karma would be the type to wake up first in the morning and kiss Shuu good morning, but since Shuu is an early bird, he would wake up before Karma and make breakfast for him. Thats how he shows affection ❤️🧡

Most common argument? Sad to think that they NeEd to argue 🙄💅 but oh well- I thinkkk they would argue over super silly things. For example what to watch (If you have read my previous head canons, you will know what I mean by 'Shrek Marathons'):

"Let's watch something"

"Sure, what do you have in mind?''

Karma would just grin over to Shuu and Shuus eyes would widen, "Hell no"

"Absolutely ye-"

"Karma don't you dAR-"

They ended up watching (again for the 12 time this week) Shrek.

Who apologizes first? Karma apologies fly out of his mouth faster than they stop arguing. Karma would rather apologize than not let them talk for the next few hours.

Favorite (non-sexual) activity to do together? They enjoy getting massage! Ifff KaruShuu was too lazy to go out to get a professional massage for a few hours, they would do it to each other. (It usually ends with them making out later on but I'll delete that part)

Who is most likely to carry the other? Karma would carry Shuu ❤️😩 Ugh bridal style to embarrass him 💀💅

Nicknames?

For Karma, by Shuu: Tamponhead (I used this one in my fanfic and I will forever love it), Moron, Karma. Tbh, I don't think neither like these pet-names or nicknames since that think they are 'cringy'.

Tho, Karma has quite a few: Shuu (Main, he doesn't use 'Gakushuu' but when he does, Shuu melts lol), Pumpkin, Orange, pumpkin pie, Strawberry shortcake (bc he loves strawberries so why not call Shuu one 😌🤚🏻), Sugar cube (Idk I think it's cute, tho I don't know if that's even a nickname- 💀💀)

Also a note: They would definitely not use 'baby', 'babe', 'honey' bc- noooo 😩💀

Who proposes? Karma 💅

Who sings along with the radio? Karma would sing along but he is horrible at singing and Shuu makes him KNOW it by him singing and Karma shuts up but finds it hilarious at the same time.

Who worries most? Both do, depending on the situation. Shuu would be worried about stuff like paying taxes or things like that, meanwhile Karma is worried for Shuus health, if he is eating enough as well as getting enough sleep every night. Shuu is a hardworking bee after all ✨

Who always wants to take selfies with the other? Karma wants to, for example they are traveling somewhere for vacation and Karma wants to take as many pics as possible with his husband so he can later on put them into an album ❤️😩 (KaruShuu as a married couple >>>>)

Who likes to playfully tease the other? Ohhh~ Karma teases Shuu all the time, but there are times where Shuu would feel playful so he would tease back

Who has the weirdest taste in their music? Karma I'm begging you- his music taste changes every week and road trips are a disaster for Shuu

Who remembers what the other one always orders at a restaurant? Karma remembers because Shuu is always ordering the same things since he is minimalistic lol but Karma is a living chaos when it comes to food so Shuu can't remember it all.

Who is embarrassed to take their clothes off in front of the other? Lmao no matter for how long they are already together, no matter if they are married, no matter how many times they had done it, Shuu would be the one to be embarrassed about it every time.

Who tops? ...Okay so here, personally as someone who writes Fanfics, Karma tops. Always. I just- I just can't imagine Shuu as a top?? my friends gave me some really valid reasons for Shuu to be a top but I just can't see it 😩

Who initiates kisses? Both I guess? But mostly Karma

Who reaches for the other's hand first? Oooo here an example! If they are driving in the car, and Karmas hand is free, Shuu usually reaches for it but as soon as Karma needs it to drive, he has to let go. Or if they are in the cinema - Shuu would definitely hold onto Karmas hand the whole time - as comfort, since they usually watch Horror movies together so yea 😌

Who kisses hardest? Who is most ticklish? Both is Karma, but when it comes to tickling, even tho Karma is more ticklish, he is also stronger than Shuu so he can easily pin him down and tickle him, just for the sake to see Shuu giggle which kills him bc God damnit isn't he adorable?

Who brings an animal they found home? Lol depends on the animal. I would say Karma is a cat person and Shuu is a dog person b u t Shuu is allergic to cats so they can't have cats. But I think if Karma would be the one to bring an animal home, it would be a dog.

Who holds the umbrella for the other when it's raining? Karma's shoe laces often get untangled, so when Karma bends to tie them, Shuu stands over him with an umbrella to keep the rain from pouring on him.

Who tries to playfully embarrass the other in public? Karma 😭

Who kills the scary bugs? Oh lemme tell you about this one:

Shuu HATES bugs, since he always had the feeling of his father having a bunch of centipedes around himself whenever he acted manipulative and so on so he hates them. So one time when Shuu was taking a shower, and Karma was in the kitchen, Shuu suddenly screeched so Karma went to check on him. He walked onto a Shuu, covering himself with a towel and looking absolutely T E R R I F I E D at the ceiling, stuttering. Karma was hella confused so he looked up and oop here we go, a spider. Karma obv took the spider off the ceiling to free it, but first he had to tease and scare his husband a little by walking towards the shower stall, "Shuu look~ He wants to be friends with you~", the way Shuu screamed at this made almost all of the windows in the apartment break.

Who asks the weird questions at random in the middle of the night? Karma does that on a daily basis, but when Shuu is a little bit drunk, he would ask weird questions to which Karma never has an answer but he jokes around.

Who hogs the blankets? Karma hogs them and Shuu ends up having a cold the next morning 😭

Who wakes up first? Shuu is an early bird, but Karma wakes up first for work.

Who wants to stay in bed just a bit longer? On weekends, they both stay in bed a bit longer to cuddle ❤️💕

Who always makes coffee for the other each morning? Karma makes coffee for Shuu before he leaves for work 🥰

Who cries during certain films or when reading sad books? Lmao Karma cries during Shrek every time the scene comes up where Shrek had an argument with Donkey 😔

Who gets scared during horror films? Shuu 😩�� He would (as said before) take Karmas hand for comfort

Who tells their friends/family about the relationship first? Lmao none since GakuHOE is well, a hoe so they won't trust him b u t I have the feeling of Karmas mom being actually super supportive?? But they wouldn't tell her, she would just get the hint and then when she receives the wedding invite she goes "oh-".

What do their friends/family think of the relationship? Rio was shipping this since the beginning of middle school aight, she loves it and she even threw a party for them. #IstanRioNakamura

Who is more likely to ask the other to dance with them? Karma would ask Shuu to dance obv but Shuu would go along 😩💕

Who cooks best? Karma! And Shuu loves his cooking! :D

Who wears the other's jacket? Shuu is the one to wear long coats, and Karma those thicc jackets. Shuu usually gets super cold even with the coat on, so Karma gives Shuu his jacket on top of the coat lol.

Who uses cheesy pickup lines? Karma- anywhere. Have an example:

"Hey Shuu, could you feel the shirt?", he asked Shuu while they went shopping and Karma wAsN't sure about his T-Shirt choice so Shuu was running his fingers slightly over Karmas chest with the shirt still on and thinking about the material, then Karma went: "Know what it's made of?", and Shuu looked at him and was about to answer him, but Karma was quicker and continued, "Boyfriend material", ObViOuSlY with a grin and Shuu was a gay blushing mess 💅 but then Shuu went along, "What do you mean boyfriend? I can only see Husband material", and tuRNED AWAYYYYY~

Who whispers inappropriate things in the other's ear during inappropriate times? AAAA I T H I N K I've written sum like this before- So two things that happened:

KaruShuu were invited to a funereal or sum and pls the church was quiet and stuff but obv Karma had to joke around and he leaned over to Shuus ear and whispered a joke into his ear which made our stubborn Shuu giggle and the church was this close👌 to throw them out lmao

Shuu was at work, and Karma likes to call him randomly, but oh well Shuu picks up and Karma starts to tease him over the phone maybe something very sexual stuff (knowing Karma he would) and Shuu just- he is sitting at his desk and his workers are giving him looks about why is he blushing so much.

Who makes the other laugh most? Karmas jokes always make Shuu laugh, sometimes even cry since they are hilarious.

Who would have to bail the other out of jail? Oh my God- Shuu would have to bail Karma out of jail maybe during college years, but I think Karma would mature a bit more as an adult

What would be their theme song? YOOO- A WHOLE PLAYLIST WOULD BE NEEDED-

Who would sing their child back to sleep? OOO!! Karma would be the type to read stories, but Shuu would sing them to sleep :D

What do they do when they're away from each other? I can imagine that they both have those business trips from time to time, so when they are apart, they FaceTime each other every evening to check on each other. Yes indeed they must stay at fancy hotels for their business trips and they are being served food, but they still check that the other one is eating and sleeping well. Oh and good morning and goodnight texts™️🥰

A headcanon about them that stabs your feels? Oh- oH GOD- That maybe they tend to act very distant at first in their relationships?? Or more cold? For example Shuu, he would not really know nor show much affection to Karma and Karma at first thinking that Shuu doesn't love him at all (which isn't true bc Shuu loves him deeply) but then he after some time figures it out when Shuu opens up to him more.

A headcanon that mends the previous one? That they both after some time spend together, have the opportunities to open up to each other, know each other better as well as find out each others weaknesses and strengths which makes their relationship stronger. I absolutely love them ❤️😩

legally i have to give you intern 2

em you have awoken an ungodly beast inside me so i need to warn everyone that this post is. incomprehensible. but so is mymusic so i guess we're all used to it.

How I feel about this character:

i watched mymusic as it was airing/running/coming out specifically bc i'm a jack stannie, and as a kid melvin was my second favorite character (w scene being in first, obvs) for mostly that reason. he basically hovered around this ranking until my most recent rewatch in the summer of 2020, which was actually spurred by some events in my personal life that vaguely reminded me of scene's season two arc w jeff, and i thought it'd been a funny/nostalgic way to get my mind off things.

(i want to side note here that -- i know you didn't ask, but -- i love jeff. i have since i was a kid. like, obviously not as a person but i think he's honestly the best written character in the series, w indie close in second. idk what it says about the f*nes that their most interesting and well rounded characters are the villains, but i digress. to this day i'm salty that jeff never got added to the theme song and wasn't really included in promotional merch.)

however, in said rewatch, certain things about how he was written started to really get under my skin, and certain moments in particular have really stuck out to me in a negative way. like, for the entirety of season one and a good chunk of season two he's one person, and then he leaves mymusic and we have an entirely different person, but not in a nuanced character building sort of way.

i've said a few of these points before but i'll repeat them here regardless. at the risk of sounding like i've put on a tin-foil hat, it's my sneaking suspicion that scindie was supposed to be endgame, but since fan reception to it was pretty neutral, and scenechart stans were, at the very least, more vocal, changes were made to the intended finale, which is why in the last scene he's basically just. indie. like, if everything about the show was exactly the same but indie was the one who had ended up w scene in the end that would have made so much more sense since a) scene had a crush on indie that he/everyone knew about and b) indie was kind of a dick despite the half-assed attempts at redemption, so both combined make it slightly less weird/out-of-nowhere that he kisses her w/o her consent (since, even though like. implied consent is not real at worst and a fuzzy subject at best but you could argue that scene would want indie to kiss her); and this isn't even taking into consideration that c) melvin is heavily queer-coded in both seasons, with his friendship with nerdcore being, dare i say, homoerotic at times, and his arc about leaving the company and changing his name mirroring nerdcore's almost perfectly (with nerdcore being a character who b*nny [at least] has all but confirmed is actually gay).

i've also been on the fence about melvin's behavior in that final scene making more sense for indie's character being an intentional decision as a way of shoe-horning in a theme about the lasting effects of abuse/cycles of abuse/the corruption of power but i also don't think the f*nes are smart enough for that. however, for the sake of defending my straw theory, i also point to the scene where indie comes to visit the acid factory after melvin told him to shut up, and we see melvin use reggie as a foot-stool, going as far as to say that it feels good to do so (which, in all honesty, i think is a bit that was entirely improvised, since the f*nes were "notorious for never saying cut" [paraphrased from a bts video], but work w me here). he's also given a seltzer mug that perfectly resembles indie's kombucha mug. in these moment melvin is directly emulating the behavior of his previous abuser, purposefully or not, literal moments after being promoted to an equal position of authority, which was totally just included as a joke, but could also be argued is meant to show that he's becoming indie; or, if we acknowledge that the f*nes have no fucking clue what they're doing and were just directing like chickens with their heads cut off, it at least shows that melvin's new position of power is leading him to understand where indie was coming from, which is supported by their conversation in the finale.

the following contains a couple brief mentions of irl sexual assault so if that's something you'd like to avoid skip to the next section!

HOWEVER, that alone isn't what i have a problem with, since i think melvin is completely justified in being a dick to indie (and also reggie enthusiastically consents to being used as an ottoman so good for him i guess). the issue comes completely in how he treats scene in the scenes where the f*nes clearly thought what they were writing was super romantic. like, the fact that the only thing he's got hung on his cubicle wall is a single picture of scene taken from the fucking opening credits (like. how hard would it have been to have. literally any other photo[s] esp since there's an abundance of cute bts pics of the cast in costume that could have been put there) and him scrolling through her twitter at work really creep me out (and at the risk of oversharing the weird, like, social media stalking angle really fucks w me bc that may or may not have been the exact fucking thing i was trying to escape in rewatching mymusic in the first place). also, having him sexually assault scene as a means of comforting her after she had just been sexually assaulted in the same way by someone else was... a choice (which is also, uh, personally familiar).

again, i recognize that demonizing melvin wasn't what the f*nes were trying to do here, and i perhaps seem hypocritical for opening liking jeff, but what makes jeff work is he's intentionally "the bad guy." having melvin do the same things as indie and jeff uncritically only proves further that the f*nes can't write for shit, and ruins his character which had, up until he quit mymusic, been unironically good. like, it's obviously not beneficial that the exact asshole things he does are personally triggering, but the character would still be a mess and i would still dislike him regardless.

i want to say though that jack delivers a surprisingly great performance despite how shoddily his character is constructed and how little experience he has as an actor. like, it's clear he was having a lot of fun on set and i would love to see him in something, like, good; i think he could pull off even like, guest television roles, which is a lot more than can be said for other youtubers.

nerdchart should have been canon i'm sorry. i know that close, nonromantic male friendships are valuable, esp between queer men, but also gd wouldn't it have been baller to have a canon interracial mlm ship. like. c'mon. and they could have been such a good friends to lovers story! we already got to see how melvin was the only person nerdcore could really be himself around so it would have been so cool if melvin's self-advocacy arc/flowchart arc had revolved more around nerdcore with a little role-reversal! and then they kiss! like god intended!

also i ship him and indie bc i'm a grubby little gremlin man ohoho. enemies w weird sexual tension? sign me up. not even enemies to lovers i'm not saying this one should have been canon i just love the vibes. do you think melvin and indie ever explored each other's bod-- *gunshot*

i wish him and scene had just been bros. god remember in season one when they were just bros that was the life.

alternatively, i wish we'd seen more bonding w him and metal, as a means of reconciling that. uh. moment from season one. along similar lines i would have loved to see him get closer w rayna in a similar way to how she bonded w nerdcore in season two. i think that could have also worked to show how she'd grown between the two seasons.

My unpopular opinion about this character:

HIM. AND. SCENE. SHOULD. HAVE. JUST. BEEN. BROS. (though i think my general dislike of him is pretty unpopular, lmao).

when the show was coming out i don't think it's unfair to say that scenechart/scenetern 2 was the most popular ship (aside from potentially techstep whatever) but luckily we're all gay and have better taste now. unfortunately i totally fell into this camp and scenechart was even my otp for years (until it was arguably more unfortunately usurped by reddie in 2019) and i didn't even realise that it's a hot mess until, again, the summer of 2020.

when actually watching the show the choices the f*nes made in regards to how the ship actually became canon are so odd and out of place, too? okay, so, on one hand everyone just shipped scenechart bc it was the whitest hettiest ship in the show (esp in season two when idol left) aside from scindie (and we already discussed what's wrong w that). but, on the other hand, lainey and jack clearly also just got along? and i suspect that lainey probably also admired jack's work and was happy to be working with him bc we have so many shots throughout even the first season when the ship wasn't the intended endgame of lainey scene looking really fondly at jack melvin at times when it doesn't make much sense at all, esp since she's smitten w indie? this trend continues into the second season which arguably works but it still seems really out of place for him to be the one to ultimately make the first move on her since it's clear she was the one crushing this whole time and also he's gay! this bitch is gay what the fuck!!

One thing I wish had happened with this character in canon:

at this point i'm struggling to think of anything i haven't covered yet. oops.

i've talked at length before about how he should have been a woman/lesbian, but the tl;dr is that it would have solved a lot of the queer-coding "problems" that just didn't get resolved in the show. if he'd been a lesbian then not only would the friendship w nerdcore still made sense, but scenechart would have as well (not even mentioning that both of scene's other relationships w men make a lot of sense as comphet anyway).

oops, I “saved this for the AM” and then completely forgot about it. my bad, sorry @ltleflrt!! And thank you for asking <3 The True Lies one is loosely based on a movie (with some twists), and is from (and for, if it ever gets written, lol) a lovely friend of mine aka @DCLovesDestiel who runs the NICEST Destiel group on FB (shoutout ~Destiel OTP~!!)

Cas is a secret agent named Dmitri Krushnic, and Dean is his nurse husband, who thinks Cas is just a tax accountant. Dean thinks Cas doesn't really want him anymore, but Cas is just super busy with a case. When Dean gets accidentally involved, chaos ensues!

Something, something... a dangerous toxin created in the research lab is meant for bio-warfare. Dean stumbles upon what it actually does when one of the creators is accidentally infected and comes to the ER for help. The creator is ready to flip and has already called the CIA. Dean’s patient gets murdered by Cas’ partner to keep him quiet and Dean walks in as it happens. Cas’ co-workers come to do “clean-up”. Their instructions are to take Dean out too, since he knows too much. They bring him somewhere to kill him and Cas walks in, since he’s the one assigned to do said clean-up (not knowing it’s Dean). Without hesitation, Cas shoots his team members instead and takes off with Dean, then they have to unravel the case together while the CIA is chasing them and the dude creating the toxin is trying to put his bio-warfare plan into motion.

I’m a little hesitant to write this one now, because the themes in it are VERY similar to @kitmistry‘s AMAZING fic, “Stumble and Fall” (https://archiveofourown.org/works/25481824), which I LOVEDDDDD. From the action to the romance, the pacing and the style is all just... *chef’s kiss*. Highly recommend if this kind of fic is something you like (or you just like good fics, lol). I just know my brain would subconsciously try to jack her skills, bahaha.

And the other one, Breakfast at Castiel’s, was for that Reddit-based prompt that was going around about the guy who keeps going to Waffle House, seemingly to pick a fight with the guy who is intentionally fucking up his eggs. My notes: Cook Castiel/Customer Dean Dean comes to the waffle house with Lisa regularly. Has some kind of emotional attachment to the WH/eggs from childhood or something. Cas overcooks his eggs by accident, then continues to do so, thinking he’s being funny, not realizing Dean is actually upset about it until Dean throws the eggs at him and calls him a douchebag.

Also a sassy asshole who is not socially aware enough to realize he’s pissing someone off with his jokes until there’s egg on his shirt... They fight.

Dean leaves but keeps coming back, and Castiel can’t decide what Dean’s deal is, so he starts thinking up new ways to fuck with Dean’s eggs and they keep getting into fights about it.

Cas is possibly aware of his customer's growing pissed-off-ness but gives no shits. Grouchy, smitey asshole whose philosophy is, “you will eat the eggs I cook you the way I cook them, and you will thank me for the privilege.”

Except the fights are getting… more and more intense. And maybe Cas slams Dean over a table at one point and Dean feels he’s hard? Cas runs off, Dean follows him out back.

They have angry sex by the dumpster, still yelling at each other about eggs as they get it on.

Dean's going to be like great, now every time I smell bacon I get an erection.

30 day otp - day Ten: Just in Case

10. J - Just in case. The otp+ has all their bases covered. Or at least they think they do…

oops, that got away from me a bit. Warning for some nsfw themes even if they don’t actually get to do anything because I suck as a writer /o/

It is so damn presumptuous of him to even think of buying that salve, as Nie Huaisang knows well. The apothecary, who caught him looking, told him that it was for intimate purposes, so he can’t even pretend that he doesn’t know.

It’s not what he’s here for. He came to buy some medicine, which he likes to do personally because the apothecary always has interesting stories and gossip to share, and doesn’t mind that Nie Huaisang asks too many questions about his wares. But while the old man went looking for the first part of his order, Nie Huaisang’s eyes started wandering as always, so the apothecary told him what that pretty little box contains, and now he can’t get it out of his mind.

Because the problem is that Lan Xichen will arrive to the Unclean Realm in two, maybe three days, and Nie Huaisang doesn’t know where they stand right now. After all, last time they saw each other, they…

His cheeks heat up just thinking of it.

Last time, Lan Xichen kissed him. And then they kissed each other. For a long, long time, until someone came looking for Lan Xichen to ask if he would be spending another night in Qinghe after all, even though he had said he’d be leaving that afternoon. That was when they’d realised that it was getting dark, and they’d been kissing for hours.

Nie Huaisang has desperately wanted Lan Xichen to stay longer. He wanted him to stay the night, he wanted him to stay for ever… but Lan Xichen had more important things to do than to make out like a teenager with the brother of his late best friend, so of course he had gone home. And they had exchanged letters since then, in which Lan Xichen assured Nie Huaisang of his affection, yes, but… but he had been writing that sort of thing even before the kissing. Damn, he’d been signing his rare letters to Nie Huaisang with affection even before Nie Mingjue died, so clearly it can't mean much.

Nie Huaisang sighs.

Everything is already so complicated. He misses his brother so much. It’s been a few months, but the pain of losing Nie Mingjue is still as vivid as it was on the first day. There are still mornings when he lays too long in his bed, body and mind heavy with the horrifying realisation that he’s alone, that he has to deal with so many things alone, and he’s not prepared for any of them. But, and that’s the really awful part, Nie Huaisang doesn’t even get to feel sorry for himself. His brother’s sect still needs to be run by someone, and he’s the only one left for that.

At least Lan Xichen had made things easier, up until that day. He showed up every few weeks, full of kindness and warmth and patience, helped Nie Huaisang deal with sect business, forced him to go to sleep at a decent hour, let him oversleep a tiny bit, gave him a chance to paint or play with his bird or do something else just for himself, and then he’d leave again. It was already more than Nie Huaisang would have ever dared to ask from the other man, and he was so grateful for it, but now…

Now Nie Huaisang doesn’t know where they stand. He hates that, and wishes Lan Xichen had never kissed him in the first place.

Hm.

So maybe that’s not true. Even Nie Huaisang can’t lie to himself convincingly about that. He is very happy that Lan Xichen kissed him. He’s dreamt of that since… since the Sunshot Campaign at the very least. He just wishes that they had talked about it before Lan Xichen left, so he knew whether this was a one time thing, or if Lan Xichen will want more of it, perhaps even to the point of…

And that damn pot of salve is there, taunting him.

It’s stupid, all they’ve done is kiss, and Lan Xichen has always been one to scrupulously follow his sect’s rule so he wouldn’t, they wouldn’t…

“Do you want me to add that to your order?” the apothecary asks, startling Nie Huaisang who hadn’t noticed he was back. “I’ve had a lot of compliments on it.”

It’s so stupid, and if Lan Xichen knew what sort of things Nie Huaisang is thinking about, he would never return to the Unclean Realm, nor talk to him again, and neither would Jin Guangyao.

But everyone who has called Nie Huaisang an idiot in the past must have been right.

He buys the salve.

Just in case Lan Xichen has another lapse in judgement.

Three days later, Lan Xichen arrives in the Unclean Realm. Nothing seems changed. He’s still kind and helpful, following Nie Huaisang to his office so they can work through everything that has happened since his last visit. Not a word is said about what happened during that visit, and Lan Xichen is so calm and collected that Nie Huaisang starts to wonder if maybe he just imagined all that kissing. With how little he sleeps sometimes, hallucinations wouldn’t be entirely out of the question.

It isn’t until they’re done working for the day and he walks Lan Xichen to his room (truly his: Nie Mingjue had one dedicated to his friend, which Nie Huaisang never changed) that a crack finally appears in the other man’s perfect composure.

“Do you want to come in?” Lan Xichen asks at the door, his voice wavering uncertainly.

They have worked for a few hours, and Nie Huaisang is a little exhausted, so it takes him a criminally long time to figure out why Lan Xichen would invite him into his room at such an hour. For a minute or two he just blinks tiredly, trying to think of a polite way to explain that he’d love to stay and chat, but he really should go sleep.

Then it hits him that the offer is probably not about chatting at all, and his entire face heats up in a second at the realisation.

“You want to…”

“Only if you do,” Lan Xichen quickly mumbles. “If you don’t… if it was just that time… I will not force expectations on you, of course.”

Nie Huaisang stares at him as if he’s gone crazy. As if between the two of them, Nie Huaisang is the one who would have any reasons for second thoughts.

Rather than to reply to such a stupid statement, Nie Huaisang steps closer and grabs the collar of Lan Xichen’s robes, rising on his toes to kiss the other man. He means to keep it short since he’s just trying to make a point, but Lan Xichen wraps his arms around his waist to pull him closer still and kisses him back with a passion that leaves Nie Huaisang light headed.

It takes impossible effort for them to actually get inside the room, because opening the door requires them to stop kissing, and neither of them is particularly willing to do that. They still manage though, if only to avoid being seen by servants or Nie disciples. Once inside the room, it only feels natural that they end up sitting on the bed, isn’t it? It’s the most comfortable place for two people to sit side by side, Nie Huaisang isn’t planning anything, it just happens.

It also just happens when Lan Xichen gets pushed on his back and pulls Nie Huaisang on top of him, the two of them clinging to each other as they continue kissing. Nie Huaisang doesn’t have any specific intentions, he just does what feels right, ready to stop the instant Lan Xichen tells him he’s crossing a line.

That instant never comes.

Lan Xichen happily lets himself be kissed, sighing when Nie Huaisang leaves his mouth to pay attention to his jaw, to his long and perfect neck, to that sliver of chest he manages to free from the billion layers of fabric that the Lans always wear. Nie Huaisang is so dedicated to that task that it takes him by surprise when he feels strong, slender legs wrapping around his hips, pulling him down against Lan Xichen’s body and he can feel…

He gasps, his eyes snapping toward Lan Xichen’s face, only to meet the other man’s burning gaze on him. His mind in a haze, Nie Huaisang adjusts their position so they are pressed against each other just right. Lan Xichen lets out a raspy breath at the sensation, his legs tightening slightly around Nie Huaisang’s hips.

Nie Huaisang kisses Lan Xichen again, letting instinct take over as he presses down on the body under him, his hips moving of their own accord. He can’t believe this is real, but there is no way he’d manage to imagine something this good. This is real, it’s happening, Lan Xichen is there under him, holding him, and...

He forgot the salve.

Nie Huaisang bought that thing, like an idiot, and now he left it in his room, like an even bigger idiot. He just didn’t want to act presumptuous, didn’t want to have expectations when he couldn’t know what Lan Xichen might want… well it’s obvious enough what he wants now, and Nie Huaisang is an idiot who messed up.

“We’d need… if you want this, we…”

“I want it,” Lan Xichen whispers, so earnest that Nie Huaisang almost moans just from hearing the words.

Even without salve, there’s plenty they can do. Nie Huaisang feels himself get harder just at the thought of Lan Xichen’s clever fingers wrapped around him, and he’d give anything for a chance to take the other man in his mouth. Or he could press himself between Lan Xichen’s thighs, that should be manageable without anything but spit to ease the way. The other thing can wait, it’s fine. Nie Huaisang will be grateful for anything that Lan Xichen lets him have. He’s about to say as much when the other man loosens his grip on him, making Nie Huaisang fear he changed his mind.

Instead, Lan Xichen fumbles with his sleeve for a moment before one trembling hand pulls out a small container. He hands it to Nie Huaisang, his face a beautiful scarlet and his eyes avoiding the younger man’s.

“I thought. I thought it would be best to be prepared for any eventuality.”

There are no words left in Nie Huaisang’s mind. He stares at the container, and feels his entire body burn with the realisation that Lan Xichen really wants him. Not just an impulse decision, not just a lapse in judgment. Zewu-Jun, the First Jade of Gusu Lan, the most attractive bachelor of their generation, wants him. Enough to be willing to break rules. Enough to prepare for the possibility of sex. Lan Xichen wants him.

Nie Huaisang wants to laugh, and he wants to cry. He settles instead for kissing Lan Xichen as if his life depends on it, amazed again to find his enthusiasm more than matched.

Lan Xichen wants him.

And Nie Huaisang is more than happy to let Lan Xichen have him then, in all the ways the other man might choose.

KYLO REN / BEN SOLO

To preface this, Kylo and Ben are inseparable in my mind; they’re the same person, so that’s what you get here.

Favorite thing about them: His intensity, his depth of feeling, his raw physicality. Young Ben/Kylo—either feared, coveted, or both by family and enemies alike—is only seen a vessel for the legacy of others, so he uses his body as a weapon... and it’s fucking beautiful. He’s a maelstrom of emotion: anger, hatred, guilt, pain, rage, shame, intense loneliness... then ultimately hope, love, selflessness, togetherness. Whatever he’s feeling, it’s manifested in his eyes, the way he fights, the way he reaches out or withdraws, the way he touches. His character shows that no matter how unloveable you feel, however past the point of no return you believe you are, you’re still worthy of love. You still have choices. You can still heal. You can still go home.

Oh, gawd. And I guess it would be off-brand if I didn’t say this...

Least favorite thing about them: Obviously, Ben/Kylo was party to plenty of horrible shit during his time with the Knights of Ren and the First Order. This is something that is “not chill,” but when you take into account Ben/Kylo’s backstory and trauma (TROKR illustrates this especially) AND the fact that he’s set up as the villain in an entirely fictional space opera featuring wizards with laser swords... it makes some sense. In short, trauma doesn’t absolve a person of the bad things they’ve done, and that’s never been the fucking point. A person’s trauma just provides context for how they behave/react and why, perhaps, they might not *really* have as much agency over their choices as one might imagine. My academic background is in cognitive/attentional neuroscience and functional neuroanatomy, and I could go the fuck OFF about trauma neuropsych, but I’ll spare both of us the rage typing today, anon. I also won’t take this opportunity to talk about machine of war and violent oppression being a real enemy in this story, or that Stormtroopers (*cough* *conscriptedchildsoldierscough*) conveniently wear de-humanizing masks so we don’t feel bad about the Good Guys blasting ‘em left and right. SO, my actual least favorite thing is that WE DON’T GET TO SEE THIS INCREDIBLY EMOTIONALLY RESONANT CHARACTER LIVE AS HIS FULLY-INTEGRATED SELF AND NAVIGATE A POST-WAR GALAXY WITH PEOPLE WHO LOVE HIM. *sobs angrily*

Favorite line: “You’re not alone.” and “Let the past die. Kill it if you have to.” OH! And “WHaT GiRL???!!!” heheheh.

brOTP: Kylo & Hux. The SNARK! These two are such great bitchy frenemies.

Additionally, I would sell a kidney to see how redeemed Ben interacts with the pals back at the Resistance. My HC is that Rose & Ben would be fast friends... especially because she bit Hux.

OTP: Reylo, yo. DIS IS A BOI WHO CANONICALLY HAS A SOULMATE. From their very first interaction in TFA, the connection between Rey and Kylo/Ben is so magnetic, and the way their volatility and fearful curiosity evolves into intimacy and inseparability is just DELECTABLE, unfff.

nOTP: With Finn’s aversion to all things FO and because there aren’t scenes where Finn x Kylo have direct dialogue, I have a hard time imagining their dynamic in an intimate way—but as always, I 100% support fellow SW shippers. There’s some really beautiful fan art for this pairing!

Random headcanon: Through it all, Chewbacca has never stopped seeing Ben as family—but there’s no way Ben could expect that with his mother and father both gone. When he and Rey land at the Resistance base and he unfolds himself from the cockpit of Red 5, he’s sure the loud growl and flash of brown fur mean Chewie’s about to rip his arms outta their sockets, and he thinks he deserves it. He only has time to flinch before he realizes Chewie has scooped him up into a hug, stroking his black hair and purring happily. At 6’3”, the former Supreme Leader is not used to having his feet dangling off the ground, but at this moment—he couldn’t be happier.

Unpopular opinion: I remain a gleeful VillainFucker™️ and heartily appreciate a good DFP characterization of Villain!Kylo in canon-divergent fanfiction, but let’s get real—THAT AIN’T THE REAL BEN SOLO/KYLO REN, Y’ALL. Additionally, you can pry canon Reylo from my cold, dead hands... but I’m also way into DarkPilot AUs (especially Padawan!Ben x Young!Poe growing up in the Resistance) and a lil’ bit of Kylux here and there. These are all totally separate things for me and I can enjoy them individually; it’s cool if that’s not the case for you!

How long have you been watching 1? since November 21, 2017 - the day it came out, and I became immediately obsessed.

How did you get into 3? god, I don’t even remember. odds are I saw some gifs on Tumblr and decided to give it a try.

Favorite actor in 4? it’s funny because his character is my least favorite in the show, but Tom Hopper (he plays Luther). he’s honestly such a sweetheart, and he had minor roles in Merlin and Game of Thrones which are also favorites of mine, so I just can’t not love him, y’know?

Which do you prefer? 1, 2 or 5? oof. I’m gonna say Runaways just because my biggest OTP at the moment is from there, but honestly, I love all 3 shows an illegal amount.

Which show have you seen more of, 1 or 3? Brooklyn has 7 seasons and is still going while Runaways was cancelled after 3, so I’m gonna say b99 just for that reason, even though I watched both shows multiple times.

If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? look, they’re all pretty fucked up, and I have enough issues of my own, thank you very much. but I mean... if you wanted to give me 5′s powers I wouldn’t be mad about it, as long as I don’t turn into a 50 year old in a 14 year old body.

Would a crossover of 3 and 4 work? after the Hargreaves accidentally caused the apocalypse, Five uses his powers to take them all back in time to try to prevent it, but they go haywire once again, and all 7 siblings end up in an alternate universe’s New York City, where they meet the detectives of the 99th precinct. the 99 try to help them get back home, but end up teaching them about love and family instead. It probably wouldn’t make for very good TV, but I’d read the hell out of that fic.

Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple? Nico/Gert, or Karolina/Gert

Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5? they’re so completely different it’s almost impossible to compare, but I’m gonna go with b99 just because it’s season 7 and they haven’t let me down yet, while the Witcher could very easily end up a disappointment.

Which has better theme music, 2 or 4? The Umbrella Academy doesn’t have a theme music so it’s Jessica Jones by default, but it’s okay because it’s just about my favorite theme music ever, tied only with Daredevil and Doctor Who. tua’s soundtrack fucking BOPS though.

Do you have a list of your tvd ships anywhere? (I LOVE your klaulena and fte's tylena and stebekah \o/)

OH NO I thought I had responded to this already!!! This is what I get for multi-tasking TOO! MUCH!

I don’t have a list, but that sounds like a brilliant idea, so how about I make one right here right now?

Stelena and Delena – I put these together because my feelings on them are so interwoven– I’m unashamedly all about this love triangle– way back when season 1 was airing, I was a huge delena shipper, but then at some point in season 2 I realized that I was ALSO really invested in stelena… and the thing is, even though I really wanted delena to happen… I didn’t want to lose stelena. I was always a little disappointed that the show dropped stelena so hard once delena happened. Like, my feeling on it is I like these ships best when they are in conflict with each other. Not sure I really ship this as an ot3, although I’ve read some truly phenomenal fic for that and there is a lot about Stefan and Damon’s relationship to be parsed out by the potential for them all 3 to find some balance with each other, but I definitely definitely am here for these 2 ships in a really big way. Like, FE wasn’t supposed to be a stelena fic at all, and I only realized once I really got into writing it that it just was. Elena’s love for these two is just so incredibly intrinsic to who she is.

Klena/Klaulena – (why didn’t we ever settle on a ship name???) If you’re reading this, you probably already know this is my OTP. Maybe my OTP of OTPs, since it’s continued to interest and inspire my writing for like 8 years now. Just. How to even put all of this in a short paragraph. There’s something really fascinating to me about how they both play into each other’s psyches as these larger than life forces– Klaus for Elena is like this descending doom, this inevitability, this force of nature she can’t stop, or even run from, she just has to stand and face it, and the pressure that puts on her is really how she learns who she really is, and what she is really willing to do. I think Elena found out so much of who she is when her soul is scraped down to the very bottom from Klaus’s bearing down on her. She learned she was a force of nature herself. And for Klaus, Elena is this idea he’s been fixating on for a millennium. Because don’t tell me he wasn’t still fixated on her even after he thought there would be no more Petrovas. Because he totally was. And I think she excites but also frightens him– I mean, she’s got the face of his dead beloved, and there’s got to be something faintly unnatural and therefore unnerving about her. But also, there are great themes about fate– that they had this written in the stars kind of destiny, that was dark and terrifying and brutal, that they fulfilled together (I’ve always felt like there would be this subconscious part of Elena that would have yearned to fulfill her part, even though it was totally messed up and she died doing it)– and there is fantastic imagery– fire, water, how much better does it get? – and their chemistry is INSANE. Like, I think I jumped on board this ship a month before Joseph Morgan even stepped on camera, but by the end of the season I’d tossed out everything else I was doing and that was that. UGH and their power dynamics? Wild. You don’t get quality content like this every day, people! I could write a thesis about this ship.

Rebekah/Stefan – the ship I wish had sailed much more prominently than it ever did. I was really really really into this, and fascinated by the idea that Stefan could have his memories be restored and be in love with someone else, for real, and I was super interested in the drama and just emotional turmoil that would have stirred up. I was always disappointed by the show kind of brushing stebekah under the rug– I really felt like this is the great love story we never got.

Rebekah/Elena – the ship with all! the! potential! don’t even get me started. I really really really enjoy how they have both the capacity to be incredibly sympathetic to each other, and actually seem to really like each other and get along well… except that ELENA is the one who can’t help but backstab (literally) and Rebekah, who always lashes out in the worst possible way, responds by like… trying to light Elena on fire. It just has always intrigued me that Elena, the human, is the one who behaves more monstrously, when you would expect it to be Rebekah. I just am really super interested in their dynamic, which is both kind of sad and also really hot, and wish (again!) that we’d gotten something here. I have a few Becklena fics that I pray will someday see the light of day.

Elejah – how could I forget this gem? my original doppelganger x original ship. I think I fell in love with this ship around the time we got that great deal getting brokered in Elena’s bedroom. DEFINITELY by the time she daggered him in The Dinner Party. There was always a sense of menace and top tier creep just simmering below the surface, that appealed to my horror-romance loving heart.

Katherine/Elena – this one is kind of weird because I don’t quite ship it romantically– more like, I think there is a TON of interesting stuff to unpack about both of the doppelgangers that can be gleaned from shipping them, and a lot of imagery with mirrors and reflections and things getting warped as fuck that I really really really adore. It’s probably feels too narcissistic to me to ship them romantically, since I really think they are the same girl nature-wise with very different upbringings resulting in their apparent personality differences… but like, I do still ship them as an idea, and of course, sexually, with each other. Idk this is almost more like a character study/idea ship than an “I want them to be in love” ship.

Marcel/Elena – oops I might have invented this but what’s done is done

Tyler/Elena – this was always supposed to be part of FE, but I think I actually convinced myself of this ship while writing FE, like, the more I thought about it the more sure of it I was. Tyler’s always been one of my absolute favorites– swear to God he sometimes feels like my viewer insert because he says the stuff I’m thinking ALL the time– and I have this headcanon that he’s super misunderstood, but someone like Elena, who’s known him her whole life, knows the real Tyler, and sees past all of that– and likewise, Tyler can see through Elena’s smoke mirrors, which are AMPLE. There’s just so much potential for tenderness and sincerity and he saved her at the end of season 3 because of course he did, of course Tyler would jump in like that for her, she’s Elena Gilbert, he’s known her his whole life.

Almost all of these are Elena-centric, which… is just sort of how I operate.

I do low-key ship these though:

Team Forwood– ah, the good old days. I really felt like this ship got shunted for Caroline’s other big ship, but c’est la vie.

Jeremy/Tyler – two misunderstood boys angsting over line art also the chemistry

Katherine/Damon/Stefan – umm Memory Lane is my favorite episode it is what it is

Rebekah/Klaus and Klaus/Stefan and Klaus/Rebekah/Stefan – I don’t even headcanon this I’ll straight out tell you that all of these things are canon – have you seen the promo image for season 3? Klaus is clearly the interloper in the established love triangle, whispering in Stefan’s ear/seducing him – I don’t really think these ship configurations can be untangled from each other though, at least not in canon

Imelda shouts.-Imelda Rivera (b. 1899 - d. 1969), a story that includes but is not limited to: the finest music school this side of the Santo Domingo, three traveling musicians and the mess they made of love, the twice-cursed assassination of Venustiano Carranza, all the patron saints, and ninety-six ways a man can try to cross a bridge. (A masterpiece of character, world-building, development, just everything you could possibly want from a fic and a novel, it is a grand epic that is personal in scope, truly spectacular)

Good Omens

A Stone’s Throw from Jerusalem by RC_McLachlan (Aziraphale/Crowley, 2k): "Are you honestly going to make me listen to bebop in my final moments?” [Absolutely beautiful with just the right amount of aching heartbreak and pining, and this acute awareness that they live on different scales than humans.]

damn.nation, now available on itunes by anistar_e (10k): When lowly tempt-pusher Amphora (formerly of Stairwell 7B North, before she Fell,) gets the notice that end times are nigh, she gleefully quits her job and cancels her Netflix subscription and takes her place among the legions of hell. // This, it turns out, was a bad plan. [The character work is so strong, she paints such a clear vision of Amphora and it’s very easy to fall in love with her. This is the best example of outsider POV of OTP that I’ve seen.]

Salinity (And Other Measurements of Brackish Water) by drawlight (Aziraphale/Crowley, 3k): It's an odd thing, getting on after the End of the World. Crowley takes to sea-watching. [This fic reads like poetry, it’s absolutely beautiful with a very good central metaphor. Also Crowley cooking.]

stars, hide your fires by fishycorvid (Aziraphale/Crowley, 3k): He can feel the pull of the riptide, even in water like this, only a few centimeters deep. The constant, assured call of the ocean: you came from me, and, one day, you will come back. Crowley smiles to himself at that, the water rushing insistently against his fingertips. He hadn’t come from the sea, of course. But he doesn’t think he’d mind much if he had. / “Crowley.” / He goes still at the sound, eyes falling closed. [Beautiful missing scene, I love the emotions and the imagery and the descriptions of the Pacific Northwest and how this fic is just them.]

vintage demon art, vape pens, & other treasures by kyrilu (Aziraphale/Crowley, 1k): Love, Anthony J. Crowley is aware, is a very foolish thing. He’s seen humans do stupid things based on love or lust, whether it’s tacky Disney movie themed weddings, internet catfishing, or matching couple shirts. [I love this, it’s formatted as several short vignettes about the pair and how Crowley very much doesn’t feel love - except he does, he loves an angel. It’s delightful and beautiful and poignant.]

Lucifer

And There Was Light by ariaadagio (Lucifer/Chloe, 143k): When Lucifer Morningstar is found half dead in the desert, Chloe Decker is determined to find out why. The problem is ... not even Lucifer knows the answer. As Chloe's world is flipped upside down by incontrovertible evidence of the divine, Lucifer grapples with feelings of violation and futility. God's meddling has started a chain reaction, but to what end? Deckerstar. Fits with canon through S2. [I love this beautiful masterpiece of a fic. Excellent characterization, spectacular plotting, and a very delicious slow-burn, this fic deals with Chloe finding out Lucifer’s divinity while Lucifer deals with fate and free will and having his wings again.]

Marvel (Misc)

Adjectives Assemble by SugarFey (26k): Natasha wants to find that rare edition of The Master and Margarita before her rival at the Russian language bookstore does. Kate is distracted by the cute barista next door. Carol and Jessica dance around each other. Maria just wants to keep her business afloat without being bothered by pesky police officers or high school art teachers, no matter how polite they may be. Another average day at Adjectives Assemble. [Multiple ships and POVs, lots of awesome ladies dealing with feelings and trying to save an indie bookstore, it’s just a delightful fic to read.]

in oakland by hupsoonheng (Sam/Erik, 11k): in the summer of 1998, the good reverend wilson is shot dead, and darlene wilson runs away from her grief all the way to oakland, california, taking her oldest with her. sam hates her, he hates oakland, and he definitely hates the pretty-eyed neighbor boy who's been volunteered to show him around. it's up to him to make the most of his new situation, but he might need someone to push him. [Not a pairing I ever expected to read, but it’s handled so well, the development of their friendship and then love over the course of a single summer in Oakland as teenagers, like cinematic magic, I couldn’t help but cheer for them.]

Morning Glory by capsicleonyourleft (Tony/Steve, Carol/Jess, 2k): There are a great many things Tony loves about Steve Rogers. His propensity for getting up at the asscrack of dawn, however, is definitely not on that particular list. [Domestic fluff with cute moments, good characterization, and character dynamics that nail them.]

One of the Basic Skills of Civilization (Eddie/Symbiote, 1k): Eddie attempts to civilize the Venom symbiote. [Eddie tries to teach Venom manners by way of Miss Manners. Things don’t go as planned. It’s hilarious and sweet and has a great joke about Amazon]

we were emergencies by gyzym (Clint/Natasha, 37k): It's not about being unmade; it's about remaking, one aching step at a time. [This fic is a classic in the fandom and it’s truly stunning. The way it handles trauma and trust and love is phenomenal, you learn to live with it but it never goes away, and it’s truly the best Clintasha fic.]

She-Ra

plays well with others by Cosanova (Adora/Catra, 4k): Catra may have left the Horde, but that doesn't mean she's ready to join the Rebellion. [Did someone ask for awkward villain redemption? I love this fic and the way Catra navigates the people of Brightmoon and figuring out her feelings for Adora.]

Steven Universe

I Want to Understand by CoreyWW (gen with Steven/Connie and Amethyst/Peridot, 59k): After stopping the Cluster, Peridot must face her next challenge: adjusting to life on her new planet and learning about humans that populate it. Knowing just how out of depth Peridot is, Steven enlists Connie's help in getting Peridot used to humans and acclimated to Beach City. Considering Peridot has no social skills whatsoever, this goes about as well as you'd expect. Funny episodic "Peridot in Beach City" adventures about how Peridot changes over time. Diverges from canon after The Answer (Though by coincidence, the premise of story basically makes this "Log Date 7 15 2: The Series") [What makes this fic so good is the characterization and dialogue. It’s very accurate and the chapters themselves feel like they could be from the show. I especially love the development of Connie and Peridot’s friendship, in addition to Peridot’s own growth and self-reflection.]

Favor for Your Four-Chambered Heart by anistar_e (Jasper/Lapis, 77k): "I don't get it," she says flatly. / "Don't get what?" / "You said we needed to be in peak physical form. What for?" / "Oh!" Peridot perks up. "For harvesting." [Never Let Me Go AU.] [Jaspis isn’t a pairing I considered reading for until I came across this fic and it blew me away with how good it was. This fic hurts, the themes of freedom and self-determination in a world where your only purpose is supposed to be to die for others are beautifully handled, and I love the way all the relationships are written, dynamic and complex and messy. People make mistakes but they’re allowed to grow and become better, and it’s really just so good.]

Set Me Free by cym70 (Lapis/Peridot, 23k): Being roommates gives Lapis and Peridot a lot of time to get to know each other and, despite their rocky history, they might just be able to make something entirely new. [A gorgeous, in-character fic about Lapis healing and falling in love with Peridot. The dialogue is so good, you could really hear their voices, and I love the careful development of their relationship. My favorite Lapidot fic.]
