Hairstyle Meme: Olga Cortes
I had seen this floating around and especially liked @aheathen-conceivably and @stargazingsims‘ versions, so I decided to dress a younger Olga up in lots of different hair styles and (not period accurate) outfits. I still haven’t nailed exactly how I think she would dress in the present day, but her favorite colors of blue/teal and yellow create a calming palette for her and a balance between the practical and the romantic.
What’s your favorite look?

The thing about Kristoph is... He has a bizarre sense of entitlement. He's delusional, His breakdown at the end makes me think he doesn't even understand he's in the wrong,
He think's he's in the right and he think's he's owed things, so when he thinks he's been slighted, he does shitty thing because he thinks he can get away with it, he doesn't need to, but he thinks he's right so he does it anyway
As such, I imagine Krissy actually falling for Nick at some point during their confusing 7 years
Why? Cause he like Phoenix's attention and affection (Kris is definetly a man who didn't get enough love as a kid) and he thinks he deserves his love and attention.
Who cares if he majorly screwed over Nick and got him disbarred? He likes his affection so he should have it. Nick is hot and Kristoph is Gay so he shall posses him.
But notably, I can imagine Kristoph actually being hurt by the fact that Phoenix exposed him. He's delusional and entitled, how dare Phoenix do this to him after everything.
"How dare he not get over what I did to him and make me face the conseqences of my actions?!"
You feel me?
oh my god i see it. especially bc i do also hc that he felt very betrayed and offended by phoenix exposing him! he thought he knew Phoenix better than that and he has to realise he was wrong, maybe the seven years of companionship wasnt enough to fool the turnabout terror. he either underestimated phoenix's dedication to the truth or he thought he had broken phoenix down enough that phoenix would let kristoph frame olga without question.
personally my interpretation is a bit different when it comes to kris's feelings tho- i like to hc that kristoph would never even admit to himself that hes in love with phoenix. he rationalises all his feelings away bc if he lets those butterflies in his stomach reach his heart it might just kill him.
He feels posessive of Phoenix and wants to monopolise his time, but he tells himself its because he needs to keep an eye on him, keep him in check. any time phoenix smiles warmly at him it makes his heart race but he tells himself it's just excitement that phoenix is falling into his trap nothing more.
deep down he knows he's in love, of course he does, he's a smart man. but he also knows that the greatest expression of that love would be to come clean, and he cant be doing that, that would make Phoenix leave his life, leave him. so he decides to keep phoenix close by forcing him to remain dependent on kristoph's generosity, a selfish kind of love that's borne from paranoia and desparation.
he definitely does have a sense of entitlement tho. those 7 years of him paying for trucy's school trips and maining a friendship and intimacy with phoenix held a lot of value to him, and he has a hard time reconciling that with how seemly-quickly phoenix threw it all away. because he's selfish, spoiled, entitled, and in love.

What was Vera Gedroitz like? I have heard that she was “mean” or have heard her been talked about in a negative way, but honestly she is someone to look up to. A openly gay nurse, like that’s someone that I would look up too. Did the girls like her? Did the little pair even get to know her because she wasn’t at their infirmary? Thanks bestie! 🤍
Hi! Thank you so much for the question - sorry for the delay! I do love talking about Vera, so here we go...
Vera's personality
Vera was known to be gruff and commanding. Unfortunately, little is written directly about Vera's personality, as much of the primary sources focusses on her "unusualness" instead: her way of dressing (always masculine clothing), speaking in a low, gruff voice gravelled by years of cigarette smoke, and her relative openness about her sexuality. However, there was a warmer, more romantic side to Vera. She wrote poetry, sought the companionship of literary circles, and turned the grief of losing her brother during childhood into a truly revolutionary medical career. She could be brusque and private, possessing a no-nonsense attitude, but also incredibly compassionate and kind. She spent the last years of her life running a pharmacy with her wife, giving medicine and medical aid to the poor completely for free.
Was she liked by OTMA?
We can infer that she was, indeed, liked by OTMA, or at least by Nicholas and Alexandra. As a doctor to the royal household (who was specifically requested by Alexandra) she would have been held in high esteem. It is believed that Vera was also an occasional doctor to the imperial children: Nicholas and Alexandra's tendency to dismiss staff which they saw as behaving immorally, or being difficult in some way (especially when it came to those caring for their children) implies that they had warm feelings towards Vera due to her continued employment.
In fact, fellow nurse Valentina Chebotareva's diaries are very revealing of this relationship: when Anna Vyrubova was struck by a train, she noted in her diary that the Tsar "spoke for a long time" with Vera, entrusting her with Anna's care. She also wrote in 1917 that "I talked to Vera Ignatievna about the past. How close the Empress had been to her at the beginning of the war", implying that their relationship did decrease as Rasputin's influence monopolised. Vera had no time for Rasputin - one quite famous anecdote describes him standing in her way and Vera physically pushing him into a corridor to be rid of him lol. Despite this strain on her relationship with the Romanovs, and her activity in revolutionary groups during her youth, Vera remained fond of the family. She had, after all, taught Alexandra, Olga, and Tatiana personally during their nursing training. When the abdication was announced, Valentina wrote that Vera "sobbed like a helpless child."
It is from Tatiana's diaries where we learn the most about the sister's relationship with Vera. Ever detail-oriented, Tatiana's diaries are a beautiful patchwork of notes and observations about her patients and fellow workers. Interestingly, in her 1914 diary, Tatiana usually refers to Vera as "The Princess", reference to her royal title, rather than by her name in line with the doctor/tutor role that she had with the Grand Duchesses. This later changes to her first name and patronymic.
Monday 8 September 1914: "...Had tea with Papa and Mama, then the princess came over."
Wednesday 24 September 1914: "...From there to the infirmary with the princess... Had a lesson. The Princess was here."
Thursday 25 September 1914: "Had a lesson in the morning. At 11 o’clock again, like yesterday, we picked up the princess and went to the infirmary."
Letter from Tatiana to Nicholas II, 19 November 1914: "They took out a tiny fragment from Gogoberidze’s leg, but it was so small that the Princess was looking for it for almost a half hour and finally found it with difficulty. It was about this big “O,” no bigger."
Letter from Tatiana to Vera Cheborateva, 14 April 1917: "And where do Rita, ... and Vera Ign. live now?"
Letter from Tatiana to Vera Cheborateva, 8 January 1917: "We heard what Vera Ignatievna has turned into, and how she is walking around. How fast people change— it is even funny!"
Letter from Tatiana to Rita Khitrovo, 23 January 1918: "[The Baron] also wrote to me and said that he saw Vera Ignatievna at the infirmary. She is [wearing] epaulets, large boots with spurs, did not even ask the Baron how he was doing. So shameful. I did not expect how fast she would change. Although lately she had been very strange."
It is interesting here that Tatiana remarks about Vera's clothing - many photographs show that Vera had always dressed in the masculine style around the infirmary (suits, long coats, even masculine medical outfits), including in the presence of the Romanov family, so this would not have been a new or unusual phenomenon for the Grand Duchesses. Vera even sent this photograph of herself to Olga in 1915 - wearing a masculine style! She was not subtle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(That's one happy patient!) ... From these photos and documents you can clearly see that Alexandra, Olga, and Tatiana were very happy working alongside Vera who clearly more traditionally masculine clothing - I've pointed out Vera for ease of identification.
Perhaps Tatiana was pointing out this social irregularity in light of what she saw as a betrayal: I think it's very important to highlight the difference in their diaries before and after the Revolution. Vera stayed in the capital for a brief time, and could not openly support the Romanov family without compromising her work as a doctor. Eventually, she joined the 6th Siberian Rifle Regiment (which was still technically considered imperial) in order to provide surgery on the front lines which simultaneously escaping the capital. Valentina Chebatoreva's diaries make it very clear that Vera did not keep up correspondence with and/or show support for the Romanovs as it would have compromised her medical work: "Vera Ignatievna finds that it is impossible to answer each one [letter] so as not to give the impression of a "party"." I'm of the opinion that Tatiana's souring opinion towards Vera came from her mistaking Vera's self-preservation of herself and her work through not showing active support or maintaining correspondence to have been a betrayal.
Vera's whole life was medicine: she emigrated to Russia to study medicine, she became the first Russian woman doctor, she served in the Russo-Japanese War, First World War, and Revolutionary conflicts, she found her life partner Maria Dmitrievna through medicine, and even in retirement worked tirelessly to deliver healthcare and treatment to those less fortunate than her. It appears to Vera that, in order to continue to save lives, correspondence with the Romanovs was too much of a risk.
Did the little pair know her?
This is a great question! Off the top of my head, I can't recall any direct references to Vera in their diaries. Unlike Olga and Tatiana's diaries, the little pair's letters and diaries aren't available to read and search online, so I'm having to rely on my memory of reading those books unlike the ability to digitally search the big pair's for any mentions of Vera.
If we look through their albums however, we can see multiple photographs of Maria and Anastasia visiting Olga and Tatiana's infirmary and being photographed with the staff: including Vera. There are also photographs of Olga and Tatiana with Vera in the little pair's albums, implying that they took the photos. They may not have known her as well as Olga and Tatiana, but considering their visits to the big pair's hospital and Vera's visits to the palace, she was definitely an acquaintance.
Tumblr media
To conclude: Vera definitely wasn't to everyone's taste, especially those who preferred the image of a conservative, reserved woman. She was authoritative and determined - brilliant qualities for a doctor, though not encouraged within noble women. The Romanovs, during their friendship with her, truly appear to not have cared about her sexuality of her preference for masculine fashion (there are some gender historians who would have a much more nuanced take on this) - it was only after the Revolution, and her perceived turning against them, that these qualities were problematised. Vera was different, brilliantly so. She fought for what she wanted, what she needed. And, despite the definite constraints of the time, she was free.
I hope this answered your questions! I'm always happy to talk about Vera :)

On November 30, the Russian Supreme Court ruled to ban the “international LGBT movement” in response to a lawsuit from the Justice Ministry. While the decision has yet to come into force, it’s already had significant effects for LGBTQ+ people in Russia. Meduza sums up the fallout from the ruling in its first five days.
On the night of December 1, Russian law enforcement officers raided multiple nightclubs that were hosting events for LGBTQ+ people in Moscow. The Telegram channel Sota reported that police showed up at three clubs in the city.
“In the middle of the party, the music stopped and [police] started coming into the rooms. There were also people from other countries at the party. At the exit, they took pictures of people’s passports without permission,” a person who was at one of the clubs told the Telegram channel Ostrorozhno, Moskva. At another club that was reportedly raided, the pop star Olga Buzova was scheduled to perform but canceled the concert at the last minute.
Raids were also reported at saunas in the city. “It all went down like a regular drug raid. No violations were found but the atmosphere was ruined,” said one eyewitness, adding that police officers made patrons lie face down.
The popular St. Petersburg gay club Central Station announced Friday that it’s closing. “Dear friends, unfortunately, the venue that we’ve been renting has refused to work with us any longer due to the law. We apologize, but we’re no longer working. Until we meet again!” read the club’s announcement on social media. The message didn’t specify which law it was referring to, but it appears to mean the Russian Supreme Court’s November 30 decision to ban the “LGBT movement.” According to the outlet Fontanka, Central Station was one of the oldest gay clubs operating in the city.
The dating app Pure has removed the option for Russian users to indicate their sexual orientation when registering. According to the Telegram channel Ostorozhno, Novosti, users from Russia can now only specify their height, weight, and language, while users from all other countries can choose from a list of sexual orientations.
The human rights project DELO, which provided legal assistance to LGBTQ+ people in Russia, announced that it’s dissolving “due to outside circumstances.” The group’s statement said that all of the ongoing cases with which it’s been assisting will be transferred to “trustworthy lawyers” and are “guaranteed to be seen through to completion.”
On the Yandex-owned movie database Kinopoisk, an 18+ symbol has appeared next to the cartoon series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. It’s unclear what prompted the label. The Telegram channel Sota speculated that it could be a response to the fact that the name of one of the show’s main characters is Rainbow Dash.
Lawyers from the human rights group Department One have said the Supreme Court’s “LGBT movement” ban will officially come into force on January 10, 2024.

oswald cobblepot (the penguin) hcs
DONT TELL ME IM WRONG IM RIGHT /lh
I'm leaning towards asexual penguin but I feel like aceflux would also work. if you don't know what aceflux is, it just means your sexual attraction fluctuates on the asexual spectrum
ik most iterations of penguin involve him actually liking birds, even being RAISED by penguins but i feel for gotham penguin, he probably wouldn't like to get birds. sure, he uses the name penguin but only because he found power and intimidation in using it but it's still connected to his trauma of being made fun of.
he's unlabeled cause 1. robin has stated that there's no confirmation that oswald is specifically gay. he's just not straight. 2. is because it makes sense for his character not to rlly give thought to his sexuality or to put a name on it, however i do think he only likes men just isn't labeled. if someone were to ask him his sexuality, he'd whip around and go "that's not of your concern!" and storm off or something pfft
he gets sick often, especially during his umbrella boy days. like imagine standing in the rain but you have to give your umbrella to fish mooney of all people because its what you get paid for. he'd get sick often cause of the cold murky weather of gotham. he's also unhygienic, at least in the start of gotham and constantly shouts so he'd probably get sick rlly often and has sore throat. cuts back to his mom always helping him with her tea and how he has a raspy voice!!
when ed switches over to riddler all oswald does is "ed ed ed ed come back baby im sorry"
him being domestic can range from childish innocent things like singing songs to each other and having picnics to tracking down people to kill <3
probably only got a dog cause he wanted loyalty and a dog is known for being loyal. hes seems more like a cat person to me
learns asl for martin, (and teaches him it if he doesn't already know how). oswald will literally ONLY shut up for martin, he won't speak when he's signing or when martin is (ed is kinda different but THIS ISNT ABOUT HIM *proceeds to write mostly riddlebird hcs*)
oswald buys martin antique toys and lame stuff, like jack in the boxes. ed buys him extremely hard puzzles and 'educational toys'. uncle zsasz buys him music-related things, headphones, radios, etc. barbara buys him more of what a kid would want, like an xbox. (ik this isnt just oswald but idc)
actually back on the cat person oswald, im going to state how cats are attracted to HIM. he probably tried to pet a cat when he was a kid and got scratched and sobbed to gertrude. he'll immediately become upset when a cat doesnt like him but he'll eventually learn how to gain a cat's trust and suddenly theres six following him around, he teaches them to bring dead animals to his enemies.
he treats his maids and house employees extremely well. like olga was the one to like oswald and not ed. why?? because he pays her good!
sadly probably mistakes olga as his mom, he catches himself right when "mother" slips out of his mouth, he feels embarrassed and ashamed, he doesn't get mad at olga but he excuses himself and runs to his room. olga doesnt get angry, she just feels bad :(
oswald walks into gcpd. everyone stops what they're doing and are like "oh no", he just skips over to lucius and props his umbrella on his desk and is like. "make this into a gun or else." with two of his henchmen behind him. hes not even scared that hes surrounded by police PFFT
in MY gotham, oswald is still very close with ivy and other people like mr freeze and firefly.
he realizes how bad he was to them, apologizes and promises to be a better friend. everyone is skeptical besides ivy cuz she's naive but turns out he's not lying. he gets upset when ivy messes up or whatever but quickly apologizes and calms himself down, he learns to value his friends and their quirks as they have for him
oswald is autistic and has bpd, along with apd, maybe ptsd?
he usually gets driven around by others but he owns his own car which is a hearse. yes, coffin car.
doesn't know about ed's hallucinations but finds his pills and was like ???
he dropped out of school probably when he was a teen and when he did have school, i'd like to think that he had straight A's.
not only did he get bullied a lot but oswald is smart. it's only a matter of time before he snaps, so i imagine he'd put his smarts to use and would start a business where he'd write people's essays and tutor them for tests (explains why he wasn't surprised when ed asked for oz to mentor him)
gertrude would have boyfriends when oswald was younger, but oswald being the clingy mama's boy he is, didn't like them. he'd put bugs in their pillows and coffee, and other fucked up shit to scare them off. eventually, they'd break up with gertrude and yell at her about how fucked up her kid is. gertrude would get rlly upset and explains how her little oswald could do no wrong. after a while, getrude would stop dating entirely, much to oswald's approval.
his favorite holiday is christmas and thanksgiving
does not speak of either mothers day or fathers day
will disappear off the face of the earth on those days
hates the cold strangely, it reminds him of when he almost drowned, multiple times. he always has multiple layers on so when you see without all that or a suit in general its very 'woah'
he hates when people touch him, especially those who he does not trust. like did you see when sofia touched him that one time, EW. or when he first met ed, "you're standing too close", could be that he could strike at any moment but he also just doesnt like strangers
speaking of his touch aversion, oswald wouldn't trust ed to touch him after he, yknow tried to kill him. in s5, when oswald jumped to save ed was probably when he got over it and as we know they later hug (non-homosexually 😊)
ed is like the only one who can mention his mom (ofc in a good way) without oswald bursting out in tears or attacking them. partially because of their shared history, when ed nursed oswald back to health he used his mother's memory to gain his trust more.
when people insult him, depending on who you are he'll either dissociate or attack you. he's probably learnt to do that from when he was bullied as a kid
speaks rlly fondly of fish after her death, ppl would be like "but didnt she try to kill you?" "idk what you're talking about"
doesnt kiss ed unless ed goes in for the kiss first, hes afraid of somehow being rejected again, and also cause he's aceflux he doesn't crave a kiss like some ppl do but he does forehead kiss martin all the time. hes the parent who will drive martin in his limousine and be like 'wheres my hug 🥺🥺' before he gets out of the car to go to school
ok me needs to sleep hope this was enough to satisfy the penguin stans

When Queen Olga of Württemberg was going to marry her husband, there were many rumors about her husband being gay. How did his father, Tsar Nicholas I, and his older brother, Alexander II, allow this situation? Did not having children upset his family? For example, he expressed his sadness in the letter he wrote to his brother Alexander III's wife, Maria Feodorovna, because Elizabeth Feodorovna and Sergei Alexanderovich did not have children. Do you know a letter or a saying about this for Queen Olga??
Hi! I don’t know much about rumors at the time of the engagement/wedding ( @sbiizv might be able to help you there, though). Olga certainly didn’t write about it in her memoir, haha. By the time Karl of Wurttemberg came into the picture, Nicholas I was desperate to marry Olga off—she was 24 years old already and had had several potential matches that had fallen through, and she was also flirting with a man of unsuitable rank. He was also keen to have her make a dynastic marriage, as her sisters had both married fairly minor princes, and pickings were slim at this point, so he had to take what he could get, so to speak. The Romanovs were connected to the Wurttembergs, as Nicholas I’s mother was born a Duchess of Wurttemberg, and his sister, Grand Ekaterina Pavlovna, had been the second wife of Karl’s father, so I suppose it was an attractive potential marriage from that perspective as well. I don’t know how Olga or Karl’s family felt about their being childless, but I do believe it caused Olga herself some pain. Later, she and Karl formally adopted Olga’s “problem child” niece, Grand Duchess Vera Konstantinovna, and Olga loved her as her own.

Did you use to be a fan of Ashlyn or did you never like her? I used to love the Ateam vibe they had going on but now I have to find a new gay powercouple to follow. Any recommendations?? Queer family’s make me so happy and I just never see them because I live in a small town :(
I was a fan of Ashlyn! I liked Ali more just because I felt like I connected with her better especially soccer wise and her journey and stuff. I supported Ashlyn though and respected her work ethic and drive and how she fought through so much adversity through all her injuries and stuff. Unfortunately now it seems like that real Ashlyn I followed years ago no longer exists.
I’m sorry you don’t see queer couples in your town :/ I had that same issue until I moved to a big city. I don’t follow many queer couples at the moment but there’s on couple that posts cute YouTube videos that I have enjoyed
YouTube link: https://youtube.com/@Kristen_McKenzie?feature=shared
Also this was a recommendation from my friend! @juststaroracle — mapi and Ingrid (post a lot) or Alexia and Olga (kinda give krashlyn circa 2018 vibes), or Irene Paredes and her partner (they have gorgeous kids too!)

I wanted to be involved :(

hi :) 3, 12, 14, 25 for the book ask?
Hi!
3. What were your top five books of the year?
There isn't an obvious answer - my first instinct was to say Moby-Dick, which I read in 2021…
I spent most of the year following up on my interest in "workplace novels," or "labor fiction" (which emerged when I started looking for a job - incidentally, while reading Moby-Dick, possibly one of the first workplace novels?), and I enjoyed all novels I read as a result: Zola's Germinal, The Dragon's Village, Olga Ravn's Employees… The novel that stands out from these is Bibiana Candia's Azucre: una epopeya (which I read in Polish, but as far as I can tell it has not been translated into English). It is an experimental novella about the Spanish men 'hired' by Urbano Feijóo Sotomayor to replace the more expensive slaves on Cuban plantations. The designation as 'epic' helps to make sense of this - the novella recreates the experience of the workers, but also the cattle they work with, the objects… Like an epic, it is interested in a communal experience, but it writes it from the bottom up.
I obviously enjoyed Esther Yi's Y/N, but it might be the recency bias.
Another book that made a strong impression was Ronald Syme's Roman Revolution, a 580 pages long account of the collapse of the late Roman republic which I read over the summer. Syme finished it in 1939, with the rise of fascism in Italy as the obvious point of reference. The combination of the eloquence typical of early twentieth-century scholarship with barely restrained fury made it a very compelling read. It's not the best introduction to the period, as Syme assumes a passing familiarity with various figures, offices, and events, that I simply did not have, but the book has been, and remains extremely influential, which is why I chose to read this rather than anything else. I still catch myself thinking about it when watching the news sometimes - it is very clear about the consequences of creating states of exception in politics.
12. - just answered!
14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
I am not sure that I will finish anything within the next couple of days - I am in the middle of several books. Mostly, I am listening to the audiobook of James Frankie Thomas's Idlewild, which so far has been a novel about an intense queer friendship at a New York private school in the immediate wake of 9/11. A part of what it does is answer the question of why so many teenage girls* become obsessed with gay* men. It's unpleasantly real about all this; Thomas knows really well how to make the readers cringe. (The reader for the audiobook is very good, too).
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
I have a list of fiction books I want to read this academic year, but I am not sure whether I will be able to stick to it. A specific goal I have and want to keep is to read more contemporary poetry, which I started doing late this year. I am now surrounded by people who care about it more than I do, so I want to know what is it that they are talking about. I would say that rather than be interested in all of recent poetry, I have been drawn to works that seek to capture a community's experience of a specific historical moment - essentially, more formally experimental historical fiction. I got M. NourbeSe Philip's Zong! and Don Mee Choi's DMZ Colony and Hardly War from the university library, so hopefully I will be able to read them in a not too distant future...

This was a big year for me both for quantity (nearly twice as many books as i read last year) but also for quality. So many standouts! And I'm learning I'm very here for experimental literature, please send me your weirdo recos.
Where the hell has Helen Dewitt been all my life? How are so few of her books published?! (she claims to have a dozen ready to go and i need all of them).
Chuck Klosterman has really grown up since I last paid attention to him like 15 years ago. But What if We're Wrong? changed the way I look at the world. He looks at the present day from 1000 years in the future and comtemplates what we could be completely wrong about based on what we've been wrong about in the past. Some of the interviews I've listened to of his this year have really opened my mind to new ways of thinking. Will be doubling back on what I've missed from him in years past in 2023.
Fuccboi was a blast and all the literture snobs that hated it are just completely fucking wrong.
I found Human Wishes Enemy Combatant through a newsletter or something. How lucky we are that this was released again! Read if you want to experience someone completely destroying the structure of a novel.
Milkman is gorgeous. Read immediately.
Gentleman Overboard is another that was nearly lost to time and recently published again. A beautiful and haunting little story.
Read Faggots for a very fun and raunchy romp through the gay sex scene of the late 70s moments before the AIDs crisis. You won't be able to keep track of all the characters, but it doesn't really matter.
How Red Notice hasn't been made into a movie by Adam McKay is beyond me. Maybe it's coming. A great window into Russia's transition after the Soviet Union and also the mindset of modern Russians. Also lots of fascinating stock, money stuff.
Read Arriving Today and This is How they Tell Me the World Ends (about the supply chain and hacking/internet security respectively.) for a peak into our modern lives told by very good story tellers in ways that are far from boring.
I could go on and on about Fleishman is in Trouble (and have in person to so many). The story of two women trojan horsed through the tale of one very mid man. The series on Hulu is also good and an incredibly accurate representation of the book.
Status and Culture! I'm still reeling from this book. Marx is so direct when looking at how and why we like the things we like it almost makes you uncomfortable. i don't think i have ever underlined, astricked, exclamation pointed so much in the margins of a book.
The Golden Spur, They, Bliss Montage, Astragal, How Should A Person Be?, Laserwriter ii, Night Boat to Tangier, Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead are all well worth reading also. Honestly, I was blown away by almost everything i read this year minus two big exceptions.
I hated The Buried Giant. Read it for a book club. I'm not a fantasy girl. I get what he was trying to do with the language, but i couldn't get into it, it felt like a bad translation. Which is really saying something for a book written in English. If he called her Princess one more time, I can't.
1Q84 I really wanted to love, (my first Murakami, somehow.). I really liked the first section, but it just didn't add up for me in the end and there were so many loose ends for such a long book.
I have found so many of the books that i loved this year on the podcast Backlisted. Two British guys have on two guests to discuss an old, out of print, or a newer book that isn't as popular. They are charming, it's very nerdy. But they have incredible taste and i put at least 5 books into my Thriftbooks cart during every episode. n+1 also did a fundraiser quiz that gives you 10 book recos. i was very excited about all of them and most of them i'd never heard of. Haven't read any yet, but many are sitting in the same shopping cart. Just checked and they aren't doing it anymore, but look for it next year!

FUN FACT OF DINH!!! She misses her culture, so she would murder live animals in front of the residents:
Nguyen Thi Dinh came in with two chickens and 1 lbs. of meat to make a special dish cause she misses it. The resident watches in horror as they are forced to try it. Zenobia is in the closet to hide as MC and Sebastian watches in blatant horror. Olga and Y Lan is comforting the residents as they watch. I will borrow some OC to make it more comedic. Brb-
Dinh: once you plucked the feather of the chickens, you will chop- [a loud clef knife slammed down the dead chicken neck, with blood gushing out onto the bowl]
Mozart: [watches in horror as he blinks, about to puke at the vivid scene. Hey that rhymes!]
Dinh: while you make sure both chicken blood are in the bowl, you will prepare the meat~! [quickly did it to the other chicken, the prepared the meat]
Y Lan: *holding Salai as he moved his head to puke*
Mc: …
Olga: *sighs* the horrid scene is finished Charles.
Charles: I feel sick..merde…
Wellington: *dead as his face loses all blood*
Dinh: now~! While the meat is cooking, we pour the fresh blood onto the meat~! [giddy]
Michelangelo: mom, I’m scared. Pick me up!!!! *gripping onto Raphael who is already fainted *
Leonardo: I-…*covers his mouth as he watches, needs a cig RIGHT NOW*
Ileana: it’s alright Alexei..it be over…I hope…
Anna Boleyn and Zenobia is in the closet as we speak to hide from it……
Wu Zetian: *blinks, but doesn’t really care…* can we add rouge to it?
Y Lan: ZETIAN!
Wu Zetian: Shima?! *what= shima*
Isaac: …I take a apple over this…
Dazai: *just smiling even though screaming inside*
Jean: *pale as he also blinked in blatant horror*
Faust: *nowhere to be seen, he left once nobody notice to go puke*
Theo: [has his eyes covered onto Vincent shoulder]
Vincent: [comforting Vincent as he watches the scene trying to reassure himself]
Dinh: then~ you stir it~! Add some cilantro and pepper…!
Napoleon: [in Wellington lap as he closes his eye in gay horror]
Alexander 1 is nowhere to be found…he also left the chat to be with Faust…
Dinh: now~! We EAT!!!
Gilles: merde..I’m gonna puke—! *rushes out quickly*
Arthur: *arthur.exe. Has stopped*
Sir Worth: [shudders at the meal before him]
Olga R.: it’s almost over Maria..almost…
Tatiana: *had to accompany Anastasia to the toiletry so lifted the chat*
After everyone regained their stomachs sickness, they all were forced to try by eating it. Dinh was never allowed to do it again. If your wondering what I mean by the dish? Here it is~!

The Romanov sisters described by Queen Marie of Romania:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I liked the girls, they were natural, gay, pleasant and quite confidential with me when their mother was not present; when she was there they always seemed to be watching her every expression so as to be sure to act according to her desires. I studied each of them in turns."
"Olga was not pretty, her face was too broad, her cheek-bones too high, but I liked her open, somewhat brusque way."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Tatiana was taller and more handsome, but also more reserved. It is said that she was most like her mother in character and that there was a special understanding between them."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Marie was shorter and plumper ; she had very fine eyes and a pleasant expression, but a too broad mouth somewhat marred an otherwise pleasing face."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I was not much attracted to Anastasia, she had no particular sort of face, and I do not know why, but I would have said that she was rather shy and watchful. But this may have been only an impression. I was never with them long enough really to know them intimately."
