Sorry, the Cullens Are Not the Best Vampire Family
These vamps are in a league of their own. (Baseball pun intended.)
Collider Sept 24, 2023
Deborah Harkness, author of A Discovery of Witches, was inspired to write the series after seeing the popularity of paranormal romance novels and wondering why these creatures still captivate us.
 The de Clermont vampire family in A Discovery of Witches is more complex and intriguing than the Cullen family in Twilight, offering a fresh and intimate perspective on vampire dynamics.
 Ysabeau and Philippe, initially distrustful of their vampire son Matthew's witch partner Diana, eventually gain respect and even affection for her, showcasing the power of love and acceptance within the family.
On the surface, it might seem as though A Discovery of Witches draws heavily from the human-vampire romances that preceded it. That assessment's only half-true. Deborah Harkness, author of the New York Times bestselling All Souls trilogy upon which A Discovery of Witches is based, didn't read any vampire literature before penning her novels. But her creativity was sparked in 2008 after seeing the sheer wealth of paranormal romances adorning bookshelves. "It seemed to me much bigger than what had happened with Anne Rice," Harkness explained to The Los Angeles Times in 2011. "As a historian of science, […] I thought, Why do these creatures still exert such a pull on us?" Furthermore, Harkness "[ wondered] if there really are witches and vampires, what do they do for a living?" Her resulting All Souls trilogy is a delightful enterprise and not a copy of Twilight, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, or any popular supernatural saga. In the paranormal romance world, certain story beats naturally tread similar ground. Harkness, a decorated historian, scholar, and university professor, weaves the forbidden love story of historian witch Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont (Matthew GoodE) together with magic, philosophy, metaphor, and detailed historical accuracy. That convergence makes for a fascinatingly fresh perspective on the genre while never losing sight of its romantic heart. With that said, there's a specific unintentional similarity A Discovery of Witches shares with Twilight — that awkward feeling when your in-laws are vampires. The Cullens of Twilight might welcome you into the fold with a baseball game, but A Discovery of Witches has the better vampire family by a home run mile. Sorry, not sorry.

The Story So Far
Tumblr media
Alisha swallowed hard as nobody moved for several seconds. Baldwin and Marcus had been interrupted mid-fight and the rest of the gathered creatures stood in reflex to the vampire brawl about to blow through the room.
“Becca,” Miyako grabbed her cousin’s arm, pulling her back, and putting herself between the bright-born and, potentially, her father.
Understanding what was possibly about to happen, Alisha joined Miyako in front of Rebecca.
Baldwin released Marcus and carefully regarded the three women.
“I see you returned my wife, safely, thank you Miyako,” Baldwin’s voice dripped with sarcasm, “I’m sure she simply got lost when this witch abducted her from the safety of her home.”
“You know she didn’t kidnap me,” Alisha answered back, causing both Miyako and Marcus to regard her with wide eyed fear, the latter even shaking his head in the hope to discourage her from provoking him.
“You know who I am,” Rebecca spoke up, drawing Baldwin’s ire from his wife and his daughter.
“I’ve known both who you are and where you have been for the last two weeks.”
“You let us think our friend was lost and in danger for all that time?” Nathaniel fumed.
“It was for their safety, the decision had nothing to do with you.”
“Stop this,” Ysabeau interjected calmly, regarding Rebecca with a flash of warm familiarity that Baldwin luckily did not see.
“That magic, I know it,” Sarah shook her head in confusion.
“You called her Rebecca.” Emily addressed Miyako.
“And Montclair called her a witch.” Sarah agreed.
“A witch and a vampire,” Marcus added, “with Matthew’s blood.”
“Papa,“ Miyako started carefully.
“Stop talking,” he warned and fixed his gaze upon Marcus.
“Take Madame de Clermont to our rooms, do whatever checks you need to do to ensure she is well.”
Marcus took a breath to argue but the look on Baldwin’s face was one he knew well.
Disagreement would not be productive.
“I’m fine,” Alisha argued, “and I’m staying with Rebecca and Miyako.”
“Miyako, escort our guest to my office,” Baldwin continued, ignoring Alisha’s protest, “I suggest the smaller reception room for your gathering Ysabeau, this one is much too draughty for warmbloods.”
“Wait-“ Sarah started but was led away by Em and followed behind by Nathaniel.
“Alisha, please,” Marcus held out his hand to gesture she lead the way and follow Baldwin’s directions.
Annoyed but with Baldwin, not Marcus, and not wishing him trouble, she relented and led Marcus and Phoebe to the turret.
Ysabeau glanced at her granddaughter then to Baldwin when the others had left.
“You know who she is?” He challenged.
“She has my blood, of course I know who she is.”
Baldwin sighed deeply crossing his arms and leant against the table.
Ysabeau recognised the exasperated, exhausted look as one frequently displayed upon his father when the strain of holding everything together became apparent.
She knew why he was struggling but would never say it as it would not be constructive.
He needed Matthew.
Alone, he was one half of the equation, the rod. Matthew was the carrot, Philippe had told her so himself, only together could they make things work.
Now, she believed for the first time that even Philippe failed to foresee the effect both of their mates would have on this equation.
“I will speak with her and Miyako, then, if you wish, you may converse with her.”
“What about Marcus and her aunts?”
“Of course Marcus can, but there is no way I’m telling my sisters about this.”
“Nor would I but I meant Diana’s aunts.”
“This is a family matter, the witches aren’t family.”
“They’re her family!” She told him firmly but carefully.
“Very well,” he grumbled and stood.
Ysabeau smiled and gave him a kiss on the cheek, leaving before he could process the caring gesture and before she could see the almost imperceptible quirk of a smile.
“Here,” Phoebe handed Alisha a glass of water from a nearby carafe, “drink this, you’re white as a sheet.”
Alisha noted her giving a concerned look to Marcus, in the process of him checking her pulse and blood pressure.
“Thank you,” Alisha took the glass gratefully, “Phoebe.”
“Vitals are fine and since I value my life I won’t ask what got you so afraid.”
“I’m not…” she trailed off as she saw Marcus regard her with doubt, “it’s best for both of us if you don’t.” Alisha agreed quietly.
“You’re concerned your husband would harm you?” Phoebe prompted.
“Phoebe,” Marcus warned.
“I know vampires have their rules, Marcus, but I won’t just sit back and let that…fucking brute abuse her.”
“Baldwin has never harmed me, and he wouldn’t,” Alisha assured her warmly, “but if I were ever in that situation I’d want a friend like you.”
“We’ll be family soon,” Phoebe corrected reaching out a comforting hand towards her shoulder, stopped only by Marcus catching her wrist firmly but gently.
“She’s been gone for two weeks, any new scent near her could set him off.”
“Your sister is a new scent.”
“No, she’s not, I can’t explain it but she seems to have my grandfather’s blood as well.”
“I thought vampires couldn’t have children biologically.”
“There’s a lot we’re still learning but it has happened before.”
Marcus looked questioning at Alisha.
“I can’t, anything I might say could change how things are supposed to play out. Only Rebecca knows what’s safe to tell. I hope you understand.”
He nodded with reluctance.
Gallowglass hadn’t answered his call when Baldwin sought to tell him about the appearance of the trio.
It was not like him but Baldwin hadn’t the time to ponder before Gallowglass called him back.
“Something happened,” Gallowglass started as soon as Baldwin accepted his call, “I followed them to Venice but they’re just gone-“
“Stop, Gallowglass,” he sighed, “they’re here, they’re safe! And you didn’t answer when I called you!”
“I was busy. How did they get there?”
“You told me about the witch, seems she inherited her mother’s abilities.”
Gallowglass heaved a deep sigh of relief and chuckled.
“I should have known that wee pissant Benjamin wouldn’t have gotten the best of Miya.”
“Benjamin,” Baldwin fumed, “Fuchs, Matthew’s fuckup that keeps on giving was near my wife and my daughter?”
“According to Domenico, who’s still alive but barely. His children are looking after him.”
“Leave now, go to the airport, my plane will be waiting for you!”
“I’m not afraid of Benjamin, or that decrepit old pope Gerbert.”
“Gerbert is working with Fuchs?”
“Aye, but I can handle it!”
“If Gerbert and Fuchs are working together it’s not safe, they probably killed Peter.”
“I’ve seen off more Christians in my time than you have, Uncle, I can handle this one.”
“I’m not arguing with you, come home!”
“You know France has never been my home, not after-“
“I know, I shouldn’t have said that. You’re right, France may not be home but we are, I expect you here by the morning.”
There was an audibly furious silence on the other end of the line.
“Yes Sieur.” Gallowglass hung up.
Baldwin sighed with relief.
Even in death, Hugh would never forgive him if he let anything happen to Gallowglass on his watch.
Shaking the thought off, he strode towards the office where his daughter and the witch awaited him.
“Is everything alright?” Rebecca prompted.
“Of course,“ he took his seat opposite them, “so just how far ahead in the future are you, exactly?”
“Eighteen years.” Rebecca answered.
She knew her uncle, he could be kind, affectionate and generous with his time but she also knew of his impatience when information was critical.
He nodded solemnly.
“I suppose I already got two thousand years, I probably shouldn’t lament a shortness of time.”
“There are things we cannot tell you about the future-“ Miyako started.
“And yet I know if I was there I’d never have let this happen.”
“Father-“
“Does this future include Benjamin Fuchs?”
Miyako and Rebecca glanced at one another, shocked.
“Gallowglass was following you, at my behest but he lost the trail when you appeared here.”
“Is he alright, did Fuchs attack him?” Miyako asked.
“He’s fine, apparently Domenico was forthcoming with his version of events.”
“He’s alive?” Rebecca asked hopefully.
“He’ll live,” Baldwin regarded her curiously, “Gallowglass will be back soon but in the meantime, you’re going to tell me why you sought out Domenico.”
“Father, your rules, as you said-“
“I am aware of what I said, but I am also aware that you already changed things by removing Catarina from her time!”
“You know-“ Rebecca started.
“No, I suspected,” he answered sharply “now I know!”
“We saved her to prevent something worse happening in the future,” Rebecca admitted, “we didn’t know then that she was your mate and our intention was not to reunite you. Obviously fate intervened.”
“I suppose Michael was someone from your time you could trust?”
“One thing changed since he won’t be there now.” Rebecca confirmed.
“Anything else drastically different?”
“Knox, he shouldn’t be dead yet.”
“But there’s not too big a jump.” Miyako countered.
“Keep going!” Baldwin warned and noted Rebecca’s anxious expression.
“Emily,” she admitted, “Knox was killed because he killed her first.”
“I’m sorry Papa, I know I’m not your Miyako-“
“Stop talking,” he warned her, “you tried to act the same and your effort was commendable, cbut I know when my daughter is behaving strangely.”
“I wasn’t behaving strangely.” Miyako frowned, offended by the insinuation her cover wasn’t sufficient.
“I can count on one hand how often you called me Papa before you visited for the wedding, I estimate you came to this time just after I sent you to Seoul?”
“Yes.” She said in quiet defeat.
“Never tell me you are not my daughter because in anywhere at anytime, you will always be my Miyako. Is that understood?”
“Yes,” she paused, “Papa.”
He smiled warmly and turned to Rebecca.
“Gallowglass couldn’t tell me much more than what you shared when you first arrived.”
“And I knew you would understand the danger of messing with the timeline, as Grandad did when Mum and Dad visited him.”
“Messing with the timeline,” he huffed, “you have done a lot of that already. Does my wife know, who she was?”
“There’s knowing and there’s remembering. She knows she was Catarina but doesn’t remember being her.”
“Alright, what doesn’t she know that I have to?”
“Something happens in the future that forced us to go back to fix things. Because it’s related to future events, we can’t tell you.” Miyako explained.
“We got Catarina to make this video before the spell, insurance policy.” Rebecca placed a memory stick on his table.
“She agreed to you taking her memory?”
“Suppressed. She wanted a complete wipe, to protect you and what she knew about our family. I convinced her to do it this way instead.”
“She’s started remembering her ability to understand written and spoken language.”
“Michael’s elixir,” Miyako agreed, “he had it created so that if anything happened to him, she would remember who she is. It wasn’t part of our deal.”
“So she’ll gradually remember?”
“In time.”
“Is she a threat to herself or to others?” He asked pointedly.
“No.” Rebecca assured
“Absolutely not.” Miyako echoed her cousin’s sentiment.
“Very well,” he confirmed, feeling slightly more assured, “I would encourage you both to remain here although I suppose I cannot prevent your leaving, given your talents.”
“As the head of this family and with my father absent I ask for sanctuary, Sieur.”
“Granted. I suppose you will enjoy spending time with your Grandmother, brother and cousin, when he shows up.”
“And you?”
“Me, what about me?”
“If you have time I was hoping you’d take me on a hunt. I am half vampire.”
“Matthew actually allows you to hunt?”
“No, he didn’t teach me.”
He raised an eyebrow but didn’t question her further.
“Marcus can supply you with bagged blood tonight, first thing tomorrow all three of us will go on a hunt. I’m curious to see my training at work.”
Alisha stood upon hearing the door open.
Baldwin entered with an expression she couldn’t read easily. He wasn’t angry but nor was he contrite.
That was fine, neither was she.
“Marcus assured me you are well.” He said simply, shrugging himself out of his jacket.
“I was safe with Miyako and Rebecca, of course I’m well.”
Baldwin was turned away from her when she heard the cuff-links drop into a bowl on the table.
“And yet,” he turned back to her, “mistake or no, they almost served you up to a sadistic little cretin”
She didn’t say anything, unsure as to what she was permitted to reveal.
“That wasn’t their their fault.”
“You’re right,” he stalked closer, “it was yours.”

What do you think Baldwin’s reaction would be to someone (Nora, maybe?) giving him flowers or a gift?
Tumblr media
He’d be stunned at first. Not used to actually get anything.
But Nora is insistent, standing there with her arm stretched out with the gift or bouquet in hand.
«What’s this my love?» He’d ask, moving closer to her to look.
«A gift. Happy birthday love.» The smile on her lips so soft he couldn’t help but lean in for a small kiss.
«It’s not my birthday—»
«I know that—but no one knows when it is, so I’ve designated it for today.»
A laugh left him, more surprised than anything. «Nora—»
«Happy birthday Lucius.»
Baldwin wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her in for a hug, a soft «Thank you» leaving his lips.
The date became an annual day of celebration, the twins and Arielle especially loving that they had a day to celebrate him.

"Ugggghhh!" you yelled, throwing your hands up and leaning back in your chair dramatically.
Baldwin watched you in silence, eyes narrowing as he sensed your blood pressure rising.
But you were already leaning forward again, typing away incessantly. It wasn't until you angrily pushed your laptop away that he finally came over to you.
"Why don't you take a break, darling?" he asked gently.
You didn't even look at him, just snatched your laptop again, sliding it back over to yourself. "I don't have time. Deadlines."
Baldwin held in his sigh. "You're off work until the new year. You finally have time to be home and relaxing. But instead you're pissing yourself off with work."
You whipped around to glare at him and hated that he didn't even flinch. "I have exactly ten days off--ten days in which to get this writing done without my other job draining me!" You huffed, "now, if you're only going to distract me, you can go sit in the other room."
He stood there as you continued typing, then backspacing the last line you wrote, then letting out a frustrated curse.
"You're in my space," you grunted, looking for any reason your muse had disappeared.
But instead of being upset, Baldwin just leaned over your shoulder and closed your laptop.
"My work!" you yelled, reaching to open it back up, but he held the laptop out of your reach.
"You had autosave on, darling; it's all there still," he said calmly.
You were so mad, you could punch him. "Give. It. Back."
"Only after you go with me on a walk."
"Argh!" you screamed, standing from your chair and pacing angrily. "I don't have time for this, Baldwin!"
He was so damn calm, and it did nothing to stop the anger flowing in your veins. But deep down, you knew you weren't angry at him; it was this damned paper you were trying to write.
"You have 20 minutes to go for a walk with me," he replied before adding, "trust me; the fresh air will do you some good."
You threw your arms in the air, rolling your eyes. "Fine! I'll go for a stupid walk with you. Let me go get a jacket since it's cold as balls outside."
~~~~~~~~~~
Baldwin's gloved hand was in yours, arms swinging gently as you walked through the park. At first, you held onto your anger like an extra coat, letting it protect you from the reality outside.
But as you walked with him, you slowly became less angry. You took in a few deep breaths, letting the crisp, fresh air punch your lungs almost painfully.
You took in the yellow and orange leaves still littering the ground; they'd be covered in snow soon enough. A bright cardinal landed in a bare tree and chirped happily. Families walked around, happy to be together and home for the holidays.
And finally, you smiled, happy to have Baldwin in your life, holding your hand and being so patient with you and your budding writing career.
Your main job was only a way to pay the bills, but it wasn't where your passions lay. Your real dream was to be a writer; you just didn't have the time nor the energy to devote yourself to it.
And Baldwin understood that. It's what first drew you to him; he was a breath of fresh air in your monotonous life. At first, it was just a one night stand. But that first taste of him made you starving, and only he could sate your hunger.
Likewise, it seemed he couldn't stay away from you, either. You went from a one night stand to fuck buddies to eventually dating. Now? You lived together, though he worked almost all hours of the day and you were busy, too.
This holiday vacation, while time for you to hit some upcoming deadlines, was supposed to be a chance to spend time with Baldwin again. Though he was still working through the holidays, most of his work could be done via email, so he was at least home.
"You're thinking awfully loud," Baldwin said, breaking you from your thoughts. "What's going on in that head of yours?"
You smiled shyly up at him. "I'm just thinking about how I haven't been present with you during this little holiday. And that I'm sorry for that; I've been putting writing ahead of you."
"Writing is your passion, darling, I know that." You opened your mouth to argue, but he continued, "I'm not upset that you're using your time to write. But I get upset when you are, especially when you're just running yourself into a wall and I can't help."
"This walk helped," you tried, squeezing his hand.
He squeezed you back. "It's the only way I know how to help you. Sometimes, it's a good thing to take a break, help your brain relax. But you need to let me do that."
You nodded. "You're right. I'm sorry I snapped at you."
Baldwin stopped you with a gentle tug of his hand. He turned you to face him before leaning in to kiss you. His lips and nose were cold against yours, but you didn't care; something about Baldwin's sweet kisses made your brain short circuit.
When he finally pulled away from you, you had a dopey smile on your face.
"Apology accepted. Now, let's get you home and warm. You can bounce ideas off me," he said, pulling you back the way you'd come, back towards home.
1. Of all the dead characters who would you see resurected (lets pretend its possible) and why
2. Who would win in a fight, Cora or Apollo 🤣
I want Hugh! Don't get me wrong, Em would be nice to have back, and Philippe, but I want to see Hugh. See the dynamic between him and Fernando, and Gallowglass, his little family. I want to see his relationship with his siblings, especially Matthew and Baldwin, and I want to see him be an amazing uncle! I can see him and Miyako being close. And I want him to take over from Baldwin, so my baby can have a fucking break 😅
2. As much as I love Apollo, he's a hippogriff, while I think he could do some damage, Cora is a firedrake and could probably toast him (please don't, darling). I also think their powers/strength is linked to their witch's powers/strength. So since Diana is more powerful than her toddler, I'm going with Cora winning in a fight 😅
Becca: Dad, I'm really worried about Uncle Baldwin. I think he's taking this latest break up worse than usual.
Matthew: Uncle Baldwin's tough, I'm sure he'll be fine.
Becca: ..he's replaced everything in his living room with Ikea furniture
Matthew: ...I'll call Grandma
-no becauase he doesn't decorate anywhere he lives
-because why would he? He travels all the time
-he usually stays in a lot of hotels when working save a few cities, like in his house near Hamburg
-and then she left. Walked out the door. Didnt turn around. Baldwin wasnt welcome anymore
-AND HE DIDNT EVEN DO ANYTHING WRONG TO THIS ONE
-and then he saw a photo of a navy and gold living room and decided he must have it. He went on a buying binge. He had everything. He even got a ficus named fern.
-and to top it all off, the book case was now filled with the most toe curling gooey romance novels (EVEN TWILIGHT), family photos adorning the walls with the decorative text "live laugh love" around the frames. It was clearly a cry for help.
-Ysabeau almost near fainted when she saw it. The colour scheme. The warmth. The love. It was like someone had popped Baldwin in the microwave and he had finally defrosted after 2000 years
-and then she does something no one else had done so far. She didnt say how much better it looked. She didnt comment or laugh at the choice of books. She didnt aww and coo over the photos of the twins on the wall. She didnt make any suggestions on improvements. It was the killer comment that got straight to him.
"Changing your apartment wont get rid of the mental images of Rima here"
-and he broke
-because she was right. No matter how much he tried to wipe her away nothing would change the imprint she had left on him, and his homes.
-Even Mr Puddleduck (the ginger tom they had rescued together, named by the twins) was not aroused from his melancholy with the change. He still meowed at the now empty kitchen that she used to cook (and feed him naughty treats) in.
-the sun had been stolen from him, and he couldnt die his hair red like all the women in the gossip collums did because he was already a red head, he did the next best thing he thought of. He changed his apartment.
-but it hadnt worked. He was dying slowly on the inside and now he was sobbing infront of Ysabeau for the 2nd time in his life.
How completely awful.
Part Fourty-Six
Summary:  Baldwin Montclair had a string of ex girlfriends, a single child, and a  lifetime longer than most people could dream of to make all kinds of  mistakes. His family knew one which kept coming out of the woodwork to  irritate him every other century
Also on AO3
The house had been a whirlwind of activity since Martin had first brought Yvette home. Estienne had spent of his time cooing over the baby and worrying about the list of things that she would need. Josselin had rolled her eyes and gone down into the town, muttering something about over-emotional men.
Sister Rosaline hadn't been able to abandon her duties to join the household as Yvette's wet nurse, but she'd passed on the details of a second woman, Loyse, who had accepted the position. She was off somewhere now, setting up her things and sorting out the belongings of her own son, Jaquob.
Martin smiled. The boy had been hovering over Yvette all day, even letting her sleep on his lap while he held her hand.
Her first friend.
Yvette was awake now, eyes roving over her room. It was, temporarily, in the guest quarters while extensions to his tower were completed. There was a wooden cradle in the middle of the room - oak, covered in tangled vines and small birds - and a basket in the corner for dirty swaddling, but for the moment the room was bare of decoration.
'Do not worry,' Martin said softly, 'We shall have some tapestries cleaned and brought up for you.'
Yvette looked up at him, eyes rolling up immediately to stare at the ceiling then over at the window. Martin brought her over and held her up to the glass.
________________________________________________________________
'For the baby,' Miriam smiled, passing Martin a small wooden box.
Martin had given Yvette a proper Gaul baptism during their ride home. Now he had to pay for a Roman Catholic service to make everything legal and above board.
Matthew leaned over Martin's shoulder as he unboxed a silver spoon. The spoon was carefully engraved with YB, the letters entwined by tiny curlicues. 'That is beautiful!'
Martin leaned in and hugged Miriam. 'Thank you.'
'Of course! Anything for my favourite god-daughter.'
The guests parted behind her as Baldwin stepped through.
'Speaking of favourite god-daughters' Miriam murmured.
Yvette was gazing, enraptured, up at Baldwin as he carried her around. They had taken to each other immediately; Baldwin scooped her up and called her pignora, and Yvette shrieked with laughter for the first time ever and buried a tiny hand in his hair.
She was still playing with it now, winding copper strands through her fingers and watching the light play across them. Baldwin had a pinched expression on his face; as they drew closer Martin could smell why.
'All yours' Yvette cried out as Baldwin passed her to Martin, her big blue eyes filling with tears. Baldwin looked as though he'd been stabbed.
'Let us get you changed and Uncle Baldwin can carry you again' Martin kissed Yvette on the forehead as she started to sob, and went off to look for Loyse.
****
'What has happened?' Baldwin asked, as Matthew and Miriam blurted out 'Are you alright?'
'I asked Loyse to show me how to dress Yvette in case I ever need to in future.' Martin passed Yvette to Baldwin; he looked pale and green at the throat.
'And?' asked Baldwin, pointedly ignoring Miriam's unsublte shakes of the head.
Martin shuddered and turned even paler.
****
Later that evening, after the celebratory feast had died down and the guests had gone to bed, and Yvette had finally been peeled off Baldwin and put to sleep in the new nursery, Martin lay on his bed and stared at the ceiling.
Seeing his best friend holding his daughter, it was like - rītije - Martin swallowed the lump in his throat.
A future so tantalisingly close he could picture it as easily as breathing lay just in front of him on the other side of impossible and it was killing him.
Before, when it was just the two of them, - and isn't that a knife twist into his guts- he could pretend that it was fine, that meaningless hugs and stolen glances were enough to close the chasm in his chest.
Now though...
Now...
Now.
'He loves her too..' Martin rolled over, clenching fists into his pillow as he started to sob.
Author's Notes
From my research into medieval childrearing, it appears that nappies weren't used during the period. Instead, the child's swaddling acted as a kind of onesie plus, both clothing and diaper.
"...The most idiomatic and Roman of endearments is pignus. A pignus is whatever one gives as bond or security for a debt, or to assure appearance in court, good conduct, etc. By extension, a person who is a pignus can serve as a “collateral” or “hostage”—for example, in diplomacy between two states. When applied to children, as it sometimes is in epitaphs, in poetry and other emotive contexts, pignora casts them as “sureties” or “pledges” of the love of the parents, assuring the reality of their marriage. But in such contexts it has no legalistic flavor. Often the best translation is simply “dear ones” rather than something more literal, like “little guarantees.”" - Dickinson College Commentaries
Silver spoons: "In many religions, the christening of a baby is an extremely important occasion and one marked with a good deal of ceremony and hope for the future. It’s the moment shortly after birth where a child is named before their God and welcomed into the church as a newborn.
Many faiths have their own form of christening and celebration, but all these occasions tend to involve buying a gift for the new child. In many cases, this is a silver artefact or nicknack such as a spoon, box or bookmark.
There is a rich history for gifting silver christening spoons and it stretches back to Medieval times, perhaps even before then. The original reason for this was not because silver was a valuable metal but because it could help ward off evil and protect the child. The spoon later became a way to wish a child health and prosperity for the future and was highly symbolic.
As silver became a more valuable commodity, its gifting was more generally seen as a matter of prestige. It said something about your status in life and who you were. This is where the phrase ‘born with a silver spoon in their mouth’ came from, with all its negative connotations.
Today, giving a silver christening spoon remains part of the tradition and is usually given by a close family member such as a godfather or mother, brother or sister. The spoon can vary in design from the very ornate to a simple motif but it is normally engraved with the initials of the recipient child." - Edinburgh Silver
rītije/o - copulate (I'm using this as a stand-in for 'fuck' because the Proto-Celtic word list, which sadly is no longer available online, didn't have 'fuck' on the list).
What would happen if their mate died/was killed:
Not including Ysabeau, Miriam and Fernando as they’ve already lost their mate ❤️ but I’m including ocs for Baldwin, Gallowglass and Hancock 🥰
Tumblr media
Matthew: He would let the world burn to find whoever killed Diana. And he’d make it hurt, getting his revenge. There’s nowhere her killer can hide. Even if the death was accidental. Matthew wouldn’t care, all he’d care about would be to find and end the person, his blood rage taking over his entire mind, fogging any sort of consciousness or better judgement. And at the end he might want to join her.
Diana: If Matthew was killed, you’d better pray you can fight Diana. Seeing what she did to Benjamin, she wouldn’t spare you, whether or not she’ll make it hurt depends though. You might get lucky and she’ll just kill you, like with Benjamin—or she’ll drag it out.
Baldwin: There’s no place on heaven or earth in which you’ll be saved. This man is skilled in killing, and in strategizing said killing. He will kill first and grieve second.
Nora (oc): If you wonder how Philippe suffered, you should stay away from Baldwin as long as Nora is in his life. Should he die, you’d wish your own end would come swiftly. She will make it hurt, but wouldn’t kill you, just break you, bit by bit, until there’s nothing left.
Delphie (oc): She will call on Zeus, Hades and any God or Goddess who would listen, begging for Baldwin to be returned. When that doesn’t work, she’ll want revenge. And it will be painful for the ones at fault. At the end they would want it to just be over with.
Minerva (oc): She’s lost a husband before. But loosing Baldwin might be what actually kills her. She wouldn’t be able to go through the loss again. Whether it was back in their own time, or during present times, she would follow him into death without a second thought.
Gallowglass: This man might be a big teddy bear, but should you cross him, you’d better be good at hiding. And if you kill his mate — Oh BOI! This man never really gets mad, but he will quickly let his anger take control, and kill you in an instant, no hesitation.
Lyra (Julie’s oc): She wouldn’t be able to process it, the grief hitting her harder than either of her parent’s death (might have to do with her parents death being self-inflicted, even if they were accidental). If Gallowglass gets killed, she would never recover, bringing the grief with her to the grave. No flowers will ever grow again from her magic, depending on her strength, she might even stop practicing magic all together.
Catriona (oc): She would be inconsolable, turning to her dad and Fernando for support and guidance, unsure what to do, wishing she could get him back. She’ll hit the depressed part of grief pretty fast, and has to get help doing the most basic things.
Marcus: Our token healer would switch to a cold blooded killer should his mate get killed. He definitely protects those he loves, to the very end. Don’t cross him. He knows ways to kill and make it look like an accident, a suicide or in some cases, the body will never be found, just a note stating said person had run away to be with someone.
Phoebe: If it’s human!Phoebe, she’d bargain, trying to sacrifice herself so he could live. If it’s vampire!Phoebe, specifically newly turned Phoebe, you should be careful, she’ll drain you before you can stop to think.
Hancock: Like Gallowglass, Davy is a gentle giant, but cross him and it would be the last thing you do. If you kill his mate he’ll let you bleed, feeding, stopping, feeding again, to drag it out until you die from blood loss.
Annie (kinda oc): She’ll go through all five stages of grief. Not sure what to do to change the outcome. She wants justice, sure, but doesn’t think it’s right to sink to the killer’s level by killing them. Someone else would probably do the killing in her honor.
Valeria (oc): She’s not nicknamed the Bloody Mary of Barbados for no reason. Wrong her and you’ll be dead within hours, and that’s a promise. You think her maker was bad, Val learnt from the worst, watching the ways Louisa made others suffer. She’ll make it painful, and dragged out.
Patience (kinda oc): Patience definitely does not live up to her name. If you cross her she will not be patience with you. She’ll have your head and/or blood before you have a second to think. She might not have blood rage, but she does have some underlying anger issues that would have come both from her father’s years of abuse while they was human, and from watching her family suffer after Matthew and Juliette killed most of her nieces and nephews. Kill her mate, and you’ll be 6ft below in no time.
Ransome: This man might look calm, and scarily so. He’s already lost so much from his grandfather and Juliette paying New Orleans a visit. So should you take out his mate/life partner, you better write your will and get your affairs in order, because judgement day is close.
Jaqueline (kinda oc): She’s a kind, soft spirit. That being said, she’s got a unique gift only a limited amount of vampires have, that and a very close friendship to some of the strongest witches and vampires in New Orleans. Jackie might not be the one to kill the ones who killed her mate, but if you cross her, you’d wish she was the one delivering the blow.
Benoit (Julie’s oc): Ben is very much his father’s son. Born, raised and reborn a soldier, he’s a skilled fighter and killer. Should you have the misfortune of killing his mate, you might find yourself in an old, abandoned castle real fast, with some medieval torture methods waiting for you. Like Baldwin, Benoit will kill you first and then grieve second, heck, even join her in death if he can.
Amelia (Julie’s oc): Amelia has a heart of gold, she would never hurt anyone. She’d go through the five stages of grief, but instead of acceptance, she’d join her mate in the afterlife, knowing without him there’s no sense in going on with life. He’s her whole world, and as she can’t avenge his death, she’ll join him instead. That being said though, if she looses her mate you better run—Miyako is not as forgiving as her sister-in-law.
Verin: It’s inevitable that he will die. Ernst isn’t exactly getting younger. But should his death be unexpected, or rushed…if Ernst is robbed of his end, Verin will tear the person who did it into pieces.
Ernst: He thinks the world of his never aging wife. Should she meet the end, especially in his old age, he wouldn’t be far behind in joining her. The grief would be too hard on his heart, after all he’s loved her for years.
Pierre: His heart would simply break, shattering into a milion pieces. In simple terms, his life would be over, he’d leave Sept Tours, and the de Clermont family, unsure of what to do with himself. Pierre loves with his entire being. He thinks the world of his mate, and without her, to him life has no more meaning. He wouldn’t get revenge though, that would be all Gallowglass and Jack’s doing. His «sons» would do it for him knowing he wouldn’t hurt anyone (unless for feeding) because it’s not what his wife would’ve wanted.
Hyacinth: Being a somewhat «public» figure, Hyacinth know’s she can’t kill his killer, not that she would’ve know how to. She would lock herself away, grieving until she had no more tears to spill, and then she would just lay there, wasting away until she can be with her love again. Like with Pierre, someone else would get revenge for her, but would make sure it wouldn’t come back to hurt her or her family’s reputation. It would either be Jack and Gallowglass or Matthew, heck even Francoise, the older woman adores Hyacinth.
How to be Sexy
A/N: Howdy! I wrote this Baldwin x reader fic mostly for @witches-unruly-heart, but I hope you all enjoy!
Tags: none
Words: 601
Tumblr media
Finally! Baldwin was coming home today, and you couldn’t be more excited. He had been gone for almost a month, doing “family business,” whatever that was. But you had missed him dearly, especially at night. It was so lonely laying in bed with no one to cuddle with you. Sure, he hardly slept, but it was nice to at least know he was there, and he made you feel so protected.
He also was fantastic in bed. Centuries of experience helps with that. But what it doesn’t help with is your insecurities.
Which is why you are at a high-end lingerie store. It isn’t a place you would ever have gone to before you had started dating Baldwin. But the man had expensive tastes, and you wanted to surprise him. The question now, though, was how do you turn on a vampire?
You end up buying a very pricey, dark blue set, one with straps that the customer service rep guaranteed would “have your boyfriend ripping them off you.” By the time you get back home, you have approximately twenty minutes before Baldwin would be home.
Wasting no time, you rip the tags off and start pulling on the bottoms. But the straps that had looked like obvious leg holes wedges uncomfortably in the crease between your pussy and your thigh.
You are positive that that’s not where the strap was on the mannequin, so you pull your leg out and try a different hole. But that is even more awkward and uncomfortable. After a few more attempts, you pull up the store’s website on your phone, trying to look at the smiling model on screen and figure this damned piece of clothing out.
*************
“Darling? Are you here?” Baldwin’s voice rings out in the house.
You try to stifle a frustrated sob, but with his vampiric hearing, he comes straight to you. “Don’t—” you start. But the door swings open, and there he stands.
His eyes flick over your form before landing on your face. You could only imagine what is going through his head; you had gotten the bra on, but there were straps everywhere, and your left arm was somehow cinched to your side. You look away in shame that he caught you like this; this man was the epitome of class and style, and here you are, an embarrassment.
Baldwin comes over to you and cups your cheek, tilting you to look at him. “What’s going on?”
You swallow your pride before answering, “I was…trying to be…sexy for you.”
He smiles softly. “Need help getting out of this?”
“No, no—I got it. I just…please leave.”
He looks at you for a moment before kissing your forehead and going out into the front room.
Having been thoroughly embarrassed, you start working to get out of this ridiculous contraption.
************
You come out of the room a little later, dressed in sweats and one of Baldwin’s jumpers. You tied your hair back out of your face and sit heavily on the couch with a “humph.”
“Now this,” he says, reaching out to grab you and pull you to his chest, “is fucking sexy.”
You huff and swat at his chest. “I’m not sexy. I’m a gremlin.”
But he chuckles at that. “Seeing you in my clothes,” he grips your chin, forcing you to look at him, “I love it. Besides—it’s you I find sexy, not whatever you’re wearing.”
“You—really think so?” you ask with big eyes.
And he doesn’t answer with words, instead kissing you slow and deep, making you feel how attracted he is to you.
