I love ADOW, season three being my favorite because I really enjoyed how they handled Matthew's and Diana's relationship, specifically adding more moments that weren't weighed down by the plot of them being together even when the world was trying to pull them apart. But I am forever thankful for season three giving me that scene of pregnant Diana eating snacks beside Matthew while he was just laid across the bed, resting his chin on his arms. Like it was so cute.

Deborah Harkness, author of A Discovery of Witches, was inspired to write the series after seeing the popularity of paranormal romance novels and wondering why these creatures still captivate us.

 The de Clermont vampire family in A Discovery of Witches is more complex and intriguing than the Cullen family in Twilight, offering a fresh and intimate perspective on vampire dynamics.

 Ysabeau and Philippe, initially distrustful of their vampire son Matthew's witch partner Diana, eventually gain respect and even affection for her, showcasing the power of love and acceptance within the family.

On the surface, it might seem as though A Discovery of Witches draws heavily from the human-vampire romances that preceded it. That assessment's only half-true. Deborah Harkness, author of the New York Times bestselling All Souls trilogy upon which A Discovery of Witches is based, didn't read any vampire literature before penning her novels. But her creativity was sparked in 2008 after seeing the sheer wealth of paranormal romances adorning bookshelves. "It seemed to me much bigger than what had happened with Anne Rice," Harkness explained to The Los Angeles Times in 2011. In the paranormal romance world, certain story beats naturally tread similar ground. Harkness, a decorated historian, scholar, and university professor, weaves the forbidden love story of historian witch Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont (Matthew GoodE) together with magic, philosophy, metaphor, and detailed historical accuracy. That convergence makes for a fascinatingly fresh perspective on the genre while never losing sight of its romantic heart. With that said, there's a specific unintentional similarity A Discovery of Witches shares with Twilight — that awkward feeling when your in-laws are vampires. The Cullens of Twilight might welcome you into the fold with a baseball game, but A Discovery of Witches has the better vampire family by a home run mile. Sorry, not sorry.

Last year, I listened to the audiobooks for the All Souls Trilogy (please do not mistake my dedication to finishing the series as endorsement. These books are terrible. And they had such potential. But. No, I do not suggest them.), which I’m sure some of you know were made into a TV series named after the first book, A Discovery of Witches. Today, I was actually wanting to watch like Twilight or The Hunger Games but I cannot figure out who has the streaming rights right now (my Roku says Peacock, but Peacock denies it), so I’ve settled on ADoW. And I cannot express how shocking it was to see Alex Kingston’s name attached to this project (like, that is shocking by itself. Alex, bb, international treasure, what are you doing?), and then find out that, even though half of this story takes place in England, Alex is playing one of the American characters. Absolutely bonkers. I’ve never heard this woman do an American accent and her voice sounds so different. She’s killing it per usual. But, seriously, it was so jarring when she first spoke.

Gallowglass loved another witch; not Diana.

New to this verse. Have not read the books but I love the show and of course, I love Gallowglass and wanted him to have a happier story then simply pining after Diana all the time. I'm rewatching A Discovery of Witches despite the fact that precisely because it is silly and self-indulgent and delightfully unapologetic about being a show about forbidden romance™ and vampires and witches in good knitwear.

Anyway. It strikes me that I may have subconsciously craved a rewatch because it is also a very powerful -- and, again, absolutely shameless -- fantasy about overcoming the anxieties, pressures, and not infrequent indignities and insults that come with being a female academic. To wit:

You will get a job

Moreover, you will get a good job

Despite your imposter syndrome, you are good at what you do

Your research topic is special and important

That powerful older man who's awful to you at a cocktail party? he's just an asshole

Your intellectual passions will not make you ineligible for or incapable of having a satisfying romantic relationship

Oh, and your manuscripts love you back <3

Season three of ADOW was my favorite by far, mainly because of how it handled Matthew's character, but it still left me wanting answers for so many things, or at least see them addressed more (and it's understandable because I believe the show was canceled, so it ended at the third season). One being Marcus's and Matthew's relationship. Like, for the most part, you can tell things were rather tense between the pair even with their care for one another, that something had happened between them that left a stain. And when you find out that Matthew killed a lot of Marcus's children (it's been a minute since I watched the show so correct me if I'm wrong) because of blood rage, you understand why.

And, throughout the season, I kind of expected more from Marcus in regards to him being more upset to downright enraged at times towards Matthew, especially when the latter wasn't necessarily kind towards him at certain times (e.g. when Phoebe was trying to introduce herself and her relationship with Marcus, or the whole New Orleans ordeal). But there was so much left out when it came to Marcus's feelings that left me wanting more. Like it would have been so interesting to see them put more emphasis on Matthew's and Marcus's relationship as father and son (like how they do with Jack and Matthew), to Matthew who, with his complex feelings and relationship with Phillipe, sees it mirrored in a similar way between him and Marcus. Or to see Marcus carry a form of jealousy towards his brothers and sister because they'll get to see a version of Matthew that he never truly got until most of the damage had been done. The fact that the show hardly displays Marcus feeling some type of way about Matthew going out of his way to help Jack control his blood rage when, years back, he killed people who Marcus was close to and saw as a family for the same reason made me seethe (and the show lets you know how impactful what Matthew did was in many ways, verbally through Ransom's interactions with him and Jack). I needed more regarding Marcus!
