So, I'm planning to illustrate my sister's fantasy WIP, and I was wondering if you had any tips on illustrating? If not, that's cool, no pressure 😅

If it’ll be printed, then don’t forget to include a bleed, for sure. Also, make sure you’re working in the final trim size+bleed. Trust me, it is a pain to have to go back and extend artwork

You may already be familiar with bleed, trim size, etc. and, if so, just ignore the below images, but I definitely caused myself a lot of headaches because I forgot about bleed 😂

For the actual drawings, I recommend doing some experiments/test images to find a method/style that is streamlined and/or repeatable. My book illustrations use a lot of techniques that I don’t use in most of my other art because I knew I wanted something that I could do over and over again relatively easily. And I don’t normally do finished work in black and white 😅

She'd have drifted with him, if he'd asked. Terrifying as it would have been, she would have faced it, would have let him into every last corner of her mind. If he'd asked, she thinks, the war might be over by now.

"She can do it," he says, not sentimental but matter-of-fact, looking out of the great glass windows at the Jaeger below. Most would not hear the faint edge of fear in his voice, but she's not most. "Been training for it her whole life."

"And the boy?" After all, he's right. He's been training Skye for this from the moment he rescued her, however much he hesitated to admit it. But Josh? He's a reckless hothead with no regard for authority, and he's never set foot in a Jaeger before. She's skeptical, to say the least, but Skye would drift with no other (and if there's a bubble of familiarity at that, a flash of memory that threatens to suffocate her, she swallows in down in a moment, ever his faithful soldier). And now the fate of the world is in the hands of two kids.

"She'll get him through it, Wash. Now, are we ready?"

"Ready."

And the drift begins.

2. Best sequel you have read in 2023 so far Hmm, the best sequels I've read so far have been rereads from series, I think! But I have read a handful of installments in the Miss Silver series by Patricia Wentworth this year and The Chinese Shawl particularly stood out to me.

7. Favorite new author (either new-to-you or debut) I think this has to go to Tricia Mingerink; I've only read one book by her, but I appreciated a number of things she did in it, and I immediately tried to figure out how to get my hands on the rest of the series (the library is very slowly working towards getting it!).

8. Favorite new character I'm going to say Renna from Dare by Tricia Mingerink; I liked a number of characters from the book, but Renna in chapter two was largely responsible for hooking me on the book.

12. A book you need to read by the end of the year So many! Leaving aside the four books left on my planned 2023 book list, I currently have Aunts Aren't Gentlemen by P.G. Wodehouse out from the library, so I'll need to read that before the end of the year for sure!

Shynael and Vesper for the OC bingo ask game?

YES! Thank you for letting me gush about these two <3

Both of these characters come from my dragon rider story, The Ambassadors. In this story, the dragon riders are ambassadors between the human kingdom and the dragon kingdom, which are on the very cusp of war as tensions have risen between them.

Shynael (pronounced shuh-NIE-ell):

Shynael is a black dragon who is bonded to the main character, Shard. We get to see him from the moment he hatches from his egg and watch him grow :3 He's just a kid, really, though soon enough he's bigger than a house! He likes cuddles, playing games, and he loves to talk about anything and everything - especially about his mother, whom he never met but who talked to him while he was in his egg (a thing that dragons do, because it can take years before the right conditions are met for the egg to hatch).

Shynael is my precious baby <3 I got the name from a dream - literally, I woke up with no memory of what the dream was about, just that name with that spelling and pronunciation branded into my brain, and I saved it until I came across the perfect character for it. As soon as I sat down to write him, it was like he plopped right into my lap, fully formed and talking a mile a minute. While I was writing the first draft of the story, I would often hear him making running commentary on whatever I was doing, especially if it had anything to do with dragons, of course.

(Also, I just want to say that he was most definitely created specifically for a relationship: being a little brother to Shard, scales and wings and all.)

Vesper:

Vesper is another one of the Ambassadors, bonded to the green dragon Vannasai. Her real name is Vanessa (the thing about the Ambassadors is that their names change when they become bonded to a dragon; it's sort of like the "human language" equivalent of their dragon's name), but I think Shard is the only one (besides Vannasai) she tells it to. She's timid, shy, and soft-spoken, and has been beaten down by various circumstances in her life, but underneath it all has a spine of steel. She's vital to the plot because she ends up saving Shard's life a couple times, so...without her, there would be no story!

Originally, I created her to be Shard's love interest, so I crafted her to complement him and be someone he could really bond with - and she was to be a contrast to the other female human Ambassador, whom Shard was instantly going to develop a crush on but would turn out to not be for him. Since then, I've actually taken out all of the romance (a side effect of the dragon-rider bond is that none of them have any interest in that anymore), but Vesper is still in a perfect position to be Shard's best friend. They draw out each other's strengths in the best way ^_^

The Iliad, at the moment. And an assortment of Doctor Who fanfiction that changes by the day.

Yep!

13: what books make you happy?

That's a hard question! Books are often absorbing; they can make me care or grieve or sigh in relief, but I'm not sure how often they make me simply happy. But The Lord of the Rings is probably a safe bet.

20: can you read in other languages?

A little bit in German, but I'd need a dictionary if I wanted to read anything more complicated than a primer.

30: favourite book this year?

Hmm...let's go with the Republic Commando series, at least the first three or four books thereof. (Yes, that's more than one, but you cannot POSSIBLY expect me to choose only one favourite book. It's just not psychologically feasible.)
